SAPHIRA Hinckley SW50 1976

Specification.

SAPHIRA is a beautiful example of the classic Hinckley Sou’wester 50.  Designed by Henry R. Hinckley, the SW50 takes inspiration from the Bill Tripp designed iconic Bermuda 40. Twenty-five were built over a decade between 1976 and 1986.  Intended for anything from weekend cruising to world voyaging, the SW50 was designed with several different interiors and a yawl rig and a well thought out deck layout making her easily and safely sailed shorthanded.  Her centerboard allows exploring shallow areas like the Bahamas or Chesapeake while still providing performance sailing offshore.

Description

Vintage Port is a classic, yet upgraded and customized, 1982 50' Hinckley Sou'wester in nice condition. She was converted by Hinckley from a Yawl to a Sloop, so she is unique and easy to short handle. Her present owner has cruised from the Bahamas to Rhode Island and back, yet uses her like a daysailer often around his local waters, because she is so easy to handle, due to her electric sail handling and electric centerboard. She offers a Perkins 120 HP auxiliary, Northern Lights generator, watermaker and a 3 stateroom 2 head layout.

Sellers' other boat has arrived, so they need to make room at the dock. All reasonable offers will be considered.

"...the pure grace and simple beauty of the Hinckley design and the impeccable quality of the craftsmanship that goes into each and every hand-built Hinckley yacht. While there are many great boats plying the waters of the world, none have the soul of a Hinckley, drawn from the incredible spirit and pride of the American craftsmen in Trenton, Maine, who have been bringing Hinckley yachts to life since 1928." ~ Robert Iger : Vanity Fair May 2014

Cygnus is a remarkable Hinckley Sou'wester 50. Found and purchased after spending 16 years in heated storage, this yacht has seen very light use over the years. The current owner has been fastidious about her upkeep and maintenance and it shows. This is a classic yacht, from a world renown yard in well above average shape. This is an opportunity to own a luxury yacht, built and maintained to exacting expectation, at a great price.

Hinckley Sou’Wester 50 Yawl, SPIRIT

Hinckley, Hinckley Sou'Wester 50 Yawl Year Built 1979 / US$199,000

Hinckley Sou'Wester 50 Yawl 1 Main

Broker's Comments

SPIRIT is hull number 15 of the impressive Sou’wester 50 Yawl series. Much upgrading has been done over the years, including hull and deck paint, engine replaced, electronics replaced, and she is very well equipped. The current owner has based the boat in Narragansett bay, and just uses the boat for light cruising, in Rhode Island waters. During the winter, she is hauled and has a canvas deck cover.

There are twin furling headsails, although the staysail furler is currently off the boat and at the owners house. The mainsail is electric in mast furling for easy handling, and the mizzen is on a manual in mast furler. There are 4 electric winches.

Below decks, the boat is crafted in Oak, and has 3 double cabins forward of the saloon. There is a head and stall shower shared by the 2 larger cabins, and a second head aft, to starboard. The Saloon is slightly raised with the engine underneath, and is light and airy. To port is L shaped settee, and chart table area, and to starboard is the galley.

Access to the generator is by opening the hinged stairs. The boat has 2 zone air conditioning for those hot summer days. With her centerboard, she is able to cruise shallow areas, and in the past has done several long offshore passages, including to the Med, so is very well proven.

Offered to co-brokers on a commission split of 50/50.

Learn More About Hinckley And Find Your Next Boat

The Hinckley Company built its first boat in 1928 and that was the beginning of an unbroken line of vessels that would come to earn the admiration of many sailors and yachtsmen around the world. For the Hinckley Company pursing this course of boat building, each new boat that was built in their yard reached more and more of a nautical design. Today, their sailboats and motored boats always reflect on the question: “How can we make it stronger, faster and safer?” In the era when all boats were made with wooden hulls, even then were the Hinckley Company standing apart from the rest. They stood apart from the rest with the gracefulness that they had when in the water thanks to the downeast boat design. Everyone was able to pick out a Hinckley from other sailing and motor boats and those few who weren’t, were still able to appreciate the graceful shape and beautiful detailed work. During the 1950’s, Hinckley was the first to take on traditional oak frames and planking in favor of fiberglass. Hinckley saw in fiberglass, what the traditionalists had missed, and an opportunity to save weight and add strength at the same time. The hulls for Hinckley Yachts are designed by Michael Peters, a top naval architect. These hulls are constructed with an inner layer of carbon laid bow to stern with a companion outer layer of Kevlar for bulletproof puncture resistance. There is an iconic Hinckley look and no other yacht looks like a Hinckley. The Hinckley Company has achieved targets that give the boat responsive handling, confident acceleration, stability and comfort. Keep an eye out on the water, you should know when you are spotting a Hinckley Yacht.

Hinckley Yachts for Sale

Hinckley sailboats for sale.

Hinckley was founded in 1928 when Henry Hinckley began building small boats in Southwest Harbor, Maine. While Hinckley had built many powerboats over the years, the demand for sailboats wasso strong that the company focused on this market exclusively until the early 1990s. In 1993 Hinckley broadened its product line with the introduction of the trend-setting Hinckley 36 Picnic Boat, a Downeast-style day boat with waterjet propulsion. An innovative company, Hinckley introduced its own joystick control system years before the large engine manufacturers. Surviving company layoffs and production cut-backs caused by the Great Recession, Hinckley employment reached an all-time high in 2016. Hinckley recently launched its 1,000th jetboat—a company milestone.

