Amigo 33 is a 29 ′ 6 ″ / 9 m monohull sailboat designed by Carl Andersson and built by Amigo Yachts between 1981 and 1990.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

• SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
• D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
• LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
• LOA: Length overall in feet
• Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

Review of Amigo 33

Basic specs..

Both the hull and the deck is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

The interior is like many other boats made of mahogany. Mahogany belongs to the hardwood species, known for being water-repellent and resistant to decay. It has an attractive wood grain and holds wood polish and varnish well. The boat is equipped with 4-5 berths, a galley, 65.0 liter fresh water capacity and toilet facility. Note: the boat has also been sold to be self-made/-interiored, which means that the quality of each boat may vary.

The boat equipped with a masthead rig. The advantage of a masthead rig is its simplicity and the fact that a given sail area - compared with a fractional rig - can be carried lower and thus with less heeling moment.

The Amigo 33 has been built with different keel alternatives.

The Amigo 33 is equipped with a long keel. A full keel provide a better directional stability than a similar boat with a fin keel; on the other hand, better directional stability means also that the boat is more difficult to handle in a harbour with less space.

The keel is made of iron. Many people prefer lead keel in favour of iron. The main argument is that lead is much heavier than iron and a lead keel can therefore be made smaller which again result in less wet surface, i.e. less drag. In fact iron is quite heavy, just 30% less heavy than lead, so the advantage of a lead keel is often overstated.

Amigo 33 can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 1.40 - 1.50 meter (4.59 - 4.89 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

This keel is also made of iron.

The boat is typically equipped with an inboard Volvo Penta MD7 diesel engine

The transmission is a shaft drive. A shaft drive will in the long run require less maintenance than other types of drive e.g. a sail drive.

The fuel tank, which is made of stainless steel, has a capacity of 50.0 liters (13 US gallons, 10 imperial gallons).

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Amigo 33 is 1.81, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 6.5 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Amigo 33 is about 134 kg/cm, alternatively 751 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 134 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 751 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

The Ph.D. academy story is very connected to its logo. At first glance, the logo for Ph.D. Academy represents a graduate cap. The reason for this is the focus of Ph.D. Academy, which is to offer Ph.D. candidates a wide range of activities and in this way mingle people from every department of the University of Maastricht. This also brings us to the next two important elements of the logo; the people and the bridge with the ribbon, representing water, flowing beneath. The people are there to represent the social aspect of the organization and they are standing on a bridge, which resembles the iconic Sint Servaasbrug from Maastricht. In short, we organize educative, social, and fun activities for all Ph.D. candidates of Maastricht University. This is a place where bright minds mingle!

Executive phd, programme information.

In year one of the programme, four workshops will be organised, two on-campus workshops in Maastricht, the Netherlands and two online. During these workshops, candidates will interact with faculty and fellow students, present and discuss their research. This will help you to submit your research proposal in year one of the PhD programme. The workshops are scheduled to take place on-campus (3 days each) in May and November and online (1 day each) in September and February.  In the first year of the PhD programme, you will complete your PhD research proposal. Your supervisors (at least two) will also be assigned in year one of the programme. Twelve-fifteen months after admittance into the programme, the supervisory team will evaluate your progress. Upon successful completion of the first year, access to the next years of the PhD programme will be granted. Admission to this second phase depends on the successful assessment of the research proposal written by the candidate. Each following year, we will provide one on-campus workshop (3 days) and three online workshops (1 day each). The on-campus workshops will take place in May and the online workshops in September, November and February. The workshops will be an opportunity to develop your research skills, network with fellow PhD students and faculty, and receive feedback on your work. The on-campus presence also give you the opportunity to meet with your supervisors and evaluate your progress. The general timeline of the MSM Executive PhD programme consists of four years. However, you can take up to 7 years to complete the programme, without extension. In case of exceptional circumstances, a maximum extension of up to 3 years is possible, meaning a maximum total duration of 10 years. Upon graduation, you will receive a doctoral degree by Maastricht University.

We are looking for candidates with a Master’s degree who have strong academic records, professional and/or volunteer experience, affiliation with academic research and a special interest in private sector development. MSM welcomes candidates from all over the world from a wide wide variety of backgrounds, cultures and disciplines. The programme is tailored to synergise the various backgrounds. Participants in the programme have external work responsibilities (full-time, part-time, self-employed, independent consultant), leaving them less time for PhD research. Ideally, the PhD candidate’s employer offers support by allocating time and allowing the candidate to incorporate their studies into their work (by providing data, support, related assignments and the like). The programme is open for participants from emerging economies as well as developed countries.

Research Area: Sustainable Polymer Synthesis

Location: Maastricht University, Brightlands-Chemelot Campus in Geleen (Netherlands)

Eligibility/Qualification: The ideal candidate will hold a master’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related fields with expertise in organic and polymer synthesis. Experience with polycondensation, material characterization, and a strong interest in exploring structure-property relationships of thermosets are advantageous. Fluency in scientific English is required, and knowledge of Dutch is not mandatory.

Job Description: The selected PhD candidate will work within the Sustainable Polymer Synthesis group under the guidance of Associate Professor Katrien Bernaerts to develop biobased monomers and recyclable thermosets. This involves close collaboration with academic and industrial partners within the SusInkCoat consortium, leading to the upscaling of samples for testing by industrial partners. The role also includes staying current on literature in the field, generating research ideas, and fostering interactions with partners.

Pebblepad is a digital portfolio tool to record and monitor learner growth and achievements, reflection and feedback processes, longitudinal assessment, and competency development.

Why are UM programs implementing PebblePad?

This digital portfolio tool supports the UM vision that assessment should be aligned with the UM CCCS principles , is meaningful for the learning process, and is coordinated at program level. PebblePad facilitates longitudinal assessment, with opportunities for remediation, reflection, and feedback. Additionally, our students and staff can record and monitor growth, learning outcomes and competency development.

Although our AMIGO may seem compact, this pocket cruiser offers the seaworthiness, comfort, and features of much larger vessels, but at an affordable price. Not to be confused with the lighter, less able weekender-types of similar length, this is a heavy boat capable of serious long-distance offshore and coastal cruising. Yet AMIGO is a boat that is easy to handle in either the masthead or gaff sloop rig, even by the single hander. Best of all, it's trailerable. A most notable feature aboard AMIGO is the standing headroom throughout the cabin area, a remarkable feat considering the very attractive and well-proportioned appearance. Another clever feature is the fully enclosed toilet room with stall shower formed by a series of hinged panels. These panels fold back when not needed, hiding the head from view while opening up the cabin for spaciousness. The divided cabin offers dual cabin privacy, something seldom seen on a 22' boat. Other features of AMIGO include two hanging lockers, a dinette that converts to form a berth, an aft quarter berth, a 4' long galley, and a huge ice box with loading and access from the cockpit or galley. Storage space is located in every nook and cranny, including a separate locker at the stern for stove fuel with overboard drains for safety. The cockpit is self draining and long enough to sleep in. For range there is a 50 gallon fresh water capacity. Aimed at the amateur who prides himself on quality workmanship and perseverance, building AMIGO will be a rewarding experience that will draw the admiration from on-lookers. Plans are available for either wood-strip or "one-off" fiberglass construction.

These COMPLETE PLANS to build in Strip-Plank WOOD include FULL SIZE PATTERNS for all station, transom, and stem form contours, deck crown and cabin cambers, plus gaff and masthead rig, and inboard or outboard power options. Includes instructions, Table of Offsets, and hull materials listing.
