Search and rescue for missing persons is always challenging for the specialist recovery teams involved, regardless of the environment they’re working in.

But the teams looking for the missing aboard the Bayesian yacht which sank off the coast of Sicily leaving several people dead, have faced particularly challenging conditions. Even though the boat lies in relatively shallow water of 50 metres, underwater operations are affected by numerous factors which make them the most complex of search and rescue efforts.

Best practice shows that searches should be coordinated, with areas that are being searched expanding outwards from the last known location. This makes the most efficent use of available teams and equipment, which are selected depending on targets and environments being searched, while updating and refining the operation as new information becomes available.

Land-based searches may be more straightforward as the recovery team can usually walk or move about more easily. Searching in water is more challenging, whether in rivers, lakes or the open ocean.

Inland waterway searches , such as rivers, canals and lakes are more constrained in their extent than the sea and open ocean due to surface area and depth.

Searchers use a variety of techniques, such as trained victim recovery search dogs, sonar to reflect sound waves from target objects, water penetrating radar that can detect objects below sediment, and remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROVs). The combination of techniques used are dependent on the environment and the scenario.

Marine searches, by contrast, can be more difficult as they usually cover significantly larger areas both spatially and in terms of water depth. Additional issues to consider include salinity, temperature and strong currents, and the fact that there may be a rugged seabed which could hamper divers, sonar and ROVs.

A search and rescue operation for the sunken ferry Sewol's missing passengers in waters off Jindo Island, South Korea.

Drowning was the third leading cause of “unintentional injury” death worldwide, claiming around 360,000 victims in 2021, and revealing a globally increasing trend in cause of death.

And for every drowned person recovered, there are many others who remain missing. Recent Danish research showed that only 45% of missing individuals in water are successfully found and recovered within 12 months of their disappearance.

Marine searches cover a wide range of disasters, from tsunami victims, such as the Boxing Day tsunami in 2004 , to fishermen on sinking trawlers and migrants on unseaworthy boats . Then there are issues related to mechanical difficulties, such as the Argentinian San Juan submarine in 2017 , and plane crashes such as the still-missing Maylasian Airlines MH370 plane in 2013 .

Finally, there are searches for missing divers or underwater craft like the Titan submersible which imploded during a dive to the Atlantic wreck site of the Titanic in 2023.

Diver caution

The search for the missing in the sunken Bayesian yacht – the cause of which is currently uncertain – should have been relatively straightforward. Helicopters, likely equipped with thermal imaging equipment, and rescue boats were rapidly deployed to look for survivors, although the body of chef Recaldo Thomas was found floating on the surface.

Five victims have been recovered from inside the yacht that was discovered close to the shore in comparatively shallow water (50m) and where there was good local knowledge of ocean currents. If they had been washed out to sea, ocean currents, the decomposition process, scavenging activity and other factors could all have made this forensic search even more problematic.

ROV

However, it is challenging for divers to work at depths of 40 metres or more. One reason is the risk of nitrogen narcosis . The deeper divers go, the higher the pressure gets.

At higher pressure, the gases divers breathe in from their tanks cause symptoms such as drowsiness and impaired judgement, which is an obvious danger underwater. Decompression sickness – when divers ascend too rapidly, and often known as “the bends”, is another issue. This means divers can only spend ten minutes on the wreck itself.

In the case of the Bayesian, underwater ROVs were deployed, likely with live audio, lighting rigs and sonar equipment to assist with navigation and location, and minimise the risk to divers in this difficult environment. The 56m yacht was rotated onto its side, had 1.3 cm thick glass windows that were hard to break, and was full of debris that made it difficult to retrieve the missing people.

The chances of finding the missing alive declined rapidly the longer the underwater search went on. However, in rare cases, people have been found clinging onto debris or flotation devices, or within air pockets in sunken vessels after several days.

Harrison Okene, a fisherman on a trawler that sank 19 miles off the Nigerian coast in 30 metres of water in 2013, was found by divers still alive after 60 hours being trapped in an air pocket in the upturned boat. He later published a book on his rare survival story. There are also several famous maritime stories of people rescued from rafts after being adrift at sea for weeks and even months.

While tragically the initial search and rescue operation turned into a recovery mission, the rapid deployment of search teams, including specialist divers, helicopters, rescue boats and ROVs resulted in a rapid “successful” operation.

This is of paramount importance when it comes to identifying the victims and determining the cause of death. Sadly this is not always the case in such rescue operations, such as undocumented migrants lost at sea .

The lack of funding to recover sunken vessels in relatively shallow waters, which would allow the cause of their sinking to be diagnosed, would help prevent future vessel sinkings and the tragic loss of life that all too often goes with it.

