Cruise embarkation day guide: How to start your sailing off smoothly

Portrait of Nathan Diller

  • Cruise lines typically notify guests via email or their app that they can check in and choose from several arrival times.
  • Once on board, the first thing to do is go to your muster station, a designated meeting point for guests and crew in the event of an emergency.
  • Staterooms on major cruise lines are typically available around 1 p.m. after crew members finish turning them over from the previous sailing.

When Mike Smith takes a cruise , he doesn’t waste any time. Cabins often aren’t ready for guests until early afternoon, so the 35-year-old brings a swimsuit in his backpack and changes in one of the public bathrooms after boarding. Then he grabs a drink and sits by the pool.

“I really want to use my two hours to relax, enjoy,” said Smith, who teaches American Sign Language and makes travel content on his Instagram account . “I don't want to have to idly walk around and wait for my luggage.”

While Smith – who has taken nearly 10 cruises just in the past two years – has his embarkation day routine down, first-time passengers may find themselves wondering what parts of the ship are open, when their luggage will arrive and more.

Here’s what to expect.

How do I prepare for cruise embarkation day?

Smith starts getting ready to board well before his departure date.

Cruise lines typically notify guests via email or their app that they can check in and choose from several arrival times. Smith said he tries to get the “earliest boarding time possible.”

“I'll try my very best to do it that day when they (say) you can,” he said. Cruise lines encourage guests to check in ahead of time.

“Due to government regulations requiring cruise lines to submit final departure manifests at least 60 minutes prior to sailing, guests are requested to complete check-in no later than 3 days prior to their cruise,” Royal Caribbean International said on its website , for example. “If you do not complete check-in 3 days prior, you will be required to complete this process at the pier at least two hours prior to the published sailing time.”

Smith also likes to look over the deck plans for the ship, which are usually available online, to familiarize himself with the layout.

“Otherwise, sometimes day one becomes, like, walking to one end of the ship and going, ‘Oh, wait, it's not over here, it's over there,’ and then turning around,” he said. “And I think mitigating any kind of frustration is always a good way to start a cruise.”

What happens on cruise embarkation day?

At the port, passengers can check luggage with a porter and go through security before getting on the ship.

Once on board, Smith said the “first, first, first, first” thing he does is go to his muster station, a designated meeting point for guests and crew in the event of an emergency. Muster drills used to be more involved , but the process can usually now be completed by watching a safety video and checking in at the assigned locale. All guests must do so before the ship sets sail.

“I think a lot of people, especially people who haven’t cruised in a long time, they might have my childhood trauma, which was putting on that life jacket and standing outside by the lifeboats and listening to the horn blow and going through all those instructions,” he said. “And every cruise I've been on now for the past two years, everything's in the app.”

In Smith’s experience, staterooms on major cruise lines are typically available around 1 p.m. after crew members finish turning them over from the previous sailing.

Checked luggage is left outside guests’ cabins, but delivery times can vary. Smith tries to bring enough items in his backpack – which he carries with him during boarding – that he doesn’t need anything from his suitcase until the evening.

Once his bags arrive, he “1000%” unpacks everything that day. “I like to do it; my boyfriend is adamant about it,” he said. “He's the driving force.”

Once the suitcases are empty, they slide them under the bed, which can create some extra room for guests in the sometimes tight quarters of cruise cabins.

What’s open on embarkation day?

Smith has found that many onboard amenities are accessible to guests on embarkation day.

But there is one he likes to avoid just after boarding: the buffet. Many passengers tend to go straight there, causing it to get packed.

He prefers to eat before getting on the ship, so he doesn't have to worry about grabbing food right away.

Other venues, like specialty restaurants, may also not be open until dinner on the first day of a cruise.

From cell service to Wi-Fi: How to stay connected on a cruise ship

And while large cruise ships often have a range of retail stores, they generally aren’t open while in port. Smith recommended that guests bring items like sunscreen and any medications they might need in case the shops are closed or they don’t have what they’re looking for.

