Victoria Thunder Tiger Description

This is a radio controlled sail boat. Advances in miniaturization of radio control equipment, high technology construction materials for the hull and rigging, and small batteries have resulted in models that work like the real thing.

The boat is really fun to sail, responding quickly to the controls and moving quickly even in small winds. It is easy to build and later modify to improve performance. Care must be taken when modifying your boat as many modifications are not allowed by the class rules and will make your boat ineligable for competition.

I gave my father-in-law a kit, so I would have someone to race. He built a standard Victoria by Thunder Tiger. I was not happy with the standard version and so decided to modify my boat.

Modifications:

The objectives for many of my modifications were simple.

  • water tight: No boat will ever be completely dry. I wanted to make mine as dry as possible.
  • ease of rigging: The cleats and line adjusters were difficult for me to use. I wanted to be able to make adjustements easily and for the adjustments to be retained, no matter the stress or wind speed.
  • increased strength: Some of the components are weak and subject to breaking or cracking. These needed to be reinforced or replaced with stronger material.
  • weight reduction: Reducing the weight in general, and above the water level in particular will make the boat respond more quickly, both in turning and acceleration.

Do not modify your boat if you expect to compete in the Victoria Class. Only certain modifications are allowed and must be carefully considered before doing them. Many of the modifications below will help solve multiple problems but most are not legal for competition.

The hull is vacume formed and has some thin areas. Additional fiber glass reinforcements were added in the bow to prevent water leaking. The keel area is also weak, so some plywood and glass were added here as well.

Two stringers were added across the hull on which to mount the servo and receiver board. Note the two holes at each end of the board and the holes in the stringers. The stringers have nuts epoxied to the bottom of the stringer and the receiver board bolts through. The four batteries, now NiMH rechargables, are installed in two battery holders and mounted with double stick tape. The batteries can be moved around in the bottom hull to balance the boat. I will use Velcro fastening tape next time.

The sail servo has a new arm fabricated out of thin aluminium. The pulley on the left of the arm adjusts the main sail and the one on the right adjustes the jib. The receiver is mounted under the board in the continued effort to lower the weight in the boat.

The keel is attached with a Nyloc nut, in order to prevent loss while at sea. The stays are attached to brass eyes, bolted into small wood ply plates under the deck. The stays are attached to clips similar to those found on model aircraft linkages and are removable. Small loops have been soldered to allow attachement of the lines. These allow tensioning of the rig.

The mast is a carbon fiber tube, found at many kite stores. Many of the rigging materials, including sail cloth can be found online at kite supply houses. The boom and jib boom are also carbon fiber and have small brass cotter pins inserted in small holes where lines need to be attached. I used fishing gear for many of the line connectors and fishing line for most of the lines.

The on and off switch is actually also the battery charging port. A five pin DIN connector is mounted to the deck. It allows wiring access to each separate battery pack and to the receiver and servos. The plug shown in the picture above, is connected to a string attached to the mast base, and is for sailing. When plugged in, it connects the batteries to the receiver and servos. When the plug is removed, the boat is effectively turned off.

Another plug shown to the left, is connected to a battery charger and can be inserted in the socket. Now the batteries are connected to the charger and the batteries can be charged without removing them.

One of my biggest complaints was the difficulty of using the small cleats and line adjusters.

In order to adjust the jib and main sail lines, I lead the lines through the holes into the cockpit. I then plugged the holes, effectively pinching the lines in place, with tooth picks. The remaining line was looped around the picks with half hitches. Not elegant but it worked.

The through deck fair lead is a Nylon concrete fastener with rounded edges. This eases the movement of the line through the deck and provides some mimimal water protection with a raised area.

The hatch cover is clear plastic sheet, as found at the local office supply and is attached using 3M tape. The type of tape used to water proof model power boats has been extensively tested and works well.

The masthead crane was fabricated out of aluminium and has two brass bolts and nuts to allow adjusting jib tension and main sail height. The line is wound around the bolt once and the nuts tightened. Again, not elegant, but easy to do.

