Stewartby to play host to Powerboat British Championship finale this weekend

Green Lane in Stewartby will be the location for six new British Powerboat champions to be crowned this weekend as the culmination of British Championships comes to Bedford.

The third and final round sees all six championships on the line, including a chance for Kempston’s Nigel Edwards who is competing in the T850 class with a gap of just ten points to close.

Edwards sits behind Bill Owen and and Mark Williams, who exchanged victories in the first two rounds but with twenty points up for grabs in the competition finale, Edwards could still take away gold.

Each of the competitors will fight it out during qualifying in a bid to secure pole position for the first of four heats. Subsequent pole position will be decided by the heat finishing positions.

Each class will then compete in four heats with all points to count towards determining the Stewartby Grand Prix Winners and each class will then be awarded championship points based on the weekend’s standings.

Jelf Racing lead the way

One of powerboat racing’s most successful teams, Jelf Racing, are leading the way with Championship chances in three of the six classes.

With Nigel Edwards part of the Jelf Racing setup, there are also chances for George Elmore, who leads the GT30 class and Ian Blacker who currently leads the F2 standings.

The Jelf family have had a strong presence in the world of powerboat racing, with Father and Son both competing in the British Championships in the last fifteen years.

In 2008, Colin Jelf made history by becoming the first driver to win the UIM F2 World Championship 3 times in a row.

In 2011, Ben Jelf followed in his father’s footsteps to become the first ever UIM GT15 European Champion, and the youngest British Powerboat driver to ever win a World Championship when he secured the GT15 World Championship.

17-year-old George Elmore has followed in his uncle, cousin and sister’s footsteps before him and is the youngest member of the team competing in the GT30 class.

George like his family before him boasts his own silver in the form of the British GT30 Championship crown and formally GT15 Championship.

With the event taking place across the weekend of 16th and 17th September, this is a unique opportunity to find out all about a sport that doesn’t come to town very often, with entry free for all.

RYA Powerboat Level 1 Start Powerboating - £150pp

The 1-day RYA Powerboat Level 1 Course provides an introduction to powerboating, techniques for launching and recovery, everyday boat handling and the use of safety equipment.

This is a great course as a powerboat taster or if you are not sure if you would like to commit to a powerboat level 2 course (though this is NOT a requirement before taking Powerboat level 2). It is also a perfect course for those that crew on a powerboat or for children.

Pre-Requisites:

Previous Experience: None

Minimum Age: 8 years: where a candidate is U16 they must attend a course with a parent or guardian (those aged between 8-11 years will receive an endorsed certificate).

Student Ratio: Maximum 3 students per instructor / boat

RYA Powerboat Level 1 Course Syllabus:

• Launching & Recovery
• Preparation of boat and crew
• Boat handling at low speed
• Picking up and securing to a mooring buoy
• Leaving and coming alongside
• Being towed
• IRPCS (rules of the road)
• Man Overboard Recovery

RYA Powerboat Level 2 Boat Handling - £200pp

The 2-day RYA Powerboat Level 2 Course is the perfect course for you whether you have no previous experience or have been powerboating for a while and want to brush up your skills. An added bonus is if you want the option to hire or use a powerboat whilst you're on holiday in Europe you can also gain the International Certificate of Competence (I.C.C.) . If you're looking at using this certificate for work, then you can also move towards gaining the RYA Powerboat Level 2 Commercial Endorsement.

Minimum Age: 12 years: where a student is U16 they must attend a course with a parent or guardian (those aged between 12-16 years will receive an endorsed certificate).

RYA Powerboat Level 2 Course Syllabus:

• Launching & recovery
• Boat handling at low & higher speed
• Securing to a buoy
• Man overboard recovery techniques
• Leaving & coming alongside (marina handling)
• Turning in a confined space
• Basic Navigation & passage planning
• Weather & Tides

What is prw.

It’s a powerboat racing website that has covered circuit racing, offshore racing and PWC since 2016. Maintained by The Race Factory based in Norway who have specialists in event planning and promotion, social media, graphic design, and photography. We are currently working on our vision and believe that we can and will make a different in powerboating. We will dedicate our time to produce accurate factual stories and to promote the sport to a wider global audience.

Stewartby Powerboat & Hydroplane Racing Club are organising and hosting the 2021 CPA British Sprint Championships this weekend.

The event has five classes racing; F2, F4, OSY400, GT30 and GT15 with qualifying and 2 heats held today, with a further two more tomorrow.
