We know that yachts are a symbol of wealth and success among the world's rich and famous. Besides having multiple mansions, ultra-luxurious private jets , and garages full of the world's fanciest and highest-performing sports vehicles, yachts are a complementary addition to the ensemble. Hollywood's celebrities are known for their extravagant yachts, such as Giorgio Armani and even Cristiano Ronaldo , but none of these can come close to the Fulk Al Salamah, which is owned by the Omani Royal Family of the House of Busaid, also known as the Al Said dynasty. The Al Said dynasty is found most commonly in the Dubai region, where most of the billionaires own large estates and other pricey possessions. Let's see what sets the Fulk Al Salamah aside from the rest of the other yachts in the world.

Yachts are characterized and coveted by the number of specifications they carry, including the maximum speed of the vessel's engine. For example, the French fashion tycoon, Bernard Arnault, has a mega yacht called the Symphony that spans 101 meters and is powered by a 4x MTU 16V4000M73 engine, and these are some of the features that have made it sought after. But the Fulk Al Salamah is in a league of its own. But to better understand the caliber of the mega yacht you're dealing with, you need to also know the caliver of the person/people who own it, who in this case is the Omani Royal Family. When it comes to unofficial royalty, this family isn't as flashy or as renowned as Queen Elizabeth and the English monarchy. Nevertheless, the Oman Family, who hail from southeastern Arabia, are as rich and as powerful as they come. They were once under the economic rule of the United Kingdom and India but regained economic independence in the late 1890s. Since then, they have reigned as sultans in the Busaid dynasty.

The Fulk Al Salamah may not be the longest yacht , but it is definitely among one of the more spacious luxurious yachts out there. According to Yacht Charter Fleet , the vessel's volume measured by gross tonnage is 22,000 GT (gross tonnage). The volume of a yacht is estimated by measuring from the keel to the funnel, and back to the outside of the hull framing. The enormous volume of the ship can easily give it the crown of the world's largest yacht by volume. However, that is yet to be made official, as the current holder for that title is the superyacht Dilbar, owned by Alisher Usmanov , which spans a gross tonnage of 15,917 GT.

Besides possessing an impressive gross tonnage, the Al Salamah mega yacht sports a crisp cream color with blue accents. In terms of speed performance, the vessel boasts 4 diesel 6-cylinder 9,177hp engines generating 750rpm and can reach a maximum speed of 22 knots. But if it's casually cruising the seas, it does an average of 15 knots. That's quite impressive for a yacht that is more voluminous in size than it is in length. But despite that fact, the Al Salamah measures a length of 508ft, and that's even bigger than Vladimir Putin's 490ft luxury yacht, which was unfortunately seized by the Italian government earlier this month.

Other than its massive size and length that can make one feel as though they're aboard a floating mansion, the Fulk Al Salamah is also decked with a few other remarkable features. The vessel was made to accommodate the newly elected Sultan of Oman since 2020, Haitham bin Tariq Al Said, and is fitted with gold-plated fixtures all throughout its interior, which is a feature that the wealthiest people in surrounding areas, like Dubai, have a fetish for. Inside the private vessel is an abundance of space, from a modernly designed movie theater and lounging room with polished wood-panel floors to an elegantly decorated, massive dining room area with marble tables and large paintings embellishing the walls. The dining room alone is likely bigger than most Los Angeles apartments!

Also available is a separate passageway for the crew, which amounts to around 130 persons for the vessel to operate optimally. There is also an enormous salon area fitted with dark brown and white wooden tables that are also gold-plated, in front of beige and white sofas. The overhead lighting fixtures portray an ambiance of golden heavenly bliss. This ship may not be the Titanic, but Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio could've definitely used it as a substitute. The conference room is laid out with a sprawling joint U-shape wooden table that spans the entire circumference of the room and is decorated with huge traditional vases and an overhead mirror in the center of the room. As it is a multi-layered yacht, there is also a beautifully-crafted winding staircase and elevator.

