MUSTANG’s timeless design, ever-popular layout and beautiful Camper & Nicholsons craftsmanship make her a valuable asset for an owner seeking a yacht that promises high-performance and ultra-comfortable living arrangements. She has successfully circumnavigated the world four times, a testament to her excellent performance capabilities. MUSTANG has an extraordinary combination of features including a cutter rig with four sails allowing various combinations to suit the weather. Full operational control of the yacht from the enclosed pilot house provides comfort and safety while cruising in inclement weather or rough seas. The outside helm station provides one-person control of the helm, sail furlers and primary sail trim. Her layout is incredibly versatile and demonstrates excellent use of available space. Almost $2 million was invested in MUSTANG from 2018-2022, providing a plethora of notable updates and upgrades of her exterior and interior. MUSTANG welcomes six guests onboard and up to three crewmembers, yet she can easily be sailed by two good sailors. From the cockpit, a door leads to the raised pilothouse/deck salon with 360-degree panoramic views. To starboard is the navigation area; instruments can be hidden when the space is being used as a deck salon. On the other side is an L-shaped settee, and a low coffee/cocktail table. An elegant railing and banisters for graceful stairs lead to the lower salon, fostering a remarkable sense of space and light. To port is a large dining table surrounded by an L-shaped settee and chairs. To starboard is a cocktail table with a curved settee and a lovely bar which can be formally tended if desired. Very few boats in this size range offer MUSTANG’s constellation of powerful world cruiser, sailing performance, cruising draft, versatility and refined living comfort.
Her guest accommodation layout comprises a full-beam master stateroom with a centerline queen-size bed, a port guest cabin with a full-size bed and a starboard cabin with twin beds. Outside the luxury yacht boasts an enormous on-deck cockpit for alfresco living. The center cockpit table has leaves that can be folded down or up for full dining. Guests will be in complete comfort thanks to cushioned seating and a Bimini with side closures to protect from inclement weather. Aft of the steering are cushions on the aft deck for sunning when the tender is deployed. Designed by Raymond Wall, SPIRIT OF SANGOMA was built in 1977 by Camper & Nicholsons. She is part of a small series of semi-custom oceanic ketches built by this prestigious British shipyard.
Her sturdy construction, waterlines, and fractional rigging allow for safe, comfortable, and fast navigation in any sea and wind condition.
This yacht has always been well-maintained and updated by her owners. A significant refit took place in 1999, during which the two powerful Perkins engines, currently on board, were installed. In 2012, she was purchased by her current owner, who carried out major renewal works, including the interior, at the Nautor Swan shipyard in Scarlino.
All onboard systems are in order and fully functional. Beautiful, for example, are the new (2023) custom stainless steel exhaust risers.
Below deck, there is an atmosphere of seafaring from another era. The abundant use of solid teak makes the interior luxurious and warm.
The raised dinette is cosy and bright, enjoying excellent views outside.
There is a master cabin aft and two VIP cabins, all with bathrooms. Forward, there’s a spacious crew/storage area with access from the deck as well.
Suitable for both owner and professional use, SPIRIT OF SANGOMA is a yacht that leaves no one indifferent.
Owner’s Comments
I bought the yacht in 2012 and made an important first refit at the Nautor Swan headquarters at Marina di Scarlino. All functional parts of SPIRIT OF SANGOMA have seen restoration as has most of her interior.
SPIRIT OF SANGOMA has always remained in the Mediterranean around Greece, the Balearic Islands, the Côte d’Azur and Sardinia. She is really an excellent solution for sailing or motor navigation.
The yacht is composed of three guest cabins with independent bathrooms and a double crew cabin with bathroom – all very practical cabins. There is a spacious cabin with 2 person sofa and chart area. The kitchen is very large and includes two refrigerators, an icebox, Bosch oven from 2021, microwave, two burner stove and two electric hot plates, garbage disposal and washing machine.
The outdoor table is very practical, foldable and comfortable for 6 people or more.
Two water tanks with total capacity of 2800 litres and two diesel tank with total capacity of 2400 litres allow for autonomy of navigation of around 750 miles.

