Behind the gates of Detroit's exclusive boat clubs

A year ago, a friend and I were denied service at a local yacht club that shall remain nameless for merely mispronouncing the name of the member we'd accompanied (he was outside on his boat). It was my first brush with the exclusivity of a club where boats are kept, and it left me wondering what lived behind the gates of these places where I was not welcome. Turns out, metro Detroit's yacht and boat clubs keep themselves sealed from the public (sometimes with barbed-wire fencing) because everyone would hang out at them if they could. On a visit to five well-known area clubs, we found beautiful views, swimming pools, and frozen blended drinks. But each club was also a cultural microcosm, representative of the people who call themselves members. Join us for a written tour from the blue-collar Kean's Marina, all the way up the coast to the hoity-toity Grosse Pointe Yacht Club.

Detroit Yacht Club

The historic yacht club on Belle Isle is one of Detroit's crown jewels. Founded in 1868, it's one of the oldest clubs in the country, and much of that history has been preserved. The Mediterranean-style clubhouse is steeped in nautical themes, with gold-painted rope and anchor embellishments along the ceiling, the face of poseidon carved into the concrete above the main entrance, and sailboat figurines and paintings throughout. At 93,000 square feet, the clubhouse is believed to be the largest yacht clubhouse in the country. It allows space for a seemingly endless array of amenities that include a banquet hall, bar, restaurant, snack shack, tiki bar, indoor and outdoor swimming pool, squash court, fitness center, beach volleyball court, and concert stage. Hundreds of members have joined the DYC just to utilize those offerings; the club's general manager says two-thirds of its members don't own a boat. And though one might assume such a grand club would feel stuffy or uncomfortable, the DYC appears devoid of pretense. "We're in the heart of Detroit," explains general manager Rick Price. "[The members are] down-to-earth people, they're normal Joe Blows. There's nobody here that looks at me any differently whether they have $10 million in the bank or $100 in the bank."

Kean's Marina. - Violet Ikonomova

Kean's Marina

This "resort marina" has the tiki bar and playlist to make you feel as if you've been transported to Margaritaville. Beach music (think reggae hits like "Red Red Wine") plays throughout the marina, and people sip frozen cocktails garnished with mini umbrellas around a U-shaped pool.

Additional amenities include an indoor bar, jacuzzi, playground, and locker rooms. To hang out at Kean's, you must have a boat in one of its 400 wells or a storage rack. A convenience store and gas-up dock can be used by anyone boating on the river. Kean's is more affordable than a yacht club — it costs just $3,500 to put a 30-foot boat in the water and store it in the winter — and as a result, it's more laid-back and diverse. Co-owner Michael Litt says more than half of Kean's membership is black, and there's been a recent uptick in millennials who store their boats there.

Bayview Yacht Club. - Violet Ikonomova

Bayview Yacht Club

Bayview Yacht Club offers a home away from home for sailing aficionados in Detroit. It's not uncommon for members to set sail from the club several times each week. Commodore Ryan Farrell says he was up to four days a week until marriage force him to slow down his habit. On most weeknights, dozens of boat crews compete in races on the Detroit River as a sizeable crowd watches from a patio along the water's edge. Major races include a days-long regatta up Lake Huron all the way to Mackinac. Sailing and racing is really the focus here (the club counts an Olympian sailor among its members), so no pools or tennis courts, but there is a gorgeous bar-restaurant and lounge with plush leather seats. Much of the membership is from Grosse Pointe and St. Clair Shores, though the club is trying to diversify and expose more people to sailing. One of those efforts was underway the night I stopped by. Having not recognized me as a member, a regular asked if I was there as a "hitchhiker" — or, a person with no affiliation to the club who can join a boat crew once a week as part of a new program. "It's really not like the elitist sport most people make it out to be, I mean we're just Joe Schmoes around here," member Mike Dodge said as we stood at the water's edge. An air horn sounded, and a fleet of larger yachts came into view. He pointed out a 70-footer estimated to cost $300,000. "That boat typically has a lot more shrimp cocktail and lobster tail on it than some of the other boats," said member Kevin Rossell.

Edison Boat Club

"Egalitarian" is the word member Vince Pardi uses to describe this boat club for current and retired DTE Energy employees and their family members. "I love this club because you can have VP's and presidents and linemen and secretaries and nobody knows or cares," says Pardi. Situated on the grounds of a DTE natural gas plant, the club is more modest and homey than the others we visited. It has only 150 wells, and its primary features include a bar-restaurant, game room, and hangout area. On an overcast Friday evening, people of all backgrounds filled the windowed restaurant to take in the grey-blue view of the Detroit River. The atmosphere was cozy and friendly — no one inquired as to whether I was a member, and a guy who seemed to work at the facility popped up behind the bar and casually poured himself a shot of Jameson before disappearing again. The only unwelcoming aspect of Edison appears to be the barbed-wire fence that divides it from the McMansion community next door.

