40 Best Sailboats

  • By Cruising World Editors
  • Updated: May 24, 2024

the 40 best sailboats

Sailors are certainly passionate about their boats, and if you doubt that bold statement, try posting an article dubbed “ 40 Best Sailboats ” and see what happens.

Barely had the list gone live, when one reader responded, “Where do I begin? So many glaring omissions!” Like scores of others, he listed a number of sailboats and brands that we were too stupid to think of, but unlike some, he did sign off on a somewhat upbeat note: “If it weren’t for the presence of the Bermuda 40 in Cruising World’s list, I wouldn’t even have bothered to vote.”

By vote, he means that he, like hundreds of other readers, took the time to click through to an accompanying page where we asked you to help us reshuffle our alphabetical listing of noteworthy production sailboats so that we could rank them instead by popularity. So we ask you to keep in mind that this list of the best sailboats was created by our readers.

The quest to building this list all began with such a simple question, one that’s probably been posed at one time or another in any bar where sailors meet to raise a glass or two: If you had to pick, what’re the best sailboats ever built?

In no time, a dozen or more from a variety of sailboat manufacturers were on the table and the debate was on. And so, having fun with it, we decided to put the same question to a handful of CW ‘s friends: writers and sailors and designers and builders whose opinions we value. Their favorites poured in and soon an inkling of a list began to take shape. To corral things a bit and avoid going all the way back to Joshua Slocum and his venerable Spray —Hell, to Noah and his infamous Ark —we decided to focus our concentration on production monohull sailboats, which literally opened up the sport to anyone who wanted to get out on the water. And since CW is on the verge or turning 40, we decided that would be a nice round number at which to draw the line and usher in our coming ruby anniversary.

If you enjoy scrolling through this list, which includes all types of sailboats, then perhaps you would also be interested in browsing our list of the Best Cruising Sailboats . Check it out and, of course, feel free to add your favorite boat, too. Here at Cruising World , we like nothing better than talking about boats, and it turns out, so do you.

10 Best Sailboat Brands (And Why)

10 Best Sailboat Brands | Life of Sailing

‍ There's no denying that sailors are certainly a passionate bunch. We’re so passionate about our boats that we always try going for the best sailboats. To make it a lot easier for you, here are the best sailboat brands.

Owning a sailboat is an indulgence that many of us only dream about but very few ever have the privilege of sailing the seas in what they can actually call their own.

While there's nothing wrong with renting a sailboat, the honor of owning one is certain what many sailors dream of.

With a perfectly crafted sailboat as company, gliding through the water, waves, and wind brings some sort of unmatched comfort and peace.

Add this to the fact that sailing takes you far away from the daily hustles and bustles that we've become accustomed to in our daily lives and you'll see why the life of sailing is very appealing to the masses.

But without a proper sailboat, all this fun and the good life of sailing are thrown out of the window.

Contrary to the widespread opinion, owning a sailboat isn't beyond anyone's reach. It's something that we can all achieve. But before getting into that, it's important to know some of the best sailboat brands.

The best sailboat brands will make your life as a sailor a lot easier and more fun. The best sailboat brands have, for decades if not centuries, mastered the art of woodworking. They've dedicated their skills and immense amount of their time to designing and manufacturing nothing but the best quality of sailboats in the industry.

So if you've been looking for the best sailboat brands from all over the world, you've come to the right place. We'll discuss the best of the best, something that will give you a perfect getaway from your normal life.

Table of contents

‍ Must-Have Features for Your Sailboat

Before highlighting the best sailboat brands, it would be appropriate to jog your mind a little with some of the features that must be available in your sailboat.

Choosing a sailboat can sometimes be a matter of compromises. In other words, it's sometimes sensible to accept that a sailboat cannot have all the features that you desire.

As such, it's all about going with a sailboat that has the features that matter to you most.

For this reason, let's look at the most basic features that can make the difference in both safety and comfort while improving your sailing experience.

A Safe and Comfortable Sailing Cockpit

You'll most definitely be spending a huge amount of time in the cockpit. Whether you're keeping watch, trimming sails , helming, or just enjoying the scenery, there's no better place to do all these than from the cockpit. That being said, a good cockpit should have the following.

