aspen power catamarans

Aspen Power Catamarans is the manufacturer of the Aspen C120. The company promises that with every catamaran you purchase, you receive excellent fuel economy, a safe and comfortable ride, a sturdy and well-built boat, and a spacious deck. The Aspen C120 is nothing short of one of the best models that Aspen Power Catamarans has put forth yet and is breathtaking all around.

The boat is designed to push new boundaries and take you on any adventure that you want to go. Each C120 comes with a patented proa hull, which offers supreme efficiency and stability out on the water. The C120 is the largest model in the lineup and offers plenty to keep you and your guests stunned, comfortable, and boating in luxury.

Aspen has created the C120 as a special design that is meant to bring every boater’s dream to life. The hull of this boat is designed to effortlessly take on any rough waters as it packs 70 percent more roll stability making it a safe boating experience for everyone on board.

Boaters who are looking for an ample amount of room on board will be impressed with the 600 square feet of living and deck space. With performance numbers that will blow the competition away, it is no wonder that many boaters have chosen and continue to choose the Aspen C120.

If you are considering a new boat, definitely check out our in-depth review of the Aspen C120 below. We delve into the interior features, engine, pricing, and more to help you better decide if this is the right vessel for you, your family, friends, and passengers.

Interior and Accessories

One of the most impressive features of the 2024 Aspen C120 is that it comes with a whopping 600 square feet of deck and living space. This allows you and your passengers to fully enjoy themselves without the worry of feeling cramped or out of space.

As we have mentioned, this boat is designed for comfort, and trust us, you won’t mind spending extended stays out on the water with this vessel. Aspen created this boat with luxury in mind and you can expect to find that every detail, amenity, and feature meets the mark when it comes to delivering what you want and need from a boat.

The seating is made from plush and beautifully designed leather upholstery that is both durable and made for extended use. The interior cabinets are made from teak, which really stands out when paired with the neutral colors inside. For those who like to mix up and serve drinks on the boat, you will thoroughly fall in love with the interior bar. The bar area features swing-out bar stools that can be hidden when not in use. There is an additional reclining dinette seat found in this area as well.

Inside of the cabin area are accommodations to sleep 7 people comfortably. There are a total of three private cabins. The cabin at the port hull includes a twin berth, the cabin at starboard includes a queen berth and is considered the stateroom, and at the forward is the master suite with a king-size berth.

There are two heads located on board that include a toilet, shower, sink, and light. Each head has a door for privacy.

Inside the main cabin area is a salon that features a full galley to the port side and a dinette area to the starboard side. The full galley is equipped with a 3-burner propane stove and oven, microwave, and a refrigerator and freezer combo. For safety, you will find three smoke detectors and three CO2 sensors within the main galley area. The dinette area is equipped with a table that features four cup holders and an electric lift. The table does have a folding leaf top, which means you can extend the size of the table to accommodate all passengers at once.

At the rear of the boat is a larger swim platform allowing easy access into and out of the water. You will find a four-step swim ladder here as well.

There are side decks that run alongside the cockpit area that are spacious enough to walk freely without worry. Stainless steel handrails flow along the side decks to add an extra layer of comfort. The handrails sit 1.5 inches in height.

One of the most notable and attractive features of the 2024 Aspen C120 is the flybridge. This area is covered with a complete Bimini hard top for ultimate shade. On the flybridge, you will find seating for four passengers and the captain. This social hangout will be the perfect spot and keep your guests talking. There is a dinette on the flybridge for your dining pleasure. The flybridge also features a second-level deck with the option to add additional seats and a table.

The elevated view from the flybridge is breathtaking and there is no doubt that you will probably spend the majority of your time up here.

Throughout the boat, you will find plenty of storage space that allows you to keep everything out of sight and safe, especially when you want to pick up speed on the water. The interior cabins all feature spacious storage and closet areas.

Within the cockpit, the captain will enjoy 100 square feet of space that is adorned with a comfortable captain’s chair and a large console that is easy to read and use. You will be able to access all of the information needed about your boat right before your eyes. Surrounding the cockpit is a frameless windshield that has a glass door and side windows.

Additional Features Included on the 2024 Aspen C120:

  • Bow and stern thrusters with joysticks
  • Corian counters
  • Blinds and shades
  • Propane tank
  • LED courtesy lights
  • Raw water wash down
  • Water heater

When it comes to performance, Aspen did not miss the mark with the C120. Handling of the boat is flawless and easy making it every boater’s dream to drive. You will find that the boat itself flows seamlessly across the water due to the asymmetrical hulls that have been designed for stability. One of the hulls is roughly 35 percent larger than the other to help deliver that stable feeling all the way around. The hull near the portside is designed to take on the engine’s force and counter it so that your vessel will remain straight no matter how much get up and go you give it at the throttle.

