Ukraine targets moscow in one of largest-ever drone attacks on russian capital as war intensifies.

Ukraine targeted Moscow with at least 11 drones on Wednesday, one of the biggest such attacks on the Russian capital since the war began.

Russia’s Ministry of Defense said it shot down a total of 45 drones over the country on Wednesday, with 11 intercepted over the Moscow region, 23 over Bryansk, six in Belgorod, three in Kaluga and two in Kursk.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said some of the drones were destroyed over the city Podlsk, just 24 miles south of the Kremlin headquarters.

Ukraine attacked Moscow on Wednesday with at least 11 drones shot down by air defenses in what Russian officials said was one of the biggest drone strikes on the capital since the war in Ukraine began.

“This is one of the largest attempts to attack Moscow using drones ever,” Sobyanin said on Telegram.

“The layered defense of Moscow that was created made it possible to successfully repel all the attacks from the enemy UAVs.”

Russian outlets aired unverified footage of several drones soaring overhead above Moscow before they were shot down by the Kremlin’s air defense system.

Officials in the regions where the drones were spotted said no deaths or serious damage had been reported as a result of the drone strike.

Main sites of the Ukrainian counteroffensive

  • Melitopol:  Kyiv’s forces continued advancing toward the city of Melitopol on the Sea of Azov in the south. If Ukraine were to claw back Melitopol, it could bring it closer to breaking through the Russia-held land corridor linking the annexed Crimean Peninsula to mainland Russia, splitting Moscow’s forces in two and cutting their supply lines.
  • Zaporizhzhia:  Intense battles raged in the southeastern Zaporizhzhia region, where US officials said Kyiv has launched its “main thrust” aimed at retaking 20% of its occupied territory. While Moscow claimed to have repelled Ukraine’s attacks involving dozens of armored vehicles and inflicted heavy losses on Kyiv’s troops, the Institute for the Study of War reported that the Ukrainian offensive appeared to have broken through some Russian defenses.
  • Donetsk:  Ukrainian troops on Thursday recaptured the strategically significant village of Staromaiorske located in the Donetsk region south of a cluster of settlements along the Mokri Yaly river that Kyiv had seized at the start of the counteroffensive. Control of the village could open the way for Ukraine to push southward toward the coast.
  • Bakhmut:  Ukrainian forces were said to be “gradually moving forward” near Bakhmut in the east, where Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Malyar claimed Russians were dying at a rate eight times higher than Ukrainians. Geolocated footage showed that Kyiv’s troops have made gains south of the town of Klishchiivka, and additional fighting was reported near the settlements of Kudriumivka and Andriivka.

The attack was reminiscent of the May 2023 assault where eight drones were shot over Moscow in what Russian President Vladimir Putin slammed as Kyiv’s attempt to scare and provoke the Kremlin.

Since the start of the year, Ukraine has stepped up its drone warfare against Russia, attacking oil refineries and airfields to slow the enemy invasion.

A reported Ukrainian UJ-22 kamikaze drone is shot down by Russian air defenses.

The latest drone strikes come 15 days into Ukraine’s ground incursion in Kursk, where Kyiv has seized dozens of Russian towns and hundreds of square-miles of land past the border.

Russia’s state media claims 31 people have died since the incursion began on Aug. 6, with official figures yet to be independently verified.

With more than 120,000 civilians fleeing neighboring towns, Russian officials have condemned the Ukrainian incursion and said “any possibility” for peace has passed.

Who will negotiate with them after this, after the atrocities, the terror that they are committing against peaceful residents, the civilian population, civilian infrastructure and peaceful facilities,” said Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry.

Kyiv has said it’s looking to establish a “buffer zone” in Russia after Ukraine took out three bridges in the region, hindering Moscow’s supply lines and redeployment efforts to fight off the invading soldiers.

Russia says Ukrainian drones attacked Moscow

Russia said it repelled a drone attack against Moscow yesterday, as Ukraine presses on with its offensive in Russia’s southern Kursk region. The Russian authorities did not report any damage or casualties, saying 10 Ukrainian attack drones were destroyed by the capital’s air defenses.