Grosse Pointe Yacht Club. - Violet Ikonomova

Grosse Pointe Yacht Club

This massive yacht club on Lake St. Clair is far and away the most grandiose of any club in metro Detroit. The Italian Renaissance-style clubhouse is distinguished by arched windows and a nearly 200-foot bell tower. Inside, an elaborate rotunda connects two dining rooms and a long foyer. There, a large bronze fountain statue called "Rhythm of the Waves" produces a light pattering sound that greets guests when they arrive. The 75,000-square-foot site features a bowling alley, Olympic-sized outdoor swimming pool, multiple tennis courts, and a sailing center. But it's the details that set Grosse Pointe Yacht Club apart. A harbor staff will do "virtually anything for these boating members," a membership marketing manager says, from delivering food to washing boats. A gourmet outdoor pizza oven can cook a pie in 90 seconds. The bathroom in the lobby has lotion and listerine . Grosse Pointe Yacht Club was once ranked the top yacht club in the country and currently sits in the top five. Membership, of course, does not come cheap. A social membership requires an initiation fee of approximately $3,500 and additional payments of about $500 a month. Boating members pay even more. On its website, the club professes to embody "the true spirit of excellence" but adds that "owning a yacht is not a measure of any of our members' worthiness. We value members that are authentic, sincere, and goal-oriented." Ninety percent of the club's members live in the Grosse Pointes.

In 1873, the area became one of the most ambitious harbor projects on the Great Lakes. Nearby, Pigeon sprang up as the Saginaw, Tuscola, Huron Railroad established a crossing south of Berne in 1886. Some railway maps list the two as separate stops.

About Michigan’s Thumb

Michigan Thumb Webcams

The Thumb is a region and a peninsula of Michigan, so named because the Lower Peninsula is shaped like a mitten. The Thumb area extends out into Lake Huron but enjoys miles of sandy beach coastline on Saginaw Bay. It’s considered the “closer up north” as it’s about a two-hour drive from Metro Detroit. The term “Upper Thumb” denotes Huron County at its tip. The Upper Thumb is a boaters paradise with sailing, fishing, and kayaking throughout the summer season. Using webcams, such as the Caseville webcam or the Port Austin webcam, is a great way to check out the weather and lack conditions.

If you’re interested in knowing more about some of these locations, we have some excellent overviews and highlights. Check out Six Fascinating Places to See in Harbor Beach . The largest freshwater harbor in the United States.

A series of Bart Art projects is at the tip of the Thumb near Port Austin. You really must see the Home of Emergency Ark where an 1800s barn has been transformed into an ark on the land.

The Thumb region has its share of history. During the lumbering era, shipbuilding took place up and down Saginaw Bay. One of the biggest was Sebewaing Harbor. Our post on Sebewaing History – A Busy Harbor takes you back to when sailing ships dominated the Great Lakes.

Lastly, we tell the story of one Upper Thumb town that refused to die. Huron City was burned down to the ground twice! Once in 1871 and again in 1881. It was rebuilt both times. It has an exciting story, and many buildings can be visited today in this living museum. See The Faded Glory of Huron City

Thank you for covering the Flint water crisis in such detail. I had no idea how serious things really were, I found all the information I wanted to know right here. You would think, living in the “Water, Winter Wonderland”, that we would be the last state to have a water problem. How sad. I will be looking to see if there is anything I can do to help with my limited income.

History Devils Lake Yacht Club Devils Lake Yacht Club has a rich history and is located in Manitou Beach, Michigan.  Our facility was originally built in the 1870’s as the Pleasant Grove Hotel.  The Victorian era clubhouse is a historic landmark at Devils Lake.  In September of  Devils Lake and Round Lake were first inhabited by Native Americans many years ago.  Chief Metwa and his tribe came here to camp during the summer months.  The wigwams of the tribe were located on the north and east side of Round Lake, with the council grounds established at the head of Devils Lake.  The Native Americans, so legend has it, gave the lake its name.  One day a Native American princess, an excellent swimmer, went swimming in Devils Lake near the north end council grounds.  She disappeared and was never seen again.  The Native Americans decided that the lake was the home of a devil who had claimed the life of the princess.  So it became Devils Lake, the Native American name was "Michenmanitou."  For many years a rocky area on the east shore of the lake was known as the Devil's Chair.  Just off the Echo Cove beach was a bottomless hole known as the Devil's Hole and it was thought to be inhabited by a monster which went down this hole, through a tunnel under the ground to Binn's Lake.  This monster was said to have a well-traveled path to Sand Lake and Wamplers Lake.  In April of 1833, the Honorable Orson Green and Joseph Beal's family camped on the shores of Devils Lake and slept under the "blue vault of heaven" on the land he settled which still belongs to his family. According to Mr. Green, "at that time there were no inhabitants, save the Native American, in all this country, from the Chicago Road to and into the states of Ohio and Indiana."

