Vida: Is this the ultimate sportfishing mothership?

A keen fisherman wanted a mothership for his sportfishing fleet – so he landed a 55 metre Heesen and made the interior his own, says Marilyn Mower

Brooks Smith is a tournament fisherman so passionate about the sport that he keeps fishing boats in both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. His custom boats – all called Uno Mas – are usually towards the top of the leaderboards at major billfish tournaments. Smith has strong opinions about sportfishing boats: that they should be cold-moulded wood and shouldn’t be too big; 21 metres is about the largest he believes can be nimble enough to catch a very large fish.

The problem is that accommodation on that size of sportfishing boat is limited, so he and his wife, Maria, are relegated to shoreside hotels or villas for tournaments. “In 2012 I realised the thing that would suit me was to have a mothership large enough to live on and with enough tankage to refuel my fishing boats on location or on delivery,” Smith says. “I looked around at the typical commercial-type motherships that seemed available, but I just couldn’t see myself on a converted crab boat.”

His first mothership was  Viva Mas , a 37.8 metre 2008  Broward  that held more than 41,000 litres of fuel. It worked as a fuelling station, but Smith began to “dream of cruising around the world” to places his Broward couldn’t reach. He went to the 2016 Fort Lauderdale Boat Show with the goal of finding a bigger boat that stayed under 500GT. “Instead, he ended up on [ Heesen’s  70 metre, 1,130GT]  Galactica Super Nova , twice,” says Thom Conboy, Heesen’s sales director in North America, Mexico and the Caribbean. Long story short, after looking at a 47-metre Heesen that would have kept him under 500GT, Smith signed a letter of intent in December 2016 for a 55-metre fast displacement steel yacht with more outside space and greater tankage that was already well along in construction.

Within a few months of meetings about customising his yacht, however, Smith realised there were a few things about the boat that just didn’t fit. “Some boats are pretty, but they just don’t work [for me].” Smith was able sell his slot and step into the next 55 metre Hessen had under way, one that he could customise to a greater extent. “I dove right into that project, making modifications to the interior. I have designed all three of the custom sportfishermen I have now – a 77ft [23 metre] Willis and 68- and 60-footers by Bayliss. It’s something I enjoy.” The original plan for Project Antares – a spec project with an interior by  Francesco Paszkowski  – had a garage forward on the main deck for two large tenders accessible through gullwing doors. Since Smith would use the yacht most often in tandem with his sportfishing boats, large tenders were not a requirement. What he wanted was a larger master suite.

That request barely caused a ripple, according to Peter van der Zanden, Heesen’s general manager of design and development. Without scrapping any major structure, they created stowage on deck for the tenders with storage below for water toys and moved the cabin’s forward bulkhead two frames toward the bow, adding a vertical window on each side. The resulting suite is 80 square metres, with additional dressing room and wardrobe space, plus sufficient floor area for two chairs and a table under the nearly full-height windows on starboard and for a divan and a vanity on port. A king-size bed on centreline is under a trayed ceiling that creates a modern canopy effect, contrasted with a darker gloss wood overhead treatment along the windows. With its planked oak floor, the room gets a cosy on-trend vibe enhanced by a neutral palette of taupe, beige and grey.

The full-beam master bathroom continues the contemporary style with polished stainless steel, glass, dark high-gloss wood and two different stone surfaces in an identical colour palette. “The stones had already been chosen and delivered to the shipyard but had not been cut and I was able to arrange the placement to highlight the design,” says Elmar Benavente of  BE Design , based in Boca Raton, Florida.

Vida , as Project Antares would become, is Benavente’s first yacht, but he had worked with the owner on buildings and residences and knows his tastes. “I happened to be at the office on a Saturday and Brooks called me and said he was in a design meeting about a boat he was building,” Benavente says. “He asked me to grab a bunch of material, wood and carpet samples and hurry. I arrived and there were all these people sitting around the table and as I started pulling things out of the box he says: ‘Finally, here is someone who understands what I want.’ That was my introduction to yachting.”

“I like contemporary, but not a white, minimal contemporary,” Smith says, describing his taste as “kind of Colorado contemporary”. Working to transform the interior motif created by Paszkowski and  Margherita Casprini , BE Design’s task was to tone down and warm up the joinery and surfaces in the original package. When Smith balked at teak, Benavente suggested oak stained a deep taupe tone and with a mix of gloss and satin finishes to create interest. The signature design element is high-gloss wood battens laid in a vertical grid over other surfaces like mirror, fabric or lacquered wood. Its peek-a-boo effect creates interest and movement and can be used to imply separation in large open areas such as the main saloon, where the battens run up the wall, across the ceiling and down the other side. The slatted theme repeats in the leather-wrapped window blinds that cast a matching shadow pattern across the floors and furniture.

