SPEAK TO A SALES PROFESSIONALOhio is a Midwest state on Lake Erie (north); Ohio River (Seneca Native American for good or great river) forms south/southeast border with West Virginia and Kentucky (southwest). Pennsylvania is to east and Indiana is west with Michigan on northwest. Although Ohio is surrounded by 5 states and mostly landlocked, it has more than 5,000 natural or manmade lakes for a range of waterways from Lake Erie to the Ohio River, providing outdoor recreation such as boating, fishing, swimming, kayaking and more. Many lakes are within State Parks offering additional recreation such as camping, hiking, picnicking, and hunting. Some manmade lakes are shallower and freeze in winter for ice skating, ice fishing, snowmobiling. Major cities with large metropolitan areas are Columbus, capital of Ohio and largest city located in the state’s center and site of Ohio State University, Columbus Art Museum, and Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum Collection. Cleveland, on Lake Erie in the northeast, is known for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Rhythm & Blues Music Hall of Fame, American Classical Music Hall of Fame & Museum, Cleveland Museum of Art, Playhouse Square (with 10 theaters), and the Cleveland Orchestra, one of America’s “Big Five.” Cleveland is the headquarters of the renowned Cleveland Clinic owned and operated by the non-profit Cleveland Clinic Foundation established in 1921. Cincinnati is on the Ohio River across from Kentucky in the southwest corner. The Cincinnati Art Museum showcases a comprehensive collection of over 100,000 works spanning 6,000 years of human history. Some other major cities are Toledo located near the Michigan border and Lake Erie; Dayton is located west of Columbus and north of Cincinnati; and Akron is south of Cleveland. Canton is the location of the Professional Football Hall of Fame. Wayne National Forest consists of 3 units of public land spread across 12 Ohio counties covering about 250,000 acres of Appalachian foothills in southeast Ohio and is the state’s only national forest. Picnicking and a wide spectrum of camping is available seasonally from May – September. Trails for OHVs (off highway vehicles) and horses are open mid-April to mid-December; hiking is permitted year-round. Ohio’s Buckeye trees (also known as Horse Chestnut) became the state tree in 1953. The nut resembles the eye of a deer, hence the name. Unlike the unrelated Sweet Chestnut, the leaves, bark, and fruit (nut) of the Buckeye tree are extremely toxic to animals and people. Ohio is also called the “Birthplace of Aviation” as officially declared by Congress in 2003 (instead of North Carolina) for a number of reasons; mainly, Dayton, Ohio was the hometown of aviation pioneers Wilbur and Orville Wright, brothers who were credited with inventing and flying the first controllable aircraft. The Wright brothers had a bicycle shop on the west side of Dayton where they did their aeronautical research, drafted design plans, and built early aircraft prototypes that were tested in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina on the soft sands of the beach, in case of a hard landing. The 1905 Wright Flyer was the world’s first practical airplane; able to stay aloft and controllable—a design they patented. They also established the world’s first test flight facilities at Huffman Prairie northeast of Dayton, which is the current site of the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, one of the largest air force bases in the US, spanning Greene and Montgomery counties in Ohio. Dayton is the site of the National Museum of the USAF and Ohio generated the most astronauts of any state in the union, including Neil Armstrong and John Glenn. Ohio’s central location on the navigable Ohio River, along with its railroads, made the state strategically significant to the Union during the Civil War. Ohio contributed more soldiers per capita than any other state and included the Union’s 3 top generals—Ulysses S. Grant, William Tecumseh Sherman, and Philip Sheridan. Like neighboring Pennsylvania, source of the Ohio River, Ohio rapidly industrialized in the 19th century, adding a “second frontier” to its agricultural base. One of its first iron manufacturing plants with a Hopewell Furnace opened in 1804 in the east near Pennsylvania. By the mid-19th century, 48 blast furnaces were operational. The discovery of coal deposits accelerated development