The 2024 Aspen C120 comes standard with a single Volvo Penta D6 330 HP diesel engine. The engine works hard to deliver the performance, acceleration, and speed that you have come to love from Aspen. Aspen ran a set of performance tests to ensure that boaters would have a full understanding of how the 2024 Aspen C120 performs. The test information is as follows:

The test was run with 10 percent reserves:

  • At an engine speed of 600 RPM, and boat speed at 3.6 MPH, the fuel burn rate is 12 MPG, with a range of 2,376.
  • At an engine speed of 1,000 RPM, and boat speed at 6.1 MPH, the fuel burn rate is 8.71 MPG, with a range of 1,725.4.
  • At an engine speed of 1,500 RPM, and boat speed at 9.1 MPH, the fuel burn rate is 4.79 MPG, with a range of 948.3.
  • At an engine speed of 2,000 RPM, and boat speed at 11.3 MPH, the fuel burn rate is 2.31 MPG, with a range of 456.6.
  • At an engine speed of 2,500 RPM, and boat speed at 17.5 MPH, the fuel burn rate is 2.07 MPG, with a range of 410.
  • At an engine speed of 3,000 RPM, and boat speed at 22.85 MPH, the fuel burn rate is 1.63 MPG, with a range of 323.2.
  • At an engine speed of 3,500 RPM, and boat speed at 25.3 MPH, the fuel burn rate is 1.48 MPG, with a range of 292.3.
  • At an engine speed of 3,530 RPM, and boat speed at 27.15 MPH, the fuel burn rate is 1.23 MPG, with a range of 244.4.

It does not look like Aspen offers an engine upgrade for the C120; however, it is best to speak with an authorized dealer to learn more about your options. The standard engine that is equipped on the C120 offers powerful acceleration and good fuel economy.

  • Sleeping accommodations for 7 people
  • Perfect boat for weekends and extended getaways
  • Full galley with a side-by-side refrigerator and freezer
  • Propane 3-burner stove and oven
  • Plenty of storage
  • Large deck and living space

  • Boat Reviews

This article originally appeared in the May 2021 issue of 48° North.

There’s only one way to start this. Deep breath. To my knowledge, this is the first powerboat review that 48° North has ever done. Stay with me…

I often save opinions such as these for the end of a boat test article, but it feels important to share this right up front. I think the Aspen C100 is stinkin’ cool. Moreover, the whole design concept is sophisticated, and the construction is modern and uncompromising. That Aspen Power Catamarans are built in Washington state by a family-run business founded by the guy who came up with the big idea — well it doesn’t get much more perfectly PNW.

To understand the Aspen C100, you’ve got to understand Aspen’s innovations, and to do that, you’ve got to know founder and designer, Larry Graf. Larry is an innovator, but not in that crazy cackling genius way. Touring the factory, he confidently strode from building to building describing every tiny detail of the design and construction. Who says you can’t be an expert on everything?

aspen power catamarans

The boats are built to exacting standards. Larry proudly showed me the bonus incentives his boat building staff can achieve with benchmarks not just for time, but for quality. It’s clear that the decisions in construction were not made by the finance department. With delight and minute particulars, Larry unveiled his Aspen composite system, noting several times along the way which materials were more expensive, but worth it. From the gelcoat to the foam, the woven roving to the kevlar in the bow — quality materials precede careful craftsmanship. It’s a part of the sales pitch, of course, but Larry’s own C100 came off the truck on the highway, hit a concrete median, and the boat won. I’d say they’re built like a brick sh*thouse, but brick would be way too heavy.

In all of this, Larry was committed to efficiency. He sought to minimize weight and drag, and maximize a strong design with smart construction and a sea kindly motion thanks to wave piercing hulls, while delivering power and fuel economy.

So that’s why I think the C100 is a great first powerboat to explore in the pages of 48° North . This is sailor-level design and construction geekery, utilizing a hull concept that ancient sailors pioneered. And, this is a cruising boat — inboard diesel, king size berth, a standard solar package, with impressive seaworthiness and range for its size — that can take you well into the wild. All of this taps into something very common among sailors: we want to feel the freedom to adventure in remote places, and we want a boat that can handle conditions worse than we humans actually want to expose ourselves to.