Luxury Yacht Planned Maintenance

Superyacht Maintenance

Planned superyacht maintenance is key to vessel reliability and value. Successful yacht upkeep requires a yacht maintenance company with specialist knowledge and experience.

A Yacht Maintenance Plan You Can Trust

A planned superyacht maintenance system increases the safety and reliability of any yacht, significantly reducing the risk of operational performance failure. As a leading yacht maintenance company, we ensure the full team are prepared and drilled on yacht maintenance and safety. Moran Yacht Management, working together with the superyacht crew , sets up planned maintenance procedures in accordance with Manufacturer’s Guidelines, Classification Society, Regulations and Flag State Requirements. We have also extended the concept of planned superyacht maintenance to all departments. Our planned maintenance systems are set up so the owner can monitor its observance aboard, view upcoming yacht maintenance, and manage downtime to suit his or her schedule. Managers are hands on. They make regular visits to ensure that all is well and to liaise with crew for ongoing maintenance and yacht operations .

Flagship Software

As an experienced yacht maintenance company, Moran Yacht & Ship recognizes that software can be a valuable tool in yacht management . We also recognize that this software must be intuitive and easy to use with a minimum of familiarization and training. Our observation is that good software creates an open environment that helps seagoing personnel, shore-side management, and the ownership to record and access all relevant data in real time on a well regulated, well maintained, and safe yacht.

A Guide to Superyacht ETO and AV/IT Careers

yachting operations specialist

Following on from our guides on superyacht   deck,   interior,   engineering and chef  careers , it’s time to get technical and clear up some confusion around the roles of an ETO and an AV/IT officer. To keep us on track with the latest training requirements for both, we spoke to Scott Molloy of SEACertify to get his input for this latest guide courtesy of the careers guidance platform,   Academy by Ephemeris.

What is the difference between the role of electro-technical officer (ETO) and that of superyacht AV/IT officer?

The AV/IT officer role generally encompasses interior automation, entertainment, IT and some satellite systems. Essentially, they oversee the technology systems beyond the remit of a traditional ETO, which is mainly marine electronics.

Before the Manila Amendments to STCW, superyachts interpreted the ETO role to include the ever-growing consumer technologies and IT on board, but it is now more important than ever to distinguish between the two roles.

In practice, an individual can fulfil either or both roles, however AV/IT has nothing to do with the role of the ETO - they are completely different.

What size of vessel would typically have both an ETO and an AV/IT officer?

Generally a superyacht longer than 90 metres almost always has a dedicated AV/IT officer.  Below this length, a vessel is likely to have a crew member in another position assume the AV/IT role.

Whether the vessel has an ETO is less size related, but falls under two general scenarios:

Where the vessel has an ETO dictated on its Safe Manning Document (SMD). A flag state such as Cayman Islands is more inclined to ask for an ETO ticket amongst the crew when the vessel has diesel-electric propulsion, rather than the size of the vessel or the number of guests/passengers on board.

There is no ETO on the SMD, but the vessel/management have otherwise decided there is a crewmember with the job title ETO, as originally stated in the MCA’s MSN 1860 (now revised to MSN 1860 Amendment 1 )

What qualifications do I need to become an ETO?

As for all crew working on board, to be a superyacht ETO you need to have completed your STCW basic safety training (a five day course) and have a valid ENG1 medical certificate.

The ETO’s remit was covered by a new Certificate of Competency (CoC) under regulation iii/6 of the STCW 2010 Manila Amendments. All crew sailing under the job title of ETO should now hold this ticket.

Paragraph 1.5 of The MCA’s MSN 1860 Amendment 1  states that: “If you are employed on a ship as an ETO, you must hold an STCW ETO Certificate of Competency whether or not an ETO is listed on the SMD (safe manning document)”.

How long is the training to become an ETO and what does it involve?

The standard route (without a higher education in Electrical Engineering or an equivalent Electro-Technical subject) is currently three years.  A candidate requires sponsorship through a shipping company in order to complete five phases, split across college phases and sea time. The standard route leads to either a Foundation Degree or HND in Electronics and Marine Electrical Engineering.

All of the academic subjects, short courses and sea time required are offered within the route to enable a candidate to apply for a Notice of Eligibility (NOE). Once they have this, they can then sit the MCA Oral exam and gain their ETO Certificate of Competency (CoC) if successful.

Candidates must currently obtain at least 12 months of combined sea time and workshop skills, and have completed a Merchant Navy Training Board (MNTB) Training Record Book (TRB) while on board ship.

