History of Benetti Yachts

Since 1873 Benetti has stood for Italian shipbuilding excellence producing more than 300 boats and more than 50 superyachts, including a handful of giga-yachts larger than 330 feet (100m). Originally crafting commercial sailing vessels out of wood, Benetti recognized the potential of composite material for yacht production in the 1960s and transitioned to strong steel and aluminum to build full-custom displacement and semi-displacement motor yachts ranging in size from 90 (28m) to more than 330 feet (100m). Azimut Spa acquired Benetti luxury yacht builder in 1985, adding the traditional, experienced builder into the ultra-modern, technologically advanced Azimut Benetti Group.

Benetti is headquartered in Viareggio, Italy, as are its two main shipyards: Darsena Lucca and Darsena Italia. A third yard, located close by, assembles Class Range yachts ranging from 93 to 145 feet (28m to 44m) in length. Benetti’s modernized boatyard in Livorno covers 200,000-square-meters, produces 12 custom mega yachts at a time, offers superyacht repair services and is the timeliest refit center in the Mediterranean. Its 34,000-square-meter Fano facility specializes in molding and laminating yachts.

Benetti new construction yachts adhere to the Benetti Quality System, which comprises specialists who perform more than 1,000 quality inspection checks and tests on every yacht, following the most stringent safety and technical standards. Benetti’s architects, engineers, designers and project managers boast fanatical attention to detail and an obsession with quality to produce iconic Italian luxury yachts, such as the custom VICA FB801.

Benetti has been recognized as world leaders for building Custom Mega Yachts for the past decade having won several awards, including the ShowBoats International award for “First Custom Mega Yacht Builder larger than 80 feet.”

Benetti continues to think ahead with its BEST concept, which integrates all onboard electronics, an integrated bridge system (which reduces the number of necessary navigation panels), a diesel-electric propulsion system and more.

The Benetti Yacht Fleet

Northrop & Johnson offers a wide range of Benetti yachts for sale, including wholly custom superyachts built in steel and aluminum and composite semi-custom full and fast displacement series motor yachts. There are dozens of Benetti yachts for sale and more than 30 boats and superyachts under construction at its facilities, including a few very large vessels.

Aside from the three 350-foot (107m) launches in 2019, notable yacht builds by Benetti include the 295-foot (90m) LIONHEART, the 282-foot (86m) NABILA, the 282-foot (86m) KINGDOM 5KR, and the 230-foot (70m) REVERIE. As of 2019, the Italian shipyard has delivered 46 custom superyachts larger than 165 feet (50m) and has six additional 165-foot-plus (50m-plus) yachts currently in build. Some of the custom superyachts are built in a semi-custom steel and aluminum series that share a common platform, ranging from 164 (50m) up to 240 feet (73m). This allows the Italian builders to offer a semi-custom package based on a common technical platform and thus avoiding expensive delays while still allowing ample opportunities for customization.

Benetti’s composite semi-custom models range from 100-feet – 145-feet (30m – 45m) and include the Delfino 95 (28.95m), the Mediterraneo 116 (35.3m), the Benetti Classic 121 (36.9m), the Fast 125 (38m), the Classic Supreme 132 (40m), the Crystal 140 (42m) and the Veloce 140 (42m).

Propulsion System

Along with being at the forefront of trend-setting yacht design, Benetti is also a pioneer in creating sustainable production processes and models that are as eco-friendly as possible.

Their new hybrid propulsion system, which was conceived exclusively for the FB272 Giga yacht, employs a responsible energy approach as it drastically decreases fuel consumption over the life of the yacht. This particular propulsion package included diesel-electric engines with two Azipods propulsion units powered by a battery pack. The Azipod units are even able to rotate 360-degrees and achieve better fuel efficiency than conventional propulsion systems.

Benetti Yachts

One of Europe’s oldest luxury yacht builders, Benetti’s varied portfolio includes semi-custom and custom luxury yachts and superyachts constructed in FRP, aluminium and steel. As a member of the Azimut|Benetti Group, Benetti is a world leader in terms of the total length and units of yachts over 37 metres it has in its order book at any given time.

