Near the Staniel Cay Yacht Club in the Exuma Cays, you’ll find a colony of swimming pigs. These animals are descendants of farm pigs on Big Major Cay. They’ve since learned to swim and survive in the wild, and can often be seen lounging on the beach or enjoying visitors on Pig Beach.

Where is the Thunderball Grotto?

The Thunderball Grotto is located in Staniel Cay, Bahamas.  It is a popular spot for free diving and snorkeling, and is also the site of the 1967 James Bond film “Thunderball”.

SCYC Marina Rules and Policies

Dockage: SCYC cannot guarantee a particular slip, even with a reservation. However, we will do our best to accommodate requests. Dockage may be at either our South Dock (the main dock) or our North Dock (the fuel dock). Dockage Rates are based on the length of the vessel including swim platform and bow spread, not the length of the vessel at the waterline. Rates do not change if part of a vessel extends beyond the end of the dock. Rafted boats (if permitted by management) do not receive discounted rates.

Day Trips: If you leave the dock for a day trip, and return later, you may or may not have exactly the same slip. In this instance, dock hands will assist with movement of lines, fenders, new water/electric readings, etc. As out docks are “side-to” rather than back-in slips, changes in arrivals and departures involving yachts of different sizes sometimes necessitate such slip changes. Changing slips while staying in the marina: Again, due to the “side-to” nature of our marina, sometimes we must ask a marina customer to shift to a different slip. This is done only so that we can accommodate other customers and all efforts are made to minimize such moves. But sometimes they are necessary and our dock hands will assist in this instance to minimize the inconvenience.

Electric Charges: Electricity is metered. If a reading is not taken at the time of tie up and plug-in, you will be billed at the prevailing, minimum daily rates depending on the size of the plug, and the phase of the power. Three-phase power will be billed at a 30% premium over the prevailing single-phase flat rate. In the case where a meter has malfunctioned and not advanced, the flat daily rate will also apply. Electricity rates (per kwh) may change without notice. Late Check-outs: Check-out time is 11 a.m. Check-in time is 2 p.m. Late check-outs, are sometimes but not always possible, AND must be approved in advance by management. Late checkouts, if approved, are billed another day dockage.

Water Charges: Our water is metered. Please make sure a dock hand takes a beginning reading before you use water. All water is purified by an on-site Watermakers, Inc desalination plant and ozonated. It is never mingled with rainwater, well water, or any other source of water.

Damage to Dock: Any damage to the docks caused by a vessel will be the responsibility of the vessel involved. If tide or weather conditions are questionable, it is the captain’s responsibility to make this determination. Damage to the facility will be charged to the boat which causes the damage at local replacement cost.

Damage to Vessels while docking or while docked: SCYC is never responsible for damage that occurs to Vessels or tenders while docked or in the process of docking. Among other factors, strong current and changing winds can cause fenders to shift. Also, unpredictable changes in wind direction might cause rough conditions at the dock. Broken planks, protruding bolts, etc. (while addressed by our staff as soon as we see the issue) can periodically present a hazard to gelcoats and rubrails. It is the responsibility of the captain of the vessel to check for such hazards and make the necessary adjustments in handling or securing the vessel such as to avoid them. Adjustments to lines and fenders are often necessary during the course of any stay and should be checked frequently.

Checkout: 10:00 a.m.

Open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Separate, dedicated fuel dock with high-speed pumps.

Internet: Available in the Clubhouse for registered Marina and Hotel guests (complimentary).

Day Trips: If you leave the dock for a day trip, and return later, you may or may not have exactly the same slip. In this instance, dock hands will assist with the movement of lines, fenders, new water/electric readings, etc. As our docks are “side-to” rather than back-in slips, changes in arrivals and departures involving yachts of different sizes sometimes necessitate such slip changes.

Fishing: Absolutely no fishing is permitted in the marina area … either from the dock or from vessels tied to the dock. The nurse sharks are pets. Any person or vessel seen harassing them will be asked to leave. Please note: by Bahamian law, nothing may be taken from the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park waters and this includes fishing of any kind. All guests are responsible for knowing Bahamian fishing regulations (click here for more information).

If you enjoy fishing, this is the place to be. Bonefish out at Harvey Cay or in Pipe Creek, both just a few minutes away. For deep-sea fishing, the expansive water of the Exuma Sound is full of grouper, snapper, dolphin, tuna and more. For the fit and adventurous, try free-diving and spear-fishing for lobster and grouper. Please note: by Bahamian law, nothing may be taken from the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park waters and this includes fishing of any kind. All guests are responsible for knowing Bahamian fishing regulations (listed below).

For kids, try bottom fishing for snappers and other smaller fish. They will enjoy non-stop action during this unforgettable experience.

Ice and Bait

Ice $6/bag. Bait (rigged ballyhoo and squid) is available.

