Why the Yachting Industry is Booming: Royal Yacht International

In the last year, the covid-19 pandemic has demonstrated irrevocable changes in the economy, some for the better, others for worse. However, one industry that saw a massive uptick in sales and activity was the yachting industry. In a class of its own, catering to the elite and one percent, the yacht market is the strongest it’s been in years. The market climbed 45% in the first three months of 2021 compared to the same period the previous year, with brokerage sales in March alone rising 152%, sustained by a wave of first-time buyers.

As yachting has been able to provide a safe and protected bubble, if you will, many looking to travel in style and luxury are opting for private yacht charter in order to comfortably control their environment. One up-and-coming company that is leading the industry with unprecedented success in the last few months is Tommaso Chiabra’s Royal Yacht International.

If you’re in the market for a yacht, whether to charter or to purchase, chances are you’ve heard of Royal Yacht International. With global access to a vast fleet of over 1,400 charter yachts and 6,000 yachts for sale ranging from 70 feet long to 500 feet long, Chiabra’s Royal Yacht International was recently recognized as an industry disruptor just earlier this year after yielding over €100 million in the first quarter of 2021. Moreover, RYI is the current record holder for the quickest sales average, from point of listing on the market to the final sale. Catering to a portfolio of wealthy professionals and individuals, Royal Yacht International’s success is a clear indicator of how the stock market has flourished in the last year. And while 2020 undoubtedly impacted the economy, the struggles and reality of the year also influenced consumer values. In fact, now more than ever, wealthy consumers are placing an emphasis on quality of life, valuing their time and how they spend it. In turn, many have selected yachting as their preferred method of travel.

Royal Yacht International are experts in experiences, the first yacht brokerage to organise luxury adventures instead of a standard yacht charter. Thanks to their broad knowledge of the best cruising areas, from perusing the glacial coastlines of Antarctica in search of an abundance of marine and wildlife, to sailing between the bubbling live volcanoes within the Aeolian Islands. The destination management team at RYI are in a class of their own, dedicated to researching and creating bespoke itineraries for their clients onboard their yachts around the world. Whether it's soaking up the Mediterranean Summer sun in Capri whilst sipping on local Limoncello, scuba diving in the colourful depths of the Maldives or exploring the untouched sandy beaches of French Polynesia. Combine silver-star service with new experiences, enjoy fun sea and shoreside activities by adding a plethora of water toys to your yacht, this is paving the way forward to modern day yacht charter and the opportunities are infinite.

Having established the business just over 10 years ago, Chiabra has since grown Royal Yacht International into a global business with its headquarters in Monaco and offices all over the world, including Florida, Canada, St Barths, London, Spain, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and more. Royal Yacht International were the first yacht brokerage to accept crypto currency as a form of payment for their luxury yacht services, but what really sets Royal Yacht apart from its competition is their deep network of accessibility to an elite selection of vessels, whether for charter or sale. Having grown the business to an international level, Royal Yacht International continues to share the niche world of the yachting lifestyle, with a large stake in the game, as one of the most well-known and respected in the industry.

What will the new royal yacht look like?

When the Royal Yacht Britannia was decommissioned in 1997 as a cost-cutting measure by the British government, not everyone was ready to say farewell. Prime Minister Boris Johnson has now confirmed that a new royal yacht will be operational by 2026, with design plans due to be released around the time of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee . According to Johnson, the royal yacht will sail around the world hosting trade negotiations as part of Britain's post-Brexit plans – but what will it look like? We pitched the idea to six teams of designers...

Project Albion

Team members : Steve Gresham, Fiona Diamond, Mike Fisher, Mike Brandy, Jarkko Jamsen and James Kandsch

The design : Project Albion is a 140 metre, three-masted sailing yacht with telescopic wing sails that allow the rig to concertina into itself when at anchor or cruising under power. High-profile guests stepping aboard can make use of its two helidecks: one retractable landing pad on the starboard side that doubles as an exhibition space, and another on the bow with a helicopter hangar beneath. Alternatively, there's a hydrogen-powered royal limousine tender named Lillibet (the Queen’s familial nickname)

Star features : At the heart of the yacht sits a grand, double-height ballroom for royal gatherings. Two-storey structural glass windows on either side offer sweeping sea views –  the perfect backdrop to any royal occasion.