MUSTANG for sale
MUSTANG is a true performance world cruiser with a successful history of being safe, reliable and comfortable. Her hull is the well-known hull of Doug Peterson’s Ocean 80 series built at Southern Ocean Shipyard. To incorporate a large lazarette, the boat was extended three feet, then taken for fitting at the Camper & Nicholsons Shipyard. MUSTANG showcases many modern features and amenities and is in incredible condition, courtesy of her serious year-long refit and detailed upgrades over the last few years.
MUSTANG is ideal for an owner seeking a unique sailing yacht that has the capabilities to last a lifetime, as well as ease of handling as she can be sailed with just two-to-three sailors. The yacht is a combination of a global cruiser with a pilothouse/deck salon and at the same time offers exceptional sailing performance. MUSTANG has been around the world four times, a testament to her durability and sailing capabilities. She is properly built to take on the most treacherous seas of the Southern Ocean and her suite of four sails gives excellent options for sail configuration to fit the weather. Full operational control of the yacht from the enclosed pilot house provides comfort and safety while cruising in inclement weather or rough seas. The outside helm station provides one-person control of the helm, sail furlers and primary sail trim. Her shallow draft under 10’ (3m) allows easy access to cruising grounds. MUSTANG was one of the first to have opened up the division between a pilothouse and lower salon, contributing to her versatility. To this day, this popular layout allows guests to utilize every available space, from the upper and lower salons to the cockpit outside.
From 2018-2022, almost $2 million dollars was invested in MUSTANG. In 2019, her rig was out and her mast and boom were refurbished and painted. She received new teak decks and cap rails, new winches, hatches and deck hardware. A new Lewmar winch package was installed and new Goiot deck hatches and port lights. MUSTANG’s new electronics include a B&G suite of a chart plotter and deck displays and a new AV system. All standing and running rigging was replaced and in 2020 she received new North 3Di sails. A Cummins engine and new Northern Lights generator were installed in 2021 and a new Onan generator in 2018. Her interior was refurbished or renewed from the air conditioning systems to the furnishings and soft goods. MUSTANG received all new safety gear including a new engine room fire suppression system and new life rafts. On her exterior, her hull and superstructure were painted and new antifoul bottom paint and Propspeed were applied in 2022.
MUSTANG is spacious for her size, boasting a similar layout and design to much larger vessels. Honey-colored teak is seen throughout her interior, complemented by simple detailing. Her enclosed pilothouse/upper salon offers 360-degree views and is a lovely place for guests to enjoy conversations at the L-shaped settee. Elegant stairs lead to the main salon below, where guests will find a six-person teak dining table, a wonderful curved bar and plenty of cabinetry for storage. A rounded cabinet opens to glass mosaic mirrors where glassware is stored, a unique feature that makes life onboard extra special. A curved corner settee with a cocktail table acts as a great conversation or lounging area.
Forward of the lower salon is the galley which features all the necessary amenities for life onboard as well as a crew mess. Farther forward are two crew cabins; the port one can be configured to a double bed or put a pipe cot as another single if necessary and the starboard one has over/under bunks. They share a large head forward. All guest staterooms are situated aft for up to six guests. From the pilothouse, stairs lead down to a corridor to the aft full-width master stateroom, two guest staterooms and engine room access. The master stateroom is luxurious with a centerline queen bed, settees on each side, closets, cabinets and drawers for plenty of storage. The settee on the port side can convert to a 6’ sea berth. A built-in desk with a seat is on the starboard side. Various types of lighting permit reading or create a mood. The en-suite bath provides a huge enclosed shower and mirrored cabinets. Moving forward, the port guest stateroom has a full-sized bed, hanging locker, drawers and cabinets for storage as well as an en-suite bath with a stall shower and mirrored cabinets. A door from the head to the hall gives this head the flexibility to be a day head. The starboard stateroom has twin beds with a bureau between them. The ensuite head with the usual amenities also houses the washer/dryer and access through the guest shower to the engine room.
MUSTANG has an enormous on-deck cockpit for outside living with an elevated steering area aft. A refrigerated compartment in the table makes life super simple. A Bimini and side closures ensure protection during inclement weather. For those who wish to sunbathe, there are cushions on the aft deck when the tender is deployed and farther aft is an additional conversation area when additional chairs are set up. The forward deck provides ample room for guests to congregate at the dock or under sail.
