Privilege 45 for offshore cruising?Hi everyone, no experience at all with multihulls but I'm toying with the idea of considering seriously a Privilege 45 (1995 model). Does anyone have any experience with them in the context of blue water cruising? There seem to be a bunch of articles suggesting that cats slam worryingly during passages, how does the P45 score in that regard? Other comments about its suitability for this type of use? Any known weak areas that I should pay attention to while inspecting the boat? Any other cat in the same price bracket and size that you think may be more suitable? I'm just starting the investigation on the Privilege because I think I prefer the layout more, but there may be more important considerations to weigh in. I thought it was interesting that the stove on all Privileges that I looked at, were not gimbaled! Is that common on cats? Obviously they don't heal, but what about passage making in heavy seas? Is single-handing possible, and docking with just the wife assisting? Average annual maintenance costs when cruising (assuming no deferred maintenance) for a cat of that size? How limiting is your cat when mooring, and do you typically have to pay extra because of beam (how much roughly)? There are some rumors going around the monohull community that cats rock weirdly, making some people very seasick, is there any truth there or is it just old wife's tales? Last but not least, any recommendations on how to build skills for transiting from monohulls to cats (i.e. handling differences, heavy weather tactics, etc..)? I'm not very experienced in monohulls either anyway. Many thanks guys, and apologies for being all over the place with these questions. I've never sailed a cat, so MHO may be worthless, but I have done some reading. 1) Slamming: cats can, depending on the hight of the bridge. Just slow down. Since a cat can't heel to release energy, it's converted to speed. When you can't stand there because it's accelerating from 10 to 20 it's time to reef. Big cat sailing in a gale-Awesome waves, and sail control.avi - YouTube 2) gimbaled stoves: You'll also won't find cup holders. Unnecessary. MULTIHULLS: 1995 Privilege 45' Catamaran For Sale: VELERO - YouTube 3) Maintenance. A x length cat has 1.5 times the storeage of a x length mono. So I assume the maintenance is also 1.5 the corresponding mono. Docking is a different matter, you take up two slips or must be on the end. 4) Cats don't rock. Sounds like "land sickness" in "Water World." 5) Handling. Cats come in 3 variations, 1-2 wheels rear outside (Priv45, good visibility to dock, wetter steering.) Inside cabin and outside, not so much. I assume you get use to it, like changing from a sports car to a RV. I suggest renting out one for a trip or day sale before deciding mono/cat. I've had a PRIVILEGE 39 1991 for the last few years. I used to take it out day sailing out of Brunswick Ga when I first got it to get experience. Best wind was 25 knots solo, it does great and is manageable. The boat is easy to sail and control. I brought it around from Punta Gorda, Fl to Jacksonville last month. I wanted to get through the Keys by a Friday afternoon and the seas were 8-10 ft. NEVER again will l push the boat motoring into those or bigger seas. It sounds like a sledge hammer on the bottom. I have a hatch in the cabin that goes down in case the boat ever capsized and I found that is NOT watertight. Another thing added to my list to fix. I've done one bottom painting and the boat is in pretty good shape. I found a surplus hatch a couple of years ago and we are replacing those one at a time, putting in solar vent fans etc. The boat is easy to sail and has a decent reputation about being able to take it. I looked at some of EXIT ONLY's videos on their circumnavigation before I bought this boat. Dave can probably answer any questions you have. Thanks a lot guys, very helpful. biggest drawback to me on the 45 style is the lack of vis from the saloon. deal breaker for me. not only for living on the hook but moving in nasty weather, i can drive from the saloon w/AP remote. welljim said: no experience at all with multihulls but I'm toying with the idea of considering seriously a Privilege 45 (1995 model). Click to expand... We sailed our mono (Moody 46) about 27,000nm from 2008 to summer 2011. We changed to a Lagoon 440 last summer and have put about 3,800nm on her including 1,500nm to weather. I looked at the Privilege and they are nice well built boats. In terms of being an "offshore" boat people read way too much into that. These production cats are all built a bit on the cheap side but are all worthy of crossing oceans, in fact they all do. Passagemaking is more about how you manage the weather and seas, i.e., how you sail. The boat will rarely be the weak link. This, all assuming you are not sailing high latitudes, that's a different animal (and boat). Every boat of course has pro/con. I like the Lagoon for the inside vis as at night and in bad weather I am comfortable inside (we have a steering and nav station inside). No different from being in the pilot house of a motor vessel other then I have to go out every few hours to check sail/rig for any issue. The high boom is pretty much a non-issue and allows for great sailing from the viewpoint of the flybridge. I love it! Bottom line, if you found a Privilege you like for the right price buy it. For live-aboard the