Many lines were upgraded to a 60 pound test line. The line has a flattened oval cross section and when tightened, vibrates in heavy winds. It is an amazing sound, similar to that found on real boats as the wind hums and screams.

1975 Vancouver Vancouver-27 Offshore Cutter

  • Description

Seller's Description

Are you looking for a comfortable well-found offshore cruiser at an affordable price? Wendelin is one of those good ole boats. A proven design with a pedigree that includes sailing to New Zealand, Hawaii and Mexico (three separate trips which all departed from the Pacific Northwest). Weve owned Wendelin since July 2000. In 2009-10 we completed a refit before sailing north around the northern tip of Vancouver Island, south to Puerto Vallarta Mexico, and up the Sea of Cortez to Guaymas. We’ve had the most amazing adventures in the Sea of Cortez and south along Pacific Mexico. She is currently stored on-the-hard in a secure privately owned facility in San Blas Mexico (just north of Puerto Vallarta, 80 or so NM along the Riviera Nayarit, past Sayulita, Rincon de Guaybitos etc.)

The sails, halyards and sheets are all in good shape. The upper and lower shrouds were upgraded in 2010. The interior was recently painted but is in need of a couple of coats of varnish. The topsides could use a paint job as could the deckif youre particularly enthusiasticand needing something to do other than sail😊 The bottom is in great shape. It received a fresh coat of bottom paint in Feb of 2024. There have never been blisters on her hull. In 2000 three coats of inter-protect were applied. The 12 hsp single-cylinder Yanmar diesel is not running at the moment. A rebuild of the head is underway.

Wendelin is a great boat, very well equipped, sea-kindly with a very balanced helm. She has been a good friend to us. Shed work well for a experienced single-hander with a passion for sailing and exploration. Knowledge and experience with diesel engines would be a plus.

For more information about this classic design, we can provide a copy of Robert Harris book Tracks on the Water about the origins of the Vancouver 27 and the article Test of Time Vancouver 27 published in the Classic Boat Magazine (June 2009).

Asking price $12,500 CAD ($9,500 USD)

Equipment: Please see to our ad on Craiglist Victoria for a detailed list of the equipment on board….and for more photos.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

From BlueWaterBoats.org :

The first in the Vancouver Yacht series, the Vancouver 27 is a ‘go anywhere’ pocket cruiser designed by Canadian Robert Harris in 1972. This sturdy 27-foot cutter was squarely aimed for couples looking to sail the world’s oceans. Purpose built for exactly this purpose, the first boat sailed successfully from British Columbia to New Zealand and back. The solid good-looking design attracted enough attention that molds were made from the second boat built. Various versions went on to be produced in Canada and in England and more than 250 have been built in total including the extended 28 foot version, the Vancouver 28, which is still being made in England today. Canadian production ended when the molds were destroyed by a storm in 1988.

Though small and relatively heavy, she’s uncompromising with few concessions to speed and performance. Under the waterline there’s a full keel with a cutaway forefoot which gives her a stable helm and good balance on all points of sail. In the UK the design was tweaked by adding three inches to the beam at the waterline to stiffen her up, the result being a pronounced tumblehome in the hull which the Canadian boats don’t have.

In breaking seas her high freeboard, neat cockpit and built in bridge deck help prevent water below. Her propeller and rudder are protected from grounding and fouling damage by the set-up of her keel, skeg and stern-post. Lots of headroom, plenty of stowage space and ease of handling are characteristic. As would be expected by the design she’s not fast nor particularly close winded but she’s easy to handle in all conditions and ideal for a short-handed crew. English sailor Rona House can testify to this having completed a solo circumnavigation in her Vancouver 27. The cutter rig gives maximum sail plan versatility and the outboard rudder allows for use of self-steering mechanisms that are a cruiser’s best friend on long passages. Experience has shown that her traditional hull design copes easily with the rigors of offshore passages, even when chock full of cruising gear.

Inside the Vancouver 27 is a sensible small-boat layout just made for a couple at sea with three berths being the norm, although a four berth layout was also available. The three berth version has no berth forward but instead has the third berth aft in the saloon leaving plenty room for stowage up front as well as space for a generously sized quarter berth, galley and chart table. 6′ 6″ of headroom heads up the comfort factor inside.

