Booked this tour on the first day we were in Savannah for the long weekend with my parents, husband , in laws, and brother. It was a great taste of what Savannah has to offer, a way to get familiar with the area, and amazing views. The bus driver was very funny and interactive. What I didn’t know was that their service will pick you up and drop you off at your leisure for the rest of the day and the next day after your tour. Better than an Uber! Loved it !

Boat Trips To Georgia’s Barrier Islands

The three major barrier islands south of Tybee – Little Tybee, Wassaw and Ossabaw – are readily accessible as a day trip from the Savannah-Tybee region. As none of the islands have road access, a boat (or kayak, or paddleboard) is the only way to get there.

The pristine nature reserve of Little Tybee Island is the easiest to get to, a short boat ride south of Tybee. Several boat excursions are available, either touring the island and exploring its creeks (when tides allow) to see dolphins and birds, or landing, with time on the island’s secluded beaches to relax or look for shells. Further afield are Wassaw National Wildlife Refuge, and Ossabaw Island, the latter privately managed as a nature reserve and cultural site. The large publicly-accessible portion of Wassaw offers beautiful beaches and hiking trails through the island’s forested ridge, and most boat excursions will allow time to venture on land. The situation at Ossabaw is slightly more complicated. The beach is accessible to all, with many boat tours touring the island or landing only on these public areas. Access to the interior is controlled by the Ossabaw Island Foundation, and must be arranged either directly with them or via a tour guide, who will arrange access on your behalf. Been stuck behind a train at President Street? Provide input on rail crossing study this week

In a town full of railroad crossings, few may draw the ire of residents more than the one at President Street near Truman Parkway. The crossing frequently causes disruptions to commuters traveling to and from Chatham County's eastern islands due to trains accessing industry along the Savannah River.

But now Chatham County and Savannah governments are partnering with the Coastal Region Metropolitan Planning Organization to study options for eliminating the crossing; the study's findings will be used to apply for grant programs such as the Federal Railroad Administration’s At-Grade Crossing Elimination Program, according to the project's website .

"This has to change," said Savannah Mayor Van Johnson at a recent press conference. "All of us are familiar with trying to get to where you need to go, and you can't get there because of a train."

There will be two public meetings about the study for residents to provide input on issues created by the crossing, as well as give insight on the community's preferred alternatives.

The first public meeting will be from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 17 at Wilmington Island's Frank Murray Community Center. The second will be from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., Sept. 18 at the Mendonsa Hearing Room in downtown Savannah.

The study will consider current and future traffic patterns for freight, commuter, local, bicycle and pedestrian traffic, according to the project's website. There will also be consideration of future growth especially for the industrial areas east of Truman Parkway," the project website states.

The final product of the study will entail a project justification statement, preferred alternatives and costs estimates to allow for preliminary engineering and a concept report required for construction.

Johnson noted how the President Street crossing can cause particularly long disruptions due to the trains moving back and forth. Trains do that while unloading or loading cargo or switching tracks.

There are also potential public safety concerns if police or ambulances are unable to cross due to disruptions, Johnson said. It also contributes to some commuters being late for work.

"That should not be a fact of life here in Savannah," Johnson said.

Highest-ranked pizza restaurants in Savannah by diners

Pizza is one of those universal languages that Americans just get. Even if the styles are vastly different based on the region—like a thin wide slice from New York, a thick square cut with crispy edges from Detroit, or deep cheesy pie in a pan from Chicago—many can agree that the combination of chewy dough, tangy sauce, and gooey cheese is a true American classic.

The growing number of pizza joints is enough proof: more than 73,000 pizza restaurants were logged in the United States in 2023 . Yet, with so many options to choose from, how is a pizza connoisseur supposed to know the best place to grab a slice?

There's a lot of competition out there to become the best pizza place in town, especially with people who have a lot of opinions. The aesthetic is always important to consider; maybe customers prefer a classic greasy joint with checkered tablecloths and shakers of Parmesan and red pepper flakes to douse their slice, or perhaps something artisanal with wood-fired pies served with a thoughtfully curated wine menu. Then there's the pizza itself. Is the restaurant using high-quality ingredients? Does the taste make you want to keep eating more and more?

It may seem like a lot of meticulous details, but given that Americans could eat up to 180 slices of pizza in a year , it only makes sense that all of these details are considered when choosing a go-to local spot. Thankfully, there's enough data out there to steer customers in the right direction instead of having to do the research themselves.

Stacker compiled a list of the highest-ranked pizza restaurants in Savannah using data from Yelp . Data is as of March 29, 2024. Businesses were selected using Yelp's ranking system, which calculates an adjusted rating value that takes into account the number of ratings as well as the rating score itself. Only restaurants with at least 25 reviews were considered.
