A jaw-dropping superyacht believed to be worth £45m and rumoured to be owned by an oil baron has arrived in Devon. The impressive vessel named Ngoni - or the Beast as she’s known - is renowned as being one of the most stunning yachts ever launched.

It sailed into Dartmouth Harbour, yesterday, July 12. It has not been confirmed how long the yacht will remain there for but it is certainly causing a lot of interest in the harbour.

It measures a hefty 58 metres in length and was built in 2017 in the Netherlands. According to Yachting World , its mast, built by Rondal, is one of the world’s largest one-piece carbon spars, and its enormous square top mainsail covers almost a quarter of an acre – the equivalent of four tennis courts.

The interior includes a bar and dining, a lavish owners’ suite, guest accommodation, study and a spacious gym. The design spec by Ngoni’s owner was, 'build me a beast. I don’t want a wolf in sheep’s clothing'. The desire was for a fast global cruiser with relatively simple systems that would require minimal downtime for maintenance and be fun and rewarding to sail.

Delighted to see it in Dartmouth Harbour, harbourmaster Paul Britton said: "It is a private vessel so there is not much I can say about it. I can confirm it arrived early yesterday morning and is registered in Jersey.

"The length of its stay will depend on the weather. We have a bit of nasty weather coming through."

Ngoni was created using the combined talents of Royal Huisman and the late Ed Dubois. The name of the yacht, Ngoni, is the name for an ethnic group of people in eastern Africa and their language.

The new owner of the yacht, which was advertised for sale for £45m in 2021, is reported to be British businessman and entrepreneur Tony Buckingham. He was named one of Jersey’s richest men in 2011, with a £500m fortune. He has also been known as the FTSE 250’s most famous former mercenary.

The former North Sea diver, and believed to be a former British special forces officer, started his oil career at Ranger Oil and Premier Oil and later became an advisor to the Angolan Government.

Dartmouth is a civil parish and town in Devon county, England. It is a popular tourist destination situated on the western bank of River Dart's estuary. The river is a long narrow tidal ria (coastal inlet) running inland as far as Totnes. Dartmouth lies within South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and South Hams District. In 2001 it had a population of 5,510 inhabitants, reducing to 5,060 at the 2011 census. Dartmouth area has 2 electoral wards (Townstal and Kingswear) with combined population at the 2011 census of 6,820 people.

• The Royal Regatta in Port of Dartmouth takes place annually over 3 days at the end of August. This spectacular event sees traditional regatta boat races together with fun fairs, community games, markets, air displays including fireworks and the Red Arrows. Royal Navy guard ship is always present at the regatta.
• Bayard's Cove was used in several TV productions, such as The Onedin Line, a BBC TV drama series which ran from 1971 until 1980. Many of the scenes from BBC's series 'Down to Earth' with Ricky Tomlinson, were filmed at different locations around the town.
• Major tourist attractions in Dartmouth include Dartmouth Castle, Dartmouth Royal Naval College and Dartmouth Steam Railway terminating at Kingswear on the opposite river bank.
• Boat sailings to nearby sites along the coast (including Salcombe and Torbay) and up the river (to Dittisham, Totnes and Greenway Estate) are offered by several companies. PS Kingswear Castle is a paddlesteamer that returned to Dartmouth in 2013.

The town is linked to Kingswear by three ferries. The Lower Ferry and Higher Ferry are both vehicular ferries. Passenger Ferry, as the name suggests, transports only passengers, principally to link at Kingswear station with Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway. The nearest bridge across Dart River is in Totnes, some 18 km (11 ml) away by road.

Dartmouth River Cruise (Lower Dart)

A circular cruise from Dartmouth sailing the lower part of the River Dart viewing the castles at the estuary, Britannia Royal Naval College and towards Agatha Christie's Greenway Estate.

Cruises operate daily at 11:15, 12:30, 13:45 and 15:30 IMPORTANT NOTE : KC does not operate on all services. From Late June to September in 2022, this cruise is predominantly on the historic paddle steamer "Kingswear Castle". The Kingswear Castle is the last remaining coal-fired paddle steamer in the UK. She was built in 1924 at Philip & Son of Dartmouth and has been lovingly restored to her former glory, beautifully reflecting the style and craftsmanship of a bygone era. In addition to scheduled services on the river Dart, she offers the most unique cruise and charter experience in the whole of the UK.

A Typical Day's Itinerary

• Cruise from Dartmouth - 55 minute cruise to Dartmouth
• Arrive back in Dartmouth

A £150m super yacht belonging to a Kazakhstani billionaire has brought a touch of glamour to Dartmouth this week – and underlined the harbour as a port of choice.

The newly launched Lady Lara – believed to be the 51st biggest super yacht in the world – was taking shelter from Storm Clodagh.

She is owned by mining tycoon Alexander Mach­kevitch, who is worth an estimated £2bn – although he is not believed to on board the vessel.

Built by Lürssen Yachts in Germany, the 300ft long ship stopped in Dartmouth en-route to the Caribbean as part of her maiden voyage and crew training trip, after leaving Lürssen’s Rendsburg facility on the River Eider and the Kiel Canal.

The yacht was launched in April and embarked on her sea trials in July, arriving in the UK fresh from a trip to the Norwegian capital Oslo and Amster­dam in the Nether­lands.

Dartmouth harbourmaster Captain Rob Giles, who piloted her in, said the super yacht was carrying out some systems operations work while sheltering in Dartmouth from storms that have been battering Britain.

He said Dartmouth had beaten off other ports to the berthing and Dart Harbour Navigation Authority had received some excellent feedback from the captain and crew.

Residents were delighted at the weekend when the vessel turned on her lights in the River Dart as part of the weekend’s Candlelit Dart­mouth celebrations.

The vessel’s very distinctive lines and curves are the work of Reymond Langton Design.

Her exterior shape features grand sweeping curves and elegant proportions that resembles a feminine image, combined with masculine features such as defined lines and sculpted surfaces.

Lady Lara is expected to cross the Atlantic when she leaves Dartmouth, to cruise the winter season between Florida, the Bahamas and the Eastern Caribbean Islands.

The Lady Lara has onboard VIP suites with fold-down balconies, a gym, jacuzzi, a swimming pool and even a helipad.

Weather in St. Pete

Always keep in mind the weather when planning your yacht rental experience. St. Petersburg is an ideal location for a yacht charter, either while on vacation or “staycation” because of the wonderful weather patterns. Located just above the tropical divide, the winters range in the 70°s and summers in the 90°s, so there's no wrong time to visit. While it may rain frequently in St. Pete, the storms are almost always scattered and very short in duration, oftentimes only lasting a few minutes and then the sun is shining again. If you're traveling to St. Pete in the cooler months of the year, be sure to pack some layers to wear while on your yachting trip, especially if you plan to go yachting in the evening. If you're traveling during the summer months, remember to stay hydrated and take some extra precautions when it comes to sun care.
