Hinckley Picnic Boat MKIII

Paparazzi cameras were recently trained on Sag Harbor Bay off the coast of New York ‘s Long Island, where Matt Lauer, host of The Today Show , was seen getting some driving lessons for his brand-new Hinckley jet boat, Resilient .

News reports everywhere from the New York Daily News to Soundings Trade Only have stated that Resilient is a Hinckley T38, but the model and the photo of Lauer at the helm didn’t match up when our editors looked at them. We contacted Hinckley Yachts directly and confirmed that Resilient is actually the builder’s new-model Picnic Boat MKIII.

The Picnic Boat MKIII has a length overall of 36 feet, 11 inches. Her twin 320-hp Yanmar 8LV V8 diesels and Hamilton 274 jets push her to a top speed of 32 knots and a cruising speed of 29 knots.

Lauer was no doubt getting lessons on how to drive Resilient using Hinckley’s JetStick steering system, which comes standard on the Picnic Boat MKIII.

Hinckley has built some 450 Picnic Boat hulls since drafting the original design more than 15 years ago. See lots of great photos of the new MKIII iteration of the Picnic Boat at www.hinckleyyachts.com .

The Hinckley Picnic Boat MKIII was featured in our lineup of the Best New Trawlers and Pocket Cruisers .

Matt Lauer Takes Mystery Woman out on Yacht Date

By Stephanie Downs - July 11, 2020 01:27 pm EDT

Matt Lauer seems to have a new woman in his life. According to TMZ , the former Today anchor was spotted with a mystery woman in Orient, New York, a town near the end of the North Fork of Long Island. The duo was seen going for a ride on his $1.4 million boat that he has, interestingly enough, been named "Resilient."

Lauer and the mystery woman dined at Duryea's Orient Point, and they could be seen chatting it up as they shared a vegetable plate. After enjoying their dinner for about an hour, the duo boarded his yacht once more. During their excursion, the two even wore masks when they were out in public. While there has been no confirmation regarding the mystery woman's identity, TMZ noted that the woman in question bears a resemblance to Shamin Abas , one of Lauer's longtime friends. They reportedly started dating him towards the end of 2019.

Back in January, Entertainment Tonight did confirm that Lauer is dating Abas after they were spotted in late December, grabbing a flight out of New Jersey that was headed for New Zealand. The news came several months after Lauer finalized his divorce from Annette Roque, with whom he shares three children. Lauer and Roque split shortly after the former TV personality was fired from the Today show in light of sexual harassment allegations against him . The former couple finalized their divorce in September of 2019.

A source told ET that Lauer is looking to start over as he puts the past behind him. "Shamin has been a longtime friend to Matt and it's no surprise they've started dating," the source explained about Lauer's new relationship. "She was there for him throughout this process. Since Matt's separation, he was quietly dating women, but hadn't been serious until now. This romance with Shamin seems to make him really happy. She was one of the first friends to reach out and offer Matt support. They met in the Hamptons years ago and remained friends." Lauer and Abas reportedly began dating in October of 2019 and, ever since then, she has been by his side. The source added, "She has stood by him and isn't letting what's been reported affect their relationship. Matt and Shamin have so much in common. Shamin knows what he's been through and wants to be there for him for his next step in life."

Matt Lauer

Matt Lauer is enjoying himself as a newly-single bachelor ... wining and dining his date and taking her for a ride on his $1.4 million floating escape that screams resilience.

The fired "Today" show host pulled out all the stops this week while on a date with a mystery brunette in Orient, NY, a picturesque town at the end of the North Fork of Long Island.

Check out these videos and pics of Matt and his mystery woman as they dine at Duryea's Orient Point. They're awfully chatty as they pick at a shared vegetable platter.

Things went well for Matt ... after an hour at their table, the two left the fancy restaurant and boarded his yacht, named "Resilient."

As you know ... Matt was canned from NBC in Nov. 2017 in the wake of sexual harassment allegations against him, and not long after his wife, Annette Roque , filed for divorce . He's now officially single.

Matt Lauer Dining With Mystery Woman

Matt's on his best behavior here ... helping his date onto his expensive Hinckley T38 yacht before shoving off and taking the wheel as they head out into the beautiful blue waters for more summer fun. They even wore masks in public.

While Matt's date remains a mystery ... she bears a striking resemblance to Shamin Abas , his longtime friend who reportedly started dating him toward the end of last year. Abas, by the way, looks a lot like his ex-wife.

