. There doesn't seem to be many of them out there but from the information I have found they are well built.

Would love any insight.

Review of Young Sun 43

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season.

The boat is equipped with 1041.0 liter fresh water capacity.

The Young Sun 43 is equipped with a long keel. A full keel provide a better directional stability than a similar boat with a fin keel; on the other hand, better directional stability means also that the boat is more difficult to handle in a harbour with less space.

The boat can enter most marinas as the draft is just about 1.68 - 1.78 meter (5.51 - 5.81 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Young Sun 43 is typically equipped with an inboard Perkins diesel engine

The fuel tank has a capacity of 1136.0 liters (300 US gallons, 249 imperial gallons).

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Young Sun 43 is 1.58, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 8.0 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Young Sun 43 is about 267 kg/cm, alternatively 1499 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 267 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 1499 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio) Indicates how fast the boat is in light wind: - Cruising Boats have ratios 10-15 - Cruiser-Racers have ratios 16-20 - Racers have ratios above 20 - High-Performance Racers have ratios above 24 Sail-area/displacement ratio (SA/D ratio): 19.27

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 29m 2 (312 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

If you need to renew parts of your running rig and is not quite sure of the dimensions, you may find the estimates computed below useful.

UsageLengthDiameter
Jib sheet 13.0 m(42.7 feet)16 mm(5/8 inch)
Genoa sheet13.0 m(42.7 feet)16 mm(5/8 inch)
Mainsheet 32.5 m(106.7 feet)16 mm(5/8 inch)
Spinnaker sheet28.6 m(93.9 feet)16 mm(5/8 inch)

This section is reserved boat owner's modifications, improvements, etc. Here you might find (or contribute with) inspiration for your boat.

Do you have changes/improvements you would like to share? Upload a photo and describe what you have done.

We are always looking for new photos. If you can contribute with photos for Young Sun 43 it would be a great help.

Young sun 43

The young sun 43 is a 42.67ft cutter designed by ron amy and built in fiberglass by young sun (taiwan) since 1978..

The Young sun 43 is a heavy sailboat which is a reasonably good performer. It is reasonably stable / stiff and has an excellent righting capability if capsized. It is best suited as a heavy bluewater cruising boat. The fuel capacity is excellent. There is an excellent water supply range.

Sunflower is a Young 43, designed by the well known and respected NZ designer, Jim Young.

The Young 43’s were designed and built in Auckland, NZ. They were designed as a “Luxury Cruising Boat”, by Jim Young, although they were never mass produced, each one was customised to the owners specs, whilst retaining the main excellent basic design features. Young 43’s have circumnavigated many  times, and we have met several in our travels. They are serious blue water cruising boats.

We are only the 4th owners and have had the pleasure of calling Sunflower our permanent home since 2003. We have sailed many thousands of miles in her, always safely and snugly regardless of   weather or sea conditions. Like her previous owners we have kept her in tip top condition and regularly upgraded her electronics to the  current state of the art options. We regard good food as a necessity whether at sea or on shore, so Sunflower’s galley has been upgraded with Corian tops and sinks as well as a top of the range stove. Along with a microwave and bread maker there is a large freezer and fridge which allows for storage of 3 months worth of meats and meals for 2 people.

Storage on board is exceptional with not a spare inch wasted and most of it easily accessible. Sunflower has been set up as a comfortable home for 2 people although we have regularly hosted guests in the double V berth   which has it’s own dressing area and head. We enjoy our comfort so there is a slim line TV which folds up against the ceiling when not in use, we have Carframo fans in each bedroom, the forward head and 2 in the living area, there are also a couple of portables which plug into 12 volt sockets if extra cooling is required in the cockpit. There is a twin tub washing   machine on board which stows comfortably in the ‘tunnel’ between the main salon and master bedroom in the rear. It is very lightweight and is easily moved in to the main shower area for use. A 50 litre per hour Echotec water maker ensures no rationing of shower or any water! A double filtration system means our drinking water tastes better than most bottled water.

Construction is very solid with fibre glass below the waterline and balsa core above the waterline. The balsa core provides excellent sound and temperature insulation. There is a waterproof crash bulkhead at the bow.