“Project Albion is a modern, forward-thinking sailing yacht, incorporating green features and technology, whilst maintaining a sense of grandeur and tradition”  – Fiona Diamond

Stateship Britannia

Team members : Tim Gosling, Luiz de Basto, Bart de Haan, Jerry Lakeman, Luca Scarsella

The design : The Stateship Britannia is a striking 202 metre motor yacht designed to function as a floating embassy. Split into three spaces – public, shared and private – royal yacht is able to host large-scale, international events but also serves as a private residence for royals on board. There’s a helicopter hangar that converts into an emergency hospital, which in light of recent events won't go amiss, while the portholes are deliberately positioned to read ‘2020’ in morse code, marking the year as the beginning of a new era for the royal family.

Star features : A Union Jack-printed glass funnel houses wind turbines with vertical rotors that assist the yacht’s hydrogen propulsion system.

“We want a yacht that stands out and cannot be confused with any other multi-million pound boat. It’s something different”  – Luiz de Basto

Royal Red Diamond

Team members : Frank Neubelt, Theodoros Fotiadis, Guido de Groot, Enrique Tintore, Carl Sorenson

The design : A seven-deck modern-classic with a conservative design that reflects the tradition and values of the royal family. Measuring 140 metres, Royal Red Diamond features a Neptune lounge, two helipads, a duplex royal stateroom and a swimming pool that sits between the two funnels. The motor yacht will be powered by twin Rolls Royce 5,500hp diesel-electric engines.

Star feature : A grand atrium with an imperial staircase sits aft, enclosed by structural glass, and doubles as a gallery and exhibition space.

“It’s a seven-deck world cruiser with a modern-classic style to reflect the conservative ethos of the royal house”  – Frank Neubelt

Team members : Daniel Nerhagen, Guglielmo Carrozzo, Willem Jan Kuipers, Claudio Zimarino

The design : Royal Lion takes its inspiration from the famous Cutty Sark clipper, a merchant sailing ship that used to bring tea back to Britain from China in the 1800s – with a few upgrades of course. A 180 metre sailing yacht requires some serious sail power, which comes in the form of 24 solar sails housed in four DynaRig masts, allowing the royal yacht to reach 17 to 18 knots.

Star features : A platform that opens from the transom can be used as a touch-and-go helipad for royal visits and also doubles as a party platform for state functions and social occasions.

“Royal Lion can store solar energy through the sails into high capacity batteries, which can be used for the hotel load or for manoeuvrability when coming in to port”  – Claudio Zimarino

Britannia As A Rule

Team members : Michele Dragoni, Bart Bouwhuis, Wayne Parker, Aristotelis Betsis, Kriss Hogg

The design : This modern eco-yacht is designed to be carbon neutral for a new era of eco-savvy royals. Among its credentials are solar panels, turbine tubes and a nuclear power plant by Rolls Royce. In their downtime, the royal family can make use of the yacht's electric Jet Skis, electric helicopter and there's even an electric Land Rover Defender for trips ashore. Other highlights include a dedicated "palace deck" with a royal stateroom and a helicopter hangar on the foredeck.

Star features : For those boarding the yacht via the aft, sliding glass doors on the transom open to reveal one large indoor-outdoor exhibition space.

“It’s a floating showcase of all that’s great about Great Britain”  – Bart Bouwhuis

Project Winston

Team members : Andrew Winch, Gabriel Gabie, Jenny Skoog, Sally Storey, Alejandro Hahn

The design : With the Union Jack plastered across three DynaRig masts, there’s no confusion as to which family this royal yacht belongs to. Project Winston takes its design cues from three great British symbols: the hull is inspired by an Aston Martin, the upper deck by a crown, and the sails by the Union Jack. Elsewhere, sitting proudly on the bow is a figurehead of a British bulldog, while a bejewelled royal balcony is the perfect spot from which to wave-off the evening's guests.

Star features : The sails feature an integrated LED system that showcases the Union Jack on one side and act as a virtual billboard on the other to promote the best of Britain wherever it goes.

“Greta Thunberg has already agreed to come on board”  – Jenny Skoog

Did Bayesian superyacht’s 237ft mast cause it to sink?

B ayesian’s 237ft metal mast may have played a part in the sinking of the superyacht off the coast of Sicily , experts have suggested.

