The Italian government has seized a luxury superyacht worth an estimated £570m that is believed to be linked to Russian president Vladimir Putin .

The vessel was impounded as part of the EU’s sanctions against Russia for its unprovoked invasion of Ukraine , under which similar yachts belonging to Russian oligarchs have been confiscated.

The six-deck Scheherazade had been undergoing repairs in the port of Marina di Carrara in Tuscany since last September. Recent activity at the dockside suggested that the crew were preparing to put the yacht to sea, as calls grew for it to be included in the sanctions.

The Italian finance ministry said in a statement that the owner of the yacht had ties to “prominent elements of the Russian government”, without naming them. US officials have previously told The New York Times that the vessel could belong to Mr Putin, though there has been no official confirmation of this.

Supporters of the imprisoned Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny were also of the belief that the vessel belonged to the Russian president. In a report released in March , an organisation set up by Mr Navalny said it had evidence that the boat belonged to Mr Putin, as several crew members were drawn from Russia’s Federal Protective Service (FSO), which is tasked with protecting the president.

In March, the ship’s British captain, Guy Bennett-Pearce, denied that Mr Putin had ever owned or set foot on the Scheherezade . “I have never seen him. I have never met him,” he told the The New York Times .

Days later, Mr Bennett-Pearce said he had been left with “no choice” but to reveal the owner’s identity to the Italian police, adding: “I have no doubt in my mind whatsoever that this will clear the vessel of all negative rumours and speculations.”

Police boarded the yacht – which is over 450ft long and has two helicopter landing pads – late on Friday to execute the order, the government said.

Officials said they had struggled to identify the real owner of the boat, as it is registered in the Cayman Islands and was built by the German firm Lürssen. The yacht was delivered to its owner in 2020 and can host up to 18 guests and 40 crew, Reuters reported.

Italian authorities said the owner was not on any sanctions lists drawn up by Brussels since Mr Putin’s declaration of war on 24 February, although Rome has asked Brussels to rectify this.

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky, while addressing the Italian parliament in March, urged the government to impound the yacht as part of the EU’s efforts to put pressure on Mr Putin.

Italy confiscated yachts and villas worth over £770m in March and April from Russian billionaires with close ties to Mr Putin, in a bid to hurt Moscow financially.

Earlier in March, Italy seized a £530m megayacht owned by Russian billionaire Andrey Melnichenko, as oligarchs around the world scrambled to save their yachts and other luxury assets from western governments.

And in April the German authorities seized the world’s largest superyacht, Dilbar , sprawling over 512ft, which belonged to billionaire Alisher Usmanov before he transferred its ownership to his sister.

Vladimir Putin's $700M Superyacht Is Docked in Italy: Russian Opposition

A yacht worth an estimated $700 million, which is currently docked in Italy, may belong to Russian President Vladimir Putin , according to jailed Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny 's organization.

The Scheherazade , one of the world's largest superyachts whose owner has not been publicly named, is currently stationed in the Marina di Carrara port on Italy's west coast in Tuscany.

According to a video released on Monday by journalist Maria Pevchikh and activist Georgy Alburov—both of the Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK) set up by Navalny—the 459-foot ship is owned by Putin and its crew includes members of Russia's Federal Protective Service (FSO), who are tasked with protecting the Russian president.

The 15-minute video detailing the allegations was published online one day before Navalny, one of the most prominent and outspoken Putin critics, was found guilty of large-scale fraud and contempt by a Russian court and faces a further 13 years in jail.

Navalny, who alleged that he was poisoned by the Kremlin in 2020, is already serving a three-and-a-half year sentence over allegations he violated the terms of his suspended sentence following a 2014 conviction for money laundering.

The video, which has already been viewed nearly 2.5 million times on YouTube, discussed how Putin would be affected by the European Union's sanctions against Russia in the wake of the country's invasion of Ukraine if he owns property in the EU .

The clips then alleges that the Scheherazade , complete with a two helicopter decks, a cinema and a swimming pool, may actually belong to Putin after obtaining a crew list detailing who works on the luxury vessel.