For those candidates with a higher level Electrical Engineering qualification or equivalent, there is now a fast-track cadetship route , which can take 18-20 months. This route is currently only being offered at South Shields Marine School. Candidates require sponsorship or approval from a shipping company to complete required sea and workshop time on this route.

Individual requirements vary depending on prior studies/sea time experience, which can be assessed by the Marine School. If eligible for this route, they can produce an action plan for a candidate to follow in order to obtain the required pre-requisites for their NOE. Once they have their NOE, they can then sit the MCA Oral exam and gain their ETO Certificate of Competency (CoC) if successful in passing the exam.

Ephemeris ETOs 1

How do I progress through the ranks as an ETO?

Only some large superyachts are required to carry an ETO under their flag state’s safe manning requirements for the vessel. Other yachts may still choose to have an ETO to compliment their technical department. But with usually a maximum of one ETO on board some of the large yachts, there isn’t the same career progression on board you would see on larger vessels, such as cruise ships that have junior through to chief ETOs.

On superyachts, ETO career progression more often involves moving onto new positions with more responsibilities and an improved employment package on other vessels. In either case, it is essential to compliment the continuing on-the-job professional development with further short courses such as vendor-specific training or by gaining AV/IT skills also.

For those willing to gain an MCA SETO (Senior Electro-Technical Officer) endorsement in their CoC, this will assist in career progression also.

This can be obtained as follows:

12 months' sea time as an ETO with an ETO CoC

HND/Advanced Diploma, Foundation Degree or Degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering

HELM(M) course completion certificate

High Voltage Management course certificate

Pass a SETO MCA oral exam

For more details on the SETO endorsement also see the MCA’s MSN 1860 Amendment 1.

With requirements in place for ETO certification, what is the current status for AV/IT training and certification?

A working group involving the relevant superyacht industry professional bodies and individuals has been developing a qualification framework for AV/IT training. This will result in crucial, yet non-mandatory, AV/IT training standards for the superyacht sector. The advantages include a new clear career pathway for superyacht AV/IT and also the creation of a new, easily recognised and industry-specific training standard. The most basic level of the qualification framework is close to launch, and once the independent assessment platform is finalised, may be completed within the next few months.

What is the working relationship between the ETO and the AV/IT officer?

On a vessel large enough to have both a dedicated ETO and AV/IT officer, they would both typically work under the chief engineer and be expected to assist each other as required, with some crossover of responsibilities possible. But most vessels are not large enough to have both as dedicated crewmembers, and they become roles. In these cases, the electrical/electronics role of the ETO and the technology role of the AV/IT officer fall to whichever other crew are deemed most suitable.

With thanks to Scott Molloy, Managing Director of  SEACertify  marine electronics training, and Spectral Marine , New Build AV/IT Consultancy.

The final body from the  luxury yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily has been found.

Italian coast guard sources told PEOPLE on Friday, Aug. 23 that the "last person still missing in the Palermo shipwreck is identified."

The discovery comes after four bodies were recovered on Wednesday, Aug, 21, while a fifth body was found in the wreckage.

The  Bayesian , a 183-foot vessel, sank around 5 a.m. local time on Monday, Aug. 19, while moored around a half mile from the coast of Porticello, according to an Italian coast guard statement previously obtained by PEOPLE.

At the time of the disaster the yacht was carrying 22 people. Immediately after it sunk, 15 people were rescued and 1 body was recovered — later identified as chef Recaldo Thomas.

On Thursday, Aug. 22, an Italian government official confirmed that British tech entrepreneur  Mike Lynch was among the dead.

While the Italian authorities have not formally identified the recovered bodies, an Italian interior ministry official confirmed that Lynch was one of the bodies found, reported Reuters . His  daughter Hannah remained missing at the time.

The father-daughter pair had been among six passengers missing in the aftermath of the sinking, while Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, was one of 15 people who were rescued.

Others missing have previously been identified as Chairman of Morgan Stanley International  Jonathan Bloomer, his wife, Judy , and New York City-based lawyer  Christopher Morvillo  and his wife, Neda.

A source close to the investigators dealing with the incident previously told PEOPLE that authorities are focusing on the victims before looking into what happened.

"Obviously the priority is being able to work out what has happened to those that are missing and recover any bodies," the source said. "At the moment,  no one has been placed under investigation  because until they find the bodies, they cannot evaluate any sort of accusation or charge."

Lunch's wife, Angela Bacares, is one of the individuals who was rescued, according to a local source.

The passengers were celebrating after Lynch was acquitted in June in a financial fraud trial in the U.S., a source close to the survivors told PEOPLE.

“That's why he took his closest friends and colleagues on the trip,” the source said.

