One week in the Ionian Sea

We new to chartering yachts. We had a good experience with AF Yachting. The team are friendly and helpful. Our boat had no technical issues despite being 8 years old and despite the boat being superficially a bit tired in places, we had a great time and we’re pleased to recommend them.

We booked one week in the Saronic…

We booked one week in the Saronic Islands on a Lagoon 380 catamaran. The anchor failed to work the second day. Our skipper Nikos Anastasiou spent a full day on th ephone with AFY and engineers and managed to bring a repair person by 11pm on Sunday night! The problem has been fixed by 1am and Nikos spent all this time helping the mechanic. Next morning we were sailing again! Without Nikos help our dream time would have finished after one day. Thank you Nikos and AFY. Nikos proved to be a perfect skipper and companion over our week on the sea. He is very professional, patient, skilled, organized and funny. We already decided to book another trip with AFY in the Ionic with Nikos as skipper. See you all next year! From Canada, Michael & Lia Cheptea

Organization a chaos - boats in very bad shape

Contractual issues were followed. Organization was amess….contract could not be found and although booked well in advance they had no clue which boat we will have. Large chaos in the port in Paros...further. we had a very bad boat (ANASSA Bavaria 56). The Genua was not retractable and there was no support by the base. In addition, the engine was broken and the anchor motor was broken...we stayed 3 days in the port for repair….they did not want to pay any money back....I highly recommend NOT to book with them.

Attention!!! Scam!!!

We have payed full price of the boat. Immidiately after the second (final) payment AF yachting had dissapeared. No answers by mail, neither by phone!!! Be aware of this scam company!!!

Boats are good for the price, service is average - had waste tank switch broken and they did take all my reduced deposit 400 EUR for quite basic operations. Boat Konstantinos 14 was okay but not in perfect condition.

AVOID THIS DANGEROUS COMPANY

We (5 people) have rented a Catamaran to AF Yatching for 1 week, this August 2022, and we are shocked about our nigthmare experience, due to the drunk skipper they selected for us. AF Yatching has absolutly no process and control on the Skipper they will select to drive your boat, and will not help you if you have problems with him, even if you are in danger. After 2 days cruising we called AF Yatching, to let them know about their SKIPPER WHO WAS DRUNK and has absolutely no respect for us, put our lives in danger and was looking to fight with us. AF Yatching didn't do ANYTHING to help us, as they had already paied the full salary of their skipper, as they said. We were SCARED OF THEIR SKIPPER, and 3 days after our first call, the Skipper AF Yatching selected for our boat, was drunk again, was braeaking glasses on the floor, and was basically VERY DANGEROUS. We called AF Yatching again to have help from them... there only answer was "Do you have evidence". We then asked their skipper to drop us at the port. He refused and told us to JUMP IN THE WATER WITH OUR SUITCASES and swim to the port, which was 800 meters from the boat. We had to call other boats to help us, and we finally finished our boat trips 2 days in advance. We have reported this case to the Greek police. After all, we asked AF Yatching to reimburse us. They refused, and charged us for the gas their skipper, used to come back alone (as we left the boat) to Athenes.... 0 morality. They then quotes their drunk skipper, saying that we were the people who were unrespecfull and drunk . AF Yatching has 0 respect for their clients, 0 morality, and ll not do anything to help you, even you are in danger, as long as they are making money. AVOID THIS COMPANY AT ALL COST.

Ohio Air Force vet, brother sentenced to 4 months in 'notorious' Dubai prison after yacht drinking incident

T wo Ohio brothers, one an Air Force veteran, were sentenced to spend four months in a Dubai prison after an incident involving drinking on a yacht in June, a crime in the United Arab Emirates.

Radha Stirling, CEO of human rights organization Detained in Dubai and an advocate for Joseph and Joshua Lopez, alleges the brothers were drugged and robbed on the same night as the drinking that landed them in jail, and they are calling on U.S. lawmakers, including Republican Ohio Sen. JD Vance , for help. The drugging allegations have yet to be officially confirmed.

