The Sailing Skiff that Fits in a Locker
Tiwal 3 adds a new twist to blow-up boat fun..
Sailing a cruising boat is many things-rewarding, sometimes adventurous, and often relaxing-but seldom viscerally fun, not in the way that a beach cat or performance dinghy saturates the senses and puts you in touch with the wind and waves. It doesn’t communicate every ripple and puff, it doesn’t thrill, and it doesn’t allow you to push the edge. It’s the difference between driving a Winnebago and riding a bicycle. For many of us, our love of sailing began with something fast and volatile, and by-and-by, we miss it dearly. And yet as much as wed like to strap a Laser or Hobie to the foredeck, thats not happening.
The Tiwal 3 is an unconventional answer. The skiff-like hull is constructed using high pressure drop-stitch construction (PVC), like inflatable stand-up paddle boards and the Walker Bay Airis Play kayak ( Kayaks for Cruising Sailboats , PS October 2017). This creates a very light and stiff hull to which a frame integrating mast support, moderate hiking racks, running rigging, dagger board, and rudder are attached using numerous double Velcro wraps. The result is surprisingly rigid, giving no hint that it is an inflatable, other than being easier on the knees when tacking. Assembly, from a pair of bags to the water, takes about 20 minutes.
At just 100 pounds, it is easily launched from the foredeck like a typical tender. The carbon fiber mast (five sections) is paired with a square top, fully battened mainsail, which is easily adjusted from full and powerful to flat and twisted, according to downhaul tension and the wind. Two sail sizes are available, 54 and 75 square feet, and the larger sail can be reefed to 54 square feet using a novel Fastex buckle arrangement (you must return to the beach to reef).
Sailing is reminiscent of a Sunfish, but with a full-batten sail and better hardware. Its not as zippy as a Laser, but its not as tippy either, and you can’t really carry a Laser on deck. Our test sail was in light winds, weaving through a harbor crowded with anchored yachts and traffic.
The high-aspect daggerboard (2 3) and rudder allowed it to point high even in our unpracticed hands, as long as we didn’t over sheet or pinch. Tacking was fast and reliable, and we never banged a knee on the deck.
The sail hangs low over the deck, but the carbon boom is sheathed in the sail and too light to pose a serious of hazard. The tiller and sheeting arrangements are smooth and precise; the driver will feel confident throwing the boat around when in a breeze. We watched video of the boat planning, and it felt well balanced to do so.
Although we have not done long- term testing, we talked to a few owners and closely examined the boat, on shore and in the water. It is simple, well made, and should hold up like any similar inflatable tender, which is to say pretty well, so long as you avoid dragging it over rocks.
Conclusions
We see this novel design in much the same way we see high-pressure inflatable kayaks; we like fiberglass a little bit better on the water, but these are real boats and the performance is quite impressive for something that fits in a pair of bags.
Too many times we’ve e felt frustrated at anchor, watching dinghies dance across the harbor while Im stuck with a boring tender and a big boat that isn’t made for afternoon play. If a zipping around the harbor in a responsive dinghy, like the Tiwal, doesn’t make you smile, you might want to rethink your choice of recreational fun.
The Tiwal has a very light and stiff hull to which a frame integrating mast support, moderate hiking racks, running rigging, dagger board, and rudder are attached using numerous double Velcro wraps. The result is surprisingly rigid inflatable.
- Double-wrap hook-and-loop straps secure the hiking racks/frame.
- The mast support is integrated into the frame and hiking wracks. This simplifies assembly and adds stiffness to the rig.
- The boat was stable enough to step onto right from the dock.

Tiwal 3: The Airline-Checkable Sailboat in a Suitcase
Ready for travel, this tough inflatable sailing dinghy stows in two tidy duffel bags. popeye sailor’s cap not included..