A Washington-based think tank said Ukraine was making marginal advances within Russia. Footage showed that Ukrainian troops had entered the outskirts of Korenevo, a town of about 5,000 people, and pushed into two more villages. Russian forces are trying to install pontoons to cross a section of the Seym River after Ukraine destroyed several bridges.

President Vladimir Putin has promised a decisive response to Ukraine’s incursion, but so far there has been more focus on containment than retaliation. Russian forces have slowed Ukraine’s advance and hardened the front line, setting up the next phase of a battle with high stakes for both sides. Instead of weakening the Kremlin, the invasion may eventually cause more Russian citizens to rally around the flag , some analysts said.

Context: Drone assaults away from the front lines have become a feature of the Russia-Ukraine war. Ukraine also said it had intercepted 50 Russian drones over its territory overnight.

Israel and Hezbollah trade strikes with talks stalled

The Israeli military and Hezbollah traded cross-border strikes yesterday, as months of diplomatic efforts have failed to ease hostilities.

Israel said that it had struck weapon-storage facilities used by Hezbollah. The strikes killed at least one person and injured 30 others, Lebanon’s Health Ministry said. Hezbollah said it had responded by targeting an Israeli base in the Golan Heights, which Israel said had caused at least one injury.

Diplomatic efforts to bring an end to the war in Gaza are at a standstill, despite hopes from the U.S. that a new proposal could break the deadlock. In broad terms, the U.S. proposal appears to conform to demands by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that Israeli troops continue to patrol part of Gaza along the border with Egypt. Here’s what we know about the proposed deal .

An Israeli strike on a school turned shelter in Gaza City killed at least two people, according to Gazan emergency services. Here are other key developments in the war .

🇺🇸 U.S. ELECTION 2024

The presidential election is less than 80 days away. This is what we’re watching.

Changing the message on Trump

Kamala Harris and her allies are crafting a new approach to Donald Trump. Democrats have portrayed him as a dangerous villain, a racist and a threat to democracy. Now, they’re trying something else — deflating him.

Harris and her allies have argued at the Democratic National Convention that Trump is a meanspirited fraud who is playing a long con on the American people. They are depicting him as a fake working man’s populist and an anti-union “scab.”

The strategy is designed not just to earn applause but to win votes, eroding Trump’s support among the undecided and mostly white middle-class voters in three states that are likely to decide the election: Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin.

On Day 3 of the convention, taking place on Wednesday night in the U.S., the jovial, blunt-spoken Tim Walz, Harris’s running mate, will speak to the largest audience of his political career, as he formally accepts the nomination for vice president. Bill Clinton is also expected to take the stage.

Here’s what else to know:

Trump and his running mate, Senator JD Vance of Ohio, are in North Carolina for Trump’s first outdoor rally since an assassination attempt. He will be shielded by bulletproof glass .

The ascension of Harris has unleashed a gusher of political donations to Democrats .

Michelle Obama’s militaristic sleeveless outfit suggests this election will be a fight , our fashion critic writes.

Four years ago Su Min left home, an abusive marriage and started a solo road trip across China. Since then, she’s become an internet sensation and an accidental icon of women’s awakening across the country.

But she never filed for divorce — until a month ago. Her husband refused at first, and a legal fight loomed. Judges in China often deny petitions or force couples into mediation that disadvantages women, studies show, and domestic violence claims are often ignored. Her husband gave in only after she agreed to pay him more than $22,000 .

“It’s all I have — how could I not be upset?” Su, 60, said in an interview. Still, she said, “even though money is very important, freedom is more important.”

Revisiting the One Ton Cup era

Published on November 27th, 2013 by Editor -->

Back in the day, when grand prix handicap racing was going bonkers, the One Ton Cup was among the holy grails in the sport. Reputations were made at the One Ton Cup.

The One Ton Cup was first created in the early 1900s for the 6 meter class, but it became an ocean racing championship in 1965 when the RORC, and then later IOR, handicap rules gained traction. A “one tonner” was a specific handicap rating number, thus providing designers the target to create the fastest boat.