Alburov noted that many of these crew members allegedly work for the FSO, the agency that "protects Putin and organizes his life." Some crew members are either listed outright as working for the FSO, or their addresses are identical to the headquarters of the FSO's Caucasus branch, said Alburov.

The foundation also said it had spoken to one of the crew members, who confirmed that the superyacht is owned by Putin.

The New York Times previously reported that Putin may own the vessel. The ship's captain, British national Guy Bennett-Pearce, denied the allegation and said the Russian president has never even been on the yacht.

"I have never seen him. I have never met him," he told The New York Times . Bennett-Pearce added that the yacht's owner is not on any sanctions list but did not rule out that whoever it is could be Russian.

Italian police and U.S. officials have already launched investigations into who owns the Scheherazade, but have so far failed to come up with any concrete conclusions.

As noted by Pevchikh, the yacht hasn't been seized yet because authorities have been unable to find its owner.

"With a very simple open source search we managed to identify at least ten FSO officers that are listed as personnel members of Scheherezade ," Pevchikh tweeted on Monday. "They are Russian state employees, military personnel, and they regularly travel to Italy as a group to work on the mysterious yacht.

"To sum up, a dozen of Vladimir Putin's personal guards and servants are constantly maintaining one of the world's largest yachts docked in an Italian port. We think that this is a solid enough proof that Scheherazade belongs to Putin himself and must be immediately seized."

On Tuesday, Navalny was found guilty of fraud and contempt charges, which he and his supporters say were fabricated in order to end his political ambitions, reported Reuters.

He was jailed last year after surviving a poison attack from a nerve agent, which he said was ordered by Moscow. The Kremlin has frequently denied attempting to assassinate one of Russia's most vocal critics of Putin.

Navalny is expected to be sentenced on Tuesday, March 22.

Scheherazade, one of the world's top 20 largest yachts, is moored off the west coast of Italy and is worth $700 million approximately. Alexei Navalny's Anti-Corruption Foundation posted a YouTube video on Monday, March 21, linking Russian President Vladimir Putin to the six-deck Scheherazade. The superyacht, named after a legendary Persian queen, has been moored in Marina di Carrara, Italy, since September 2020.

"Navalny's researchers say they were able to access a list of Scheherazade's crew members and that they discovered–using phone numbers and credit score data–that several are Russian nationals employed by Russia 's Federal Protective Service, a government agency that provides security to high-ranking Russian officials and state assets. One Scheherazade crew member also previously worked on the 270-foot-long Graceful yacht, which has also been linked to Putin , according to the 15-minute Navalny video," reports Forbes .

Inside the Scheherazade:

Pictures obtained by The Sun showcase the luxury and opulence of the superyacht. A worker who helped build it told the portal, "Every surface is marble or gold. There are countless swimming pools, a spa, a sauna, a theatre, ballrooms, a gym, and two helipads. It's like a mini-city. There is even a hospital, which makes sense when you hear rumors of Putin being terminally ill. It is hard to swallow the fact that the most incredible ship in the world is owned by a man intent on bombing civilians in Ukraine. And it is an unimaginable amount of wealth when the average Russian's salary is £5,000 a year, and people there are struggling to eat."

The 459-foot-long Scheherazade boasts a spa, beauty salon, swimming pool, dance floor, gym, and two helipads. It is also equipped with a movie theater, a self-leveling pool table, a five-meter aquarium, and the biggest TV on a yacht, stretching 4.5m across an entire wall. The security system of the yacht is capable of shooting down drones and is studded with satellite domes. Built by German ship maker Lurssen in 2020, the bathrooms are adorned with gold toilet roll holders and taps. The interior of the yacht has been designed by Zuretti Yacht Design, according to Super Yacht Fan .

The former crew member further told The Sun, "All over the world yachts owned by oligarchs are being seized but the Scheherazade is sitting there in plain sight in a marina in Italy. It just doesn't seem right." Tom Tugendhat, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, told the British newspaper, "Putin's pampered nautical palace was launched with cash stolen off the Russian people and now floats off the Italian Riviera, showing us all the action we should take."

