Marino Alfani

Yacht Designer, born in 1982, was born as a nautical professional 9 years ago, but he has always had the sea and yachting in his DNA. "The most beautiful job in the world, the one that allows you to create objects in harmony with nature and the sea, design boats": his profession.

Marino Alfani: Boats, love for the beautiful and … the hop!
- Nico Caponetto
- July 10, 2017
When he speaks, you hear the typical hard accent of a person who lived in Bergamo without mistake or doubt, an influence absorbed by birth and residence. It is important, however, to after his memories, to realize that for Marino Alfani , the Po Valley has represented only one of the banks on which his passions grew. The other is the southern shore of the life of this young and well-established designer, that line of coastline along the Gulf of Naples , the birthplace of Marino’s parents and the theater of his childhood and adolescent scenes.
“I came here to spend all my holidays,” the architect tells us, overlooking the terrace of the Circolo Canottieri Napoli where Rio Yachts ship-yard invited us to test the new Spider 40 whose blanket and interior carry the signature of Alfani. “My days were full of sea, boat, and islands”. Above all Procida island, the most popular, the most true, his favorite. Sea, boats and passion for drawing. Three words, a mixture that has become a profession, lived with rigor and preparation, to the point of being, at 35 years old, a prestigious signature of Italian design , especially under the projects of important Italian and foreign ship-yards.
Married, father of three children and guardian of three dogs, seven turtles and three fishes, Marino Alfani shows a quality that balances the strength with which he exposes his concepts, and his sympathy, a way of “being at hand” which does not impoverish the authority of the professional, but humanizes it.
In addition, while chatting with us, his look goes back several times on the boat we are going to try, the Spider 40 of Rio Yachts .
This is a very classical boat, a pure open.
It is the classic boat I saw surfing in these waters when I was a child, a typically Mediterranean boat, livable and manageable with simplicity.
So the source of inspiration are the great classics of the past?
I am convinced that without the memory of the past there is no future. In this case, I wanted to emphasize a concept: I love little designed, simple boats, in contrast to the fashion which inspire car design. A car has a short life cycle of 3-4 years, a boat lasts a lot longer, its lines must be simple, clean and do not tire over time. So I was inspired by a key concept in my work, namely to avoid elite boat projects. If I want to exemplify, I can say that I love boats comparable to small penthouses but with large terraces.
What is the main character of a designer?
Knowing how to accompany customers in their dreams, in their game.
What does it mean concretely?
It means not to make the big star that imposes. Especially in boating, the customer has a degree of confidence in the designer, but often has a lot of experience as well. A good designer listens, and finds a point of balance, a mediation to accomplish something beautiful and functional.
You are an interior designer not only for boats but also for homes, shops, hotels. Is there a common denominator, from the point of view of design, between such diverse domains?
No, there is no common denominator. The boats are thought in millimeters and the houses, the hotels in centimeters. As far as I am concerned, I approach the project in two methods. The first is listening; the second is the care of detail that does not simply mean care for the little things. The detail is not a fringe. It is creating something, a fitting, an insert, an embellishment that has a function. The detail must have a strong character and must have a sense, its use.
Do you think there will be something that will characterize the nautical design of the coming years?
Up to now, it has been drawn of everything, and often chasing the fashion is what we were doing. I believe that true research in design in general and not just in the nautical field, is harmony, return to the beaty, and above all, the absence of vulgarity. Today we live in a vulgar society, where the value of money does not have a relative measure, does not bring with it other values as in the past, but often dominates relationships. I have three children, and I know the importance and the need to earn, but also the need for balance, harmony that has disappeared.
The last compulsory question about future projects. What is boiling in your pot?
I am following a few new projects. A 34-meter yacht in Brazil, the 38-foot America for Shipyards, a 50-foot and 60-foot Rio Yachts. Then….
Then I am starting a production of hops for the breweries in a piece of land where I will also raise goats and grow berries. I do it for my children, to show them another face of this existence, but also for me. I am doing well, and you know, even going to talk of hops with Coldiretti , I feel comfortable, it gives me serenity!