Morvillo  had represented Lynch  in the fraud case and other firm employees were on the  Bayesian  as well, a spokesperson for Clifford Chance, his law firm, said in a statement.

In story published on July 27 by  The Sunday Times  in a story published on July 27, Lynch said that he felt like he could have have died in prison had he been convicted.

“I have various medical things that would have made it difficult to survive,” Lynch, a father of two children — Hannah, 18, and another daughter, 21 — told the paper.

Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.

Danny Fortson, who interviewed Lynch for the story, previously told PEOPLE that Lynch seemed "incredibly grateful and happy," but was still "struggling to accept" his new reality .

Ahead of his conversation with PEOPLE,  The Sunday Times  correspondent shared a post on  X (formerly known as Twitter)  reacting to the news that Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter were missing.

He wrote, "The terrible irony is that when we sat down last month, he made it clear that he felt he had won a new lease on life.’ ”

Divers find body of last person missing since superyacht sank off Sicily coast

Italian rescue divers have found the body of the last person missing after British tech magnate Mike Lynch's family yacht sank off Sicily, believed to be his daughter Hannah, a source close to the matter told Reuters on Friday.

The British-flagged Bayesian, a 184-feet-long luxury sail boat carrying 22 passengers and crew, was anchored off the port of Porticello, near Palermo, when it capsized and rapidly sank after being struck by a pre-dawn storm on Monday.

The source did not identify the body as belonging to 18-year-old Hannah Lynch, but she was the only person still unaccounted for. Italian news agency Adnkronos said she was found inside the yacht. The woman's body was found on Friday, the Italian Coast Guard told the Associated Press.

The wreck is lying at a depth of 50 meters and once inside the passageways are narrow. The fire brigade on Friday described rescue operations as "long and delicate," and said they involved more than 400 people, including 28 specialist divers.

The bodies of the other five dead passengers, including Lynch, were recovered on Wednesday and Thursday from inside the yacht. Those that died included: Judy and Jonathan Bloomer, a non-executive chair of Morgan Stanley International; and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo, an American citizen, and his wife, Neda Morvillo.

The body of the only crew member who died, onboard chef Recaldo Thomas, was found near the wreck on Monday.

Official identification of the corpses and autopsies are expected to begin after the transfer of the last recovered body to a hospital morgue in Palermo.

"The Lynch family is devastated, in shock and is being comforted and supported by family and friends," Lynch's family said in a statement on Friday.

"Their thoughts are with everyone affected by the tragedy. They would like to sincerely thank the Italian coastguard, emergency services and all those who helped in the rescue."

"Their one request now is that their privacy be respected at this time of unspeakable grief."

Breaking news, in your pocket. Sign up for USA TODAY's Daily Briefing newsletter.

A judicial investigation has been opened into the sinking, which has baffled naval marine experts who say a boat like the Bayesian, built by Italian high-end yacht manufacturer Perini, should have withstood the storm.

The yacht's captain James Cutfield, his eight surviving crew members and passengers have been questioned by police, but have not made public comments. Investigating prosecutors are due to hold a press conference on Saturday.

Complex Salvage Operation

Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, which owns Perini, told Reuters the shipwreck was the result of a string of "indescribable, unreasonable errors" made by the crew, and ruled out any design or construction failings.

Pulling the wreck out of the sea, where it is now lying on its right side, apparently intact, may help investigators determine what happened, but the operation is likely to be complex and costly.

Nick Sloane, a South African engineer who led the operation to salvage the Costa Concordia cruise liner that sank in 2012, said in Italian media interviews on Friday that the operation would cost up to 15 million euros ($16.7 million).

He told daily La Repubblica that salvaging the yacht would take six to eight weeks, including preparation work, and would have to be completed by mid-October, without specifying the reasons for the timing.

Bringing the yacht to the surface will have to be done "very, very slowly", and might take a couple of days, he said.

Sicily yacht sinking LIVE: Family of Mike and Hannah Lynch 'devastated' as final body recovered from Bayesian

LIVE – Updated at 14:32

A body has been found in the search for the final person missing from the wreck of the Bayesian superyacht that sank off the coast of Sicily .

Divers today resumed their search for Hannah Lynch, 18, the daughter of technology tycoon Mike Lynch , who remained ‘unaccounted for’.

The Italian Coastguard told media this morning that they had found a body and it had been brought to shore.

Following the discovery the Lynch family released a statement saying they are “devastated, in shock and being comforted and supported by family and friends”.

"Their thoughts are with everyone affected by the tragedy. They would like to sincerely thank the Italian coastguard, emergency services and all those who helped in the rescue,” the statement continued.

"Their one request now is that their privacy be respected at this time of unspeakable grief."

