How to choose the right linen for your superyacht
Choosing linen for your yacht is much more complicated than deciding it for the home. It needs to be more durable, more personalised and must tick multiple boxes so make sure you get it right with our superyacht linen buying guide.
Linen on board needs to work hard. At the top end of the superyacht charter market, bed linen is changed daily, so it needs to withstand the rigours of the laundry without compromising on style, comfort or durability. It must also be ordered in large quantities – experts recommend three to five sets of bed linen per cabin – and might be monogrammed with the yacht’s logo or custom-coloured to fit a particular colour scheme. Bed and table linen often must be made to measure to work with the custom-designed furniture on board. And it needs to be easy to replace: rare is the superyacht that has not lost the odd deck towel in the wind.
How to choose bed linen for yachts
1. Linen or cotton?
While freshly laundered linen sheets are considered by many to be the last word in bedtime luxury, high-quality Egyptian cotton is generally best suited to life on a superyacht because it is cool on the skin and relatively easy to care for. “The more pure a fabric is, the more comfortable it will be to sleep in and the easier it is to handle,” says Caroline Koc, owner of luxury linen specialist Haremlique . “We use 100 per cent Egyptian cotton, which allows the sheet to breathe, leaving you with a serene and fresh feeling.”
Linen has a soft, sumptuous texture and while its looser weave allows good air circulation, it creases readily and requires more care than cotton. “Linen also takes up more space in terms of storage,” Koc adds.
2. Percale or sateen?
There are two main cotton-fabric constructions for bed linen. Percale cotton is woven from the same number of vertical and horizontal threads, resulting in a flat, even interlacing. Sateen cotton has more horizontal threads than vertical, giving it a lustre or sheen. Percale sheets allow the most airflow, whereas sateen sheets, though smoother to the touch, are less porous and generally warmer.
3. The finished item
Be sure to buy bed and table linen that has been finished in Italy. Once an Egyptian yarn has been woven, the raw cotton fabric is exported to be washed, bleached and mercerised and the Italians are the undisputed world leaders at that.
4. Confused about thread count?
It’s hardly surprising. A high thread-count is not necessarily a byword for luxury linen, as a large number of threads per square inch can make a fabric dense and unsupple if the threads themselves are not gossamer thin. This is fine if you are looking for a formal tablecloth – not so good if you want a sheet to sleep under. Alexandra Swindells, international sales manager of Elite Yacht Linen , recommends a thread count of 600 for an owner cabin, upwards of 300 for charter and 200 for crew.
5. What about ply?
In terms of bed linen, ply refers to the number of strands wrapped together to make a single thread. Single-ply fabrics, as a rule, are lighter and sheerer than double-ply.
6. Is bespoke a byword for the best?
In a word, yes. “Naval architects working on superyachts are bringing their clients’ dreams to life,” says Gemma Weir-Williams, creative director of bespoke linen and tableware suppliers Gillian Weir . “Very little is standard size, so everything from the table linen to the bed sheets must be bespoke.”
Sabrina Monteleone, owner of yacht outfitter Sabrina Monte-Carlo , agrees: “Owners expect the unique. They often wish for linen to be customised with special embroidery, with their initials, or the boat’s logo, for example. The colour details of the bed and bath linen should also match the cabin’s colour scheme and may need to be ordered in a bespoke colour.”
How to choose table linen for yachts
7. How much will I need?
Depending on the occasion, a yacht will require at least three styles of table linen: a breakfast set, which will usually comprise of place mats and napkins; a set for daytime alfresco dining; and a formal dinner set. “I would always recommend white, with touches of colour through embroidery,” says Koc. A thick cotton fabric with a high thread count will give a feeling of sumptuousness, although more rustic-looking pure linen can work beautifully for informal dining. Again, bespoke is the watchword here.
8. How do I tell real quality?
“What stands a quality linen apart is when you go from machine embroidered to hand embroidered, says Jason Hales of Jonathan Fawcett. “Each and every stitch is done by hand in the latter, something a machine could never replicate. For discerning clients, hand embroidery is where you see a huge difference.”