The same technique dramatises the three-deck circular staircase at the centre of the yacht where it acts as a foil for the polished steel centre column and reflective surround supporting floating, backlit white onyx steps. On a yacht designed for relaxation, it is one of two high-glam spots that give it unique character, the other being the wine display walls of backlit onyx at the entrance to the saloon.

Timmo Elliott, who served as the owner’s interior project manager during the fit-out, calls this the show-stopper. With the saloon entrance narrowed by air ducts and a stairway to the engine room, Benavente chose to wrap the space in boldly patterned and backlit onyx to display wine bottles that float off the wall courtesy of some clever spring-tensioned holders. Considering that the display is not chilled, it’s safe to say the vintage Dom Pérignon won’t be stored on the wall, but the effect is entertaining and welcoming – just what an entrance needs. The entry opens on to a saloon that, although it is the boat’s most formal space, is still shoes-off comfortable with chunky, modern furniture upholstered in soft chenilles.

Elliott, whose superyacht CV includes 87 metre  Lürssen Ace  and 100.8 metre Kusch Yachts I Dynasty , made myriad on-the-spot decisions and helped finesse the impact of commercial certification on Benavente’s design. He also enhanced the yacht’s functionality from a crew perspective, increasing the number of washers and dryers and adding space for air-drying clothes, plus separating the laundry from the crew mess. Lower deck accommodation – four double cabins and a full-beam VIP – is relaxed and carries the same design and colour scheme as the main deck. The twin berths can be transformed into doubles by the crew in just a few minutes. For ease of service, a hidden passage links the crew area with the guest corridor.

The bridge deck, with its upper saloon and outdoor dining area, is likely to be the prime hang-out space, and with this in mind, the pantry on this deck is larger than most. A dumb waiter links it to the galley below to facilitate service, while a 75-inch television and a large backlit onyx wet bar signal “man cave”. In keeping with his passion for fishing, the owner had three large outdoor tables made for the boat by Release Marine, a premier US builder of fighting chairs.

The only thing missing from the mothership’s wish list was Maria’s pool and waterfall. While an entire pool and its related dump tank could not be accommodated at this point, Heesen found a way to locate an unusually large spa pool on the sundeck and framed it with a waterfall feature. With another large wet bar flanking movable chairs and sun loungers, the sundeck can be turned into party central at dockside and, as such, it is fitted with an RGB computer-controlled light system that can dial up any colour imaginable.

Sundeck is almost a misnomer as a large hardtop shades most of the spa pool and seating area and the underside of it features a fibre-optic array of constellations to twinkle overhead. Heesen customised the space by raising the entire hardtop structure six inches to accommodate the owner’s height; it’s a design feature Heesen is thinking of retaining for the next yachts in the series, at least one of which will carry the upper saloon full beam, which, with the tender garages, will add 20GT to the volume calculation.

Of course,  Vida  won’t always be a mothership. For days when it’s all about cruising with guests, she boasts a large gym in the stern instead of a beach club, although considering its dayhead, shower and dive locker, with the stern door open to the wide bathing platform, it will function much the same.

Vida  is more than just the successful and fast completion of a semi-custom yacht. She is Heesen’s first yacht to be Tier III compliant. The package was designed by MTU and uses a Hug exhaust system to reduce NOx emissions, which makes her name  Vida  – which means life – the perfect fit.

Willis Custom Yachts' plans will reignite Stuart's boatbuilding heritage, create jobs

Portrait of Ed Killer

Stuart's legacy of boatbuilding dates back 100 years. It was 1921 when Curt Whiticar built his first boat, launching Whiticar Boat Works and what would become a mecca for the construction of some of the world's finest high-performance sport fishing yachts.

Since then, Stuart has become synonymous with world-class sportfishing thanks to brands such as Monterey, Billy Knowles, Gamefisherman, Garlington-Landeweer, Jim Smith, L & H, Tribute and American Custom Yachts.

The latter, in the Treasure Coast Commerce Center in west Stuart, was acquired by  Willis Custom Yachts  earlier this year, but terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Boatbuilding: Flipping the 8 ton hull upside down is an important milestone

Moving day: How a 100-foot sportfishing boat goes from land to sea

Stringers Tavern & Oyster Bar: Great food blends with Stuart's boatbuilding history

Willis Custom Yachts is a new entity formed from Willis Marine Inc. , a boatbuilding company founded by Mark Willis of Stuart in 1990. American Custom Yachts was founded in Stuart in 1991 by Dominick LaCombe.

