This is home to the Great Barrier Reef, the world’s largest reef eco-system, offering unparalleled opportunities for sublime cruising and thrilling underwater discovery. Covering an area seven times larger than the United Kingdom, the possibilities in Queensland for superyacht charters are immense.

While the Great Barrier Reef stands out as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, Queensland is also blessed with vibrant city experiences and sensational rainforest escapades, making this region a truly inexhaustible source of adventure. This is the all-encompassing destination for superyachts, ripe for luxury escapes and supported by world-class superyacht infrastructure. It is no wonder that so many superyachts choose Queensland as their base for exploring the South Pacific.

Great Barrier Reef & Whitsundays

The Great Barrier Reef is Australia’s most precious gift to the world and epitomises the adventurous spirit of superyacht charters. This yachting utopia stretches for 2,300 km along Queensland’s glorious coastline, and boasts over 3,000 individual reef systems and coral cays. For visiting superyachts, the sheer diversity of reefs provides experiences like no other. Divers and snorkelers revel in this underwater Eden, with over 600 types of hard and soft coral to uncover, along with 1,626 different species of fish to encounter.

There is no greater destination for barefoot island-hopping adventures than the Great Barrier Reef. Superyachts provide an opulent base from which to explore 600 continental islands, each glowing with its own unique natural landscape. In the northern region of the Great Barrier Reef, Lizard Island is a sumptuous luxury resort surrounded by mesmerising natural beauty. Lizard Island is a popular start or end point for a charter through the exhilarating ribbon reefs, with the delightful seaside town of Port Douglas at the other end.

Further south, The Whitsundays are one of the true yachting pleasures of the world, with 74 glorious white-sand islands surrounded by sparkling turquoise waters. This is the pinnacle of beach bliss and laid-back island glamour, where guests can either delve into the awe-inspiring waters or unwind in hedonistic resorts on Hamilton Island and Airlie Beach. The pristine natural surroundings of the Whitsundays offer an idyllic superyacht retreat, though the area is certainly packed full of adrenaline-pumping water sports activities. Some of the most enchanting dive and snorkel sites in Australia are found in the Whitsundays, and so too is the iconic Heart Reef.

City Thrills

Superyachts are welcomed into Queensland’s thriving cities, from the state capital of Brisbane up to the charming city of Cairns. These cities act as phenomenal bases to explore Queensland’s sun-drenched coastline and glistening cruising grounds, and they each offer something spectacularly unique.

Cairns is a major superyacht homeport for the Asia Pacific region, with close proximity to the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef but also to the South Pacific islands beyond. Here you will find fantastic superyacht facilities, exquisite restaurants and luxury hotels throughout the city which allow for a seamless transition to land. With no overbearing high-rise buildings, Cairns has the aesthetic of a quaint coastal town and its relaxing atmosphere enables guests to detach from the stresses of the outside world. Cairns offers fascinating on land activities to enhance your experience of Australia, notably the Daintree Rainforest and captivating Aboriginal tours.

In South East Queensland, Brisbane and the Gold Coast are well established as superyacht hotspots. Not only do they boast incredible infrastructure, but the surrounding area is filled with islands and secluded beaches to enjoy. The cosmopolitan city of Brisbane boasts a perfect balance between modern city luxuries and relaxing open green spaces, with an intriguing culture to immerse yourself in. Brisbane has a packed calendar of major sporting events, musical performances and cutting-edge theatre to explore, and there is also plenty of thrilling cruising opportunities in the surrounding area. Moreton Bay is a boating hub adored by locals and international visitors alike, while North Stradbroke and Fraser Islands also provide fabulous retreats where you can embrace the outdoors in a stunning setting.