  • Have a good depth for safety reasons and adequate drainage
  • Should give you a quick and easy access to jammers, cleats, and other important parts of the winch system
  • Should have a seat or seats that are about 35 cm high, 50 to 55 cm wide to provide ideal support
  • The seats should be adjustable to offer maximum comfort and allow you to change your position

GPS Chartplotter

Use a GPS Chartplotter once and your sailing will never be the same without it. It not only allows you to map a course but is also a great way of ensuring that your sailboat exactly follows that course. It also gives you constant updates on ocean conditions, weather conditions , and potential hazards such as deadly currents and sandbars.

A GPS Chartplotter is also an important safety device that can help you in some very critical situations while out there on the water.

For instance, it has a man-overboard button that is essentially meant to allow you to receive coordinates of the exact location should someone fall off your boat.

Electric Winch System

This is an amazing addition to any sailboat. It allows you to sheet a jib even in high and strong winds with a simple press of a button. It also gives you the chance of trimming a mainsail easily while still carry out other essential tasks in the sailboat.

An electric winch system can be of great importance, especially if you're short on crew. This is because it can free up some crew members to carry other important tasks. In other words, it can make duties that would otherwise require more crew members a lot easier.

More importantly, an electric winch system can maintain safety even in the roughest of conditions, thereby preventing you and your crew from getting injured. In essence, an electric winch system will make your sailing a lot safer, less stressful, and more enjoyable.

Reverse Osmosis Watermaker

This is a very valuable accessory, especially if you're going on long sea voyages. You can spend days on end without drinking clean and safe water.

As the name suggests, you can use this accessory to turn seawater into purified drinking water. It uses the reverse osmosis method that's essential not only in removing bacteria and parasites from the water but also in turning the water into purified and safe drinking water.

Even though this device is pricey, it's a great way to mitigate the over-reliance on huge water tanks. All you have to do is to ensure that it's properly maintained and you'll have an endless streak of safe drinking water no matter where you are.

Wide and Clutter-free Deck

While the deck is often an overlooked feature of a sailboat, it can be the difference between a great sailing experience and a stressful one. In essence, the deck of a sailboat should be wide enough and clutter-free.

This is significant as it can enable you to quickly access different parts of your sailboat with hindrance or getting tangled. As you can see, this is particularly important in improving safety and reducing stress.

With that in mind, make sure that the deck is organized in such a way that you can have easy access to sails, masts, and winches.

You should, therefore, avoid sailboats with decks that are designed in such a way that you have to climb on top of the cabin just to access these features. Needless to say, this can be quite unstable and very dangerous especially when conditions are rough.

When designing its sailboats, this brand has made it a norm to add some features that stand out from the rest. For instance, the bowsprit is an integral feature that makes sailing a Hallberg-Rassy quite easy and much enjoyable. This is because it grants easy access to and from the deck. Its electric anchor winches facilitate smooth maneuvering. Even more, its large steering wheels makes it much easier to control the boat even in the roughest of conditions. 15' Feet 1957 Thompson

Marine-surveyor owned last 20 years, restored, 3M-5200 bottom, upholstery, deck, and transom all replaced, chrome re-plated. Nice boat!

29' Feet 2004 Damariscotta

Classic river boat. Boat has been great for the family during the summers and ready for a new home. During the winters, the boat has been kept in a heated storage unit located in Alex Bay. Boat includes a forward cabin with accessible head. Beautiful classic lines, foldable awning for shade, and aft wrap around seating for guests.

22’ Feet 1932 Chris craft

Owned since 1999 boathouse kept. In water and used every year including this year

18 Feet 1952 Stancraft

Built on flathead lake by Stan young Needs some tlc Runs great Moving must sell Hasn't been slipped so leaks into bilge when under way but has twin bilge pumps to handle. Stereo, go lite spots, project boat

25 Feet 1941 Chris-Craft

This rare 1941 antique 25' Chris-Craft Semi-Enclosed Cruiser, also known as the "Green & White", was sold new in 1941 by Irwin Marine in Weirs Beach, NH. HERKANANDA is the original boat name, an acronym derived from the names of the previous owner's four children. Our grandfather purchased the boat in 1953, again from Irwin Marine, and used it every summer on Squam Lake until 1965, when our father took ownership and stored it in various places (always indoors) until relocating it in 1995 to a boathouse at Weirs Beach on lake Winnipesaukee, where it remains today. Of the 600 known to be built, only 3 are known to be remaining. The Herkananda has its original factory canvas hardtop. The boat has a new fuel tank, is completely rewired and repainted. The boat comes with matching side curtains and seat cushions. The boat is available for viewing and a test-drive.

