At a gala ceremony in Ciragan Palace Kimpinski, the winners of BOAT International’s prestigious World Superyacht Awards were announced. The nominees represent the pinnacle of superyacht design from around the world, across both sailing and motor yachts. We are delighted to be able to bring you details of some of the evening’s winners.

Luxury superyacht KENSHO by Admiral Yachts

Luxury superyacht KENSHO by Admiral Yachts

Motor yacht of the year: KENSH Ō

Despite stiff competition superyacht KENSHŌ was the winner by quite some margin with the judges commenting that her owner’s commitment to the project was the deciding factor. He travelled the world visiting around 100 landmark yachts to draw up a list of attributes he admired, and the result is this fabulous and unique design.

She was built by Admiral Yachts , part of The Italian Sea Group in collaboration with Netherlands based Azure, Germany’s archineers.berlin and Parisian design studio Jouin Manku. At 75m (246ft), she is the largest yacht produced by the shipyard to date, and since receiving this award, no-doubt the most celebrated.

Superyacht KENSHŌ is available for charter in all the top charter destinations.

ALEA superyacht

ALEA superyacht

Sailing yacht of the year: ALEA

Sailing yacht ALEA’s owner wanted to create a performance yacht which could circumnavigate the world in speed and comfort. The resulting design from Germán Mani Frers, built by Vitters , is a stunning 56.0m (183’9″) vessel with a sleek and powerful hull form and distinctive reverse bow to increase speed. The comfort is provided by uncluttered decks, 360-degree views from the living areas and a sizeable beach club.

Sailing yacht ALEA is not currently available for charter, but runner up in the category, 34.59m (113’6”) sailing yacht SØRVIND can accommodate up to eight guests on charters around the Mediterranean .

Classic motor yacht MARALA

Classic motor yacht MARALA

Rebuilt Yachts: MARALA

To be entered into the Rebuilt category, yachts must have undergone a significant renewal of the exterior, interior and technical areas. The standout winner was motor yacht MARALA, a classic Camper & Nicholson yacht, built in 1931 and boating an illustrious and fascinating history. Her rebuild over the last two and a half years at Pendennis Shipyard in Falmouth has resulted in a yachting treasure being saved, which judges felt made her a stand-out winner in this category.

For more information about the beautifully and meticulously rebuilt superyacht MARALA and her story, read our dedicated article . She is available for unique charters around the Mediterranean for up to 12 guests, who will be looked after by a 19-person crew.

Three tww yachts nominated for the 2024 world superyacht awards.

We are delighted to announce that three TWW superyachts have been nominated for a Neptune at the 2024 BOAT International Superyacht Awards: ALUNYA, JIMMY (ex. GREY), and EMERALD.

All three yachts were launched last year, among the seven successful TWW Yachts-managed deliveries for 2022. ALUNYA is a fantastic new build by Benetti, which features the innovative Oasis Deck; JIMMY, another Italian new build, is an evolution of Tankoa’s successful S501 series; while EMERALD is a stunning reimagination of a 1990s Feadship, refitted at Balk Shipyard.

The Boat International Superyacht Awards recognise the ingenuity and craftsmanship of the most remarkable superyachts from across the globe. This marks the 19th edition of the globally acclaimed event, which will be held in Venice, Italy, between 3 to 4 May 2024.

ALUNYA | Nominated for Displacement Motor Yachts below 500GT, 45m and above

ALUNYA, the sixth hull from the revered Benetti B.NOW 50m series, and the second to feature Benetti’s patented Oasis Deck, was launched in May 2023 and showcased at the Monaco Yacht Show.

This innovative deck is a key highlight of ALUNYA. Twin hydraulic winged terraces, port and starboard, extend the width of the aft deck to an impressive 36-square-metre beach club and outdoor living area. From this generous al fresco social space, owners and guests can enjoy unobstructed 270-degree sweeping vistas.

Beyond the aft deck, ALUNYA is just as impressive. Accommodation is for 10 guests, across five well-appointed staterooms. The owner’s suite, located on the main deck forward, is complete with a study area, a large ensuite, and a private terrace. The remaining guest accommodations are found on the lower deck.

When ALUNYA rejoined the market mid-construction, TWW Yachts swiftly sold the project to a long-standing client. We then managed ALUNYA throughout her construction and we have since welcomed her into the TWW Yacht Management Fleet.

boat international world superyacht awards

JIMMY | Nominated for Semi-Displacement or Planing Motor Yachts, 40m and above

JIMMY (ex. GREY) may be the fifth hull from the Tankoa S501 series, featuring the distinctive sleek and sporty exterior styling, but once onboard, you’re enveloped by a completely different superyacht experience.