Matt Lauer takes boat lessons on his new $1.4 million yacht... which he's aptly named 'Resilient'

Matt Lauer has been spotted taking a break - perhaps to forget his low popularity ratings - by enjoying boating lessons on his new yacht, which he has appropriately named 'Resilient'.

The Today show host was seen taking a long trip on Sag Harbor Bay in East Hampton, New York behind the wheel of his new Hinckley T38, which costs $1.4 million without added features.

Lauer, who was sporting a cap and khakis, was spotted by a  New York Daily News photographer on Saturday as he took tips from two instructors aboard the luxury vessel.

The morning host and his wife, Annette Roque, have a $15 million mansion in the Hamptons, which is next to a $3.5 million, 30-acrea plot of land they are currently renovating to turn into a horse farm.

But the plans have angered residents living in the area, and many have attempted to prevent the construction, claiming it will be too intrusive and could cause traffic problems.

The day-long boat trip comes amid bad ratings for the once-beloved morning show anchor, who has come under fire since his co-host Ann Curry was ousted from her spot last year.

He was blamed for her swift departure, even though NBC bosses denied he had a part in it.

Yet Lauer seems to be very aware of his poor ratings.

At an event honoring Bloomberg Media Group CEO Andrew Lack earlier this month, he told the crowd that was surprised he had been invited to speak.

'If you’ve been following the papers lately, you know it’s been a bit rough for me,' Lauer said. 'These days, I only get asked to host dinners if polio is busy. I have a lower Q rating than polio right now.'

In the television industry, a Q score is a highly cited measure of likeability. Lauer's score has fallen by more than half in the last two years.

Days earlier, Lauer dug a bit further at himself as he introduced former 'Today' host Katie Couric.

'Katie has a way of making headlines,' he said. 'Who can forget when she was co-host of the "Today" show? She got a colonoscopy on TV. Not to be outdone, two weeks ago, I got one in The New York Times.'

Lauer could have been referring to any of a myriad of critical articles in the Times that have been written about him recently.

But he was likely referring to a story written by media critic Brian Stetler, which fingered Lauer as the reason for the 'Today' show's failing ratings.

Under fire: Lauer has been blamed for the swift departure of co-host Ann Curry (second left) last summer. They are pictured with fellow hosts Al Roker, Savannah Guthrie, Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford

'It is clear that the once-popular host’s relationship with his audience is in peril,' Stetler wrote. 'Mr. Lauer’s year is a lesson in how a combination of missteps - NBC’s and his own - can precipitate a star’s fall.'

Angry viewers have been calling on NBC to fire Lauer, who was blamed for playing a part in co-host Curry's ignominious demotion last year, and Today is still lagging behind its arch-rival on NBC.

‘today’ host matt lauer gets boating lessons — and a new yacht.

'Today' host Matt Lauer recently invested in a new luxury Hinckley T38 yacht.

A Daily News photographer spotted Lauer Saturday riding the luxury Hinckley T38 yacht, which costs $1.4 million without any souped-up options.

The TV celeb got driving tips from two instructors who tagged along during the daylong jaunt. He sported a blue jacket, beige khakis and a blue hat.

Lauer has been drowning in bad press ever since his former co-host Ann Curry was dumped from her morning gig last summer.

Lauer christened his yacht 'Resilient.'

The one-time golden boy was blamed for the fiasco, though NBC officials have insisted he had nothing to do with it.

Kathie Lee Gifford was so mad at the criticism of Lauer that she almost ran a full-page newspaper ad in his defense, signed by hundreds of his colleagues and friends.

Curry was absent from the long list of backers.

After dominating morning-show ratings for more than a decade, “Today” has been knocked off its perch by ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

Matt Lauer Stays 'Resilient' During Solo Labor Day Boat Outing

By TheBlast Staff on September 3, 2018 at 11:29 PM EDT

Matt Lauer enjoyed a different type of Labor Day this year by taking his luxury yacht out for a spin in the Hamptons.

Lauer's vessel, "Resilient," is usually seen with a packed deck of partygoers, but this year the former NBC TV man was cruising all by himself.

He reportedly recently told fans that he would be back on TV soon, but has not made any public moves for a comeback. Lauer has spent most of the summer out in the Hamptons, where he's been frequenting the trendy restaurants.

