Yacht Club Beach - Cape Coral Yacht Club Community Park

Yacht Club Beach , also known as Yacht Club Community Park , is a pristine public beach nestled in the coastal city of Cape Coral, Florida. Discover one of the best beaches, with its stunning white sand and crystal-clear waters, it offers visitors a serene and relaxing environment to soak up the sun and enjoy the beauty of nature. The beach is open to the public and provides free access year-round, making it an ideal spot for locals and tourists alike.

UPDATE October 2023: Yacht Club Beach - The public beach is expected to reopen sometime around November 10, 2023.

Cape Coral is a vibrant, sun-soaked haven of natural beauty, and Yacht Club Public Beach is its crown jewel. Found on the southern outskirts of the city limits, visitors are greeted with powdery white sand and a blissful wave-lapped shoreline that stretches for miles.

Yacht Club Beach, located on the Caloosahatchee River offers more than just breathtaking views – it’s also home to an array of activities and amenities that will make your visit even more enjoyable. From lounging in the sun on a beach chair or swing, to trying out some water sports such as jet skiing or paddle boarding, there’s something for everyone here! The beach also has facilities like changing rooms and restrooms, plus a restaurant called The Boathouse that makes for a great lunch spot if you don't want to bring a picnic lunch after a long morning on the sand.  The Boathouse serves breakfast, lunch and dinner right at the beach.  It's so nice to sit outside in the sun and see the views of Yacht Club Public Beach and the river.  Live music is played on weekends.

Even though our beach is small, it's perfect for families, and we don't have problems with partying spring-breakers, which is nice during March and April.

There's plenty of soft white sand and sunshine to please everyone. The beach is only a 15-minute drive from most of the Cape and parking is free.   Walk on the fishing pier, pack the beach toys, and bring a picnic to enjoy on the shoreline or a complete the day with a beautiful sunset and an evening of star-gazing.

 When I homeschooled, we would whoop it up a bit ... we'd grab our books, bikinis, beach gear, and hit the sand!

At Yacht Club Beach , the fun never ends. Apart from swimming and sunbathing, visitors can engage in various water sports, including kayaking, paddle boarding, and jet skiing. The beach also features volleyball courts, perfect for friendly matches under the sun. If you prefer a more laid-back experience, grab a book and relax under the shade of a palm tree, enjoying the gentle gulf breeze. The beach's amenities include restrooms, picnic areas, public boat ramp and convenient parking lot, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable visit for all.

It's fun to go to the Sunset Celebration, which happens the first Wednesday of the month from 4-7PM or 5-8PM,  depending on Daylight Savings, October - June.

During the celebration, there's a nice craft show at the ballroom pavilion.

Cape Coral making major changes to the Yacht Club Community Park

C ape Coral is moving ahead with massive design changes that will transform The Yacht Club Community Park into a more extravagant waterfront gem for the city.

It will include a new resort-style pool, restaurant, and community center in the master plan.

"I believe the draw will be a lot bigger than the Yacht Club used to be," Councilmember Dan Sheppard said.

The Cape Coral Yacht Club, which includes the yacht basin, tennis courts, a swimming pool, a ballroom, and a riverside beach, has served as a popular attraction and staple for the city since the 1960s.

At a Wednesday city meeting, the council discussed the Yacht Club master plan, picking up from a previous discussion at a January winter retreat .

There the council gave direction to adjust the original renovation plans, which could include a two-story ballroom, removing the tennis courts, and rearranging the area to accommodate a parking garage and a new restaurant.

Now the council has decided on a framework from the first concept that was presented by Kimley-Horn, a consulting firm that focuses on public and private developments.

Previous discussions said the project could cost up to $100 million.

The newly updated plans include:

  • A curved driveway into the park that wraps around the proposed parking garage and stormwater pond toward the east and south portions of the park
  • A three-story parking garage with 500 spaces
  • A new restaurant near the beach and entryway, supplementing the current waterside restaurant, The Boathouse Tiki Bar & Restaurant.
  • New restrooms
  • A resort-style pool
  • A new harbormaster building near boat trailer parking
  • A second pier with shade north of the park
  • A new Yacht Club Community Center
  • A stormwater pond
  • A new fountain

City Manager Michael Ilczyszyn said the changes will be utilized for the site plan.

The city had planned in 2022 to close the park for two years for renovations that included replacing the seawalls and marina wet slips, replacing the harbormaster building and boat ramp, and building a three-story parking garage and beach restrooms.