He also uses time after embarkation to make reservations for specialty dining and peruse the entertainment schedule, making notes on his phone of the activities and shows he and his boyfriend want to attend.

“And then I just put whatever we're doing there so we don't have to really think about anything because the last thing I really want to do on vacation is think a lot,” Smith said.

BOAT rounds up the most notable yachting news stories from the past 12 months, ranging from triumphant launches to tragic events.

Oceanco's 127m sailing yacht Y721 revealed

The most read news story in 2021 was the reveal of the 127m sailing yacht reportedly commissioned by Amazon boss Jeff Bezos . Known as Y721, the yacht currently underway at Oceanco in the Netherlands is set to become the biggest sailing yacht in the world when delivered. Due for delivery in 2022, the yacht features a black hull and classic exterior lines and is set to be a three-masted schooner complete with a bowsprit.

Gaddafi's abandoned superyacht to become hydrogen-powered pioneer

In second place was the news that the superyacht once belonging to Muammar Gaddafi , known under his ownership as Che Guevara , will be rebuilt into a zero-emission, hydrogen-powered yacht named Hydrogen Viking. The Sunseeker Predator 95 is being redesigned into the world’s first zero-emission, high-speed luxury yacht by Norwegian studio Coase Design.

The best photos of 142m Lürssen superyacht Nord

In third place was a gallery of the best images of 142m Lürssen superyacht Nord , which became the 10th largest yacht when it was launched earlier this year. Previously known as Opus, Nord was one of the largest and most private yachts finished in 2021 and was especially popular with BOAT's online audiences.

Royal Huisman's 58.5m superyacht PHI pictured on maiden voyage

Next up was Royal Huisman’s 58.5m superyacht PHI, which was launched and delivered in 2021 . Delivered alongside a dedicated support vessel named PHI Phantom , PHI was designed by Cor D Rover with an interior penned by Lawson Robb. Following delivery, PHI was spotted on its maiden voyage in London where it will remain for the winter season.

140 metre Lloyd Werft superyacht Solaris pictured in Gibraltar

In fifth place was the 140m delivery and maiden voyage of the 140 metre superyacht Solaris – the largest superyacht to launch in 2021. Designed by Australian designer Marc Newson , Solaris hit the water for the first time at German yard Lloyd Werft and was a highly secretive project since it began construction.

Iconic Perini Navi sailing yacht Malizia runs aground

In sixth place was the news that the iconic 24.2 metre Perini Navi sailing yacht Malizia had run aground off the island of Stromboli . The yacht, which was originally built for Prince Rainier III of Monaco, was understood to be on charter at the time of the incident but thankfully no injuries were reported.

Inside the design journey of the 222m private residence yacht Somnio

The new private residence project Somnio caused a stir when it was revealed this year . The 222m project, which will be built at Vard for a 2024 launch, features interior design penned by Winch Design . Packed with the “facilities, amenities and itinerary you would expect from a luxury cruise liner,” Somnio is set to feature a 10,000 wine bottle den, various restaurants and a massive beach club.

On board Rafael Nadal's Sunreef 80 Power yacht Great White

The 24 metre catamaran Great White belonging to tennis superstar Rafael Nadal was showcased at this year’s 2021 Monaco Yacht Show and was especially popular with BI.com readers. BOAT’s video tour on board the superyacht took viewers inside the interior, which features accommodation for 12 guests and four crew members.

142m superyacht Nord returns to Lürssen

The 142m Lürssen superyacht Nord returned to its home yard in June after spending the previous months exploring the Spanish coast and Caribbean. Designed by studio Nuvolari Lenard, Nord features a sports and diving centre on the lower deck, as well as a fleet of tenders and two superyacht helipads.

