Motor Boat Types Explained Bowrider

Bowriders are a perfect choice for beginners and those with family. The open bow area makes room for extra seats in the helm and can hold more than 8 passengers. The boat is about 17-30 inches in length. The V-shaped hull offers smooth rides, whether on inland waters or coastal waters.

The boat can be powered by outboard engines or stern drive and can be used for water sports or fishing.

Powerboats that have sleeping accommodations onboard are referred to as cabin cruisers. They are ideal for relaxed cruises as they include modern comforts like air conditioners, heaters, and power generators.

These cruiser boats have a deep V-bottom, shaft drive mechanism, and rudder steering. The cruiser is mainly used on salty, coastal waters and can be propelled with pod drive, sterndrive, outboard, and inboard motors.

The center console gets its name from the fact that the helm is fitted in the console found at the boat’s center. It lacks a foredeck and cabin. The motor boat’s design makes it possible for anglers to walk from the bow to the stern without stepping on the gunwales. This 13-45’’ boat uses outboard motors to cruise.

Center consoles are great for sports fishing. They work perfectly in harsh offshore waterways where there are plenty of schools of fish. The deck in center consoles has powerful insulation to ice the fish storage. Also, the boat can hold fish lockers, outriggers, gunwale rod holders, and bait wells.

  • Center consoles can be used for fresh and saltwater fishing, cruising, and water sports.
  • They have better access to water.
  • They are easy to maintain.
  • It lacks protection from the elements.

  • They have fast speeds.
  • They consume a lot of fuel.
  • They are pricey.

High-Performance Motor Boats

Motor Boat Types Explained High-Performance Motor Boats

As the name suggests, these motorboats are designed for speed and performance. Their high power to weight ratio, steep deadrise, and narrow beam help the boat perform on the water. High-performance boats are also referred to as go-fast boats and muscle boats.

These go-fast motorboats are powered by stern drives, high horsepower outboards, or surface drives. With 25-60 ft. length, these boats are light, strong, fast, and ideal for fast cruising.

  • They can hold up to 6 passengers in the cockpit.
  • They are built for racing.

Inflatable Boats

These boats have inflatable tubes on the sides for fast and easy inflation and deflation. They also have flexible or rigid floors, depending on their size. Measuring 6-14’’, inflatable boats are ideal for beginners.

The common motors used in inflatables are outboard motors as they can be mounted on the rigid transom.

  • They are lightweight when deflated, making them easy to transport.
  • They are good for beginners.
  • They are not as stable as other powerboats.

On the other hand, inboard wakeboards have a V-drive engine system, huge wake, and deep hulls to get the boat in motion.

Factors to Consider When Choosing a Motor Boat

With over 30 motorboats to choose from, how can you find the perfect type for you? Below are factors you need to keep in mind before making the decision.

New or Preowned Motor Boat?

This should be one of the factors to consider when thinking about buying a boat. New boats are the best choice if you have saved for the purchase or money is not a problem. One advantage of buying a new boat is they have a warranty, so the repairs are covered in case of a malfunction.

What if you do not have enough money to get a new motorboat? Get a pre-owned one.  However, ensure that it is thoroughly checked by a motorboat professional.

Reason and Frequency of Using the Motor Boat

Motor Boat

When choosing a motorboat, understand the reason why you need the boat. Is it for fishing? Will it be one of your entertainment assets? Or will it serve as a sailing boat or for family trips? Once you discern why you need the boat, you will make the right choice when choosing the motorboat.

After knowing what the boat will be used for, determine how often you will need it. Why? If the boat is for fishing, you need to understand how long the fishing seasons in your area last. What if the boat is for family trips? You need to tell when the weather is great for outdoor sports and when schools take a break so you can take the kids for a vacation.

Motorboats depreciate fast in the first year of purchase. If you discover that you will only take the boat on the water once every few months, the best decision is to wait. By doing so, you will save yourself the agony of depreciation and maintenance fees.

Thinking about the reason and frequency of using the boat beforehand will help you maximize your investment.