Well, after taking the C100 out for a spin on a summery April afternoon, I’d say it hits those marks in spades, and you might have to call me a Kool-Aid sipper. So, what is this particular boat all about?

The C100 is not one of Aspen’s newest designs. In fact, it was the second design they started producing back in 2013. It remains, however, a staple in their line, and for good reason.

The C100 is an accessible and versatile size. At 32 feet (34′ 8″ overall with the substantial swim platform), it has some big boat feel — it was very comfortable powering through wind chop and wake. It has big boat amenities like a bow thruster and windlass; and it provides comfortable cruising accommodations for a couple or a small family both indoors and out, including the aforementioned king size forward berth.

Meanwhile, everything about the boat feels manageable. Its 10-foot beam makes it reasonably trailerable, and it doesn’t need an extra-wide slip. Its dry weight is 9,300 pounds, it draws less than 3 feet, and its propeller is protected by a skeg. Not that you ever want to hit a log or, worse, a rock… but if you were going to do it, this might be a boat that can withstand it.

aspen power catamarans

Like so many sailing catamarans, the Aspen C100 accomplishes a seamless flow between the cockpit and interior living space. In addition to the door between the two, the new C100s have a hinging window panel to starboard of the door. When they’re both open, the salon has a decidedly open-air feel.

The salon itself is simple and elegant — the galley with lots of clever storage is to port, balanced by the dinette   to starboard. The helm and controls are forward. Follow the stairs to starboard from there to find the forward berth and the enclosed wet head.

Under another of those cockpit sole lockers, you find the 220 horsepower Volvo Penta D3. Between the engine’s power and the design’s low weight and hydrodynamic efficiency, the Volvo provides plenty of juice for cruising at a variety of speeds. Care was taken to soundproof the engine compartment as much as possible, and this really matters. I wondered how much louder the engine noise would be with the salon door and back window open (how you’d want it during the prime cruising season) versus closed. Surprisingly, cruising at about 15 knots and just over 3,000 rpm, the decibel meter indicated 76 decibels with door and window closed and only 79 when they were open. For context, our speaking voices were pushing into the low 80s on to that meter. This is to say that, for all of its power, the engine is quiet.

I was very impressed by the performance. The boat climbed to speeds in the high teens smoothly and effortlessly, and didn’t have the jarring motion I’ve known in some speedy powerboats. It felt very stiff. It was simple to drive, and the helm was responsive to adjustment. When pressed into a turn at higher speeds, the C100 felt rock-solid stable. More importantly, it did what the asymmetric design brief prescribes: it tracked straight with no input from the helm.

aspen power catamarans

To paint a real-life picture: in 2014, Larry circumnavigated Vancouver Island in a C100, nonstop without refueling (he employed jerry cans and ultimately burned 267 gallons). He took 47 hours and 5 minutes to complete the 557-mile route. That’s really key to me. This is a boat that can go places — yes, quickly — in efficient comfort and style.

Cruising the Pacific Northwest, Inside Passage, and Alaska is just about the best thing you can do — whether you travel under sail or power. If power is your choice, the Aspen C100 would be among the best options to live thatcruising dream.

Discover the Top Power Catamarans for 2024

  • By Yachting Staff
  • Updated: September 10, 2024

Power catamarans have seen a surge in popularity, growing both in size and appeal. These cruise-focused yachts offer homelike comfort, fuel efficiency and user-friendly operation, making them a favorite among avid travelers. Their popularity extends to the bareboat charter market for the same reasons.

In this article, we explore the world’s top power catamarans, ranging from a 36-footer ideal for a cruising couple to a 78-footer perfect for entertaining friends and family. The propulsion options are diverse, including outboards, diesel inboards, hybrids, and even all-solar setups.

Top Luxury Power Catamarans

The following power catamarans are all vessels we’ve reviewed. They are listed in no particular order.

