New this year, we are very excited to be teaching RYA Powerboat Courses in the stunning Salcombe Harbour.
Learning to drive a powerboat safely and effectively is a crucial part of having a relaxing day on the water, and we have something on offer for everyone. Our RYA Powerboat Level 1 course is ideal for kids aged 8 – 12 who are looking to take their first foray into powerboat driving. Our experienced instructors will show your young-ones the most effective ways to drive boats (both wheel-steered and tiller-steered) and help provide them with confidence at the helm!
Our Powerboat Level 2 course is designed for adults and kids aged 12 or more – requiring no prior experience, it teaches all the skills taught in the Level 1 course, but takes them to a greater level of detail whilst also supporting the practical skills with theory knowledge – including knowledge of tides, weather and practical navigation. With your Powerboat Level 2 certificate, you can apply for an International Certificate of Competence (ICC) which allows you to hire boats internationally. The RYA PB2 certificate is also a pre-requisite for many jobs on the water!
As well as our formal RYA Powerboat training courses, we also offer refresher sessions, local knowledge teaching and familiarisation session. If you’ve just got a new boat, haven’t boated for a while or are going on holiday and fancy a refresher, please get in touch – we can put something together to meet your needs!
Our courses are taught across our two boats, Granite and Wally – you can see more about the boats here . We can often skew the course more towards one or the other if you have a preference. We can also conduct own-boat-tuition, delivering one of the RYA courses on your own boat – if this is of interest, please get in touch .
RYA Powerboat Level 1
Minimum age: 8 years old
The RYA Powerboat Level 1 is a fantastic introduction to driving boats for kids aged 8-12. It covers how to drive a powerboat safely both at slow speeds and quickly, how to moor alongside a pontoon, pick up a mooring and more. It also covers essential safety equipment and rescue techniques including man-overboard.
Our two day RYA Powerboat Level 1 course will give your child the skills they need to safely handle both tiller and wheel driven powerboats.
RYA Powerboat Level 2
Minimum age: 12 years old
The RYA Powerboat Level 2 course is targeted at adults and kids older than 12 and is an international standard for powerboat handling competency. No prior experience is required, although for younger students we often recommend attending a Powerboat Level 1 course first in order to be able to get the most from the course.
With your Powerboat Level 2 you can apply for an International Certificate of Competence which allows you to hire boats up to 10m long internationally.
Own-Boat RYA Powerboat Tuition
Available for both courses
If you have your own boat and would be interested in doing either the Powerboat Level 1 or Powerboat Level 2 course on your own craft, we can definitely help! It can be an excellent way to learn the best ways of handling your specific boat.
We can teach both courses on pretty much any type of powerboat, be it a RIB, wheel-steered ‘Boston Whaler’-type boat, tiller-steered outboard boat, traditional launch and anything in between – get in touch with us if you’re not sure.

“We had the best boating experience!!! Kevin was so helpful and great to work with!! He went above and beyond expectations. He took us to the sandbar to search for sand dollars!! We also saw two dolphins in the intercostal. One of the best days ever!!”
COLLEEN STEPENSON RETTINGER
“I couldn’t have been more lucky to be out on the water learning and experiencing sailing, power boating, rules of the water, and knots with such a great instructor. Kevin is very knowledgable and calm on the water. If you haven’t been on the water this would be the best way to start. Kevin has great people to help him out when needed. I never felt unsafe or uncomfortable. These courses gave me the confidence and skills to take my boat out.”
“If you’re looking for the best instruction on how to sail or operate a power boat, Kevin is your guy. Through his relaxed and calm demeanor and detailed instruction, I gained the confidence I needed to dock a boat and change tack to dodge the ferries. He will practice with you until it becomes second nature.”
Kevin has been boating for 25 years. His love and passion for teaching and boating awarded him Instructor of the year from American Sailing Association for 2015.
Al has over 25 years on the water and tens of thousands of cruising hours under his belt. He maintains his 100 Ton Captians license and when he isn’t sailing can be found kayaking or fishing for trout in western North Carolina with his wife. Al has a passion for the sea that is unrivaled and experience that surpasses most.

Vessel navigation and propulsion systems, cargo handling and container tracking systems at ports and on board ships, and shipyard inventories and automated processes, are all controlled using software that is fundamental to smooth running operations. Highly-skilled, non-ethical hackers continue to demonstrate their ability to penetrate systems that are used by the maritime industry, with potentially disastrous consequences. Events over the last four years continue to suggest that these types of systems are growing increasingly vulnerable to these forms of attack, resulting in extremely costly results for the sector.

