Elan 45 Impression Review – What Makes Her So Unique?

elan 45 sailboat

The Elan 45 Impression has the distinction of being a boat that embodies a classic style with all the trimmings of the modern conveniences of the newest vessels on the water.

This Elan 45 Impression review will highlight the aspects of the Impression that make this vessel unique while keeping its traditional feel.

The Impression left a lasting impression on me, and I wouldn’t hesitate to board this boat yet again.

Table of Contents

Accommodation

The Impression has 4 cabins and 8+2 berths that are designed to take advantage of the simplicity of the vessel while emphasizing the elegance of the below deck of the boat.

I have had friends comment that the boat reminds them of a vessel James Bond may frequent, just on a smaller scale. I’ve always found this comparison close to the mark, if not a bit fanciful.

The cabins can accommodate a tall person, which is a plus, but there is also plenty of space for whatever sized occupant inhabits the cabin. The showers and toilets are situated together in a head in the main cabin and one in the corridor.

The 4 cabin layout is perfect for families, a small group of friends, or just a couple on a getaway. If you are planning to travel in a small group or as a couple, the 4 cabin design is perfect if you have chosen to hire a skipper, as he/she will need a cabin as well.

Always keep in mind that if you plan to hire a skipper, he has to sleep somewhere, so if you are looking at yachts without limited accommodations, you will run into a problem.

The saloon and galley are divided into separate spaces by the clever use of a sink/counter. The dining area doubles as the chart table, and the dinette can be stored if more space is needed for the saloon.

The entire interior is encased in light wood and cream-colored fabric that make the saloon look modern yet breezy and relaxing.

Room-to-room access is fluid, and you won’t find yourself needing to maneuver around the furniture to enter or exit the galley, saloon, or corridor leading to the cabins.

There is ample storage space, including a hanging locker in the cabins to stow items conveniently.

I found the hanging locker a godsend when unpacking and was not sure where to put certain items that I wouldn’t need on a daily basis but still needed with me.

The cockpit on the Impression is one of my favorite cockpit designs. The cockpit is deep, offering better sea spray protection than your average design.

The steering wheels are light and react quickly to commands without you having to fight for control of the vessel.

Further shade and protection are afforded via the retractable bimini. The deck also has plenty of room to spread out if you want to escape the cockpit and enjoy the sunshine.

I sailed in Croatia with a hired skipper, and the experience was excellent. I could sit back and enjoy the boat without having to worry about operating and controlling the boat, but I found myself drawn to the cockpit and learning all that I could about the Impression.

As the wind hits the sails, the strength of the wind and the sails’ ability to harness the wind and propel the entire vessel through the water depends, at least in part, on the positioning of the sails.

As the wind catches the sails, the boat will pick up speed, which is measured in knots. To put it roughly, 10 knots is about equal to 11.5 miles per hour.

However, no amount of explanation can accurately describe what it feels like to sail the Impression, so if you really would like to know, charter this vessel!

Why Sail the Elan 45 Impression

  • Sailing is easy, and the boat performs well out on the water
  • The cockpit is very well protected from water and the sun
  • The design and layout of the boat are simple and straightforward while appearing modern and sleekly elegant
  • A good amount of space to move both above and below the deck
  • Space for a skipper if so desired

In Conclusion

The Elan 45 Impression was a dream to sail aboard around Croatia. Our skipper was friendly, knowledgeable, and eager to share information and tall tales with us.

My experience was largely colored by my rapport with our skipper, but I don’t think it would have been the same aboard a different vessel.

The Impression made all the difference and created the perfect sailing environment for us. You can sail in Croatia without an Impression, but why would you?

love this site very well laid out good graphics and commentary. pros and cons ae the key selling point of this sail boat and you have inspired me to look into this particular boat as I have always wanted to sail. really enjoyed reading this article keep up the great work

Hi Fredric,

I am glad you enjoyed the article .

Yes, the Pros and the Cons are very important and help people to make a better decision.

Thank you very much for the comment .

Have a great day!

What a wonderful looking yacht this is!

I love those boats with this elegant, classic style in combination with modern convenienve.

Looks like the Elan 45 offers some good space inside, even for tall people. And if you hire a skipper he can have his own cabin too, that’s really good.

I always wanted to cruise croatia, maybe this is just the right boat to just DO it with a couple of friends:)

Thanks for sharing!

The Elan boat is a great yacht to sail with friends especially in Croatia!