19 Feet 1969 Chris Craft Lancer

This boat is in very good original condition. I bought it this summer from original owner. It has been boathouse kept it's whole life. Scruffy paint job but no cracks, spider or otherwise anywhere on boat. Runs good but the outdrive won't go up and down all the time.

21 Feet 1953 Chris Craft

This is my Grandfathers boat which I inherited. I would love to restore it but don't have the resources to do it. It waqs put into storage in the early 1980's and is still sitting right where he left it in the garage. It is in excellent condition considering its age. I spent a lot of time on this when I was a kid and it means a lot to me. It's a beautiful boat, and I would love if someone could bring it back to life.

22 Feet 1986 century

Finally… I am humbly bringing to market what I firmly believe to be the finest fiberglass Coronado on the planet! Improved from OEM in every way I can think of. 1986… last year for the “purist” boats from Manistee. This is a brand-new boat, sort of. I started with an all-original lake boat (original owner) that spent its life in a boat house. 700 original hours. I threw everything away except for the hull, deck, windshield frame, fuel tank and miscellaneous trim. All structure out, foam out, etc. pics will tell the story. It will take several posts as I think I am limited to 80 pics per post. I will try to cluster them intelligently. Countless customizations… stringers and bulkheads nothing like original… and mine are glassed! No nailed 2 x 10s!!! Sloped stringers for engine mounts… no spacers! All kinds of seat storage due to seat design without floor. Incredible ventilation to keep the bilge clean and dry with plenty of air to engine. No foam!!! 2 blowers. Note chrome scoop on bow and stern scoops. Don’t belong on 1986 boats! See ventilation hose pics under bow. 2 battery boat (house and starting) with electrical design worthy of a much bigger, more complicated boat. Wiring is incredible… Built in battery charger with ACR. 6 speakers with subwoofer (7 total) with big amp and Bluetooth head unit. Serious spotlight and horn (not the junky original kind). The gauges speak for themselves. Notice the arch to the shape of the dashboard to match the windshield? All custom. See pics. Excellent high speed depth finder and GPS speedo. Push button start. Brand new (not rebuilt) Marine Power 420 HP aluminum 6.2 liter L87 with two year transferable warranty. Factory reman Velvet Drive. Tuning and prop selection hours only. Amazing engine. Sips gas. Entire deck covered in vinyl, not the silly gelcoat imprint. All through hulls (except for raw water pick up) moved to transom where they belong. Extra vent is for potti. Fuel fill moved to centerline where it belongs. Custom upholstery, obviously. That is a pump out potti under the back seat. That is a custom fold out sun pad suitable for someone 7 ft long. Hull finished in Imron with clear coat. Custom swim platform with ladder underneath… where it belongs! Underwater lights. All running gear and all trim freshly rechromed. Trailer brand new a couple years ago and spent most time in storage while boat was finished. Maybe 500 miles on it. Disk brakes both axles. Oversized capacity for boat… I have receipts for MATERIALS well over 60k (wholesale pricing, mostly). On top of that, about 3,500 hours, which you get for free. Best offer buys it. It is truly like no other Coronado you will ever find. The pictures tell the story to a point. I can fill in the blanks over the phone. The boat is located in Naples, Florida. Ready to go. Close to 55 mph... maybe more! Stunning. Take it to the Century Roundup!!! Text first 239.963.5003 8 am to 8 pm. Here's the "finished product" post, to start. Constuction posts to follow. Thanks for looking!!!!!!

15 ft Feet 1957 Century

We have completely restored it. It has a 5200 bottom. It has 13 coats of varnish, rebuilt engine and bottom outdrive. All re-planked African mahogany and all new screws. New upholstery, new 12 volt electrical and gauges. All new chrome. Hydraulic steering.