The new company plans to add 75 jobs soon, and more in the years to come once it starts to build the center console brand Venture Boats in a new manufacturing facility. The company plans to build that in two or three years on the vacant land across the South Fork of the St. Lucie River from the company's main yard.

But first, the boat must be redesigned to compensate for added outboard motors, said Doug West, president and general manager of Willis' yacht services.

Willis Custom Yachts

The sale of the waterfront property along the South Fork of the St. Lucie River and Okeechobee Waterway, and in between the bridges for Interstate 95 and Florida's Turnpike, gives Willis Custom Yachts:

  • 64 acres on both sides of the waterway
  • 34 acres of working boatyard
  • About 300 feet of frontage along the waterway
  • 25 wet slips with 8 feet of depth
  • 2 haul-out wells

The new company announced plans to add:

  • 220-ton marine lift
  • 150-ton marine lift (new)
  • 90,000-square-foot yacht-construction building
  • On-site restaurant
  • New construction facility for Venture Boats, a center console brand now owned by Willis Custom Yachts.

Willis Custom Yachts also will build a new waterfront facility east of Northwest Flagler Avenue near the Roosevelt Bridge in Stuart to facilitate new yacht-customer deliveries.

“I am very excited to have waterfront access of this magnitude," Willis said. "It changes the game for us and will vastly enhance our ability to provide the highest quality service and support to all of our customers.”

Willis Marine sportfishing boats

Over the last 30 years, Willis has developed a reputation as being a builder of one of the finest sportfishing yachts on the ocean. His partner, Brooks Smith, founder and CEO of InComm Payments , a global financial technology company, is an avid angler and longtime Willis customer.

Willis, originally from North Carolina, began his career in the fishing and boating industry early in life, obtaining his captain's license at age 19. He got an engineering degree from Western Pennsylvania University. After graduating, Willis pursued his passion for fishing in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, where he built his first boat.

Willis Marine has built and launched 15 boats since being founded, including well-known boats on the sailfish and marlin tournament circuits such as Katie M, Lucky Punch, NuCo2, Uno Mas and the second Bone Shaker, which originally had been the Katie M.

Custom sportfishing boats of 60-90 feet in length cost owners millions of dollars and often take 2-3 years to build one boat. A 63-foot boat built by Willis in 2001 is currently offered by a broker for $2.9 million.

What changes are coming?

The next Willis boats — 61-90 feet and designed to perform in fishing scenarios in seas around the world — will be rolling off the production line at a faster rate in coming years, West said.

"Smith is big into technology and innovation. We are going to introduce in the new boatbuilding facility a lot of machinery so we can reduce the build time significantly. That will allow us to build six boats at a time instead of one," West told TCPalm.

West joined Willis from Lauderdale Marine Center, where he worked in the yacht service industry since 2015. Before that, he worked for the family of Wayne Huizenga with Blockbuster and AutoNation. In 2005, Wayne Huizenga Jr. bought Rybovich , a boatbuilding and yacht repair and service facility in Riviera Beach. The next year, Huizenga Jr. called West about coming to Rybovich to get operations in shape.

West said Willis' main focus will be to complete the project begun in 2020 by American Custom Yachts, hull No. 22, a 68-footer named Cambeaux, and to finish hulls No. 15 and 16, two 70-footers. West said three new orders already have been placed.

Francesco Paszkowski  worked on the interior design for the VIDA yacht in collaboration with Margherita Casprini.  BE Design Associates  also contributed to the VIDA’s interior at a later date.

There is accommodation for 12 guests in 6 cabins, in one master suite, two VIP suites, one double, and two twins. The VIDA has a capacity of 13 crew members on board for a luxury experience for guests.

The VIDA yacht features a contemporary yet sophisticated style with the best quality materials like travertine, Calacatta marbles, and Alpilignum teak. The colors of the decor are earthy and bring a sense of livable luxury.

This was important to the owner, as he wanted a floating home for him and his family to enjoy while on fishing expeditions.

Indoor/outdoor seating is abundant throughout the 55m yacht, which offers plenty of space for guests to enjoy fine dining and socialize together.

She also features a large beach club that makes sunbathing and lounging by the water easy for guests.

The beach club also features a gym. She has a pool with LED lights that match the ambiance created by lights on the hardtop roof of the VIDA.

VIDA yacht exterior

The exterior of the VIDA yacht was designed by  Omega Architects , boasting a sharp and masculine exterior that makes her stand out on the water.

Heesen Yachts  built her in their Netherlands-based shipyard and delivered her to the owner in 2019.

Her imposing exterior features a white steel hull and aluminum superstructure. VIDA was designed to be a fishing boat that wasn’t cramped so that everyone on board could enjoy fishing expeditions and tournaments.