How to choose towels for yachts
9. This is the easy bit, right?
It is, although again there are still some points to remember. Yacht cabins will need at least three sizes of towel (shower, hair and hand) plus facecloths and bath mats, all of which may be detailed to match the cabin’s colour scheme. “We recommend soft, white cotton towels mainly for practical reasons,” advises Andrea Salvador, from Venetian linen specialist Jesurum . “But I prefer linen for the face towels, which is very elegant.” And think in quantities; up to five sets per cabin will be required.
10. What about swimming towels?
“Avoid brightly coloured deck towels,” warns Swindells. “Colours will fade, even in UV-protected fabrics, after prolonged exposure to the sun.” Look for towelling that has had special treatment against sun and salt water and which will be easy to replace when the inevitable happens.

What our clients say about our service...
"My Dad used to have a thing called the 'snail tong' list - a huge list of every conceivable item needed for eating, drinking and living on board: so called as many years ago he delivered a yacht without this essential device and the first meal the Owners had on board was, of course, snails. The team at Glancy Fawcett would never let this happen (quite apart from having several snail tongs in several finishes to choose from) and it is a pleasure working alongside them to help us with the details and logistics of specifying and supplying china, glass and much besides for our projects."
Dickie Bannenberg, Bannenberg & Rowell
"It has been a privilege working so closely with Glancy Fawcett over the years. They have supplied integral furnishings for numerous Winch Design projects. Most recently, for Cloud 9, a yacht which we designed, Glancy Fawcett delivered some exquisite Anna Torfs accessories and wood sculptures. Both companies work so well together due to the shared ability to realise the client's dreams."
Andrew Winch, Winch Design
"Our company built its reputation in the superyacht industry on excellence in presentation and attention to every single detail. We carefully select our long-term partners on the same standards and expect from them the same level of quality we impose on board our fleet, every day, everywhere around the world. Choosing Glancy Fawcett corresponds to these expectations: we share the same vision, the same idea of excellence and our strong relationships offers to our clients the best luxury tableware, linens and accessories to the best rates and delivery time."
"I have known the team at Glancy Fawcett for over 20 years.... There isn't another firm in their sector of the market that knows its business as well as they do. Incredible product knowledge, ultimate professionals, extremely honest and great fun to work with. How safe are luxury yachts? What to know after Mike Lynch yacht disaster left 7 dead
The Bayesian was a world-class yacht.
The 19th largest yacht designed by luxury Italian manufacturer Perini , it boasted a sleek interior design by French designer Remi Tessier, a double engine, and one of the tallest aluminum masts in the world. It won multiple awards, including for "best sailing yacht" the year after its release.
But, almost two weeks ago on Aug. 19, the luxurious vessel sank to the bottom of the ocean off the coast of Sicily in an internationally-followed disaster, dumping 22 people aboard into the water and leaving seven dead , including British tech magnate Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah .
"The impossible happened on that boat," Giovanni Costantino, the yacht manufacturer's CEO, told Reuters.
In the wake of the disaster, an ongoing investigation into possible criminal errors committed by the Bayesian's crew and lingering questions surrounding its design underscore the need for proper yacht safety measures and practical ship designs, according to experts.
Italian prosecutors from a nearby town have now widened their investigation into possible criminal actions by the ship's captain in the lead-up to the shipwreck to include two additional crew members, a judicial source told Reuters on Wednesday.
Tim Parker Eaton and Matthew Griffith are now under investigation for manslaughter and shipwreck, days after news broke that investigators are probing whether Captain James Cutfield committed the same crimes.
Authorities are looking into whether Parker Eaton, a ship engineer, failed to protect the ship's engine room and operating systems. Griffith, a sailor on the ship, was on watch duty on the morning the ship sank.
Cutfield "exercised his right to remain silent" when investigators interrogated him on Tuesday, Giovanni Rizzuti, his lawyer, told Reuters.
"First, he's very worn out," Rizzuti said. "Second, we were appointed only on Monday, and for a thorough and correct defense case, we need to acquire a set of data that at the moment we don't have."
Rizzuti did not immediately respond to a request for comment emailed to him by USA TODAY.