20 Feet 1950 Century

I bought this boat in 1985. It was my first antique boat. I stripped it down to bare wood, re-stained and varnished the sides and deck. Repainted the bottom. I had all the hardware re-chromed, and the instruments were restored. I borrowed a commercial sewing machine and made a new interior which came out pretty good, but it’s not show quality. I kept it in a covered well in a canal off Lake St. Clair. My friends and I had a lot of fun running around the lake on Saturday mornings. I entered it in a few ACBS boat shows and it won Captain’s Choice at Algonac one year. After a few years in the water the bottom started leaking so I hauled it out, pulled the engine and fuel tank and flipped it over. I took off the original Century bottom of ½” mahogany and replaced it with a 2-ply bottom of 1/8” marine plywood and 3/8” mahogany planking after replacing any frames that were bad. The whole bottom was bedded in 3M 5200. I just started working on the side planks when I found a Hacker triple cockpit, which I had wanted for a long time. So, I bought the Hacker and the poor Century got stuffed into a corner of the shop where it’s been sitting for 30 years. It needs new decks. I think the side planking, which is original, could be used. There are a couple that have some repaired damage. Depends on where you fall in the “Preserved original” vs. “100-point show quality” range. Personally, I’d keep the old planks, and I’m pretty picky. The 125 horse Graymarine engine ran when I put it away. It still turns freely but should have a rebuild. Or replaced with a modern engine. Overall, it’s a complete, very solid boat and would be a great starting point for a showboat. Or just fix it up a bit and have a fun boat to ride around in. It comes with the trailer shown in the photos which is old but has very low miles on it, probably less than 500. The boat is located in Michigan and is being sold as-is, without warranty.

16 Feet 1955 Lyman Outboard

This classic lapstrake, clinker-built outboard has been in one family for over 20 years. The boat was restored by a well-known restorer on Wellesley Island in the Thousand Islands approximately 20 years ago. Last hull repair was performed in 2010 by another well known restorer in Alexandria Bay, NY. For the last twelve years it has been in heated storage over the winter. It is in the water and running as of August 2024. The engine has had one recent repair, for a split shift rod keeper in the gear case. The hull and topside would benefit from a repainting and sanding/revarnishing. The Lyman is a lot of fun to tool around in and it takes the waves well for a small boat.

22 Feet 2009 Ian Bruce

Own this Classic Woody without all the expensive maintenance! Only 8 custom lanches were made by Ian Bruce of Montreal Classic Boatworks before he passed. Ian is known as the father of the Laser sailboat and his work still races all over the world including the Olympics. The Bruce is modeled on the 1945 Myles Jeffrey, but with Ian's design innovations. This fibreglass beauty has golden tan upholstery, burled ash instrument panel, GPS Speedo Classic Guages, genuine 1940's Chevy Butterfly steering wheel, customchromed windshield and navigation lights.

25 Feet 1948 Chris Craft

This example has been fully restored and repowered with a newer Mercuries EFI V-8 engine which moves the boat along smartly. The hull, decks, upholstery, flooring, and chrome have all been redone, along with a no soak bottom, just 3 years ago. The boat has been very well maintained and is sound throughout. The restoration was completed in 2021 from top to bottom, makes it in excellent condition. It is offered with a custom Load Right - Elite trailer with landing guides for ease of loading. A full waterline cover is included. Chris Craft made a total 208 of these 25’ boats from 1940 – 1950, and Copasetic is worthy of serious consideration if you’re in the market. Located just outside Annapolis, Maryland, and offered at $165,000. Underwent a six-year complete restoration. Selling due to owner health issues.

