They say it’s what’s on the inside that counts, and that’s certainly true of Phathom Studio ’s latest superyacht concept .

The fledgling Dutch design firm, which was recently established by marine-world heavyweights Jacob van de Haar, Fabian Henke, Raquel H. Grijota and Sean Bekeschus, has just unveiled a new 197-footer that features a glitzy glass-clad interior akin to that of a New York penthouse.

The striking vessel follows in the footsteps of the studio’s first concept Phathom-1, which the company revealed back in 2019. Like its 262-foot predecessor, the newcomer eschews the traditional layout of a superyacht in favor of elegant open-plan spaces and loft-like proportions. It was designed for a client who wanted to squeeze all the luxe amenities of Phathom-1 into a smaller, more nimble yacht.

At the heart of the new superyacht is a three-level indoor-outdoor atrium that spans from the main deck aft up to the sundeck. Its structural glass exterior, which is replete with geometric shapes and lines, not only makes a striking visual statement, but also allows plenty of natural light to stream in.

In a similar fashion, the split-level owner’s suite comprises large glass windows and a glass balcony that separates the bedroom from the dedicated lounge and study below.

Another highlight is the conservatory on the sundeck. Once again wrapped in glass, it comes fitted with an alfresco dining area, gym and spa that all offer panoramic views, of course. The glass floor, meanwhile, acts as a skylight for the central atrium below.

The aft deck sports a huge infinity pool.  Phathom Design

Elsewhere, the bow lounge, which is equipped with glass panels to protect seafarers from the elements, sports curved sofas ripe for taking in sunsets and a waterfall feature for added pizzaz. At the opposite end, the aft deck is crowned by a huge infinity pool with accompanying sun lounges. It’s also fitted with fold-out bulwarks for added space.

The vessel can store two tenders and features a large crane under the deck on the starboard side to help with launching.

Phathom didn’t share any details regarding propulsion, but, hey, who needs speed when you have style.

Start out with the big picture – what is this cruise line known for?

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection is new to the cruising scene . Its first superyacht,  Evrima , launched in 2022, and  Ilma  is the second in its quickly expanding fleet. The collection is meant to provide all the luxury and freedom of a private yacht with the refinement and service Ritz-Carlton is known for. And I have to say they’re nailing it – I truly felt like I was aboard a yacht more than a cruise ship. All of the spaces are designed with intimacy in mind, and you can tell.

Tell us about the ship in general .

She’s sleek, sexy, and has a hotelier’s touch. I stayed at Hôtel Arts Barcelona, a Ritz-Carlton flagship before Ilma departed, and being onboard felt like a natural extension of the hotel. Everything felt comfortable, but not at the expense of style. My mind immediately goes to the director-style dining chairs on deck outside Mistral, the restaurant on deck 10, which were not only designed specifically for Ilma – sleek chrome for the base and classic nautical stripes for the cushions – but improved upon from Evrima for new dimensions catering to comfort. I also can’t rave enough about the linens throughout the ship, from the napkins to the sheets to the bathrobe (more on this later).

All of the decks on board are expansive but never feel overcrowded – the loungers, couches and tables are arranged to create pockets of intimate spaces, so you never feel like there are 400 other passengers onboard. There are 10 decks total, the upper deck (10) and lower decks (3-5) being the most social – the main pool deck is on top, with loungers spanning along both sides of the ship and smaller tables between. At the bow, there’s the observation deck, cleverly hidden on the far side of the swimming pool , with couches and its own bar. It’s so private that you almost feel like you might be in the wrong place (replaced quickly by the feeling that this is now your little secret). The lower decks house most of the restaurants, the fitness studio and spa, and the smaller (infinity) pool deck, as well as the Living Room, which has smaller groupings of couches and tables, separated by natural parts of the architecture, like pillars and bookshelves, so you feel like you’re in, well, someone’s well-appointed family room.

Every design decision feels purposeful because, of course, it is. Taking what they learned from Evrima and her guests, the Yacht Collection expanded much of Ilma ’s capacity to respond to what passengers gravitated toward the most, doubling the size of the fitness studios, the number of spa treatment rooms, and the number of loungers on deck, for which I was grateful. I was relieved not to have to wake up at dawn to stake my claim on a seat.

Who is on board?

Mostly couples, a few families, and a handful of solo travellers , all ranging in age. We had a lot of longtime Ritz loyalists, many who’d never cruised before, finally willing to give it a shot, thanks to Ilma .