"Sen. Vance’s office has been in constant communication with the State Department, the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates in the United States and the constituents’ family," Vance spokesperson Parker Magid told Fox News Digital. "Sen. Vance is monitoring the as-yet-unresolved legal proceedings carefully."

Stirling said the Lopez brothers are appealing their sentence, alleging they were "targeted by scammers while on vacation in Dubai."

"While local criminals target tourists with what appears to be the support of law enforcement, Dubai is far from the ‘safe tourist destination’ it’s marketed as," Stirling said.

The State Department told Fox News Digital in a statement it is aware of the Lopez brothers' recent arrests.

"We take our role in assisting U.S. citizens abroad seriously and are monitoring the situation," a spokesperson said. Neither the UAE Embassy nor the UAE tourist police responded to inquiries from Fox News Digital.

The State Department has a Level 2 travel advisory listed for the UAE due to threats of terrorism. The State Department's website for the UAE notes that alcohol is "very limited" in certain private areas, and "[p]ublic drunkenness and driving under the influence, regardless of one’s blood alcohol content level, are considered very serious offenses."

"Persons arrested on alcohol-related offenses are regularly detained for many days as they await a court hearing. Penalties may include hefty jail sentences, substantial fines and, for Muslims (even those holding U.S. citizenship), lashings," the website states.

The State Department also notes the country's "strict" laws on drugs, public decency, photography, social media usage and LGBTQ-related activities or preferences.

Stirling said if the brothers' appeal is unsuccessful, Joseph, a veteran and 24-year-old father, and Joshua "face months in Dubai jails notorious for human rights abuses."

"Visitors are flocking into Dubai and facing the most ridiculous charges for alleged crimes they haven’t even committed. Last year, we saw Tierra Allen targeted by a rental car company, Elizabeth de las Santos targeted by an immigration officer and Peter Clark detained for residual hashish found in his blood that he’d legally smoked in Las Vegas weeks before flying," Stirling said.

She is pressing the United States to "increase travel warnings" for Americans going to Dubai.

"Not only will they be robbed and extorted, but they’ll usually end up in prison too," she said.

UK tycoon's daughter is seventh, final victim of Sicily yacht sinking

Divers searching a sunken superyacht off Sicily recovered the body of the teenage daughter of UK tech tycoon Mike Lynch Friday, the seventh and final victim of a tragedy in which the businessman also perished.

Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah had been among six passengers reported missing after the "Bayesian" went down off the north coast of the Italian island in a storm early on Monday morning.

After Hannah's body was brought ashore on Friday, her family issued a statement describing their "unspeakable grief".

"The Lynch family is devastated, in shock and is being comforted and supported by family and friends," it said.

Search teams had recovered the bodies of four of Lynch's friends on Wednesday, and that of the entrepreneur himself on Thursday.

The body of a man believed to be the yacht's chef had been found a few hours after the sailing ship sank.

Lynch, 59, had invited friends and family onto the sailing boat to celebrate his recent acquittal in a massive US fraud case. 

But the 56-metre (185-foot) British-flagged yacht was struck by a waterspout -- akin to a mini-tornado -- before dawn on Monday as it was anchored off Porticello, near Palermo.

It sank at around 04:30 am local time, according to management company Camper and Nicolsons, and now lies on the sea bed some 50 metres down.

- 'Heartbroken' -

Hannah had just finished her end-of-school exams and had a place to study English literature at Oxford University.

Friends described her as warm, loving and "charming and ferociously intelligent", according to one of the tributes issued by the family.

Lynch, once dubbed the British "Bill Gates", was "the most brilliant mind and (most) caring person I have ever known", said another.

The businessman had been acquitted on all charges in a San Francisco court in June after he was accused of an $11 billion fraud linked to the sale of his software firm Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard.

US lawyer Chris Morvillo, a partner at top law firm Clifford Chance who worked on the trial, also died in the sinking, along with his wife Neda.