The Gold Coast presents superyachts with the ideal balance of luxury city amenities and beach glamour. Its renowned tourist hub of Surfers Paradise is dotted with fine dining restaurants and lively bars, many overlooking its immaculate coastline. The southern beaches of the Gold Coast provide a more laid-back, boho atmosphere where surfers flock to make the most of this sublime environment. Behind the glittering sands is an enthralling hinterland, less than an hour from the city. Incredible treks through this undisturbed natural Eden lead to magical waterfalls, providing a splendid contrast after days spent at sea. Along the Spit to the north of the Gold Coast are some of the largest marina facilities in Australia, including Southport Yacht Club – a favourite for visiting superyachts.

Rainforest and Hinterland Adventures

The natural beauty of Queensland certainly doesn’t stop with its kaleidoscopic reef experiences. Cairns is not just a gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, but also the UNESCO Heritage listed Daintree Rainforest. The Daintree offers an eclectic mix of activities and encounters, from ATV tours through the rainforest to enlightening Aboriginal tours of the ancient land. Queensland’s strength in diverse experiences is second to none, and exploring the Sunshine State you will feed your hunger for adventure.

The Gold Coast hinterland is teeming with diverse flora and fauna, with Lamington and Springbrook National Parks offering a retreat into a natural paradise. The volcanic landscape of Springbrook is as enthralling as it gets for land-based adventures, characterised by gorges, rocky outcrops and magical waterfalls.

Noosa, on the Sunshine Coast, is Australia’s relaxation capital. This subtropical resort town is known for its spectacular coastal scenery and the beautiful Noosa National Park. In Noosa, you can embrace all things wild as you take in the awe-inspiring scenery and come across native Australian plants and wildlife. Along Noosa’s dramatic headland are the Fairy Pools, natural saltwater pools where visitors can take a plunge into azure waters.

Superyacht Infrastructure

Queensland is a major superyacht hub for the Asia Pacific region, with world-class marina and shipyard facilities which attract superyachts from all over the world. Cairns Marlin Marina and Southport Yacht Club have some of the largest berthing facilities in Australia, while Queensland is also a mecca for refit and maintenance. The marine infrastructure in Queensland makes this an ideal destination for superyachts to stay long-term.

Yachting Queensland

In 2016 Australian Sailing (AS) and the State and Territory Associations (MYA’s) agreed to embark on a process to improve the national governance structure of sailing for the long term good of the whole of the sport.

Known as “One Sailing”, AS and the MYA’s committed to provide to sailing in Australia a legal, governance and management framework that optimises the prospects of the success of the sport. As a result of this, it is Australian Sailing’s responsibility to deliver all services that were previously performed by the state bodies.

So what are you waiting for? Set sail today!

Sail away to your next adventure with our range of advanced sailing courses! Advanced sailors can prep and take a Yachtmaster exam to test their skippering ability or partake in an RYA training centre Coastal Skipper course, each over a five-day block.

For those who have a passion for the open waters, take on the fast-track sailing lessons courses. These courses will have you sailing and navigating the seas in no time. We were lucky enough to spend a day with Jamie on Moreton bay and can’t speak highly enough about it. Three of us with varied previous experience of sailing joined with a father and son to share in a day of learning the ropes. The day was tailored to our varied needs and at all times we were able to ask questions and glean experience from Jamie’s wealth of knowledge. We would highly recommend signing up for a course if you’re interested in getting back on the water after a hiatus. Thanks so much guys! It was a priceless day!

A few words from some of our happy customers

yachting queensland

The Ackinclose Family

This was the holiday of a lifetime. When we returned, we immediately got off the boat and walked straight into the office to book again for the following year.

We had an absolute blast. And really the boat was the centre piece of that. It was everything we could have asked for; spacious, luxurious, comfortable, plenty of water storage and fridge/freezer space, room to spread out, great cooking facilities, plenty of lounging areas and a hot shower and comfy bed at the end of every day.

Perhaps most importantly it allowed us to ‘choose our own adventure’! This holiday had it all…. turquoise waters, swimming, snorkeling, fishing, isolated beaches, white sand, incredible walks, beach combing, whales, dolphins, turtles, tropical fish, and some high sea adventures! It’s one thing to visit the Whitsundays, it’s another altogether to holiday ON the Whitsundays. Being on the water 24/7 is an experience unlike any other… it was pure joy!