The yacht, named after the mathematical theory Mike Lynch used to make his millions in the tech industry, foundered in the small hours of Monday morning.

Key among potential reasons for the loss of the vessel will be its most striking feature – the aluminium mast.

Four British personnel from the Marine Accident Investigation Branch are on their way to Palermo to carry out a preliminary assessment.

There are also theories that hot overnight temperatures of 27C (80C) could have prompted passengers to leave portholes and windows open – hastening the sinking when the high winds hit.

Launched in 2008 by Perini Navi, Bayesian is one of the 50 largest sailing yachts in the world and her mammoth mast supported a total sail area of almost 32,000 sq ft.

Bayesian had the tallest aluminium mast in the world when it first took to the seas under her former name Salute. The record was overtaken last year when Jeff Bezos, the Amazon billionaire launched his yacht, Koru.

Koru’s masts stretch to 278ft tall according to Boat International magazine.

Tom Sharpe, a former Royal Navy commander and warship captain, said initial reports from survivors and witnesses suggested “that the weather was sufficiently violent to cause her to capsize at anchor”.

Weather reports from Palermo airport, 12 miles west of the yacht, suggest that at about 4am, winds switched from a gentle south-westerly breeze to gusts of 40mph, with temperatures dropping.

Local newspapers have described the weather as a tornado and a waterspout, which is a tornado above water.

The pressure of high winds on the mast could have helped tip the boat over in rough seas, experts have suggested.

Mr Sharpe said capsizing seemed “unlikely” to him given the Bayesian’s size “and that boats like that are designed to survive poor weather – unless something failed at the same time like a valve that let water in and made the whole boat unstable”.

He said it was more likely that the Bayesian had “dragged anchor”. Anchors are designed to lodge on rocks on the seabed, but if the seabed is too soft, or weather is so bad that the anchor is dislodged, then a boat can drag its anchor and drift.

If a boat drifts into an obstruction such as a rock or another boat, this can damage the boat by tearing a hole in its side leading to sinking, Mr Sharpe suggested.

The sea bed off Porticello, the Silician harbour nearest to where Bayesian was moored for the night, consists of a mixture of rocky and muddy areas, according to nautical charts reviewed by The Telegraph.

This means the yacht could have dragged anchor if it had been lowered into a soft, muddy patch of seabed.

A captain of another boat anchored nearby said his vessel was hit by abnormally strong winds on Monday morning.

Karsten Borner said the Sir Robert BP was battered by strong gusts in the early hours of the morning but he managed to stabilise the vessel while anchored by using the engine.

He said as they were doing this, they noticed the Bayesian nearby and manoeuvred to avoid hitting it.

“We managed to keep the ship in position, and after the storm was over, we noticed that the ship behind us was gone,” said Capt Borner.

Mr Sharpe said: “From a seamanship point of view, the other boat (Sir Robert BP) coming up on her main engines and using those to keep position around [her own] anchor is what you should do. Yacht anchors are often not that robust and that is the best way to avoid putting too much strain on it and/or dragging.”

An alternative theory is that the weight of the mast led the Bayesian to capsize.

A yacht industry source told The Times that the vessel sank after the weight of her mast took the hull beyond its “down-flooding angle” – the point at which a boat cannot right itself after swinging at a steep angle – meaning water rushed over the sides into the interior.

“The wind toppled the mast, which fell over the side, causing the boat to heel over and take on water, capsize and sink very quickly,” the source said.

This can occur whether the mast snapped off or not.

Sam Jefferson, editor of Sailing Today, told The Telegraph: “She has a very tall, aluminium mast – I believe it is the second tallest aluminium mast in the world – and that would not have helped.

“Many yachts with big masts have carbon masts instead of aluminium as these save on weight and improve stability and performance.

“Stability was obviously the problem in the extremely strong winds she was experiencing and I’d assume the boat was pinned on its side and could not right before it filled up with water.”

Another superyacht expert who asked not to be named told The Telegraph that the mast could have pulled the Bayesian over into capsizing, although he expressed some scepticism, saying sailing yachts are designed to prevent that from happening.

He said the anchor-dragging theory was also a plausible explanation for why the Bayesian sank.

Typically, crews try to anchor in safe spots that are sheltered away from the wind, they said.