Rescuers found the bodies of Chris Morvillo, an American citizen and lawyer for Clifford Chance, his wife, Neda Morvillo, Jonathan Bloomer, a non-executive chair of Morgan Stanley International, and his wife, Judy Bloomer, inside the ship two days after the wreck. Recaldo Thomas, the ship's cook who also went by Ricardo, was the first person pronounced dead in the disaster – his body was recovered on the day of the sinking.
Captains must follow safety procedures before storms
Costantino chalked up the boat's fate to a "series of indescribable, unreasonable errors" committed by the crew. The ship's crew made an "incredible mistake" in not preparing adequately for the storm, he said.
Costantino said the crew should have summoned passengers from their rooms earlier, as the storm picked up. The keel, a heavy weight under the ship to counterbalance the ship's large mast, should have been lowered, and portholes should have been closed – both factors that could influence whether the captain is found culpable, according to experts .
Captains should always check weather forecasts and look into local weather patterns, Mitchell Stoller, a maritime expert witness and captain, told USA TODAY . When in stormy weather, captains should also weigh anchor, so that a ship can float over unstable waters, he added.
"The general standard of care in this situation is to monitor the weather, exercise caution, have a night watch, have the engine going, ready to maneuver," he said.

Wealthy clients push for impractical designs, expert says
Costantino said the ship's design and construction was error-free. But one yacht design expert disagrees.
"There's so many other factors, and this huge, complex boat is part of it," said Tad Roberts, a British Columbia-based yacht designer who has worked in the industry for nearly 40 years.
The Bayesian's giant mast is part of a trend of bigger and bigger yachts, according to Roberts. He worked on the design of the Asolare, formerly the Scheherazade – at 154 feet long, the largest cold-molded sailing yacht in the world when it was released in 2003, according to its manufacturer, Hodgdon Yacht Services. "It's small today," Roberts added.
Roberts said problems emerge when yacht designers can't say no to wealthy clients' demands for more and more extravagant and overgrown designs.
"The clients are wealthy people. They are very used to getting whatever it is they want," he said.
But owners' requests can compromise security, he said.
"Owners are not naval architects," he said. "They don't understand the issues involved, and trying to explain to them may or may not work, but there are compromises being made all the time."
Yacht buyers are more likely to get a better boat than they would 50 years ago, since yachts are exported and built towards international standards, he said. Still, the worsening effects of climate change and extreme weather are growing risks to anyone sailing the high seas, he added.
"Be aware. That's the biggest part of it," he said. "There's a possibility that things could go bad, that there is risk involved."

Yacht owners install million-dollar, AI-powered security systems
Piracy on yachts is even rarer than sudden storms – only two cases were reported between 2019 and 2023, according to the International Maritime Bureau's Piracy Reporting Centre . Still, superyacht owners are investing in James Bond-esque technology in an effort to protect their vessels.
"There's definitely increased concern," said Frederik Giepmans, managing director of safety and security at MARSS, a technology company that offers high-tech surveillance and security systems for superyachts with a price tag "from the hundreds of thousands into millions," he said.
NiDAR, a software program manufactured by MARSS to provide protection for superyachts, can pick up on objects approaching a yacht from the air or water "while underway, at anchor and in port," according to the company's website.
The surveillance system uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to handle data from sensors monitoring all sides of a vessel. The AI system provides "constant, long range monitoring of the air, of the surface, of the underwater, to try and give the crew as much response time as possible," said Giepmans.
That way, yacht owners can pick up on any manner of approaching objects, from "small, fast craft approaching on the surface" to divers and submarines under the water.
But if a threat is detected, a yacht owner's "options to respond are limited," Giepmans said. "You can get out of the way. You can bring people to safety. But, for instance, a more military response is not available to you."
Giepmans pointed to a recent increase in attacks on commercial ships, like attacks carried out by Houthi rebels on ships cruising through the Red Sea. "There's a gap there in terms of security," he said. "Because there isn't really, right now, a way for commercial or private clients, to respond, perhaps, in an appropriate way to these threats."