We loved being on our own (the perfect covid safe holiday really!), enjoying each others company and everyday being an adventure. Not to mention relaxing and unwinding with the most amazing scenery and sunsets. This is a holiday you and your children will remember forever!

Billy & Friends

Thank you again to the Whitsunday Escape Crew for another amazing experience in the magnificent Whitsundays. We had a wonderful 10 days onboard the Seawind 1260 Volare, which kicked off with a great brief by Amee who was very thorough and very knowledgeable about operating Volare safely.

Throughout the charter the support from the ops team is first rate. Whether you want to know where the best place to overnight for the conditions, or if you need some advice about the boat, they will always go the extra mile to ensure you have the best holiday possible. Shoutout to Jordans mobile outboard repairs that paid us a quick visit in Stonehaven to help sort us out.

The absolute highlight for this trip was the time we had all of Whitehaven Beach entirely to ourselves for a few hours on a sunny afternoon. A magical moment that is unlikely to be repeated.

We’re already booked in for our next charter with Whitsunday Escape over Christmas and can’t wait to get back up there.

The Patel Family

We were first time ‘bare boaters’ and a little nervous about going out to sea in a million-dollar catamaran but Whitsunday Escape couldn’t have been more helpful providing boating information and ensuring we had the prerequisite knowledge.

Big thanks to Lachy for his ‘pep talk’ to my crew before we set off.

Best family holiday ever and we loved every minute.

Yachting in Queensland

By JOL Admin | 8 October 2008

Yachting as a sport and pastime has long been popular in Queensland with interstate races for craft twenty-two feet and under being sailed almost continuously over the last sixty years. With the formation of the Queensland Cruising Yacht Club in 1948 blue water yacht racing and cruising was also commenced and has become increasingly popular.

The Brisbane to Gladstone yacht race has also been popular, being held annually since 1949.  The race takes place each Easter on Good Friday, with the starting line just offshore from Shorncliffe Pier. Many don’t know that the Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race has weathered worse storms than the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. Cyclone Emily caused havoc as winds reached up to 96 knots during the 1972 race. There were no casualties but only five of the 25 race starters finished the race that year.

Whitsunday Rent A Yacht

Where to charter a yacht in Queensland

Check availability, charter a yacht in queensland, australia's tropical state and home to one of the best sailing destinations in the world, the whitsundays..

If you’re looking to charter a yacht in Queensland, look no further than hiring a bareboat and sailing the Whitsundays.

Chartering a yacht in Queensland’s Whitsunday Islands and skippering it with your friends and family is the holiday of a lifetime. It’s called a bareboat charter, which means the renter is responsible for providing th crew, fuel, food and supplies. Hire a boat to suit your group’s needs, and then pick where you want to go, enjoying the freedom to explore at your own pace.

A boat license is not needed to hire a bareboat in the Whitsundays. We go into this below in the FAQs.

The ultimate place for a Queensland yacht charter in the Whitsundays

Comparable to the Greek Islands and Croatia, Queensland’s Whitsunday Islands are a world-class sailing destination.

Located in a sub-tropical climate of 74 pristine islands, the Whitsundays are protected by the outer Great Barrier Reef, which stops large ocean swells. Sailing conditions are generally calm, with steady southeast trade winds most of the year.

The Islands themselves are mostly uninhabited, with many holding National Park status. There are beaches and secret coves to explore, with over 40 anchorages options giving plenty of options for a protected place to spend the night.

Your yacht charter can be as adventurous or relaxing as you would like. Many people enjoy exploring the beaches, snorkelling and checking out some of the island’s walking trails. Adventure lovers can also experience scuba diving, sailing, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding and fishing.

The Whitsunday Islands are home to Whitehaven Beach, one of the most famous beaches in the world. When you charter a yacht, you can see this world-class wonder in the morning or evening away from day tours.