The beach would also be expanded, and utilities relocated.

Then Hurricane Ian struck on Sept. 28, 2022, delaying plans, and shuttering the beach for more than a year.

During its January winter retreat, council members decided to take a "clean slate" approach to renovate the facilities, which included demolition of all the facilities.

The facilities included the main ballroom building, the Tony Rotino Center, tennis courts, pool, and harbormaster.

Many residents opposed the plan but the city intends to move forward  with a complete demolition by early 2024.

Councilmembers raise concerns

James Pankonin, a landscape architect with Kimley-Horn, gave a presentation. He highlighted two concepts.

The second concept presented was similar to the first, but the road would be realigned and cut around the stormwater pond and parking garage, the proposed restaurant faced the main road, had a smaller pool design, and a longer pier.

Many of the elements were incorporated into the concept, minus the smaller pool.

Councilmember Tom Hayden, who was recently against the demolition of the main ballroom building, liked the plans.

"I realized after the original plans of wanting to renovate the old one weren't going to work out, I moved on. And I like the fact that we are bringing something to the community that will attract people that are interested in different things with the beach, resort pool, event space, and boating," Hayden said.

He wants to see a room dedicated to the old Yacht Club building in the new community center.

The council came to a consensus on many aspects of what the park would look like but many did have concerns with amenities such as parking, the tennis courts, and the pool.

Sheppard liked the plans but feared parking would become an issue.

"My only fear is we have nothing like this in the city and when this is done, I believe the draw will be a lot bigger than the Yacht Club used to be, so my concerns are parking," Sheppard said.

Hayden and Mayor John Gunter shared the concern.

The city plans to conduct a parking study to account for the potential issue.

Another Councilmember, Bill Steinke, wanted to see the tennis courts preserved.

"I play tennis at the Yacht Club very regularly, and we have a great number of residents that bought their homes in that area for proximity to tennis," Steinke said.

He brought up the possibility of using the parking garage's roof as an area for the tennis courts and, possibly, pickleball courts.

Gunter said the cost would be too high.

"I'd rather spend that money on parking or putting tennis courts somewhere," Gunter said.

Steinke relented if tennis courts could be made available in another part of the city, preferably in the south.

Steinke also brought the resort-style pool and said they should take into account how residents use it.

"The concern there is that we have many current residents that use the park and the swimming pool for exercise and lane swimming," Steinke said.

Councilmembers Patty Cummings and Jessica Cosden shared the sentiment and wanted to see another pool for the public.

Gunter ended the discussion by saying he wanted to see a timeline for the project.

Ilczyszyn said more activity will take place at the park soon, including the beach reopening and the demolition of the buildings. He's hopeful that permits will get through in due time.

What's next for Yacht Club Park?

The council will meet on the topic again, after the city's winter hiatus in 2024.

Kimley-Horn will update the designs with the council's feedback and have a public meeting where residents will get to look at the new concept before moving forward with a permanent design.

Council discusses new Yacht Club concept plans

The new vision for the Cape Coral Yacht Club is becoming clearer.

Cape Coral City Council reached a consensus Wednesday on certain amenities, including a resort-style pool, a longer replacement pier, centralized restrooms and possibly a water feature.

Core elements include more beach, a new two-story community center, a three-story parking garage and a revamped marina to accommodate larger boats.

The conversation was brought to Council so staff has direction for the rebuilding of the center part of the park, which was not been discussed during the winter retreat.

“Thanks, or no thanks, to Hurricane Ian, that scope has grown,” City Manager Michael Ilczyszyn said.

Cape Coral City Council discussed a pair of design concepts for the Yacht Club Park rebuild Wednesday, with the concept above garnering consensus with some tweaks.

As a result of the retreat in January, the city moved forward with expanding the planned parking garage, shifting the harbor master building, and earmarking space for a second restaurant.

“We will come back to you after the hiatus to discuss the building itself — the ballroom and more of a convention center in order to include the programming from the senior center,” he said.

James Pankonin with Kimley-Horn and Associates took Council through two concepts, which were similar in design before the board overwhelming gave a nod of approval for the first concept.

This design features the community center in the center of the property, which is fairly similar to where it sits today, but with a different orientation to capture the sunset views. The building will range between 35,000 to 40,000 square feet, an increase from the now 21,000 square feet with no true front or back of the building. The concept includes adding the fountain as a site feature by the center.