The centre cockpit design features an original factory- built hard dodger with fully enclosed canvas bimini. The fully enclosed cockpit means extra comfort while under way and on anchor. There is no need to wear wet- weather gear while sailing as all sail handling is done from within the cockpit. An electric winch to makes handling of the boom furling main and head sail easy. The fully enclosed cockpit also makes an extra room on anchor, during wet weather etc. As well as being very safe with it’s high combing, the centre cockpit design also allows very easy access to both sides of the engine.

In 2014 the hull was taken back to the gel coat, primed and then painted with 6 coats of International 2 part paint. Below the waterline all old anti fouling was removed back to the gel coat, (no osmosis found) sealed, primed and 2 coats of Seahawk anti fouling applied. Also the teal deck   stripe was repainted with 2 part paint.

There is an extensive list of spares and extra equipment on the separate page.

Sunflower is being sold as a fully equipped, world cruising home. We will leave all galley equipment, electronics and linens   as required. Sunflower is ideally located in Fethiye Turkey. There are lovely sheltered cruising grounds in which to familiarise yourself with your new boat then you have the whole Med at your disposal   to begin your cruising adventures.

As we have a villa here in Turkey, we can assist with your inspection visit and move onto the boat.

Difference between Spindrift and Young Sun

young 43 yacht review

  • Add to quote

We are looking at a Young Sun and notice the similarity to the Spindrift. In looking it seems the Spindrifts were made first and then the Young Suns. We are thinking the Young Suns are copies of the Spindrifts. Is this so. Does anyone have any information on either boat? I have googled and not found much to go on. Thanks DaddyHobbit

Daddyhobbit - which Spindrift/Young Sun are you talking about? I'm only famiiar with some of the history of the Ron Amy-designed Spindrift 43 (one of my dream boats...).

Differences as I see it We are looking at a YS 43 Pilot House. If you look at the Spindrift 43 Pilot House they are quite similar. The Yachtworld listings show Army as designer on both. However, it appears that the Spindrifts were manufactured a few years before the Young Sun. There are some subtle differences in the layout the Spindrifts have the galley up instead of down as in the YS. The forward cabin has a smaller starboard berth (if you want to call it that) in the Spindrift where the YS has a double to port and a single to starboard. I hope this makes my post clearer. I am still trying to find out more about the YS. We are about to make an offer. I like the YS from what we have seen. I would like some input from the group to validate my position. Thanks DH

young 43 yacht review

I had a serious look at the YS43 a year or so back and as far as I could ascertain the Spindrift and the YS are the same design from different yards. It was a while back and my memory is not the best but the YSs have , shall we say, issues pertaining to the deck cores and the laid teak. Be careful. Also, if memory serves me, the engine is in the bilge. That kind of bothers me.

I did some research a few years ago on these Ron Amy-designed boats, as I was looking at buying a Landfall 39 in good condition. A popular opinion regarding the design itself was that Amy took an original William Garden design and altered it. The rest of what I gathered, from internet research to speaking with brokers/delivery skippers, etc., is that the Spindrifts were the best built of all the variants. The Landfall 39s (which I believe is the same boat using the LOD rather than the LOA with the bow sprit) are considered the most poorly built, though that does not mean they are bad boats. Even so, the average asking price of a Landfall vs. a Spindrift are dramatically different. The Landfalls, which I recall were built first, have the galley up and starboard. It wasn't until I came across the Spindrift that I ever saw the galley down (with a nav station opposite). Most Spindrifts I have seen have this layout. I also believe, and someone correct me if I am wrong, that the Spindrifts were built by Formosa, and the Young Suns built by Ta Chaio. Or maybe it's the other way around... Anyway, I personally know of two Spindrift 43s cruising the world. One is owned by a contributing writer for Lats & Atts magazine and is in Panama or Columbia by now, the other I saw in Antigua for the LAts & Atts int'l cruiser's party in May of '06. Both owners absolutely love their boats, with the latter having survived a pretty bad hurricane bashing. I hope you end up getting one, Daddyhobbit. They're awesome cruising boats. Oh, and please let us know if you find out more information or have corrections to what I think I know...

