Royal connections through the ages

Celebrating the rya’s royal legacy.

From holidays to yacht racing, The Royal Family has a long history of seafaring.

As we celebrate the Coronation of our new Monarch, His Majesty King Charles III, we look back at the RYA’s connections with The Royal Family and their passion for spending time on the water.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh

Over the centuries the Monarchy has sailed aboard 83 royal yachts, including the most recent, HMY Britannia, which often hosted the RYA Council meetings during Cowes Week.

In addition to her diplomatic duties on Royal Tours, HMY Britannia was also a vessel for family holidays. During the summer months, The Royal Family would often take off on what became known as the aptly named Western Isles tour, cruising around Scotland.

In 1948, Her Royal Highness Princess Elizabeth, Duchess of Edinburgh and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh were listed as new members of the RYA (known then as the Yacht Racing Association).

It became the Royal Yachting Association in 1952 when Sir Ralph Gore, then President, spoke of “Her Majesty’s recent command that the name of the Association will in future be the Royal Yachting Association."

The Duke of Edinburgh sailed frequently with Prince Charles in the Dragon Class keelboat Bluebottle, a wedding present to Her Majesty The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh from the Island Sailing Club in Cowes, Isle of Wight. Bluebottle is the only British Dragon to have won an Olympic medal, picking up a bronze at the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was our Patron for many years and the Duke was elected as President of the RYA for the first time in 1956. It was under his watch, the first ever RYA Training Committee was formed.

His Majesty King Charles

A keen watersports fan, His Majesty King Charles III has been known to enjoy scuba diving and sailing – and was one of the first Royal members in the world to discover windsurfing in the 1970s.

Among many boating-related engagements over the years as The Prince of Wales, he visited the Olympic and Paralympic sailing venue at Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA) in the build up to the 2012 Games, christening the boat of 49er due Stevie Morrison and Ben Rhodes.

The Princess Royal

Following in her father's footsteps, Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal has been President of the RYA since 1987 and is also Patron of the RYA Foundation .

A keen sailor, Princess Anne and her husband, Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, have kept a Rustler 44, Ballochbuie, at Ardfern in Scotland and have enjoyed cruising, sometimes as far as the Hebrides.

Amongst her duties as President, The Princess Royal has chaired almost every RYA AGM. She regularly visits sailing clubs across the UK to mark milestones, shows her support for the British Sailing Team and presents the annual RYA Volunteer Awards .

In an interview for RYA Magazine , she speaks fondly of her long history and love for sailing: “For me it’s important to have time away and sailing really is time away. It gives you a complete change from anything you’re doing and from my perspective, having a boat on the west coast of Scotland gives me two things – time away and in an attractive area.”

The Prince of Wales and Princess of Wales

The Prince and Princess of Wales also share a love for being outdoors and spending time on the water. The Princess of Wales has incorporated her love for sailing into her royal duties as Patron of sailing charity, the  1851 Trust .

When she was appointed, she said: “I feel very fortunate to have enjoyed sailing from a young age and I know it is a great way of providing young people with the opportunity to develop skills and confidence”.

As a family, the Prince and Princess of Wales enjoy spending time on the coast, introducing their own three children to sailing.

Russia’s Port of Novorossiysk

Russia’s Port of Novorossiysk

If you plan to move commercial freight into or out of Russia, some knowledge about the potential seaports can be beneficial. Since the ports highlighted in this article are among Russia’s largest, there’s a good chance that your freight will travel through them.

The Port of Novorossiysk is Russia’s major Black Sea port and home to the Sheskharis Oil Terminal and the Fleet of the Russian Navy on the Black Sea. It is also a terminus for the oil pipeline coming from northwestern Kazakhstan’s Tengiz Field, making it the Black Sea’s largest oil hub.

The Port of Novorossiysk is located at the mouth of Tsemes Bay. Throughout the year, the Bay is ice-free and navigable. During the winter, navigation is occasionally halted due to the deadly northern bora wind.