  • Fountaine Pajot MY44 : A family-oriented cat suitable for long-range cruising and aimed at owner-operators.
  • Silent Yachts 60 : This is a catamaran that can cruise comfortably for long distances using emissions-free solar-electric propulsion.
  • Horizon PC74 : With interior and deck space like a much larger vessel, the PC74 is perfect for cruising the Bahamas and Caribbean.
  • Aquila 36 : This beefy 36-footer is an outboard-powered, express-cruiser-style catamaran.
  • Lagoon Seventy 8 Powercat : A spacious design, this vessel fits the volume of a 130-foot-long monohull into just 78 feet of length overall.
  • Horizon PC68 : This cat has a stable ride, long range, volume to spare and intriguing layout options.
  • Two Oceans 555 : An elegantly simple yet luxurious 55-foot custom with the space and amenities of a much larger vessel.
  • Lagoon 630 : From its open salon to its spacious decks, the Lagoon is a comfortable and luxurious platform.
  • Fountaine Pajot MY5 : A midsize cruiser with serious big-boat space for family and friends.
  • Prestige Yachts M8 : The voluminous 65-footer lets owners customize onboard spaces.
  • Aquila 47 Molokai : Calling all anglers: This cat has 60-plus-knot speed and is set up for serious bluewater adventure.

Fountaine Pajot MY44

The  Fountaine Pajot MY44 , a creation of Italian architect Pierangelo Andreani and French designer Daniel Andrieu, has a main deck that’s open from the aft-deck seating all the way forward to the starboard helm station. The sense of spaciousness is significant, for several reasons. First, four glass panels aft can all slide to port, creating an indoor-outdoor space with the aft deck and salon. In the salon, 32-inch-high windows extend for 12 feet down the sides of the yacht, with three sections per side, bringing in natural light along with the three forward panes that comprise the windshield. Finally, 6-foot-6-inch headroom provides vertical clearance, with a 21-foot-7-inch beam that adds interior roominess while keeping the yacht stable.

Silent Yachts 60

Solar panels, ocean-crossing range and self-sufficiency define the electric Silent-Yachts 60 power catamaran. If there was any question that the “Tesla moment” has arrived in yachting, the Silent 60 clearly provides a positive response. Consider, for a moment, crossing oceans in silence at 5 to 6 knots without consuming a drop of fuel and never needing to plan your course between fuel stops. Imagine sitting at anchor and running the air conditioning all night, not to mention all the galley appliances plus the washer-dryer, without the hum or fumes from a genset.

Horizon PC74

As founder and director of The Powercat Company, a Horizon Power Catamarans distributor, Stuart Hegerstrom had long believed that catamaran builders needed to design their yachts to more stylish standards.

“The boats were very boxy,” he says, based on his years of experience with cats in the charter market. He and his partner, Richard Ford, asked Horizon to produce models that had high-end finishes and looked good inside and out.

The Horizon team brought in mega-yacht designer JC Espinosa to work with its own craftsmen. The result aboard the  Horizon PC74  is a catamaran with exterior styling, layout and functionality that should appeal to private and charter owners alike.

The Aquila 36  is a departure from her sisterships in that she is an outboard-powered, express-cruiser-style catamaran, but she also adheres to MarineMax’s philosophies.

With a single main living level from bow to stern and a beam of 14 feet 7 inches, the Aquila 36 is like a bowrider on steroids. She has seating that can handle 20 adults for outings and barbecues, and there are two staterooms below, one in each hull, for family weekending. The staterooms have nearly queen-size berths, en suite heads, stowage and 6-foot-6-inch headroom.

Lagoon Seventy 8 Powercat

Lagoon is a division of Groupe Beneteau, the world’s largest builder of sailing yachts, and the  Lagoon Seventy 8 Powercat  is a developmental sistership of its Seventy 7 super sailing cat. The Seventy series yachts are built at Construction Navale Bordeaux in France, which had to add a new yard to construct these catamarans because they require separate stern molds for the power and sail versions.

Horizon PC68

Multihull yachts ride differently than monohulls, often counteracting the sea’s motion for a smoother, more stable ride. On the Horizon PC68 , sharp hull entries make head seas seem gentle, and a Humphree stabilization system with blades reduces roll. Horizon uses SCRIMP construction for resin saturation that maximizes strength with an 111,112-pound displacement. And with a 5-foot-4-inch draft, the PC68 invites island cruising.

Two Oceans 555

With 27-knot speed, house-like volume, an on-deck master and top-tier tech, the Two Oceans 555 is a formidable power catamaran. Dave Jirikovic of HMY Yachts was on a quest. The sales broker was looking for the meanest, nastiest patch of Gulf Stream he could find to show a potential client what the Two Oceans 555 power cat could handle. And just as he had intended to show us, the broad-shouldered power cat didn’t even notice. He even dropped the single-lever throttles back to idle and left the 25-foot-wide Two Oceans 555 beam-on to another set of square-edged seas. The 55-footer brushed that off too. Jirikovic tried quartering into the seas—never a happy angle for catamarans—and the yacht drowsed through them.

