Black Jack 100 breaks Palermo-Montecarlo record, secures victory for Yacht Club de Monaco

Black Jack 100 breaks Palermo-Montecarlo record, secures victory for Yacht Club de Monaco

After nine years, the Palermo-Montecarlo record has finally been broken. The new record was set by the maxi yacht Black Jack 100, helmed by Yacht Club de Monaco member Tristan Le Brun, who completed the 500-nautical-mile journey from Palermo, Sicily, to Monaco in 1 day, 20 hours, 34 minutes, and 22 seconds. This achievement shatters the previous record set in 2015 by Esimit Europa 2, which is in fact the former name of Black Jack 100.

The Palermo-Montecarlo race, organised by the Circolo della Vela Sicilia in collaboration with the Yacht Club de Monaco and Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, saw participation from around 50 international teams this year, including notable entries like Andrea Statari’s Comet 45s Gorilla Gang XL and Paul Basson’s Swan46 Foreign Affair, both representing the Yacht Club de Monaco.

The race began on Tuesday, August 20, under windy conditions that saw competitors racing up the coasts of Sardinia and Corsica at full speed. The battle between Black Jack 100 and the American yacht Lucky, helmed by Bryon Ehrhart, kept spectators on edge as the two crews sailed neck and neck for much of the race. Ultimately, Black Jack 100 pulled ahead midway through the course, securing a 44-minute lead by the finish.

This victory not only makes Black Jack 100 the real-time winner but also crowns it the new record holder of the Palermo-Montecarlo race. The crew will receive the Giuseppe Tasca D’Almerita Trophy for their achievement.

With 1,000 sailors taking part in this year’s regatta, some of the world’s leading sailing talent can be found on the race track and coupled with strong winds of 24 to 25 knots provided a good challenge for the Swan 60 by Nautor Swan to launch into her first campaign.

The cosmopolitan team worked consistently together in order to generate a 5th place in Race One and then followed on consistently with a 6th place in Race Two.

Skipper, Tomasso Chieffi, is positive commenting on the Swan 60 yacht Bronenosec’s performance today: “The team worked in a very efficient manner today. We are still tweaking the Swan 60 due to it being a new race boat this season and are working to maintain our consistent standard across all wind conditions.  Our overall boat speed is similar to that of Swan 60 yacht Emma who are currently in 3rd place overall so we have some good competition over the next couple of days to look forward to and will be aiming to improve upon our results.”

The team returned to Palma all smiling and helm, Vladimir Liubomirov also Commodore at the Yacht Club of Saint-Petersburg was congratulated on return to shore for his performance at the wheel in strong winds. With only one ripped spinnaker, there was limited boat repair activity post racing. The Yacht Club of Saint-Petersburg ’s entry now sits 5th overall in the Mini Maxi Class with racing scheduled daily until April 21st.

A Waterspout Was Seen When a Luxury Yacht Sank. What Is It?

Witnesses reported seeing the tornado-like phenomenon hit the Bayesian, a sailing yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily on Monday.

  • Share full article

The Bayesian sailing yacht

By Eve Sampson

What caused the sinking on Monday of a sailing yacht carrying the British billionaire Mike Lynch and 21 other people off the coast of Sicily is still unknown. But some attention has focused on observations by witnesses, who described seeing a small tornado-like column known as a waterspout forming over the water during an abrupt and violent storm as the vessel sank.

Fifteen passengers on the 180-foot yacht, the Bayesian, escaped on a raft before being rescued by a neighboring cruise ship. The body of the ship’s cook was recovered on Monday and six people remain unaccounted for , including Mr. Lynch and his daughter Hannah, according to officials with Sicily’s civil protection agency.

Prosecutors in the nearby city of Termini Imerese have opened an inquiry into the cause of the sinking.

Here is what to know about waterspouts, a surprisingly common weather phenomenon that may have helped sink the luxury yacht.

What are waterspouts?

Waterspouts are columns of spinning air and moisture — similar to tornadoes over water, according to the National Weather Service .

While some form in fair weather, and are aptly called fair weather waterspouts, another more dangerous variety called tornadic waterspouts develops downward from a thunderstorm. These tornadic waterspouts can either form as regular tornadoes over land and move out to sea, or form in a storm already over a large body of water, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association .

Fair weather waterspouts are weak, often dissipate quickly and do not cause major damage, according to the agencies, but tornadic waterspouts are more often associated with high winds, dangerous and frequent lightning, and hail. The Italian authorities recorded strong winds and intense lightning activity at the time the yacht went down.

How common are waterspouts?