Mr Lynch, his daughter, Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judy Bloomer, Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo, and his wife Neda Morvillo were lost when the Bayesian sank at around 5am on Monday in a severe storm.

Italian authorities have launched an investigation into how the boat sank as questions continue to mount around how the tragedy occurred.

They are 'investigating shipwreck and multiple counts of culpable manslaughter', Italian media reported on Friday.

For the latest updates see below.

Bloomer family pay tribute.

In a statement confirming their parents' deaths, the Bloomer family described the couple as "incredible people and an inspiration to many".

Mr Zagarola previously said a decision on whether to raise the sunken yacht from the seabed is "not on the agenda", but will be in the future.

The luxury yacht's captain, James Cutfield, has reportedly been questioned by authorities in connection with the sunken vessel.

A helicopter, remotely controlled underwater vehicles, naval units and cave divers were used during the search operation.

Bayesian was moored around half a mile off the coast of Porticello when it sank as the area was hit by a storm.

The wreckage of the superyacht is resting on the seabed off the coast at a depth of 50 metres (164ft).

Prosecutors in the nearby town Termini Imerese are scheduled to hold a press conference on Saturday morning.

Family issue photo with their tribute

The Lynch family also issued a photograph of Mike and Hannah alongside their tribute, PA has reported.

Vincenzo Zagarola, of the Italian Coastguard, said the search for Hannah was not "easy or quick", comparing the sunken yacht to an "18-storey building full of water".

The bodies of all six missing passengers have now been brought to shore in the small fishing village of Porticello, around 11 miles from the Sicilian capital of Palermo.

Of the 22 passengers and crew on board, 15 - including Mr Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares - were rescued after escaping on to a lifeboat.

The body of Canadian-Antiguan national Recaldo Thomas, who was working as a chef on the superyacht, was recovered at the scene of the sinking on Monday.

The boat trip was a celebration of Mr Lynch's acquittal in a fraud case in the US.

The businessman, who founded software giant Autonomy in 1996, was cleared in June of carrying out a massive fraud relating to its 11 billion dollar (£8.64 billion) sale to US company Hewlett Packard.

Lynch family 'in shock' after Sicily tragedy

The family of Mike and Hannah Lynch, who died after a luxury yacht sank off the coast of Sicily, have said they are "devastated" and "in shock".

On Friday, 18-year-old Hannah became the final missing passenger to be recovered from the wreckage of the Bayesian superyacht.

The discovery comes as unconfirmed reports in the Italian media have said that prosecutors are set to announce a manslaughter investigation into the incident.

The pair, alongside Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judy Bloomer, Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda Morvillo were lost when the yacht sank at around 5am local time on Monday.

In a statement, Mike and Hannah's family said: "The Lynch family is devastated, in shock and is being comforted and supported by family and friends.

"Their thoughts are with everyone affected by the tragedy. They would like to sincerely thank the Italian coastguard, emergency services and all those who helped in the rescue.

Hannah praised for her love of 'learning, literature and life' in heartfelt tribute

Hannah Lynch's former teacher has praised her love for "learning, literature and life" in a heartfelt tribute.

Jon Mitropoulos-Monk reflected on Hannah's exceptional qualities, saying: "I've never taught someone who combined sky-high intellectual ability with warmth and enthusiasm in the way Hannah did."

He fondly recalled her impact in the classroom, adding: "She lit up the classroom with her energy, passion for learning and sheer intelligence (though never with a hint of arrogance)."

"She loved literature, learning and life. She was so excited to start studying English at Oxford, a goal she had worked so hard towards."

"I taught Hannah for four years. I will remember her for what she taught me: kindness, compassion and commitment."

Hannah Lynch, 18, received her A-level results last week and had secured a place at Oxford.

The Latymer Upper School in Hammersmith, London, where she was a pupil, said everyone was "incredibly shocked" following the tragedy.

Search crews 'recover body of final missing person'.

Search crews have recovered the final body from the wreckage of the yacht.

A green body bag was seen being brought to Porticello from the site of the sinking at just before 1pm local time.

Hannah Lynch, 18, daughter of British tycoon Mike Lynch, was the last of six people missing.

Efforts to recover body of final missing person 'in progress'

Salvatore Cocina, the head of Sicily's civil protection agency, has said that efforts to recover the body of the final person missing from the superyacht are "in progress".

The only individual who remained unaccounted for was 18-year-old Hannah Lynch, daughter of British tycoon Mike Lynch.

Shortly after midday local time, several boats carrying divers departed from Porticello, heading to the site where the yacht sank off the coast of Sicily.

Italian divers 'find body of last missing person'

Italian divers have found a body in the search for missing 18-year-old Hannah Lynch, according to Reuters news agency.