And they would all gather each year to race for the Cup.

Now, with the Cup long since fought over, 2-time One Ton Cup champion Chris Bouzaid (1969 and 1972) and the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron are seeking an indication of potential interest in a proposed “One Ton Cup Revisited” regatta, in Auckland, New Zealand, in February/March 2015.

one tonner yacht

The regatta would celebrate the (near) 50 th anniversary of the One Ton Cup switching from metre class yachts to offshore racers, using an international rule (RORC) to measure and rate contestants. This was when interest in the Cup went global and led to One Tonners being regarded as the Formula One class of ocean racing.

The current thinking is to cater for RORC and IOR One Tonners that were eligible for Cup competition between (and including) the years 1965 to 1983. The Cup increased the boat size in 1984.

The IRC Rating Rule would be used to equitably handicap the fleet which would be raced in two classes – RORC and IOR yachts 1965 to 1971 (inclusive), and IOR yachts 1971 to 1983 (inclusive).

The RNZYS has had a long involvement in the modern era of the event, competing for the Cup no less than 12 times, in seven different countries. In the process, it has won the Cup on five occasions and hosted the event twice.

The current proposal for the “Revisited” regatta would be to mirror the One Ton Cup of old – such that there would be three inshore races, a short ocean race and a proper ocean race. In deference to contestants and boats, however, the inshore races would be of approximately 20 miles length, while the short ocean race would be a 40-miler (approx) and the ocean race a 100-miler (approx).

There would be a Prix d’ Elegance and other innovative awards, with an opening ceremony and  prizegiving that would do full justice to New Zealand’s legendary record for celebrating major sailing occasions.

There would also be a New Zealand Millennium Cup super yacht and One Ton Cup Revisited weekend at the beautiful Hauraki Gulf island of Kawau, with its famous Mansion House which, in the mid-to-late 1800s, was the residence of the then Governor of New Zealand, Sir George Grey.

This will be a high-profile sailing period in Auckland.

The Finn Gold Cup will be raced off Takapuna Beach in February 2015, while the Volvo Ocean Race fleet is scheduled to arrive in Auckland (from China) on or about around 26 February 2015, and leave for Itajai, in Brazil, on 15 March 2015.

The proposed “One Ton Cup Revisited” would be an important and integral part of this major celebration of sail.

Those interested should communicate, by email that interest, with brief detail of the One Tonner that might/would be involved: Alan Sefton, [email protected]

BROKER'S COMMENTS

GOLONDRINA’s beautiful simplicity perhaps belies her superb provenance as an offshore racing thoroughbred and Mediterranean champion from a period over 50 years ago when, as OJALÀ, she and her Sparkman & Stephens cousins were blazing a trail internationally, demonstrating the viability of separating rudder from keel. In direct descent from the UK “Terrible Twins” ROUNDABOUT and CLARIONET, Chris Bouzaid’s RAINBOW II from New Zealand (One Ton Cup winner 1969, and runner up 1968), the Swan 36, and hull design sister of 1972 Mediterranean One Ton champion VOLONTÉ, OLAJÀ was Mediterranean One Ton champion in 1970 and 1971, and won her class in the 1971 Giraglia. As GOLONDRINA she has been with the same family since 1972 as a cherished cruiser, and since the early 1990s a regular entrant and winner at Vele d'Epoca di Imperia. The timing couldn’t be better with a new division being promoted by CIM in the Mediterranean for vintage RORC and IOR Rule yachts - in particular One Tonners. GOLONDRINA is priced at a realistic level because she is now in need of an extensive refit.

