Kimi Raikonnen Once Retired From The Monaco GP & Walked Straight To His Yacht
Kimi Raikonnen – the Iceman himself – has long been known as both the most enigmatic and straight-shooting character in Formula 1.
From telling his race engineer mid-race “ Leave me alone, I know what I’m doing ” to justifying why he missed a speech by Pele with “ I was having a shit “, it’s pretty clear the Flying Finn does and says just about whatever he wants. Which is why the footage of Kimi Raikonnen retiring at the 2006 Monaco Grand Prix is the furthest thing from surprising.
What a legend.

In his time in F1, Kimi Raikkonen has amassed a fortune driving for teams such as McLaren, Ferrari, Lotus, and Alfa Romeo. He has made several splurges from his net worth of $250 million, but the most attractive one yet has to be his yacht.
Kimi Raikkonen’s yacht – Price and features
The Finnish driver bought a 33-meter Sunseeker Predator 108 in late 2008. Raikkonen’s ‘new toy,’ reportedly cost him $10 million, can be seen in the harbors of Monaco and Adriatic coastlines.

How Kimi Raikkonen earned his boat the name ‘one more toy’ in 2006
Before he bought a second yacht in 2008, he was involved in a famous incident with his first one at the 2006 Monaco GP. Raikkonen was having a fairly average season; his McLaren was accustomed to mechanical issues and reliability the entire season.
But then, at the 2006 Monaco GP, the Finnish driver made a blinding start and passed his rivals to move to P2. Unfortunately, he was hit by mechanical issues once again.
Kimi had had enough of this, so he parked his car at the Saint Devout corner and started walking through the tunnel. Everyone assumed that the driver was going back to his garage. But Raikkonen surprised everyone when he went straight to his yacht.
He joined his friends on the boat and partied his worries away. ” There is Kimi Raikkonen. He has not even got back to his paddock. He has got his shirt off, he’s on his boat which has a splendid name ‘one more toy’. Kimi’s with some of his best mates from Finland who have consumed their own weight in champagne and beer,” said the commentator.
It was reported at the time that he paid about 3.5m euros for a new 22-meter yacht.