The general arrangement sets JIMMY apart from the rest of the series, resulting in a more spacious feel. Large expanses of glass enhance this further, offering panoramic vistas from most areas onboard.

Another significant departure from her sister ships is the foredeck. JIMMY features a stunning glass-sided swimming pool and a 144-inch retractable C-seed outdoor cinema, that converts this traditionally less-used space into an al fresco paradise. Integrated speakers around the pool deliver an exceptional audio experience.

TWW Yachts oversaw the construction of JIMMY and was engaged for both charter and yacht management services before assisting in finding her new owner when she returned to the market.

boat international world superyacht awards

EMERALD | Nominated for Refitted Yacht

EMERALD is a classic 1990s Feadship brimming with modern charm. Although she exudes a regal and antiquated exterior, the onboard experience tells a different story. This refit was a labour of love, and the results speak for themselves.

Balk Shipyard was contracted for this extensive sixteen-month refit, during which EMERALD underwent a thorough overhaul. The interiors were completely stripped out, the general layout was reconfigured, and the stern was extended. The objective was to create a yacht perfect for extended trips with the whole family.

EMERALD offers something for everyone onboard: ample al fresco space for lounging and dining, comfortable seating and social areas, a garage filled with water toys, and a spacious aft deck capable of carrying a tender. Accommodations cater to 14 guests and 10 crew members, with twin Detroit engines delivering a top speed of 14 knots.

TWW Yachts worked with the owner from procurement, throughout the refit and is now representing EMERALD on the charter market.

World Superyacht Award winners revealed

Monday, November 16th, 2020

Written by: Marine Industry News

boat international world superyacht awards

The finest superyachts from across the globe have been recognised at the 15th annual edition of the World Superyacht Awards. This year’s winners include Lady S (with the only Dolby 3D IMAX cinema ever installed on a superyacht) and the iconic 77.3-metre Pi , which accepted two Neptune awards for winning her individual class as well as the highly coveted prize of Motor Yacht of the Year.

The BOAT International World Superyacht Awards are said to recognise the ingenuity and craftsmanship of the most remarkable luxury yachts from across the world.

The winners were revealed at a virtual ceremony. Some 57 nominees were presented to the panel of 20 current and former yacht owners.

“It’s been another exceptional year for the superyacht sector with some ground-breaking designs in this year’s entries. The winners of these awards represent the absolute pinnacle of yacht design and construction and, on behalf of the team at BOAT International, I’d like to offer heart-felt congratulations to this year’s winners,” says Stewart Campbell, editor-in-chief of BOAT International.

Highlighted winners from Boat International include:

Refitted Yachts: Oasis (59.4m) Italian studio, FM Architettura d’Interni, refitted this legendary vessel to make it useful for three generations of its owners’ family. The main focus of the redesign was creating flexible living areas in preparation for the yacht’s first summer season with the new owners and their three-generational family. This included a redecorated sundeck, master cabin and the yacht’s public saloons to make them suitable for contemporary lifestyles.

Rebuilt Yachts: Vagrant (40m) Rebuilt by the Royal Huisman shipyard over a 22-month period, Vagrant was first designed by Nathanael G Herreshoff and launched in 1913. Vagrant was completely stripped out, with her interior and deck woodwork carefully taken apart for preservation. The hull was sandblasted, thin plates replaced, and all her rivets welded in place to avoid potential future leakage. All engine room equipment, wiring and piping was completely replaced at the Dutch yard, while her woodwork was repaired and restored where possible. The detailed work undertaken to preserve this magnificent yacht will allow her to sail for another 100 years.

Support Vessels: Hodor (66m) Built on a catamaran platform, Hodor ’s 22.5-knot top speed is sufficient to outrun her mothership, making her able to prepare tenders and toys for immediate use when the mothership arrives and, on departure, pack up, overtake, and repeat the process. Hodor carries five tenders, the largest of which has a 17m overall length, and a whole host of toys. There are nine jet skis and four quadbikes, two all-terrain vehicles and two trail motorcycles, and two Laser dinghies and a Hobie Cat. In addition, there is also a submarine that is housed in a garage on the main deck.

boat international world superyacht awards

Sailing Yachts and Sailing Yacht of the Year: Canova (43.3m) The eco-focused, 43.3m Canova was built by Baltic Yachts and designed by Bruce Farr as a fast cruising yacht. The judges admired her high quality of build, attractive lines, excellent layout, and innovative technology. Canova boasts ground-breaking innovation with her Dynamic Stability Systems foil, whose proven ability to reduce heel, increase speed and improve the comfort of the ride might just persuade more owners to build large sailing yachts. Canova took home two awards due to the ground-breaking DSS and environmental technology, but also the calm practicality of her interior design by the Milan-based Lucio Micheletti, and a general arrangement plan that placed the crew aft in excellent quarters.