Thanks Moonfish Moonfish Thanks that was more information than we had. We are making an offer. I am somewhat concerned as we went down to BVI to see boat and all that I noticed was that there is some blistering above the water line. The bottom has been barrier coated so I assume that was to fix blistering. I am sure that it will come out in the survey. We like the boat it is just the right size for us (wife, myself, and cat) so the next step is the offer. If they accept it we will be living aboard her, otherwise we will stay on dryland until something similar comes up. If we find out any other information we will let you know. Daddy Hobbit

1978 Young 43

Here’s an opportunity to own one of Jim Youngs greatest designs, the Young 43

Cherished by her owner, for 27 years, she is now awaiting new sailing adventures.

The Young 43 is equally at home cruising the coast or taking on the challenge that is Blue Water sailing.

Accommodation is available for up to eight with a private double cabin aft with ensuite and an additional head forward to cater for guests. Powered by an ever reliable 70hp Ford diesel engine, she will slip through the water at 7 knots all day long if required. She has a stylish solid dodger that not only looks great, but it is also completely functional, keeping all those onboard warm, and dry in the toughest conditions. It's a NZ designed and built boat.  I am looking to buy one but there is very little information out there.  Was hoping the local community might have some knowledge about it.

Hull came off the Young 41 Jipcho, with a widened transom. Most built over period 1974-79,  1 or 2 more in the early 80's. Balsa cored GRP hull and decks. Majority were sloop rigged but also a couple of ketches around. Most had a shallow draft, 1.5m keel. Sailed alot of miles including several circumnavigations.

There was a Sea Spray Boat Test, I think in 1974 (I have the issue) and design discussed in Jim's memoirs, "Jim Young - designer, Builder, Sailor"

Just PM'd you his contact email, he is happy to assist

Have done several offshore passages in one. Great sea boat - very capable in snotty whether. Have been in sustained 50kn winds and felt safe.

My memory is that it didn't point that well and made a fair bit of leeway.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

I am very impressed with the dialog on this site. We are looking to buy a boat to cruise the ICW around our home on the Mississipi Gulf Coast and occasionally go out into the gulf. We are very impressed with the Hatteras 43 MY. Our considerations include length over 40 feet, cost around 100k, 4 ft or less draft, keel for good opearation at displacement speed and some prop protection when you touch bottom. Would like to be able to fish from it, but prefer not to climb a tall ladder to reach the helm and do like easy access to the forward deck. Is this a good choice? are there other Hatteras I should consider? Any advantages/disadvangeage with the available 3208TA vs 671TI in this boat where most operation would be at displacement speed. Would appreciate your thoughts or suggestions. Vincent

Re: 43 Motoryacht Pros/Cons

We bought our 43' 8 years ago and live full time on it. If you look at my website you can see a pic of it. It's big enought to be comfy on, not too big to drive and dock by yourself and is stingy on fuel use. On the other hand, it likes to roll when in the ocean and everything better be secured before hand. We have 6-71N's which is all you would need. Pretty much bullet proof and at today's fuel prices..... We usually cruise in the 7-9 kt range as the "hull speed" is 8.8 kts and fuel use goes up FAST at anything over those speeds. "IF I had it to do over again....." I would of gone for the 48' or 53'. But my money situation limited me to the 43'. But I would rather have a 43' HATTERAS than have a bigger boat made from 99% of the other boat builders out there.

My 43 Double Cabin is "Stabalized"..Therefore very little roll. It has 6V92 power. 1.5 npg at hull speeds. Plenty of power to run up to 22 knots if desired. Docking single handed is easy. Aft cockpit heated and air conditioned. Plenty space for extended stays onboard. Flybridge and lower helm. Use the lower mostly. Great all weather yacht.

I guess the first question is 43DC or 43MY? The later MY is more of a "sundeck" style based on the original 43DC hull. Which of these are you considering?

You wil love it for the comments already stated.
You will love it for the comments already stated. We bought ours, a 1972 without a flying bridge, in 1999 in Sandusky OH. We lived on it summers with 5 children and boated throughout New York State, Lake Ontario and lake Erie. Brought it from Plattsburg to Fort Lauderdale in 2004 without a hitch. We liked it because there is more room that a Trawler, less expensive, easy on fuel and fun to work on with lots of head room. We have not had any major problems. We still have origional power 8V53Ns, Generator, Fridge and AC. The flush deck is extreamly safe as everyone grows older and the hardtop will be an envy of most all boat owners. The teak rails are a litle bit of work but they give you a unique historical look that will get lots of attention as you travel. When the kids were teenagers we did a lot of diving off the boat in the St Lawrence River. The boat did not do well diving in South Florida; to much rolling and pitching in the currents and I don't see it as a fishing boat. Our next project will be a new generator and AC. Though it does roll a little, if you give it some fuel the bow will come up and you can push through most anything. Also you can find one in great shape, most people keep them for a long time and take good care of them. Good Luck!