History of Benetti

In 1873, Lorenzo Benetti founded the shipyard near the shipbuilding centre of Viareggio, Italy. After Lorenzo’s death in 1927, it passed to his sons, Gino and Emilio, who renamed the shipyard Fratelli Benetti, or Brothers Benetti, and their four sons soon joined the family business.  The primary focus was on building commercial sailing vessels and navy ships until the 1950s when the company split the business between commercial and leisure vessels. The leisure yacht business, led by great-grandson Lorenzo, took off in the 1960s when Fratelli Benetti began to design and construct yachts in steel with wood-panelled luxury interiors called the Delfino model.

The Tirreno and Mediterraneo models followed, the latter lifting Benetti beyond the 30-metre mark. By 1980, Benetti had become the world’s most active builder of yachts of 24 metres or more, receiving worldwide attention for delivering the staggeringly large for its time Nabila (now Kingdom 5KR) to Adnan Khashoggi in 1979 at a steep loss. The ruthless contract for this project eventually forced the yard into bankruptcy in 1984.

The Turin-based fibreglass boatbuilding company Azimut was the successful bidder for the Benetti assets the following year. Azimut’s owner, Paolo Vitelli, provided the historic company with the technical and financial support to expand its operations. Today, Benetti operates two shipyards, located in Viareggio and Livorno, Italy. Originally concentrating on metal boats in the 40 to 50 metre range, Benetti branched out to include several models of composite displacement motor yachts to fill the gap between large Azimuts and small Benettis, as well as develop much larger yachts in steel and aluminium. In 2020, the builder delivered three yachts of more than 100 metres. The Azimut|Benetti Group is the world’s largest superyacht builder by total length of yachts under construction in BOAT International’s Global Order Book and has been since 1999. It remains a family-owned company with Vitelli’s daughter, Giovanna, acting as Group Vice-President

The company’s fleet counts five categories: CLASS, B.YOND, OASIS, B.NOW, CUSTOM. In the CLASS category, there are two composite displacement models: Motopanfilo 37M and Diamond 44M. Motopanfilo 37M draws inspiration from the past and projects it into the future. Powerfully inspired by the nautical tradition of the 60s, with modern technical and stylistic solutions, Motopanfilo 37M has a modern twist where artful use of mirrors expands the perception of interior space and amplifies the sea views. Loro Piana Interiors has fitted out the interiors and part of the exteriors. Diamond 44M is the fibreglass flagship of the Benetti Class category, with a perfect balance between harmonious exterior proportions and outdoor spaces. It boasts a 102 sqm Sun Deck - the largest on the market for this size - and a sophisticated ventilation system, which ensures fresh and clean air throughout the yacht.

B.Yond 37M is a yacht with steel hull and aluminium superstructure that promises reduced environmental impact for improved comfort during navigation with the hybrid propulsion E-Mode system developed by Siemens for the shipyard. Oasis Deck®, developed by Benetti and British firm RWD back in 2019 is based on a mix of five exclusive characteristics: the opening wings that extend the deck close to the water but safe from the waves, a magnificent pool integrated in a flush deck, an unobstructed 270-degree view, a mixture of sun and shade and a social design that weaves the entire deck into a vast convivial OASIS. This new solution is dedicated to all the yacht owners who want to spend quality time on board, in constant contact with the surrounding environment. The new solution is offered by the shipyard on Oasis 34M, Oasis 40M and on the B.Now category. The four models in the B.NOW category, 50M, 58M, 66M and 72 M, are all, in fact, also offered with the Oasis Deck® solution and are once again the joint efforts by the shipyard and RWD. The B.NOW models are suited to people who love the life at sea in a casual and contemporary atmosphere, without sacrificing comfort and privacy. Finally, the CUSTOM category features yachts from 48 to over 100 meters in length, tailor made to the owner’s desires.

The Group has extensive in-house design and styling services and also owns the Lusben yard for repair and refits.

Notable Benetti Yachts

Mention Benetti and the first name that comes to mind is Nabila built for Saudi Arabian billionaire Adnan Kashoggi in 1980. At 85.65 metres, Nabila was the largest superyacht in the world at the time, featuring an exterior design by Jon Bannenburg. The yacht’s fame grew with her role in the James Bond film “Never Say Never Again”, as the Disco Volante . The yacht next belonged to Donald Trump, who named her Trump Princess. Her name since 1991 is Kingdom 5KR and she is owned by Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal of Saudi Arabia.

The first post-Fratelli Benetti was 45-metre Rima (now Ego) designed by Terence Disdale in 1987, followed by Sea Sedan (now Tumberry C) , Shamwari (now Mistress) , Joalmi and Sahab III . Although it would build any custom contract, Benetti updated its own semi-custom line with the award-winning, full-displacement 50-metre Golden Bay series in 1995. This series was optimized for charter and introduced many people to the Italian brand. The last one launched was Jo in 2004.