Semi-Displacement or Planning Motor Yachts Below 500GT (30m to 34.9m): IV Dreams (32.8m) IV Dreams provides a well-balanced blend of good design, quality build and desirable facilities. The first of a new series from Custom Line, a member of the Ferretti Group, IV Dreams impressed the judges with its modern exterior styling, whose flowing lines incorporated large outdoor areas on the sundeck and foredeck. IV Dreams has four ensuite cabins – two doubles and two twins – each equipped with a Pullman berth, providing high-quality accommodation for guests. Additionally, the judges were impressed by the beach club that doubles as a tender garage and the well-designed crew quarters.

Semi-Displacement or Planning Motor Yachts Below 500GT (35m and Above): Mangusta Gransport 45 (45.3m) The 45.3m yacht provides excellent seagoing comfort and an extremely long range of 4,850 nautical miles. The yacht’s extensive deck areas were admired for the good use made of every square metre, while the beach club stern, with its three openings to the sea, was seen as most desirable. Large windows in the main saloon, some opening to the side decks, made for another light and airy space, with good connectivity to the surrounding seascape.

boat international world superyacht awards

Displacement Motor Yachts Below 499GT (30m to 34.9m): The Beast The grey camouflage paintwork of this vessel suggests a small warship, perhaps a patrol boat, but this disguise was just one element of the owner’s detailed specification. Despite its forbidding, military exterior style, The Beast boasts deck spaces tailored for leisurely outdoor living, while concealing a luxurious fully featured interior. As an enthusiastic sport fisherman, the owner’s key requirement called for the ability to carry, and safely launch, a 13m, 19-tonne sport fishing vessel. The judges were also impressed with the launching system for the sport fishing boat, with a safe two-point lift provided by a pair of large knuckle-cranes.

Displacement Motor Yachts Below 499GT (40m and Above): Bintador (49.9m) Bintador was recognised for her modern exterior styling, practical layout of its decks and interior and the manner in which its interior volume was equitably shared between guest and crew areas. Bintador ’s fuel economy also impressed the judges – a result of a refined hull shape and her being fitted with two 895kW diesels that are significantly smaller than those of her competitors. She is, nevertheless, able to reach 18 knots – a higher speed than her competitors by a clear 2 knots – because of her 300kW electric motors.

Displacement Motor Yachts Between 500GT and 999GT: Najiba (58m) Built at Feadship in Holland, with naval architecture and styling from Philippe Briand and his Vitruvius Yachts brand, Najiba ’s numbers are phenomenal for a 58m yacht. Her top speed of 17-knots and her economical fuel burn at 12-knots demonstrated an extremely efficient hull design. Najiba ’s interior layout, was considered fresh and innovative, particularly the yacht’s main entrance from the stern platform that rises up a central stairway from a reception area to the main deck aft. From here, arriving guests pass directly into the main saloon, a room that provides their first introduction to the much-admired work of the yacht’s Paris-based interior designer, Studio Liaigre.

boat international world superyacht awards

Displacement Motor Yachts Between 1,000GT and 1,499GT: Metis (63m) The novel interior layout of Metis was designed to suit the exact needs of her owner, while meeting all of the modern design trends, including interiors with such good external visibility that they are at one with the surrounding seascapes. The beach club also achieves this connection, with its comfortable lounge and bar opening directly to the sea through three huge fold down hull openings – a design unhindered by any need to store tenders in the same area. Instead, the tenders are kept in a garage forward on the main deck between the helipad above and crew quarters beneath.

Displacement Motor Yachts Between 1,500GT and 1,999GT and Motor Yacht of the Year: Pi (77.3m) Bordering on ‘perfection’ with its harmonious Zen minimalism, seen in both its interior and exterior, the judges commended Pi ’s remarkable build quality, superb design and innovation. Built by Feadship, the judges decided its incorporation of floor-to-ceiling windows without mullions, to create the owners’ dream of a main saloon that is truly at one with the exterior, was exceptional design. For the judges, the icing on the cake was the detail and harmony of every interior element and Feadship’s perfect quality of construction.