Matt Lauer Yachting in Sag Harbor Bay

Matt Lauer BnW

Likely trying to escape all the noise and hubbub in Manhattan over the weekend, Matt Lauer was seen yachting in Sag Harbor Bay on Saturday. A Daily News spy snapped shots of Lauer in his new $1.4 million  Hinckley T38 jet-powered yacht appropriately called “ Resilient .”

The Today host has had to be resilient of late as he endures continued bad press since allegedly getting his former co-host Ann Curry sacked last summer. Lauer and NBC officials deny he had anything to do with Curry ‘s firing, but his pal Kathie Lee Gifford has been so upset with all the backlash against him, she recently tried to run a full page newspaper ad signed by friends and colleagues—but not Curry —saying the host is a good guy. Lauer asked Gifford not to run the ad, but news of it got out anyway.

More locally, Southampton Town added to Lauer ‘s troubles by putting a stop-work order on his sprawling 40-acre horse farm in the township.

See pictures of the yacht below. See the Daily News ‘ pictures of Lauer in his yacht here .

Matt Lauer Finally Sells His North Haven Estate, But For How Much?

' src=

Get In-Depth Insights and Exclusive Content Delivered Direct to You .

Former host of NBC’s TODAY  Matt Lauer finally unloaded his waterfront Hamptons estate on North Haven  and now we know how much he banked.

According to Suffolk County deed transfers available this week, Lauer sold the three parcels on Actors Colony Road for a combined $40.9 million — $4.4 million more than what he paid for the property six years ago.

Though looking for a buyer for the better part of the last three years, he put the 6.3-acre property back on the market, once again, last summer for $43.995 million. The Corcoran Group’s Susan Breitenbach, who had the listing, did not return requests for comment.

Matt Lauer North Haven

The sale of the waterfront estate, known as Strongheart Manor, closed on April 28 in three separate transactions; 26 Actors Colony Road, a 4.01-acre lot with the main residence, traded for $29,039,000, 28 Actors Colony Road, a 1.27-acre parcel, sold for $7,771,000 and 32 Actors Colony Road, the 0.91-acre property, closed at $4,090,000.

The buyer has not been named publicly and is shielded in the deed transfers by three limited liability companies using the numerical for the address plus the words, “Other Colony.”

Lauer and his now ex-wife, Annette Roque, bought the home from the actor Richard Gere in 2016 for $36.5 million, according to published reports at the time. At one time, Gere was asking $65 million.

Approximately two years after becoming embroiled in scandal, Lauer first put the estate on the market in June of 2019 for $44.8 million. It has gone on and off the market several times. In the fall of that same year, it was asking $43.99 million, and by September of 2020 it was listed at $43.995 million.

The final combined sale was $3.9 million less than he originally wanted.

Matt Lauer’s Private Retreat

The traditional shingle-style main house was built in 1902. The highly regarded construction firm Bulgin & Associates renovated the property to turn it into an energy-efficient 21st-century home while still maintaining original craftsmanship. Two guest houses on the property have also undergone a renovation. In total, there is about 14,000 square feet of living space, 12 bedrooms and 12 bathrooms.

The gated property offers sweeping views across Peconic Bay to Shelter Island’s Mashomack Preserve and includes 300 feet of direct bay frontage. There is a 240-foot-long private deep-water dock, not to mention a sandy spit of beach and a private waterfront pond with a bridge and an “island-inspired tea house,” according to the Corcoran listing.

A large kitchen with a barreled ceiling has an oversized center island with a connected informal living space and a breakfast room with a banquet.

There is plenty of space for entertaining, with several areas, both indoor and out, for guests to gather, including a formal living room and dining room. A screened-in porch runs the entire length of the house, and outside there is an exterior fireplace pavilion.

Set amid the manicured lawns and flowering gardens is a 60-foot heated pool, a gym in a separate structure with doors that open to let the fresh air in and a basketball court. Plus, there is still room for a tennis court.

Located just minutes to Sag Harbor, the North Haven peninsula has been a hotbed of activity in recent months . Boaters love the area because it’s a quick ride to some of the best fishing and best waterfront restaurants in the Shelter Island-Greenport area.

As for Lauer, we doubt he is leaving the Hamptons altogether. Both he and his ex-wife, with whom he shares three children, own another real estate in Sag Harbor and Water Mill.