The VIP area looks like the inside of one of Jack Nicholson's many properties , with pristine white and cream flooring and seating space complimented by wooden doors, countertops, and cupboards. The bathroom areas are made of marble and large vanity mirrors. The same color scheme follows into the VIP suites, giving a warm and cozy feel with the brown and wooden aesthetics. Also available is a fully-functioning gym, beauty salon, and beach club as well as air conditioning throughout the entire vessel. The luxurious experience also extends to the deck where there is a modest pool area featuring a comfortable shaded lounging area, outdoor seating and dining, and a helicopter platform. At least getting stranded at sea won't be on the list of worries for the lucky passengers aboard the $500 million marvel!

Fulk Al Salamah, “Ship of peace” supposedly owned by Omani Royal Fleet

Fulk Al Salamah or translated to English “Ship of Peace” was assembled by “Mariotti” in Genoa, Italy. It is the world’s second-largest super yacht.

It is believed to belong to the Omani Royal Fleet. Notable amenities include a beauty salon, beach club, and conference facilities. It requires 130 crew members for optimal operation.

Information that we know

Information about the Fulk Al Salamah is not public. What is known is that the boat’s exterior was designed by Studio de Jorio.

The exterior is looking like a support vessel, but this is a real luxury super yacht inside

As you can see, 164 metre Fulk Al Salamah features a large helicopter deck, raked masts and a bathing platform.

However, the lack of exterior relaxation spaces adds to the impression that she is a support vessel, rather than a super yacht in her own right.

Nonetheless, she can comfortably lay claim to being the world’s largest super yacht support vessel.

Images show what could be an expansive beach club similar to that of a sistership built by Mariotti.

Meaning “Ship of Peace”, luxury yacht Fulk Al Salamah was first discovered in 2014 as project Saffron. It is believed to have inherited the name from a 136 metre support vessel, which has since been renamed Aldhaferah.

Although not the longest yacht, a record currently held by super yacht AZZAM , which measures 180 metres (591ft), “Ship of peace” is the biggest in terms of volume measured by a gross tonnage of 22,000 GT. For this reason, the superyacht eclipses AZZAM , which comes in at 13,136 GT.

Important note about Fulk Al Salamah

It must be noted that a yacht’s size is measured in gross tonnage rather than length. Gross tonnage (often abbreviated as GT) is a nonlinear measure of a ship’s overall internal volume.

Calculated by measuring a super yacht’s volume and applying a mathematical formula, it is then possible to produce an accurate reading which can be used for comparing its size to other yachts.

First glimpse of 164m Mariotti Fulk Al Salamah

The 164 metre superyacht support vessel Fulk Al Salamah has been delivered to Oman by Italian yard Mariotti Yachts .

First announced in 2014 and developed under the codename Project Saffron, this project has been shrouded in mystery from the outset. Her overall length has been estimated from AIS data but any further details are unclear. She is believed to have a beam of 28 metres and a total interior volume of 11,000 gross tonnes.

Fulk Al Salamah departed the Mariotti Yachts facility in Genoa on July 28, bound for Muscat. Her new owners are believed to be the Omani royal family.

She is likely to be a replacement for the 136.34 metre Bremer Vulkan support vessel of the same name, which was used to shadow the 155 metre Lürssen superyacht Al Said — number four on our definitive list of the largest yachts in the world .

As the image above shows, the new 164 metre Fulk Al Salamah features a large helideck, raked masts and a bathing platform. However, the lack of exterior relaxation spaces adds to the impression that she is a support vessel, rather than a superyacht in her own right. Nonetheless, she can comfortably lay claim to being the world’s largest superyacht support vessel .

Other projects currently under development at Mariotti Yachts include the 55 metre explorer yacht Project Geo , which features styling inside and out by Luca Dini , and is due to launch in 2017.

El Camino Not-So-Real: The True Story of the 'Ancient Road'

El Camino Real — originally part of 101 — runs the length of the Peninsula between San Francisco and San Jose. Its very name implies a regal history. Translated from the Spanish, it means “The King’s Highway.”

Legend has it that El Camino Real in Silicon Valley is part of the historic Mission Trail, an ancient road that connects the Spanish missions, which stretch like a string of pearls along the California coast.