A good friend is selling his beloved 1976 43DC with 6-71N's. It was a one-owner fresh water boat when he bought it 8 yrs ago. His plans have changed and he has bought a smaller boat so this one can be had for a SONG (under $100k)! New teak & Holly (real wood, tongue & groove) floors, new genset, etc. Email me at [email protected] and I will give you his direct number. Boat is located on the Gulf Coast.

You mentioned a 43MY, but as Sky pointed out, there is also a 43DC, a different boat. Neither will be a good fishing boat. However there are cockpit models of the 48MY which provide a nice compromise. Decent cockpit with a large interior and a nice sundeck (but not as big as the three cabin version). Also a bit more beam than the 43, and economical at displacement speed. There are performance data on the 48MY in the three cabin version on this web site so you can get fuel burn info etc. If you are going to run slow, look for stabilizers. They don't help while drift fishing though. Also I've heard the ER is tight on the 43MY. You need to consider where that is an issue for you. The 48 has lots of ER space. Bob

In the 43, 44, 48 YF range engine rooms are tight...but manageable...Prop protection with twin screw and shallow keels is negligible so if you plan on bumping and grinding, you'll do better with a deep keel single screw boat...in trade you'll likely give up some interior room...I'm not an expert, but I thought nearly all the older 43's came with 671 naturals not TI's..but that may be dependent on year of mfg... The 43's don't have a cockpit, but the 48 YF does...that's what I have and I love the cockpit for dingy storage across the stern and easy dinghy access via a transom door and swim platform...but the climb to the flybridge is HIGH....on the 43's and 48's access from the bridge deck steering station to the forward deck is level and easy...but if you have a remote control anchor winch, you shouldn't need to get back and forth often except to enjoy evening sunsets or early morning sunrises.... Look here at Sam's for Hatts for sale....
Rob Brueckner former 1972 48ft YF, 'Lazy Days' Boating isn't a matter of life and death: it's more important than that.
How could I of forgotten about the ER on my 43'.. IT IS A ROYAL PITA. I have to remove two floor panals just to get to either battery bank. It is not a fun place to play.

Oprah Winfrey speaks during the Democratic National Convention Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2024, at the United Center

young 43 yacht review

Full prepared remarks of Oprah Winfrey on Wednesday at the Democratic National Convention.

Good evening, everybody! Who says you can’t go home again?

After watching the Obamas last night, that was some epic fire, was it not? We are so fired up, we cannot wait to leave here and do something! And what we are going to do is select Kamala Harris as the next president of the United States!

I am so honored to have been asked to speak on tonight’s theme about what matters the most to me, to you, and all of us Americans. Freedom.

There are people who want you to see our country as a nation of us against them. People who want to scare you. Who want to rule you. People who would have you believe that books are dangerous. And assault rifles are safe.

That that there was a right way to worship and a wrong way to love. People who seek first to divide, and then to conquer. But here is the thing. When we stand together, it is impossible to conquer us.

In the words of an extraordinary American, the late Congressman John Lewis, no matter what ship our ancestors arrived on, we are all in the same boat now.

He knew very well how far this country has come because he was one of the brilliant Americans who helped get us to where we are. But he also knew that the work is not done. The work will never be done, because freedom is not free.

America is an ongoing project. It requires commitment, it requires being open to the hard work and to the heart work of democracy.

And every now and then, it requires standing up to life’s bullies. I know this. I have lived in Mississippi. In Tennessee. In Wisconsin. Maryland. Indiana. Florida. Hawaii. Colorado. California. And sweet home Chicago, Illinois!

I have actually traveled this country from the redwood forests to the gulf stream waters. I have seen racism and sexism and income inequality and division.

I have not only seen it, at times, I have been on the receiving end of it. But more often than not, what I have witnessed and experienced are human beings, both conservative and liberal, who may not agree with each other, but who still will help you in a heartbeat if you are in trouble.