The seven-deck, 70-metre Freedom (ex- Reverie ) was launched in 2000 and at the time of her build was the largest Benetti by volume at 1,979GT

Serial superyacht owner John Staluppi has built two custom Benettis, the 60.95m Diamonds Are Forever launched in 2011 and the World Superyacht Award winner 69.3m Spectre in 2019. He also owned a 2001 Benetti he named Quantum of Solace (now Elysium) .

In 2015 Sir Philip Green took delivery of his third Benetti, the 90m Lionheart , which was the longest Benetti to date. His wife’s design studio Green & Mingarelli, designed the lavish interior.

The champ among Benetti’s repeat owners is the Chinese owner of a string of Ambrosias, Ambrous Young. The latest one, Ambrosia III , which he refitted in 2017 is a 65m launched in 2006. This yacht is notable for being equipped with the radical for its time Azipod propulsion system.

The year 2020 saw the completion of Benetti’s first yachts that broke the 100-metre barrier: the 107m Luminosity , 107m Lana and 108m IJE .

Founded in 1873, Benetti is one of the oldest luxury shipyards in the world. Benetti builds semi-custom composite yachts from 93′ to 145′ and custom steel and aluminum superyachts starting at 154'. Azimut Yachts acquired Benetti’s management in the early 1980s, forming the Azimut Benetti Group, the world’s largest shipyard in terms of yachts produced.

Lorenzo Benetti founded Benetti Yachts in 1873. Benetti Shipyard is home to one of the oldest yacht-building yards in Europe. After Lorenzo’s passing, his sons Gino and Emilio took over the company and renamed it Fratelli Benetti.

Benetti began building wooden boats used for local and international trade; however, the company shifted direction after World War II, and started producing pleasure crafts made from steel. Benetti builds composite megayachts ranging from 93 to 164 feet and fully-custom steel and aluminum superyachts from 154 to over 180 feet. In the early 1980s, Azimut acquired Benetti’s management, forming the Azimut Benetti Group, the world’s largest shipyard in terms of yachts produced.

CLASSIC 40M BENETTI Motor yacht for sale

A handsome yacht with a first-class pedigree, CLASSIC 40M BENETTI is a 39.5m (129.5ft) tri-deck motor yacht constructed in steel with aluminium superstructure and delivered by the renowned Italian shipyard in 1970. Her long-standing owner has kept a tight maintenance schedule, ensuring that each winter the yacht is refitted and refurbished as needed.

Exterior design details include a graceful sheer line and bow profile, a classic canoe stern, full walkaround sidedecks on two levels and traditional varnished teak capping rails. Covered companionways on the main deck feature Benetti’s signature sculpted mullions.

The sun deck has L-shaped sofa seating and a huge expanse of sunpads with partial shade from a fixed awning and exercise equipment forward either side of the funnel. There is another large sunpad forward on the bridge deck and steps down to cushioned seats overlooking the foredeck.

She has a spacious bridge deck aft with shaded open-air dining beneath the sun deck overhang and a sun lounge with a sofa, armchairs and a coffee table opposite two sun loungers. There’s a sociable seating area aft that serves as a second open-air dining option with a U-shaped banquette, folding armchairs, a large high-gloss varnished table and a folding canvas bimini.

The main deck aft has four large rattan armchairs around a coffee table in ample shade. Inside, her interior decor is traditional, with finely crafted features. The main deck saloon has a large lounge area aft with L-shaped sofas and two armchairs and forward is the formal dining area with an eight-seat table. The sky lounge has a large sofa facing aft, looking through double doors opening onto the upper aft deck.

Welcoming up to eight guests in four cabins with seven crew, CLASSIC 40M BENETTI offers 267GT of internal volume. The guest accommodation is arranged across two decks. The owner’s suite is forward on the main deck, has an office desk and a 10sqm (108sqft) walk-in wardrobe. The en suite has a bathtub as well as a shower. The other guest cabins are on the lower deck, comprising a full-beam VIP double forward and two twin cabins that each have extra pullman berths.

This twin-screw yacht is powered by twin 624hp Caterpillar diesel engines with low engine hours. Her top speed is 13.7kts and she cruises at 11.5kts with a maximum range of 3,600nm.