Buyer’s Notes

The majority of boats are to be found in the UK although some can still be found in North America.  New boat prices can be obtained from Northshore yachts and a current search of the used boat market reveals prices for these boats between 12,200 – 26,600 Pounds Sterling or 19,500- 41,500 Canadian dollars depending on age and condition. Although no major problems have been discovered, the heel of the rudder is one weak point that needs careful inspection.

Vladivostok cruise port

Region Asia

Local Time 2024-09-20 14:52

Vladivostok is a port city located in Russia (northeastern Asia), and on Golden Horn Bay (Sea of Japan). The city covers a total area of approx 331 km2 (128 mi2) and has population around 0,6 million.

The port city is the terminus of Russia's largest Pacific railway system (Trans-Siberian Railroad) and also the main naval base of Russia's Pacific fleet. The harbor is being kept open by icebreakers during winter months and serves as base for whaling and fishing vessels. Far Eastern State University is also here. The city is a major center of scientific research.

After the port city is named the 2015-built icebreaker Vladivostok .

The town was founded in 1860 as a military outpost and grew rapidly after 1903 when the Trans-Siberian railway was completed. During 1918-1922, Vladivostok was occupied by Japanese and Allied forces.

Port Vladivostok is ice-free the whole year-round. In 2002, the port had a foreign shipping trade turnover worth USD 275 million. In 2015, a special economic zone was established within the free port.

The city's main industries/employers are the Russian naval base, cargo shipping, commercial fishing. Fishing accounts for about 4/5 of the commercial production. A major source of revenue is the Japanese cars import.

In 2012, the city hosted the 24th Summit of APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) forum on Russky Island. In preparation for the event, the city's infrastructure was improved and two giant cable-stayed bridges were built - Zolotoy Rog Bridge (over Golden Horn Bay, city center) and Russky Bridge (connecting with Russky Island).

The 4-lane Russky Bridge (across Eastern Bosphorus strait) is the world's longest cable-stayed bridge ever constructed -(length 3,1 km / 10,200 ft). Its longest span is 1,1 km (3622 ft). The bridge's clearance above is 70 m (230 ft). The construction cost around USD 1,1 billion.

In August 2016, the Chinese ship Chinese Taishan (former Costa Voyager) made a maiden port call. Liner's operator (Bohai Cruises) soon announced the company's decision to include Vladivostok in its regularly scheduled roundtrip itineraries.

On July 31, 2017, the Peace Boat-chartered cruise ship Ocean Dream made a maiden port call in Vladivostok, with around 1200 tourists from Japan and South Korea. The voyage departed Port Kobe (Japan) on July 27th and visited Yeosu (Korea) , Vladivostok, Hakodate (Japan) , Sakaiminato-Matsue (Japan) and Busan (Korea) .

In 2017, cruise ships managed by Costa Asia ( Carnival Corporation 's subsidiary) visited Port Vladivostok 6 times. The first vessel ( Costa Victoria - max capacity 2314 passengers) docked here in May 2016. In 2017, the cruise port handled 13 ship calls. In 2016, their number was 6.

In 2018, the area near the cruise berth was dredged to allow docking of bigger vessels. On February 26 was opened port's season 2018 with Amadea ( Phoenix Reisen ) carrying over 500 passengers. Among 2018's highlights were the maiden calls by the large liners MSC Splendida (3900 pax), Costa Serena (3600 pax) and Costa Fortuna (3250 pax). On May 12, 2018, Costa Serena became the ever-largest cruise ship docking in Vladivostok. The liner carried over 3000 passengers and crew. It arrived from South Korea (roundtrip Busan itinerary) being chartered by Lotte Tours. Tourists were greeted with a live performance by Far Eastern State Technical Fisheries University students (drummers, singers, dancers). The seaport and Vladivostok tour operators arranged a total of 79 buses each with a Korean-speaking tour guide.

In 2019 (March through October) were booked for berthing a total of 16 ships, among which the RCI-Royal Caribbean 's Quantum and Spectrum . Other large-sized liners were Costa Serena (5 times), Costa neoRomantica (3 times), Diamond Princess , Holland America 's Maasdam and Westerdam , Ocean Dream .

