Tred Avon Yacht Club

Founded in 1931, Tred Avon Yacht Club has a distinguished history of boating and yacht racing. Located at the entrance to the Tred Avon River, on Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay the club provides members and guests an ideal setting for year-round enjoyment. Whether racer or cruiser, sailor or power boater, TAYC is the perfect family-friendly place.

Stories from Tred Avon Yacht Club

In June of 1931 a small group of Oxford citizens established a bathing and sporting club on The Strand just above the Oxford Ferry dock. They named it the Kap Dun Club, which comes from an old English spelling of Town Point (or Cape). As the sea nettles moved in for the summer, the sporting activity quickly focused on yacht racing and the club held its first races for three boats on a Sunday in late June. The club name was changed to the Kap Dun Yacht Club. The fleet grew each week and by Labor Day of that year, the club organized a regatta with races for Knockabouts, Barnegat sneakboxes, Star boats, powered workboats, row boats, and a Free-for-All class including both square and sharp ended Log Canoes. The club also hosted a long-distance race to Thimble Shoals for cruising boats. There was an active social schedule with dinners and dances during the summer.

In January 1932, membership voted to change the name of the club to the Tred Avon Yacht Club. The same clubhouse was used but a proper flagpole was erected. By-laws were written specifying a variety of membership categories, including women and juniors. The racing program flourished with weekly races and a July 4th regatta for Stars, Log Canoes, 16’ and 20’ classes and two Free-for-All classes. Membership increased to 89.

Throughout the 1930s, the club grew and refined its racing. In 1934, the annual regatta was combined with that of the Chesapeake Bay Yacht Club and called the Oxford Regatta. By the late 1930s, there was a strong desire to build a dedicated yacht club for both improved boating and social activities. A new clubhouse was designed and built; a new constitution and by-laws were adopted; and the club was incorporated. The membership continued to grow, racing flourished and the TAYC was asked to host the Comet Nationals in September 1939. In 1940, the Club made an effort to increase Junior participation and leadership started the Junior Sailing program with the addition of a club fleet. During the war years, racing was progressively limited but regattas managed to stay alive in some form. During the 40s and 50s, the club developed rapidly in facility, amenities and membership engagement.  In 1950, the Junior Sailing Class was formally organized and subsequently grew over the years with many of its alumni returning to teach the next generation of juniors. During the latter 20th century many club families transitioned from racing one designs to racing cruising yachts. The club racing program included CCA and then PHRF handicap series. Teams of club members won many Bay championships and high point trophies from CBYRA.

In 1990, membership voted to build a new two-story house and in late 1991, the new club opened and in 2001, membership voted to install floating docks, which provided mooring for a club fleet of Ideal 18’s which were purchased for the use of members for racing, instruction and day sailing. This fleet, known as Focus on Sailing, has increased participation in sailing by members who are not yacht owners or who want to sail in one designs with other members.

Tred Avon Yacht Club upgrades, expands marine facilities

  • Nov 30, 2018

OXFORD — The Tred Avon Yacht Club in Oxford wanted to expand and upgrade its marina facilities to provide a safer boating environment for years to come.

Andrews, Miller & Associates, a division of Davis, Bowen & Friedel, Inc. (DBF), was hired to expand the club’s existing basin and implement upgrades to a portion of the marina facilities. The renovations and additions improved storm and wave protection for members and guests using the facility.

Several alternatives were considered to develop the most cost-effective plan. Retrofitting a portion of the existing breakwaters and additional placement of breakwaters — fixed nearshore and floating concrete offshore — along the channelward perimeter was done to reduce waves from entering the basin. This resulted in the reduction of threat of injury to boaters and damage to their boats. Additional permanent and transient slips with water and electric hookups were added along the new concrete floating breakwater.

“It was a challenging but enjoyable experience working with the yacht club to provide a solution that best suited their needs and fit their budget,” Ken Eaton, senior project manager and LEED green associate, said.

Throughout the various stages of the project, DBF was able to work closely with the club to ensure the project met or exceeded its expectations. Construction was completed in conjunction with other projects the Yacht Club was undertaking at the time, and the marina facility elements were modified to tie into other facility improvements.

Services provided by the DBF team included topographic and bathymetric survey, concept layouts, recommended alternatives, preliminary plan, Corps and state permitting, design development plans, final construction documents, cost estimates, bidding assistance, and construction administration.

Davis, Bowen & Friedel, Inc., is a full-service architectural, engineering, planning, and surveying firm with offices in Salisbury, Easton, and Milford, Del. For additional information about DBF, visit www.db finc.com .

City of Moscow Encourages Fireworks Safety

City of Moscow Encourages Fireworks Safety

The Moscow Fire Department would like to remind the community of safety practices and laws regarding fireworks as the July 4 th  Independence Day holiday approaches.

According to  Idaho Code Section 39-2606 , “nonaerial common fireworks” are allowed to be sold and used beginning midnight on June 23 rd  until midnight on July 5 th . Nonaerial common fireworks are defined by Idaho Code ( Section 39-2602 ) as “any fireworks such as ground spinners, fountains, sparklers, smoke devices or snakes designed to remain on or near the ground and not to travel outside a fifteen (15) foot diameter circle or emit sparks or other burning material which land outside a twenty (20) foot diameter circle or above a height of twenty (20) feet.” These types of familiar fireworks are known as “safe and sane.”

• Only use fireworks outdoors

• Always have water handy  (hose or bucket)

• Only use fireworks as intended —don’t try to alter them or combine them

• Never relight a “dud” firework —wait 20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water

• Spectators should keep a safe distance from the shooter

• The shooter should wear safety glasses

• Alcohol and fireworks  do not mix —have a “designated shooter”

• Only persons over the age of 12 should be allowed to handle sparklers of any type

• Never use illegal or homemade fireworks — they can kill you

According to  a recent report  by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), fireworks were involved with an estimated 10,200 injuries in U.S. emergency rooms in 2022, with a trending increase of over 500 fireworks-related injuries a year from 2007 to 2022. Also in 2022, 11 non-occupational, fireworks-related deaths were reported.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)  reports  that nearly 20,000 fires—including 1,900 structure fires, 500 vehicle fires, and 17,100 outside and other fires—are started by fireworks every year. In 2018, such fires caused five deaths, 46 civilian injuries, and $105 million in direct property damage.

Illegal fireworks are prohibited at any time and the use of these dangerous explosives may result in life-threatening injuries, extensive property damage, and out-of-control fires. Illegal fireworks are those commonly known as “firecrackers,” “bottle rockets,” “cherry bombs,” “roman candles,” or other  explosive devices that do not meet the definition of nonaerial common fireworks . Illegal fireworks are not available for purchase in the city of Moscow. Residents are urged to use extreme caution when purchasing fireworks outside the city, as there are opportunities nearby to purchase fireworks considered illegal in Moscow.

If you are caught discharging non-aerial common fireworks outside of the permitted dates or illegal fireworks at any time, your fireworks can be confiscated and you can be subject to a misdemeanor criminal charge that may result in a fine and or jail time. Please remember the fire danger and injuries fireworks can cause, follow these guidelines, and enjoy a safe holiday.

As the club refined its racing throughout the 1930's, sailing regattas became well-known and well-attended.

Today, TAYC's yachting heritage remains at the forefront. Through encouraging interest and participation in boating and sailing, we cultivate shared passions between members and our community. We hope people of all ages will come to experience TAYC's sportsmanship-both on the water and on land.