The NCSP Group (Novorossiysk Commercial Sea Port Group) is the major commercial seaport operator in Russia. The corporation is headquartered in Novorossiysk and operates the Novorossiysk Port, as well as the Baltic ports of Baltiysk and Primorsk. The Port’s facilities are connected to a vast network of rails and highways, providing access to the important population, industrial, and agricultural areas.

Port History

Russia’s Port of Novorossiysk

Throughout history, the Black Sea has served as a crossroads, with a wide range of commodities passing through it on their way to Central Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. The Black Sea water is less salty than the ocean as it receives freshwater from the Danube, Dnestr, Dnepr, and Don rivers.

Back in 1872, a committee was appointed by the royal mandate of Tsar Alexander II to locate and determine suitable sites for a new seaport on the Black Sea coast. The proximity to the Vladikavkaz Railway was a key factor in site selection. The new Port of Novorossiysk was constructed on the site of the ancient coast defense forts. The first vessel, a French ‘Mingreli’ filled with grain, sailed off to the new Port of Novorossiysk in 1888.

The Port of Novorossiysk grew rapidly in the nineteenth century. New berths (West, East, and a few more) opened by 1895. Most timber exports of pre-revolutionary Russia flowed through the St. Petersburg and Arkhangelsk Ports, but moved to Novorossiysk afterward. In 1918, the Port opened its first major shipyard. In 1926, the Novorossiysk-based company EXPORTLES was founded, and it quickly became Russia’s exclusive timber seller.

By 1940, the Port of Novorossiysk had established itself as one of the most important ports in the Soviet Union’s south. It comprised 4 loading areas, a cabotage site, import and cement docks, and the West Embankment. In the early-to-mid 1960s, Sheskharis Oil Terminal, ‘Shirokiy’ Dock, workshops, a passenger harbor, and even a ‘Sailors’ Palace were added. By 1980, the NCSP’s timber terminal had expanded to 56.8 hectares and had become a federally significant enterprise.

The Port of Novorossiysk went public in 1992 and was renamed NOVOROSLESEXPORT before being privatized. It became a multi-purpose harbor that handled a variety of freight. In 1999, the first container terminal opened. The NCSP Group acquired NOVOROSLESEXPORT in 2006. In 1985, the Novorossiysk Shipyard, launched the 60,000 tons capacity drydock. In 2006, the shipyard joined the NCSP Group.

Construction of a new oil transshipment complex on Tsemes Bay, near Sheskharis Cape, began in 1960 as part of Russia’s oil industry growth initiative. The Terminal operates three docks, its tank fields cover 99,000 m3. The Sheskharis harbor accounted for almost 30 percent of Russian oil exports by 2012.

The Naval Base of Novorossiysk was founded in 1920. It has five berths that can accommodate up to 100 warships ranging in size from 1,500 to 30,000 DWT. The Russian Navy’s seven diesel-powered submarines are housed at the submarine base.

Russia’s Port of Novorossiysk

Port Commerce: Business Profile, Operations, Size, Capacity, Turnover

The NCSP Group unites 8 corporate companies, delivering Stevedoring and Additional Port Services, Fleet Services, and Other Services. The Stevedoring and Additional Port Services Division, which provides for the majority of revenue, receives and moves cargo by pipeline, train, and truck, assembles shiploads, and transfers it to vessels. The NCSP’s Stevedoring Services include loading and unloading of petroleum and petroleum products, mineral fertilizers, metal products, containers, grains, timber, chemicals, raw sugar, as well as fuel bunkering. The Fleet Services Division provides towing, tugging, waste collection, firefighting services, ship-fuelling services. Other Services include freight forwarding, storage, ship repair and maintenance, customs documentation.

The NCSP’s shares have been listed on the Moscow Stock Exchange, while the Group’s GDRs have been traded on the London Stock Exchange.