Motor Boat Use

If you are getting confused looking at different motorboats, here are a few questions to reflect on and help you make the decision.

  • Are you looking to impress guests and business associates?
  • Do you want a motorboat that fits on a trailer?
  • Are you looking for a boat that can hold your family?
  • Is the boat for water sports?
  • Do you have experience in motorboating?
  • Are you looking for a multi-purpose boat?
  • Do you need help operating the powerboat?
  • How much boat loan payment can you afford monthly?

Finding answers to the above questions will help you minimize your options.

Your Location

Before buying a speedboat, consider whether you have access to a water body. If you do have access to a body of water, confirm whether the waterways are appropriate with the use and type of boat you want. For example, if you buy a motorboat for fishing and live close to a lake, check whether fishing is allowed on the lake.

The location also plays an important role in terms of storage. Are there slip options and marinas in your area? Are boats allowed on the streets by the homeowner’s association? Considering these options before purchase will help you find the best storage options when you buy the motorboat.

Type of Motor Boat

As previously stated, there are plenty of types of motorboats. Nevertheless, they all will not match your user needs. For starters, consider the size of the boat. How many people are you planning to have onboard?

Do you need space for fishing gear? Does your boat require sleeping accommodations? These factors will determine the size of the powerboat you need.

Besides, take into consideration the condition of the motorboat. For pre-owned motorboats, consider whether they will meet both your short and long-term goals. Moreover, calculate how much you will spend on maintenance as old boats need more repairs.

Type of Hull

There are three main types of powerboat hulls; displacement hulls, planing hulls, and semi-displacement hulls.

Displacement hulls are found in heavy vessels such as tugs and trawlers. They are fuel-efficient and can navigate through rough seas. Unfortunately, they are not fast, making them ideal for long distances.

Planing hulls, on the other hand, skim over the water at high speeds. Made of lightweight materials, planing hulls are powered by powerful engines. They, however, have high costs of maintenance and fuel consumption.

Semi-displacement hulls offer both speed and functionality. Although they are not as fast as planing hulls, they achieve reasonable speeds and cruise through rugged seas. Many boat builders and designers prefer semi-displacement motorboats.

Storage also plays a role when choosing the type of speedboat. Some motorboats can fit on trailers and others in a storage unit area. Keep in mind that the bigger the boat, the larger the storage space, trailer, and towing truck. Huge boats may force you to get permits and hire professionals when moving.

Also, pay attention to storage costs during winter or when you are not using the motorboat.

Motor Boat

How much will the motorboat cost you? By cost, consider the upfront cost of buying the boat, maintenance, storage fees, gear, fuel, accessories, trailers, and hitches. Besides, you need to set money aside for boat insurance.

Boat insurance covers physical damage on the motorboat, loss, and damage of personal effects on the boat and injuries in the event of a boating collision. Talk to your insurer before purchase to get a quote on expected insurance costs.

On the other hand, if you are not looking to pay upfront, you can look into historic lows. Today, there are plenty of marine lenders who can finance your boat loan for 10 to 20 years. Before choosing a marine lender, determine carefully whether your cash flow can sustain that long-term loan.

Legal System

Different states have different regulations. For example, some states require boat operators to own an operator’s card to prove their competence. Therefore, check what the laws require of you as a boat owner before the purchase.

The same applies to buying a pre-owned motor; ensure the seller transfers the motor boat’s ownership under your name. What if the seller cannot find proof of ownership? Ensure you get a declaration under oath from them about why they do not have proof of ownership.

You must have browsed through different boat brands when looking for a motorboat. Good thing, most motorboat brands have boat owners clubs where you can get crucial information about boats. Here, you can ask questions and tips about the brand before the purchase.

Besides, it is much cheaper to make an online purchase. However, if you have not made the final decision yet, attend a boat show to view and access the different models and brands available. Talk to experts and ask their opinions based on your intent on the motorboat.

You must ensure that a motorboat is seaworthy, especially pre-owned boats. Walk around the boat and access the vessel. Next, take the motorboat for a sea trial and gauge whether there are any problems.