of Ohio’s steel industry and by 1853 Cleveland was the third largest iron and steel producer in the nation. And by 1892, Ohio ranked second largest steel-producing state after Pennsylvania. The great depression of the 1930s hit Ohio hard and the state suffered heavy losses along with all manufacturing states at the close of the 20th century, but Ohio has since rebounded, especially in the 2010s by transitioning into advanced technology industries, dubbed the “third frontier” (agriculture – 1st frontier and industry – 2nd frontier). Ohio won the International Economic Development Council’s “Excellence in Economic Development Award” and was hailed as a national model of success. Ohio is also known for its excellent Universities/Colleges and High Schools. Ohio’s location proved an asset to its economic growth and expansion, linking the Northeast to the Midwest, with much cargo and business traffic passing through. Ohio has 312 miles of coastline on Lake Erie giving it many cargo ports (Cleveland, Toledo). Its southern border is the Ohio River, though most of the river itself belongs to Kentucky and West Virginia. Other significant rivers are Cuyahoga River, Great Miami River, Maumee River, Muskingum River, and Scioto River. The Pioneer Route known as Main Market Route 3 in the early 20th century, was chosen to become part of historic Lincoln Highway, connecting New York City to San Francisco, linking many of Ohio’s towns and cities together greatly impacting development of the state. In 1926, Lincoln Highway became US Route 30 and the Historic National Road with 228 miles in Ohio became US Route 40 in the newly created federal numbered highway system. Ohio features a highly developed network of bicycle routes—many follow rail trails (Ohio to Erie Trail, US Bicycle Route 50). Ohio features long distance hiking trails such the Buckeye Trail, which is a 1,444-mile loop around the state, North Country Trail (longest of 11 National Scenic Trails), and the American Discovery Trail which is a system of recreational trails and roads that together form a “coast to coast route across the mid-tier of the United States.” Ohio’s Water Trails are Dept. of Natural Resources (DNR) designated trails in partnership with local communities to promote awareness of public paddling access and safety. Water Trails are Blanchard River, Cuyahoga River Water Trail, East Sandusky Bay Water trail, Great Miami River Water Trail, Kokosing River Water Trail, Lake Erie Water Trail (Cuyahoga County), Lake Erie Islands Water Trails, and Mad River Water Trail. Lake Erie is the premier lake to visit; it is the shallowest and warmest of the Great Lakes for enjoyable swimming and fishing for Lake Erie perch and walleye. Ohio has over 200 miles of shoreline on Lake Erie, with hundreds of parks, beaches, towns, and cities with waterfront access points, along with amenities and attractions, such as Toledo and Sandusky (famous rollercoasters). Scenic Port Clinton and Marblehead Lighthouse area is excellent for kayaking along the shore. There are also a number of islands that are wonderful destinations, such as South Bass Island, Put-in-Bay, and Kelleys Island. Historic lighthouses dot the coastline. Lake Erie is known for its many shipwrecks making it a great destination for scuba divers. Numerous marinas and yacht clubs line the coast—here is a list of some that offer transient dockage: Anchor Pointe Marina, Bass Haven Marina, Bay Harbor Marina, Channel Park Marina, Conneaut Boat Club, Cranberry Creek Marina (seasonal dockage), Dock of the Bay Marina, East Harbor State Park Marina, Emerald Necklace Marina (seasonal dockage)/Cleveland Metroparks, Geneva Marina, Holiday Harbor Marina, Huron Lagoons Marina, Key Harbour Marina, Meinke Marina, Miller Marina, North Coast Marina & Campgrounds, Oasis Marinas at North Coast Harbor, Park Place Boat Club, Portside Marina, Romps Water Port Marina (seasonal dockage), Safe Harbor Lakefront, Safe Harbor Sandusky, Shrock’s Marina, Son Rise Marina, Superior Marine Group, Venetian Marina, West Harbor Marina, Wildwood Marina (seasonal dockage)/Cleveland Metroparks, Wolverine Park Marina. Notable recreational lakes are Salt Fork Lake within Salt Fork State Park in eastern Ohio near Cambridge. The 3000-acre lake has one of the largest beaches in the state and 8 boat ramps. Boat engine horsepower (HP) is unlimited on this lake and 2 marinas offer fuel (gas), supplies and docks. The lake is an ideal