The Bayesian was moored just off Porticello, a few miles east of Palermo. Prevailing winds from the north-east may have robbed the vessel of the shelter offered by the Sicilian coast, which lay to the west.

Dr Lynch was reportedly aboard the vessel. His wife, Angela Bacares, is among those rescued but six others, including four Britons, are still missing.

One person, reportedly the yacht’s chef, died in the incident and his body was recovered by rescuers.

The Bayesian’s last refit was in 2020.

The vessel was listed for rent for up to €195,000 (£166,000) a week, according to online charter websites.

The interior featured six cabins – one master, three doubles and two twin rooms – for up to a dozen guests, with the crew occupying separate quarters.

Fitted out in a Japanese style, the interior was styled by the Remi Tessler design house.

Under her former name Salute, the yacht won the Best Exterior prize at the World Superyacht Awards in 2009, and the Best Interior at the International Superyacht Society Awards in 2008.

A coastguard statement issued on Monday morning said the missing passengers were of “British, American and Canadian nationality”.

Camper & Nicholsons, managers of the Bayesian, confirmed the vessel sank at about 4.30am following “severe weather”.

The Italian Coast Guard is leading search and rescue operations, and said on Monday it had safely recovered 15 individuals.

Five bodies retrieved from tech tycoon Mike Lynch’s sunken yacht in Sicily

Questions abound about what caused the superyacht to sink so quickly when a nearby sailboat was largely spared.

Divers searching the wreck of a superyacht that sank off Sicily have found the bodies of five passengers and are searching for one more as questions intensify about why the vessel sank so quickly when a nearby sailboat remained largely unscathed.

Rescue crews unloaded three body bags from rescue vessels that pulled into port at Porticello on Wednesday.

Salvatore Cocina, head of the Sicily civil protection agency, said two other bodies had also been found in the wreckage.

The bodies of British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah were among those found inside one of the vessel’s cabins between two mattresses, The Telegraph reported.

The Bayesian, a 56-metre (184-foot) British-flagged yacht, went down in a storm early on Monday as it was moored about a kilometre (a half-mile) offshore. Civil protection officials said they believed the ship was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout, and sank quickly.

Fifteen people escaped in a lifeboat and were rescued by a nearby sailboat. One body was recovered on Monday – that of the yacht’s Antigua-born chef, Recaldo Thomas.

Lynch, 59, was one of the United Kingdom’s best-known tech entrepreneurs and had invited friends to join him on the yacht to celebrate his recent acquittal in a fraud trial in the United States.

Besides Lynch and his daughter, the other people unaccounted for after the disaster were Judy and Jonathan Bloomer, a non-executive chair of Morgan Stanley International; and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife, Neda Morvillo.

The yacht remains lying sideways on the seabed a, 50 metres (164 feet) underwater – a depth that required special precautions that complicated the recovery work. Divers are only able to stay in the vessel for 8-10 minutes before having to resurface.

Investigators from the Termini Imerese Public Prosecutor’s Office were acquiring evidence for their criminal investigation, which they opened immediately after the tragedy, even though no formal suspects have been publicly identified.

Questions abound about what caused the superyacht, which was built in 2008 by Italian shipyard Perini Navi, to sink so quickly, when the nearby Sir Robert Baden Powell sailboat was largely spared and managed to rescue the 15 survivors.

Experts want to know about the position of the keel, which on a large sailboat such as the Bayesian might have been retractable, to allow it to enter shallower ports, or if a freak waterspout struck the vessel and simply pushed it onto its side.

“There’s a lot of uncertainty as to whether it had a lifting keel and whether it might have been up,” said Jean-Baptiste Souppez, a fellow of the Royal Institute of Naval Architects and the editor of the Journal of Sailing Technology.

“But if it had, then that would reduce the amount of stability that the vessel had, and therefore made it easier for it to roll over on its side,” he said in an interview.

Yachts such as the Bayesian are also required to have watertight, sub-compartments that are specifically designed to prevent a rapid, catastrophic sinking even when some parts fill with water.

“So for the vessel to sink, especially this fast, you are really looking at taking water on board very quickly, but also in a number of locations along the length of the vessel, which again indicates that it might have been rolled over on its side,” Souppez said.