cat's are very hard to beat. The Privilege is a bit more expensive then many but the wood-work shows it. Other production cats in that size to look at are the Lagoons, Leopards (Robertson and Caine), and the Anteries (or older PDQ), and Manta's. Avoid those out of charter unless you are prepared to do a major re-fit. Any of these cats (assuming you have done survey etc.) will take you around the globe via the normal trade wind routes safer and faster then most cruising mono's, and you will be the one not rolling at anchor! I own a 1995 Privilege 45 that I purchased two years ago. I've done a number of projects on her and am quite intimate with the systems, design and construction. I can tell you that, having looked at and sailed quite a few cats before purchasing the P45, IMHO the Privilege line is one of the best built production boats on the water. They are a very stable platform while underway or at anchor. I'd be happy to talk with you about what I've learned since owning this boat if you'd like to forward your contact information. Cats are almost always better at anchor but there is a particular set of wind wave conditions that can produce a small but rapid pitch roll movement that is quite disconcerting. It is almost always possible to 'tune' this out by taking a line from the stern to the anchor chain releasing the bridle from the opposite side and winching in on the line untill you are head to the swell. How much is a 45 foot catamaran? 5 Great Options.- Post author By Richard

Quick answer is $300,000 to $600,000. But you could also pay as much as $1 million for a fully loaded catamaran like La Vagabonde’s brand new Outremer 45 or as little as $150,000 for a late 1990’s Prout 45 or Leopard 45. These prices are all considering you are asking about a catamaran in reasonable condition and with appropriate cruising equipment. Project catamarans could end up costing much less initially although very likely much more eventually as typically you pay a premium in sailing for the “refit experience.” The upside is a long escape working in a boatyard that allows you to escape from your wife and children if that is your goal. We do not recommend the approach and this website while offering a wide selection of catamarans prefers to advertise that are in good condition at great prices to our visitors. Another budget aspect to consider is maintenance costs of a 45 foot catamaran. Here the typical assessment is you spend 10% of a catamaran’s value yearly to keep her in good condition at a safe mooring and with proper reserves for depreciation costs. We answer this question here because oddly the 45 foot number is a common online search and common question we receive. The number 45 has long history in sailing as in the old days of monohull sailboats, the ideal cruiser was thought of as a 45 foot center cockpit. Technology has evolved and proved that two hulls are superior to one yet the 45 feet in length is a sensible universal constant. The reason? Certainly a 45 foot catamaran features a dramatic increase in interior volume as compared to old technology. We suspect that the 45 foot ideal length is more determined by cruising speed and comfort in a wide variety of offshore conditions as well as the size at which length is not a limitation in terms of docking or maneuvering requiring additional crew. To further provide specifics on your options for a 45 foot catamaran please see example models below. 1. Lagoon 450The highest volume 45 foot model in production currently. New style design with large accommodations, wide beam, and tall mainsail. Comes in flybridge and sport version with different helm configurations. This design is an evolution of the Lagoon 440. Prices range from $400,000 to $700,000 from an old charter 2011 model to a brand new owner’s version. See our Lagoon 450 specifications and a list current example for sale. 2. Leopard 45The classic Leopard 45 was built from 1997 to 2001 and should not be confused with the new version of the model by the same name. These are affordable ex charter catamarans with old school builds. Watch out for wet balsa coring like on any 20 year old cored hull catamaran. Prices range from $200,000 to $250,000. See our Leopard 45 page for more specifications and options currently for sale . 3. Prout 45The Prout 45 model is the oldest fashioned model on this list and least expensive coming in at $150,000 to $250,000. These feature a cutter rig with two headsails and a very aftmost main mast. This headsail powered sailplan is very unusual for catamarans options at this size range. Please see our specifications for more information and for sale page for current examples for sale . 4. Outremer 45Made famous by Outremer’s special sale of an example to La Vagabonde stars. While at a base price it may be $700,000 when fully outfitted this boat nears $1 million USD. Performance oriented design with daggerboards and outboard helms with tillers. With the pricing and performance focus, this is a less common design. 