Hannah, the daughter of tech tycoon Mike, was the last of six passengers missing from the sinking off the coast of Sicily on Monday.

Hannah was a bright student who had recently secured a place to read English at Oxford.

Mr Lynch, his daughter Hannah, Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judy Bloomer, Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda Morvillo were lost when the yacht sank at around 5am local time on Monday.

Of the 22 passengers and crew on board, 15 - including Mr Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares - were rescued after escaping on to a lifeboat.

Search for tycoon's daughter has not been 'easy or quick'

A spokesman for the Italian Coastguard said the search for the British tycoon Mike Lynch's daughter Hannah has not been “easy or quick”, comparing the sunken yacht to an “18-storey building full of water”.

Vincenzo Zagarola told the PA news agency: “From the first moment it has not been easy or quick to inspect the boat.

“Think of an 18-storey building full of water.”

'Manslaughter probe is launched' over sinking of Bayesian superyacht

Italian authorities have reportedly launched a formal investigation into the sinking of the superyacht Bayesian off the Sicilian coast.

The Prosecutor's Office of Termini Imerese, under the leadership of Ambrogio Cartosio, is probing the circumstances that led to the vessel's capsizing near Palermo shortly before 5am on Monday.

According to Italian media reports, the investigators are looking into offences of "shipwreck and multiple culpable homicide" against "unknown persons". These charges are comparable to manslaughter in the UK legal system.

Prosecutors will hold press conference tomorrow

Authorities in Termini Imerese, a town close to the site of the Bayesian superyacht disaster, have announced a press conference scheduled for tomorrow morning.

This comes amid reports that the local public prosecutor's office is collecting evidence that could lead to a criminal investigation into the yacht's sinking.

Mum and baby were on top deck when storm hit

A mother who held her baby daughter above the waves as the Bayesian sank was sleeping on the top deck as the deadly storm hit.

Charlotte Golunski, a partner at London-based venture capitalist firm Invoke Capital, was one of 15 people rescued after the tragedy.

The 35-year-old held daughter Sofia “with all her strength” as tragedy struck, said a doctor.

Dr Domenico Cipolla, head of paediatric care at the Di Cristina Children's Hospital in Palermo, told Sky News: “She said she was sleeping withthe child on deck while her husband was a further away in another part of the boat.

“She felt the oscillations of the ship and in an instant it was dark. She found herself in the water in just a few minutes.

“She said she tried to hold on to the child but lost the child from her grip for three seconds. She then managed to catch her in the water.'

Her partner, James Emsley, is recovering in hospital, he added.

Moving a metre within wreckage can take a day, says fire service

The search efforts inside the sunken superyacht Bayesian are progressing at an extremely slow pace, according to fire service spokesman Luca Cari.

In a statement to Sky News, Cari highlighted the challenges faced by the specialist teams, saying: "It's very difficult to move inside the wreckage."

Illustrating the painstaking nature of the operation, he added: "Moving just one metre can take up to 24 hours."

Raising Bayesian 'will cost 15 million euros and take up to eight weeks'

Nick Sloane, renowned for leading the Costa Concordia salvage operation in 2012, saysraising the Bayesian superyacht from the seabed off Sicility would cost approximately 15 million euros and take between six to eight weeks.

Sloane outlined the complex operation, whichwould require about 40 specialised divers and a large platform towed to the site.

A massive crane would then be used to lift the yacht, but with extreme caution. "If the yacht is pulled up too quickly it could buckle and breakup under the huge pressure of seawater inside it," Sloane explained.

The plan would involve removing the yacht's75-metre high mast before attempting to lift the vessel.

Sloane told La Repubblica newspaper: "I would say it would cost up to 15 million euros but possibly you could do it for a bit less."

Regarding the timeline, he added, "The recovery operation would take six to eight weeks. It could be completed before the second half of October."

Search operations continue, rescue service says

Italy's fire and rescue service has announced that the search for the last missing person from the superyacht disaster is still underway.

In a recent tweet, they confirmed that underwater search operations have resumed, describing the ongoing efforts as "long and delicate."

The service also shared images of rescue teams on boats, gearing up for another round of dives in their tireless pursuit to locate the final missing individual.