habitat for muskies and other fish that grow to 30-40” range, for great angling. Portage Lakes is a system of 8 connected lakes, located in Summit County near Akron in northern Ohio, offering some of the best bass fishing in northeastern Ohio besides boating and swimming recreation. Turkeyfoot Lake with a 900ft public beach is best for swimming. Portage Lakes features 8 boat ramps, boat camping at Latham Bay, hiking trails and picnic areas around the lakes and in Portage Lakes State Park. Alum Creek Reservoir, created in the 1970s in Delaware, Ohio, just north of Columbus, is popular for boating, jet skiing, kayaking, and beginner sailing. Lake acreage is 3,387 of water with designated areas for unlimited HP boating and waterskiing. Features 4 boat ramps, full-service marina, and docks. Alum Creek Lake also features the state’s largest inland beach at 3,000ft with facilities and volleyball courts, and is open year-round. Alum Creek State Park has nearly 40-miles of hiking trails for bird watching and hunting. Manmade Lake Logan is within Lake Logan State Park located southeast of Columbus on Rt 33, in the Appalachian foothills of southeast Hocking Valley. The 400-acre lake with 527ft Lake Logan Beach has a marina with boat rental service (pontoons, kayaks, pedal boats, paddle boards), seasonal boat docks for rental (State Park), and boat launch. Boating is limited to 10HP only. Recreational activities include fishing, swimming, picnicking, hiking—the State Park includes a 1.25-mile section of the Buckeye Trail, and winter recreation—sledding, ice fishing. Lake Logan is near Wayne National Forest. Indian Lake is manmade in west-central Ohio with easy access to 5 boat ramps and a dedicated kayak launch. Popular lake for boating, waterskiing, jet skiing, swimming, and fishing—it is one of the top fisheries in the state for saugeye (a tasty hybrid of walleye and sauger). Pymatuning Lake, on the OH/PA state line in the northeast, is the largest inland lake at 14,000 acres of reservoir and is considered one of Ohio’s best lakes. A public swimming beach with facilities is located near the causeway. Other amenities are boat launches, docks, concessions, and more. This lake is especially great for fishing walleye. Caesar Creek Lake in Waynesville, southwest Ohio within Caesar Creek State Park, features a large full-service marina and 5 boat ramps around the lake, plenty of open space for boating and 2 designated boat-swim areas, along with a public beach and many hiking trails. Stocked with muskie fingerlings since 1990, making it a top lake for muskie anglers. Grand Lake St Marys is a 13,000-acre lake in western Ohio with a yesteryear ambience. This manmade lake was originally a reservoir and it’s one of Ohio’s largest inland lakes, featuring 8 boat ramps around the lake. Kayakers can put in at the many small coves to paddle among lily pads. The 52 miles of shoreline has 4 swimming beaches. Fishing piers and channels are popular fishing spots. Chippewa Lake is one of the prettiest lakes in northern Ohio’s Medina County. Historically inhabited by Native Americans, it was also the site of Chippewa Lake Amusement Park that closed in the 1970s after 100 years in operation. Today the 325-acre lake is enjoyed by boaters and swimmers and features a boat launch and picnic shelter area. Tappan Lake in northern Ohio features unforgettable gorgeous sunsets. Boating, waterskiing, jet skiing, and tubing are popular recreation on the 2,300-acre lake located in Deersville. Features a marina, 2 boat ramps, concessions, nature center, and year-round events. Other notable lakes are Burr Oak Lake, East Fork Lake (William Harsha Lake), Mosquito Creek Lake, Atwood Lake, and Jesse Owens State Park & Wildlife Area. The Ohio River has boat launch sites every 20 miles allowing boaters to do one-way or round trips from hours to several days on the river. Cincinnati in the southwest corner of Ohio on the river, offers big city entertainment, attractions and waterfront amenities including marinas, docking, and restaurants. Boaters can go upriver to Pennsylvania or downriver to Louisville, Kentucky, but will encounter numerous locks and sizeable commercial vessels. Worldwide Yacht Sales- 150 Ft Yachts For Sale