MCA Superyacht / SV Engineer training for vessels up to 9000kW and 3000GT
Although there are different training routes and licensing authorities/countries under which engineers may qualify to work on superyachts, a common, broadly accepted route is the MCA Engineer Small Vessel Training Route. The MCA recently changed its engineering qualification structure in order to simplify the number and level of qualifications across the industry. They have pulled together pre-existing qualifications, leading to certificates of competency (CoC) restricted to yachts (and other small vessels) only. This single generic qualification is now referred to as " Engineer Officer Small Vessel Certificate of Competency" .
Please consult a recognized training provider before booking any training courses and view the "Engineer Officer Small Vessel of Competency" Marine Information note, found on the MCA website.
The AEC is your gateway ticket into becoming an engineer, it is, therefore, essential to hold this qualification, gain sea time and work on your training record book (TRB) in order to progress in the engine room.
There are three routes to obtaining a 2 nd Engineer Officer Small Vessel Certificate of Competency’ (Previously known as Y4):
This standard route benefits those who study through an accepted route of education involving MSQ (Maritime Studies Qualifications) modules. Completion of these will result in a Diploma in Maritime Studies: Small Vessel Engineer’. This route is extremely beneficial to superyacht engineers because of the reduced sea time required and because some of the syllabi can be completed on-board.
In order to follow this route, you must:
This route is for existing seafarers serving on small vessels. You will not be required to complete the Diploma in Maritime Studies: Small Vessel Engineer , however you will need to complete a preparatory college course and SQA written examinations.
To be eligible to register for a study programme you must meet the following requirements:
In addition to the above, candidates must complete the following in order to be issued with a notice of eligibility (noe) to sit an mca oral examination:.
In addition to completing all of the experienced seafarer route requirements above, the candidate must:
2. Hold the applicable ancillary and safety course certificates listed in section 5:
- All STCW Basic Training Certificates - PSCRB - Advanced Fire Fighting - Proficiency in Medical First Aid - Human Element, Leadership and Management (HELM Operational Level)
3. Hold a valid ENG1 Medical or ENG1 Medical Equivalent Certificate 4. Pass the MCA oral examination for Second Engineer Officers on Small Vessels less than 9000 kW, less than 3000 GT, unlimited area, III/2 (syllabus available online, go to www.gov.uk and search “Small Vessel Oral Examination Syllabus”)
This route is for those candidates who hold a relevant engineering degree/diploma/apprenticeship. These qualifications should be sent to an MCA-approved training provider who will analyze their relevance and explain what the individual should do in order to obtain a 2 nd Engineer Officer Small Vessel CoC.
More information on the types of Graduate and Apprenticeship holders that qualify for this training route can be found in section 3.5 of the MIN 524 Notice .
If you are deemed eligible to enter into this programme you will need to apply directly to an MCA-approved nautical college. In order to find an appropriate college, search www.gov.uk for “MCA-approved nautical colleges".
In order to gain the Certificate of Competency you must:
In order to qualify for the issue of this Certificate of Competency you must meet the following requirements:
- 6 months of sea service on 350 kW vessels & 6 months seagoing service on vessels 750 kW. (greater or equal to kW provided)
FOR MORE INFO GO TO MCA WEBSITE MIN524
The above method is the new MCA-approved and advised route to become a YACHT engineer, there are however other options available to you:
Experienced Marine Engineers: Marine engineers with qualifications for larger vessels, such as commercial tankers, container vessels, dredgers etc. or those with merchant navy tickets are usually able to work on yachts with these tickets. It is important to contact the MCA who will review these qualifications and ascertain a plan of action for you.
USCG: It is also possible to qualify as a yacht engineer through the United States Coast Guard route, again different flag states will have different requirements and it is advisable to contact the MCA for any further advice or information.

Stopped at a Bluewater while delivering a 42' Yellowfin from Edgartown, MA to West Palm, Beach FL. This particular Bluewater Yacht Yard, is an absolutely gorgeous facility; with plenty of helpful staff standing by & ready to assist with tying up, topping of our fuel tanks and grabbing a quick bite to eat. The fuel dock is massive with plenty of gas & diesel fuel pumps to accommodate (more then a few of) even the biggest of motor yachts. The slips were all floating docks w/ 2, to 4 fixed (composite) pilings with appropriately sized (working) power & water hookups at each. The entire property was pristine, as were the majority of the boats occupying each of the slips onsite. In short, I would highly recommend Bluewater Yacht Yards to any visiting yachtsmen, or transient boater seeking an upscale marina to call home for a night or two!!