Trash charges are $6/bag (+tax). All trash should be put in the designated trailer behind the clubhouse. Please DO NOT leave trash bags in any other area on the dock or property. Please alert our staff as to the number of bags you dispose of so that the applicable charges can be billed.

Drone Use: Due to privacy and safety concerns, drone use is strictly prohibited anywhere on and around the property and docks at SCYC. By law, use of drones anywhere in the Bahamas requires a special permit and registration with Bahamas Civil Aviation. See Bahamas drone policy BASR Schedule 27 for more information.

Weather: Because SCYC docks are exposed to the west, it may become necessary to vacate the docks in the event of strong west/northwest winds. Management will do its best to give notice when this is forecast. For your convenience, SCYC posts Chris Parker’s 3-4 day weather forecast in the clubhouse every day (except Sunday). We also post the Windfinder forecast. Please ask at the bar if you do not see that day’s forecasts posted.

Grilling: Grilling on the North Dock (fuel dock) is not permitted, either on board or on the dock itself. Grilling on your boat on the South Dock (main dock) is permitted, provided that the smoke is not a nuisance to neighbors. If you grill, please monitor wind conditions and be considerate of your neighbors and very conscious of any tenders/gasoline nearby.

Music: Loud music is not permitted at the marina (or anywhere on SCYC property). Music played at a low level is fine. As a rule, music is defined as “too loud” if your neighbors can a) hear it and/or b) might possibly be bothered by it.

From Paris to the Caribbean, use these travel ideas to plan your next trip

  • Cindy Cockburn Tampa Bay Times

SeaDream Yacht Club – Caviar, Champagne and barbecue

All SeaDream Yacht Club voyages in the Caribbean include a signature Champagne & Caviar Splash beach party. Executive chef Elton Tabaj and his galley team transport the five-star kitchen from the yacht to the beach. Passengers are served a lavish beach barbecue, cooked to perfection. All guests don bathing suits and the captain joins in for an informal day playing Robinson Crusoe. In fact, be prepared to get soaking wet. You will arrive on the island via a Zodiac boat that shuttles passengers from the yacht directly to the white, sandy beach. I attended the beach party in White Bay on Jost Van Dyke in the British Virgin Islands during a recent cruise. What a great way to spend a winter afternoon! And the best part? Skip the high resort rates and book the intimate cruise with only 150 passengers.

Paris is always a good idea

The Olympics may be over, but we still can’t get enough of the French. A recent report from GlobalData announced that France is on track to become the most visited country by 2025, when 93.7 million international travelers are expected to visit there.

Delta Air Lines offers several options while traveling from Tampa to Paris. I usually stop in Atlanta to connect with Air France for a seamless experience. I recently discovered a “secret” and luxurious way to get to Europe. Friends rave about the 10-year-old French boutique airline called La Compagnie. The flights only depart from Newark Liberty International Airport, but it’s totally worth the trip to New Jersey. Once on board, the plane offers 76 seats that all turn into flatbeds. It’s a business-class airline experience to Paris, Milan or Nice. And the food is marvelous.

For the ultimate Parisian culinary experience, secure a table at Le Jules Verne. Located at the top of the Eiffel Tower, the views are spectacular from this world-famous restaurant. Watch the calendar and make sure to book 90 days in advance and be prepared to pay ahead as well (a $500 deposit is the norm for a table for two). When you factor in the advantage of skipping the long entry line and the overall once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of dining in the Eiffel Tower, the experience is well worth the cost. Perched at a height of 410 feet, you will even have your own private elevator to the restaurant. The dress code, an elegant outfit and no shorts or sportswear, is strictly enforced. Suit jackets are mandatory for men.

Closer to home, Travel + Leisure magazine recently named St. Petersburg the Best Food City in the U.S. We found a tiny slice of Paris in St. Petersburg. When you check in to the newly renovated Vinoy Resort, you’ll be invited on Friday and Saturday from 3-5 p.m. to meet the new executive pastry chef Armand Berger and sample complimentary Champagne and nibbles from Lottie, the new patisserie located in the hotel’s lobby.

Tropic Ocean Airways salutes Jimmy Buffett Day

Tropic Ocean Airways is the largest commercial amphibious airline and is ready to entertain all Parrotheads. To celebrate Jimmy Buffett Day on Aug. 30, they are launching an epic package with Baker’s Cay Resort, a nature-inspired luxury resort on the Overseas Highway in Key Largo. Inspired by the legendary singer-songwriter, this unique trip offers a fun-filled adventure over Labor Day weekend and includes a one-way Tropic Ocean Airways seaplane adventure for two departing from Sheltair Terminal at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and landing at Baker’s Cay Resort. The three-night waterfront king guest room package is valid only from Aug. 30 through Sept. 2. It includes complimentary return shuttle service to Miami International Airport or Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

The Resort at Longboat Key Club

Having more space is a priority for families. Nearly three in five guests say being able to fit all their family members in one place is a major deciding factor when booking a vacation. Some of the top trending destinations near the water for families this summer are Melbourne, Australia and Nassau, Bahamas.