Most of the NCSP’s growth last year was export-driven, propelled by the ongoing containerization of export cargo in Russia. Imports rose as well. A major factor in the higher import total is the lifting restrictions on Turkish imports to Russia.

The NCSP’s Container Terminal, opened in 1999, handles containers, provides warehousing, and facilitates the loading and unloading of container platforms for distribution. The Panamax container ships can dock at the NCSP Container Terminal. The terminal is equipped for loading containers from sea shore and on train cars, storing refrigerated reefer containers, sorting and warehousing containers, restuffing, and customs inspections. This year, Novorossiysk’s container cargo volumes continued to grow, although the port’s major focus is still bulk liquid cargoes, primarily oil. However, moving forward, officials expect this portion of the port’s business to decrease, as the development of the container cargo business has become one of the priorities for Novorossiysk’s executives.

The harbor at the NCSP was 344 hectares in size in 2017, with a land area of 278.12 ha. Novorossiysk Port comprises 89 berths with a total length of 15,627 meters and an annual capacity of 208,793 thousand tons (2017). The entire port territory is divided into the following areas: Passenger Terminal, Sheskharis Oil Terminal, three cargo terminals (Central, East, and West). The NCSP maintains open-air and covered storage. The Port covers 51 hectares with timber and general cargo storage and 14 hectares with container storage. The NCSP’s transportation infrastructure includes19 railway lines, 13 of which are used to load and unload the freight. The daily capacity of the Port’s roadways is 100 vehicles.

The NCSP Group’s consolidated cargo turnover for 7M 2021 was 67.4 million tons, down 2.3 percent from the previous year. The overall amount of transshipped liquid cargo was 53.1 million tons. Crude oil plummeted to 31.7 million tons (7.5 percent down). Transshipment of dry cargo increased to 14.3 million tons (6.6 percent up).

Advantages of Shipping with the NCSP

Momentum is already building in Novorossiysk, making the port attractive for entrepreneurs. The Port of Novorossiysk is now finishing an ambitious large-scale building project that will enable it to compete for the title of busiest and largest container hub in the region and increase its annual container capacity to 1 million TEU.

The NCSP is linked to international logistic lanes that connect Russia to Southeast Asia, countries of the Mediterranean basin, North Africa, the Middle East, South America, and other parts of the world, making it the main transit route for Russian imports and exports .

Shippers from China and other Asia-Pacific countries are already interested in the expanded NCSP since it will allow them to transfer cargo to Europe faster. The Shanghai-St. Petersburg sea route—a traditional destination for Europe-bound Asian cargo—is 11,432 miles long (35 to 40 days). Compare it to 8,395 miles (or 23 to 27 days) of the Shanghai-Novorossiysk route. Multiple online sources quoted CREDO TRANS experts as stating that the Shanghai-St. Petersburg route costs $1,400 to $1,800 per TEU and $2,070 to $2,200 per FEU. In contrast, the Shanghai-Novorossiysk route charges $1,860 to $2,100 per TEU and $2,535 to $2,700 per FEU. Despite being generally more expensive, the Shanghai-Novorossiysk route may be of interest to shippers specializing in high-priced cargo delivery, including perishable cargo. The Novorossiysk route may appeal to shippers whose markets are in Southern Europe, while St. Petersburg is better suited to freight destined for the Scandinavian countries and Northern Europe.

Another advantage of the NCSP is that Tsemes Bay does not freeze during winter. There is, however, a negative regional weather factor — hurricane winds, which affect the port seasonally.

One more advantage of the NCSP is that post-expansion, the port will have the most high-tech and automated terminals in Russia.

Prices, Fees, and Tariffs at the Port of Novorossiysk

The Ministry of Transport of Russia approves, reviews, and updates the list of harbor fees, dues, and tariffs in the seaports of Russia, including the NCSP.

Several factors determine the freight rates charged by freight forwarders at the NCSP, including the total size of products, shipping distance, urgency, shipment classification, and temperature requirements.