Councilmember Bill Steinke said if they use the second concept roadway that veers off to the right leading into the park, the fountain could go somewhere in the entry as a focal point to provide a memorial of the original Yacht Club.

Cape Coral City Council also liked some of the elements of the second offered option.

“That would be pretty cool,” he said.

It was also discussed that a water feature could be added to the stormwater pond at the entry and keep the fountain by the center.

Most of on Council liked the second concept as far as how the road wraps around the retention pond at the entry.

Mayor John Gunter said this option would allow them to have larger trees and offer additional buffering between the community, houses and the parking garage.

This option also has a resort-style pool with layering amenities such as a play area, upper landscape, garden areas and pathways of different surfaces.

Pankonin said the resort-style pool is about 15,000 square feet compared to the 6,000-square-foot pool there today. There was also discussion of adding an area where visitors could swim laps, which Ilczyszyn said could be accommodated through programming of specific times.

There is also an additional restaurant option to the south of the parking garage.

Councilmember Dan Sheppard suggested having a smaller establishment that services people at the beach and pool with quick drinks and light things to eat.

“Not really a restaurant that we have now, more of walkup type of establishment,” he said.

Ilczyszyn said staff will look to see when programming the building if they can accommodate pool-side concessions and quick bites.

“We haven’t finalized programming in the building,” he said.

The concept includes dedicated slips adjacent to the pier for individuals to launch and recover their boats, which was a concern brought up from a few council members.

“We absolutely have a launch and recover facility plan next to the boat ramp,” Ilczyszyn said.

He said they are also changing the nature of the yacht basin with a program for much larger vessels with slips to accommodate boats from 60 feet to 24 feet or less. In addition, there is also a big open spot on the east of the boat ramp for a pump out facility.

The L-shaped parking garage is estimated to have about 500 parking spaces, an increase from 305 parking spaces in the original design.

Councilmember Keith Long said that parking is parking and, in a way, it sets the occupancy limit.

The amount of onsite parking gave much of the City Council angst, as they feared it would not be enough for what they anticipate will be a very popular destination once completed.

“One of the things we are really trying to do here is capture alternative modes of transportation,” Ilczyszyn said.

The concept includes expanding the entire seawall, which currently has parallel parking for 13 boats, to accommodate three times that number.

“We want people to come by boat. Enjoy the location, views, restaurant, and beach and go home by boat. We don’t want to over accommodate vehicles,” he said, adding that there are options to ride share, carpool and boat.

Council also questioned the size of the harbor master building, which Ilczyszyn explained would serve four purposes. The building will house the Cape Coral Police Department Marine Unit in a quarter of the space with workstations, meeting rooms, restrooms and communication networks. Another quarter of the building will be an uplands facility for the marina with washing and laundry facilities to support a higher level of standard. Another quarter of the building will feature a ship store to sell goods and the last will be utilized for the actual harbor master.

The historic ballroom and much of the other structure are awaiting demolition, giving the city a largely blank palette on which to build its new vision.

The Boathouse Restaurant, already refurbished and rebuilt after Hurricane Ian, will remain open through the process and will be part of the new park.

Ilczyszyn said they have some demolition plans that are being put together and are going out for bid.

They are bringing in heavy equipment in December to start preparing for the future of the park, he added.

“We have not stopped any original permitting for the replacement of the seawall, marina replacement, harbor master building. (We have) still been advancing that with Army Corps on there. We are hopeful we can get that permit issued and award that contract to get seawalls going. We think this is all laying out well.”

City Council raises new question about Cape Coral Yacht Club project: How to pay for it?

The city of Cape Coral is looking at a new plan to pay for increasing costs of the Yacht Club Community Park  renovations.

The City Council is considering moving away from the initial $10.9 million Parks and Recreation General Obligation (GO) Bond funding for the Yacht Club improvements to a 20-year financing plan that would cover $60 million in debt. 

The GO Bond funds for the Yacht Club will instead go to cover the excess cost of other parks being built around the city. 

"Probably a year ago, we estimated that we were going to start seeing significant cost in inflation as we move forward with implementing the entire GO Bond program," City Manager Roberto Hernandez said. 

Staff recommended a 20 year debt issue for whatever the final improvement cost will be to finance the entire Yacht Club project.

"We would look at the Yacht Club as a standalone project, and we look at funding that with debt in its entirety," said Mark Mason, director of financial services at Cape Coral.

