NYC Parks drops idea to purchase defunct City Island private marina for concession
“While NYC Parks worked with Stuyvesant Yacht Club to explore the possibility of making this property part of Parks’ portfolio of public marinas, the club voted in favor of a private land sale,” stated a Parks spokesman.

CICA wrote two letters to the Parks Department explaining that certain stipulations would be needed for the community to accept a public facility, and filed Freedom of Information Law requests, retrieving files and e-mails on the matter, said John Doyle, CICA corresponding secretary.
“The civic and our elected officials really served as watch dogs on this,” said Doyle, “I think this is an example of people coming together to keep a watchful eye on things and letting the agencies know that there were serious concerns on this.”
“I am a believer in public access to the waterfront, but there are more appropriate places,” said Doyle, adding that a public marina would have changed the character of the quiet residential street.
Since the club’s new owner is a private individual, the only opportunity the civic group will have to review any future plans would be if there is an application to change the zoning, stated Barbara Dolensek, CICA vice president.
He said he was happy with the outcome because he believed something was going to happen to the yacht club property, and he did not feel that NYC Parks was transparent regarding their plans. Sandy Blamed for Knocking Wind Out of Historic Bronx Yacht Club's Sails
A yacht club on City Island is being forced to close its doors after more than a century in the Bronx and comes nearly three years after it was badly damaged during Hurricane Sandy. NY1's Erin Clarke filed the following report.
Mary Ellen Burgess and her cousin Joanne Valletta's eyes light up as they tell stories about their childhood on City Island.
"We would wake up to sounds of the masts tingling in the air. They were our morning wake-up calls," recalled Burgess.
"There was a group of us and we wanted to see who could jump off the highest point of the dock," Valletta added.
Much of their time was spent at the Stuyvesant Yacht Club where Burgess' dad was steward for eight years.
The club where she and her older siblings helped out on the weekends became home.
"My little brothers and sisters. They were adopted by all of the members. They got to go sailing and have fun where the older ones, we had work," Burgess said.
The Stuyvesant was originally established in 1890 on a ferry boat docked in Port Morris and then moved to Pelham Bay.
It was later pushed out of the bay when Orchard Beach was being constructed and in 1934 the Stuyvesant made City Island home.
Despite being the smallest club on the island and a fire in 1968, the Stuyvesant prospered, but Hurricane Sandy proved to be more than it could handle.
"Everybody who was a member there worked so hard the week before Sandy to get their boats out of the water and they got them up on to their cradles on dry land and wouldn't you know, the storm surge came up and knocked them all over and damaged and destroyed most of the boats," said City Island Historical Society Vice President Barbara Dolensek. "Their sea wall is a mess. Their building has problems"
"The two storms that we had destroyed the club and we couldn't get a tax relief from the city and they kept taxing us more and more 'til it forced us out," said Robert Kolaja, a Stuyvesant Yacht Club member.
Membership has since dwindled, making it difficult for the club to make the necessary repairs and stay afloat.
After 80 years on City Island, the Stuyvesant will be the first yacht club to close.
"It hurt because we put so much effort in," Kolaja said.
And soon those who hold the club dear will only have their memories of it left.
A sale of the property is pending.

| shows some free town moorings inside Manhassett Bay which is just to the south.
That is right at the town of Port which is not without it's charms and conveniences and is well protected.

| balls pretty much right where Activecaptian puts them. #7 has it's pennant but we took it anyway as it was the last open one for the day. We had to McGyver it a little by bending on heavy shackle and heavy line. The town's very friendly taxi is $4 per passenger one way and they run until about 11pm. They 9/71.
I would check North Minneford, it looks like they have several open/transient moorings available.
There is a laundromat, 2 grocery stores and 2 marine/hardware stores on the island. The City Island Yacht Sales dock has Gas/Diesel and pumpout. 8:30-4:30 Mon-Sat.
There's a 15 min. bus ride to a subway station if you want to dip into the big city too.

A larger, but incomplete photo of the Stuyvesant Yacht Club's south yard. It appears that most of their hauled boats received damage. A number of boats at Stuyvesant Yacht Club were tossed about in heavy seas and a high storm surge from Hurricane Sandy. These boats were on land at the time. Another view from the Widow's walk on the room of the Stuyvesant Yacht Clubhouse. This area is in its out-of-season condition. I still love to go there. It does not feel that I am in a major metropolitian area when I am here. Howard is standing on a board in the middle of the compass. SYC sailboats bashed into each other during the midnight high tide Tuesday morning. A storm surge caused boats to float off their poppets and crash into surrounding vessels. At Stuyvesant Yacht Club water came over the sea wall and eventually lifted some boats and other debris in the yard, eventually setting down the boats on the dry as the tide and surge receded. Soon these boats will all be in the water. Tides around City island and Eastchester Bay received a 5ft+ increase due to the storm surge. The Stuyvesant Yacht Club's dock and pier was lifted as tides rose above usual heights. This is one of my favorite places to be at Stuyvesant Yacht Club. Here it is in its pre-season condition. This is how it looks among monstrous Soviet era faceless behemoths. We visited it in the beginning of August while on a tour of Siberia. Consecrated in 1914, ruined by communist obscurantists in 1930 and re-erected in 1993, this chapel symbolizes unbelievable ideological mishmash still reigning in Russians' brains.