The New York Times reported that Italian law enforcement had opened an inquiry into the yacht and had examined some of the ship's certification documents. Captain Bennett-Pearce said he had 'no choice' but to hand over documents revealing the owner's identity to the Italian authorities. "I have no doubt in my mind whatsoever that this will clear the vessel of all negative rumors and speculations," he wrote in a message to a reporter of the American daily newspaper.

Lo yacht più grande del mondo, ormeggiato in Italia a Marina di Carrara, lungo 140 metri e del valore stimato in circa 700 milioni di dollari non apparterebbe al presidente Putin, come invece aveva fatto intendere il New York Times.

Lo Scheherazade - così si chiama il mega yacht - è «al vaglio della polizia italiana». Il suo capitano, il britannico Guy Bennett-Pearce, ha riferito che gli inquirenti sono saliti a bordo venerdì scorso e ne hanno esaminato la documentazione ma The Italian Sea Group, la società di costruzione, smentisce che il proprietario sia il presidente russo: «In funzione della documentazione di cui dispone e a seguito di quanto emerso dai controlli effettuati dalle autorità competenti, lo yacht di 140 metri Scheherazade, attualmente in cantiere per attività di manutenzione, non è riconducibile alla proprietà del Presidente russo Vladimir Putin».

Chi è il proprietario

Ma allora di chi è questo gigante dei mari? Il proprietario sarebbe comunque un cliente russo ma il nome resta ancora un mistero. Su Vesselfinder, sito web che – unicamente a scopo informativo – traccia e fornisce la posizione delle imbarcazioni nel mondo attraverso il sistema AIS (sistema di identificazione automatica)  si legge che lo yacht è stato costruito nel 2020 e naviga attualmente sotto la bandiera delle Isole Cayman. 

Il proprietario registrato è Bielor Asset Ltd, società con sede nelle Isole Marshall.  «Alla data odierna - si legge ancora in un comunicato di The Italian Sea Group - è in essere soltanto un contratto con un cliente russo. In particolare, la Società deve ancora incassare  6 milioni di euro relativi al saldo consegna nave, prevista nei primi mesi del 2023. Si evidenzia comunque che il soggetto contraente non rientra tra quelli colpiti da sanzioni internazionali».

Dunque chiunque abbia la fortuna di poter navigare su questo gioiello non sarebbe uno degli oligarchi russi colpiti dalle sanzioni avviate in seguito al conflitto in Ucraina. Tanto che The Italian Sea Group «conferma che la produzione delle commesse in progress e le attività di refit proseguono senza alcun rallentamento, nonostante le sanzioni introdotte dall'Unione Europea nei confronti della Russia. Alla data odierna, nessun ordine è stato cancellato e non si è manifestato alcun ritardo nei pagamenti degli Stati di Avanzamento Lavori contrattuali in essere. Si rammenta che TISG lavora esclusivamente su commessa per armatori con il supporto di società di broker internazionali, con contratti che prevedono pagamenti anticipati relativi ai SAL, e in caso di inadempienza, è prevista in estrema ratio per il cliente la perdita degli acconti versati; nel merito, la proprietà della nave resterebbe di TISG, dando alla Società l'opportunità di rivendere immediatamente lo yacht e realizzare interessanti plusvalenze».

Com'è lo yacht

L'interno del yacht è progettato da Zuretti Yacht Design. È in grado di ospitare almeno 18 ospiti e un crew di 40. Secondo quanto si legge sul sito Superyachtfan ha una piattaforma di atterraggio per elicotteri, una piscina con copertura a scomparsa che si trasforma in una pista da ballo, la palestra attrezzata e gli infissi dorati nei bagni. Oltre a un cinema e diverse aree di intrattenimento. Ha anche un sistema di crash dei droni, che letteralmente schianta i droni dall'aria.