UPDATE: June 2018 After a string of positive experiences (including several I have not written about) this visit was a crushing disappointment. Support on the docks and management both fell through. Perhaps they need more adult supervision on the weekend. For context I am a delivery skipper who often sails owner-aboard, training, and insurance check-off trips. I'm on and off a lot of docks. My expectations of dock hands are pretty low. We came in from offshore with a general reservation confirmed and specified a day ahead when we got back in range of cell service. Bluewater decided to put us at the West end of their fuel dock overnight and then move us in the morning when another boat left. Fine. On arrival the dockhands were inept. Not just one of them. Three. They had absolutely no clue whatsoever about springing onto a dock. While being blown off we (owner being trained) got a breast line to the dock hand and asked for a couple of turns around a cleat so we could pull against the line and snug in. The young lady stood on the dock looking at us and said "I've got it." Nope. You don't, not unless you want 1. to let go, 2. rope burns, or 3. to go swimming. It took forever to convince her to put a turn around the cleat. Even then she left a LOT of slack in the line. Note the whole time the owner is juggling his new-to-him boat while being blown off the dock. Finally the line was cleated (which is NOT the same as a turn around the cleat with no slack and stand by). *sigh* We ended up 50 feet from where we wanted to be. Simply not okay. As usual with dockhands the focus on the bow line meant the bow pulled in and a lot of adjustment on our part after struggling to put competent crew on the dock. We ASKED if they wanted us to move the boat back to the far western end of the dock so we wouldn't be in the way overnight. We were told we were fine. Minutes later they told us to move to the face dock inside between D2 and D3 (see http://www.bluewateryachtcenter.com/marina). Once again the issues with poor line handling by dock hands and no--absolutely no--concept of springing. We had perhaps 15 feet of margin, combined, between the front and back of the boat. The owner could not possibly have done it alone. With the inept dock support *I* would have had trouble. We get in and settled and they refuse to move shore power cords from other boats so we can plug in. Only one available 50A extension so we get to choose between A/C and power for batteries, fridge, etc. Lovely. Welcome to Hampton. Then we are told we'll be moving again. In the morning. By which time we expect to be in (four crew) NOVA, FL, and MD. Thanks just tons. Oh - to add insult to injury the slip they want to move us to is the one they were going to move us to from the fuel dock. Just leave us on the fuel dock where the owner can get off and move to the final slip where the owner can get in . This was not a simple mistake. It was a cascade of poor performance and bad management. One (1) star, rounded up to three (3) only because of past experience. Very disappointed. Without some assurance of training for dockhands and better planning for slips Bluewater goes in the category of dropping competent crew on the dock and shooing the dock hands away as hazards to navigation as they are in so many places. Facilities: A+ On-site restaurant: A Overall condition: A Total Experience: D- GM Dave: If you want a positive curriculum for dock hand training let me know. I'll write one up for you. Free. I like you guys and want you to succeed. UPDATE: March 2017 On another delivery this time entering the Chesapeake we limped in under tow after a cascade of failures. The team at Bluewater Yachting Center were great. The details are complicated but we were cold--really cold--on a boat with little to no maneuverability of its own. Advance phone calls and coordination when the tow picked us up had Bluewater ready for us and boy were they ready. There were at least four people on the dock waiting for us. Everyone was very solicitous. I usually tie up myself but under the circumstances I was grateful for the help. The warm shower, the nice meal at Surf Rider, and the response to every request with either "yes" or "let's see what we can do" where a great relief. All of my inbound and outbound deliveries will include a stop at Bluewater Yachting Center. We have to press up fuel and water - why not do it somewhere that so greatly values our presence? Tell 'em I sent you. ORIGINAL: We were here in January 2017 waiting for a weather window to head offshore. Service was exemplary. Cheerful staff run hundreds of feet of hose to let us fill water, took care of fuel needs, and were generally helpful in every possible way. The onsite restaurant is very pleasant although the menu is heavily tilted to fried foods. I used to head offshore from Little Creek but with the decline in the Vinings marinas there Bluewater Sailing Center is an easy choice. Recommended.