Yacht charter guests can access some island resorts while using their boat as accommodation. Hamilton Island, Daydream Island, Palm Bay Resort and Hayman Island have various options to hire a mooring or pull up a berth and access the resort’s facilities, restaurants, attractions and pools.

Recent guests, The Travelling Buckinghams share their tips and experience sailing the Whitsundays for the first time.

FAQs about chartering a yacht in Queensland

What is the best time of year to charter a yacht in queensland.

The Whitsunday Islands are a sub-tropical climate with a wet and dry season. The wet season runs from  December to March and the dry season runs from June to August.

The best sailing conditions are considered to be in August and September.

It’s possible to sail the Whitsundays at any time of year, with each season having its own advantages. For example, the wet season has waterfalls and fewer crowds, whereas the dry season coincides with whale’s migrating to the area.

Do I need a license for a Queensland yacht charter?

Queensland’s Whitsundays is one of the only places in the world where you do not need a boat license to hire a yacht without a professional skipper.

Before your charter, you will be given an extensive training session to ensure you can operate the boat safely. If your briefer feels you need additional training or a guide, they will advise you during the session. We also recommend that when making your booking, you express any concerns about your experience to our reservation staff.

How much does a Queensland yacht charter cost?

The cost of chartering a yacht depends on the season, the boat, and the duration.

Costs are determined at a nightly rate, not per head. The longer you charter, the more reduced the nightly rate becomes.

Some of our boats can sleep up to 10 people. In low season, if you split the hire, the average rate per person is approximately $85 a night.  This is comparable if not cheaper than a night in a hotel or staying at a resort, plus the boat includes your transport and entertainment costs.

Can we hire a skipper?

We offer a sail guide service to anyone who would like some additional training or support. Sail guides can be hired for one night or even the duration of your charter.

Our online booking system will help you to see what boats are available and their costs on specific dates. If you still need more information or you can’t find what you’re looking for, please contact our friendly reservations team.

What Choose

Sailing boat or Catamaran, what to sail in Sunshine Coast

At Yachting.Rent, we understand that the choice of a sailing boat or catamaran can greatly influence your sailing experience, especially in an idyllic location like Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. Both vessels provide unique experiences, and the decision often depends on your preference, the size of your group, and the type of journey you want to undertake.

A sailing boat provides a classic, intimate, and traditional sailing experience. With the wind in the sails and the closeness to the water, it gives you a real sense of interaction with the sea. For those seeking an authentic, hands-on sailing experience, a sailing boat is an excellent choice. They are perfect for smaller groups or families wanting a cosy and romantic sailing adventure.

Sailing boats offer more privacy, with separate cabins and communal spaces, allowing for quiet moments while enjoying the panoramic views of the Sunshine Coast. They’re also highly manoeuvrable, perfect for exploring the Sunshine Coast’s smaller, secluded bays and inlets.

On the other hand, a catamaran offers space, stability, and comfort. With a wide beam, catamarans provide ample deck space for sunbathing, socialising, and outdoor dining. They offer greater stability due to their dual-hull design, making them an ideal option for those who are prone to seasickness or prefer a smoother sailing experience.

Catamarans are excellent for larger groups, with multiple cabins and spacious interiors. Their shallow draft allows you to get closer to shore, perfect for exploring the crystal-clear waters and beautiful beaches of the Sunshine Coast.

Whether you choose a sailing boat for its intimacy and charm, or a catamaran for its stability and spaciousness, both vessels offer unique ways to explore the stunning Sunshine Coast of Queensland.

At Yachting.Rent, we offer a broad range of both sailing boats and catamarans, allowing you to choose the perfect vessel for your memorable sea journey along the Sunshine Coast. Our expert team is always ready to guide you in selecting the most suitable boat for your nautical adventure. So, get ready to set sail and make unforgettable memories on the Sunshine Coast’s blue waters.