9 historic moments from the Monaco F1 Grand Prix
The Monaco F1 Grand Prix is the most prestigious race in the world. For all the glitz and glamour that takes place away from the track, winning on the streets of Monte Carlo is a highlight in and driver’s career.
The atmosphere at Monaco is unique, but the tight street circuit of the principality is divisive among fans. The narrow track makes it a challenging race to overtake, and to many, no overtaking translates to a bad race.
But that’s just not true. The overtaking difficulty at Monaco simply makes qualifying position vital, and thus the most important Saturday session on the calendar. But should a driver struggle on a Saturday, their race on Sunday becomes infinitely more challenging and dramatic.
To disprove the theory that Monaco is a “boring race”, here are 9 moments that make Monaco a “must-see” historic Grand Prix.
Ascari in the harbour – 1955
When you push cars to the limit besides the harbour every year, sooner or later, someone’s going to get wet. That happened to Alberto Ascari during the 1955 Monaco Grand Prix . After starting on the front row of the grid, the Italian pushed his Lancia D50 too far.
Leading the race, Ascari didn’t anticipate the chicane after the tunnel, and flew into the Monegasque waters. Ascari swam to safety, and his machine was fished out of the sea. But tragically, just four days later, Ascari lost his life in an accident at Monza, where the final chicane is now named in his honour.
Graham Hill’s fifth win – 1969
Graham Hill is one of motorsport’s greats. The only driver to win the triple crown – the Indy 500, Le Mans and Monaco Grand Prix – he also held another Monaco record.
When he crossed the line after 80 laps of the 1969 race, Hill took his record fifth win at the circuit. It was a record that would stand for almost a quarter of a century, until a certain Ayrton Senna took his sixth Monaco victory in 1993.
“The race no one wanted to win” – 1982
The final three laps of the 1982 Monaco Grand Prix were incredible. For the most prestigious race of the world’s most competitive sport, no one seemed to want to win the thing.
The rain came down and, on the 74 th lap of the 76 scheduled, caught race leader Prost out who crashed his Renault. It gifted the lead to Ricardo Patrese, in pole position for his first Grand Prix win.
Until his he slid his Brabham at the hairpin on the next lap, with Pironi coming through to take the lead. It would have been his third ever Grand Prix victory. Would have been, but his Ferrari ran out of fuel in the tunnel.
Victory surely, then, for Andrea de Cesaris behind? If only he hadn’t run out of fuel behind Pironi, too.
The Irishman Derek Daly was now in prime position to win for Williams, but fate wasn’t on his – or seemingly anyone’s – side on this fateful day in Monaco. He’d crashed. This was a race no one wanted to win.
Incredibly, Patrese, whose spin looked sure to have ruined his race, came through to take the win. Pironi and de Cesaris were classified second and third in a hectic race.
Mansell v Senna defensive masterclass – 1992
Voted as the fan’s favourite Monaco Grand Prix, Mansell and Senna’s battle around Monte Carlo was a memorable one.
Mansell dominated the race, leading from the front for the entire race. Cool, calm and collected, the Brit looked set to secure victory.
During the later laps, Mansell thought he had a puncture, so pitted for a new set of boots. But with the car a little worse for wear, the stop was a long one, allowing the Brazilian through and gifting him a seven-second lead.
Mansell left no time in cutting the deficit and was effectively pushing Senna’s McLaren around the circuit in no time. Mansell pushed with everything he had to get around his rival, but Senna had a reputation for being unfeasibly difficult to pass.
Senna would be undeterred by Mansell’s efforts to force a mistake, and won with a defensive masterclass. This equalled Graham Hill’s Monaco record, which he would break the next year.
For Mansell, he left Monte Carlo a broken man. Faultless for a whole weekend, victory was snatched away in the final three tours of the circuit.
It proved that while we love to see overtakes in motorsport, sometimes the best offence is a good defence.
Only three cars finish – 1996
An epic wet-dry race of attrition was one of the most dramatic Grand Prix of the decade.
As the laps charged on, drivers dropped out like flies. One by one (or three at a time in the case of Hakkinen, Irvine and Salo on lap 71), 19 drivers crashed, spun or retired from the race.
By the final laps, only three cars stood firm. Olivier Panis took his only Formula 1 win, leading David Coulthard and Johnny Herbert.
“Monaco is boring.” Yeah, about that…
Coulthard’s win engineered in England – 2002
The crowds at Monaco for David Coulthard’s win in 2002 witnessed history in the making, not that they know it was happening.
On lap 78, a puff of smoke escaped the Scot’s Mercedes engine, and the McLaren driver’s chance of winning looked in danger. However, visionary technical developments came into play, and his race was saved, albeit from hundreds of miles away.
As engines became more sophisticated in the modern era, more data was available to the teams. Within seconds, the issue was identified and communicated to the driver.
Better yet, they were able to activate an oil system which has filled up possibly due to a piece of debris, and the engine returned to mechanical working order.
Michael Schumacher parks up – 2006
Michael Schumacher was never too far away from a controversial moment during his career.
The German world champion knew how important the qualifying session on Saturday was for victory in the race. He was at the top of the timing sheets as he set off on one final lap to improve his time.
Behind him was the Renault of Fernando Alonso, who was chipping into Schumacher’s time and looked likely to take pole.
As Schumacher approached La Rascasse, the course’s penultimate corners, he appeared to have an issue with his car, and parked up in the notoriously tight section of the track.
That impeded Alonso, who effectively aborted his lap, and Schumacher would take pole.
But it wasn’t to be. At 11pm on Saturday night, the FIA stewards announced Schumacher deliberately impeded the Spaniard by parking his car, and would start the race plum last on Sunday.
Talk about a hefty parking fine.
Raikkonen’s mid-race yacht party – 2006
The glitz and glamour of Monaco attract the rich and famous from across the world to the Monaco Grand Prix. Whether it’s the fashion shows, after race parties, or the buzz of walking the grid, the who’s who of music, film and sport make it to Monaco.
And it’s not uncommon to see them watching the race from a private yacht in the harbour – a view anyone can actually watch the race from.
For some, they got a little closer than they’d anticipated in 2006. McLaren’s Kimi Raikkonen’s engine ran into a problem halfway through the lap, as smoke poured from his engine.
The flying Finn parked up, and began the 2km walk back to the pits along the harbour.
But Kimi being Kimi, and his race being over, the driver decided to take in the race atmosphere while he could. He jumped aboard his yacht, shirt off, drink in hand, kicking back with his mates. And who could blame him?
Ricciardo’s pit stop nightmare – 2016
The drama doesn’t always unfold on the track, as Daniel Ricciardo found out in 2016.
The Aussie was streaking ahead to victory as he pulled into the Red Bull pit box for a change of tyres.
But what’s the most important thing to prepare for a tyre change? The tyres.
It seemed an eternity that Ricciardo’s car sat with no wheels as the mechanics scrambled to fit his wheels. Inevitably, Lewis Hamilton steamed past the pits and Ricciardo joined just behind.
A sure race win thrown away in what could have been a pivotal moment in Ricciardo’s career. But he came back stronger, and in 2018, he took redemption and the win around the principality.