Il capitano della nave, Guy Bennett-Pearce, cittadino britannico, ha negato allo storico e prestigioso quotidiano di New York che Putin possedesse o fosse mai stato sullo yacht: «Non l'ho mai visto. Non l'ho mai incontrato». Ha aggiunto, in un’intervista telefonica dallo yacht, che il suo proprietario non era in nessuna lista di sanzioni. Non ha escluso che il proprietario potesse essere russo, ma non ha voluto fornire altri dettagli sulla sua identità, essendo vincolato a un accordo di riservatezza.

Drone Footage Shows Superyacht Under Investigation for Putin Links

US intelligence officials told the New York Times that they were investigating a superyacht docked in Italy for possible links to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The yacht, named Scheherazade, is docked at Marina di Carrara on the west coast of Italy.

The Italian Sea Group, which runs the port, said in a statement that the yacht was not associated with Putin.

“The Italian Sea Group, on the basis of the documentation in its possession and following the findings of the checks carried out by the relevant authorities, declares that the 140 meter yacht Scheherazade, currently in the shipyard for maintenance work, is not attributable to the property of Russian President Vladimir Putin,” the group said. A MYSTERIOUS superyacht worth £532million has been swarmed by Italian officials amid rumours it belongs to Vladimir Putin.

Authorities are demanding proof of ownership of the luxury vessel, Scheherazade, as they probe whether to seize it under sanctions imposed against Russia as the bloody war in Ukraine rages on.

The 459-foot superyacht - one of the most expensive in the world - is moored at the Italian Sea Group shipyard in Marina di Carrara and has been dubbed "Putin's yacht" by locals.

Since its launch in 2020, its ownership has remained a complete secret.

It reportedly boasts a swimming pool that converts into a dance floor, gold-plated fixtures, two helicopter decks and several satellite domes.

As authorities look to seize superyachts belonging to Russian oligarchs, the Scheherazade's captain Guy Bennett-Pearce confirmed Italian investigations boarded the vessel in a bid to uncover its true owner.

“They are looking hard. They are looking at every aspect,” he told the New York Times.

“This isn’t the local coppers coming down, these are men in dark suits."

He told the outlet he had "no choice" but to this week hand over documents revealing the owner's identity to investigators.

A source told The Times the probe is being led by Italian financial police.

Retired clerk Ernesto Rossi said: "Everybody calls it Putin’s yacht.

"It’s a rumour that’s been going around for months."

Bennett-Pearce - who said the superyacht's crew is 70 per cent Russian - admitted he'd heard the whispers - but said he was bound by a "watertight nondisclosure agreement" that stopped him revealing the owner.

But he denied the vessel belongs to Putin or that the Kremlin has ever been aboard, telling the outlet: "I have never seen him. I have never met him."

He said authorities had come on board to examine certification documents and planned to hand over paperwork.

"I have no doubt in my mind whatsoever that this will clear the vessel of all negative rumours and speculations," the captain added.

Last week, the Sun reported that a superyacht belonging to Putin ally Igor Sechin had been seized by French authorities.

They announced on March 3 that  the mammoth vessel , nicknamed "Amore Vero", or True Love, was being held in the port of La Ciotat.

It came after Alisher Usmanov had his  £600million luxury vessel  – thought to be largest yacht in the world in terms of internal volume – taken away by German authorities.

Usmanov had already been slapped with an EU travel ban and had his assets frozen as part of the tough EU sanctions.

Russia’s richest man , Alexei Mordashov, was the next to fall after his £45 million ship was seized by Italian cops at the northern harbour of Imperia.

It comes as:

The steel billionaire was believed to be in the Seychelles this week after reportedly sailing from the Maldives.

It comes as Putin's invasion of Ukraine escalates into its third week - with at least three people killed including a young girl after a Russian airstrike destroyed a maternity hospital in the besieged city of Mariupol.

President Volodymyr Zelensky  claimed the hospital suffered a "direct strike" and children were left buried under the rubble on Wednesday afternoon, branding the attack as an act of "genocide".

Women waiting to give birth were wounded in the strike, while children were buried in the rubble.