If you are inexperienced in boating, a shiny, clean motorboat may blind you. Therefore, hire a professional marine surveyor as you may miss some important issues. Once you are done with the sea trial, haul the motorboat out of water for the surveyor to inspect the parts under the waterline. Inspecting the powerboat before the purchase will save you from making a wrong financial investment.

Whether buying a new or used boat, find out what else is included in the purchase. Have the seller provide you with a list of equipment included in the sale. You can then choose to take the whole package or shop the amenities on your own.

Question: Can I purchase a boat without qualifications?

Answer: Yes. Owning a private motorboat does not necessarily mean you need qualifications. However, there are advantages to having one.

Question: Which are the best motor boats for beginners?

Answer: Dinghies, bowriders, and pontoon boats are some of the best motor boats for beginners. They have simple propulsion systems and are more flexible.

Question: Should I buy a new or pre-owned motorboat?

Answer: Buying a new motorboat is the wisest decision because you get exactly what you are looking for. Sadly, new motorboats are expensive compared to pre-owned boats. Buying a used boat will save you money, and if not inspected thoroughly, you may find yourself with a lemon.

Question: What do I need to know about motorboat coverage?

Answer: Some small motorboats are covered on a homeowner’s policy, while large motorboats require a separate insurance policy. Also, boat insurance offers limited coverage on your personal effects.

Since there are numerous types of motorboats in the market, you find the ideal choice for you. Pick that motorboat that fits your needs, family, speed, and budget.

Personal watercraft are perfect for 1-2 riders, while cuddy cabins are family-friendly. In terms of entertaining guests, express cruiser boats, superyachts, and Megayachts are the real deal.

Take your time going through the different types of powerboats, ask expert opinions, and make an informed investment for your money.

Best Boat Trolling Motor Features for Saltwater Fishing

  • By Ric Burnley
  • August 21, 2024

The trolling motor was invented in 1934, but the first saltwater models didn’t hit the water until a decade ago. Why did it take almost 90 years for the trolling motor to reach coastal anglers? Durability. Combining saltwater, metal and electricity is a recipe for corrosion-forming electrolysis. Freshwater trolling motors died in salt and early saltwater models struggled to survive.

The latest generation of saltwater trolling motors feature durable components and smart design to thrive in the harsh marine environment. Leading the way, Garmin’s Force Kraken trolling motor is built with tough components and advanced features for the ultimate in boat control to catch more fish.

Garmin Force Kraken

What Is a Trolling Motor for Saltwater Fishing?

The first trolling motors were small electric kickers that attached to the stern of a jon boat. Bass anglers quickly realized the advantage of mounting an electric motor on the bow to silently maneuver the boat while fishing. Before long, a trolling motor was standard equipment on a bass sled. But the technology has been slow to reach saltwater.

A trolling motor is a small electric motor on a long shaft powered by large, rechargeable batteries. The shaft is mounted on the boat to hold the motor below the water. Using a hand control, remote control or foot pedal, I direct the motor to position the boat with more accuracy than possible with a gas outboard. With a trolling motor, I can silently troll for skittish fish, sneak into shallow water, patrol an area, maneuver handsfree and hold my boat in one position while I fish.

Trolling Motor Innovations

Modern trolling motors have some amazing features. The most significant advancement is connecting the trolling motor to a GPS network. With the satellite location information, I can program my trolling motor to follow a course, repeat a course, return to a location, jog at a low speed, and more. When I push the anchor lock button, the GPS manipulates the trolling motor so my boat stays in one position.

Manufacturers have focused on durability and power improvements to bring the technology to saltwater anglers. To survive salt and sand that plagues coastal fishing equipment, saltwater trolling motors like Garmin’s Force Kraken use corrosion-resistant materials, redundant systems, and sealed electronics.

The next challenge was generating power to pull a large saltwater fishing boat in strong current and wind. To produce enough torque to move heavy boats, the best saltwater trolling motors use brushless motors that draw less electricity and create more power. Garmin’s Force Kraken can produce up to 100 foot pounds of thrust with a shaft length up to 90 inches to run boats up to 35 feet long.