Marino Alfani: yacht design and creativity
- April 4, 2019
- Sofia Luise
As you can see in the video just launched, Marino Alfani always starts from a hand-drawn design, so much so that he likes to call himself “old-fashioned”; in fact, among his working tools he will never give up his drafting machine, from which modern and cutting edge yachts of different sizes and types have come to life, designed to meet the needs of shipowners and sailors from all over the world.
About Alfani
After graduating in Industrial Design at the Politecnico di Milano, a master’s degree in yacht design and experience at the Officina Italiana Design, Alfani founded the Marino Alfani Design study in Bergamo. He has achieved success among the well-known names of the boating industry to set up his own niche market, collaborating with Italian and foreign shipyards, particularly in South America (especially Brazil) and the United States. Since 2016, he has also been an external speaker for university theses at IAAD, the Institute of Applied Art and Design in Turin, while he has also been collaborating with the Andrea Fantoni School of Applied Art in Bergamo, where he has held several workshops on nautical design.
Among the most important awards received by Alfani are the MYDA – Millenium Yacht Design Award, granted in 2010 for the project Dlimo and then again, two years later, for the project Hospital Boat, which gained a large media following. Also, in 2012, thanks to the project Rio Espera 34, the Industrial Design Association nominated him for the Compasso d’Oro. In 2017, the designer also received a nomination for the European Power Boat of the Year, for the Rio Colorado 44, and a nomination for the Yacht Trophies Award, for the Rio 60 GC. In 2018, thanks to the Rio Spider 40 project, he was once again nominated for the European Power Boat of the Year

Rio sport coupé 56, a boat to “uncover”.
The new Rio Sport Coupé 56 is a 18-meter versatile and customizable yacht. The first unit has just been launched and is cruising with its owner in the waters of Maine, USA.
So the new open hardtop by Rio Yachts is popular in the home of lobster and trawler boats. Could it be the advanced interior design, or the high level of customization? In any case Rio Sport Coupé 56 can face a wide and diversified spectrum of markets and geographical areas.
It is not just for that “ Made in Italy ” touch, in terms of aesthetic refinement and quality of materials, but also – we stress once again – for its interior layout . Let’s start with the main deck: both the cockpit and – surprisingly, in a way – the galley are rather versatile.
The galley can become a new area of conviviality for guests.
As for the cockpit , the chance of having it fully closed or open, thanks to a glass door , may not be previously unseen, but still it’s not that common on an 18-meter yacht.
Beyond this, what catches the attention on the new Rio Sport Coupé 56 is the details, such as the “extra large” opening of the superstructure’s roof, or the chance of also opening the side sections of the windows, which makes the salon almost like the one of a classic express cruiser without the hardtop.
The hard top itself is built in crystal and enhances the feeling of being open-air, even when the room is totally closed.
A futuristic console
You stand at the helm , and you will enjoy the latest electronics , in particular from Garmin Marine due to the partnership between the two companies.
The dashboard boasts two 12-inch multi-function touchscreens, from which the driver can manage all the instruments on board, such as cameras, autopilot, echosounder, radar and GPS – just to name the main ones.
I now want to point out another peculiarity: the dashboard itself, which is kinda floating in the air. This gives a strong aesthetic charachterization even to technical compartment, but at the same time it allows to widen the airiness of the underlying space (which, in this case, is the galley).
Versatility that meets different tastes
As we mentioned, the galley itself plays an important role on board Rio Sport Coupé 56, because it is on a lower level than the aft living room: in this way, it’s an independent room as on superyachts, but at the same time it is part of an open space with the rest of the yacht.
This solution perfectly complies with American taste, where open spaces are favourites, but still doesn’t forget the European (and Mediterranean in particular) way of dividing the space .
Another one-fits-all solution is in the cockpit : it’s perfect for Americans thanks to the huge C-shaped dinette running from the transom to the saloon entrance. So, where’s the solarium ? Just tilt down the aft backseat and there you have a sun bed, so boaters from the Med are happy as well.
Uncommonly, the submersible swim platform is really large, and the area can also be featured with a hidden grill facing back.
Two lower layouts
Below deck the new Rio Sport Coupé 56 offers different options, with two or three cabins and two heads. Then again, you can choose whether to have a crew cabin renouncing the garage for the tender.
The master room is located amidships and takes the whole beam of the yacht, with the bed placed sideways . The cabin also sports a tea-for-two with armchairs and table.
The owner’s bathroom is spread over the entire width of the hull, standing between the cabin and the engine room: in this way it also contributes to better noise-insulating the cabin itself.
The VIP to bow doesn’t falls short in terms of space. Here too, the long portholes let the light flood in, while the bathroom has a double door. Because, beside working as a day toilet, it can also serve the third cabin , in case the layout option is the one which drops the lower dinette for another room with two, L-placed bunks.
Spider 40, intrepid reliability. The test of the new open from Rio Yachts
The interiors are by Marino Alfani , in collaboration with the technical office of Rio Yachts, but the manufacturer goes further and offers a high level of interior customization .
Each owner has a rather wide choice of materials and furnishing solutions , and can be supported by a team of professionals.
What about performance ? We haven’t tested it yet, so we trust the shipyard: thirty-five knots of top speed have been reached thanks to the twin 800hp Mans . Now, Rio 56 is already in the USA, cruising the cold and beautiful waters of Maine.