The latest advancements in information technology and software make it easier than ever to comprehend the rates and the whole freight transportation and value chain.

To understand better the prices at the NCSP, see below a snapshot of the lowest rates charged for shipping 20 ft FCL containers to/from Novorossiysk as of September 2021.

Another Icon-of-the-Seas-Style Megaship? Make That 3 More.

Royal Caribbean and other companies are aggressively building over-the-top ships. “Today’s cruisezillas make the Titanic look like a small fishing boat,” noted one sustainability specialist.

A huge cruise ship is docked in a calm bay. The name of the ship, "Icon of the Seas," appears on the side of the multi-deck ship, which has colorful water slides and other amenities atop it.

By Ceylan Yeğinsu

The Icon of the Seas, the world’s largest cruise ship, drew as much criticism as excitement when Royal Caribbean launched it earlier this year, but the ship has been a hit among cruise goers. Now the cruise line is adding to its fleet of megaships.

The company already has two Icon Class ships on order — Star of the Seas, which will be launched in 2025, and a third ship that has not yet been named but will be delivered in 2026. It now has plans to order a fourth ship, set for a 2027 launch, with options for a fifth and sixth. The new ships build on the market response to Icon of the Seas, said Jason Liberty, president and chief executive of Royal Caribbean Group, announcing the agreement to build the new ships.

“Since its debut, Icon has exceeded our expectations in both guest satisfaction and financial performance,” Mr. Liberty said in a statement on Tuesday.

The 250,800-ton ship, which can carry nearly 8,000 people, has eight “neighborhoods” packed with amenities that include a 55-foot waterfall, six water slides and more than 40 restaurants, bars and entertainment venues.

Royal Caribbean’s announcement comes as the cruise industry reports record demand, attracting new customers with attractively priced packages that often include food, beverages and activities. In 2023, cruise travel exceeded 2019’s 29.7 million passengers by some two million, with 31.7 million passengers. This year, that number is expected to reach 34.7 million, according to Cruise Lines International Association, the industry’s trade group.

Responding to the demand, Royal Caribbean launched four new ships this year and has seven more on order. Other major cruise lines, like Carnival, Norwegian and MSC, are also launching next-generation vessels through 2027. The trend has drawn criticism from environmental groups, who warn that the number and scale of the ships undermine the industry’s commitment to a more sustainable future.

The world’s largest cruise ships are now twice as big as they were in 2000, according to a report by Transport and Environment , a Brussels-based advocacy group for clean transport and energy. If vessels continue to grow at their current rate, the biggest ships in 2025 will be eight times larger than the Titanic, with a capacity to carry nearly 11,000 passengers, the report found.

“Today’s cruisezillas make the Titanic look like a small fishing boat. How much bigger can these giants get?” said Inesa Ulichina, the sustainable shipping officer at Transport and Environment. “The cruise business is the fastest growing tourism sector and its emissions are quickly getting out of control.”

Based on the current fleets of its member lines, CLIA said, there is a strong balance of cruise ship sizes. Many cruise lines argue that their larger vessels are being built more efficiently in line with their sustainability goals, with features to make them compatible with cleaner fuel sources like methanol.

The Icon of the Seas has several features designed to minimize the ship’s carbon footprint, including a waste management system that converts onboard waste into energy and an advanced purification system that is designed to treat all wastewater onboard.

“Achieving net zero is not something any one company can do alone,” Mr. Liberty said, speaking last month at a Decarbonization Summit hosted by Royal Caribbean Group and the not-for-profit Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping. “It requires collective problem solving, creative thinking, and a willingness to have tough conversations.”

  • Boating abroad

You must log in to your personal MyRYA account to apply or renew an ICC.

If you’re looking to operate a pleasure craft or hire a boat outside the UK and need to evidence your competence, then the UK International Certificate for Operators of Pleasure Craft (the ICC) issued by the RYA, may be useful.