Hinckley Yachts

The Hinckley Company is a builder of sailboats and luxury motor yachts. Rooted in Maine’s maritime heritage, Hinckley’s core values are innovation, service, and performance. Hinckley motorboats made advancements in the yachting industry with the launch of the Picnic Boat in 1994.

In 1928, Benjamin B. Hinckley established Hinckley Yachts in Southwest Harbor, Maine. Henry Hinckley, Benjamin’s son, took over the company in 1932. By 1980, Henry’s son, Bob Hinckley, was running the company along with his business partner, Sheap McKenney.

During the 1940s, Hinckley built close to 500 motor vessels for the United States government to use in World War II. In the late 1980s, Hinckley made a drastic shift from sail to power, launching the Talaria 39, an iconic Downeast-style motorboat. On the mission for a lighter vessel with a smooth ride, Hinckley was the first American yacht builder to convert from fiberglass to Kevlar in 1991.

Certified Pre-Owned

Our yachts are built just for you and cared for entirely by us.  Hinckley owners know there is no better way to care for your yacht than by enrolling in YachtCare.  Having built the boats at our facility in Maine, nobody knows these boats better than we do.

hinckley 50 sailboat for sale

The Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) program recognizes Hinckley yachts regularly enrolled in YachtCare.  Certified Pre-Owned Hinckley yachts are impeccably maintained and tend to command a premium in the resale market.  This helps Hinckley owners protect their investment and resale value.  For buyers interested in brokerage yachts, the Hinckley CPO badge signifies a yacht kept to the highest standards with a warranty from Hinckley for the new owner.

In order for a Hinckley to qualify for CPO status, it must have been regularly serviced in the company’s ten yacht care centers through its YachtCare program.  The boat must be inspected and listed for sale with Hinckley Yacht Brokerage.  There is no program cost to the seller or  buyer of the certified pre-owned boat.

Rescuers were on Monday searching for six people – including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch – who went missing after a luxury yacht was hit by a tornado and sank off the coast of Sicily, killing one of the 22 people on board.

The vessel was hit by the tornado at around 5 a.m. Monday, according to a spokesperson for Italy’s Coast Guard. The yacht was anchored about a half a mile from the port of Porticello on the Mediterranean island.

Four Britons and two Americans are among those missing, the spokesperson said.

A source told CNN that Lynch, the founder of software giant Autonomy, was a passenger on the yacht. The source spoke to CNN on the condition of anonymity, as they were not authorized to speak to the media.

Fifteen people were rescued, including Lynch’s wife Angela Bacares, and one child was airlifted to the children’s hospital in Palermo. Eight people were hospitalized in total, according to the mayor’s office. One body was found on the hull of the yacht, the Coast Guard said.

A small waterspout – one of several types of tornadoes – developed over the area Monday morning, according to a report from the European Severe Weather Database. Other strong storms across Sicily brought torrential rainfall late Sunday, dumping more than 4 inches (100 mm) of rain in less than four hours in Brolo, east of Palermo.

The weather forecast had warned of potential strong winds, with storms across the entire southern region of Italy Sunday, the Coast Guard spokesperson added.

One survivor, Charlotte, 35, described how she battled to hold onto her one-year-old daughter, Sofia, reported Italian news agency ANSA, as a barrage of waves sank the yacht.

“In two seconds I lost the baby in the sea, then I immediately hugged her again amidst the fury of the waves. I held her tightly, close to me, while the sea was stormy,” she told journalists. “Many were screaming.”

The captain is among the survivors, the spokesperson for Italy’s Coast Guard said.

The 56-meter yacht called the “Bayesian,” which flies under a British flag, had mostly British passengers and crew, in addition to two Anglo-French, one Irish and one Sri Lankan, the spokesperson told CNN. The New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade told CNN two of its citizens were involved in the incident, but were not among those still missing. The nationality of the dead person has not been disclosed.

The Italian fire brigade said its divers had reached the yacht’s hull 49 meters (160 feet) below sea level, according to a press statement. The brigade also dispatched helicopters to bolster the search operation.

Emergency services conduct search operations in Porticello Santa Flavia, Italy, on August 19, 2024.

The captain of a nearby boat said he turned on his engine to avoid crashing into the Bayesian, Reuters reported, as fierce gales swept the area.

“This morning we got this strong gust and we had to start the engine to keep the ship in an angled position,” he told reporters on Monday. “After the storm was over, we noticed that the ship behind us was gone.”

The UK’s Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) is deploying a team of four inspectors to Palermo to conduct a preliminary assessment of the yacht, a source familiar with the operations told CNN. The source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, did not say when the team is expected to arrive in Sicily.

British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, pictured on March 18, is among the six passengers missing.

British tycoon among those missing

Lynch, the British entrepreneur missing from the yacht, had been plagued by legal woes since 2011 , when he sold his company to tech firm Hewlett-Packard (HP) for $11 billion.

In June, he was acquitted of fraud by a jury in San Francisco, after prosecutors accused him of trying to inflate Autonomy’s revenue in the latest chapter of the legal saga.

He turned ground-breaking research at Cambridge University into the foundation of Autonomy, which became Britain’s biggest software company and a member of the blue-chip FTSE 100 index.

Emergency services conduct search operations in Porticello Santa Flavia, Italy, on August 19, 2024.

Lynch was lauded by academics and scientists and asked to advise the British government on technology and innovation.

Ownership records held by maritime information service Equasis show that the yacht is owned by the Isle of Man-registered Revtom Limited company. Revtom Limited’s latest annual return from April lists Bacares as its owner.

This is a developing story and will be updated.

CNN’s Catherine Nicholls, Benjamin Brown and Eve Brennan contributed reporting.