Sparkman & Stephens Design No. 1922 “When asked by his friends if he was going to fulfill his dream of owning a sailboat, Charles Holland always answered ‘hopefully’. These friends were Argentinian so that came out as ‘ojalà’. The dream was fulfilled…” Livorno Daily Photo blog, 2013 Her commissioning owner was 50-year-old Charles Holland, the Milan based Englishman brought up in Argentina who founded and built the success of what has become the world’s largest hearing aid manufacturer, Amplifon. Holland had settled in Italy after the Second World War, having served there with the British Special Operations Executive (think James Bond) and the Canadian ‘Devil’s Brigade’. Much of this activity was so secret, and Holland so modest, that many close to him didn’t realise until the UK archives were de-classified in 2006 – five years after Holland’s death. The builder, Carlini, was a Sparkman & Stephens Mediterranean favourite; under the supervision of Rod Stephens the build quality was second to none. OJALÀ was twice One Ton Champion of the Mediterranean, in 1970 and 1971. In 1971 she also participated in the Fastnet Race, and back in home waters was 1st in that year’s Giraglia. But racing yacht design, at least to achieve a competitive rating, was moving apace late 60s/ early 70s. With an eye on the 1973 One Ton Cup at Porto Cervo, Sardinia, Holland commissioned the aluminium hulled IOR One Tonner OJALÀ II from Sparkman & Stephens which his family still owns. OJALÀ (I) transferred to present ownership as GOLONDRINA in 1972; remarkably she has subsequently only sold again within the family of her second owner. ©2024 Iain McAllister/ Sandeman Yacht Company Ltd. GOLONDRINA returned to racing in the early 1990s with the rise of Classic regattas. Great history here! My father bought "Hann" in the late 1970's and owned her until 2004. When we purchased her she was named "WIndquest" and we obviously never changed it. She was a great boat and we raced her extensively in local races in the Newport, RI USA area; with decent success I might add. We sold her around 2004 due to failing health of my Father to a gentleman from Florida USA. My father was always curious about the boats history but knew nothing other than hearsay. I wish he was still around to tell him his boat was actually raced for the cup he'd be tickled!

From one son to another... My Dad was navigating for Hood in the 1973 race. Yea Dad. But for the next 20yrs he kept wanted to buy the thing...lol. Never fall in love with a boat...lol

*Thats buying 'Robin' ... But Ted wasnt selling I dont think is the way it went...lol. -the boat we did have (aurora 40) was a fat pig. I saw pictures of her in a yard 4yrs ago. Tragic.

AMERICA'S CUP

This design was in response to a late program starting in January by Irvine Laidlaw of Singapore to build a new design 1 tonner for the 1985 Singapore Admiral's Cup team and later for competition in the Southern Cross Cup in Australia. This is the first IOR design we have done since the actual 1985 rule changes were announced in November, thus it reflects our interpretations of this year's rule, and is a development of the design theme for our two very successful 43 footers "SNAKE OIL" (Class C winner SORC) and "DRAKE'S PRAYER" (top boat Australian Admiral's Cup trials).

In general terms the approach was to develop a design that would have good all round performance with more emphasis on light airs performance than our previous designs. Our goal was to equal or better the speed of all our previous 1 ton designs in all conditions, that is to equal the extreme performance of our Southern Hemisphere 40's such as  "EXADOR", "PACIFIC SUNDANCE" in moderate fresh conditions and at the same time better the performance of our smaller designs eg. "SIRIUS" (third in 1984 1 Ton Worlds), "EPIC LASS" (New Zealand Admiral's Cup team), "CARRO CHEFE" and "SAGA" (Brazilian Admiral's Cup team) in lighter conditions.

To achieve this goal the boat has a little more sail area and displacement than any of these existing designs, is almost as long as the lengthy Southern Hemisphere boats, but significantly narrower at beam waterline.

The narrower beam waterline is in response to the changed CGF formula which allows an increase in stability over last year's designs whilst at the same time obtaining a substantial decrease in wetted surface area.

Stern sections are modeled very much on those developed for "SNAKE OIL" and "DRAKE'S PRAYER" being of only moderate beam but very fair through the aft measurement stations allowing higher top speeds to be reached.

With an SHR of 15.8 some may not consider this to be a fast light weather boat. However, due to the very narrow beam waterline and the deep but small area keel and low wetted surface area hull form, the boat will be fast in light weather. Performance prediction work indicates that this design will be significantly faster in all conditions than all of our previous boats with the exception of hard reaching in heavy airs when our Southern Hemisphere 40's can just match this boat, conditions when these boats are presently considered invincible.