Describe the cabins .

Spacious, airy, plenty of room to breathe. My cabin – a Grand Suite – had both dining and living areas and a bedroom that I could close off while sleeping, avoiding any gorgeous Mediterranean sunlight let in by the floor-to-ceiling glass sliding door too early in the morning. Running the whole width of the suite, the door opened onto a balcony to rival the decks above. I had two loungers and two armchairs all to myself, of which I made ample use.

I appreciated the two separate closet spaces (more than I have in my current apartment) with drawers and hanging space – with enough hangers! – in addition to open shelving, which I used for easy access to the items I reached for the most: jewellery, bags, and a sarong for the pool.

As for the linens, they were all from Frette , including the bathrobe, which now has the distinction of being the most comfortable robe I’ve ever used and made me realize how scratchy other robes turn out to be.

The colour scheme was, like the rest of the superyacht, refined and understated – soft greys, whites, with a pop of colour from the teal couch.

I relished using the Diptyque products in the bathroom during every shower. However, I did have to hunt for the waste bin, which turned out not to be a separate receptacle but a drawer that was part of the vanity and took some getting used to.

Tell us about the crew.

They were attentive and engaged but not overbearing and often knew what I wanted before I did (thinking of the iced oat milk latte I was offered one morning on the pool deck – it was just what I needed). We were told some of the crew had come from other Ritz properties, and I could tell a few were still getting their sea legs but were well on their way to adapting to the ship.

My suite ambassador, Horacio, was a particular standout. He always anticipated what I’d need for the coming day – an extra bottle of Moët early on, then a fresh bottle of sparkling water later. He also ensured my welcome-night dress was freshly pressed for dinner and the following party, which I was especially grateful for, as there was no iron in the suite (there are two in the guest launderette, though).

What food and drink options are available on board?

You’ll never want for a drink or snack on Ilma . There are five restaurants, all with distinctive types of cuisine – Tides, Memorī, Beach House, Mistral, and the pièce de resistance: Seta su Ilma . Headed up by Michelin-starred chef Fabio Trabocchi, Seta is the only restaurant on board that requires an additional fee to dine there. I’d recommend making a reservation as soon as you embark.

I experienced Seta (and it truly is an experience ) on my last night on the superyacht; it was quite the send-off. Dinner is an 11-course tasting menu with a wine pairing for every course, so everyone told me to eat light the day of, and I’m glad I did, especially since my favourite course (Wagyu beef calabrese) came last before dessert. Seta was the most intimate of the restaurants, with around 40 seats, and all of the tables had staggered seating times. Our (chatty) table was one of the later seats, and we closed the restaurant.

And when you’re more parched than peckish, there are six bars aboard, most adjacent to their respective restaurants. My favourite was the Marina Bar, in the aft of the ship. Two of the walls transform out into open-air decks with glass panelling beneath you, so you can get a glimpse of the water below while you sip your cocktail of choice (mine was naturally a piña colada).

Is there a spa on board, and is it worth visiting?

Yes and yes – treatments available include the usual suspects, like massages and facials, and salon services for both men and women. The Barber – an extension of the Pisterzi brand, which has locations in New York and Milan – and The Salon are the go-to spots for haircuts, shaves, manicures, and all grooming needs in between. (I heard nothing but rave reviews about The Barber from the men aboard – I heard some variation of “best shave of my life” every time.) There’s also a steam room and sauna (one of each for men and women), which you can enjoy even without another treatment booked.

I’m always carrying around a tight back, so I was delighted to be treated to a deep muscle massage and finally feel my shoulders fall below my ears. Before my treatment, my massage therapist asked the usual questions – any injuries, which spots needed the most work, etc. – but then she applied two different oils and asked which I liked better. The one I chose meant my body needed relaxing, naturally. During the treatment, there was a bowl of rose petals on the floor below my head, which I found to be a nice touch. The massage itself was just the amount of pressure I like – a lot – without verging into too much . Afterwards, the steam room and sauna were offered to me, but I was eager to heat up by the pool instead.

What about activities and entertainment?

You won’t find a theatre or auditorium onboard Ilma, and that’s because life is best lived on the decks, so I found – catching sun by one of the two pools or taking advantage of the adult playground that is the “aquabana” – a floating lounge space off the aft of the ship where you can swim in the sea, kayak, paddleboard, or relax with your feet in the water under one of the cabanas. These are common on private yachts, and in keeping with giving passengers a taste of the yachting lifestyle, Ilma acquired the largest one made yet (so I’m told).