Kimi Raikkonen’s infamous Monaco hot tub McLaren up for auction
A different kind of debrief for Kimi Raikkonen.
The McLaren car that Kimi Raikkonen left in Monte Carlo to go and chill on his yacht has been put up for auction.
Raikkonen was a man known for his actions more than his words and one his most infamous moments came during the 2006 Monaco Grand Prix.
Having retired, Raikkonen decided to not head back to the team garage but instead the nearby marina and onto his private yacht.
A different kind of debrief for Kimi Raikkonen
Post-race time for drivers is often full of media interviews and debriefs with the team but during that Monaco race, Raikkonen’s consisted of beers and a hot tub.
The Finn’s heat shield caught fire during the race and burnt its way through the car wiring, resulting in power being lost to the engine. Raikkonen decided to pull over at the exit of Portier turn and hopped aboard his own yacht, being filmed later by the TV broadcast drinking beers in his hot tub as the race was going on.
That very chassis is now available to purchase with it being put for auction at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix later this year by auction house Bonhams.
The Monaco Grand Prix was not the only time Raikkonen drove this particular chassis and he actually scored a podium with it during the season opener in Bahrain.
In the following race in Malaysia he retired during the opening lap before securing P2 and the fastest lap in Australia.
In total, chassis ‘02’ of the MP4/21 was used in eight races with Raikkonen finishing that year fifth in the Drivers’ standings ahead of team-mate Juan Pablo Montoya. It was also the last season Raikkonen drove for Mclaren with the Finn leaving for Ferrari in 2007 where he won the Drivers’ title.

Raikkonen’s car is expected to fetch somewhere between $2.5-3.5 million which would put it within the top 10 of the most expensive F1 cars ever sold.
The McLaren is not the only F1 car going under the hammer that day with Mario Andretti’s title-winning 1978 John Player Special Lotus-Cosworth Type 79 also set to be auctioned off.
Given it is a championship-winning car, Andretti’s is expected to fetch a higher price within the region of $6.5-9.5 million which would put it in the top three of most expensive F1 cars to be sold.