Displacement Motor Yachts Between 2,000GT and 4,999GT: Lady S (93m) Lady S , built by Feadship, features elegant exterior design by Michael Leach and interiors by Reymond Langton. The judges admired the yacht’s practical features, luxurious furniture and innovative layout, as well as features such as fire-pits on two levels and the largest sliding glass doors seen on any yacht. Moving to the interior, the judges noted the light that flooded through huge windows into the elegant living areas and her many special features, including a large gym on the bridge deck with expansive 180-degree views and a stunning beach club, as well as the only Dolby 3D IMAX cinema ever installed on a superyacht.

boat international world superyacht awards

Displacement Motor Yachts 5,000GT and Above: Flying Fox At 136m, Flying Fox contains a beautiful, neutrally toned interior featuring dining tables for 22, a plant-filled double-height saloon, a winter garden observation saloon, and a world-beating spa and water sports centre set over two decks incorporating the first cryo-sauna seen on a yacht. The judges considered her to be an exceptional vessel, not only in technical achievement, but also for her owner and guest facilities, interior layout and extremely high quality of construction.

Voyager’s Award: Dorothea III Starting in Fort Lauderdale in January 2018, Dorothea III , a 45m Cheoy Lee motor yacht designed by Ron Holland, owned by Steven and Dorothea Green and captained by John Crupi, completed a 34,965-mile voyage, taking in the North and South Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans. The voyage is particularly notable not only for its huge range but also for acts of philanthropy that raised $28,000 for humanitarian causes along the way.

The yacht, named after the mathematical theory Mike Lynch used to make his millions in the tech industry, foundered in the small hours of Monday morning.

Key among potential reasons for the loss of the vessel will be its most striking feature – the aluminium mast.

Four British personnel from the Marine Accident Investigation Branch are on their way to Palermo to carry out a preliminary assessment.

There are also theories that hot overnight temperatures of 27C (80C) could have prompted passengers to leave portholes and windows open – hastening the sinking when the high winds hit.

Launched in 2008 by Perini Navi, Bayesian is one of the 50 largest sailing yachts in the world and her mammoth mast supported a total sail area of almost 32,000 sq ft.

Bayesian had the tallest aluminium mast in the world when it first took to the seas under her former name Salute. The record was overtaken last year when Jeff Bezos, the Amazon billionaire launched his yacht, Koru.

Koru’s masts stretch to 278ft tall according to Boat International magazine.

Tom Sharpe, a former Royal Navy commander and warship captain, said initial reports from survivors and witnesses suggested “that the weather was sufficiently violent to cause her to capsize at anchor”.

Weather reports from Palermo airport, 12 miles west of the yacht, suggest that at about 4am, winds switched from a gentle south-westerly breeze to gusts of 40mph, with temperatures dropping.

Local newspapers have described the weather as a tornado and a waterspout, which is a tornado above water.

The pressure of high winds on the mast could have helped tip the boat over in rough seas, experts have suggested.

Mr Sharpe said capsizing seemed “unlikely” to him given the Bayesian’s size “and that boats like that are designed to survive poor weather – unless something failed at the same time like a valve that let water in and made the whole boat unstable”.

He said it was more likely that the Bayesian had “dragged anchor”. Anchors are designed to lodge on rocks on the seabed, but if the seabed is too soft, or weather is so bad that the anchor is dislodged, then a boat can drag its anchor and drift.

If a boat drifts into an obstruction such as a rock or another boat, this can damage the boat by tearing a hole in its side leading to sinking, Mr Sharpe suggested.

The sea bed off Porticello, the Silician harbour nearest to where Bayesian was moored for the night, consists of a mixture of rocky and muddy areas, according to nautical charts reviewed by The Telegraph.

This means the yacht could have dragged anchor if it had been lowered into a soft, muddy patch of seabed.

A captain of another boat anchored nearby said his vessel was hit by abnormally strong winds on Monday morning.

Karsten Borner said the Sir Robert BP was battered by strong gusts in the early hours of the morning but he managed to stabilise the vessel while anchored by using the engine.

He said as they were doing this, they noticed the Bayesian nearby and manoeuvred to avoid hitting it.

“We managed to keep the ship in position, and after the storm was over, we noticed that the ship behind us was gone,” said Capt Borner.