What we know so far

Here's a bullet-point summary to get you up to speed on the superyacht tragedy:

  • A superyacht called the Bayesian sank off the coast of Italy on Monday
  • Current toll: 7 believed dead, 15 survivors
  • Among the confirmed dead is tech magnate Mike Lynch
  • Other victims include Jonathan and Judy Bloomer, and Chris and Neda Morvillo
  • Survivors are recuperating at a hotel in Porticello
  • Sicily Investigators are examining why the Bayesian sank while a nearby sailboat was unaffected
  • The fifth body was recovered and brought to Porticello port on Thursday
  • Italian coastguard is optimistic about Friday's search efforts for 18-year-old Hannah Lynch
  • No immediate plans to raise the sunken yacht from the seabed
  • Tory MP David Davis vows to campaign against the US-UK extradition treaty in Lynch's memory

Tributes pour in for tech tycoon Mike Lynch

Mike Lynch, the British tycoon lost in the superyacht disaster, has been hailed as "a giant of a man" and a "visionary" as tributes poured in from the worlds of business and technology.

The 59-year-old was one of the creators of software giant Autonomy, which became one of the most prominent technology firms on the planet.

Co-founder David Tabizel said: "The world has lost a genius. His family have lost a giant of a man."

Eleanor Lightbody, chief executive of legal AI company Luminance, said in a statement: "Mike was a visionary unlike any other. He had a unique ability to spot the next technological revolution and solve tomorrow's challenges before others even knew they were coming.

"Beyond that, it was his connection to people that made him special.

"He had a steadfast belief in the UK's technology sector, in our incredible academic institutions, and in the talent he took the time to spot and nurture, regardless of background or discipline.

"Above all, Mike was a kind man...and will be sorely missed."

Italian coast guard ‘trust’ there will be progress.

The Italian coast guard has expressed optimism about Friday's search for Hannah Lynch.

When questioned about potential developments, spokesman Vincenzo Zagarola said: "We trust".

Superyacht crew ‘had 16-minute window’ to avoid tragedy

The crew of tech billionaire Mike Lynch's luxury yacht had a narrow 16-minute window to avert disaster, according to the Italian Sea Group's CEO Giovanni Costantino.

The company, which owns the Perini Navi shipyard where the ill-fated Bayesian was constructed, maintains the vessel's build quality was not at fault.

Costantino instead points to human error as the cause of the tragedy. He told The Financial Times: “The torture lasted 16 minutes. It went down, not in one minute as some scientists have said. It went down in 16 minutes. You can see it from the charts, from the AIS [Automatic Identification System] tracking chart.

“The captain should have prepared the boat and put it in a state of alert and of safety, just like the boat [the Sir Robert Baden Powell] anchored 350 metres away, which was built in 1957 and handled the [weather] event brilliantly.”

Search continues for tycoon's daughter

The search is continuing for 18-year-old Hannah Lynch, the final person missing from the wreck of the Bayesian.

The body of her father, tech tycoon Mike Lynch, was recovered on Thursday, while his wife Angela Bacares survived that sunk the boat they were on on Monday.

Divers paused their efforts at 8pm off the coast of Sicily last night and the seach effort resumed on Friday morning.

Body of last missing person, Lynch's daughter, retrieved from yacht wreck

yachting operations specialist

PORTICELLO, Italy – Italian divers have retrieved the body of British tech magnate Mike Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, who was the last person still unaccounted for after the family’s luxury yacht sank this week off Sicily .

Seven people, including Mr Lynch himself, died when the 56m-long sail boat, the Bayesian, capsized during a fierce, pre-dawn storm on Aug 19 off Porticello, near Palermo. Fifteen people survived, including Mr Lynch’s wife and the yacht’s captain.

Mr Lynch’s family is devastated and in shock, a spokesperson for the family said on Aug 23, in their first public comments since the yacht sank.

“Their thoughts are with everyone affected by the tragedy. They would like to sincerely thank the Italian coast guard, emergency services and all those who helped in the rescue,” the statement said.

“Their one request now is that their privacy be respected at this time of unspeakable grief.”

Prosecutors in the nearby town of Termini Imerese are looking into possible human error that might have led to the disaster. As yet, nobody has been placed under formal investigation and none of the survivors have commented publicly.

Hannah’s body was discovered on Aug 23 by specialist divers who have been scouring the submerged vessel for the past five days, a senior official with knowledge of the rescue operation said, declining to be named.

The five other dead passengers were recovered on Aug 21 and 22. The body of the only crew member who died, onboard chef Recaldo Thomas, was found near the wreck on Aug 19.

Official identification of the corpses and autopsies will take place in Palermo.

The sinking has puzzled naval marine experts, who say a boat like the Bayesian, built by Italian high-end yacht manufacturer Perini, should have withstood the storm and should not, in any case, have sunk as quickly as it did.

The yacht’s captain, Mr James Cutfield, his eight surviving crew members and passengers have been questioned by the coast guard on behalf of prosecutors. Investigators are due to hold a news conference on Aug 24.