I am sure you will enjoy:)

Thank you for the comment and I wish you to sail soon

Have a nice day!

Wow, what a great site 🙂 I have always dreamed about my own boat. This site give me a lots of information. But a yacht is expensive, and I have not enough capital to buy one. One day I’ll owned my own boat or yacht, and I’ll come back to your site for information that I should know about.

Great to see that you have destinations to visit. Very impressed of the page, it’s so professional and good layout.

Keep on with this awesomw site 🙂

The boats are not for sell, but for charter. it is much cheaper 🙂

Thank you for the compliment, I am glad you like my website and hope to see you often here.

Have awonderful day!

Ah the yacht looks so magnificent. I hope that I will be able to ride on one someday in the future! I’ve personally never really thought of riding on a yacht, maybe because in my country, the sea isn’t all that nice around, and it’s not so common to do so. Thanks for the interesting post and really nice photos. It really captivates my attention! All the best to you as well!

There is always a first time to everything in life:) So, I hope for you to sail soon!

Thank you for the comment.

Have a wonderful day!

I’ve never been on a yacht. Something I’d like to try someday. Does one need any special kind of license to “pilot” a yacht? The interior images of this yacht look very inviting. I’ve heard of the Bimini islands. What is the meaning of bimini as a component of a yacht? Interesting that you had a skipper telling tall tales. 🙂 That must have certainly added to the adventure. Reading this post and looking at the images creates a yearning for relaxation. Perhaps, someday, I too will be able to walk the decks and enjoy the beautiful cabins of such a nice yacht. Thanks for this pleasant post.

It depends of the country and the regions, but usually you’ll need a skipper license.

This skipper was very kind and made our sailing trip unforgettable! I would have suggest a skipper to anyone who want to enjoy fully their sailing getaway!

Thank you for the comment and wish you to sail soon!

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Elan Impression 45.1 Boat Review

  • By Mark Pillsbury
  • Updated: September 17, 2020

sailboat review

With its swooping deck-saloon cabin profile, plumb stern, and loads of ports and overhead hatches to let light pour into the sleeping cabins and saloon below, there’s a lot to like about the look and feel of Elan Yachts’ new midrange cruising sailboat, the Impression 45.1.

Throw in a full-batten main, overlapping genoa and agile steering, and the 45.1 is an able sailing boat too, as Cruising World ’s Boat of the Year Judges found out during a light-air day right after the US Sailboat Show in Annapolis, Maryland, this past October.

Elan has been building boats in a mountainous region of Slovenia for a half-century, and in recent years, Rob Humphreys has been the designer for the entire range, which includes the sporty E Line, luxury GT models and three Impressions, including 40- and 50-foot sisterships.

in-line galley

The most visible change introduced on the 45.1 compared with its predecessor of the same LOA is the plumb stern, which makes for roomy aft cabins down below; a longer and wider cockpit that provides ample space for guests to relax forward of the twin wheels; and comfortable seating options astern for the skipper when underway. These include teak-covered spaces outboard of either wheel, letting a driver sit and see the telltales on the genoa, as well as teak-topped boxes located aft of each helm so the helmsman can face forward. On the boat we sailed, the starboard box doubled as a propane locker, and the port one housed a grill (a fridge or sink are other options). A large fold-down swim platform, when lowered, also gives the chef space to stand while cooking alfresco.

Forward of the helm pedestals, there are side-by-side, long drop-leaf tables. With the inboard leaves folded down, there is a clear centerline path between them from the transom to the companionway, and the stainless-steel frame on which the panels mount provides two sturdy handrails; raised, they form an expansive dining table that can seat eight. The outboard leaves, meanwhile, can be locked horizontally and lowered to seat level to make two large sun lounges or, as BOTY judge Dan Spurr noted, secure sea berths for an off-watch crew.

In theory, this makes for a quite versatile cockpit, though in practice, once seated at the fore end of either table, I felt a bit trapped in place, and while sailing, the forward end of the tables limits access to winches on the cabin top—an example of how design elements sometimes require compromise.

cockpit

As I mentioned, thanks to numerous ports and hatches, the interior of the 45.1 is quite bright, at least during daylight hours. Both aft doubles offer elbowroom, with hanging lockers and cushioned seats. To port at the foot of the companionway there’s a nav desk with a foldout seat; a head and stall shower are to starboard. A large dining table with U-shaped seating takes up the remainder of the saloon to port. A centerline bench includes storage underneath and has a clever articulating backrest that can turn the seat into a settee for dining, or when reversed and locked, gives the cook a solid place to stand while working at the in-line galley to starboard.

