The ‘Sugar and Spice’ is a Hughes 40, ketch rigged sailboat built in 1978 . She was built in Ontario, Canada. Designed by Sparkman and Stephens. She has a full keel 9000lbs lead which only draws 47. Her centre cockpit provides spacious accommodations and storage below decks. This is a blue water boat mente to sail around the world The boat was on the dry in 1019 and got the full treatment of repairs to failed faring between the hull keel, 2 heavy coats of multi season bottom paint, new zincs and a new used prop. The hull free board was just painted but will need touch up and the top side has 1.1/2 coats of topside paint. This boat is complete but is a project boat that buttoned up could be worth $60 to $80k when finished. The Lehmann 80 hp engine provides ample propulsion and for motoring sails down and is a dependable diesel that will be good for years to come. Hours are unknown but a guess is less than 1000 hours. The sails, serviceable but could need replacing . This boat sails best in 15 to 25 mph wind and is a blast to sail. She is very forgiving keeping in mind 29000lbs of inertia. I started performing the interior repairs and had to stop due to bad knees and cold weather. I’m asking $8000 or best offer. Priced to sell ** make me an offer *** please! no low balling. The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more. Classic hull speed formula: Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL Sail Area / Displacement RatioA measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more. SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3 - SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
- D : Displacement in pounds.
Ballast / Displacement RatioA measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize. Ballast / Displacement * 100 Displacement / Length RatioA measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more. D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³ - D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
- LWL: Waterline length in feet
Comfort RatioThis ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more. Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 ) - D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
- LOA: Length overall in feet
- Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
Capsize Screening FormulaThis formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more. CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64) Westerbeke diesel offered as an option. A pilot house version was also offered. This listing is presented by SailboatListings.com . Looked at a 1981 Hughes 31' This WeekendSpent saturday morning looking at a 1981 Sparkman and Stephens designed 31' Hughes. This was the first sailboat I've looked at to purchase so I have nothing really to compare it with (purchase-wise). Minor water damage in the cabin due to a chainplate leaking, forward hatch leaks as well. It has a Diesel and not the gas saildrive. The boat has been on the hard for 2 years and I don't think the Diesel has been fired up since. The owner lives out of state and the broker didn't want to bother the yard to see if it would fire up. No batteries installed in the boat, so I couldnt check any of the existing lights/electronics for operation. I say electronics, but it really had none installed. A VHF radio and thats about it. Rigging and the sails were in good shape. The one thing that did catch my eye was the narrow cockpit and how far aft the helm is. Either sitting or standing behind the wheel my head hits the backstay. Being on other boats in the 28' to 33' never seemed to be a problem that I noticed. Is this just the way this boat is designed? Would like be annoying underway? It was in the yard! Any opinions or thoughts on this Hughes would be greatly appreciated. Thanx, Ima Hey Ima - for me, I'd say if something bugged you on the first hour aboard (the helm/backstay issue) - that's a real sign. Just remember that it will never get better. Maybe you can learn to live with it - but I'd listen to my gut. I'd be listenng to my gut on more than one issue........is the leak fixed? not that the backstay hitting your head is an issue, but it will not go away. Now if you are sitting off to the side most of the time, not an issue. This does not sound like the boat for you. You seem to have found too many faults with this one. Now the same brand with "ONLY" lets say the back stay issue, no leakage issues. one that is sailing, motor works etc, The only thing you can find wrong is the color of the boot stripes........boot stripes are easy to change out from red to blue or black or pink with purple polka dots! Marty In today's market you can do better than that boat. I'm betting the price is attractive.... as you can see, for a reason. I think construction is fairly robust from what I've heard, but I think they missed the boat on the cabin design, and the extreme pinched ends will always create challenges for the cockpit area. You also have to like the fairly severe tumblehone hull shape (some do, some don't) I'd keep looking for now. w/ SmackDaddy on this one. We looked at a Sabre 28 where both the traveler and backstay would hit your head when either sitting or standing at the helm. Other than that , the rest of the boat was immaculate. Walked away because that one problem would always be there. Thank all.. Thank you for all your thoughts, I'm still undecided - The Seller is basically throwing it at me. This would be my first boat and maybe I'm just being too cautious.. I'm looking at a Coronado 35 this weekend, and from the looks of it it on here, that isn't a popular boat either. I figure it doesn't hurt to look and at least I have the experience to put towards looking in the future. Thanx, Ima Just split the backstay 10' up. No big deal. Was your wife perfect when you met her or did you kinda grow on each other? Haha. But.. Attach the ends of that split backstay... where? If you are thinking "just glass in some new chainplates on the aft corners.", ask yourself, why? Why be doing structural glass work on something you /just/ bought? Its a buyers market out there for old, ~30ft used boats. Often even the yard fees for a few years cost more than the price people can get for those boats. In a lot of cases, buyers will give them away. The trick will be finding them, since many have given up spending any money on ads for a boat they'll get a couple grand for. You spend most of your time in that cockpit you don't sound particularly fond of. If this was a particular model you really wanted, and didn't immediately offend you by whacking you on the head while you sat at the helm, it might be a different story. Regarding leaking chainplates, thats a place to look for softening of the deck and corrosion of the plate itself, or the bulkhead/knee/whatever its mounted to. 6+ year old thread! I suspect the OP has made his decision about this boat. Well it took me longer than that! And the second boat I looked at is still available. Top Contributors this Month |

Hughes 40 - Cored Hull ? I'm researching the Hughes 40, an oldish Sparkman & Stephens design that was built in Canada starting in the early 70s. Other than the tumultuous history of the Hughes company and generally well-appreciated construction practices, I can't find much information on the boat itself.
The Hughes 40 is a stable and sturdy cruiser, built for long-distance voyages. However, other sailboats in its class also have unique characteristics that make them suitable for specific sailing conditions. Let's compare it with a couple of other similarly sized sailboats. 1. Hughes 40 vs. Catalina 400.
I have a '76 Northstar 40 Hull #42 that was nicely converted from ketch to sloop and would definitely call her a blue water boat. And she is a joy to sail. S&S design is excellent but maintenance and outfitting are part of being a blue-water boat as well. She stays upright even in heavy winds and the center cockpit is both convenient and feels very safe. I just hauled here and painted hull and ...

It is reasonably stable / stiff and has an excellent righting capability if capsized. It is best suited as a heavy bluewater cruising boat.
The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Hughes 40 is about 255 kg/cm, alternatively 1432 lbs/inch.