These are the people who make me proud to say that I am an American. They are the best of America. And despite what some would have you think, we are not so different from our neighbors.

When a house is on fire, we do not ask about the homeowners race or religion. We do not wonder who their partner is or how they voted. No. We just try to do the best we can to save them. And if the place happens to belong to a childless cat lady — we tried to get the cat out, too. Because we are a country of people who work hard for the money.

We wish our brothers and sisters well and we pray for peace. We know all the old tricks and tropes designed to distract us from what actually matters.

But we on — we are beyond ridiculous tweets and lies and foolery. These are complicated times, people, and they require adult conversation.

And I welcome those conversations, because civilized debate is vital to democracy, and it is the best of America.

Now over the last couple of nights, we have all seen brave people walk onto the stage and share their most private pain. Amanda, Josh, Caitlin, and Hadley, told us their stories of rape and incest. The near death experiences from having the state deny them the abortion their doctor explained was medically necessary.

And they told us these things for one reason, and that is to keep what happened to them from happening to anybody else because if you do not have autonomy over this, if you cannot control when and how you choose to bring your children into this world and how they are raised and supported, there is no American dream.

The women and men who are battling to keep us from going back to a time of desperation and shame and stone cold fear, they are the new freedom fighters. And make no mistake, they are the best of America.

I want to talk now about somebody who is not with us tonight. Tessie Prevost Williams was born in New Orleans not long after the Supreme Court ruled that segregated public schools were unconstitutional. That was in 1954, same year I was born.

But I did not have to head to first grade with a U. S. Marshal by my side at an all-white school. When I go to school, the building was not empty like it was for Tessie.

Rather than allowing the daughter to be integrated, parents pulled their kids out of the school, leaving only Tessie and two other little black girls, Gail and Leona, to sit in a classroom with the windows papered over to block snipers from attacking their six-year-old bodies.

Tessie passed away six weeks ago. And I tell this story to honor her tonight. Because she — like Ruby Bridges and her friends Leona and Gail, the New Orleans Four, as they were called, broke barriers and paid dearly for it.

But it was the great courage of women like Tessie that paved the way for another young girl, who, nine years later, became part of the second class to integrate in public schools in Berkeley, California.

And it seems to me that at school and at home, somebody did a beautiful job of showing this young girl how to challenge the people at the top and empower the people at the bottom.

They showed her how to look at the world and see not just what is, but what can be. They instilled in her a passion for justice and freedom and the glorious fighting spirit necessary to pursue that passion.

And very soon, very soon we are going to be teaching our daughters and sons about how this child of an Indian mother and Jamaican father, two idealistic and energetic immigrants, — how this child grew up to become the 47th president of the United States! That is the best of America!

Let me tell you this. This election is not about us and them. It is about you and me.

And what we want our futures to look like. There are choices to be made when we cast our ballot. Now there is a certain candidate that says we only have to go to the polls just one time and then we will never have to do it again.

You know what? You are looking at a registered independent who is proud to vote again and again and again because I am an American and that is what Americans do.

Voting is the best of America. And I have always, since I was eligible to vote, I have always voted by values. And that is what is needed in this election, now more than ever.

So I am calling on all you independents and all you undecideds. You know this is true. You know I am telling you the truth. That values and character matter most of all. In leadership and in life.

And more than anything, you know this is true, that decency and respect are on the ballot in 2024.

And just plain common sense. Common sense tells you that Kamala Harris and Tim Walz can give us decency and respect. They are the ones to give it to us.

So. We are Americans. Let us choose loyalty to the constitution over loyalty to any individual. Because that is the best of America. And let us choose optimism over cynicism. Because that is the best of America. And let us choose inclusion over retribution, common sense over nonsense. Because that is the best of America!

And let us choose the sweet promise of tomorrow over the bitter return to yesterday. We will not go back. We won’t be sent back, pushed back, kicked back, we are not going back.

Let us choose truth. Let us choose honor. Let us choose jooooooooooooy! Because that is the best of America!

But more than anything else, let us choose freedom. Why? Because that is the best of America!

We are all Americans, and together, let us all choose Kamalaaaaaaaa Haaaaaaaarris! Thank you, Chicago!

If you look at the Spindrift 43 Pilot House they are quite similar. The Yachtworld listings show Army as designer on both.