Complex salvage operation

Mr Giovanni Costantino, CEO of the Italian Sea Group, which owns Perini, told Reuters the shipwreck was the result of a string of “indescribable, unreasonable errors” made by the crew, and ruled out any design or construction failings.

The Bayesian is lying on its side, apparently intact at a depth of 50m. Pulling it out of the sea may help investigators determine what happened, but the operation is likely to be complex and costly.

Mr Nick Sloane, a South African engineer who led the operation to salvage the Costa Concordia cruise liner that sank in 2012, said in Italian media interviews on Aug 23 that the operation would cost up to €15 million (S$22 million).

He told daily La Repubblica that salvaging the yacht would take six to eight weeks, including preparation work, and would have to be completed by mid-October, without specifying the reasons for the timing.

Bringing the yacht to the surface will have to be done “very, very slowly”, and might take a couple of days, he said.

Mr Lynch, 59, was one of Britain’s best-known tech entrepreneurs and had invited friends to join him on the yacht to celebrate his acquittal in June in a US fraud trial.

Among those who died in the wreck were Mr Lynch’s lawyer Mr Chris Morvillo and Mr Jonathan Bloomer, a Morgan Stanley banker who had appeared as a character witness in the case on his behalf.

UK tycoon's daughter is seventh, final victim of Sicily yacht sinking

Lynch had invited friends onto the sailing boat Bayesian to celebrate his recent acquittal in a massive US fraud case

Divers searching a sunken superyacht off Sicily recovered the body of the teenage daughter of UK tech tycoon Mike Lynch Friday, the seventh and final victim of a tragedy in which the businessman also perished.

Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah had been among six passengers reported missing after the "Bayesian" went down off the north coast of the Italian island in a storm early on Monday morning.

After Hannah's body was brought ashore on Friday, her family issued a statement describing their "unspeakable grief".

"The Lynch family is devastated, in shock and is being comforted and supported by family and friends," it said.

Search teams had recovered the bodies of four of Lynch's friends on Wednesday, and that of the entrepreneur himself on Thursday.

The body of a man believed to be the yacht's chef had been found a few hours after the sailing ship sank.

Lynch, 59, had invited friends and family onto the sailing boat to celebrate his recent acquittal in a massive US fraud case.

But the 56-metre (185-foot) British-flagged yacht was struck by a waterspout -- akin to a mini-tornado -- before dawn on Monday as it was anchored off Porticello, near Palermo.

It sank within minutes and now lies on the sea bed 50 metres down.

- 'Heartbroken' -

Hannah had just finished her end-of-school exams and had a place to study English literature at Oxford University.

Friends described her as warm, loving and "charming and ferociously intelligent", according to one of the tributes issued by the family.

Lynch, once dubbed the British "Bill Gates", was "the most brilliant mind and (most) caring person I have ever known", said another.

The businessman had been acquitted on all charges in a San Francisco court in June after he was accused of an $11 billion fraud linked to the sale of his software firm Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard.

US lawyer Chris Morvillo, a partner at top law firm Clifford Chance who worked on the trial, also died in the sinking, along with his wife Neda.

Morvillo's firm Clifford Chance paid tribute to the couple, saying all were "heartbroken at the tragic passing... and still coming to terms with this terrible loss".

The bodies of Jonathan Bloomer, the chair of Morgan Stanley International, and his wife Judy, were also found.

The Bloomer family said they were suffering "unimaginable grief" for a couple who had been together for five decades.

"Our only comfort is that they are still together now," the family said.

Many questions remain about why the yacht sank, and so quickly, when other boats nearby were unaffected.

Italian prosecutors have opened a probe and will hold a press conference on Saturday.

On Thursday the head of the company which built the boat said the tragedy could have been avoided.

"Everything that was done reveals a very long summation of errors," said Giovanni Costantino, head of the Italian Sea Group, which includes the Perini Navi company that built Bayesian in 2008.

- Bad weather forecast -

He told Italy's Corriere della Sera newspaper that bad weather was forecast and all the passengers should have been gathered at a pre-arranged assembly point, with all the doors and hatches closed.

"Instead it took on water with the guests still in the cabin. They ended up in a trap, those poor people ended up like mice in a trap," he said.

The Bayesian, owned by Lynch's family, boasted a 75-metre mast, the tallest aluminium sailing mast in the world, according to the Charter World website.

Raising the wreck would likely cost some 15 million euros and take "six to eight weeks", according to the salvage engineer who led the operation to recover the Costa Concordia cruise ship, which sank off Italy in 2012.

To recover the yacht, the mast could be removed on the seabed but the boat would be lifted up whole using a giant crane and a team of 40 specialist divers, South African engineer Nick Sloane told the Repubblica daily.
