Titchmarsh, Walton-on-the-Naze, Essex
Titchmarsh marina serves a marshy area of essex coast, famously the setting of an arthur ransome classic..
Open up a copy of Arthur Ransome’s Secret Water and put it next to a chart of the Walton Backwaters and you’ll see an uncanny likeness. The author might have changed the names of some of the locations but this part of the Essex coast was the setting for several of his books and is a destination for cruisers who like leisurely exploring.
The backwaters comprise 7,000 acres of mudflats, salt marsh and creeks (the Maldon salt you may have in your kitchen cupboard is harvested nearby) and have been designated a national nature reserve and internationally important wetland.
As such it’s a wildlife haven – look out for seals at Oakley Creek and migrating Canada geese coming in to roost.
There’s only one full marina in the area – Titchmarsh, at Walton-on-the-Naze – but plenty of sheltered anchoring spots, with good holding in the mud. Other things to do include taking tea at the Naze Tower seamark built in 1720, fossil-hunting at the Naze itself (you are guaranteed to find a shark’s tooth, says harbourmaster Steve Hall), going for a ride on the James Stevens , the world’s oldest motor lifeboat, enjoying the seaside delights of Frinton-on-Sea and, for the more active, Walton Pier’s funfair or even kiteboarding lessons.

Look for Pye End buoy and follow the marks in. Don't be tempted to cut across Pye Sands without local knowledge - this is East Coast shallows, marsh and mud territory. Stone Point, with its popular anchorage, is the sandy beach in this image
Family-run and independent marina
The marina is run by the Titchmarsh family, who began digging the first basin in the late 1960s. There are 420 berths, and a pontoon for 45ft yachts, but here's a sill (soft mud, minimum 1.0m) at the entrance
World's oldest surviving motor lifeboat
The James Stevens 14 is a lifeboat built around 1900 and fitted with a 40-hp Blake engine in 1905. She has been restored and takes customers out on cruises.
Naze Cliffs
The Naze headland and promontory house the Naze Tower, a sea mark erected in 1720, where you can take tea.
The marina runs a continuous programme of dredging. If you're in doubt about timing your entry over the sill, ring the harbourmaster on VHF Ch 80

Titchmarsh Marina - Eddie J. Dec 17, 2010 Titchmarsh Marina is located around the back of Walton on the Naze accessible via the Walton Backwaters. Care must be taken when approaching the entrance to the creek when approaching from Felixstowe, as the shallow water is everywhere, only head towards the marina with the incoming tide.
The marina is run by the Titchmarsh family, who began digging the first basin in the late 1960s. There are 420 berths, and a pontoon for 45ft yachts, but here's a sill (soft mud, minimum 1.0m) at the entrance. The James Stevens 14 is a lifeboat built around 1900 and fitted with a 40-hp Blake engine in 1905.
Broker Remarks. Seamaster 925 Sailing yacht for sale. Designed by Holman and Pye, Seamaster Ltd built over 170 of the Seamaster 925's, they have proven to be good solid cruising yachts which are "well mannered and rewarding to sail".