Season 2019 started on March 20 with MS Albatros (Phoenix Reisen), with estimated nearly 30,000 cruise passengers (plus ~70,000 ferry passengers) to be handled at Vladivostok Sea Terminal. In 2019, Vladivostok also restarted its homeport operations with locals and tourists able to book cruises leaving from Vladivostok (mainly to ports in Korea and Japan) and fly-cruise deals (via air/sea programs). There are plans for establishing a local (Russian) cruise line to operate itineraries to other Russian Far East destinations.

On Sept 9, 2019, Spectrum OTS became the ever-largest passenger ship to visit a Russian Federation port. The vessel docked in Vladivostok and was boarded by 200+ Russian VIP guests. Next is listed the 8-day "Russia and Japan Cruise" itinerary roundtrip from China.

Via Vladivostok, the Russian cargo shipping company FESCO serves three express routes connecting Russia with South Korea, China and Japan - Busan to Moscow (15-days transit launched June 2018), Shanghai to Moscow (20-days transit launched January 2017) and Toyama to Moscow (15-days transit launched April 2018). The new services allow delivery time reduction achieved by implementing new pass-through technology (port-railway). Busan to Vladivostok transit time is 2 days.

In January 2021, FESCO for the first time exported containerized grain delivered from Khabarovsk. The TEU-containers were shipped to China's Qingdao and Chiwan ports. FESCO's Russia-China service is 2-week (transit time 14 days). FESCO started bulk shipping of gran (from Krasnoyarsk) to China in 2018 with the new Siberia-to-Far East (Kamchatka and Magadan) service via FESCO-owned trains.

In December 2021, FESCO acquired JSC Port Gaydamak (FEMSTA containership terminal) which was planned for modernization and expansion in 2024. The facility is used mainly for transshipment (400,000+ tons of grain annually) and general cargoes. Also in December was inaugurated the "FESCO West Gate Bridge" (2-4-times a month intermodal containership service on the route Vladivostok- Kaliningrad/Baltiysk ) linking the Asia-Pacific countries with Europe. With an estimated transit time of 36 days, the Vladivostok-Kaliningrad service is nearly 1,5 times faster than the Suez Canal alternative.

Vladivostok cruise terminal

Cruise ships dock at Vladivostok Sea Terminal where their passengers are welcomed with a ceremony that includes live performances of traditional Russian dances, folklore songs and drummers. The event is organized by the company Vladivostok Sea Terminal, LLC.

To all passengers are given free city maps and tour guides, provided by Primorsky Region's Tourist Information Center. Traditionally, an outdoor market with Russian souvenirs is also organized for the disembarking tourists.

News, notes and thoughts:

8 September, 2012   / The 24th APEC summit, the meeting place of world leaders and businessmen, is being held in Vladivostok. It the most expensive APEC summit in history. The new complex of the Far Eastern Federal University on the Russky Island cost about USD 2.2 billion, cable-stayed bridge on the Russky Island - USD 1 billion, bridge over Zolotoy Rog Bay - USD 620 million.

1 September, 2012   / Total cost of preparing for the APEC summit in Vladivostok is comparable to the cost of the Olympic Games in London. In preparation for the event Russia spent more than $ 16 billion. The summit will be held in Vladivostok from 2 to 9 September. Was it the best way to spend the money? Rhetorical question.

History of Vladivostok

Foundation of vladivostok.

In the distant past, the territory of today’s Vladivostok was part of the multi-ethnic kingdom of Balhae (698-926). At the beginning of the 13th century, on the territory of Primorye, there were several towns of the Jurchen kingdom of Eastern Xia. All of them were destroyed by the Mongols as a result of the attack of 1233, after which the territory fell into desolation.

From the standpoint of official Russian historiography, until the appearance of the Russian pioneers, this region remained untouched and forgotten, which was partly facilitated by the policy of self-isolation pursued in China and Korea in the 17th-19th centuries. However, this is not confirmed by the testimonies of the Russian pioneers themselves. For example, Erofei Khabarov (1603-1671) in his letters reported that “this land cannot be taken over, because it is crowded and the fighting is fierce.”