95m Lürssen superyacht Kismet arrives in London

In October, the legendary 95m Lürssen superyacht Kismet arrived in London and was spotted moored in Canary Wharf. Designed by Espen Øino with interiors by Reymond Langton, Kismet is owned by Shahid Khan, who also owns the Fulham football club in the UK and the Jacksonville Jaguars in the US. Sailing through Houthi Red Sea hotspot now is ‘insane’, says shipowner

Owners of feeder container ships shun higher rates saying it is just too dangerous

Conbulk Shipmanagement has joined the container shipowners that have stopped sending ships to the Red Sea, according to its chief executive Dimitris Dalakouras.

yachting news

“We have stopped trading there. This will have very bad consequences in general if everybody stops, to the local economy, to the local economic entities, including the Houthis themselves,” he told the Capital Link forum in London today.

The move follows repeated attacks on one of the Greek owner’s vessels, the 2,490-teu container ship Groton (built 2002), which was hit by a missile on 3 August while trading into the region and targeted again early this month.

The Liberian-flag vessel — was is chartered to CMA CGM and insured by the Swedish Club — was one of three Conbulk vessels trading to the region.

Dalakouras said: “Until our incident, the Houthis were avoiding engaging with vessels trading on regional trade. They were actually targeting mostly the vessels trading from the Pacific coast to the Mediterranean.

“It mainly has to do with the crew safety. Once the crew is in danger, all the discussion stops,” he said.

The move brings Conbulk into line with other small boxship tonnage providers that have also refused to allow vessels to trade to the region.

MPC Container Ships chief executive Constantin Baack said: “We discontinued trading immediately because the safety of the crews is of utmost importance. And earning a few dollars more doesn’t justify any of this.

“So we were in quite a lot of discussions with some of our charters because the charterparties obviously included clauses that did not prevent them from trading through the Red Sea.

yachting news

“We will only continue once there is safety for the crew and I think that is the overriding principle from our standpoint.”

Leonhardt & Blumberg managing director Torben Kolln agreed that the risks were too great to justify higher charter rates.

He said: “You can argue that the crew can take their own risk, but we have seen that there is also an environmental risk and who is willing to take that?

“So for us, it is absolutely no good to go to Red Sea and also now we extended the area to the Gulf of Aden. It is an enormous area. Every week, every second week we hear terrible things.

“I cannot understand how you can still go there. It is insane actually,” Kolln said.

Euroseas chief financial officer Anastasios Aslidis said his company was putting in charter clauses that avoided going to the Red Sea “by and large”.

Cut to the Ireland native yelling at Gary, "Guess what? We have a f--king job to do and I'm not f--king carrying this season on my own, you f--king pr--k!"

But luckily for Daisy, the preview teases her quickly moving on with new Deckhand Keith Allen , who tells Gary, "Daisy would make a very good wife. No?"

As for Gary's response, he bursts out laughing at the crewmember's declaration.

However, Daisy feels the same about Keith and tells him, "You're the kind of person I've never met before."

And when it comes to this season's charter guests, the yachties have too much of a good time with one group on shore.

After a night out, Captain Glenn Shephard warns the team, "You guys went out with some guests, I set some ground rules. Two drinks maximum. You knew the rules, you broke the f--king rules, and now you're here getting upset."

Check out the trailer above for a preview of all the drama to come. And keep reading to meet new yachties Chef Cloyce Martin , Chief Engineer Davide Morosi , Stews Diana Cruz and Danni Warren and Deckhand Emma Crouch .

Below Deck Sailing Yacht premieres Monday, Oct. 7, at 9 p.m.   on Bravo. Episodes will be available to stream next day on Peacock.

Captain Glenn Shephard

Capt. Glenn and his expert crew set sail on Parsifal III to the luxury party capital of the world, Ibiza. While Ibiza is known for its sunny day parties and crystal-clear coast, it’s stormy waters ahead for the crew as they navigate blossoming boatmances, competitive co-workers and tense personal dynamics, all while trying to raise the bar every charter.

Chief Stew Daisy Kelliher

After a distracting love triangle last season that took her focus away from work, Daisy is ready to take the reins back in the interior department with a new sense of energy and determination. However, plans for a stress-free charter season are threatened when her stews question her leadership.

First Mate Gary King

On deck, Gary attempts to keep his team motivated as one crew member struggles to learn the ropes.