Body of British businessman Mike Lynch recovered from deadly Italian yacht sinking

Yacht manufacturer's ceo says 'indescribable, unreasonable' errors led to deadly tragedy.

The Italian Coast Guard said Thursday the body of British tech magnate Mike Lynch is among those recovered off the coast of Sicily from the wreckage of a superyacht whose builders had called it unsinkable.

One woman remains missing. She has not been identified, but Hannah Lynch, Lynch's 18-year-old daughter, remains  unaccounted for.  The family had been celebrating his recent acquittal on fraud charges with the people who defended him at trial in the United States.

Five others were recovered by rescue crews following Monday's tragedy.

Sicily superyacht rescue: What divers are up against | About That

Divers have struggled to find the bodies.

"It's very difficult to move inside the wreckage. Moving just one metre can take up to 24 hours," said Luca Cari, spokesperson for the fire rescue service.

  • CBC Explains How did the superyacht Bayesian sink? Experts say weather was just one factor
  • 5 bodies found by divers in Sicily yacht search, 1 person still unaccounted for

Hannah Lynch, the businessman's 18-year-old daughter, is among the boat occupants rescue teams were searching for this week, along with Judy and Jonathan Bloomer and Chris and Neda Morvillo.

Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, was among those who managed to get to safety, while the body of the onboard chef, Recaldo Thomas, was found near the wreck hours after the disaster.

Thomas was a native of Antigua but was raised in Calgary, according to Antiguan reports.

Questions about capsize remain

Fifteen of the 22 people aboard survived, including a mother who reported holding her one-year-old baby over the waves to save her.

They were rescued by the sailboat Sir Robert Baden Powell. The sailboat's captain, Karsten Borner, said he had remained anchored with his engines running to try to maintain the ship's position as the storm rolled in.

"Another possibility is to heave anchor before the storm and to run downwind at open sea," Borner said in a text message.

But he said that might not have been possible for the Bayesian, given its 75-metre-tall mast.

"If there was a stability problem, caused by the extremely tall mast, it would not have been better at open sea," he said.

Criminal investigation underway

Investigators from Termini Imerese Public Prosecutor's Office were collecting evidence for a criminal investigation, which they opened immediately after the tragedy despite no formal suspects having been publicly identified.

The chief executive of The Italian Sea Group, which owns the Bayesian's manufacturer, told AP in an interview on Thursday that superyachts like these are "designed to be unsinkable."

"And it is unsinkable not only because it is designed in this way, but also because it is a sailing ship and sailing ships are the safest ever," CEO Giovanni Costantino said.

Several people are shown on what appears to be a dock, near a seacraft.

Costantino added that "obviously they must not hit the rocks violently, discarding the hull, and they must not take in water," suggesting the second possibility was the most likely in this case.

Costantino also noted that sailing ships require "a greater competence" to be guided compared with motor boats. In a separate interview with Reuters, he said a series of "indescribable, unreasonable errors" by the crew led to the shipwreck.

Yachts like the Bayesian are required to have watertight compartments that are specifically designed to prevent a rapid, catastrophic sinking even when some parts fill with water.

Lynch, 59, is the only person confirmed dead; the other bodies have not been formally identified by the Italian coast guard.

The Royal Academy of Engineering, where Lynch was a Fellow, said it was "deeply saddened" to learn of his death and that he played an "active role" as a mentor and donor.

Three boats are seen patrolling a large body of water.

Lynch founded Autonomy, a software maker, in 1996. He later founded Invoke Capital, a venture capital firm that was a founding investor of British cybersecurity company Darktrace, as well as Luminance, an artificial intelligence platform for the legal industry.

Lynch sold Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion in 2011. But the deal quickly turned into an albatross for him after he was accused of cooking the books to make the sale and then fired by HP.

Lynch testified this year while facing fraud charges at trial in California in connection with the HP deal. Although he avoided the possibility of a prison sentence with a subsequent acquittal, Lynch still faced a potentially costly civil case in London.

The family of Jonathan Bloomer and his wife Judy have described them as ‘incredible people and an inspiration to many’ following their deaths on the Bayesian yacht.

The Morgan Stanley International bank chairman and his wife had joined close friend Mike Lynch on board to celebrate the British tech magnate’s acquittal in a fraud trial in the United States.