In the first half of the 19th century, Okhotsk, Ayan, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Nikolaevsk-on-Amur alternately played the role of a stronghold of the Russian Empire in the Far East. However, none of these ports met the necessary requirement - to have a convenient and protected harbor, next to trade routes.

After the conclusion of the Aigun Treaty (1858), the Russians began to actively explore the Amur region, and as a result of the signing of the Tianjin (1858) and Peking (1860) treatises, the territory of today’s Primorsky Krai and Vladivostok was annexed to the Russian Empire.

In the summer of 1860, the first Russian military unit arrived in the Golden Horn Bay to establish a military post, which officially received the name of Vladivostok (“The Ruler of the East”), by analogy with the city of Vladikavkaz (“The Ruler of the Caucasus”).

More Historical Facts…

Vladivostok in the late 19th - early 20th centuries

A few years after its foundation, Vladivostok became the main port of the Russian Empire in the Far East. In 1871, the main naval base of the Siberian military flotilla, the headquarters of the military governor and other naval departments were transferred to Vladivostok from Nikolaevsk-on-Amur. According to the first census of 1878, there were 8,393 residents in Vladivostok, of whom 4,952 were Russians and 3,441 - foreigners. In 1880, Vladivostok officially received the status of a town.

In the 1890s, a demographic and economic boom took place in Vladivostok after the completion of the construction of the Ussuriysk branch of the Trans-Siberian Railway and the Chinese-Eastern Railway. According to the first census of the population of the Russian Empire of 1897, 28,993 people lived in Vladivostok. Ten years later, the city’s population tripled.

During the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905), Vladivostok was shelled from the sea by Japanese ships. However, a detachment of cruisers based in the harbor of Vladivostok remained the only combat-ready formation of the Russian fleet in the Far East until the end of the war.

The first decade of the 20th century was characterized by a prolonged crisis in the development of Vladivostok, caused by a number of reasons: change of government focus to Port Arthur (today’s Dalian in China), the Boxer Rebellion in North China (1900-1901), the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905), and finally the first Russian revolution (1905-1907).

A new stage in the development of Vladivostok began in 1907. The loss of Port Arthur again made Vladivostok the main port of the Russian Empire in the Pacific Ocean. Until 1914 (before the First World War), the city experienced rapid growth and became one of the economic centers of the Asia-Pacific region. The population of Vladivostok exceeded 100 thousand people. There were large Chinese, Korean and Japanese communities in the city.

During the First World War, Vladivostok was an important center for the import from allied and neutral countries of military-technical equipment for the Russian troops, as well as raw materials and equipment for industry.

Vladivostok from 1917 to World War II

On October 30, 1917, the sailors of the Siberian Flotilla decided to “rally around the united power of the Soviets” - power in the city passed to the Bolsheviks. However, on June 29, 1918, Czechoslovak troops (the Czechoslovak Legion) overthrew Soviet power in Vladivostok. In the fall of 1918, the troops of the United States, Japan, Italy, and Canada entered the city. Throughout 1919, the region was engulfed in a partisan war.

In order to avoid a war with Japan, at the suggestion of the Soviet leadership, the Far Eastern Soviet Republic, a nominally independent state, was proclaimed on April 6, 1920. Most of the foreign troops left Vladivostok in 1920, apart from the Japanese forces. Diplomatic pressure, as well as domestic protests and huge expenses incurred by the Siberian Expedition, forced Japan to withdraw its troops from Primorye in October 1922. In November, 1922, the Far Eastern Soviet Republic was liquidated and became part of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic.

Vladivostok was in decline, the city’s population decreased to 106 thousand people. In 1923-1925, the Soviet government adopted a restoration plan, during which the commercial port resumed operation. The Far East avoided the period of war communism, destructive for the country’s economy, and immediately found itself in the situation of the New Economic Policy, which allowed, to a certain extent, a free market.