26 Feet Feet 1969 Lyman

22 Feet 1951 Chris Craft

According to it’s hull card, Chris-Craft built this boat in January of 1951. It was equipped with a ML 145hp motor. It was shipped to Bryant’s Marina in Seattle, Washington that year. The original owner was Henry Issacson, a local industrialist that owned the largest iron works in the Pacific Northwest at the time. It changed hands at least once in subsequent years as a friend of mine purchased it from someone other than the Issacson family in 1976. At some point during this prior period of ownership, the boat was repowered with a175hp MCL engine. My friend owned the boat until 2001 when I purchased it from him. The boat has been stored inside since that time. At the time I purchased the boat, the engine had been experiencing a loss of power. In the mid 2000’s I removed the engine for overhaul. A magnaflux of the block confirmed cracks that were non-repairable. The block was disposed of, but all the engine’s peripherals were retained if a new block were to be sourced. Alternatively, this boat would be a good candidate for V8 swap. The bottom is original and will likely need replacement, and the sides and deck will require stripping and refinishing. I am not aware of any rot in the boat but I have not conducted a comprehensive examination. The upholstery is in excellent condition. All the hardware is present. The only reason I am selling the boat is that I have another classic boat that I have decided to focus my time and resources on.

The Hibiscus Mezcal Mule: A Floral Twist on the Classic Mule

The Hibiscus Mezcal Mule: A Floral Twist on the Classic Mule

If you're looking to elevate your cocktail repertoire, the Hibiscus Mezcal Mule is here to offer a bold, refreshing take on the traditional Moscow Mule. This vibrant concoction blends smoky mezcal, smooth vodka, and the delicate floral notes of hibiscus tea, creating a cocktail that's as flavorful as it is visually stunning. Whether you're hosting friends or enjoying a cozy evening at home, this drink is sure to impress.

Why This Recipe Stands Out

The beauty of the Hibiscus Mezcal Mule lies in its balance of flavors. Mezcal brings a smoky depth, while Reyka Vodka adds a crisp smoothness. The wild hibiscus tea introduces a delicate floral note that pairs perfectly with the zesty lemon and fizzy Fever-Tree Club Soda. Topped with an edible hibiscus flower, this cocktail isn’t just a drink—it’s an experience.

Ingredients:

  • Juice of 1/2 a fresh lemon 🍋
  • 1 oz Reyka Vodka
  • 1 oz Montelobos Mezcal
  • 3 oz Wild Hibiscus Tea (brewed and chilled)
  • 2 oz Fever-Tree Premium Club Soda
  • Edible hibiscus flower for garnish 🌸

Instructions:

Prepare Your Glassware : Start by filling your favorite Moscow Copper Co. mug with ice. The chill of the copper mug will keep your cocktail perfectly cool.

Mix the Base : In your ice-filled mug, pour in 1 oz of Reyka Vodka and 1 oz of Montelobos Mezcal. Squeeze in the juice of half a lemon to add a zesty kick that balances the smoky mezcal.

Add Hibiscus Tea : Brew and chill 3 oz of wild hibiscus tea, then pour it into your mug. The floral notes of the tea will complement the depth of the mezcal and brighten the overall flavor.

Top It Off : Finish the drink by topping it with 2 oz of Fever-Tree Premium Club Soda. This will give the cocktail a refreshing fizz that elevates each sip.

Garnish : For the final touch, garnish your Hibiscus Mezcal Mule with an edible hibiscus flower. Not only does it add a pop of color, but it also emphasizes the floral undertones of the drink.

Why You’ll Love It

This cocktail is the perfect blend of flavors: it’s floral, citrusy, and has just the right amount of smokiness from the mezcal. The Reyka Vodka keeps it smooth, while the hibiscus tea adds a unique floral layer that’s perfect for those who enjoy experimenting with new, refreshing tastes. The lemon juice gives it a tart kick, and the Fever-Tree Club Soda adds that all-important fizz to make it light and easy to sip.

The edible hibiscus flower garnish adds a touch of elegance, making it an ideal drink for dinner parties, special occasions, or simply treating yourself to a unique cocktail.

When to Serve

The Hibiscus Mezcal Mule is versatile enough to be served year-round. Its floral notes make it refreshing for spring and summer gatherings, while the smoky mezcal makes it a cozy option for fall or winter nights by the fire. Plus, it pairs wonderfully with a range of appetizers and meals, from light salads to smoky grilled dishes.

So grab your copper mug, mix up this delightful drink, and let the sipping begin. Cheers to new adventures in cocktail-making! 🍹✨