There was plenty of live music throughout the voyage: a DJ by the pool deck or a live band in the Living Room – Ilma ’s central lounge space with a coffee bar and rotating gelato flavours by day and a busy cocktail bar by night.

When you’ve had enough sun (hard to imagine, I know), there’s not only a gym but spinning and movement studios, all expanded on Ilma , due to their popularity on Evrima . I had the best intention of spending one morning testing a treadmill, but whenever I walked by, it seemed like the other guests had it under control.

Instead, I power-walked the decks, taking in all the art – you can find an original Hockney, Warhol, and Picasso onboard – and window-shopping at the Bvlgari boutique.

How was the experience for families?

Surprisingly welcoming! I did not expect to see so many families on board, but there was dedicated programming for children through Ritz Kids , as well as several children simply enjoying the amenities alongside the rest of us: dancing, swimming, and sipping juices.

Where did it sail and how were the excursions? Did anything stand out?

We sailed from Barcelona to Saint-Tropez , where we anchored overnight before disembarking in Monte Carlo. The overnight port call in Saint-Tropez gave us plenty of time for both planned excursions, which ranged from winery tours to a pastry-making class and taking the tender into town for your own exploring.

For my excursion, I took a tour of nearby Port Grimaud, a planned community built in the ‘60s with a network of canals meant to mimic  Venice , followed by a seafood tasting at a local restaurant before grabbing a digestif along the harbour back in Saint-Tropez with some of my fellow tour mates. I appreciated how much time we were given on our tour to wander – we had portions of planned activities, like a boat tour through the aforementioned canals, but plenty of time for our discovery.

Are there any stand-out sustainability or green initiatives related to this cruise?

Ilma is the first build in the collection to have a specialised gas system installed, which makes it flexible for current – and future – sustainable fuels, like bio- or synthetic fuels, and the next member of the fleet, Luminara (launching in 2025), will have the same.

Finally, give a sentence or two on why the cruise is worth booking.

A voyage on Ilma is worth booking to experience the luxury of the yachting lifestyle wherever, whenever – with the full service of a hotel.

The Minimum Water Depth for Different Types of Boats

Not knowing your boat's draft can have disastrous consequences. This article lists the draft of various boat types. Read it so you don't find yourself stuck in the mud.

Here's the average draft for common boat types:

• Sailboat cruisers - 4 to 7 feet
• Daysailers - 3 to 5 feet
• Catamarans - 2 to 4 feet
• Motor yacht cruisers - 1 to 4 feet
• Dinghy - a few inches
• Trawlers - 8 feet and up

I need to point out that those numbers are relative - ballpark figures. So let me tell you a bit more about them - you might learn a trick or two that will help you stay afloat.

What is draft and why is it so super important, sailboat cruisers - draft of 4 to 7 feet, daysailers - draft of 3 to 5 feet, catamarans - draft of 2 to 4 feet, motor yacht cruisers - 1 to 4 feet, dinghy - just a few inches of draft, trawlers - lots and lots of feet, so what to do with all this info.

For those who haven't encountered this term before - draft (or draught) is the distance between the water surface and the deepest point of the boat underwater. So practically speaking, the value of draft is equal to the minimum water depth required for smooth floating. Go any shallower and you will scrape your boat's bottom.

You absolutely must know the draft of any boat you are driving. While scraping some paint off of your car when you misestimate the distance between you and the lamp post will mostly just cost you the repair fee, 'getting in touch' with the sea bed can cost you much more than that.

Your life even.

Ok, that might have been a bit too dramatic.

But depending on whether the sea bed consists of sand, seaweed or rocks, you can either get beached and become immobile, or your propellers might get tangled in whatever is down there, or you can pierce a hole into your boat.

Boat repairs are expensive, even if you got lucky and just scraped the surface. Getting towed to a safe depth can also be expensive and dangerous to your boat. Simply put, not respecting your draft can put a dent in your pocket and turn a nice cruise into a logistical nightmare.

Therefore, whatever boat you get on, know your draft! You can find this number often in the cockpit. If not, consult the boat's manual or the internet at the very least. I usually double that value and never go into places where the plotter shows a lower number. If I, by any chance, don't have a depth measuring device and am operating on just a map, I am even more careful.