In the 1930s-1940s, Vladivostok was used as a transit point for prisoners and cargo for “Sevvostlag” (North-Eastern Corrective Labor Camps) of “Dalstroy” (Far North Construction Trust). The Vladivostok transit camp, where prisoners were brought from all over the Soviet Union, was located in the city. The poet Osip Mandelstam died here. The following famous people passed through it: future actor Georgy Zhzhonov, writers Varlam Shalamov and Yevgenia Ginzburg, academician Sergei Korolev, and hundreds of thousands of other political prisoners.

In 1939, the population of Vladivostok was about 206,000 people. During World War II, Vladivostok was the largest Lend-Lease center, handling imported cargo almost 4 times more than Murmansk and almost 5 times more than the Arkhangelsk group of ports.

Vladivostok after World War II

On August 11, 1951, a special regime was introduced in Vladivostok - the city became closed to foreigners. During the years of the Khrushchev Thaw, Vladivostok received special attention from the state authorities. For the first time, Nikita Khrushchev visited the city in 1954. It was noted that at that time the city infrastructure was in poor condition.

In 1959, after visiting the United States, Nikita Khrushchev again visited Vladivostok. Impressed by his visit to the US, Khrushchev put forward a slogan to make Vladivostok a better city than San Francisco. The result of this visit was the active housing construction of the 1960s, known among local residents as “Big Vladivostok”. In particular, a funicular and avenue of the 100th anniversary of Vladivostok were built. In 1968, the population of Vladivostok exceeded 400 thousand people.

In 1974, the 38th President of the United States, Gerald Ford, paid an official visit to Vladivostok to meet with Leonid Brezhnev, the General Secretary of the CPSU Central Committee. At the meeting, the sides signed a protocol to the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty and the Treaty on the Limitation of Underground Nuclear Testing, which helped curb the arms race. In 1989, the population of the city was about 633 thousand people.

On September 20, 1991, Boris Yeltsin, the President of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, signed a decree on the opening of Vladivostok for visiting by foreign citizens - Vladivostok ceased to be a closed city.

The collapse of the USSR greatly influenced the city’s economy. State defense enterprises were deprived of orders, which led to an increase in unemployment. The surviving fishing enterprises mainly switched to the export of fish and seafood to Japan. In the 1990s, Vladivostok became a center for illegal fishing, timber smuggling, and the resale of Japanese cars.

Due to the decline in living standards, the birth rate fell and migration to the European regions of Russia increased. However, Vladivostok retained the status of an important transport, industrial, commercial, and financial center of the region.

At the beginning of the 21st century, there was an improvement in the social and economic situation. On November 4, 2010, Vladivostok was awarded the title “City of Military Glory”. In September 2012, the APEC summit was held on Russky Island in Vladivostok. To prepare for it, about $ 20 billion was invested in the development of the city’s infrastructure. The main construction projects were a bridge across the Golden Horn Bay and a bridge to Russky Island, a new international airport, and the Far Eastern Federal University.

December 13, 2018, Vladivostok became the administrative center of the Far Eastern Federal District.

Vladivostok - Features

Vladivostok is located on the Muravyov-Amursky Peninsula and islands in the Peter the Great Bay of the Sea of Japan. The last station of the Trans-Siberian Railway, it is one of the largest seaports in the region and the main base of the Russian Pacific Fleet. The distance from Vladivostok to Moscow by rail is 9,288 kilometers, by highway - 9,024 km. The distances to other, closer capital cities: Seoul (South Korea) - 750 km, Tokyo (Japan) - 1,060 km, Beijing (China) - 1,340 km.

“Vladivostok” literally means “The Ruler of the East”, named by analogy with the Russian city of Vladikavkaz (“The Ruler of the Caucasus”). This city is also known as “The Pacific Gate of Russia” and “The Fishing Capital of Russia”. The coat of arms of Vladivostok, which repeats the historical coat of arms adopted in 1881, depicts the Amur tiger. Vladivostok City Day is celebrated in early July.