We already live in paradise with a variety of resort options just a short drive away, no passport required. We talked to Diane Lopez, the director of resort operations at The Resort at Longboat Key Club near Sarasota, where the Gulf waters are beautiful, the beach cabanas are huge and the suites are grand. The two-bedroom suites overlook the pool and the Gulf of Mexico with a living room that includes a queen-sized sleeper sofa, a full kitchen, a washer and dryer and a private balcony. Don’t miss Latitudes restaurant for delicious menu options in the resort, offering both “land” (a 16-ounce rib-eye steak) and “sea” (spiny lobster curry) options with Ed Geyfman as executive chef. Great to find out a kids dinner menu is available. Grown-ups will love checking out the resort’s Tavern & Whiskey Bar with over 100 different types of whiskey.

Sports are key here on the Key. Briana François is the director of racquet sports, tennis and pickleball and reports that there are eight new pickleball courts at the resort. They have lessons almost daily. The resort store supports local women-owned vendors. Peaceful tip: Check out the many treatment rooms and new sound therapy beds in the spa. Naps encouraged!

The perfect tropical getaway

Set on a tiny island in the middle of the Exuma Cays, Staniel Cay Yacht Club offers a laid-back, tranquil haven in the Bahamas, a place to simply relax, take a swim and enjoy a good meal

Surrounded by clear, turquoise water and fringed with white, sandy beaches, Staniel Cay is one of the jewels of the Bahamas, the image of the untouched tropical paradise and an essential stopover during your private yacht charter in the Exumas.

Established in 1956, the Staniel Cay Yacht Club is a boutique resort on the island's west coast, with a collection of brightly painted bungalows and a full-service marina where you can come ashore for lunch in the friendly and informal restaurant.

The shallow waters and protected coral reef around Staniel Cay also make it a great place for snorkelling, while just off shore, Thunderball Grotto - where the 1965 James Bond film of the same name was filmed - is one of the most stunning snorkelling sites in the Bahamas.

The perfect tropical hideaway

Staniel Cay is the image of the untouched tropical paradise and an essential stopover during your private yacht charter in the Exumas

If you are coming ashore for lunch or dinner, Staniel Cay Yacht Club in the Exumas has three inviting restaurants, as well as a convivial bar, which serves simple meals alongside its famous island cocktails.

The waterfront Sea Level restaurant is the place to go for a romantic, candle-lit dinner, while The Captain's Lounge, the resort's original dining area, is a more informal setting with no reservations required. Alternatively, the alfresco Deck offers fine views over the marina and is a great place to meet friends and toast the sunset with a glass of the club's signature rum punch.

Bahamian specialties such as conch and lobster are on the menu, as well as a wide choice of salads and international dishes including steak, lamb, burgers and sandwiches.

Staniel Cay Yacht Club is the ideal place to simply relax and experience the very best of Bahamian hospitality in a beautiful, unspoiled natural setting. You can begin planning your private yacht vacation now, by taking a look at all luxury yachts available for superyacht charter in the Bahamas .

Review for Staniel Cay Yacht Club

staniel cay yacht club restaurant

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at SCYC, both at the dock and on a mooring ball. Just wanted to point out that the marina does not have its own restrooms. You can use the restaurant bathrooms when they are open, but you are out of luck overnight.

$5.75/gal for diesel. On busy days, vessels queue up to the N of the fuel dock. We had to wait over an hour, holding station, to let the 4 boats ahead of us get fuel.

staniel cay yacht club restaurant

We stayed on a mooring ball here in the North Field for 4 days. The restaurant was great but the drinks were very high priced. We did enjoy the Peanut Pina Coloda. We also enjoyed the specials they had for the Super Bowl Sunday Party. The chicken wings were very small but had very good flavor. The buffet was a good amount of food and had some very good fish, chicken, and ribs. The mooring field was rolling a little at times but not too bad. The last night the winds shifted to coming from N/ NE. All boats who were near the current were swining in lots of directions all night. We were swinging over the top of our mooring ball. Also a couple of nights with winds 20 to 25, the people anchored in the current were dragging in the North anchorage. There are 3 nearby grocery stores all very well stocked. We got some amazing local made bread at the Pink Store. The mooring balls are first come first serve so pick up a ball then head into the office to register and pay.

I agree with all the other reviewers, but if you choose to pick up a mooring ball be prepared to be rocked all day. Large center console tour boats are in and out of the marina all day and they blast straight through the mooring field.