Chef Cloyce Martin

In the galley, Chef Cloyce charms the crew and guests but at only 22, he may be too inexperienced to meet the demands of the high-maintenance charter guests.

‘Below Deck Sailing Yacht’ Is Returning for Season 5 After Gary King’s Sexual Misconduct Scandal

Below Deck Sailing Yacht Is Returning for Season 5 After Gary King Scandal

Below Deck Sailing Yacht is coming back for season 5 after Gary King’s sexual misconduct scandal.

Bravo announced on Monday, September 16, that the next season reunites Captain Glenn Shephard , chief stew Daisy Kelliher and Gary as they spend their charter season in Ibiza. The rest of the cast includes chef Cloyce Martin , chef engineer Davide Morosi , stews Diana Cruz , Danni Warren and deckhands Keith Allen and Emma Crouch .

The upcoming installment comes more than one year after Below Deck Sailing Yacht wrapped up its fourth season on Bravo in July 2023.

Gary’s future as a cast member has been up in the air, however, since a production assistant from the show accused him of making unwanted advances while filming season 4.

In a Rolling Stone exposé, which was published in October 2023, Samantha Suarez and other former employees, who asked to remain anonymous, accused Bravo of allegedly helping cover up Gary’s inappropriate behavior.

“It was insane. There were multiple incidents of sexual harassment in front of multiple producers after this person had been given verbal warnings multiple times,” one of the accusers alleged. “I had to promote and make this guy who just assaulted someone look awesome. That was my job, to make this person look cool, capable and exciting.”

Samantha recalled being asked to look after Gary when he allegedly got drunk. Once filming wrapped, Samantha remained with Gary in his hotel room before he tried to stop her from leaving by pressing himself against her. Samantha alleged that Gary refused to let her leave until she started to fight back.

According to Samantha, she alerted producers about the incident , who told Gary to sleep on the boat on days when the crew wasn’t filming as a way to keep him out of the hotel.

Bravo addressed the allegations in a statement to Rolling Stone , saying, “Bravo is committed to maintaining a safe and respectful workplace for cast and crew on our reality shows. We require our third-party production companies to have appropriate workplace policies and trainings in place and a clear process on how to report concerns. The concerns Ms. Suarez raised in July 2022 were investigated at that time and action was taken based on the findings.”

Gary has maintained his innocence since news broke about the claim. “I know [that I did nothing wrong], and I know the truth but it still hurts when people will tell lies to bring you down,” he replied to a fan via Instagram one month later.

German warships visit the Philippines amid its South China Sea clashes after angering Beijing by sailing through the Taiwan Strait

Two German Navy ships are visiting the Philippines for the first time in over 20 years.

The port call comes amid clashes between Chinese and Philippines vessels in the South China Sea.

The German ships just transited the Taiwan Strait, which sparked anger in China.

Two German warships are visiting the Philippines for the first time in over 20 years after making a notable transit through the Taiwan Strait .

The port call, which Germany said is a reaffirmation of its commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific region and rules-based international order, rhetoric commonly used by the US, as well as a testament to its defense cooperation with the Philippines, is set against the backdrop of flaring tensions between China and the Philippines due to disputes in the South China Sea.

The vessels, the first-in-class frigate Baden-Württemberg and the Berlin-class supply ship Frankfurt am Main, arrived in Manila on Monday and will remain in port until Thursday.

Per Andreas Pfaffernoschke, the German ambassador to the Philippines, the visit speaks to the ongoing cooperation between the two nations and "underscores how politically significant the Indo-Pacific region has become for Germany."

In an opinion piece for The Philippine Star , Pfaffernoschke noted that Germany's visit also showcases its commitment to upholding international law and freedom of navigation, coming at a time "when the international rules-based order in the South China Sea is constantly being challenged."

Pfaffernoschke added that recent incidents between China and the Philippines have raised concerns about security and stability in the area.