DeLand power boat builder indicted in Ohio, sued for $270K by New York man for fraudTerrance Weber wanted to repower his 30-foot Spectre performance boat so he reached out to a DeLand company that builds the "go-fast" water vessels. But three years later he's still in "paradise without his boat" and out more than $270,000, according to a lawsuit. It doesn't look like he will be getting any relief anytime soon, either. In July, owners of the boat-making company, Todd Allen Lamb, 50, and his wife Karen Nicole Lamb, 42, were each indicted in Ohio on nine counts, including felony charges of grand theft. And in a bizarre twist, Weber is also in trouble with the law. On December 24, 2022, he allegedly paid a man to steal a boat from Lamb's DeLand shop and faces charges of burglary and grand theft of more than $100,000, according to court records. It is a complex tale that is playing itself out in courtrooms in Bellefontaine, Ohio, and Volusia County, Florida, with no obvious takeaways other than to "let the buyer beware" when it comes to high-speed boats and that it doesn't pay to take the law into your own hands, even if you feel like you've been stiffed. Who is Todd Lamb?Todd Lamb and his family got a warm welcome when he relocated his high-performance boat company, Spectre Powerboats , to a 26,000-square-foot space at DeLand Municipal Airport from central Ohio, according to a December 2021 press release. “We are very happy to be in Florida, closer to 85 percent of our customers,” he said in the Team Volusia Economic Development Corp. release. “And we are especially glad to have landed in the DeLand area of Volusia County. The area offers an exceptional quality of life and an excellent business climate. “ The release says Lamb is a veteran of boat building and racing, starting in 1992 at the age of 18 when he built small racing boats out of crashed boat parts. “I couldn’t afford to build new ones, so I built new boats from recycled and discarded boats. In a way I sneaked into the industry," he said. Government officials welcomed Lamb and his wife Karen, who worked at the company, as well as their teenage daughter. “The addition of Spectre Powerboats to our corporate roster. . . underscores DeLand’s role in hosting sports-related activities," said Nick Conte, DeLand's economic development manager at the time. “We welcome Spectre Powerboats to our community and our growing list of marine manufacturers,” echoed Volusia County Manager George Recktenwald. “Spectre’s move to Volusia County is another indication that this is a great place to do business.” Lamb said Team Volusia was instrumental in the site search process and made presentations to local partners who could provide services and support to Spectre. “Your advice and assistance helped us make many important decisions in a timely manner, keeping our relocation on time,” he said. The locals may not have been so helpful if they had done a Google search on the new resident. Prior to moving to DeLand, the Lambs were living in Bellefontaine, Ohio, a small town northeast of Dayton. According to the FBI, in October 2013, Todd Lamb pleaded guilty in the U.S. Southern District Court of Ohio to selling a Mack dump truck to more than one buyer. Selling the same truck twiceAfter he delivered the truck to the first buyer, he falsely told the second buyer that the truck had been stolen from the seaport in Jacksonville. He told the second buyer, who was from Wyoming, that he would refund the purchase price but did not, FBI investigators said. The Wyoming buyer got part of his money eight years later when Lamb pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful interstate transportation of stolen motor vehicles, and one count of wire fraud. Investigators said Lamb and his wife, Karen, conducted consignment sales and auctions of vehicles, equipment, and other goods and merchandise under the companies Almite Services and Almite Auctions. He also stole and sold vehicles through his businesses, including a Caterpillar backhoe to the Wyoming buyer. The Columbus News Dispatch reported in 2014 that Todd Lamb was sentenced to a year in prison. According to the FBI, Karen Lamb pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of making false statements relating to the transfer of a vehicle title and was sentenced to six months’ probation in October 2012. In the Ohio indictment, announced last summer, the couple was charged with three counts of fourth-degree felony grand theft, third-degree felony aggravated theft, theft from an elderly person, third-degree felony grand theft, fourth-degree felony defrauding creditors, second-degree felony telecommunications fraud, and engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity. The indictment, provided to the Daytona Beach News-Journal by the Logan County Clerk of Courts, shows the Lambs engaged in the alleged criminal activity starting in 2017. Between Dec. 19, 2017, and June 19, 2020, the Lambs "deprived an Ohio man of property and services" and stole $143,650 along with two Mercury boat engines, the document states. From Feb. 9, 2018, through Oct. 10, 2018, the Lambs reportedly stole $209,339 from another Ohio man. An elderly man from the state lost $300,462 to the Lambs who never delivered property or services to him, the court document outlined. All the funds taken from the Ohio residents were paid to the Lambs to build boats, said Eric Stewart, the Logan County prosecutor handling the Lambs' case. "They never got their boats and they did not get their money back," Stewart said. The Lambs also deprived Caterpillar, a heavy equipment company, of two hydraulic excavators in March and December 2020. And, the couple also defrauded Caterpillar as creditors of more than $7,500 but less than $150,000, the Ohio prosecutor said. "He signed a lease putting little money down, and then he sells the machines and never paid the lease," Stewart said. Stewart said Todd was released by the Ohio court but a GPS ankle monitor was placed on him until his trial next year. Karen Lamb was released on her own recognizance, the Logan County prosecutor said. Reached at Spectre Powerboats business telephone number, and asked about the allegations, Todd Lamb said that he had no idea what a News-Journal reporter was asking him about and that the reporter had the wrong number and hung up. But Lamb did reach out to his alleged victims after he was arrested in Volusia County on Ohio warrants and released on $10,000 bail. Weber provided the News-Journal with a voicemail he claims Todd Lamb left him. In that voicemail, Lamb identifies himself and says he wants to make things right with Weber and the Ohio victims. "I'm sure you guys are very upset with me, but I'd like to see if there's a way we can work all this out," he said in the voicemail recording. Failure to deliverIn November 2021 Weber, of New York, agreed to have Todd Lamb build him a new 32-foot Spectre performance catamaran for $340,000, including a trade-in, he said. "When he dropped in an amazing manufacturer's discount, I was sold," Weber recalled in a telephone interview of the deal he made with Lamb. As part of the agreement, Weber traded in his used Spectre boat for $80,000 putting down a $10,000 deposit on Nov. 1, 2021. According to a lawsuit filed by Weber, he has paid Lamb, including the trade-in value, $271,787.50. For the first four months, everything appeared normal but then Lamb stopped giving Weber updates on the boat. The New York businessman then hired another boating company in Florida to handle the boat building. "He (Todd Lamb) started becoming adversarial and I wondered why he was giving us such an attitude for simple questions he was being asked," Weber said. "Then I Googled him and found that he had served time for scamming people, that he was under investigation for fraud, and I knew I was screwed." When Weber continuously asked Lamb to provide status reports, he eventually asked the man for his trade-in back. Then Lamb called the police on him, Weber said, An October 2022 DeLand police report shows Lamb reported Weber's constant contact and asked the police to tell Weber to stop calling him and his employees. Weber said he tried reaching an agreement with Lamb to get his boat "as is" but Lamb refused. In the end, Lamb did not deliver the new boat and did not return the trade-in, Weber said. Weber, a small businessman, said the theft has had an emotional impact on him. "I've laughed, I've cried. I've been through every emotional gamut you could go through," Weber said. "I mean, look at the amount of money they are stealing. It's like taking a house from someone." Weber said he created a social media page denouncing the Lambs' activities and was contacted by victims in Ohio and Georgia, who have had similar experiences with Lamb. Weber is suing the Lambs hoping to recoup what he said he paid the couple between November 2021 and July 2022 - $271.787.50 - for the boat they did not deliver, documents detail. Victim becomes a thief?Weber said his frustration grew even more when he tried to report Lamb's criminal activity to the DeLand Police