Experts say waterspouts may be more common than tornadoes, but because oceans are so vast, they are more difficult to track — and as difficult to predict.

“The Mediterranean is possibly one of the places where waterspouts are most likely around the world due to the warm ocean surface and a climate that is very susceptible to thunderstorms throughout the summer and autumn,” according to a statement by Peter Inness, a meteorologist at the University of Reading in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Inness pointed to a 2022 study by scientists from University of Barcelona , which found that waterspouts occurred more frequently over warmer sea surfaces. The North Atlantic ocean has been unusually hot for over a year, repeatedly reaching record highs for the time of year , according to data from the oceanic association.

The International Centre for Waterspout Research on Monday said on X , the platform formerly known as Twitter, that it had confirmed 18 waterspouts near Italy in recent days, and several fishermen in the area of the accident told Italian media that they had witnessed a waterspout near the yacht.

What may have happened?

Karsten Börner, the captain of the nearby boat that rescued the 15 passengers, said in an interview that he saw the Bayesian about 490 feet away before the wind and lightning picked up.

While it was difficult to see what happened amid the storm, “my theory was that she was capsized first and then went down over the stern,” he said.

Towering over 237 feet tall, the Bayesian mast was one of the tallest aluminum masts in the world and it also had a special keel that could be raised or lowered, according to its manufacturer, Perini Navi. A keel is the downward-extending centerline underneath a boat that can help stabilize the vessel.

“In this case, having a tall aluminum mast would not make it the safest port to be in case of a storm,” said Andrea Ratti, associate professor of nautical design and architecture technology the Politecnico di Milano.

He added that “a lot of questions will remain until we have other elements at our disposal.”

Elisabetta Povoledo contributed reporting.

Vela Boat Club

Shared Catamaran Ownership

Southern california & the sea of cortez.

A message from Eddie: Vela Boat Club is not a business. The purpose is to provide information to boat owners and potential boat owners on the cost/benefit relationship of shared ownership. The idea is for you to connect with others that want to share ownership in a boat large or small. If you buy a boat and want it professionally managed or placed in a charter fleet I can help with that process. I work for West Coast Multihulls which manages over 30 boats in the Sea of Cortez, San Diego, and Marina Del Rey. If you want to place a catamaran (or monohull) in any of these locations then we can make that happen. If you use the information on this site to set up your own shared ownership boat and manage the boat yourself that is also great. I personally own 1/4 share of a 18’ center console and 1/2 of a 20’ RIB. Shared ownership has worked out great for me and I see myself owning a 1/5 share of a catamaran in the next few years. Many of these shared ownership ideas come from my experience over the years managing boats and owning boats. If you have questions I’m happy to chat with you. Please start with reading over the information on this site then send me an email with questions. I spend a lot of time out on the water so I don’t usually pick up the phone right away. I’ve also set up a facebook group as an easier way for people to connect with each other to find potential boat partners. You can go to that page here… Vela Boat Club FB Group

Why Shared Ownership?

SHARED OWNERSHIP VS FULL OWNERSHIP

Shared ownership can reduce the cost of catamaran ownership by up to 80%. It allows you to SAIL MORE and spend less time and money maintaining your boat. We limit the number of owners per boat to a maximum of 5 so you have a lot of scheduling availability when you reserve your 70 days a year. Shared ownership is how you live the part-time cruiser lifestyle without the stress of financing & maintaining an individually owned catamaran.

SHARED OWNERSHIP VS CHARTERING

If you wish to sail more than 10 days a year you will generally find shared ownership to be a better financial option compared to chartering. You will also be onboard your boat that is very well maintained and you are comfortable operating. It will be equipped and supplied how you like it.

Shared ownership can be a great fit if you want to sail more than 10 days a year and less than 60.

Why five Owners?

Five owners each bring 20% of the cost to buy a catamaran, same as a typical down payment. More owners would further reduce the costs, but reservation availability would be start to be much more difficult for you. There is no point in owning a share with 10 people to make it cheaper if you never get to use it when you want. We feel 5 owners is the right balance between reducing costs and maintaining availability.

Why 70 days?

Five owners x 70 days = 350 days. The other 15 days are reserved for maintenance.

Flexible Scheduling

Scheduling is very flexible and fair. We will have an viewable online calendar for your catamaran and you can reserve your days from 24hrs to 2 years in advance. Each share is allotted 70 days of reservations per year for you, as well as your friends and family.

Liability Protection

All catamarans are owned by a Limited Liability Corporation that has up to 5 members, each owning 20% of the catamaran. Your LLC will contract with the Vela Boat Club to manage the boat and scheduling.