Fitted with the optional twin 300-horsepower Volvo Penta D4 diesels, the  Lagoon 630 MY  burns only 1.64 gph total at 6 knots, giving a theoretical range of 2,952 nautical miles with standard tankage of 793 gallons. Hull No. 1 had an optional 502-gallon tank, giving it transatlantic range.

Luxury, stability and economy are all hallmarks of Lagoon’s return to luxury motor yachts. If you can take a ride, it will be worth your time.

Fountaine Pajot MY5

The flybridge deck on the Fountaine Pajot MY5 is a standout feature, offering virtually unobstructed 360-degree ocean views and an elevated beach club vibe. Aft of the off-center starboard helm is a spacious area perfect for entertaining, complete with a wet bar, refrigeration center, and ample seating. It’s the most popular space aboard according to the builder. And if the weather turns for the worse, a second helm station in the saloon allows the skipper to pilot the MY5 in climate-controlled comfort.

Prestige Yachts M8

How fitting it was that Prestige Yachts introduced its new M-Line flagship, the M8 , at Portopiccolo, a picturesque yachting village outside Trieste, Italy. Formerly a quarry, the cliff-side area had been chiseled into a clean site rife with eye-catching vistas, much like the French builder’s 65-foot power catamaran and its nearly 3,000 square feet of usable real estate.

With every boat, there’s an origin story. In the case of the Aquila 47 Molokai power catamaran, it starts with MarineMax, which saw people renting boats for bareboat charters. MarineMax Vacations was born. After experimenting with several production yachts, the company decided to build its own: the Aquila line, designed for charter as well as for sale to owner-operators.

Aspen Power Closes Inaugural Solar ITC Transfer Deal

Aspen Power Leverages ITC Flexibility to Unlock New Financing Opportunities for Solar Projects

NEW YORK, September 19, 2024 — Aspen Power , a leading distributed generation platform dedicated to building the clean energy future, today announced the successful closing of the company’s first solar Investment Tax Credit (ITC) transfer deal. The transaction with private investor Dan Kalafatas monetized the ITCs generated by five projects located across California and New York.

“This ITC transfer deal is a pivotal milestone for Aspen Power, underscoring our ability to navigate the evolving complexities of solar finance,” said Bill DeLong, Chief Financial Officer, Aspen Power. “By leveraging this innovative structure, we not only fortify our existing portfolio but also unlock new pathways for future growth and strategic development. This transaction sets a precedent for how Aspen Power will continue to drive value and innovation in the renewable energy sector,” DeLong added.

The transaction’s structure spans both 2023 and 2024 projects, showcasing Aspen Power’s ability to adapt and capture value across multiple tax years. The innovative structure enables Aspen to optimize project returns ensuring steady growth while maximizing the value of the credits.

Recent changes to the Investment Tax Credit (ITC) under the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) have expanded the flexibility and scalability of financing for solar projects. The extension and expansion of the ITC to allow direct transferability enables solar developers like Aspen Power to transfer tax credits to third-party investors, providing a new way to monetize these credits without relying solely on traditional tax equity investors. By “selling” the tax credits generated by its solar projects to private investors who can use them to reduce their tax liabilities, Aspen Power gains immediate cash flow, which it reinvests into new projects, fueling further growth in the renewable energy sector.

Aspen Power continues to lead the way in distributed generation, having developed or acquired more than 600 renewable energy projects across 26 states in its pursuit to build the clean energy future.

The C100 has a roomy cockpit that’s the ideal multifunction space, transitioning from welcoming aboard guests for a fun day on the water or spending the day fishing.

The C100 Escape has a comfortable salon area with galley to port and a dinette to starboard.

Aspen C100

The dinette seats four and converts to a double berth, while the galley is equipped with a propane stove, oven, and a refrigerator. Accommodations include a master forward with a king-size berth, and a separate enclosed head with shower, and there’s a quarter-berth beneath the galley. The 220-horsepower Volvo Penta D3 is mounted just abaft the salon bulkhead and reduces noise levels to make the C100 exceptionally quiet under way. The spacious cockpit is designed for fishing or entertaining with standard features including a refrigerator and a sink, a built-in, 96-quart Igloo cooler with a large seat, and generous stowage in port and starboard lazarettes. The C100 hull is special, designed with substantial buoyancy that adds travel to the boat’s suspension system for large-sea passage-making. C100 owners are set to make weeklong adventure trips, island to island, or cruise vast open coastlines with speed, comfort, and efficiency.