Damage Control: Leaked Emails About Matt Lauer Reveal How NBC Hushed Up Kathie Lee's 'He's No Monster' Remark

April 29 2013, Published 10:01 a.m. ET

Sagging ratings and bad press can't force TODAY show co-host Matt Lauer to sail quietly into the sunset.

As leaked emails reveal how NBC officials attempted to hush up Kathie Lee Gifford 's "He's no monster" remark about her TODAY show colleague, Lauer was spotted taking his new aptly-named yacht Resilient for a sail in the Hamptons over the weekend.

Accompanied by two instructors, Lauer was seen cruising along Sag Harbor Bay in his expensive new boat -- a luxury Hinckley T38, which retails at $1.4 million, without any extras, according to the NY Daily News .

Lauer appeared to be sending a message with the jet-powered cruiser's moniker in the face of a public backlash following the public ousting of his former co-host Ann Curry last summer.

The boating expedition comes as a series of leaked emails reveal how NBC tried to silence Gifford's attempts at reviving the embattled host's tarnished reputation.

Gifford recently revealed that she was so upset over the criticism directed at Lauer that she almost ran a full-page newspaper ad in his defense, signed by hundreds of his colleagues and friends. Notably absent from the letter was Curry's signature, though Gifford has claimed that Curry was out of the country and never got a chance to sign the letter.

Gifford refrained from publishing the letter after Lauer asked her to "keep it in the family," but it didn't take long for the press to gather wind of its existence.

When Gifford was asked about it at an event hosted by the American Mothers Inc, where she was being honored with the Mother of the Year award, the outspoken TODAY show host told Extra, "Matt is not a monster."

“You know a completely different person than the monster you’re reading about in the press," the wine-loving TV personality went on to say.

Gifford's attempt to defend her colleague raised red flags with NBC execs, who were so concerned with her use of the word "monster," they insisted on cutting it from the clip.

According to a series of internal emails obtained by show insiders, an internal press release was sent out in reference to the clip with Gifford's statements about Lauer, asking, “Is this okay?”

“Yes — no monster bites though," the email response said. "She says he is not a monster — don’t think we should use that one.”

Heeding the network's instructions, producers for Extra , an NBC property, cut all "monster" references and aired an abbreviated version of Gifford's comments.

“This man we love and respect so much and is handling this beautifully, how about, maybe they’d believe us?" Gifford was shown saying in the edited clip that aired Friday evening. "I think Matt’s an honorable man and a consummate professional."

Gifford isn't the only one coming to Lauer's defense. Former TODAY show anchor Meredith Vieira, who insists she won't be picking up a copy of Brian Stelter’s new book Top of the Morning, stuck up for her old co-anchor when asked about the whole Curry debacle.

“Even if NBC blew it from a p.r. point of view, you’ve got to move on. I think what is happening to Matt is really wrong,” Vieira told the New York Post .

Despite the fact that NBC officials insist Lauer had nothing to do with Curry's departure, the host continues to be blamed for forcing his former co-host out and the TODAY show's plummeting ratings. After holding onto the number one spot for over a decade, the TODAY show has slidden to number two in the rankings, as ABC's Good Morning America has taken the lead.

Matt Lauer Was 'Friendly' with Former “Today” Show Colleagues amid Wedding Reunion (Exclusive Source)

"There was no awkwardness," a source tells PEOPLE of the reunion

Matt Lauer 's reunion with his former Today show colleagues went smoothly, a source exclusively tells PEOPLE.

Lauer, 65, attended Today show producer Jennifer Long’s wedding to Reid Sterrett in New York City on Saturday, which also saw Savannah Guthrie , Al Roker , Hoda Kotb , Sheinelle Jones and Craig Melvin in attendance. ( Jenna Bush Hager , meanwhile, was out of town for a book event in Maine.)

“Matt Lauer was totally normal, friendly and cordial to his former Today show colleagues at the wedding,” the source says. “There was no awkwardness. They all talked.”

As for how Lauer and Guthrie, 51 — who hosted the show together for five years before Lauer’s 2017 firing — appeared to get along, the insider says, "Savannah gave Matt a hug and they talked for several minutes."

"They were all legitimately happy to be there," the source adds.

The wedding marked the first time the former co-hosts have been photographed at the same public place since Lauer’s termination from the show — a result of accusations of sexual assault against him by former network employee Brooke Nevils , which he has denied.