The city has a moderate monsoon climate. The climatic conditions of Vladivostok are among the most favorable in the Russian Far East. The winter period (November-March) is characterized by frosty, dry and clear weather. The calendar summer in Vladivostok is divided into two clearly separated periods. The first half is characterized by cool and cloudy weather, with drizzling rains and fog. The second half is characterized by warm weather with prevailing southeast winds. In summer, typhoons with heavy rains are typical. The average temperature in January is minus 12.3 degrees Celsius, in August - plus 19.8 degrees Celsius.

Vladivostok is a large economic center of the Far East with a diversified economy represented by developed manufacturing industries (mechanical engineering, shipbuilding, ship repair, food production, etc.), wholesale and retail trade, services, transport, and communications.

Its cargo and passenger port is a link between the Trans-Siberian Railway and the Pacific sea routes. The main export items are fish and seafood, timber, ferrous and non-ferrous metals. The main items of import are foodstuffs, medicines, clothing, footwear, household appliances, and used cars.

Vladivostok International Airport, one of the largest in the Far East, offers regular flights to Krasnoyarsk, Irkutsk, Novosibirsk, Moscow, Khabarovsk, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, Krasnodar, and a number of other cities.

The federal highway A370 “Ussuri” connects the city with Khabarovsk. Vladivostok is the most motorized city in Russia per capita due to the availability of cheap used cars from Japan. The main type of public transport in Vladivostok are buses. There are also trolleybuses, trams, a funicular, sea boats, and ferries.

The Far Eastern Federal University and the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences make Vladivostok the largest scientific and educational center of the Russian Far East. Vladivostok is also the cultural center of Primorsky Krai. Dozens of cultural institutions are open in the city - museums, theaters, art galleries, movie theaters, and a philharmonic society.

Vladivostok is the closest city to the countries of the Asia-Pacific region with European culture, cuisine, and architectural tradition, which makes it attractive to tourists (about 500 architectural monuments and more than 100 fortifications of the Vladivostok fortress). The city center has preserved the historical ensemble of the turn of the 19th-20th centuries. Here you can see all the styles that were presented at that time - from the neoclassicism of the late 19th century and various directions of Art Nouveau, to the neoclassicism of the 1930s-1950s.

Besides cultural tourism, this city is a center of sea and recreational tourism. Tourists are also attracted to Vladivostok by the gambling zone “Primorye”. Most of the tourists come from China, the Republic of Korea, and Japan.

Main Attractions of Vladivostok

Cable-stayed bridges of Vladivostok . The idea to connect the districts of Vladivostok, separated by the Golden Horn (Zolotoy Rog) Bay and the Eastern Bosphorus Strait, appeared already in the second half of the 19th century. The First World War postponed these plans for an indefinite future. Then the Second World War prevented them. Finally, the decision to construct these cable-stayed bridges was made in the 2000s. Both bridges were built in 2012 - for the APEC summit in Vladivostok.

The Golden Bridge (across the Golden Horn Bay) is located in the very center of Vladivostok. It connects the city with remote districts and the federal highway. It has sidewalks for pedestrians, so here you can enjoy the beautiful views of the bay and the city. The length of the bridge is about 1,400 meters.

The Russky (Russian) Bridge (3,100 meters) connects the Nazimov Peninsula and the Novosilsky Cape on Russky (Russian) Island. The most beautiful views of this bridge can be seen from Orlinoye Gnezdo (Eagle’s Nest) hill, especially in the evening. This bridge is depicted on a 2,000 ruble note.

Tours along the cable-stayed bridges of Vladivostok is a popular entertainment for tourists, walks on both bridges are often included in sightseeing tours of the city. Groups usually leave from the center of Vladivostok to Russky Island, the duration of excursions is from 3 to 6 hours. The structure is an elegant brick and stone arch made in the Russian-Byzantine style. In the upper part there is an image of the patron saint of sailors, Nicholas the Wonderworker. The original arch was blown up as a symbol of tsarism in 1930. In 2003, the Triumphal Arch was rebuilt. Peter the Great Street, 6.

Cathedral of the Intercession of the Mother of God - the main Orthodox church in Vladivostok built in 1902 and destroyed in 1935. In Soviet times, a park was located in its place. A complete copy of the cathedral was erected on the old foundation in 2007. Okeanskiy Avenue, 44.