The rig is very much our usual fractional although the fore triangle is a little taller at the expense of some mainsail area to trade off some of this style of boat's fantastic upwind performance to boost running and broad reaching speed in light airs, the only conditions when our earlier designs appear to be a little fragile.

Construction is our normal highly developed Kevlar sandwich utilizing a PVC vacuum bagged core. This type of construction provides for a very stiff boat and clean roomy interior.

The weight is equivalent or better than using carbon fibre, the cost significantly less and structural behaviors in an overload situation is far more acceptable.

This design, like our 43 footers, should show all round capabilities with no weak areas in any conditions or directions.

The Yachting World hall of fame: 50 yachts that changed the way we sail

We asked historians, round the world race winners and legendary sailors to name the yachts that changed the sport for good. In no particular order, these are the 50 yachts that shifted how we sail...

21. One Tonner Jade

Built: 1985 Design: Rob Humphreys:

The Admiral’s Cup was the perfect testbed for design experimentation, typified by the One Tonner  Jade , which won the 1985 One Ton Cup and came second in the Admirals’ Cup of the same year.

Designer Rob Humphreys remembers: “She was designed to compete in what, with hindsight, was one of the most competitive One Ton Cup world championships ever. If I remember correctly there was a fleet of about 40 boats, counting probably 30 brand new ones.

“She was a very committed racing yacht – no compromises, which I was sometimes prone to do in order to add some value – and won the event.”

Owned by Larry and Debbie Wooddell,  Jade’ s talented crew included David Howlett and Rodney Pattison.

“She was a particularly good reaching boat but could hold her own in an upwind/downwind context,” adds Humphreys.

“The former characteristic was important because the Ton Cups then retained a strong offshore element and often one would sail with cracked sheets, and in this respect we tended to romp away from the competition. We were also leading our class in the same year’s Fastnet Race as part of the British Admiral’s Cup team, but lost our mast in ironically benign conditions in the Irish Sea.”

“With Jade’s [design] I sacrificed some draught against stability, and although it hurt a little upwind, in terms of VMG the power we had on a tight fetch was pretty awesome. The keel was heavily elliptical with a very short root-chord, commonly referred to as ‘Mickey Mouse’s ear!”

22. IMOCA 60 Safran 2

Built: 2015 Design: VPLP/Verdier

The IMOCA 60 class has pushed innovation for 25 years, from halyard locks and kick-up rudders, to numerous ballast systems and safety features, and even Owen Clarke Design Group’s Acciona , the first boat intended to race around the world without fossil fuels (the attempt failed when Acciona capsized).

Its most spectacular development has been the dynamic foil system. The 2016 Vendée Globe was the first to see semi-foiling IMOCA 60s racing around the world, and the first boat to be equipped with the curved ‘Dali moustache’ was the VPLP-Verdier designed Safran 2 .

“The new rules were putting the old boats kind of at a disadvantage because they had to have a one-design keel, one-design mast, restrictions on materials and so on. We knew that we couldn’t be as efficient in terms of sailing weight as we are with the old boats, so we moved onto the concept of how to use the dynamic system to lighten the boat,” explains designer Lauriot Prévost.

“Now, when they are sailing at say 10-12 tonnes they have something like half of the weight taken by the dynamic lift from the keel and foils, so it is as if the boat is sailing at 5 tonnes hydrodynamic weight.”

23. Damien II. 1974, Michel Joubert: Skip Novak nominates Joubert’s Damien II, the first yacht to winter in Antarctica. “For me it is without doubt this 15m steel hulled, lifting keel schooner that has been the major influence for opening up high latitude sailing for generations that followed. “Damien II created a design type for remote cruising in cold, sometimes ice-bound conditions. This means a robust steel hull, a lifting ballast keel to beach or access shallow water to avoid ice. There is unmistakable French camber on the otherwise flush deck, and a Plexiglass bubble for inside piloting. The interior was also cosy enough to raise three children aboard.”