To tell you the truth, I start to sweat nervously once the depth goes into single digits.

Now let's get back to the categories mentioned above.

This is the kind of boat you will most likely find yourself on if you go on your typical cruise. A classical sailboat, some 30 to 50 feet long. Its draft will probably be between 4 and 7 feet. The reason this category has a rather deep draft is because of its keel. While the keel is a necessary component of a sailboat and makes your life much easier and your boat much more stable, the price you pay is that there is a long piece of steel below the boat's belly. A piece of steel you gotta be mindful of when you get close to the shore.

To give you a specific example: the Beneteau Oceanis 281, which is 28.5 ft long and has 4 ft of draft. Staying with the same line but moving up to a larger size, the Beneteau Oceanis 45 has 5.9 ft of draft. Give or take a few inches, depending on the specific year's model.

But by no means take these numbers for granted. See this as a rough guide and check for the specific draft of the boat you are on.

Daysailer's draft tend to be smaller than that of cruisers because daysailers are smaller, usually 14 to 20 ft long.

The 14 ft long Hunter 140 has a draft of 3 feet, the Ultimate 20 has a draft of 5 feet. The good thing about these smaller boats is that they often have a retractable keel. So while sailing, you enjoy all the stabilizing benefits of having a keel, and when it is time to dock, you pull the keel up and the draft reduces, from several feet to several inches.

To compare apples to apples, we are talking about similarly sized cats as the aforementioned cruisers here. The reason the draft is smaller than that of cruisers is that since cats are more stable by nature, and also because they have two keels, they can afford to have them smaller. Also, because of their two hulls and the subsequent higher buoyancy, they tend to cut into the water less.

This generally makes it possible to voyage into shallower waters with them than with a monohull of the same size. But as mentioned before, make sure you know the specific draft of your boat before untying the ropes that lock your boat to the pier. Apologies for repeating myself but I just can't stress that enough. Especially since on a cat, you will be scraping two bottoms, not just one.

The reason you are seeing an even lower number here is that motor yachts don't have keels. They don't technically need them. If I were you I would be extra careful with these though. Scraping paint off of your keel is safer than piercing a hole directly through your hull.

Yea, yea, I know I am a bit too dramatic. Better safe than sorry though.

To provide an example, the Jeanneau Prestige 46, a nearly 48 feet long boat has a draft of just a bit over 3 feet. To remind you, a similarly sized Beneteau Oceanis 45 has a draft of 5.9 ft.

A dinghy is your best friend when it comes to getting around shallow spots. That's why when you anchor in a nice bay for the night, you drop your dinghy on water and use that to get to the shore. Not only is their draft just a few inches deep, they are light and their bottoms are made to withstand all kinds of abuse. So driving your dinghy full speed onto a beach is still relatively safe.

Giving you a specific figure here would make little sense. Since dinghies are small, their draft is influenced by whether you had a big breakfast before getting on one, or a small one.

The reason I even mention these is not because I expect you to be a captain of a huge fishing trawler someday. But these boats generally serve as a good pointer of where you can go with your average boat, even without looking at the instruments. Since even the smaller trawlers tend to have a draft of around 8 feet, you can be sure that if you go where they do, you are in the safe zone. On several occasions, they provided peace of mind when I found myself wanting to sail in between two shallow points or if I was not sure whether such and such bay has enough depth.

In case by a trawler you mean a normal-sized recreational boat, which is similar to a classic motor yacht, but such that doesn't plane, (and thus is slower) these have a larger draft relative to their similarly sized motor yacht counterparts. Usually not as large as a similarly sized sailboat, though that can happen too. This is because they are not made for speed but rather for comfortable onboard living, which shows in the design.

As an example, a 42 ft Treworgy Trawler has a draft of 4 ft and 9 inches - compare that to the aforementioned examples.

It is quite simple. As mentioned, before you set sail, make sure you know your draft. The value is usually written down in a place where you can see the number when standing behind the helm, but if not, find out where it is (or what it is).

Add a value you are comfortable with to provide some safety cushion and then compare it with what your depth meter tells you. Know that the depth is usually measured from the bottom of the hull, not the deepest point of the keel. So if you are on a sailboat, add the keel size too.

How do you know how deep your keel is?

If you don't have a depth meter, consult your maps. They likely won't be as detailed but they will give you the necessary info.