The world is full of places that are perfect for sailing but far from a yacht marina. Consider the thousands of perfect mountain lakes, desert islands, and outsized hotel swimming pools. If you can get a kayak on your Outback, you might enjoy a respectable float, but you won’t be sailing . For that, you need your own personal Pequod , a pocket-yacht . . . a Tiwal .
The Tiwal 3 is an inflatable and fully functional sailboat , able to carry two adults for open-water adventures. More impressively, two adults are able to carry the Tiwal 3, since it breaks down into two bags of just under five feet long and 16 by 14 inches square. They won’t fit into the overhead bin on your next flight to Palau, and they weigh 62 pounds apiece, so checking them as luggage will be a fairly spendy proposition, but it beats trailering a Hobie Cat.
They’re hardly carry-ons, but the Tiwal 3’s two 62-pound duffels are surprisingly manageable.
Setting up is (befittingly) a breeze. From bag to bay is a 20-minute process: Just unroll, partially inflate with an electric pump (if there’s power nearby, otherwise with a hand pump), assemble the frame and Velcro it on, and attach the mast. To make everything shipshape (a wide, high-performance V-shape, more particularly), simply give it a bit more pressure with a hand pump. Once afloat, it handles as well as any 11-footer. There are slightly more than 800 Tiwal inflatables plying the world’s waters at the moment, and they’ve become a favorite of weekend adventurers, families (it’s a safe and easy learning setup), and people who live on big boats and think they need additional smaller boats.
For sailors dedicated to testing new waters, it’s become indispensable, and it’s relatively affordable, with prices starting at $5,200. A Popeye sailor’s cap , because you’re going to need one, will add about 17 bucks.

Tiwal 3: For Those Addicted to Sailing
I think we all agree that sailing is a great pleasure . Some of us do it professionally, some do it for love, some just like it but some of us are real addicts. This time, I am not dividing people into categories, I just want to help those who can’t live without sailing.
Tiwal 3 is the smallest sailing dinghy I have ever seen. This vessel comes in a kit, which means that you can put it together and start sailing after only 20 minutes! It takes a little less to disassemble it but I think you can do it even faster through the course of time.
The hull of this toy is made of robust PVC rubber and constructed as two inflatable chambers while its frame, rudder, mast and boom are made of ultra light durable materials . The mainsail (the only sail) surface is 7 m², while total weight (without the crew) is not more than 50 kg.
The transport kit comes as two bags with dimensions of 145 cm X 40 cm X 35 cm, which means that it suits the trunk of your car. It also doesn’t take too much space if you own a motor yacht and want to sail during the breaks of your cruise. This inflatable sailing dinghy is designed for one adult person but I believe it could be safe enough for one adult and two smaller kids since its transport capacity is up to 200 kg.
I can imagine Tiwal 3 as an additional leisure equipment aboard big motor yachts, for enthusiasts traveling around in campers, for sailing lovers living close to a lake and for all who don’t have enough followers to rent a sailing yacht for sailing holidays but can’t live without sailing . Although the price of Tiwal 3 is about EUR 5.490, this sailing dinghy can provide a lot of fun to you and your youngsters for more than just one summer.
I wish you a calm sea, a fair wind and a strong mast!

Speed in The Bag With Tiwal 3R
- By Dave Reed
- August 23, 2022
“What’s in the bag?” you might ask entrepreneur and industrial designer Marion Excoffon as she opens the trunk of her car, revealing her cargo of two large duffle bags. To which she would respond with her sharp French accent: “That is the Tiwal 3R…grab a bag…let’s go sailing.” And then roughly 30 minutes later, the cleverly designed inflatable sailing dinghy will be pressurized, rigged and put to sea for a fast and splashy sail. It’s this ease and sailing experience from start to finish that’s fueling an international Tiwal sailing boom. And yes, they’re now racing them, too.
The Tiwal 3R, the following act to the Tiwal 2, recipient of Sailing World’s 2020 Boat of the Year (Best Dinghy) takes Excoffon’s and Tiwal’s innovation to the next level of performance as a “supercharged inflatable sport dinghy” aimed at the recreational racing market.
“It took over two years to develop this boat,” Excoffon says. “The timescale can be explained by the enthusiasm of the testers, which made us more and more ambitious. But the constraints and forces induced by the power of the new rig have obliged us to modify the structure and hull quite significantly, as well as the blades.”
The Tiwal 3R’s inflatable hull gets its rigidity from the advanced PVC laminate and construction (similar to inflatable SUPs) and its aluminum exoskeleton that can be assembled d easily by one person. With all that air and the composite daggerboard and rudder blades, the boat weighs in at 121 pounds. The stated maximum load (i.e., combined crew weight) is 440 pounds, so with plenty of room on the flat and flared hull (and the the hiking racks), it can easily accommodate two crew. Think family racing here.
North Sails developed the rig and sail combo to deliver a responsive and properly designed 77-square-foot laminate mainsail. The sectional mast and boom tubes are carbon composite, contributing to the sail’s gust efficiency and overall light weight of the rig package. Sail controls are split to each side of the boat, allowing the keen racer to make adjustments on the fly and get every ounce of speed from the boat straight from the hiking rack. And while on the subject of speed: during our Boat of the Year tests in 2019, the recreationally de-tuned Tiwal 2 was a buoyant planing machine in 25 knots, so we expect the expect the same of the 3R—and then some—when testing gets underway in Annapolis in October.