What is the ICC?

The ICC is intended to provide evidence of competence when requested by officials in a country you are visiting (i.e. a country you are not a citizen or a resident of).

It’s an assurance from one government to another that the certificate holder is sufficiently competent to be operating a pleasure craft, despite not holding the visited country’s certificate.

Is the ICC for me?

When you visit another country, in most circumstances (in accordance with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea) you can be required to comply with the maritime legislation of the visited country (the Coastal State) in addition to that of your vessel’s country of registration.

To know whether the ICC is the right document for your circumstances you need to consider the applicable legislation.

Find out more about applicable legislation and flag and coastal states .

What is Resolution No. 40 and why is it important?

The ICC was developed under the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Inland Transport Committee Working Party on Inland Water Transport Resolution No. 40, the UK Government has accepted Resolution No. 40 and has authorised the RYA to issue a UK ICC on its behalf.

Resolution No. 40 details how and to who the ICC may be issued, the syllabus requirements and the layout of the certificate. The Resolution also lists the countries which have notified the UNECE Secretariat that they have accepted the resolution.

Find out more about ICC Resolution No. 40

your ICC questions answered

Eligibility - nationality based criteria

I’m British. Can I get a UK ICC from the RYA?

Yes. You’ll need to provide a copy of a document or a combination of documents with your ICC application, which allow the RYA to verify your nationality. This will usually be a copy of your passport.

Find out more

I’m a citizen of a country that has accepted Resolution 40. Can the RYA issue me with an ICC?

The RYA will only issue you with an ICC if you are resident in the UK.

I’m a citizen of a country, other than the UK, that has not accepted Resolution 40. Can the RYA issue me with an ICC?

The RYA can issue you with an ICC. However, if the country you are a national of accepts Resolution No. 40 in the future you will not be able to amend or renew your ICC. You must return the certificate to the RYA and you will not be entitled to any refund. You may wish to find out if the country you are citizen of intends to accept the ICC in the future.

Eligibility - competence based criteria

I’ve been boating for a long time but have never taken any formal courses. Can I get a UK ICC issued by the RYA?

Applicants for the UK ICC issued by the RYA, who do not hold an eligible certificate but already have the required level of competence can take ICC assessments to demonstrate their competence for each of the categories they would like to have validated on their ICC.

Read our detailed information on how to evidence your boating competence for the issue of a UK ICC.

I only have a shorebased course completion certificate, I didn’t take a practical course. Can I still apply for a UK ICC from the RYA?

To be issued with a UK ICC by the RYA you must provide evidence of your competence for both the type of vessel categories you would like to be validated on your certificate and the coastal waters and / or inland waters category.

An RYA Day Skipper Shorebased or higher Course Completion Certificate can be used to validate the coastal waters category only. A shorebased certificate on its own is not sufficient. You must also provide evidence of your competence for at least one of the type of vessel categories.

Can I covert non-RYA qualifications into an ICC?

In general, non RYA certificates cannot be used to evidence your competence for the issue of a UK ICC by the RYA. Some certificates issued for or on behalf of the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) can be used in an ICC application as evidence of competence.

Application process for UK ICC

Do I need to provide a photograph?

Yes, a current passport sized head and shoulders photo of the certificate holder is printed on the ICC. A suitable photo must be submitted with your application.

Do I need to be an RYA member to apply for my ICC?

No, you are not required to be a member of the RYA. However, the ICC application is free for RYA members.

Which countries accept the ICC?

Please refer to our information on where might the ICC be accepted.

Can I renew my ICC if it has expired?

Yes, expired certificates, issued on or after 1 April 1999 can be renewed. Certificates issued prior to 1st April 1999 were not issued in accordance with Resolution No. 40 and cannot be renewed.

Your new certificate will be issued with the same categories validated as your existing certificate.

Should you require any further categories validated you will need to pass the appropriate ICC assessment or provide the necessary documentary evidence of competence.