Selling Your Share

We know life plans can change in an instant. We will accommodate your needs by allowing members to sell their share of the LLC at any time at the current market rate. An individual member that wants to go full time cruising also has the option to buy all the shares in the LLC if the other members are willing to sell.

Charter Partnership Income

Owners can also partner with West Coast Multihulls to charter your catamaran when its not being used. This will help offset your annual operating expenses and can provide you with business tax deductions.

Purchase & Sell Shares

Ready to Buy List

Sailing to Agua Verde

Wcm charter partnership.

West Coast Multihulls has been teaching catamaran instruction for over 10 years and is one of the worlds largest ASA sailing schools - with award winning instructors. By placing your catamaran in the lessons and charter fleet you can receive revenue to offset your ownership expenses.

You may also be able to take advantage of tax benefits by using your catamaran as a charter business. Some West Coast Multihulls partners have received significant tax benefits with this program.

How Much Can you Make?

As a general rule you can expect to cover most of your operating costs if the boat is available to charter often. The number of cabins and onboard equipment also plays a large role in how much charter revenue can be generated. Your main goal should be to reduce your net operating costs while still enjoying your catamaran.

Yacht Management

Many boats sit at the dock most of their lives costing their owners a small fortune so they can spend a few weeks a year aboard. When they get on their boat they wonder why it smells bad or why their outboard wont start. Instead of going out sailing and exploring, owners end up spending their boat time fixing it, cleaning it, talking with mechanics, and looking for parts.

The value in our Yacht Management Program is both freeing up your time, and taking great care of your catamaran.

Our responsibilities are to schedule your preventative maintenance, coordinate repairs, stock and inventory spare parts, oversee detailing and cleaning, inspect work and review invoices. This allows you to step onboard knowing your boat will look great, smell great, and run great. Our aim is to make sure everyday on your boat is an awesome experience.

LLC Management

Your LLC Manager will provide the following:

Provide oversight of the Yacht Manager

Management of the LLC's Financial Assets

Coordinate Insurance for the LLC Assets

Review and Audit the Company's Expense and Revenue Reports

Ensure the terms of the LLC Operating Agreement Are Followed

Sail Exchange

As a fractional owner in the VELA Boat Club, you can trade some of your allocated days with other owners in the Sail Exchange Program. This will allow you to use another catamaran in the Sea of Cortez or Southern California if your cat has already been reserved or if you want to try a new cruising area.

Catamaran Ownership Costs

The cost of owning a catamaran can vary greatly depending on the specific boat size, equipment, total use, and location. A general estimate is 10% of the appraised value of the catamaran. You can read more about estimated ownership costs in our blog posts .

Rescue workers continue the search for six missing people published at 20:28 British Summer Time 20 August 20:28 BST 20 August

Rescue workers and divers from the Italian fire brigade as a rescue operation continues for the missing people who were on board a sailboat that sank, in Porticello, Sicily Island

Search crews say their efforts to recover the six people still not accounted for after a yacht sank off the coast of Sicily on Monday will "continue without stopping".

As the second day of that operation comes to close, here's what we have learned:

  • Friends of Recaldo Thomas , the chef believed to have died in the sinking, have begun to pay tribute to his "smile that lit up a room"
  • Three more survivors have been named as Leo Eppel and South African nationals Leah Randall and Katja Chicken - all members of crew that were on board the ship when it sank
  • Six people still remain unaccounted for: Mike Lynch, his 18-year-old daughter Hannah , Jonathan Bloomer and his wife Judy, and Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda
  • Divers have been able to reach the lounge of the yacht but their path to the cabins has been blocked by "a world of objects"
  • The Italian coastguard says that specialist divers are "evaluating the feasibility of safely entering the wreck", but warn the search is being complicated by its " depth and the position of the hull" around 50m (164ft) below the surface
  • Jonathan Bloomer's twin brother has told the BBC his family are "coping the best we can" as they wait for updates from the rescue team's ongoing efforts

We're going to pause our coverage now but you can read more about the second day of the Bayesian search operation here .

Technology tycoon Mike Lynch is still missing alongside his 18-year-old daughter

Six people remain unaccounted for after a luxury yacht sank off the coast of Sicily, including a father and daughter, as well as two married couples.

UK businessman Mike Lynch, who helped establish Cambridge Neurodynamics and co-founded the firm Autonomy, is still missing alongside his daughter Hannah Lynch , an 18-year-old student.

Jonathan Bloomer , the chairman of Morgan Stanley Bank International, and his wife Judy Bloomer were also on the yacht when it sank and have not yet been found.