But is that true?

Debbie Torrey of Campbell asked Bay Curious the question “What can you find about The El Camino Real history?”

We met up with American History professor Robert Senkewicz of Santa Clara University, which happens to host one of the Bay Area’s five Spanish missions, Mission Santa Clara .

There, Senkewicz began to unravel a series of falsehoods that have been “common wisdom,” starting with the surprising truth that there were many El Camino Reals all over the land that Spain used to control in the New World, from 1769 to 1821.

“Technically, all of this belonged to the King of Spain,” Senkewicz says, and many major roads would have been called El Camino Real.

Then he makes a left turn I was not expecting.

“What happened in terms of the El Camino Real has more to do with Southern California than it does with Northern California,” Senkewicz says. “By about the 1870s, you get more and more Anglos, Americans, coming into Southern California. And the Anglo population really increases with the arrival of the railroads in Los Angeles in the 1880s.”

In America, there’s a rich tradition of just-got-here-yesterday people concocting romantic origin myths, and a number of influential Southern Californians wanted one of their own. They looked around and saw crumbling Spanish missions: 21 of them, from the Mexican border all the way north to Sonoma.

“The mission past that they construct was a fantasy past: heroic missionaries, happy, contented Indians, fandangos all over the place,” Senkewicz says.

Of course, what was really going on here was the enslavement of local tribespeople, who were reeling under the impact of European diseases, forced religious conversion and the destruction of their entire way of life.

Not that our question asker Debbie Torrey — or I — learned much of this in the fourth grade, which is when a lot of California schoolchildren study the subject.

“You’re right,” Torrey says. “They did glamorize it, thinking it was all wonderful.”

There were a number of ways the Spanish were given credit for things they didn’t do.

“Often enough you read in textbooks that they blazed trails,” Senkewicz says. “They didn’t blaze trails. They followed trails that had already been developed by indigenous people up and down the California coast.”

But at the turn of the 20th century, as Phoebe S. Kropp details in her excellent book, “California Vieja,”  few people wanted that version of history. They wanted something fun, happy and exotic. Groups like the Landmarks Club, led by the Los Angeles historian Charles Lummis, and the Native Daughters of the Golden West pushed to reframe a collection of dirt roads into a “rediscovered” king’s highway.

In many ways, they were inspired by works of fiction like Helen Hunt Jackson’s 1884 novel, “Ramona.” Although Jackson meant to expose the mistreatment of the “Mission Indians,” the book fed the public’s desire for a romanticized vision of Spanish California.

The myth spread further when the Automobile Club of Southern California decided that this fantasy past was a great way of getting people to buy and drive automobiles.

“They begin to push the notion that there was one central road, which they named the El Camino Real, that connected the missions. They began to push the notion that the missions were located a day’s journey from each other,” Senkewicz says. “Which kind of, when you kind of think about it, makes them motels, rather than what they actually were: agents of assimilation of the native peoples.”

If you think about it, the walk between Mission Dolores in San Francisco and Mission Santa Clara would make for a really long day.

Also, look at this 1915 map from the Automobile Club of Southern California. Once you get north of Central California, it becomes much less clear how Bay Area missions are one day’s drive apart.  (Also, the mapmaker got the name of the mission in modern-day Fremont wrong. It’s Mission San Jose .)

So why did Northern California play along with this Southern California fantasy? Senkewicz says the concept caught on with wealthy Californians like Jane Stanford, wife of the railroad baron Leland Stanford, and prominent Catholics like San Francisco Mayor James Phelan. They wanted the Spanish missions restored to something like their former glory.

“A lot of them were really in sad shape,” Senkewicz says. “If you look at pictures from the 1860s and the 1870s, the missions are crumbling!”

Consider this: If the Spanish Revival movement had not happened, we might be looking at a string of ruins along the California coast.

Years ago, Debbie Torrey took her kids on a multi-mission tour, but told them a lot of stuff that turns out to be bunk.

Now she plans to take her grandkids. They’ll get the truth.