At the aft end of the galley, there are two front-opening fridges with storage above; these abut a propane stove and oven. A sink and generous counterspace sit forward, next to the bulkhead, and are located where motion underway should be the least. A nice touch is a pair of stacked ports in the hull, which give the cook a glimpse of the world outdoors.

Forward of the saloon is the owner’s cabin, with a head locker to port and a stall shower to starboard. A hanging locker, plus drawers under the berth and shelves above it, provides lots of storage. In the four-cabin version of the boat, the head and hanging locker to port are replaced by a small cabin with bunk beds, and the two cabins share a combined head and shower to starboard.

For the 45.1, Elan uses African iroca veneers and solid wood. Joinery-work appeared thorough, though the judges noted that not all end grains were sealed.

Elan hulls are vacuum-infused, with solid glass below the waterline and foam coring above; decks are balsa-cored and hand-laid. The hull and deck are both glued and screwed together, and are laminated on the inside; bulkheads are also tabbed and laminated in place, a feature that was noted and approved of by BOTY judge Ralph Naranjo.

Judge Ed Sherman, meanwhile, was impressed by the digital switching used for the electrical system. It was developed by Elan in conjunction with Slovenian electrical company Simarine. All circuits are controlled by a touchscreen at the nav desk, and there are manual backup switches for redundancy.

Base price for the 45.1 is $325,000, and includes the standard cast-iron keel (6-foot-2-inch draft) and a 50 hp Volvo and saildrive. A shoal keel (5-foot-3-inch draft) is also available. The boat we sailed in Annapolis was loaded with options, including air conditioning, an 8 kW Fisher-Panda genset, a 75 hp Volvo with saildrive, a bow thruster, a full suite of instruments and canvas, and three of the four Harken winches were electric. The price tag for that baby was $467,000. Expect to pay right around $425,000 for a nicely equipped model.

Nav desk

Underway, I felt secure moving around on deck thanks to beefy teak toe rails, numerous handholds on the cabin top and an excellent handle on either side of the dodger frame. Forward, the chain locker is deep, and a stainless-steel bow fitting protects the gelcoat when lowering and raising the anchor.

Unfortunately, our sail aboard the 45.1 was the first of the day and the breeze was light. Still, in about 7 knots of wind, we were able to get the boat moving along at just over 4 knots closehauled, and gained another knot or so when the wind “gusted” to 8.5. Even in these light airs, the single rudder was responsive, and the boat hinted that it would be nimble given a little more oomph in the sails.

Overall, I liked the 45.1. It seemed a good size for a couple with kids or frequent sailing friends, and it would be easy to manage shorthanded. With plenty of storage below and an option to carry up to 150 gallons of water (56 gallons of fuel), the boat could be set up for longer passages—but it would also do just fine as a roomy, comfortable daysailer. Overall, I guess you could say the new 45.1 left a good impression.

A conservative sail plan and a hull shape that does not punish casual sailors in extreme weather. A low centre of gravity and great stability due to CFD modelling by Humphreys Yacht Design. Option of a closed and covered cockpit that protects the crew from the elements. An easy and convenient emergency ladder trigger mechanism. A stiff hull that saves lives.

DECK SALOON

The raised coachroof forms a deck-saloon yacht which offers a far brighter and more spacious interior than an ordinary yacht, thus creating a true home away from home while on board.

This Elan yacht has been designed with every comfort in mind. Leisure when cruising is guaranteed. Relaxation and enjoyment are a priority – everything from the large volume, sunbathing areas in the cockpit, an outdoor grill and fridge, to microwave and coffee machine options.

EASY TO SAIL

This yacht is easily handled by a shorthanded or even single-handed crew, due to the winch placement and furling sails. Paired with a more conservative sail plan, this ensures an easily managed rig.

BLUE WATER CRUISING

Be one of many people to travel long distances on an Elan yacht. Cross oceans, or even circum-navigate the globe; forget about the everyday issues of the mundane life and set sail on your biggest adventure ever. Reliability, ease of sail, stiffness of the hull, comfort and capacity for a myriad of blue water equipment (like a water-maker and a generator) enable the yacht to became your perfect blue water cruiser.

Created by a team of world-class GRP technicians, craftsmen and engineers, Elan Yachts are a level above the quality of other production yachts. Durable and reliable – the true benefits of a more than 70-year-old tradition in yacht-making.