Luxury yacht owners cruising off the coast of Monaco, for instance, shouldn't be as concerned about a direct threat to their security, as compared with boats sailing through other locations, he said. "It really depends on that, as to what extent they will go to protect their ship."
The greater danger could come from adverse weather events, as the planet warms every year.
Meteorologists have pointed to a water spout, a tornado that spun up over the water amid the storm that hit the Bayesian, as a possible factor in its wreck.
Water temperatures in the area were more than three degrees higher than average that day, the perfect conditions for the spout to form and the likely result of climate change, Rick Shema, a certified consulting meteorologist and former member of the Navy, previously told USA TODAY.
"The water spout was an uncommon occurrence. But again, these things happen, especially in warmer water," he said.

Interior designer Moscow Shipyard was commissioned for the internal interior styling. Russia is the country that Timmerman Yachts built their new build motor yacht in. After her formal launch in 2004 in Moscow the boat was then handed over to the owner after final finishing. Her hull was constructed with steel. The motor yacht main superstructure is made predominantly from aluminium. With a width of 6.8 m or 22.31 feet OLSTEN has moderate internal space. A fairly shallow draught of 1.7m (5.56ft) affects the number of harbours she can berth in, taking into account their particular depth.

What Is Known About the Sinking of a Luxury Yacht off the Coast of Sicily and Those Aboard
Specialist cave divers working in 12-minute underwater shifts are searching for six missing passengers and crew, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, believed to be in the submerged wreck of a luxury yacht that was slammed by a powerful storm and swiftly sank off Sicily

PORTICELLO, Sicily (AP) — Specialist cave divers working in 12-minute underwater shifts were searching Tuesday for six missing passengers and crew, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, believed to be in the submerged wreck of a luxury yacht that was slammed by a powerful storm and swiftly sank off Sicily.
The sleek yacht, named the Bayesian, was carrying a crew of 10 people and 12 passengers when it suddenly sank near the Mediterranean island that is part of Italy at about 4 a.m. on Monday. One body has been recovered and 15 people survived.
Fire rescue officials have said the six believed to remain in the sailboat's hull will be considered missing until they are located in the wreckage.
Here's what we know so far about the sinking and those who were on board.
What happened?
Italian civil protection officials believe a sudden and fierce storm that battered the coast of Sicily in the early hours of Monday whipped up a waterspout in the exact spot where the 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged Bayesian was moored.
Karsten Borner, the captain of another yacht moored nearby, said he saw the Bayesian during the storm but when the wild weather passed it was gone and he saw only a red flare lighting the night sky, the Italian news agency ANSA and the Giornale di Sicilia newspaper reported.
Borner and one of his crew boarded their tender and found a lifeboat carrying 15 people, some of them injured. They took them aboard their yacht and alerted the coast guard.
Rescue authorities said the wreck was resting at a depth of 50 meters (163 feet) about a half mile offshore of the picturesque fishing village of Porticello.
Who was on board?
Among the missing is 59-year-old tech tycoon Mike Lynch , sometimes described as the British Bill Gates. Lynch was acquitted in June of all charges in a U.S. fraud trial linked to the $11 billion sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard in 2011.
Lynch still faced a potentially huge bill stemming from a civil case in London that HP mostly won during 2022. Damages haven’t been determined in that case, but HP is seeking $4 billion. Lynch made more than $800 million from the Autonomy sale.
A Cambridge-educated mathematician, Lynch made his name running Autonomy, which made a search engine that could pore through emails and other internal business documents to help companies find vital information more quickly.
Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter Hannah was reportedly among the missing. His wife, Angela Bacares, and 14 other people survived.
Among others still missing Tuesday, according to the civil protection agency, were one of Lynch’s U.S. lawyers, Christopher Morvillo of Clifford Chance, and Morvillo’s wife, Neda. Morvillo was regarded as an elite defense lawyer and was also a federal prosecutor in New York after 9/11.
Also missing was Jonathan Bloomer, the non-executive chairman of Morgan Stanley International, and his wife, Judy. He is the former head of the Autonomy audit committee and testified for the defense at Lynch’s trial.