Follow our live coverage of the search and rescue operation in Italy

Their bodies were among five recovered after the £30 million vessel sank during a storm off the coast of Sicily early on Monday morning. Mr Lynch’s daughter Hannah is still missing.

In a statement, Mr and Mrs Bloomer’s children said: ‘We are grieving for our loved ones and all of those affected by the tragedy.

‘We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the emergency services and everyone who helped tirelessly in this rescue operation.

‘Our parents were incredible people and an inspiration to many, but first and foremost they were focused on and loved their family and spending time with their new grandchildren.

‘Together for five decades, our only comfort is that they are still together now.

‘This is an unimaginable grief to shoulder. Our only ask is that our family’s privacy is respected at this time.’

Family and friends of Mr Lynch said they were all ‘hoping for a miracle’, but have been left ‘deeply saddened’ after Italian authorities said they had recovered his body yesterday.

Friend Brent Hoberman said his death is ‘unbelievably tragic’, describing Mr Lynch as an ‘inspiring figure’ in the tech community who should be remembered for his achievements.

‘We were all hoping for a miracle – we knew it was unlikely but you still hold out hope,’ he told Sky News.

‘It’s just so unbelievably tragic for him to go through what he went through over the last 12 years, defending his name and not really living a full life, to now for his death to be confirmed is obviously incredibly sad.’

Neighbour Ruth Leigh said despite the couple being ‘wealthy, influential people’ they ‘never put any airs or graces on’ in the 15 years she knew them.

‘They’d always take the trouble to remember your name and ask after your partner or children. They didn’t have to do that. We had a great deal of respect for them,’ she told Sky News.

‘They touched a lot of people. They were well thought of, kind, generous, hospitable people.’

The Royal Academy of Engineering said: ‘The trustee board, fellows and staff of the Royal Academy of Engineering are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Mike Lynch, and send our profound condolences to his family.

‘Mike became a fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2008 and we have fond memories of the active role he played in the past as a mentor, donor and former council member.

‘He was also one of the inaugural members on the enterprise committee.

‘Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time’

The Italian Coastguard has not ruled out the possibility that those missing may still be alive, with experts speculating air pockets could have formed as the yacht sank. Italian authorities said the bodies of four other passengers including Morgan Stanley International bank chairperson Jonathan Bloomer, his wife, Judy Bloomer, Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo, and his wife, Neda Morvillo were also recovered from the scene.

Hannah Lynch, Mr Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter is still missing.A sixth body is yet to be recovered from the wreckage.

Mr Bloomer, who is also the former honorary treasurer of the children’s charity the NSPCC, was described as ‘a very kind individual’.

Speaking about the Morgan Stanley International bank chairperson and his wife Judy, chair of the NSPCC Neil Berkett said: ‘We are deeply saddened that the deaths of Jonathan Bloomer and his wife Judy have been confirmed after the yacht they were on tragically sank off the coast of Sicily.

A boat carrying a dive team heads out to the site of the Bayesian on the fourth day of the search

‘Jonathan and Judy were great supporters of the NSPCC over many years, with Jonathan joining our board of trustees in 2008 and serving as the honorary treasurer from 2009 to 2016.

‘We remember Jonathan from his time with us as a very kind individual with a great sense of humour and Judy as formidable and passionate.

‘We are so grateful for everything they did for children and the NSPCC and our thoughts are with their family, friends and colleagues at this desperately sad time.’

The 184ft yacht was struck by a freak event known as a waterspout – a tornado over water – as it moored overnight off Porticello, a fishing village 10 miles east of Palermo.

A total of 22 passengers were onboard the yacht and 15 were saved.

Recaldo Thomas, the yacht’s chef, was confirmed as the first person who had died on Tuesday.

Five of the bodies were found yesterday when rescue teams finally managed to access the ship’s sleeping cabin after being hampered by debris blocking their access.

Mr Lynch was known for his business Autonomy, which he sold to Hewlett-Packard for millions in 2011, and his venture capitalist firm Invoke Capital.

Born in Ilford, east London, to Irish parents, he graduated with a PhD from the University of Cambridge. Mr Lynch was married to Angela Bacares, with whom he shares two daughters.

Ms Bacares, 57, survived the disaster but was left using a wheelchair due to the injuries she suffered when the yacht sank.

Mr Lynch has a reported net worth valued at around £852 million, according to the Independent.