The Secrets of Tiwal 3R, The Sporty Version Of The Inflatable Sailing Dinghy
The Tiwal 3R has been unveiled in preview at Germany’s Boot Düsseldorf from January 23rd to 31st 2021. This sport version, the Tiwal 3R, completes the range of Tiwal 3 and Tiwal 2 inflatable dinghies from the Brittany-based shipyard.
The Tiwal 3R offers a compact alternative to traditional sports dinghies, having increased rigidity both on the hull, and the mast and appendages. But it also benefits from an increase in power with a new mainsail in laminated sailcloth and is equipped with a boom.
“ For the Tiwal 3R, we’ve brought more rigidity to the whole boat, ” explains Marion Excoffon, designer and co-founder of Tiwal. “ The hull benefits from a new technology – ‘fusion’ – as well as a better flow of water at the back of the hull. The mast is made of 90% carbon and the appendages are made in composite. The result is striking, with a behavior similar to that of a rigid boat, while keeping its compact functionality for being transported. ”
Tiwal 3R, great sensations
The 7.6m² “light wind” rig guarantees great sensations in light airs (6 to 12 knots), as does the 6m² sport sail for stronger winds. “ The sail was designed with the resources and experience of North Sails . Its shape is inspired by what is being done for foiling boats, ” explains Gaëtan Aunnette, Sail Expert at North Sails.
Even the larger-size helmsman will be hiking-out in light airs for a great feeling of speed. The oriented sail cut, the new carbon boom and fine-tuning allow sail power to be optimized according to wind conditions, sea state and your weight.
The main controls are directly within reach when under way. The lines for the downhaul, cunningham and clew outhaul return to starboard and port to adjust the sail at any time and extend your glide through the water. Braided ropes with a Dyneema® core allow for ultra-precise adjustment as required. And because the boat is lightweight, any adjustments you make will be felt immediately.
The vang also has a traveler that fits the boat’s structure and allows the sail to be eased out wide downwind. The mainsheet runs through a stand-up block with a jammer for greater comfort. In the sail, a large monofilm window offers you a good field of vision for keeping a watch over your immediate environment on the water.
The extended wings on the back allow the sailor to position themselves optimally according to the wind strength and the boat’s heading. The dinghy gains in stability and performance, notably as when the wind increases.
Tiwal 3R, the take-anywhere sport boat
The Tiwal 3R is the take-anywhere sport boat. It’s super compact. It packs away into one bag for the frame, one bag for the hull, and a third bag for the sail. The sail can even be folded in half so it fits in a bag the same length as the boat bags. Whether you’re sailing for pleasure or competition, your dinghy will accompany you to all waters, everywhere. It’s a new way for you to enjoy the pleasures of sailing.