Bloomer was also chair of the Hiscox Group, an insurer that does business on the Lloyd’s of London market.
“We are deeply shocked and saddened by this tragic event,” Hiscox CEO Aki Hussain said in a statement.
Among the survivors was Charlotte Golunski, who said she momentarily lost hold of her 1-year-old daughter Sofia in the water, but then managed to grab her and hold her up over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were both pulled to safety, ANSA reported. The father, identified by ANSA as James Emslie, also survived.
The Dutch foreign ministry said a Dutch man survived. The ministry, citing privacy, did not release his identity.
One body was recovered on Monday, identified as the on-board chef.
What is the Bayesian?
The Bayesian was a luxury yacht built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Nav. It was known for its single 75-meter (246-feet) aluminum mast — one of the world’s tallest. Online charter sites listed it for rent for up to 195,000 euros (about $215,000) a week.
Its registered owner is listed as Revtom Ltd., based on the Isle of Man, according to online maritime database Equasis. Lynch’s wife is listed as Revtom’s sole owner, according to corporate registration documents from the Isle of Man.
The yacht's name is an apparent reference to “Bayesian inference,” one of the two main approaches to statistical machine learning and the one that was used by Autonomy.
What is a waterspout?
Waterspouts are tornadoes that form over water and can happen when a storm moves across warm water.
According to the U.S. National Ocean Service, there are two types of waterspouts — fair-weather and tornadic.
Tornadic waterspouts “have the same characteristics as a land tornado. They are associated with severe thunderstorms, and are often accompanied by high winds and seas, large hail, and frequent dangerous lightning,” the service says on its website.
While scientists haven’t attributed the specific event to climate change, average monthly surface temperatures have been at record highs for months . Hotter air can hold more moisture, making heavier storms more likely.
Sicily has been baking under intense heat this summer , and the United Nations’ panel of climate change experts notes the Mediterranean Sea is particularly vulnerable to climate change, with warming rates roughly 20% higher than the global average.
How rare is it for a huge sailboat like this to capsize?
Experts say it is extraordinarily rare for a luxury sailboat of this size to capsize due to weather events.
“This just doesn’t happen. You know, boats sink because things like keels fall off, or they run aground and breach the hull ... whereas just from a weather angle, a boat that big being pushed over on its side is absolutely extraordinary,” said Skip Novak, a lifelong sailor who has taken part in multiple round the world yacht races and written books about sailing.
Novak said he believed that strong gusts likely pushed the yacht over 90 degrees to its side, and the vessel did not recover because of the weight of the huge mast and because it was anchored. He suggested that internal doors were likely not closed, and water quickly poured in to sink the vessel.
“When you’re at anchor, even if it’s blowing with a storm in the Mediterranean, you rarely shut the whole boat down because nobody expects something like this to happen," Novak told The Associated Press. “So if the boat wasn’t completely watertight at the deck, you’d have flooding going in. It would take a couple minutes and that would be it."
What happens next?
As the search for the missing continues, authorities already have begun trying to piece together exactly what happened.
Prosecutors from the Sicilian town of Termini Imerese have opened an investigation, as is normal in such events even when no suspects are identified. To date, they have not commented publicly.
The British Marine Accident Investigation Branch said four of its inspectors were being deployed to Palermo.

Brunello Cucinelli
You may have seen pictures of celebrities dressed in this luxury fashion brand, but chances are that you weren’t aware of the brand name. The Brunello Cucinelli brand is called after the Italian fashion designer who started the company in 1978 and has since gone on to dress celebrities and Silicon Valley giants. Despite dressing many famous celebrities, the luxury brand doesn’t rely on celebrity endorsements in advertisements, as it prefers to be more subtle.
You may not have noticed from the casual appearance, but many tech moguls have appeared in interviews in luxury clothing from the Cucinelli line. But for those who can afford it, what they get in return is the key to unlocking the world’s most coveted locales precisely when they want them. Five bodies found inside superyacht that sank off Sicily
PORTICELLO, Sicily — Divers recovered four bodies Wednesday from inside a superyacht that sank in a sudden storm off Sicily , Salvatore Cocina, director of the island's Civil Protection Agency, confirmed to NBC News.