Several other women later came forward with similar experiences after Nevils broke her silence.

At the wedding, Lauer was joined by his girlfriend, Shamin Abas , while Guthrie attended with her husband, Michael Feldman.

Entertainment | five years after firing, matt lauer blames katie couric for losing ‘trust’ in others, report says, lauer has distanced himself from friendships after couric wrote about his sexual misconduct allegations in her 2021 book, a source close to the disgraced ex-‘today’ host told people.

Matt Lauer says his farewell to Katie Couric, his exiting co-host of the NBC "Today" television program in the studio, Wednesday May 31, 2006. With Lauer bringing the tissues, the "Today" show threw a going-away party Wednesday for 15-year host Katie Couric, who is leaving to become the next anchor of the "CBS Evening News." (AP Photo/Richard Drew)

A source told People that the disgraced former morning show host “was really upset” by the book, “Going There,” penned by Couric, his longtime friend and onetime “Today” co-host.

“She shared their private text messages and she semi-slammed him,” the source said. “It made him lose trust.”

“His level of trust has just diminished with a lot of people he considered friends and much of that was because of Katie’s book, and because talking to people from his past is painful,” the source continued.

Lauer was one of several high-profile men in media who fell from grace in the fervent early months of the #MeToo movement, sparked by investigative reports into multiple allegations of sexual harassment and assault involving producer Harvey Weinstein. After a number of women, including A-list female celebrities, went public with accusations against Weinstein, multiple women at NBC felt comfortable coming forward to allege they had been preyed upon in the workplace by Lauer.

Lauer, who co-hosted “Today” for 20 years, was fired from his job on Nov. 29, 2017, after being initially accused of inappropriate sexual conduct with one female staffer. Immediately following his ouster, complaints from multiple women came to light, including reports that he gave one woman a sex toy, exposed himself to another female colleague in his office and, more seriously, raped an employee in a hotel room at the Sochi Olympics in 2014. Lauer denied ever raping anyone and said all his encounters with women were consensual.

Four years after Lauer’s firing, Couric published her memoir, in which she said she had “no idea” t hat he had sexually abused and harassed multiple female co-workers during his time at NBC.

Couric wrote that her “heart sank” when she heard that Lauer had been fired. She wondered if the allegations were just wild rumors and she immediately sent him a text, expressing her love and support.

“I am crushed,” Couric wrote in a text quoted in her book. “I love you and care about you deeply. I am here. Please let me know if you want to talk. There will be better days ahead.”

Couric said Lauer responded with a blowing kiss emoji.

While Couric said she read about all the “awful things” Lauer had done, she still worried about him and feared he was “sleepless, haggard, depressed, maybe worse.”

Couric also said she felt it would have been “heartless to abandon him, someone who’d been by my side, literally, for so many years.” She said she didn’t speak out earlier, when she heard the “whispers” about his behavior with female colleagues, because “the general rule at the time was: It’s none of your business.”

Eventually, she said she came to realize that Lauer could be an “excellent professional partner, a good friend, and a predator.”

Couric’s language about Lauer was more harsh when she spoke to Savannah Guthrie on the “Today” show to promote her book. Couric condemned Lauer’s “disgusting,” “callous” and “abusive” behavior towards women. She also explained that his  actions went unchallenged because of the pre-#MeToo culture that he thrived in. TV news in the 1990s “was a pretty permissive culture,” Couric added.

Since Lauer’s firing, Couric isn’t the only friend from whom he has become estranged. The 63-year-old has “lost a lot of friends,” another source told People in 2021.

“People would check up on him for a while, but that’s stopped to a degree,” the source told People. “He just stays to himself, he doesn’t really reach out to people very much anymore or engage them and so he’s been losing touch with a lot of people.”

Lauer’s “lavish lifestyle” also had to change, the source told People in 2021. Before Lauer was fired, he had an estimated net worth of $80 million and owned multiple homes in Manhattan, in the Hamptons and in New Zealand.

“When he left the ‘Today’ show, he didn’t get paid a penny after he got fired. NBC stuck with that,” the source said. Lauer’s wife Annette Roque divorced him, and he sold at least two of his lavish properties, according to reports. But Lauer isn’t in the poor house. “He’s presumably sitting on mountains of money but then again, he had a lot of money in real estate,” the source added to People.