Pictures show an enormous crater left by the shelling, as explosions blew out windows and destroyed much of the front of the building.

Russia's invasion has stalled as Putin is thought to have believed he could have rolled over the country in 48 hours.

His soldiers expected to be welcomed with flowers as liberators, but instead they were met with molotov cocktails and AK-47s.

Moscow is believed to have suffered staggering losses - with as many as 12,000 troops killed and thousands of vehicles destroyed.

Pictures show Ukraine is now littered with the burnt out remains of Russian military convoys as they come under attack from all sides.

Western nations have also imposed biting new sanctions on Russia, pushing mad tyrant Putin's regime towards total economic collapse.

Despite this however - the advance is grinding forward at a slow pace towards the capital Kyiv.

The Bayesian was a world-class yacht.

The 19th largest yacht designed by luxury Italian manufacturer Perini , it boasted a sleek interior design by French designer Remi Tessier, a double engine, and one of the tallest aluminum masts in the world. It won multiple awards, including for "best sailing yacht" the year after its release.

But, almost two weeks ago on Aug. 19, the luxurious vessel sank to the bottom of the ocean off the coast of Sicily in an internationally-followed disaster, dumping 22 people aboard into the water and leaving seven dead , including British tech magnate Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah .

"The impossible happened on that boat," Giovanni Costantino, the yacht manufacturer's CEO, told Reuters.

In the wake of the disaster, an ongoing investigation into possible criminal errors committed by the Bayesian's crew and lingering questions surrounding its design underscore the need for proper yacht safety measures and practical ship designs, according to experts.

Italian prosecutors from a nearby town have now widened their investigation into possible criminal actions by the ship's captain in the lead-up to the shipwreck to include two additional crew members, a judicial source told Reuters on Wednesday.

Tim Parker Eaton and Matthew Griffith are now under investigation for manslaughter and shipwreck, days after news broke that investigators are probing whether Captain James Cutfield committed the same crimes.

Authorities are looking into whether Parker Eaton, a ship engineer, failed to protect the ship's engine room and operating systems. Griffith, a sailor on the ship, was on watch duty on the morning the ship sank.

Cutfield "exercised his right to remain silent" when investigators interrogated him on Tuesday, Giovanni Rizzuti, his lawyer, told Reuters.

"First, he's very worn out," Rizzuti said. "Second, we were appointed only on Monday, and for a thorough and correct defense case, we need to acquire a set of data that at the moment we don't have."

Rizzuti did not immediately respond to a request for comment emailed to him by USA TODAY.

Rescuers found the bodies of Chris Morvillo, an American citizen and lawyer for Clifford Chance, his wife, Neda Morvillo, Jonathan Bloomer, a non-executive chair of Morgan Stanley International, and his wife, Judy Bloomer, inside the ship two days after the wreck. Recaldo Thomas, the ship's cook who also went by Ricardo, was the first person pronounced dead in the disaster – his body was recovered on the day of the sinking.

Captains must follow safety procedures before storms

Costantino chalked up the boat's fate to a "series of indescribable, unreasonable errors" committed by the crew. The ship's crew made an "incredible mistake" in not preparing adequately for the storm, he said.

Costantino said the crew should have summoned passengers from their rooms earlier, as the storm picked up. The keel, a heavy weight under the ship to counterbalance the ship's large mast, should have been lowered, and portholes should have been closed – both factors that could influence whether the captain is found culpable, according to experts .

Captains should always check weather forecasts and look into local weather patterns, Mitchell Stoller, a maritime expert witness and captain, told USA TODAY . When in stormy weather, captains should also weigh anchor, so that a ship can float over unstable waters, he added.

"The general standard of care in this situation is to monitor the weather, exercise caution, have a night watch, have the engine going, ready to maneuver," he said.

Wealthy clients push for impractical designs, expert says

Costantino said the ship's design and construction was error-free. But one yacht design expert disagrees.

"There's so many other factors, and this huge, complex boat is part of it," said Tad Roberts, a British Columbia-based yacht designer who has worked in the industry for nearly 40 years.