Cocina later confirmed to Sky News that a fifth body had been found and was being brought to shore. One passenger remains missing.
The identities of the bodies were not immediately released. Their recovery follows a dayslong search in the deep waters off Italy where British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and several others were believed to be trapped in the hull. Fifteen of the 22 people aboard survived.
The rest had been missing since early Monday, when the Bayesian was caught in the storm anchored off the coast of Porticello, a village near the Sicilian capital city, Palermo.
The body of the ship’s cook, identified as Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian Antiguan national, was recovered Monday.
On Wednesday, NBC News witnessed what appeared to be at least three body bags being lifted from fire department boats after they pulled into port at Porticello. It was unclear whose bodies they were. Some were later transferred to ambulances and driven away from the dock.
Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah; Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, Judy; and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife, Neda, are also missing.
The Bayesian is owned by a firm linked to Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, who was among the survivors rescued by a nearby vessel after they got into a lifeboat.
Built by the Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi in 2008, the U.K.-registered yacht could carry 12 guests and a crew of up to 10, according to online specialist boating sites. Its nearly 250-foot mast is the tallest aluminum sailing mast in the world, according to CharterWorld Luxury Yacht Charters.
Regularly described in U.K. media as “Britain’s Bill Gates,” Lynch was acquitted of fraud by a San Francisco jury this year, stemming from the sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion in 2011.
The Mediterranean sailing vacation was designed to be a celebration for Lynch, who brought Bloomer, who testified in his defense, and Morvillo, one of his U.S. lawyers, on the trip.
Lynch's co-defendant Stephen Chamberlain was not aboard the Bayesian, but in what appears to be a tragic coincidence, a car struck and killed him Saturday as he was jogging in a village about 68 miles north of London, local police said.
Claudio Lavanga and Claudia Rizzo reported from Porticello. Henry Austin reported from London.
Claudio Lavanga is Rome-based foreign correspondent for NBC News.
Claudia Rizzo is an Italy based journalist.

Putin rattled after Moscow ‘under attack from biggest ever drone strike’

Moscow came under one of the largest attacks yet by Ukrainian drones since the start of fighting in 2022, further rattling Vladimir Putin as he attempts to fight Ukrainian troops in the Kursk region.
The Ministry of Defence claimed that Russia downed 45 Ukrainian drones overnight, with 11 destroyed over the Moscow region, 23 over the Bryansk region, six over Belgorod, three over Kaluga and two over Kursk.
Moscow mayor Sergey Sobyanin said on his Telegram channel: ‘This was one of the biggest attempts of all time to attack Moscow using drones.’
He said strong defences around the capital made it possible to shoot down all the drones before they could hit their intended targets.
Some Russian social media channels shared videos of drones apparently being destroyed by air defence systems, which then set off car alarms.
Alexander Bogomaz, the governor of the Bryansk region, which borders Ukraine, reported a ‘mass’ attack on his region but that 23 drones were destroyed.
While Ukraine has been bogged down in a land conflict in eastern Europe in which the Russians have been driving forward slowly at a heavy cost to both sides, Kyiv has also been attacking Russia with drones.
Ukraine has targeted oil refineries and airfields in an attempt to weaken Russia’s fighting potential, and has also targeted the capital several times.
The drone attacks come as Ukrainian forces are continuing to push into Russia’s western Kursk region.
The daring incursion into Russia has raised morale in Ukraine with its surprising success and changed the dynamic of the fighting.
But it is uncertain how long Ukraine will be able to hold the territory it has seized in Kursk.
It has also opened up another front in a fight where Ukrainian forces were already badly stretched.
The gains in Kursk come as Ukraine continues to lose ground in its eastern industrial region of Donbas.
The Institute for the Study of War, a think tank based in Washington, said in its daily report late on Tuesday that the Ukrainians had made additional advances in their incursion, now in its third week.
The Russian state news agency Tass reported that 31 people had died since Ukraine’s attack on Russia began on August 6, citing an unnamed source in the medical service – figures which are impossible to verify.