Department. He said he made special trips to DeLand to visit the police station to file a complaint but that if "he got more than 30 seconds at the plexi glass," the front lobby's window, it was too much. Weber said he sent DeLand police a document drafted by his New York lawyer, Mark Seidenfeld, on Dec. 25, 2022, outlining what Lamb did but police did not act on it. "They told me that Todd Lamb was a legitimate businessman and that my issue was a civil case," Weber said. "But the police readily arrested me over my very own boat." According to a DeLand police arrest report, on Dec. 24, they responded to an alarm at Lamb's shop. Lamb told them a boat had been taken. He told police that he had an ongoing civil issue with Weber and that Weber had said he would be taking a boat from his business, the report said. DeLand police spokeswoman Vicki Karr said there is no record of Weber contacting the police prior to the Dec. 24 grand theft arrest. Police noted that a bay door had been cut open. State police in South Carolina later spotted the 32-foot boat being towed north on Interstate 95 and stopped the vehicle. They arrested Ronnie Dominguez, of Pennsylvania, who said Weber had paid him to tow the boat to New York, an arrest report states. Weber told investigators that he had paid a sum of money for the boat and that he and Lamb had reached an agreement where he could pick it up. This was outlined in a letter to DeLand police from Weber's New York attorney dated Dec. 25, 2022. Another lawsuit filedWeber sued Spectre Marine LLC in April. He alleges in the last five years, the Lambs have opened different boat manufacturing companies under the Spectre name and that they started Spectre Marine, LLC., doing business as Spectre Powerboats at the Summerhill Drive location in DeLand. "They were not conducting business at that location. It was a criminal enterprise," Weber said. Lambs depend on ill-gotten proceedsThe lawsuit filed by Weber argues that the Lambs depend on ill-gotten proceeds as their income and have engaged in racketeering activities related to custom powerboat manufacturing. The Lambs built the boat for Weber but kept increasing the value and then claimed Weber owed them $55,000. The Lambs then sold the boat to a third party, the suit states. "I am hoping the court will make a judgment against Todd Lamb and his Spectre company," Weber said. "I got robbed, dude. I got straight robbed." In a statement, DeLand officials said they had a minimal role in getting the Lambs to locate in the city. "Like any business that relocates to our community, we expect customers to be treated fairly and ethically," they said. "If the allegations are indeed true, we hope justice is served and that those wronged are able to pursue remedies available through our court system,” the statement read. Recktenwald did not respond to an inquiry from the News-Journal asking for comment. Three Team Volusia executives also did not respond to emails from the News-Journal seeking comment. Weber awaits his fate in criminal court. More From ForbesBlaming immigrants for eating pets is an old american urban legend. - Share to Facebook

(Photo by Win McNamee/Getty Images) Blaming immigrants for eating pets was an American urban legend years before Donald Trump spread the rumor about Haitians in Ohio. Following the pattern of other urban legends, such as the “rat in the Coke bottle” and the “Vanishing Hitchhiker,” the legend that newly settled immigrants are eating dogs and cats has been around for decades. The legends are not harmless fun. After Trump and his running mate JD Vance spread the rumors about Haitians, a bomb threat using “hateful language towards immigrants and Haitians” caused an evacuation of City Hall and children to evacuate an elementary school in Springfield, Ohio. The ControversyAs with other urban legends, the story of Haitians eating local pets was spread not by eyewitnesses but by individuals claiming they heard the story. “The woman behind an early Facebook post spreading a harmful and baseless claim about Haitian immigrants eating local pets that helped thrust a small Ohio city into the national spotlight says she had no firsthand knowledge of any such incident and is now filled with regret and fear as a result of the ensuing fallout,” reported NBC News . On X (formerly Twitter), vice presidential candidate JD Vance wrote , “Reports now show that people have had their pets abducted and eaten by people who