5. Privilege 45Lying somewhere between the classic Prout 45 and middle aged Leopard 45, this older Privilege design ranges in price from $150,000 to $250,000. These were high end charter boats in their day with a very good reputation for build quality, performance, and interior fit / finish. See our Privilege specifications and examples for sale . Privilège Catamarans were launched back in the eighties by Philippe Jeantot (twice world champion in single-handed sailing and founder of the Vendee Globe) and René Bernard through the Jeantot Marine Shipyard in Les Sables d’Olonne. In 1996, the shipyard was sold to a new owner (La Groupe SGGR) and was renamed Alliaura Marine. Privilege Marine Shipyard, controlled by Gilles Wagner became the new owners from 2012 until Hanse Yachts bought the Privilege brand, moulds and shipyard in 2017. In 2022, Hanse announced that they would be selling their shareholding. Hanse have launched 3 designs: the Signature 510, the Signature 580 and the Signature 650. They continue to build the Series 740 (the flagship) from Privilege Marine days. Marc Lombard got involved with the brand back in 1987 and has been heavily involved with the designs since that time. Privilege are famous for producing high quality cruising catamarans: the focus is on quality rather than quantity. One of the key design features over the years has been the large owner’s suite located into the forward nacelle. As well as creating more living space, this structure provides buoyancy in heavy seas and stiffness to the whole structure. These strong cats ae known for their stability and seaworthiness. The build quality and finishing of a Privilege is a step above the competition, and this is reflected in their strong resale values. Elevated helm station is on the port side with easy access to lines and winches. 24 Privilege 585s were produced from 2002 through to 2006, they are highly sought after in the second hand catamaran market. Pretty decent sailing performance and huge amounts of living space. On Zatara is family of 6 from Texas who are sailing around the world. The replacement for the 37. The 465’s replacement, designed by Mac Lombard. Launched in 2004, the 745 became the new flagship of the range. A big seaworthy flybridge cat. Not only is it an ideal facility for building and launching its premium line of catamarans but it is also the departure point of the famous Vendée Globe solo around the world race. A NAUTICAL CONSCIOUSNESS LES SABLES D’OLONNE - THE SANDS OF OLONNELes Sables-d’Olonne has a nautical consciousness that dates back to our first connection with the sea. During the Roman Empire it was an important crossroads thanks to its harbor, «Le Havre d’Olonne». Famous as the leading cod fishing harbor into the 17 th century, the «Belle Epoque» for Les Sables-d’Olonne really began in the early 1800s. The rising popularity of «ocean bathing» brought sophistication in the form of resort hotels, casinos, cafes and beach front restaurants. The same ambiance that first attracted the aristocracy and artistic class is awake and flourishing today. Walk the beach front rambla and you will feel it for yourself. Today, Les Sables-d’Olonne is famous for being the home of the Vendée Globe single-handed, non-stop, yacht race around the world and Privilège has played an important role from the very beginning. EVEREST OF THE SEA THE VENDÉE GLOBEEvery 4 years , the world’s top solo sailors set out from Les Sables-d’Olonne to compete in something so mad, so daring and so epic that only a handful of sailors have ever summoned the courage to attempt it – sail around the world alone. They sail night and day without stopping, without assistance and without seeing another single human. Since the first race in 1989, 167 sailors have competed while only 88 have crossed the finish line. It is no wonder it is often called the “Everest of the sea”. The popularity of this event cannot be exaggerated; over 2 million people visited the Vendée Globe pavilion during the start of the last race, in 2016, and the sailors themselves are celebrities. The race was founded by Phillipe Jeantot . Jeantot was a two-time winner of the BOC Challenge that was also a solo around the world race (now called the Velux 5 Oceans Race). The difference was the BOC was sailed in 4 stages and Jeantot imagined a non-stop race that would become what it is, in fact, today: the ultimate challenge for single-handed sailors. Phillipe Jeantot competed and finished fourth in the first Vendée Globe. But more important to us was that he also founded something equally notable: Privilège . WHERE YOUR YACHT IS BUILT MATTERSPhilipe Jeantot built his first Privilège in 1985 based on his remarkable offshore sailing achievements. This new catamaran was built for cruising with his family, and security and comfort mattered as much as sailing ability. With the help of renowned naval architect, Marc Lombard, Privilège has steered a very different course from most other French builders who have come to dominate the growing catamaran segment. Privilège also predicted the shrinking popularity of premium monohulls in favor of catamarans and has succeeded in establishing a bespoke series of yachts that meet the highest possible expectation. Intelligent design and outstanding craftsmanship are a given, but what makes Privilège the single best sailing catamaran today has much to do with where it is built. Our Port Olona facilities share land and sea with many of the world’s most accomplished sailors. Everything that matters in the world of sailing is happening here and has a direct influence on the yachts we launch. Welcome to Port Olona in Les Sables-d’Olonne: the home of the Vendée Globe , the home of Privilège . STAY CONNECTED +1 613-981-1740CatamaranReviews.comOutremer 45 catamaran. Outremer strives to build