Chris Morvillo , a partner at the law firm Clifford Chance, and his wife Neda Morvillo, a jewellery designer, have also been confirmed as missing.

Earlier we reported that the body of a man recovered near the sunken Sicilian yacht is believed to be that of Recaldo Thomas , a Canadian-Antiguan chef who was working on the boat.

His friends have described him as having "a smile that lit up the room".

Jonathan and Judy Bloomer - who are still missing following the sinking of the Bayesian yacht - are “incredibly generous people”, the reverend of their local church says.

Speaking to BBC South East, Rev Tim Edwards, from Knockholt in Kent, says “at the moment there’s an awful lot that we don’t know”.

He describes the couple as being “very much” part of the village community and active with local charities.

What are waterspouts? published at 19:52 British Summer Time 20 August 19:52 BST 20 August

According to vessel tracking app Vesselfinder, the Bayesian left the Sicilian port of Milazzo on 14 August and was last tracked east of Palermo on Sunday evening, with a navigation status of "at anchor".

Witnesses later described seeing a waterspout form during a storm that hit in the area overnight, and - as mentioned in our last post - it is believed to have struck the yacht before it sank.

Most are familiar with what tornadoes look like - they are rotating columns of destructive winds, protruding from the base of clouds down to the ground. According to BBC Weather, waterspouts are just that too, but they form over water rather than land.

Instead of dust and debris swirling around the core of strong winds, it is water mist whipped up from the surface.

Like tornadoes, most are only short-lived, narrow columns and are not easily picked out on weather radars, so many will go unreported.

How could the yacht have sunk? published at 19:39 British Summer Time 20 August 19:39 BST 20 August

It is believed the Bayesian was struck by a tornado over the water - otherwise known as a waterspout - causing the luxury yacht to capsize and sink to the seabed.

There are separate reports the boat's mast snapped during the freak storm, while other factors in the boat's tipping over could include water entering through hatches and doors which might have been left open because of warm weather off the Italian coast.

Graphic showing a boat with a mast standing straight and 1) says "High winds or a tornado-like waterspout may have tipped the yacht onto its side. The second image shows it leaning at 45 degrees in the water and says 2) "Water could then have entered hatches and doors left open because of warm weather". The third picture shows it lying on its side on the seabed and says 3) "The yacht is on its starboard (right) side on the seabed, 50m underwater"

"He is so approachable and a very easy person to talk to," Richard Smith, who lives in the Suffolk village of Pettistree, says. "A nice sense of humour."

"You might think with all that money that he would be a difficult person to talk to, but in fact he was a very easy person to talk to."

One of Mike Lynch's neighbours says she was "horrified" to find out he was missing and describes it as the "worst news".

"I just couldn't believe it, I thought this can't be right," Ruth Leigh, of Pettistree in Suffolk, says.

Leigh says they have lived near each other for around 15 years and describes Lynch as a "fantastic neighbour" and a "very charitable man".

"Even though he was incredibly wealthy and a very important person he never ever gave that impression.

"Whenever he met you he always remembers your name, he would chat to you - incredibly friendly and down to earth, which we thought was a great quality," she adds.

Did the yacht’s keel play a role in it sinking? published at 18:46 British Summer Time 20 August 18:46 BST 20 August

By Tom Edgington

There has been speculation about the type of keel on the Bayesian and whether it may have been a factor in it sinking.

The website for Perini Navi – the yacht’s builder – is currently not available. However, by searching internet archives BBC Verify has obtained the boat’s 2018 brochure.

In the “features and performance” section, the document gives dimensions for the keel in an "up" position - 4.05m (13ft) - and in a "down" position - 9.83m (32ft) - suggesting it is retractable.

The BBC has contacted Perini Navi but has not had a reply.

A keel is a support structure underneath the boat which projects downwards and helps keep it balanced on the surface.

Certain boats might require a retractable keel in order to enter shallow water without getting stuck.

We don’t know if the Bayesian’s keel was up or down at the time it was struck by a storm.

However, Andrew Fairbrass who runs a large yacht engineering business says “when you're sailing, you have to keep the keel down and it does make a big difference to stability”.

In cloudy skies and on choppy waters, the search has gone on all day, a helicopter scouring the site where the Bayesian capsized as divers plunged deep below.

They’re trying to access the wreckage of the yacht that was hit by a tornado-like waterspout, and is now 50m (164ft) underwater.

Given the depth, each dive can only be 10 minutes, and with the boat still largely intact it’s hard to get access inside.