Several other exploring parties visited this region in April and May and all of them entered their land in the township of Rollin as well. The area's first hotel called Allen's Landing, was built by John B. Allen in the 1870's, now known as the Devils Lake Yacht Club.  Mr. Allen also built the North End hotel.  This started an era of popularity which has never ceased.  At the turn of the century the elaborate Birdsall's Hotel which was built later became the Lakeview Hotel and Dance Hall and finally Tibbs IGA.  With the coming of the Cincinnati Northern R.R. and a branch of the New York Central, thousands of visitors came to Devils Lake and made it a very popular spot. The railroad even offered special rates.  Early rumor has it that Mr. Birdsall spent $50,000 developing this hotel and summer playground.  Two steamboats sailed the lake, having one as a double-decker with a sidewheel.  At the cost of one quarter, you could have a nice cool ride around the lake.  A channel had to be dredged at Cherry Point where the sand bar crossed the lake so that these boats could carry passengers and mail.  Before that time when the horse drawn threshing machines needed to go from one side of the lake to the other and crossed on the sand bar.   With the arrival of the automobile, the lake area began to develop as an all-summer, everyday playground.  As lakeshore property sold for cottages, the summer homes became thicker and thicker. The Beals, the Greens and other early settlers would not now recognize the lake they discovered in 1833.  Allen's Landing was purchased by E. C. DeMerritt and rooms were rented out.  For years Mrs. DeMerritt cooked famous chicken dinners and was said to have been an excellent cook.  Many activities took place on the hotel grounds and the biggest one during the summer was the Annual Farmers Picnic.  Folks from Hillsdale and Lenawee counties came to the lake for a holiday the last Thursday in August.  They came by train, horse and buggy, farm wagons and later by automobile. Concession stands lined the walk from the hotel to the area where the Manitou Inn now stands.

Pleasant Grove Hotel History The earliest mention of development at Pleasant Grove came in 1880, when a new hotel was set to be built.  The hotel, it was announced, would be 36x80, 24 feet tall, built upon a high patch of ground west of the tree grove at the steamer launch landing.  The two-story hotel opened in June 1881 and was declared to be a fine addition to the tourism industry.  In 1888, it was determined that a third story of rooms would benefit the business, as it was in direct competition with the larger Lake View Hotel and Lake Rest Resort.  An expanded porch and verandah were built around the north and east sides of the hotel in 1909, which continued to operate until the late 1930s.  The old hotel came into the possession of the Devils Lake Yacht Club in 1945 where it was modernized in places to suit the needs of the organization.  The former hotel is the only surviving building from Devils Lake's early modern history.

SPEAK TO A SALES PROFESSIONAL

Michigan is one of the country’s top four-season travel destinations, offering visitors many year-round events—winter events, heritage and cultural events, fairs and festivals, and of course, with 3,300 miles of freshwater shoreline, Michigan is America’s heart of classic boating. Located in the Great Lakes region of upper Midwestern United States, Michigan is the only state comprised of two peninsulas, Upper and Lower (shaped like a mitten) that are separated by the Straits of Mackinac connecting Lake Huron and Lake Michigan. Michigan is bordered by 4 of the 5 Great Lakes along with Lake St Clair and has 36,000 miles of streams and over 11,000 inland lakes and ponds ranking Michigan as the second “most-water” state, after Alaska. Opened in 1957, Mackinac Bridge dubbed “Mighty Mac,” spans the Straits of Mackinac and at 5 miles long, is the longest bridge in the western hemisphere.

Historic Mackinac Island in Lake Huron between the Upper and Lower Peninsulas is within view of the Mackinac Bridge, but ironically does not permit vehicle traffic on the island, an ordinance since 1898. One must arrive by boat or plane (there is a small runway for private or charter aircraft). Mackinac Island was a hub for the fur trade in the 1820s and then for fishing. Mackinac Island State Park covers about 82% of the island with trails, woods, the 144ft limestone Arch Rock Formation, and other geological wonders. Tourism began in the 1850s and the magnificent Grand Hotel was opened in 1887.