shouldn’t be in this country.” Donald Trump made the rumor a central argument against immigration during the presidential debate with Kamala Harris. “In Springfield, they're eating the dogs,” he said . “The people that came in. They’re eating the cats. They’re eating—they’re eating the pets of the people that live there. And this is what’s happening in our country. And it’s a shame.” Trump and Vance fueled the story. However, NBC News reports, “Local police and city officials have repeatedly said there is no evidence of such crimes in Springfield, but that hasn’t stopped the lies from spreading across the country.” Best Pet Insurance Companies Of October 2022How much does pet insurance cost in 2022, an american urban legend. Long before Springfield residents, neo-Nazis and others spread rumors about Haitians, other Americans told tales of immigrants eating pets. “Do not too easily accept the statement . . . that Asian refugees barbecue pet dogs here ‘all the time,’” wrote Jan Harold Brunvand, professor emeritus at the University of Utah, in 1986. Brunvand identified stories from the 1980s about Asian refugees eating pets that emerged in Salt Lake City, Utah, Stockton, California, Fairfax, Virginia and elsewhere. “Evidence was supposedly found in garbage cans, and people had heard about Vietnamese wanting to buy puppies or kittens to use for food,” wrote Brunvand in his book The Mexican Pet , one of several books he authored compiling folklore or urban legends. (Journalist Brandy Zadrozny found a 1987 article on the topic.) Brunvand noted there is typically a racial element to the rumors. “These examples of modern folklore are similar to earlier stories about pet remains found in garbage cans behind Chinese restaurants.” As if anticipating the current urban legend about Haitians and pets in Springfield, Ohio, Brunvand writes, “Another common twist is the notion that there has been a recent rash of missing pets in the community; the statistics on such crimes, dug up by some enterprising reporter, usually prove to be normal.” In 1999, in a later book, Too Good To Be True , Brunvand described news stories on allegations of immigrants eating pets: “These items are typical of many similar articles that have appeared in the American press since Southeast Asian refugees began arriving in large numbers during the 1970s and ‘80s. Vague rumors about disappearing pets, strange cooking odors, and supposedly larger problems with pet-eating in another state—usually California—are standard features of such stories.” Brunvand added, “The prejudices displayed in American ‘eaten pet’ stories are generally directed against Asians, and occasionally immigrants from southern or eastern Europe.” Today, Haitians are the disfavored group, making the current stories different from those of the past. There is another 2024 twist on the urban legend about immigrants eating pets. In 2024, a former president and his current running mate are the ones spreading the story. - Editorial Standards

GET NATIONAL BREAKING NEWS ALERTSThe latest breaking updates, delivered straight to your email inbox. A couple in their 60s is safe after a near disaster in Isle of Palms, South Carolina, thanks to the quick actions of strangers. The vacationing couple accidentally drove their vehicle off a marina boat dock and into the water below due to GPS confusion, leading to a dramatic rescue. Christopher Sollom, general manager of the Islander 71 restaurant, described the scene. "One of our bartenders, Johnny, a former lifeguard down in Myrtle Beach, didn't even hesitate; he jumped right in and was able to pull two people out of the car before it submerged into the water," Sollom told WCIV-TV . Another employee, known as "Cash," joined Johnny in the water while other staff members sprang into action. "By the time that I got down here, it was completely submerged," Sollom said. "So, that was a matter of 60 seconds from when someone got me upstairs to when I ran downstairs." After the initial rescue, Sollom helped the woman to safety. "The lady was very frantic; you could tell she was trying to gather everything to get out, so that’s where we assisted her from there," he added. Fortunately, the couple had left their windows open, making the rescue easier. The couple is doing well and plans to thank their rescuers. On Sunday, a dive team from the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office helped retrieve the submerged vehicle. |