British investigators are now here to assess what happened during the extreme weather that hit the Bayesian.

Severe heat and violent storms had prompted a weather alert before the yacht went down.

Tonight the search goes on - but any hope of a Mediterranean miracle survival has all but vanished.

Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer

Jonathan Bloomer's twin brother has told the BBC his family are "coping the best we can" as rescue workers continue to search for him off the coast of Sicily.

The banker is one of six people still missing since the Bayesian yacht capsized.

Jeremy Bloomer tells the BBC he has not received any new updates on the search efforts to find Jonathan, beyond that divers are struggling to access the wreck of the boat.

He says: "It's a slow process and it will take time. So there might be air pockets, but we don't know."

Jeremy continues: "He was my older [brother] by half an hour. So it means a lot when you lose a twin brother. It's still wait and see, so fingers crossed."

Asked how he was coping, he says the situation is "terrible" and something that's "beyond your wildest imagination".

Two members of crew named as survivors of yacht sinking published at 17:39 British Summer Time 20 August 17:39 BST 20 August

We've just heard from the Italian coastguard, which has named two more survivors of the yacht sinking.

South African nationals Leah Randall and Katja Chicken, who worked as crew members on the Bayesian, managed to get to safety after the vessel sank in the early hours of Monday morning.

In total , 15 of the 22 people on board have been rescued . Among them are:

  • Mike Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares
  • Charlotte Golunski, her husband James and their one-year-old daughter
  • Ayla Ronald, who worked as a lawyer for Mike Lynch, and her partner

Twelve people were vacationing on Mike Lynch 's yacht, alongside 10 crew members, when it sank in a storm off the coast of Sicily. The gathering was reportedly a celebration.

Earlier this year, Lynch was cleared of fraud and conspiracy charges arising from the sale of his firm Autonomy to US tech giant Hewlett Packard. The decade-long legal battle had led to Lynch's extradition from the UK.

Upon being cleared of the charges in June, the British entrepreneur said he was "elated" and thanked his legal team for their "tireless work". Some of them were on the yacht alongside him when it sank.

Chris Morvillo , a lawyer for Clifford Chance - the law firm that represented Lynch - is among the six people still missing. So is his wife Neda Morvillo , an American jewellery designer.

Ayla Ronald, a senior associate at the same law firm, also worked on Lynch's case. Both she and her partner were invited to the yacht and were rescued when it sank.

Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Bloomer - who appeared as a defence witness for Lynch during his trial - and his wife Judy Bloomer were on the boat when disaster struck. Both are unaccounted for.

Charlotte Golunski, the board director of Luminance - an artificial intelligence platform founded by Lynch - was on board, along with her husband and one-year-old daughter. All three survived.

Lynch's wife Angela Bacares and daughter Hannah were also there. Bacares has been rescued but 18-year-old Hannah is still missing.

The body of a man recovered near the Bayesian yacht is believed to be that of Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian-Antiguan chef who was working on the boat.

His friends have been paying tribute to him. Gareth Williams, who lives in Antigua, knew Thomas for 30 years.

"I can talk for everyone that knew him when I say he was a well-loved, kind human being with a calm spirit," he told me.

The two grew up together in Antigua, where Recaldo spent his time during off-season.

"He would come over to mine over the weekend and he would sing. He had the deepest, most sultry voice in the world, and a smile that lit up the room.

"He told me just the other day that he needed to work two more seasons to fix up his late parents' house. He loved yachting, but he was tired."

Eli Fuller met Recaldo some 25 years ago while out socialising in Antigua.

"He knew everybody and was friends with everybody. He'd always ask how you were doing, how your family was - he was always positive.

"Personality was very important in his job. The world's richest people want to hang out with someone social. He was sought after."

He added that Thomas became an inspiration to young black children who wanted to get into yachting.

"The kids would see all these white people working on yachts. For them to see an Antiguan man travelling all over the world - it was important for our community."

Search efforts complicated by wreck's position underwater, coastguard says published at 16:42 British Summer Time 20 August 16:42 BST 20 August Breaking

The search for the missing six passengers "continues without stopping" but divers have not found anything, the Italian coastguard says.

The coastguard says that specialist divers are "evaluating the feasibility of safely entering the wreck", but that the search is being "complicated by the depth and the position of the hull lying on the seabed" - at 50m below the surface.

It adds there is no trace of "hydrocarbon pollution" - meaning oil or other similar fuel is not leaking from the wreck.

Why is the search and recovery operation for the Bayesian so complex? published at 16:28 British Summer Time 20 August 16:28 BST 20 August

Two members of search and rescue team in orange coastguard boat off the coast of Sicily

We're well into the second day of search and rescue operations for the six people still missing after the sinking of a luxury yacht off the coast of Sicily.