The Bayesian's giant mast is part of a trend of bigger and bigger yachts, according to Roberts. He worked on the design of the Asolare, formerly the Scheherazade – at 154 feet long, the largest cold-molded sailing yacht in the world when it was released in 2003, according to its manufacturer, Hodgdon Yacht Services. "It's small today," Roberts added.

Roberts said problems emerge when yacht designers can't say no to wealthy clients' demands for more and more extravagant and overgrown designs.

"The clients are wealthy people. They are very used to getting whatever it is they want," he said.

But owners' requests can compromise security, he said.

"Owners are not naval architects," he said. "They don't understand the issues involved, and trying to explain to them may or may not work, but there are compromises being made all the time."

Yacht buyers are more likely to get a better boat than they would 50 years ago, since yachts are exported and built towards international standards, he said. Still, the worsening effects of climate change and extreme weather are growing risks to anyone sailing the high seas, he added.

"Be aware. That's the biggest part of it," he said. "There's a possibility that things could go bad, that there is risk involved."

Yacht owners install million-dollar, AI-powered security systems

Piracy on yachts is even rarer than sudden storms – only two cases were reported between 2019 and 2023, according to the International Maritime Bureau's Piracy Reporting Centre . Still, superyacht owners are investing in James Bond-esque technology in an effort to protect their vessels.

"There's definitely increased concern," said Frederik Giepmans, managing director of safety and security at MARSS, a technology company that offers high-tech surveillance and security systems for superyachts with a price tag "from the hundreds of thousands into millions," he said.

NiDAR, a software program manufactured by MARSS to provide protection for superyachts, can pick up on objects approaching a yacht from the air or water "while underway, at anchor and in port," according to the company's website.

The surveillance system uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to handle data from sensors monitoring all sides of a vessel. The AI system provides "constant, long range monitoring of the air, of the surface, of the underwater, to try and give the crew as much response time as possible," said Giepmans.

That way, yacht owners can pick up on any manner of approaching objects, from "small, fast craft approaching on the surface" to divers and submarines under the water.

But if a threat is detected, a yacht owner's "options to respond are limited," Giepmans said. "You can get out of the way. You can bring people to safety. But, for instance, a more military response is not available to you."

Giepmans pointed to a recent increase in attacks on commercial ships, like attacks carried out by Houthi rebels on ships cruising through the Red Sea. "There's a gap there in terms of security," he said. "Because there isn't really, right now, a way for commercial or private clients, to respond, perhaps, in an appropriate way to these threats."

Luxury yacht owners cruising off the coast of Monaco, for instance, shouldn't be as concerned about a direct threat to their security, as compared with boats sailing through other locations, he said. "It really depends on that, as to what extent they will go to protect their ship."

The greater danger could come from adverse weather events, as the planet warms every year.

Meteorologists have pointed to a water spout, a tornado that spun up over the water amid the storm that hit the Bayesian, as a possible factor in its wreck.

Water temperatures in the area were more than three degrees higher than average that day, the perfect conditions for the spout to form and the likely result of climate change, Rick Shema, a certified consulting meteorologist and former member of the Navy, previously told USA TODAY.

"The water spout was an uncommon occurrence. But again, these things happen, especially in warmer water," he said.

I could also just be a case of having a name on the paperwork to cover up the true ownership. There have already been multiple indications that VP puts many of his assets in the names of trusted accomplices.

"Scheherazade" has now been officially served by the Italian government as the yacht appeared to be preparing to leave Marina di Cararra where it had been getting some work done on it. Members of Italian Guardia di Finanza boarded the 459-foot on May 6 to deliver papers to the superyacht.

It appears this yacht has reflagged now...and is currently flying the flag of Malaysia...very odd place to register a superyacht.

After stern extension works have been completed Scheherazade has a brand-new transom and is now afloat. And...what an interesting thing...I was having a look at Graceful's interior (now Kosatka or something like that) and...look at what was playing peekaboo in plain sight... Does someone recognise her?