fast-cruising catamarans while also not compromising on safety and comfort. First launched in 2015 and still in production, Outremer 45 is designed for sustained offshore cruising for extended periods of time – much like its predecessors Outremer 51 and Outremer 5X . Table of Contents DESIGN – INTERIOR AND EXTERIORThe Outremer 45 is a product of architecture by Barreau-Neuman, style by Partick Le Quement and interior design by Darnet Design. Outremer offers different options to the owners to truly customize the look of the interior according to their wishes. One such option is teak wood finishing, which gives Outremer 45 a gorgeous look. The cockpit of the Outremer 45 is accessed via two big steps and built asymmetrically. It is wide and spacious and protected by a rigid bimini and canvases stretched to each of its sides. It comes with a built-in table and L-shaped bench, which, along with an opposing bench, can comfortably accommodate up to 8 people. The cockpit table is convertible and can be transformed into a berth if needed. The seats also have storage lockers underneath them. The cockpit is at level with the saloon and is accessed via a sliding glass door. The galley has access directly into the cockpit, so serving food and drinks is easy and efficient. To aft is a single, raised helm station on the coachroof, which is accessed via three steps. It has a wheel to port and is complete with the engine control and mainsail halyard. All the lines for the mainsail and self-tacking jib are controlled from the helm, allowing shorthand sailing. The visibility from the helm station is excellent, and all four corners of the catamaran can be seen from the station, which allows for safe maneuvering. Outremer 45 also offers carbon-fiber tiller and a space-pod chair to experience steering of a different kind. The side decks of Outremer 45 are wide and well-protected by grab rails and toe rails. The Outremer 45 also features daggerboards that optimize its performance for better upwind and downwind sailing. The lockers along the side decks are deep and spacious enough to not only store all the sails and ropes but any other equipment such as kayaks that a family might want to carry along. The foredeck is long yet narrow and has no seating available, with space was taken over by two long trampolines. This allows the catamaran to cut back on its weight and offers exceptional hydro-dynamic performance – something also achieved by placing the bow length forward of the mast. Movement from the cockpit to saloon and vice versa is easy and smooth. Inside the saloon, the large slanting windows give a complete 350-degree view of the world outside. This, along with multiple opening hatches and portholes inside the saloon, also makes the saloon bright and well-ventilated. The settee, facing aft, is comfortable and large and is compounded by an additional bench stowed away under the table. Altogether, up to 8 people can be seated inside the saloon around the built-in table. The table can also telescopes down to become a berth. The galley on the Outremer 45 is L-shaped and ergonomic. It is also stylish, with a sleek countertop and stainless steel sink. It offers a 3-burner stove, which is rather compact, and also has a refrigerator on the opposite side. The galley also features ample space for storage in the form of a pantry with sliding drawers. The navigation station faces forward and takes advantage of the panoramic view offered by the windows to provide a great view while on watch. The station itself is well-equipped, and the desk is spacious enough for charts or a laptop to be placed. ACCOMMODATIONSThe Outremer 45 offers two different versions – a 3-cabin layout with the entire starboard dedicated to the owner and a 4-cabin layout, which has an additional cabin in the starboard hull. The owner’s version has a large 1.6 x 2.0 meters double berth in the cabin but no access around the berth. There is storage and wardrobe space to the side, and the cabin is secured with a sliding door. The corridor beyond has ample storage space in the form of cupboards and shelves. The forward section has a large bathroom and a separate shower. The cabin has good air circulation and is also bright with a lot of light filtering through its many windows. There are two cabins to port in the guest hull with the aft cabin symmetrical to the owner’s cabin. The key feature of the aft cabin is the large, fixed, rectangular porthole, which gives a great view of the outside. The forward cabin is slightly smaller than the aft cabin and has a smaller berth. The shared bathroom in the corridor is compact yet functional with a sink, head, and shower. ENGINE ROOMSOutremer 45 is powered by two Volvo 30 HP diesel engines that can acquire a top speed of 8.5 knots. The engines are accessible from outside, through a deck hatch located on the transom. TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS The overall length of Outremer 45 is 14.62 meters while the draft is 2.15 meters. The maximum beam of 45 is 7.1 meters, and a maximum displacement is 11,100 kg. PRICE RANGEThe price of Outremer 45 ranges from $700,000 to $750,000. In conclusion, Outremer 45 is an above-average Outremer built with a focus on improved performance and increased speed. It is sturdy and durable yet also easy to manage with a small crew, making it ideal for a family seeking to take multiple trips around the world.