VIDA yacht specifications

The VIDA yacht is a 55m superyacht with a 9.6m beam and a 3.15m draft. The yacht has a displacement of 740 gross tons and is powered by twin MTU engines.

With a range of 4500 nautical miles, she has a cruising speed of 13 knots and a maximum speed of 16 knots.

She has a Lloyd’s Register classification. VIDA acts as a mothership to a fleet of fishing boats. She had to be large enough to serve as a filling station for the other sportfishing boats in the owner’s fleet to accommodate this feature.

Rich Inventor And Pretty Fishing Boat Captain Embroiled In Ugly Lawsuit!

lace allenius

A local female fishing captain and her rich inventor former boyfriend are entangled in a pair of ugly lawsuits that hint at a violence-filled relationship.

Capt.  Lace Allenius , 32, owner of Fishing Adventures With Lace, and Fort Lauderdale multi-millionaire  Merrill Brooks Smith , her 62-year-old ex-beau, have been flinging ugly allegations of gold-digging and domestic abuse at each other in a Palm Beach County court.

Smith, known for his pioneering of pre-paid cards and computer point-of-sale technology, and Allenius are headed to a possible trial early next year.

By both their accounts, things between them were honky dory when they met in 2013. They got so close that, allegedly with Smith’s financial assistance, Allenius packed her bags and her young daughter from a previous relationship, and moved to Boynton Beach from St. Petersburg to be closer to Smith.

Faith Based Events

In time Smith, who lives in a $10 million mansion on a Las Olas canal, claims he eventually discovered that Allenius “had a habit of drinking excessively,” he claims in his complaint, and acting violently when drunk.

Luxury Rules at the Moscow Yacht Show

Maria Sapozhnikova

The windy Russian autumn weather might be a little bit tricky for sailing, but it doesn’t stop brave yachtsmen from all over the world from flocking to Russian capital in the beginning of September when the Moscow Yacht Show commences. The main Russian Yacht exhibition gathers professional and amateur yacht lovers together under the wing of The Royal Yacht Club.

This year it took place for a fourth time already. The exhibition is considered the principal event on the sporting and social calendar. The Moscow Yacht Show 2010 united in one area three of the largest Russian yachts distributors: Ultramarine, Nordmarine and Premium Yachts.

A wide range of yachts were on display for a week. An exhibition showcased yachts both from Russian manufacturers and world famous brands: Azimut, Princess, Ferretti, Pershing, Riviera, Doral, Linssen, etc.

It was a real feast for seafarers as visitors of the show had a unique chance not only to take a look at the newest superyachts before they hit the market, but also to evaluate their driving advantages during the test drive. The show provided an excellent opportunity for yacht enthusiasts to choose and buy a new boat for the next season.

The event started with the grandiose gala evening. It included grand dinner, the concert and professional awards ceremony for achievements in Russian yachting industry. The guests also enjoyed the annual regatta.

Special guest Paolo Vitelli, Azimut Benetti Group president, opened the evening.

Next year organizers assured guests they would bring more yachts, the scale of which will even make oligarch Roman Abramovich envious. Sounds very promising indeed.

Sunrise Yachts, a luxury yacht building company which is based in Turkey, has been made a main sponsor of next year’s 2011 Moscow International Boat Show (MIBS). The four-day Russian yacht show event is currently scheduled to run from April 14-17 at the Moscow’s Crocus exhibition centre.

moscow boat show

MIBS is organised by the ITE Group and it is one of Russia’s leading boat shows and is an internationally recognised superyacht event. The show covering everything from small parts and accessories to large superyacht with over 9,000 people and 178 exhibitors attended the last year show.

The Paolo Scanu-designed Sunrise 45 yacht is an ocean-going cruising yacht that was released in 2009 to much acclaim at this was the group’s first-ever model.

Sunrise Yachts was founded in 2007 by the German entrepreneur Herbert P Baum along with the French-British yacht builder Guillaume Roché. The luxury yacht group is based in Antalya, Turkey and utilises a 10,000sq m shipyard facility. Sunrise has two sheds measuring 100m (328ft) x 16m (53ft), as well as a 70m (230ft) x 16m (53ft) fully acclimatized paint shed that can accommodate new-build and refit projects up to 65m (213ft) in length and 1,200 tonnes displacement.

Along each side of the yacht-building facility, space is available for long-term sub-contractors with the latest equipment and logistics capabilities, along with air-conditioned storage, ventilation and extraction plants. The shipyard is organized as an “assembler,” based loosely on the car industry’s model, with a small, yet powerful project management team charged with running all the in-house long-term sub-contractors.
