The bay is connected to the Bristol Channel by the Cardiff Bay Barrage, a large embankment that was constructed in the 1990s as part of a major regeneration project. The bay is approximately 2.5 square kilometers (1 square mile) in size and has a maximum depth of around 10 meters (33 feet).

Cardiff Yacht Club is a thriving yacht club that was originally founded in Cardiff in 1900. Today, the club is centrally located on the edge of Cardiff Bay, overlooking the Wetlands Nature Reserve, with panoramic views over the Bay and the Bristol Channel beyond. We have about 300 yachts and motorboats permanently moored on either our trot moorings or pontoons in the freshwater bay.

Cardiff Bay Yacht Club is situated on the River Ely peninsula. Its facilities are available to members and visitors. Visitors can call in advance to arrange their stay or call on CH37 on arrival during normal office hours. Visitors are welcome to moor on the wavebreak pontoon, which is the Eastern most leg of the club marina.