23. Damien II

Built: 1974 Design: Michel Joubert

Jérôme Poncet  commissioned  Damien II  in 1974, having already sailed below the Antarctic Circle and around the world. He, his wife Sally and family, lived aboard Damien II for 12 years, exploring everywhere from Europe to Brazil, Polynesia, Tasmania and New Zealand, as well as the sub-Antarctic islands, becoming the first yacht to winter in Antarctica in 1978-79.

“For me it is without doubt the Damien II , a 15-metre steel hulled, lifting keel schooner that has been the major influence for opening up high latitude sailing for generations that followed,” comments Skip Novak.

“ Jérôme and Sally Poncet commissioned the Michel Joubert design and for the next 25 years routinely sailed in the far south on the Antarctic Peninsula, to the sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia and around the Falkland Islands .

“A few boats had dipped in far south around the same time – David Lewis on Icebird comes to mind, as does Bill Tilman years before on his Bristol Channel Pilot Cutters – but they were very much one-off voyages by vessels ill suited to the region. It was the Damien II that created a design type that was found to be a useful tool for remote cruising in cold, sometimes ice bound, conditions.

“This meant a robust steel hull, a lifting ballast keel to beach or access shallow water to avoid ice, the unmistakable French camber on the otherwise flush deck and the plexiglass bubble with a 360-degree view for inside piloting. The interior was cozy enough to raise three children aboard: son Dion was born on the saloon table in winter, on South Georgia. Otherwise systems were basic for ultimate reliability.

“This design, and not least of all what the Poncet’s achieved in pioneering voyages which included science surveys and supporting some of the best known BBC wildlife extravaganzas like Life in the Freezer , encouraged others to follow in various fashions.

“Thirty Damien hulls have been built along the same lines. My own original Pelagic , built in 1987, was an evolution with a sloop rig but modelled on the same concept and can be considered a ‘Damien type’ – as are any 45-55ft steel hulled lifting keel boats. Quite a legacy.”

24. Extreme 40

Built: 2005 Design: Yves Loday / Tornado Sport

The carbon fibre catamaran used in the Extreme Sailing Series (2007-2015) showcased the short-course , close to shore, ‘stadium’ style of racing which many events, including the America’s Cup , now seek to emulate.

It wasn’t the first class to capture the public imagination – in its 1990s heyday the Ultra 30 class, , with its multiple trapezing crew,  attracted mainstream broadcast television rights and big cash sponsorship. However, with the Extreme 40, organiser OC Sport took the concept of sailing as a spectator sport and marketing vehicle, and expanded it into a global phenomenon.

Navigator Michael Broughton comments: “It seems longer, but when the Extreme 40s were being built only 15 years ago, the America’s Cup was still sailed in 24-tonne monohulls with 17 crew. These boats have helped to make the careers of many elite sailors of today.”

25. Mirabella V

Built: 2003 Design: Ron Holland

Launched in 2003, and now refitted as M5 , Mirabella V has the tallest single mast in the world.

With an air draught of 290ft she cannot pass under the Golden Gate Bridge, but flies the largest jib ever made at 1,830 square metres from a huge carbon spar. Such vast loads required special battens which compress under shock load.

26. Tangaroa. 1965. James Wharram: Wharram sailed the self-built 23ft plywood catamaran Tangaroa from Las Palmas to Trinidad in 1955. “It is impossible to conceive of a vessel further removed from today’s high-tech racing multihulls or luxurious cruising catamarans, yet without her many of them would never have been built,” comments Tom Cunliffe.

26. Tangaroa

Built: 1965 Design: James Wharram

James Wharram sailed the self-built 23ft plywood catamaran Tangaroa from Las Palmas to Trinidad, arriving two days before Christmas  in 1955.

“It is impossible to conceive of a vessel further removed from today’s high-tech racing multihulls or luxurious cruising catamarans  which now sail the oceans of the world, yet without her it is arguable that many of them would never have been built ,” comments Tom Cunliffe.