Here are some of the factors which make this a highly complex process:

  • The wreckage is currently 50m (165ft) below the surface of the water
  • Furniture and a "world of objects" are blocking access to the cabins of the yacht, hampering the divers' access
  • Divers can only spend 12 minutes below the surface of the water, meaning by the time they reach the Bayesian, they only have 10 minutes to search the wreck
  • The bridge of the yacht - the room where the captain controls the vessel - is full of electrical cables
  • Divers are unable to see inside the yacht , though a possible entry point could be through a 3cm (1.2in)-thick glass window
  • Specialist divers who are trained to work in small spaces have had to be flown in from Rome and Sardinia

Lord Deben, former Conservative MP John Gummer, describes his missing friend Mike Lynch as "a wonderfully kind and companionable" man.

"He is the kind of person who carries this enormously clever mind, but carries it so lightly, and is always interested in what others have to say and might contribute," he says in a statement.

"It is a very serious moment... for if we have lost him, we’ve lost a very wonderful man."

He adds: "It is one of the cruellest blows that could possibly be made if it turns out that he hasn’t survived because he had so much to give, and he was giving it.

"This is a man of outstanding ability, but also the sort of person whom we were all very, very fortunate to know."

Water conditions could have led to waterspout, says oceanographer published at 15:54 British Summer Time 20 August 15:54 BST 20 August

Dr Simon Boxall is a Senior Lecturer at Southampton University

Dr Simon Boxall is a senior lecturer at Southampton University

Dr Simon Boxall, an oceanographer from the University of Southampton, says "there's a lot still to be discovered" about what led to the sinking of the Bayesian.

Asked about reports the boat may have been hit by a waterspout , he tells the BBC they are "not normally dangerous" but that would depend on the intensity of the weather system.

Boxall says: "What's interesting is that we saw very light winds up until the time at which the yacht was hit.

"And then suddenly, the wind went from about three or four miles an hour to 30 or 40 miles an hour, and then dropped again. And that was on land.

"So it's a sort of precursor to there being a major sort of squall or even a waterspout that would have hit the ship."

The ocean to the north of Sicily is more than three degrees warmer than it should be at this time of year, he adds, creating a "perfect storm" for waterspouts to occur.

Captain Karsten Borner - a man with long white hair and glasses

The captain of the Dutch-flagged ship that rescued Bayesian passengers from the water before emergency services arrived has spoken again to Reuters.

Captain Karsten Borner has previously explained how he worked to keep his ship upright during the storm, before noticing the luxury yacht that had been behind his vessel had disappeared.

"I don't absolutely know what they did. I only know that they went flat with a mast on the water and that they sank in two minutes," Borner says.

He says the sea temperature, which meteorologists have told us was at an extreme high of 30C, is "way too hot for the Mediterranean, and this causes, for sure, heavy storms".

The Bayesian, an award-winning superyacht, sank during bad weather off the coast of Sicily in the early hours of Monday.

On Thursday, authorities confirmed divers had found the bodies of British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, Morgan Stanley International boss Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judy, and one of Mr Lynch's lawyers Chris Morvillo, and his wife Neda.

Recaldo Thomas, the on-board chef, was the first to be confirmed dead earlier this week.

Mr Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, was rescued along with 14 others - including Charlotte Golunski, a mother who told la Repubblica she held her one-year-old baby above the waves to save her from drowning.

Mr Lynch's 18-year-old daughter Hannah is still missing.

But what do we know about the ship?

The British-flagged 56-metre ship - previously called the Salute - was built in 2008 by Italian shipyard Perini Navi, and refitted in 2020.

The yacht's name would resonate with Mr Lynch because his PhD thesis and the software that made his fortune involved a statistical method known as Bayesian inference, based on an 18th-century theory, which helps forecasters predict outcomes more reliably.

Who currently holds the America’s Cup? List of challengers and defenders since 1851

O ne hundred and seventy-three years ago, on the Isle of Wight, a race began that would become a legend in the sailing world —a race that continues to be discussed today. The competition was for a silver trophy that captured the imaginations and fortunes of some of the wealthiest people in the world, sparking bitter rivalries, intense controversies, and costly legal battles.

What’s more remarkable is that the boat that would become the center of attention by winning the race, the yacht America , started the race facing the wrong way.

The Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes is one of the most prestigious yacht clubs in the world because this is where the America’s Cup began. Despite the poor start, America surprised its British hosts by winning the race, and the trophy soon made its way to New York. However, after the victory, the owners and crew were uncertain about what to do with their prize—until someone had an idea. This idea would transform the trophy into the most prestigious sailing award, and it has since become the oldest international sporting trophy in the world.

The trophy was renamed the America’s Cup after the yacht that won the first race , though it is informally known as the Auld Mug

Interesting trivia about the winning boat of the first event was a 100-foot schooner, and after winning the cup, the vessel was sold for a sum of $25,000, $5000 more than it was paid for.

For some, the America’s Cup has grown into an obsession. The quest for this trophy has led some of the wealthiest people to pour vast sums of money into their campaigns, only to come up short. Yet, despite the immense costs, many have returned to challenge for the Cup again and again. The New York Yacht Club, in particular, holds the record for the longest winning streak in history, fueled by these relentless East Coast competitors.

One such competitor was Thomas Lipton , who, despite five unsuccessful challenges with his Shamrock yachts, used the publicity to build his tea empire. His repeated failures earned him the respect and affection of the public, even as they cost him a fortune to defend his campaigns. In contrast, others, like Lord Dunraven , were entangled in bitter disputes , illustrating the passion and intensity that have always surrounded the America’s Cup.

The early days of the America’s Cup are as captivating as today’s high-tech, carbon-fiber racing machines.

The America’s Cup is the oldest international sailing competition. Races are held between a defending and challenging yacht club, with the winner awarded the America’s Cup trophy, known as the Auld Mug .

Any yacht club meeting the specified requirements can challenge the current holder. If successful, the challenging club gains stewardship of the Cup. In 1970, a Challenger Selection Series was held to decide the official challenger .

Team New Zealand syndicate

The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron club is the current holder of the America’s Cup . They successfully defended the 36th America’s Cup in March 2021 using an AC75 foiling monohull called Te Rehutai, owned and sailed by the Team New Zealand syndicate and heavily sponsored by Emirates airline company.

The next America’s Cup will be held between the defending Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron and a challenging yacht club from 12 October 2024 in Barcelona, Spain.

ACTIVITIES BLUE FLAG / Blue Sport 2020

Within the framework of the “Blue Flag” program, this year the Club Nàutic Costa Brava has carried out different environmental awareness and education campaigns. One of them has been the placement of stickers with the pictograms of the waste that must be deposited in each container in order to make club users aware of the importance of selective waste collection.

On the other hand, as part of the "Blue Sport" school sailing program, students have done research on how to minimize the effects of marine pollution. In this way, they become aware that the sea is part of our ecosystem and we must take care of it together.

CNCB – Vela Palamós, committed to its social commitment, collaborates with the co financing of the construction to adapt the new office of VIMAR in Calonge – Sant Antoni.

Last Tuesday 28 th July, the president of Club Nàutic Costa Brava – Vela Palamós, Mr. Eduard Sallés, gave the check with the economic contribution to the employer of the foundation, Mr. Jordi Sistach, in order to contribute with the financing of the adaptation that is going to take place in the old Parochial “Rober” of Calonge – Sant Antoni, transferred by the Town Council of this town.

With this gesture, Club Nàutic Costa Brava – Vela Palamós consolidates its solidarity project and its social commitment with entities that take over the well-being of people with functional diversity and provides them an easier access to the sea and to the sailing sport, such as Fundació Vimar, Fundació Tresc, Escola Palau in Girona and CEE Els Àngels in Palamós.

Palermo-Montecarlo 2024: Monegasques in the running for victory

palermo-monte-carlo-2024

This superb race takes some fifty boats between the islands of Sicily, Sardinia and Corsica, and finishes up on the mainland in Monaco.

club yacht vela

The race’s 19th edition is organised by the Circolo della Vela Sicilia in collaboration with the Yacht Club de Monaco and the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda. Three members of the Monegasque club are competing: Andrea Statari, Paul Basson and Tristan Le Brun.

Palermo and Monaco are 500 nautical miles apart. Some have already reached the finish line, taking just two days, such as Lucky and Blackjack 100, skippered by Tristan Le Brun. His yacht had previously won the race, in 2015, under the name of Esimit Europa 2, in a record time of 47 hours, 46 minutes and 48 seconds.

A leading trio from the outset

As the fleet made its way towards the Porto Cervo gate, early favourites began to emerge. Lucky, skippered by American Bryon Ehrhart, quickly took the lead, closely followed by the pre-race favourite, Black Jack 100, and Balthasar.