A GREAT INVESTMENT

Elan Yachts are one of the most popular yachts to serve as investments in the charter market. Low maintenance cost, exceptional durability, reliable aftersales support and easy upkeep – all of these elements ensure the Elan yachts have great value retention and profitability.

L-SHAPED KEEL

The classic L-shaped keel has many benefits ensuring easier navigation. It's a user-friendly keel with advantages when clearing kelp, easier manoeuvring in marinas and a smaller draught.

elan 45 sailboat

Inspired by the solutions presented on the Elan GT5, the Elan Impression 45.1 now has a longer and wider cockpit, defined by twin wheels, a split cockpit table, and a foldable sunbed. Boasting a modern vertical transom, two large cockpit storage boxes were added, which can also be equipped with a grill, sink, or fridge. Customers can now opt for a sportier look with an open transom configuration or choose the safety and comfort of a closed transom option with a large swim platform. One of the additional changes immediately apparent is the addition of a new window, illuminating the back cabins and building upon her immediately recognizable shape.

elan 45 sailboat

The Impression 45.1 is bright and airy, thanks to its hull shape and recognisable deck saloon windows. The saloon features a large settee fully surrounding the table without obstrucitng the pathway. The Galley has been shifted forward, for more spacious living and larger navigation area. After months of testing, iroko veneer framed with solid iroko wood was chosen as the main interior furniture material, because it was determined to have the best endurance capabilities, a beautiful classic look, and an attractive price point. The Elan Impression 45.1 will be available in two cabin layouts, one more aligned with the needs of friends and family, and one for demanding charter groups.

The table can be configured in numerous ways; the open side wings and closed mid-section provide small tables on each side for people to enjoy drinks and snacks, while still enabling easy movement into the yacht’s interior. The full open table offers enough space for lavish meals. The sunbed configuration offers a place to set down drinks, as well as widens the side-bench and converts it into a full-on sunbed.

The new Elan Impression 45 is a thoroughly modern family cruising boat that can be tailored to each owner’s needs  (published Dec/Jan 2016-17)

The afternoon after the Annapolis sailboat show that we had a chance to give the new Elan Impression 45 a sail trial turned out to be very nearly flat calm. I was sailing with Rick Dieterich, owner of Springline Yacht Sales, who is a new Elan dealer, and with us was Matic Kelmenc, Elan’s marketing manager.

elan-45-looking-aft

The 45 is a Rob Humphries design and is a family cruiser with a good turn of speed and handy performance. Humphries is a highly accomplished, British yacht designer. He designs all of the new Oyster Yachts and has created numerous fast racing machines, including an Open 60 for Ellen MacArthur in which she set a non-stop around the world record.

Elan is a Slovenian company that manufactures skis and skiing gear. They have been in business for 60 years and got into the boat building business 40 years ago. Always interested in performance and racing, Elan now builds two lines of yachts, the performance E series and the cruising Impression series.

Humphries likes to say that Oyster and the big projects are the glamourous side of his design business but Elan is where he has the most fun designing boats that are being built by dedicated sailors for dedicated sailors and at prices that many can afford.

slys-elan-e4

The boat has a pleasant sheer with a raised cabin top and large cat’s-eye windows. The topsides have four rectangular windows so each of the three sleeping cabins and the saloon get plenty of natural light. The bow and slightly raked stern are pleasantly balanced and give the boat a traditional appeal. The topsides have a slight step or detail about a foot below the toe rail that visually breaks up the expanse of fiberglass and adds a touch of elegance.

The boat we sailed had a simple sloop rig with an in-mast furling mainsail and a roller-furling, 125 percent genoa. The control lines lead aft to the cockpit and cabin top so you never have to go forward to fly, reef or furl the sails. A single electric winch on the cabin top makes working the sails and halyards a simple chore.

We played the light puffs and the 45 showed that it is no slouch. In the light stuff, we could sail at close to 40 degrees apparent and tack through close to 80 degrees. Upwind we could make our own wind but once we fell off the breeze and the apparent wind decreased, sailing become more problematic. But in the puffs, the sails would fill and we could feel the 45 gather her skirts and start to sail nicely. We whistled for the wind but in the end it never built so we called it a day.

Under power, the boat handles well. The sail drive generated a bit of vibration on the rudder but this is normal, particularly when the boat is fitted with a two-bladed folding prop. At cruising revs of 2,200 rpm, the 55-horsepower Volvo pushed us along at 7 knots in flat water. At maximum revs, the boat will motor at 8.5 knots. A 75-horsepower engine is optional.