F1's most experienced driver in the sport's history is retiring at the end of the season.
Alfa Romeo's Kimi Räikkönen announced Wednesday via Instagram that he was stepping away from the sport he has competed in since 2001.
"This is it. This will be my last season in Formula 1. This is a decision I made last winter. It was not an easy decision but after this season it is time for new things.
A post shared by Kimi Räikkönen (@kimimatiasraikkonen)
"Even though the season is still on, I want to thank my family, all my teams, everyone involved in my racing career and especially all of you great fans that have been rooting for me all this time.
"Formula 1 might come to an end for me but there is a lot more in life that I want to experience and enjoy. See you around after all of this! Sincerely Kimi," he said.
The Finnish driver was known for his quiet nature and his willingness to do what he wanted, when he wanted.

One particular moment that defined the character trait came in 2006 at the Monaco Grand Prix.
Driving for McLaren, his heat shield caught fire and he was forced to retire from the race. Instead of returning to his team's garage in the pits, Räikkönen headed for his private yacht which was docked nearby.

As his rivals continued to race, the TV feed cut to Räikkönen sitting in the boat's hot tub with his shirt off and drinking a beer.
Räikkönen is also the last Ferrari driver to win the world championship having beaten Lewis Hamilton by a single point in the driver's standings in 2007.

Räikkönen’s 2006 McLaren going to auction

The McLaren chassis that ultimately led to the iconic pictures of Kimi Räikkönen retiring to his yacht partway through the 2006 Monaco GP is going to auction in Abu Dhabi courtesy of Bonhams on 25 November.
The car in question is the 2006 McLaren MP4/21, chassis ’02,’ which Räikkönen drove from the season opener in Bahrain until that season’s French Grand Prix at Magny-Cours in July.
One race before the chassis’ final outing, Räikkönen gave F1 broadcasters a classic ‘Iceman’ moment in Monaco.
Long before the Finnish driver was dropping blunt remarks on Netflix’s Drive to Survive and even before the famous ice lolly incident in the 2009 Malaysian GP, Räikkönen caught the media’s attention upon his MP4/21 retiring mid-race in Monaco.

Räikkönen decided against reconnecting with his team in the garage, instead opting to watch the rest of the race from his yacht in Monaco’s harbour.
Thanks to Kimi’s antics, the MP4/21 has been etched into F1 history and is expected to fetch a hefty price tag in the region of $2.5 – $3.5 million when Bonhams puts it up for auction in the On The Grid sale at Abu Dhabi in November.
Despite the car being immortalised by the Monaco DNF, the MP4/21 failed to meet McLaren’s lofty expectations in 2006.
The team had just come off the back of being pipped to the title by Fernando Alonso and Renault in 2005, despite winning 10 Grands Prix, so McLaren, Räikkönen, and teammate Juan Pablo Montoya likely hoped for another title bid in 2006.
However, the MP4/21 failed to deliver the performance necessary to mount a title challenge and the Woking-based team fell behind Renault and a resurgent Ferrari in the pecking order, finishing the year third in the constructors’ standings, with zero wins.
To make matters worse, Montoya left the team partway through the season when team boss Ron Dennis caught wind that the Colombian was prepping to race in NASCAR for 2007.
Despite failing to win a Grand Prix in 2006, Kimi still guided the MP4/21 to six podiums and three pole positions, with chassis ’02’ achieving two of those six podiums.
It would be the final year of Räikkönen’s partnership with McLaren, before departing for Ferrari in 2007 and picking up his one and only drivers’ title.
The MP4/21 is also memorable for being McLaren’s first car of the V8 era, with 2006 introducing the 2.4 litre V8 ruleset.
McLaren’s Mercedes powertrain put out approximately 750 horsepower at 19,000 RPM.
This slice of chrome-liveried F1 history will also share the limelight with another classic F1 machine courtesy of Bonhams in Abu Dhabi later this year in the form of Mario Andretti’s 1978 title-winning Lotus 79.
The John Player Special liveried, ground effect marvel is expected to sell for a considerable amount with an estimated price tag in the region of $6.5 – $9.5 million.