Daytona 50 En
“It's not about having ideas. It's about making them happen. ” - Scott Belsky -
Freedom and emotion.
In the year of its 60th anniversary, RIO YACHTS, historic Italian excellence, presents a new yacht synonymous with freedom and luxury: DAYTONA 50.
The DAYTONA range, which started in September 2020 with DAYTONA 34, a hugely successful model that after just a few months from being presented at Genoa’s Boat Show sold the entire production of the season, meets the new demand for practical and sporty open boats, suitable for short-distance cruising, with preference for space above rather than below deck and dynamic and fun performances.
DAYTONA 50, RIO YACHTS’ latest interpretation of this trend, is the work of one of Italy’s most talented designers, Marino Alfani, who also curated the concept, design, and interior, and even collaborated with the boatyard technical department on engineering aspects.
INNOVATION
Its main characteristics include walk around deck and central console, maximum space on board thanks to a boundless cockpit, total safety, and ease of movement above deck: a boat designed to socialise, enjoy, and relax.
A 15-metre yacht that offers a brilliant and fun performance, able to reach a maximum speed of over 40 knots, with the option of either 3 outboard or 2 inboard Diesel engines.
The lines are clean and symmetrical. The wraparound wind shield offers perfect visibility. The sleek bow reflects the strong personality of the design.
The spacious cockpit has a generous stern sun deck under which there is space for a tender. The bathing platform, spacious even on the version with the outboard engines, can be fitted with a tenderlift and two amazing large terraces can be opened both on the right and on the left, adding substantial space to the already impressive cockpit and providing a unique connection with the water. The table in the cockpit can easily accommodate six people and is completely concealable. Midship, a spacious open-air galley separates the cockpit from the highly technological, functional, and practical helm station, covered by a convenient, sporty, and light Bimini with just two supports (instead of the usual four featured by the competition), yet extremely stable, which offers generous coverage. The addition of an electric cover from the Bimini and two shades at the bow and the stern offer plenty of options to manage sun and shade as required.
The walkway to the bow is wide, practical, and safe. A two-seat sofa is just a few strides away, opposite the sun lounger on the deckhouse.
The interior is open space, bright and finished with great attention to details. If needed, when guests are on board, the cabins can be divided thanks to a mobile partition, creating privacy and exclusive comfort. The materials, which can be personalised by the owner, are the expression of the highest level of quality that only Made in Italy can provide.
All you have to do is... get on board!

Marino Alfani designs the Rio sport coupé
The Sport Coupé 56 from Rio Yachts , designed by Marino Alfani , is a yacht with contemporary styling.
The sporty, streamlined exteriors are matched by clean, well-defined interiors. The light-filled spaces give the impression of being bigger than they are, not least because of the decision to use light-hued colourways.
The sophisticated original inserts made from solid teak and steel that adorn and enrich the decor are distinctive style traits in Marino Alfani’s work.
Marino Alfani is the designer behind the new model from Rio Yachts , a 17.55-meter yacht featuring contemporary styling, tailormade details and fine finishing.
A boat with a sporty spirit , like many other models built by this storied brand established in 1961, the 56 is a classic example of the expressive style embraced by the designer , who isn’t a great lover of frills and flowing lines, but always strives for clean, clear-cut contours .
“The feature I like most about this 56 is the light : the full-beam master suite and living area are a perfect example of welcoming, light-filled settings where the layout makes the most of every available centimeter,” explained Marino Alfani, the owner of the yacht & interior design firm established in 2007.
With the look of a true open, designed for owners who want a continuous contact with the sea, the Sport Coupé is a modern, light-filled yacht. The materials featured in the decor are marble , glass , white-painted oak and solid teak inserts . Original handles made-to-measure from polished stainless steel adorn the interiors and add even more personality to settings that are both essential and comfortable , created to encourage a mood of conviviality and sharing.
Two key features of the outdoor spaces are unquestionably the big pivoting stern swim platform, with the garage for the tender, and the black-painted section on the hull, which unites the two glazed surfaces and gives the motor yacht a touch of originality , not to mention an immediately recognisable silhouette .
The interiors have characteristic light-hued tone-on-tone colourways that highlight the contemporary feel of the boat, as well as making the spaces seem even brighter with the help of the huge glazed surfaces everywhere. The crystal glass door between the cockpit and the helm station ensures both privacy and contact with the outdoor environment, as well as being a central feature of the interior decoration.
Clean lines, a contemporary mood, the celebration of light and contact with the sea are the key concepts underpinning this design. In the words of Marino Alfani: “I’m proud to have contributed to the creation of this model and enthusiastic with the results achieved. Every new boat I design for Rio Yachts is a new start for me, one in which I’m given the maximum freedom of expression. Every model is also totally different from the previous one : the design of the last boat, for example, was dominated by black, whereas on this model the featured colour is white. The 56 is the result of teamwork and the ongoing and profitable sharing of ideas and proposals between me, the shipyard’s technical office and the owner”.