The cockpit has twin wheels so you can steer from either the leeward side where the telltales on the genoa are most visible or from the windward side where the 360-degree visibility is better. The helm seats are wide and high enough to make seeing forward possible. Just aft, two small teak seats are built into the pushpit where you can relax and keep an eye on things when the autopilot is doing the steering.

The wheel pods have spaces for multi-function displays and to mount sailing instruments, the autopilot, engine controls and bow thruster controls.

elan-45-bow

The ergonomics of the cockpit are excellent. The table has large folding leaves that will accommodate up to six for a meal. The bench seats are long and wide enough to make good places to lie down or even sleep while on passage. The forward end of the cockpit is raised into a bridge deck so water is unlikely to find its way into the saloon.

The 45 is a very well designed and laid out cruising boat on deck that is easy to handle from the cockpit and capable of making good passages under both sail and power.

LIVING ABOARD

The 45 has four different accommodation plans all of which are built around the saloon, galley and chart table. The galley, to port of the companionway, is slightly U-shaped with the dual sinks nearly on the centerline, the three-burner stove outboard and the large, side-loading fridge under the counter next to the stove. This will be a good seagoing galley and offers plenty of storage and cabinets for supplies, dinner ware and cutlery.

The dinette forward is U-shaped and will seat four for meals. With the large leaf folded out, the bench settee to starboard becomes part of the seating arrangement where two or three can sit.

elan-45-nav-station

On all four layouts, there is large aft head to starboard just aft of the chart table that has a stand alone shower stall. This stall will double as a great wet locker for foul weather gear when you are on passage and sailing in wet weather.

elan-45-forward-berth

BWS THOUGHTS

The 45 is a great size for family cruising, living aboard and voyaging. It has storage spaces for all the gear you need for extended cruising, a place to mount a generator if you need air conditioning, and big lockers on deck.

You can have the boat finished with teak decks if you like or you can go with non-skid fiberglass decks. You can opt for the in-mast mainsail system or go with the simpler and less expensive slab reefing mainsail arrangement.

At least 13 killed, 14 missing after boat sinks off Yemen: UN agency

Eleven men and two women among the dead as search operations continue, International Organization for Migration says.

Yemen boat

At least 13 people have died and 14 others are missing after a boat sank off the coast of Yemen, the United Nations migration agency has said.

“A migrant boat capsized off the coast of Yemen’s Taiz governorate on Tuesday,” the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said in a statement on Sunday.

Boat carrying 45 refugees capsizes off yemen, children among 16 dead after asylum-seeker boat capsizes off djibouti: un, at least 49 dead, 140 missing in migrant boat sinking off yemen.

The boat, which departed from Djibouti carrying 25 Ethiopians and two Yemeni nationals, sank near Dubab district in Bani al-Hakam subdistrict, it added.

Eleven men and two women were among those confirmed dead as a search operation continues to locate the missing, including the Yemeni captain and his assistant, the IOM said.

It noted that the cause of the shipwreck remains unclear.

“This latest tragedy is a stark reminder of the perils faced by migrants on this route,” said Matt Huber, the acting chief of IOM’s mission in Yemen.

“Every life lost in these dangerous waters is one too many, and it is imperative that we do not normalise these devastating losses and instead work collectively to ensure that migrants are protected and supported throughout their journeys.”

🚨 A tragic shipwreck off Yemen has claimed 13 lives, with 14 people still missing. Tuesday’s capsizing follows similar shipwrecks in June and July, the IOM said.

“[It] is yet another devastating reminder of the extreme dangers of this migration route and the reliance on smuggling networks. Vulnerable migrants are often pushed into perilous conditions by smugglers as they attempt to flee desperate circumstances in search of safety and opportunity in the Gulf states,” the UN agency said.

Tens of thousands of refugees and migrants set off yearly from the Horn of Africa, seeking to escape conflict, natural disasters or poor economic prospects and sailing across the Red Sea in a bid to reach the oil-rich Gulf.

The IOM recorded more than 97,200 arrivals in Yemen in 2023, surpassing the previous year’s numbers.

People who do reach Yemen often encounter further threats to their safety, as the Arabian Peninsula’s poorest country has been mired in civil war for nearly a decade.

Many are trying to reach Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries for employment as labourers or domestic workers.