Background on the Yacht Club Project: New plan for Cape yacht club boosts shoreline access, moves boat launch

Cape Coral announced the Yacht Club would close for two years during construction due to safety concerns starting April 1.

The closure is estimated to save the project four months in construction time and $340,000 in costs.

However, delays in the environmental permitting process caused the city to put the project's construction on hold. 

The renovation includes replacing seawalls and marina wet slips, replacing the harbormaster building and boat ramp, and building a parking garage and beach restrooms. The beach will also be expanded, and utilities will be relocated. The parking garage will be three stories tall.

The city plans to use revenue from slip rentals, parking fees and the Yacht Club restaurant to pay back the debt.

Mason said slip rental rates and the proposed parking rate, which hasn't been approved yet, will need to be changed. 

"Right now, we are talking about $2 per hour for parking rates, but it's one of the things that we will need to look at in the future," Mason said. 

A majority of the council was onboard with this plan, but many had concerns.

Councilmember Tom Hayden was in support of the 20-year plan, but he worried about interest rates.

Councilmember Gloria Tate said she worries that the $60 million will not be enough to fund the full scope of the project.

"While I support the $60 million in theory, I don't know if it's enough," Tate said. "I still see the Yacht Club's scope as evolving."

Mason said the estimation of the debt is a "point in time" analysis, so the figures and cost could change.

Michael Ilczyszyn, interim public works director, said Wright Construction Group has the bids and vendors for the project in order, but the city has asked them to hold off because of the permit delays. 

He said once the city gets the permits, they should be able to start construction within 45 days. 

During the discussion, Ilczyszyn also brought up the possibility of a second restaurant being built at the Yacht Club.  

"I've been very candid with everyone saying we are exploring a second restaurant option. It was part of second phase," Ilczyszyn said.

Hernandez clarified the city would be open to public-private partnership to open a second restaurant, but it wouldn't be part of the current project's scope. 

Councilmembers Jessica Cosden and Robert Welsh had some concerns with the plan because they worried that the city might not be able to afford the monthly bond payments. 

Mason said the general fund, legally available revenue, would be used as a backstop to cover costs that Yacht Club revenue wouldn't cover. 

Mayor John Gunter said he's OK with the $60 million threshold, but he said he wants to see the figures when available to determine how much revenue the Yacht Club would generate. 

"If you are looking at a $60 million GO Bond at $3.8 million (per year), that's a pretty hefty amount of money you need to generate that type of revenue for," he said. "That's almost $320,000 a month that you have to generate. I just don't see those numbers."

Hernandez said there will be many workshops on this issue in the future, and the city will need to issue the debt at a later meeting in the next six months.

CAPE CORAL, Fla. — "What do we need all the parking spots for?"

A question many at Tuesday's workshop meeting had and had some seniors in the crowd demanding answers.

"People aren't going to walk that far," said Tony Adinolfi, a Cape Coral resident. "It seems like it's not far but it's far when you want to go eat."

"That far" is 1,060 feet from the new garage to the boat house. It was the one thing in this master plan that caught everyone's attention and angst.

"You're not going to be able to park and this idea of a drop-off.... Yeah, like somebody's going to drop people off and then have to go all the way to the parking garage, wait for a bus, get a bus or walk over... in 90-degree heat. Are you kidding? There's no point," said Laurie Lehmann, resident.

"You can walk there if you're a young person, three to four minutes, and have a talk, but if you're an older person, it may take you 10 minutes and it's gonna be a deterrent," said Robert Sutter, a resident.

City staff and architects didn't have many solutions to offer but promised residents that they were heard, including their concerns about paying for that far-away parking garage.

"That's pathetic," said Lehman. "Our taxes aren't high enough. When are they going to get their hands out of our pockets?"

Despite the debate over how to get to the Yacht Club, there were other improvements that were well-received, including the club's Key West theme - and of course - its ability to stand up to the next hurricane.

"Some of the regulations have changed so the building is going to be elevated, a little higher than the previous building, and everything will be designed to be hurricane resistant, meet all the building codes and we're raising the sea wall a couple of feet to provide some more flood protection," said Dave Hyyti, City of Cape Coral.

Rosen Park can be accessed via boat by turning West at marker #58. Marine Services staff monitors VHF channel 16. Boat Trailer Parking Fees: There is a $15 per day boat trailer parking fee, and Cape Coral Residents may obtain an annual parking decal for $75.