The Grand Hotel features the longest porch in the world and is the world’s largest summer hotel. It has been declared a National Historic Landmark. The Grand Hotel, under different ownerships, has expanded and upgraded over the 130 years of operation and now includes an 18-hole golf course, Grand Hotel Shops, 14 restaurants and bars, and much more. Many of the beautiful large Victorian “cottages” that dot the south/southwestern shoreline date to the 19th century and have been converted to inns and bed & breakfasts. The 8-mile roadway that encircles the village is traversed by horse-drawn carriages, bicycles and by foot. Main Street Mackinac is a charming center of specialty shops, Artists Market, gift shops, boutiques, museum, kayak tours, restaurants, a putting green, and 15 fudge shops!

First explored by the French in the 17th century and claimed as part of New France Colony, a fur-trading empire, it came under British rule after defeat in the French & Indian War in 1762. After the American Revolutionary War, the British ceded the territory to the United States, and it became part of the Northwest Territory until 1800. Michigan Territory was formed in 1805 but was only admitted to the Union as the 26th state in 1837. Michigan became the center of the US Automotive Industry in the early 20th century as the 3 major automobile companies—General Motors, Ford Motor Company, and Chrysler Group, were all headquartered in Detroit located on the Lower Peninsula. With the collective engineering ingenuity of Henry Ford (who developed the revolutionary moving assembly line for mass production of automobiles), Ransom E. Olds, John and Horace Dodge, Henry Leland, David Dunbar Buick, Henry Joy, and Charles King concentrated in the Detroit area, Michigan’s economy was transformed by automotive manufacturing as well as the socioeconomic life of the US and much of the world, on a vastly greater level than by public transport like railroads and steamships.

The availability of jobs drew multitudes of immigrants and migrants to the Detroit area contributing to its cultural diversity and population growth. Michigan became the manufacturing leader of America in the early decades of the 20th century, but the state was hit hard by the Great Depression years. Although WWII brought back the automotive and copper mining industries, manufacturing suffered again when production moved overseas during the latter 20th century. A shift to tourism and new industries has helped revitalize the state’s economy in the 21st century. Today the sparsely populated Upper Peninsula with its farms, trails, and other natural attractions, is a popular tourist destination. The Lower Peninsula continues as a center of manufacturing, forestry, services, high-tech industry, in addition to agriculture.

Several of Michigan’s attractions are found nowhere else in the world—Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is the world's largest group of freshwater sand dunes on a 35-mile stretch of coastline on the Lower Peninsula that includes the uninhabited North and South Manitou Islands. Sand dunes soar 400ft above sea level and are climbable. Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary near Alpena, is an underwater preserve that protects a collection of about 100 historic shipwrecks in Lake Huron—great attraction for scuba divers. Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore on the Upper Peninsula features awe-inspiring multicolored cliffs. Detroit is the birthplace of Motown Records. “Hitsville USA” is the nickname given to Motown’s first recording studio—Studio A, in a house purchased by Berry Gordy in 1959. The Motown Sound of Detroit in the early 1960s has become a definitive part of American Culture. And the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation in Dearborn is a complex of historical and cultural attractions for experiencing the perseverance, ingenuity, and resourcefulness of the American people for over 300 years.

Michigan is known for its farms, orchards, and cider mills that produce a vast array of agricultural products along with farm festivals and entertainment. Michigan produces apples, cherries, pumpkins, Christmas trees, lavender, tulips, corn, seasonal local produce for farm-to-table cuisine, and more. Pies, doughnuts, jams, bread, cheeses, and much more can be enjoyed farm fresh at farm shops and Farmers Markets. U-Pick orchards, hayrides, animals, cornfield mazes are among the many attractions during the fall harvest season. The northern lake area of the two peninsulas is the ideal climate for growing grapes. 35 wineries are on the Old Mission and Leelanau peninsula trails. The area contributes more than half the state’s wine grape production. Larry Bell brewed his first batch of beer in the 1980s and today, Bell’s Brewery in Comstock and Kalamazoo ranks as one of the nation’s largest craft breweries. Sideyard Ale is made from Michigan-grown hops. Bell’s is on the “Give a Craft Beer Trail” along with 11 other local breweries.

Michigan is renowned for its cross-country skiing (skate and classic styles), snowboarding, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, sledding, downhill skiing, and even biking with special fat-tire snow bikes! MyWinterTrails.org features a collection of resorts and attractions such as Huron Meadows Metropark/Huron-Clinton Metroparks that offer a combined 24 miles of trails for both styles of cross-country skiing. Other members of the organization are Boyne Highlands, Boyne Mountain, Cross Country Ski Headquarters, Crystal Mountain, Forbush Corner, Gaylord Area Convention & Tourism (offers all types of winter recreation), Hanson Hills Recreation Area, Shanty Creek Resorts, Treetops Resort, Traverse City Area Tourism, Nubs Nob in Harbor Springs, and Iron Fish Distillery—a “Field-to-Glass” craft distillery just outside of Thompsonville near the Betsie River known for steelhead trout. There are many more trails and resorts for winter sports, especially cross-country skiing, which is a huge tourist and local winter activity.