Best portable sailing dinghies for under £5k
- Katy Stickland
- July 29, 2020
We put six portable sailing dinghies under £5,000 to the test to see which one is the best all-rounder and really deserves a place on your boat
Six inflatable sailing dinghies were tested by the team
The metal frame holds the mast and daggerboard and provides rigidity
This was by a good distance the favoured inflatable sailing dinghy of all those on test.
The second iteration of this inflatable sailing dinghy is smaller and faster to assemble than the Tiwal 3 but has retained much of the sailability of the larger model.
Of all those we tested, the Tiwal 2 falls mostly into the toy category rather than being an out-and-out tender.
As such she has no cockpit, with the main inflating hull being something closer to a paddleboard.
A metal tripod holds both daggerboard and mast in position offering a solid frame from which much of the performance of the boat is derived.
This boat also required the highest pressure when inflating.
Though it would be possible to inflate it with the included hand pump – variations of which come as standard with all the inflatables on test – ideally you would want an electric pump to achieve that pressure without either exhausting yourself before you have hit the water or significantly increasing the time it takes to put her together.
With this particular model, setup speed is something of a unique selling point.
The rig is made of a three-piece glassfibre mast that simply slots together like a windsurfing mast.
The Dacron sail features vertical battens making it easy to roll around the mast when not sailing and a two-piece ‘boom’, similar in design to a thick sail batten, slots into a sock at the base of the sail.
Tiwal 2 specifications – Best on test for sailing fun
Price: £4,350 Length: 2.8m Beam: 1.9m Total weight: 49kg Biggest bag dimensions: 148cm x 40cm x 35cm Assembly time: 13 min Website: www.tiwal.com/en
Tiwal 2 set-up
The Tiwal 2 was the fastest boat to assemble in our test from packed to ready-to-sail.
In total she took 13 minutes to put together.
Much of this speed came from her simplicity – so even after owning her for a while this time would only come down a fraction.
It must also be noted the final few minutes of building time were largely waiting for the electric pump to finish getting her to the required pressure.
The size of the bags the dinghies are stowed in were measured as part of the test
This will always be a limiting factor in terms of time to the water.
There is little to report on in terms of difficulty or confusion.
She was the easiest boat to assemble.
As with the other inflatables we tested she comes in two bags, one containing the main inflatable hull and the other for rig, sails, daggerboard and rudder etc.
The Tiwal 2 was the second lightest of the boats on test, weighing in at 30kg for the main boat bag and 19kg for the rig bag.
As with everything on test the larger bag is quite cumbersome and would be difficult to carry any distance.
Tiwal 2 test
The Tiwal 2 genuinely feels for all the word like a small performance dinghy.
This inspired confidence to throw her around.
She did, however feel possible to capsize, whereas the other sailing dinghies on test felt much more stable.
The sail felt a little small in light winds, but still packed some power
The sail works effectively but was a little short on power in the relatively light conditions on test day.
I suspect with a bigger sail or a bit more breeze a modest-sized crew could easily get her onto the plane.
This would be impressive for an inflatable boat that is small enough to throw into an onboard locker.
Under motor
The boat as tested had no option to attached an outboard making her something of a one-trick pony.
However, the manufacturer has recently developed an engine mount.
This can replace the rudder stocker and is compatible with all models.
Swapping the two over would be a fairly simple process.
Although we found it was much easier to attach the rudder stock when the main hull was partially deflated.
As such, we feel it’s more likely you will decide before use whether you would be using her with a motor or with a sail.
Without a cockpit of any real description, the Tiwal 2 is never going to make a particularly practical tender, although she could carry two adults and a bag or two.
Things on deck are likely to get a bit wet.
Provided you accept this and store your shoreside kit in a dry bag, using her as a tender would be possible.
There are no rowlocks so rowing is not an option.
But, without the rig in, you could probably treat her like a standup paddleboard, but she is too large to do this effectively.
If you want a simple, quick and easy sailing toy that can double as a makeshift tender, this is the one for you.
Realistically, this seems rather more a boat you might store on board and let the kids race around in while you are at anchor.
She certainly sails better than the other options on test and doesn’t pretend to offer much else.

Supercharged Features
The design of the Tiwal 3R is the result of intense collaboration between the Tiwal R&D team and our suppliers and super testers. The design choices make the Tiwal 3R a powerful and sporty boat, yet one that remains technically and physically accessible. The Tiwal 3R’s aluminum exoskeleton is specially designed and reinforced to withstand the high forces transmitted by the rig to the hull, even in strong conditions. The structure also allows the sailor’s weight to be shifted aft to increase the power of the boat as the wind picks up. As always in the spirit of our range, the challenge was obviously to offer a boat that can be assembled and disassembled quickly. The dinghy’s form and style are simple and sleek. The Tiwal 3R offers an unprecedented combination of supercharged fun and unmatched practicality for this type of boat.
High-tech design
The inflatable hull is constructed using fusion technology for rigidity close to that of a fiberglass hull but with the added advantage of lightness. This technology favors the use of structural assembly of the various layers of materials. The inflatable parts are welded together, meaning excellent durability over time and finally the hull is equipped with a right-angled rail on the aft section that ensures a good flow through the water and an overall optimal performance. The sail has been designed by our partners North Sails, specifically for the Tiwal 3R. Its tri-radial cut makes it a very efficient sail that allows for a great deal of finesse in trimming. It is made of Xi V2 laminated sailcloth, coming from competition sails. This is a soft, strong and lightweight material, offering excellent resistance to elongation. Its matte black color provides a non-reflective surface that makes it easier to quickly read the shape of the sail. It also has strong battens which are adjustable to adapt the power according to the wind conditions and to create a better airflow. The result is a very stiff sail with excellent shape retention. The rig is equipped with a 90% carbon mast and boom. This contributes to the dynamism of the boat.
The daggerboard and rudder are made in light composite material which contribute to the overall rigidity of the boat alongsidethe rig. The rudder is an extended version to support the power of the rig.