Apply now for your ICC renewal

Can I renew early?

Yes. If you renew your ICC no more than three months before the certificate expires, the new certificate will have a validity of 5 years from the date the previous ICC would have expired. You can renew your ICC earlier than that, but it will only be valid for 5 years from the date of issue.

How do I apply for a replacement ICC?

If your ICC is still current and you require a replacement then you will be required to complete the ICC application form and submit as a replacement request.

The replacement is free of charge to current members or the cost for non-members can be found on the form. The expiry date will remain the same.

This update is free of charge to current members or the cost for non-members can be found on the form. The expiry date will remain the same.

I have Power Yes on my Certificate, what does this mean?

Sometimes an ICC is issued with the validity for Power restricted to vessels up to 10m in length.

Where the applicant has demonstrated that they are competent to drive a larger powerboat, motor cruiser or barge, the 10m restriction is lifted and the ICC says Power - Yes.

What vessels that ICC is valid for is determined by the legislation of the flag and coastal states.

Rare whale species observed during recent Antarctic expedition

by Wageningen University

Rare whale species observed during recent Antarctic expedition

Research by Wageningen Marine Research and partners on the relationship between sea ice and the Southern Ocean food web investigates various components of that food web, including the so-called "top predators," or seabirds and marine mammals. To map their numbers and distribution, observers count these animals during Antarctic expeditions. During the latest expedition, on board the German icebreaker Polarstern in the southern autumn of 2022, an unusual species of whale was observed: the Arnoux's beaked whale.

During the expeditions, counts were carried out in two ways. Outside, on the roof of the bridge of Polarstern, there are two wooden observation posts where Bram Feij of the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ) and Susanne Kühn of Wageningen Marine Research can stand somewhat heated and sheltered from the wind.

From here, they count the number of birds and marine mammals they encounter while sailing to estimate how many animals live in the area. When the ship is stationary, additional counts are carried out using a helicopter. During the 2022 expedition , groups of Arnoux's beaked whales were observed three times during helicopter flights. During eleven previous Polarstern expeditions in the Southern Ocean, conducted between 1988 and 2018, this species was never seen.

The findings are published in the journal Marine Mammal Science .

Unknown species

Because the Arnoux's beaked whale is rarely observed, little is known about this species. Therefore, the researchers felt it was important to publish their observations. To put the findings in context, they compiled an overview of all sightings of this species that they could find and verify in literature, on the internet and with fellow researchers.

During this search, wonderful old slides and videos from the 1980s and 1990s also came to light, made by colleagues at Wageningen Marine Research and the Alfred Wegener Institute in Germany. Combined with data from databases of international research programs focused on whales, a total of 108 sightings were found, accounting for 1,125 Arnoux's beaked whales.

Rare whale species observed during recent Antarctic expedition

New insights into distribution

The Southern Ocean is often difficult to navigate due to its sea-ice cover, especially outside the summer months. Moreover, the Arnoux's beaked whale makes long, deep dives, so it does not often appear on the surface of the water. This complicates obtaining a complete picture of its distribution and habitat. Nevertheless, the collection of all documented sightings has provided new insights.

It was assumed that the Arnoux's beaked whale lives mainly in the deep parts of the oceans in the southern hemisphere, but the collected observations show that most individuals are actually seen in relatively shallow water, closer to shore. In addition, the results suggest an association with sea ice, possibly related to food or protection. There are also observations throughout the year, suggesting that the species does not migrate en masse to ice-free northern waters in winter.

The bird and mammal counts during the 2022 expedition were part of the EWOS ("Eastern Weddell Sea Observation System") pilot program. The aim of EWOS is to investigate how to best monitor the functioning of the Antarctic ecosystem in the Weddell Sea over a longer period of time and to standardize monitoring methods. Such research is important in establishing a Marine Protected Area (MPA) for the Weddell Sea.