“A true pioneer of western multihull voyaging, Wharram designed and constructed the affordable, effective Tangaroa himself. His crew were two German girls and Pepe the dog. This remarkable boat followed the philosophies of the traditional Polynesian seafarers, with her tiny plywood hulls connected by flexibly mounted beams and an open slatted platform.

“His team made no claim to be ‘ocean heroes’. Rather, they reflected early settlers discovering new worlds for themselves. Sixty years on, James Wharram remains an independent spirit whose refusal to compromise with the increasing bureaucracy that blights our times has made many a modern sailor ponder on what really matters in life. His stream of subsequent designs has set three generations free.”

27. Marigold. 1892, Charles Nicholson: Nicholson was just 22 when he created this elegant 59ft gaff-rigged cutter with a plumb bow and distinctive stern. She proved successful both on the racecourse and as a cruising yacht, and launched the precocious Nicholson’s career.

German Frers on Stealth : “The brief was: ‘I want a boat that will give me pleasure. It’s going to be called Stealth. It’s going to be black with black sails.’ It was high-performance, good looking and pointed the way towards a new type of yacht.” Photo: Gilles Martin Raget

28. Stealth

Built: 1996 Design: German Frers

Launched 24 years ago, Stealth was intended to be avant garde in styling and still looks remarkably contemporary now, with her much emulated minimalist teak deck, black hull and sails, and brooding interior.

Designed by German Frers for Fiat boss Gianni Agnelli, the 93ft Stealth  was one of the earliest high performance cruising designs to use water ballast to good effect, taking line honours in the 2001 Fastnet Race and America’s Cup Jubilee.

Built: 1937 Design: W. Starling Burgess/Olin Stephens

Ranger , the 135ft ‘Super J’ which won 32 out of her 34 races in 1937, was the first to be designed using tow-tank tests, and the last time the J’s would contest the America’s Cup.

Designers Burgess and Stephens each presented four designs, which were built to a 1/24 scale and tank-tested.

Analysis showed that the curious-looking model ‘77-C’, with her snub-nosed barrel bow, was top performer. The yacht was built as Ranger .

30. Lagoon 55, 1984, VPLP: Jimmy Cornell says: “One aspect that has influenced long distance cruising in my lifetime, is the increasing popularity of cruising catamarans.” Designer Marc van Peteghem comments: “Catamarans, which were considered a real niche market 30 or 35 years ago, are now something really big. The Lagoon 55 which we designed was a big change in that field, the first to really mix performance and control.”

Hi! I know about the Q-ton activity in Poland, but this activity in Russia was new to me. Interesting to see that you still use the IOR-rule. You have several good sailors, that duel in the Kingston Olympic games between Mankin and Albrechtson in Tempest! Perhaps Dennis Conner was 3:rd? Those America's Cup boats of your's in San Diego, that lacked funds... The Swedes in the Norlin-Södergren design "Tre Kronor" had a little more sponsoring, but not much. In fact "Tre Kronor" means three SEK (but it is also ironically the name of the Royal Castle in Stockholm). Regards, Booster
QT is one of the most popular classes in Russia We have about 35 Q-ton boats at Moscow Championship and about 30 Q-ton boats at Championship of Russia in 2009. The race calendar for Q-ton consist about 10-12 regattas every year (in Moscow) Another one active fleet is in Vladivostok and it consist of about 25 Konrad 25 (Peterson 25)/ In Vladivostok the races for Konrad 25 aren’t use IOR-rules. The Konrad 25 in Vladivostok is the monotype boat. Now in Vladivostok also use Platu-25 (about 10 boats)
dus25! What is the background of your Q-ton sailors? Any of the old Soling-sailors present? Any Finn-sailors? At some time your Soling sailors were very good, perhaps before the match-racing part was introduced at the Olympics? Those Soling sailors of yours bought second-hand stuff from other countries. Still they were among the fastest at the Soling World's. Impressive. What is the reason that the Q-ton is so popular in your coundtry. Can we learn something? Regards, Booster