With 3,300 miles of freshwater shoreline, Michigan is the nation’s heart of classic boating. In the Lower Peninsula, one is only 6 miles or less from the closest recreational water. Michigan also has a history of boatbuilding which boomed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, though its focus was on developing speedy runabouts that were preferred by Prohibition-era rumrunners and later as landing craft during WWII. As with Henry Ford’s production methods for mass-producing Model Ts, mid-20th century entrepreneurs brought boat ownership within reach of most American consumers.

Several notable boating spots in Michigan are Lake Huron’s Les Cheveraux Islands, a chain of 36 islands and navigable channels. The area hosts an annual antique wooden boat show in August. Torch Lake (Alden) is considered one the most beautiful lakes in the world with its crystal clear multi-hued blue water. Lake St Clair (Detroit) connects Lake Erie to Lake Huron and is both a major shipping channel and pleasure boat lake. Michigan has 150,000 pleasure boats registered in the vicinity of Lake St Clair. The lake was named #1 bass fishing lake in the world by Bassmasters in 2013. Spring Lake & Lake Michigan (Grand Haven), named “Coast Guard City USA,” hosts the annual Grand Haven Coast Guard Festival. The area also hosts an annual Wooden & Classic Boat Show. Big Manistique Lake (Curtis) is the largest group of lakes at 20,000 acres and links to hundreds of miles of rivers and streams for great boating and fishing (muskie, perch, whitefish) and the annual Walleye Jamboree. Lake Charlevoix (Charlevoix & Boyne City) is a beautiful, clear lake surrounded by green hillside and is considered the second most beautiful lake in America, after Lake Tahoe. Some of Michigan’s most iconic beach towns are on the lake, with great eateries, shops, art galleries, marinas, and outfitters. The Boyne Thunder Annual Poker Run is a 150-mile course that traverses Lake Charlevoix and Lake Michigan, showcasing high-performance racing boats such as Scarab, Apache, and Fountain.

Grand Lake (Alpena) has 40ft rock ledges that contain unusual fossils on its western shore. Presque Isle Harbor Wooden Boat Show is held annually in June and is one of the best displays of beautiful historic wooden pleasure boats of yesteryear and new versions. Mullett Lake (Topinabee) is in the central point of the Inland Waterway which is a series of connected lakes and rivers allowing boaters to cross one side of the state to the other by water. Aloha State Park near the Straits of Mackinac is a popular destination located 5 miles south of Cheboygan. Campsites are near the park’s boat launch and registered campers can dock their boats in the protected boat basin. Marinas around the lake provide fuel and snacks. Lake Leelanau (Leland) is in two sections connected by the Narrows between North and South Lake Leelanau for a combined 9,000 acres. The Lake Michigan harbor at Leland features historical Fishtown, designated a Michigan State Historical Site in 1973 and listed with NRHP in 1975. Comprised of weathered fish shanties, smokehouses, fish tugs, and docks that are a vital part of Michigan’s fishing heritage, Fishtown is one of the last remaining fisheries on the Great Lakes. Gull Lake (Battle Creek) is a deep, clear lake enjoyed by boaters and scuba divers looking for artifacts (phone booth, swing set, motorcycle, 2 boats, railroad tracks) placed in the lake to pique the interest of divers.  A yacht club holds sailboat races on weekends.

US Coast Guard Approved, Type III. Brands like Extrasport and Gill are the most popular and comfortable. Fit is important, so please choose the appropriate size for THIS summer.

Every sailor must have their own tube. The more protection the better. Ideally choose a waterproof variety that won’t hurt the eyes.

Even better sun protection.

Sun Glasses   †

Important protection for the only eyes you have!

"Every sailor brings a bailer" which can easily be fashioned by cutting the bottom off of a big OJ or laundry soap jug.

Waterproof Watch  †

Besides wearing clothes to get wet in, every sailor should have extra dry duds and a towel.

Five star review by salina s:.

Very friendly and clean inside service was awesome. The owner even came around and said hello to everybody you don't see that every day so that was cool. The nachos were delicious. He got a lot of them. You could share with at least four people and they're having a Super Bowl party. The Flyers is in my picture pretty awesome. Looks like it would be fun.