Lauer also is in a “transitional time” with his two older children — Jack, 21, and Romy, 19 — who are now in college, and his youngest, 16-year-old Thijs, who is in high school, People reported this week, citing a source who said, he’s “a semi-empty nester, not working.”

Graphic, Disturbing Details of Matt Lauer’s Alleged Sexual Misconduct

matt lauer yacht

Shocking new allegations have emerged about the sexual misconduct scandal that is quickly enveloping Matt Lauer. On Wednesday, mere hours after NBC announced that it had fired the Today anchor because of a complaint about alleged sexual misconduct, Variety has dropped a report with hideous allegations about the TV star’s alleged behavior. The claims run the gamut: he made lewd sexual remarks about female colleagues; he once invited a female employee to his secluded office, then showed her his penis; he gave one female colleague a sex toy with “an explicit note about how he wanted to use it on her,” Variety writes.

The allegations don’t stop there. Lauer would also reportedly quiz female producers about their sex lives, and play a crass, office-themed version of the game “fuck, marry, or kill.” He also reportedly had a button on his desk that allowed him to lock the door; two women tell Variety that it enabled him to “welcome female employees and initiate inappropriate contact while knowing nobody could walk in on him.” One former producer “who knew firsthand of these encounters” also told Variety that Lauer, who is married, allegedly cheated on his wife.

“There were a lot of consensual relationships, but that’s still a problem because of the power he held,” this person said. “He couldn’t sleep around town with celebrities or on the road with random people, because he’s Matt Lauer and he’s married. So he’d have to do it within his stable, where he exerted power, and he knew people wouldn’t ever complain.”

Representatives for Lauer have not yet responded to Vanity Fair ’s request for comment. Variety notes that he could not be reached for comment. The piece is the result of a two-month investigation which stretches back before The New York Times dropped its stunning Harvey Weinstein piece, which kicked off the sexual misconduct reckoning in Hollywood and beyond. Like Weinstein prior to the controversy, Lauer is a powerful figure in the entertainment industry. He’s been the face of the Today show for years, raking in an incredibly lucrative $25-million annual salary, per Variety. That’s why it was a shock for industry insiders to learn that NBC fired him so quickly, before any bombshell investigative report broke the alleged scandal.

Shortly after Variety published its report, the Times published one as well, reporting that NBC had received two additional complaints about Lauer. One was from a former employee who says she had sex with Lauer in his office in 2001. She told the Times, she “felt helpless because she didn’t want to lose her job,” adding that she “didn’t report the encounter at the time because she felt ashamed.”

NBC’s human resources department contacted her on Wednesday regarding the allegations, she said. Representatives for Lauer did not respond to V.F. ’s request for comment about this allegation. Reps for Lauer also did not respond to the Times ’ request for comment.

The announcement about Lauer’s firing was made Wednesday morning by Today anchor Savannah Guthrie, who read a note on air from NBC News Chairman Andy Lack :

“Dear colleagues, on Monday night, we received a detailed complaint from a colleague about inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace by Matt Lauer. It represented, after serious review, a clear violation of our company’s standards. As a result, we’ve decided to terminate his employment. While it is the first complaint about his behavior in the over 20 years he’s been at NBC News, we were also presented with reason to believe this may not have been an isolated incident. Our highest priority is to create a workplace environment where everyone feels safe and protected, and to ensure that any actions that run counter to our core values are met with consequences, no matter who the offender. We are deeply saddened by this turn of events. But we will face it together as a news organization—and do it in as transparent a manner as we can.”

“I will tell you right now, we do not know more than I have just shared with you,” Guthrie said after delivering the statement, later adding that she was “heartbroken” for Lauer, as well as the women who came forward. “We are grappling with a dilemma that so many people have faced these past few weeks: how do you reconcile your love for someone with the revelation that they have behaved badly? And I don’t know the answer to that.”

The 20 Best Fall Movies to Cozy Up With This Season

Megyn Kelly also addressed the news on the Today show, saying she has known Lauer for years and he has “been a friend, and kind, and supportive.” However, she also folded in a larger point about misconduct in the workplace. “What we don’t see is the pain on the faces of those who found the courage to come forward. And it is a terrifying thing to do. We don’t see the career opportunities women lose because of sexual harassment—or the intense stress it causes a woman dealing with it when she comes to work each day. I am thinking of those women this morning, and hoping they are O.K. The days to come will not be easy.”