Stayed for 10 days at Staniel and had a very good time. Spent time snorkeling the Thunderball Gratto, went to pig beach and fished from our dingy. Staff here was very friendly and the food was good! Easy to dock and the nurse sharks are fun to watch and pet. With two stores on the island within walking distance it was easy to get provisions. If you can get through to them on the radio you may have to call in as them seem to miss several radio calls. Overall a great experience.

staniel cay yacht club restaurant

Nice marina and facilities, great restaurant. Docking can be hectic as it is a very, very busy marina. Staff very accommodating, would stay again.

Probably our favorite marina in Bahamas. Staff is efficient. Restaurant & bar are great and prices very reasonable. Groceries and laundry nearby. Can't stay on dock in a strong westerly.

Another great island to stop at. There are two stores near the marina (pink and blue buildings) to get all your grocery needs. The runway was in poor condition and closed when we visited last.

Can I use the boat as soon as I arrive?

The boats are available at the normal check-in time of 3 p.m. on your day of arrival. We use the time between check out and check in to do cleaning and maintenance on the boat, so it is ready for use for the next guest.  However, please check with the front desk to see if they may have a boat available for you to use, and if not, they will be happy to help you find a rental for a few hours until check-in.

Information on the Marina

Marina policies.

Open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Breaking news, this new, private caribbean resort comes with nantucket pedigree.

An island with a building on it, known as Lovango Resort and Beach Club in the USVI with New England pedigree

Even on a stormy day, Lovango , a small semi-private island resort in the US Virgin Islands, is beautiful. I arrived on the last rainy day in a week of rainy days. Picture-perfect tropical weather would come later, but the rain created colorful first impressions of deep greens and vibrant flowers.

Listening to the rain on the jungle canopy, I spent the afternoon drinking coffee in a low-slung chair on the porch of my private “tree house.”

In fact, the wooden cabin was tucked into the hillside, looking down at cerulean waves breaking on the private beach and Congo Cay, a restricted and undeveloped island bird sanctuary across the channel. I felt like I was the only person on the island.

A couple sitting on lounge chairs by a pool at Lovango, a private island resort owned by a famed Nantucket family.

Privacy was one of the big draws for the Snider family, Lovango’s owners and operators. Part of Little Gem Resorts, the Snider portfolio includes the Nantucket Hotel & Resort and the Winnetu Oceanside Resort in Martha’s Vineyard. Here, they’ve created an increasingly rare no-passport-necessary Caribbean sanctuary contrasting with the hulking cruise ships docked in nearby St. Thomas and the crowded beaches of St. John.

Lovango is the first newly built hotel in the US Virgin Islands in over 20 years and was designed to blend into the landscape, maximizing privacy while offering excellent and eco-friendly accommodations in varying levels of luxury.

From glamping tree houses to the private three-bedroom villa, the architecture blends brutalism with island whimsy. Poured-concrete rainfall showers, both indoor and outdoor, offer a modernist counterpoint to the soft wooden touches that allow the lodgings to disappear into the foliage.

The 20-room (and growing) resort — it debuted two new one-bedroom cottages this year — sits on 55 acres, roughly half the island.

A plate of fine foods on a table at Lovango Resort and Beach Club

It has two restaurants and a hilltop breakfast service, a bar, a private guest-only infinity pool overlooking the beach club, a group of small boutique shops, two famous snorkeling locations, hiking trails for those who want to walk and transportation for those who don’t. There are scuba charters, day trips to the British Virgin Islands and complimentary ferry service to and from nearby St. Thomas and St. John, should you feel trapped.

The Sniders have a laudable focus on sustainability that touches all parts of their operation. Everything from the plumbing to the sunscreen is designed to keep the island’s ecosystem healthy and restore inherited damage to the reefs.

They have also entered into a unique long-term partnership with Reef Response, a task force from the University of the Virgin Islands focused on studying resilience within reefs and rebuilding with climate change-resistant corals that encourage biodiversity. The project director, Dr. Marilyn Brandt, said that if things go well, Lovango’s reefs will be on track to be self-sustaining in just a few years.

A canopy bed at Lovango Resort and Beach Club

Building in an eco-friendly manner on an isolated island is a Herculean effort and Matt Snider has spent the better part of four years working to build the relaxed luxury destination it is today.

“Sustainability is at the heart of the Virgin Islands,” he explained. “We’ve painstakingly re-permitted everything to be in tune with the environment. The coral restoration is a part of that. It’s a no-brainer for us and the right way to do business. It even shows us that we can do better in Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket.”

But the synergy between their northeastern properties and the Caribbean is stronger than just eco-consciousness; many staff members work across Little Gem’s properties, offering familiar faces to repeat guests.

What comes out of the pot is a resort that by its very nature isn’t five-star everything. That’s not the point. The tree houses and glamping tents offer low-key access to slow tourism, while the new cottages and villas are more traditional high-end hideaways. The result is a new type of resort built for the 21st century (from $795).