Clashes between China and the Philippines in the South China Sea have been escalating for months as China unjustly claims sovereignty over a majority of the South China Sea, defying international law while increasing efforts to assert its authority in the area .

The Philippines says that China is engaging in aggressive behavior within its exclusive economic zone. Chinese vessels have been documented ramming and harassing Philippine vessels, as well as blocking them from sailing through Philippine waters.

The port call by the German warships also comes at a particularly tense moment between Berlin and Beijing. While traveling to Manila, the Baden-Württemberg and Frankfurt am Main transited the Taiwan Strait , sparking backlash from China.

Unlike most countries that acknowledge that the strait is an international waterway open for freedom of navigation, China claims the strait as its waters.

"The waters of the Taiwan Strait, from both shores toward the middle of the Strait, are China's internal waters, then territorial sea, then contiguous zone, and then exclusive economic zone," Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Mao Ning said last week, noting that countries who navigate the strait should do it in accordance with Chinese and international laws.

When the Baden-Württemberg and Frankfurt am Main sailed through the strait last week, German Defense Ministry Boris Pistorius asserted this example of innocent passage was reasonable. "International waters are international waters," he said . "It's the shortest and, given the weather conditions, the safest route. So we are passing through."

In a regular press conference last Friday, Mao said China "firmly" opposes " any act of provocation under the pretext of freedom of navigation that harms China's sovereignty and security."

The People's Liberation Army's Eastern Theater Command took things further, saying "the German side's behavior increases security risks and sends the wrong signal," while the Chinese embassy in Berlin said that "the question of Taiwan is not a matter of 'freedom of navigation,' but of China's sovereignty and territorial integrity."

Divers Discover the Long-Lost Wreckage of a Passenger Steamship That Sank in a Hit-and-Run in 1856

“Le Lyonnais” descended into the depths off the coast of Massachusetts after colliding with the “Adriatic,” a sailing vessel that left the floundering steamship to fend for itself

Sarah Kuta

Daily Correspondent

Underwater diver wearing a helmet shining a light on bottom of ocean floor

On November 2, 1856, the passenger steamship Le Lyonnais was sailing off the coast of Massachusetts when it collided with a sailing vessel called the Adriatic .

The Adriatic suffered minor damage and continued on. Le Lyonnais , meanwhile, had a small hole in its hull. Crews tried to patch it, but they ultimately couldn’t stop water from pouring in. Three days later, Le Lyonnais sank beneath the surface. Just 16 of the vessel’s 132 passengers were rescued.

The exact location of Le Lyonnais’ final resting place in the Atlantic has been a mystery for the last 168 years—until now. In August, a team of shipwreck hunters discovered the vessel on the seafloor roughly 200 miles from New Bedford, Massachusetts.

Shipwreck hunter Eric Takakjian started looking for Le Lyonnais in the late 2000s, according to the Asbury Park Press ’ Dan Radel. In 2016, Jennifer Sellitti and Joe Mazraani, who own Atlantic Wreck Salvage, joined the search with their New Jersey-based dive vessel, the D/V Tenacious .

“I very quickly just became obsessed with this ship and her story,” Sellitti tells the  Boston Globe ’s Jeremy C. Fox. “And every little piece of information I uncovered was this sort of … unraveling of what really is an incredible story about this collision.”

The group took eight years to find Le Lyonnais , in part because historic newspaper articles suggested the ship sank on Nantucket Shoals. But the team found court documents and survivor accounts that suggested the ship actually sank farther out to sea on the Georges Banks.

In 2022 and 2023, the team began using side-scan sonar to study the seafloor. This helped them narrow the search area and identify a promising target. In August, they dove to the wreck and confirmed it was Le Lyonnais .

They knew they’d found the right ship because of several distinctive features, including the horizontal steam engine, the iron hull plates and part of the rigging system. The engine cylinder measured 57 inches, which matched Le Lyonnais ’ records.

“Those clues with the location, sonar data and measurements further solidified that we were diving the lost French liner,” Mazraani tells the Asbury Park Press .