dus25! Why NOT ! Welcome aboard ! For the people that build the ,Sukhoj - Su.26 or the Yak 54 sport planes, to not have excellent contemporary sport boats is just not googling what is happening in Russia. A fellow flies into Port Townsend with a Su26 sport plane and I've spent much time examining the plane and having worked for Boeing as a tooling engineer on the 767 start up after my Bayliner years; I can rate it with a Beech craft/Bonanza for an elegant high order build minus a leatherette appointed cabin. The www.vprincipe.ru web sit covers much of the river racing Scene in the big "M". I was google mapping a river on the East coast of the White Sea, were I clicked on a picture near a logging town's dock, and was surprised to see a 1980 Bayliner 2550 / Saratoga sedan cruiser !!!!!!! I would say of any place where the IOR could continue to influence boat design out side the pressure of the "one design think" would be a place like Russia. The US is a slave to marketing pressure to join the big white one design fleet. The thrust or focus towards the youth, sport boat design type to the exclusion of alternative designs personaly bugs me. These rich boat manufactures vacuum up " all "wanting to get into boats like the Quarter ton type boat. Often a J-24 can speed past my Peterson 25 in meny conditions but light air, yet I much prefer the P-25, to a j-24 hands down. Like meny monitoring this topic like these boats for one reason are an other. I enjoy seeing the snaps of the Quarter Ton boats and the racing in the Moscow waters.

Scandinavian - Evind Still?
difficult Mystery boat again!!! Gary B says Scandinavian, Eivind Still? Well, the stern looks like a little Doug Peterson, and Trägårdh (Sweden) did some sterns like that. Södergren usually didn't have that flat part under the transom. Norlin designed a quarter-tonner "Creme Fraiche" about 78-79 that was a little Manznita inspired. The backstay-arrangement is unusual in Sweden (under the relevant period). On old boats, say -50 you can find it. The compasses recessed in the deck is unusual in Sweden as well (under that period). Some german boats had that compass arrangement. On the other hand Judel&Vrolic was later. Perhaps Elvström&Kjearulf? This is a difficult one. Regards, Booster

If it is a true Davidson design it most likely would have an open transom. And he wouldn't have had those hi field levers on the backstay runners. Also the midships beam looks too wide for a Davidson, too much a fatty. The transom also looks very similar to a Berret's Oesophage Boogie 3/4 tonner - although this is a smaller boat.
Mystery quarter tonner. This is are " was " an interesting 1979 North Americans winner. The boat always reminded me of "Mr. Bill's Dog" 1/2 ton winner out of Oklahoma! Do not remember when Mr. Bill won the worlds 1980's? Any way, I well post a bow on snap of this 1/4 ton boat that Paul B well pick up on. I liked the way it's bow pulpit was laid out and duplicated it for my Peterson 25. Never regretted that. I didn't think fellows out side the US would recognize the design. Gary B was right on about the tacking runner levers. 1928-30 technology out of Scandinavia to help underway tuning for IOD - Dragons. When this 1/4 ton boat had success in the N.A. Latitude 38 talked it up about how slick the levers worked. I can attest to that fact. Most of the races were held on the Berkeley triangle, However one race "the first or last" can't recall ??? was started wright off the beach at the St.Frances Yacht club. The two boats that were hot on its heels looked like a Farr 727 and a Thunder bird ? Wasn't up close and personal with this race, Unfortunately. Yet with my field glasses I could see the boats jockeyed for position at the start and saw the levers let off, then bang they came on. very smooth. The Boat was Carl Schumacher's "Summertime Dream." crm

Paul B It was only a mini Toner????? Man my memory is shot. I will upload the Summertime file now, again I had resolution set to high. Also a shot at the start of a race at these N.A.'s I think it is of this Suzi you have mentioned, as it has a cabin port lite, however the Farr 727 did to. Sailing Anarchy had a very nice write up about the Kelly designed mini Mr. bill's"big" dog. I Do remember the Oklahoma connection, which cough my eye. Let's take a look. crm