Morvillo's firm Clifford Chance paid tribute to the couple, saying all were "heartbroken at the tragic passing... and still coming to terms with this terrible loss".

Italy's fire service said 27 divers had gone down to the submerged yacht each day, performing 123 dives overall in a search that also saw helicopters scour the area.

The bodies of Jonathan Bloomer, the chair of Morgan Stanley International, and his wife Judy, were also found.

The Bloomer family said they were suffering "unimaginable grief" for a couple who had been together for five decades.

"Our only comfort is that they are still together now," the family said.

- 'Uncovering the truth' -

Many questions remain about why the yacht sank, and so quickly, when other boats nearby were unaffected.

Italian prosecutors have opened a probe and will hold a press conference on Saturday.

On Thursday the head of the company which built the boat said the tragedy could have been avoided.

But Nautilus International, a maritime trade union, called for a "thorough, unbiased investigation".

General secretary Mark Dickinson warned questioning the crew's conduct "without the full facts" would be "not only unfair but also harmful to the process of uncovering the truth".

The Bayesian, owned by Lynch's family, boasted a 75-metre mast, the tallest aluminium sailing mast in the world, according to the Charter World website.

Raising the wreck would likely cost some 15 million euros and take "six to eight weeks", according to the salvage engineer who led the operation to recover the Costa Concordia cruise ship, which sank off Italy in 2012.

To recover the yacht, the mast could be removed on the seabed but the boat would be lifted up whole using a giant crane and a team of 40 specialist divers, South African engineer Nick Sloane told the Repubblica daily.

Endnu et lig er bragt ud af forlist yacht ved Sicilien

I alt er seks personer bekræftet døde, efter en yacht sank under et uvejr mandag. En person savnes fortsat.

Italienske redningsdykkere har torsdag hentet endnu et lig ud af en yacht ved Sicilien, efter at skibet forliste under et uvejr mandag.

Onsdag blev fire lig bjærget fra skibsvraget. De blev transporteret til hospitaler i nærheden i byen Palermo, og er endnu ikke blevet officielt identificeret.

Ifølge en kilde tæt på redningsoperationen er det liget af den britiske tech-forretningsmand Mike Lynch, der er blevet bragt ud af vraget torsdag. Forretningsmandens 18-årige datter, Hannah, er stadig savnet ifølge kilden.

Kokken på skibet, Recaldo Thomas, blev fundet død, kort efter at fartøjet sank. Herefter har seks personer været savnet. Fem af dem er nu fundet døde.

Der var 22 personer om bord på skibet, da det blev fanget i et voldsomt uvejr, mens det lå for anker ud for Siciliens kyst. 15 personer, herunder Mike Lynchs kone, formåede at flygte og blev reddet op af vandet i live.

Skibsvraget ligger knap 50 meter under havets overflade. Dybden har været med til at vanskeliggøre dykkernes arbejde, og det har været svært at komme ind i båden, har det italienske brandvæsen oplyst.

Ulykken har forbløffet marineeksperter, som mener, at et skib af den slags burde have været i stand til at modstå sådan et vejr.

Anklagere i byen Termini Imerese sydøst for Palermo har åbnet en efterforskning og myndigheder er gået i gang med at stille spørgsmål til passagerer og vidner.

Kaptajnen eller besætningen har ikke kommenteret på ulykken.

Ud over Mike Lynch og hans datter, Hannah, savnes blandt andre Jonathan Bloomer, som er bestyrelsesformand i det amerikanske finansinstitut Morgan Stanley International, og hans hustru, Judy Bloomer.

Også advokat Christopher Morvillo og hans hustru, Neda Morvillo, savnes.

59-årige Mike Lynch har blandt andet været i fokus på grund af salget af Autonomy til det amerikanske selskab HP i 2011 for 11 milliarder dollar.

Herefter fulgte en årelang retssag, hvor HP beskyldte Lynch for bedrageri i forbindelse med salget.

Først i juni i år blev Mike Lynch renset for anklagerne.