You can follow the race, and keep track of competitors, live on the website . The prize-giving ceremony will take place on Sunday at the Monaco Yacht Club, where the prestigious Angelo Randazzo and Giuseppe Tasca D’Almerita trophies will be awarded to the winners in compensated time and real time.

By New York Yacht Club

Twenty-five short-course races in three days in winds that rarely topped 10 knots are more than enough to fray the nerves of the most experienced and tranquil sailor. But when it came down to brass tacks on the final day of the  Hinman Masters Team Race , held this past weekend at the New York Yacht Club Harbour Court in Newport, R.I., the key was to forget what was on the line and all the hard work required to get to that point and stay calm. “When you’re thinking about that kind of a situation, where everybody’s finishing at the same time in an important race, you’re really trying to relax and just make your boat stay in the right spot, be legal, not foul, and get across the line in front of the competition,” says Brian Doyle (above, center), who led the host New York Yacht Club to its third consecutive win. “When it’s that close, and everyone’s shooting the line, you never know how the results are going to come out. But we came out on top by inches.”

The race Doyle references was sailed earlier today between Southern Yacht Club and New York Yacht Club. After three grueling round robins among all eight teams and going into a mini round robin among the top four teams, Southern and New York were tied at the sharp end of the leaderboard with 17 points apiece. In this race, the advantage repeatedly shifted between the two teams. As all six boats approached the finish line, it was impossible to tell which team had the edge. The race turned on the battle for fifth place, which was ultimately decided within feet of the finish line. While each team still had two races remaining, the odds for the overall win had tipped decidedly in favor of the New York Yacht Club, which secured the victory by splitting its final two races. Southern Yacht Club finished second—on the podium for the fifth straight year. Eastport Yacht Club took third and Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club finished fourth.

club yacht vela

The New York Yacht Club helped usher in a new era of adult team racing with the creation of the  New York Yacht Club Invitational Team Race Regatta for the Commodore George R. Hinman Masters Trophy  in 2000. That race, which requires skippers to be at least 45 years of age and crew to be over 40, was soon followed by the  New York Yacht Club Invitational Team Race Regatta for the Morgan Cup , an all-ages event, in 2003 and, in 2010, the  New York Yacht Club Grandmasters Team Race Regatta , which mandates skippers be at least 60 years of age and crew at least 50. The three team races are traditionally held over consecutive weekends in August at the New York Yacht Club Harbour Court, using the Club’s fleet of 22 Sonar keelboats, and annually attract some of the best adult team racers in the United States and Europe. New York Yacht Club Regatta Association sponsors for 2024 include  Helly Hansen ,  Peters & May ,  Hammetts Hotel  and  Safe Harbor Marinas .

To a spectator, team racing can seem loud and contentious, which is at least partially due to the quantity of starts, mark roundings and finishes that go into an average day. There’s simply a lot more racing, in tight quarters, on short courses, than in a typical fleet-race regatta. For the victorious New York Yacht Club team, however, the key to success lay in familiarity and quiet.

club yacht vela

“Our team’s been sailing together for several years, and we work really well together,” says Doyle. “We know what each other’s going to do. There’s not a lot of conversation between boats or even on the boats. We’re just boathandling well and consistently making moves to move up our teammates. And with that kind of teamwork, it works out well in the end.”

Of the 13 sailors who raced on Doyle’s squad this year, six raced together in the previous three editions of the Hinman Masters while another three sailed two of the previous three years. That experience and trust was essential for a regatta with predominantly light and variable winds.

“No win was ever secure, because as soon as you turned downwind, anything could happen,” says Doyle. “[On the final day] we had the wind coming over Goat Island, which made it even more tenuous, puffy and shifty all the way down the run. It didn’t matter if you were 1-2-3 [at the top mark], you could get overtaken.”

With the win, its ninth in the 25-year-history of the regatta, the New York Yacht Club widened its commanding lead in the overall win column. Southern stands second, with four. But the competition this year was as close as ever, a testament to the continued interest in this discipline and the growing collective skill level of the competitors.

club yacht vela

“Adult team racing, though 25 years of the Hinman Masters, has grown substantially,” says Doyle. “It’s really exciting. There’s more and more clubs now with fleets of boats, particularly Sonars, which is great, because they maneuver well and they’re great for team racing. We just heard that some more yacht clubs are purchasing fleets this year, so adult team racing is going to continue to grow.”

The New York Yacht Club’s 2024 team racing schedule will conclude with the  New York Yacht Club Grandmasters Team Race , which starts on Friday, August 23, and runs through Sunday. Ten teams are scheduled to participate in this event, which mandates that skippers be at least 60 years of age and crew 50 or older.