Mr Sharpe said: “From a seamanship point of view, the other boat (Sir Robert BP) coming up on her main engines and using those to keep position around [her own] anchor is what you should do. Yacht anchors are often not that robust and that is the best way to avoid putting too much strain on it and/or dragging.”

An alternative theory is that the weight of the mast led the Bayesian to capsize.

A yacht industry source told The Times that the vessel sank after the weight of her mast took the hull beyond its “down-flooding angle” – the point at which a boat cannot right itself after swinging at a steep angle – meaning water rushed over the sides into the interior.

“The wind toppled the mast, which fell over the side, causing the boat to heel over and take on water, capsize and sink very quickly,” the source said.

This can occur whether the mast snapped off or not.

Sam Jefferson, editor of Sailing Today, told The Telegraph: “She has a very tall, aluminium mast – I believe it is the second tallest aluminium mast in the world – and that would not have helped.

“Many yachts with big masts have carbon masts instead of aluminium as these save on weight and improve stability and performance.

“Stability was obviously the problem in the extremely strong winds she was experiencing and I’d assume the boat was pinned on its side and could not right before it filled up with water.”

Another superyacht expert who asked not to be named told The Telegraph that the mast could have pulled the Bayesian over into capsizing, although he expressed some scepticism, saying sailing yachts are designed to prevent that from happening.

He said the anchor-dragging theory was also a plausible explanation for why the Bayesian sank.

Typically, crews try to anchor in safe spots that are sheltered away from the wind, they said.

The Bayesian was moored just off Porticello, a few miles east of Palermo. Prevailing winds from the north-east may have robbed the vessel of the shelter offered by the Sicilian coast, which lay to the west.

Dr Lynch was reportedly aboard the vessel. His wife, Angela Bacares, is among those rescued but six others, including four Britons, are still missing.

One person, reportedly the yacht’s chef, died in the incident and his body was recovered by rescuers.

The Bayesian’s last refit was in 2020.

The vessel was listed for rent for up to €195,000 (£166,000) a week, according to online charter websites.

The interior featured six cabins – one master, three doubles and two twin rooms – for up to a dozen guests, with the crew occupying separate quarters.

Fitted out in a Japanese style, the interior was styled by the Remi Tessler design house.

Under her former name Salute, the yacht won the Best Exterior prize at the World Superyacht Awards in 2009, and the Best Interior at the International Superyacht Society Awards in 2008.

A coastguard statement issued on Monday morning said the missing passengers were of “British, American and Canadian nationality”.

Camper & Nicholsons, managers of the Bayesian, confirmed the vessel sank at about 4.30am following “severe weather”.

The Italian Coast Guard is leading search and rescue operations, and said on Monday it had safely recovered 15 individuals.

Vessels like Mike Lynch's stricken superyacht are "unsinkable", according to the chief executive of the firm which makes and sells them.

Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, told Sky News there are no flaws with the design and construction of the Bayesian superyacht which capsized in a storm off the coast of Porticello, Sicily, on Monday.

Five bodies were found by divers on Wednesday - taking the number of confirmed dead to six.

The Italian Sea Group also owns the firm that built British tech tycoon Mr Lynch's Bayesian, and Mr Costantino said the vessels "are the safest in the most absolute sense".

News of the sinking left CEO of The Italian Sea Group Giovanni Costantino in ‘sadness on the one hand and disbelief on the other’.

"Being the manufacturer of Perini [boats], I know very well how the boats have always been designed and built," he said.

"And as Perini is a sailing ship... sailing ships are renowned to be the safest ever."

He said their structure and keel made them "unsinkable bodies".

Mr Costantino said news of the sinking "put me in a state of sadness on one side and of disbelief on the other".

"This incident sounds like an unbelievable story, both technically and as a fact," he said.

It is understood Italian prosecutors investigating the incident are continuing to hold interviews with the survivors.

On Tuesday they questioned the captain for more than two hours to help reconstruct what happened and provide useful technical details.

Four British inspectors are also in Porticello and have begun a preliminary assessment of events.

It is understood they will look at all relevant aspects of the incident, including the design, stability, and operation of the vessel. They will also examine the effects of the weather conditions experienced.

Twenty-two people were on board the vessel, 15 of whom were rescued - including Briton Charlotte Golunski and her one-year-old daughter Sofia.

Divers will resume efforts on Thursday morning to bring ashore a body they found earlier. One more person remains missing.