His business ventures led him to once be dubbed ‘Britain’s Bill Gates’ but also landed him in legal trouble.

Autonomy’s sale was wrapped in fraud claims, and he faced civil action in the UK before being extradited to the United States to face criminal charges.

In his first interview after being cleared, Mr Lynch told The Sunday Times: ‘Now you have a second life. The question is, what do you want to do with it?’

His friend, former cabinet minister Lord Debden, said the entrepreneur was at the ‘beginning of a new life’.

Speaking to Times Radio before Mr Lynch’s body was recovered, he said: ‘He came back to be ready to start again. He made such a contribution to Britain. His companies have put British IT in the forefront, and he was going to do it again, and we pray that he can do it again.’

Hannah had recently finished her A-Levels and was bound for Oxford University. She was due to start studying English at Trinity College later this year.

Royal Caribbean reveals details about second Icon Class ship, Star of the Seas

Portrait of Nathan Diller

The world’s biggest cruise ship is about to get a sibling.

Royal Caribbean International revealed new details Tuesday about its second Icon Class vessel, Star of the Seas. The ship will set sail from Florida’s Port Canaveral near Orlando in August 2025.

“Us really bringing the world's best family vacation to one of the world's best family markets felt like a natural synergy,” Jay Schneider, chief product innovation officer and senior vice president for the line's parent company, Royal Caribbean Group , told USA TODAY.

The ship’s onboard offerings will build on what has resonated with guests on Icon of the Seas since it debuted in January – with some twists.

“One thing about this class is the class is coming out very fast, and it doesn't give you a whole lot of time to adjust,” Schneider said. “And so we wanted to learn as much as we could about what is successful on Icon as we kind of look ahead to Star.”

Where will Star of the Seas sail?

The 5,610-guest ship will operate seven-night Caribbean cruises, including destinations like Basseterre, St. Kitts and Nevis, Cozumel in Mexico and San Juan, Puerto Rico. Every cruise will also stop at the Royal Caribbean’s Bahamas private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay .

What can passengers expect?

The ship, a sister vessel to Icon, will include many of its familiar spaces, from the Category 6 water park to the enclosed glass-and-steel AquaDome and the adults-only Hideaway pool and lounge area. There will also be more than 40 dining and beverage options.

For comparison, Star – like Icon – will have 20 decks and measure 1,196 feet long. Royal Caribbean's newest Oasis Class ship, Utopia of the Seas , has 18 decks and measures 1,188 feet.

But Star will feature new takes on some features that launched on Icon. Empire Supper Club, an intimate space serving multicourse meals with live entertainment, will be reimagined as the 1930s Chicago-inspired Lincoln Park Supper Club. The “eatertainment” venue was always envisioned as an evolving concept, Schneider said.

“So, Icon is New York, Star will be Chicago, and once we get to Icon three, which we haven't released the name of yet, (it) will be Hollywood,” he said. “And so we're following the sun as we create this class.”

The line will make similar adjustments to some family-focused programming, such as its Adventure Ocean kids club . Even as the line has offered increasingly advanced gaming technology, children have also requested more analog options like foosball and pingpong. Icon’s Surfside neighborhood, originally designed with kids 6 and younger in mind, has proven popular with children as old as 10 and will cater to a wider range of ages on Star.

Royal Caribbean is also concept-testing new cuisine types for AquaDome Market, the line’s food hall that serves Mediterranean fare, crepes and more on Icon.

Schneider noted that like Icon’s Chief Dog Officer Rover, a golden retriever who makes appearances to “surprise and delight” guests, Star will have its own resident canine named Sailor (likely of the same breed). “So Rover is excited to have a sibling, who hopefully they'll be able to meet on Perfect Day at CocoCay.”

The line will roll out new technology on board, too. A waterproof bracelet that allows parents to track where their kids are via the cruise line’s app will be available after a pilot on Icon this summer. Schneider said the cruise line has also been working on facial-recognition stateroom doors “for a while” and expects them to be piloted on board Star.

Floating resorts vs yacht-like vessels: How to pick between big and small cruise ships

How much does Star of the Seas cost?

Prices vary by sailing date, room category and other factors, but 2025 cruises now start at $1,654 to $1,705 per person based on double occupancy. Fares include many meals on board, drinks like regular coffee and lemonade and more.