And when you have all this added up and compared, be careful. Try to be reasonable when making a judgement on where to go. I have seen too many damaged boats to say otherwise. Don't risk touching the seabed with your boat. It is very rarely worth the potential damage.

PCG to revise rules for private boats amid Alice Guo ‘yacht escape’

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) will revise its pre-departure inspection regulations on private boats amid the claim of dismissed Bamban, Tarlac Mayor Alice Guo that they left the Philippines via three boat transfers and one of the vessels used was a yacht.

PCG Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan made the statement at the Senate finance subcommittee's briefing on the proposed P180.89-billion budget of the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and its attached agencies and corporations for 2025.

"In our existing memorandum circular on pre-departure inspection (PDI), vessels which are non-common carriers are not included in the PDI and that is the reason why we are now revising the circular so the Coast Guard will have role in the enforcement in these kind of vessels," Gavan told the Senate panel.

Senate Minority Leader Aquilino "Koko" Pimentel III asked Gavan if the PCG has a role in preventing incidents similar to the case of Guo.

"May role pa dapat ang PCG doon? Na-intercept niyo ba dapat yon?" Pimentel asked.

According to Gavan, the PCG is eyeing to implement the revised PDI guidelines by October.

The revision will "include the non-common carriers in the implementation of pre-departure inspection," the PCG chief said.

Gavan also told Pimentel that the PCG has already a legal basis in revising such guidelines and they do not need a new law to implement this.

With this, Pimentel concluded that the PCG "could've done that even before" Guo's case happened.

"Why do we need an Alice Guo incident before we can anticipate such a scenario and cover it?" the senator asked.

Gavan explained that the regulation was crafted in 2009.

"I'm taking my role now to revise it," Gavan said.

"With this development, the Coast Guard recognizes that we should adapt, we should do more. We'll be coordinating with MARINA (Maritime Industry Authority) to come up with a better regulation to cover this one," he added.

Pimentel acknowledged Gavan's honesty.

"So may nakakita ng butas and I’m sure ‘di lang sila ang gumamit ng butas na 'yan. So ganun pala talaga ka-porous ang ating boundaries, ang ating mga borders, ang ating coasts. So it’s time to, I hope the Philippine Coast Guard will share your realization with the other agencies na ganyan," Pimentel said.

The senator likewise echoed this reminder to the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) as he recalled a privilege speech delivered by Senator Grace Poe last February 2023 about the alleged "human smuggling" at Ninoy Aquino International Airport using private aircraft.

"Kasi we were imagining the various ways na nakaalis sila meron akong footage na nakita pinalabas ata ni Senator Grace Poe 'yung nag-private jet. Hinatid sila mismo ng van nila doon sa mismong doorstep ng private jet," Pimentel noted.

"Parang helpless 'yung authorities nung sinara na yung door e (of the private jet). Wala na... We just accept what is written. Siguro kung five names dito, tapos walong tao [ang nandoon] eh hindi natin alam. So that's how porous our boundaries and borders are even by air," he went on.

The minority leader told the CAAP and PCG to "shape up" as these incidents may have national security implications.

"Let us shape up kasi delikado po...'yun ang concern natin the national security implication of having such porous borders. Porous na tayo by geography pero ang problema by legal framework anticipated na nga natin yon eh... It's in the execution,"he said.

In one of the Senate investigations, Guo claimed that she, along with her supposed siblings--Wesley and Shiela, left the country by sea.

She said that they climbed aboard a yacht docked at a port in Metro Manila and left at around 10 p.m. sometime in July.

After traveling on the yacht, Guo said they shifted to a bigger vessel. She said she doesn't know the exact location where they made the transfer.

Afterwards, Guo said her group stayed in one room for days. She added that she wasn’t aware of the time because they were told not to use their cellphones.

Guo said she and her supposed siblings then boarded a small boat to reach Malaysia.

It took a month before the Philippine government became aware that Guo and her siblings had already left the country in July.

Alice Guo is the subject of multiple complaints, one of which was filed with a Tarlac court, which ordered her arrest in connection to her alleged connections to the Philippine Offshore Gaming Operator (POGO) in Bamban, Tarlac that was raided by a joint task force composed of law enforcement and military agencies for alleged illegal activities.

Among the complaints the dismissed mayor is facing are graft, money laundering, material misrepresentation and human trafficking.

Alice Guo was arrested in Indonesia on September 4 and arrived in the Philippines on September 6. —RF, GMA Integrated News