The firing has sparked a nationwide discussion, with claims flying about Lauer and his alleged behavior and purported infidelity. It has also inspired renewed interest in his past comments, particularly this 2012 joke segment about sexual harassment, and the controversial departure of Ann Curry, the former Today show anchor who tearfully left the show in 2012. In an interview with People , Curry said she is “still really processing” the news about the allegations, but hopes to see a change in workplace culture. “We need to move this revolution forward and make our workplaces safe. Corporate America is quite clearly failing to do so, and unless it does something to change that, we need to keep doing more ourselves,” she said.

Matt Lauer Is 'on a Mission to Clear His Name' and 'Take Down' Ronan Farrow: Source

"In Matt's mind, he's focused on not being labeled a rapist," a source tells PEOPLE

Matt Lauer's lengthy op-ed denying the rape allegation against him is part of his "whole mission" to "clear his name," a source close to the disgraced Today show anchor tells PEOPLE.

"In Matt's mind, he's focused on not being labeled a rapist," the source says. "Matt cares so much about what people think about him — even though he might not want to admit that."

Last fall, former NBC employee Brooke Nevils alleged in Ronan Farrow's Catch and Kill: Lies, Spies, and a Conspiracy to Protect Predators that Lauer anally raped her in his hotel room at the 2014 Sochi Olympics. "It was non-consensual in the sense that I was too drunk to consent,” she told Farrow in Catch and Kill . “It was nonconsensual in that I said, multiple times, that I didn’t want to have anal sex.” She also said in the book that she had more sexual encounters with Lauer back in New York City, telling Farrow: “It was completely transactional. It was not a relationship."

In a lengthy op-ed for Mediate published on Tuesday, Lauer, 62, said he was "falsely accused of rape" and slammed Farrow's reporting in his best-selling book, claiming the Pulitzer-winning journalist did not properly fact-check certain allegations.

"He's on a mission right now to take down Ronan," the source continues. "He blames Ronan for getting him labeled a rapist. Matt completely believes it was a consensual affair, no different from what many powerful people do, but that he's had to suffer the consequences like nobody else."

The source adds of Lauer's fall from grace: "He was making $30 million a year and was taking helicopters from Long Island into work, four days a week. Now he's got nothing."

In his op-ed, Lauer acknowledged "having a consensual, yet inappropriate relationship with a fellow employee in the workplace."

"I say these words with sincerity and humility," he wrote. "I am sorry for the way I conducted myself. I made some terrible decisions, and I betrayed the trust of many people."

But he denied Nevils' allegation of rape.

"This accusation was one of the worst and most consequential things to ever happen in my life, it was devastating for my family, and outrageously it was used to sell books," he said.

In November 2017, Lauer was fired from NBC due to a complaint of “inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace." At the time, Nevils’ identity was kept anonymous at her request. Farrow's book, released on Oct. 15, 2019, was the first time the full details of her allegations were made public.

"At no time did Brooke Nevils ever use the words 'assault' or 'rape' in regards to any accusation against me while filing her complaint with NBC in November of 2017. That has been confirmed publicly. NBC never suggested I was being accused of such an offense when I met with their attorney on Nov. 28 of that same year. They have also confirmed that publicly," Lauer wrote in his op-ed.

"I was shaken, but not surprised, that few in the media were willing to thoroughly challenge the accusations against me, or the person making them. The rush to judgement was swift. In fact, on the morning I was falsely accused of rape, and before I could even issue a statement, some journalist were already calling my accuser 'brave' and courageous.' While the presumption of innocence is only guaranteed in a court of law, I felt journalists should have, at the very least, recognized and considered it," Lauer continued.

"I was also disappointed, but not surprised, that Ronan Farrow's overall reporting faced so little scrutiny. Until this week's critical reporting by The New York Times , many in the media perceived his work as inherently beyond basic questioning," said Lauer, referencing a May 17 article in the newspaper questioning some of Farrow's methods.

Representatives for NBC, Farrow, Nevils and the publisher of Catch and Kill did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.

In response to Lauer's op-ed, Farrow tweeted: "All I'll say on this is that Matt Lauer is just wrong. Catch and Kill was thoroughly reported and fact-checked, including with Matt Lauer himself."

Nevils also spoke out on Twitter, writing, "DARVO: Deny, Attack, Reverse Victim and Offender."