Underwater equipment from shipwreck

The team members are keeping the exact location of the wreck a secret, but they did reveal that it’s buried in sand in deep water. They plan to return to the site in the future to continue documenting its artifacts.

Built in England in 1855 for Compagnie Franco-Americaine, Le Lyonnais had sails and a steam engine. The vessel, which transported passengers and cargo, set sail the following year.

The collision occurred as Le Lyonnais was making the return journey across the Atlantic from the United States to France. The Adriatic , meanwhile, was on its way from Maine to Georgia.

Historic illustration of a ship on choppy seas

After the accident, the crew aboard the Adriatic assumed Le Lyonnais was fit to continue on its course. The Adriatic headed to Gloucester, Massachusetts, for repairs, leaving the crew aboard Le Lyonnais to fend for themselves.

A few weeks after the collision, the Adriatic ’s captain, Jonathan Durham, said in a statement published in the  New York Times (then the New-York Daily Times ) that the crew “hailed the steamer, and requested them not to leave us, but received no answer.” The captain was later put on trial in France for the accident, per the Boston Globe .

Sellitti describes the wreck as a “hit-and-run” in a  forthcoming book she wrote about the ordeal.

“Being able to find this ship, I felt like I was giving closure to the people who suffered there,” Sellitti tells the  New York Times ’ Hank Sanders.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht Seaon 5 trailer teases a Daisy romance, less Gary, no Colin, major firing, and more

Finally, after months of waiting for Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 news, we have it, and it’s good.

Bravo released the highly anticipated trailer for the sailing show, along with a premiere date.

There’s so much to unpack in the first-look footage that it left us feeling like Season 5 just might be even more jaw-dropping than Season 4.

The last season fractured the friendships of Daisy Kelliher , Gary King, and Colin MacRae, who all helped make Below Deck Sailing Yacht a mega-hit show.

Colin isn’t back for another season, but Gary and Daisy are, with the past season impacting their working environment.

Aside from the Gary and Daisy drama, we see Captain Glenn Shephard, like never before, losing his s**t on the crew more than once for very good reasons.

The Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 trailer

Daisy is the focal point of the trailer, as it seems the powers that be are making her the star in the aftermath of the sexual misconduct scandal allegations against Gary.

The chief stew finds herself hooking up with a deckhand that could be more than just a boatmance.

It seems that the new chef is going to be a major problem on Season 5. Daisy and the chef butt heads when she refuses to serve his food because, well, it looks like crap.

The party vibe of Ibiza brings many challenges for Captain Glenn and his crew. Not only with unruly guests but also the crew crossing the line by partying with guests.

Captain Glenn sets ground rules for the crew, which are ignored, leading to him unleashing his fury on them. The captain even wakes up the crew at one point after a disastrous crew night out.

Other teasers include another near-boat crash for Parsifal III that makes it seem like Gary may be the one who saves the day. Speaking of Gary, he’s in the trailer, but there’s definitely less of him, and not a single Gary hook-up is featured.

What is featured is a fire, a bloody nose, plenty of drunk falls, and Captain Glenn firing someone. The way it’s set up, too, the teaser definitely wants us to think Captain Glenn fires Daisy or Gary.

When does Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 premiere?

Below Deck Sailing Yacht fans will have to tune into Season 5 to find out who Captain Glenn fires, as well as if Daisy what happens with Daisy’s budding romance.

The good news is that the sailing show is back in less than a month. Season 5 of Below Deck Sailing Yacht premieres on Monday, October 7 at 9/8c.

Below Deck Med Season 9 wraps on Monday, September 23, which means we are either getting a reunion or a Captain Sandy Yawn wedding special on Monday, September 30.

Are you ready for Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5?

Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 premieres on Monday October 7 at 9/8c. Seasons 1-4 are streaming on Peacock.

Finally, after months of waiting for Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 news, we have it, and it’s good. Bravo released the highly anticipated trailer for the sailing show, along with a premiere date. There’s so much to unpack in the first-look footage that it left us feeling like Season 5 just might be even