With the invention of forward-facing and 360 sonar, the trolling motor has become a convenient place to mount the sonar transducer. Attaching the transducer to the motor head, I can turn the transducer to direct the signal at potential targets while watching the return on a multi-function display.

Speaking of the fish finder display, Garmin’s Force Kraken trolling motor uses wireless connection to integrate with Garmin’s electronics systems. I control the Kraken with a handheld remote control, wireless foot pedal, smartphone or smartwatch. Combining these user-friendly features with a durable electric motor large and powerful enough to fish offshore and inshore, Garmin’s Force Kraken is a perfect example of the capabilities of modern saltwater trolling motors.

8 Top Saltwater Fishing Electric Trolling Motor Features

Adding GPS control and forward-facing sonar completely changed the trolling motor game. The small electric motors are now a boat control and fish-finding weapon. With the Garmin Force Kraken and other modern trolling motors, I program routes, hold my boat in one place, search fish in every direction and fish all day without worrying about battery power. Today’s trolling motors have a long list of features aimed at making fishing easier and more fun.

Anchor Deployment Capabilities

Without a doubt, the Garmin Force Kraken’s virtual anchor is its most valuable feature. I push a button on the remote and the trolling motor works to hold the boat in place. Garmin’s Force Kraken uses a two band GPS for pinpoint accuracy and lightning fast steering response.

Most trolling motors spin the motor 360 degrees to move the boat forward and backward. Instead of turning the whole motor, The Force Kraken uses a reverse gear which creates less turbulence and responds quicker saving time and energy. In swift current and strong wind, the Force Kraken controls my boat without missing a beat.

Garmin LiveScope Compatibility

In addition to advanced boat control capabilities, Garmin’s Force Kraken and other top-end trolling motors offer me a place to mount my forward facing sonar transducer. Forward-facing and 360 sonar allow me to see fish and structure in every direction below the water. The transducer turns 360 degrees to search for fish and structure up to 200 feet from the boat.

Some anglers mount the transducer to the end of a pole that is attached to a bracket on the side of the boat. Garmin’s Force Kraken allows me to mount the LiveScope transducer on the motor. To direct the sonar signal, I turn the trolling motor in the direction I’m searching. I route the transducer cable through the trolling motor shaft for a clean install and less chance of damaging the cord.

Battery Performance

Battery performance is a trolling motor’s Achilles heel. The electric motor runs on large batteries with limited capacity. Sealed lead-acid marine batteries are the standard; lithium batteries are lighter and more durable with longer battery life.

To extend the battery life, Garmin’s Force Kraken’s brushless motor conserves energy and produces more power than a brushed motor. Also, the efficient propeller and reverse gear reduce the motor’s work load. Running off 36 volts (that’s three 12 volt batteries), the Kraken will produce 100 pounds of thrust for hours of fishing.

User-Friendly Remote and Foot Pedal Control

A trolling motor is all about boat control, so controlling the motor is key to catching more fish. Garmin’s Force Kraken offers a floating, wireless remote control, a wireless foot pedal or integration with a smartphone or smartwatch. I can even operate the motor with my fish finder display.

The best trolling motor remotes have large, intuitive buttons and a small LED display of motor information. To operate the motor while I’m casting my fishing rod, a wireless foot pedal promotes hands-free fishing.

If the wireless systems fail, I can still control the motor with my phone. A few basic features, like anchor lock, are accessible on the base of the motor. When I’m searching for fish, I use the foot-pedal to cast and retrieve while covering water.

The handheld remote gives me quick access to anchor lock and other programming features. To unlock the motor’s full potential, I use the app and wireless connection to my fish finder to program routes and make precise location adjustments.

When the current is ripping and the wind is whipping, a trolling motor struggles to control a big boat. Garmin Force Kraken has a Turbo Mode that increases the power and torque for short periods when I need it most. Kicking the motor into Turbo Mode helps me limit power usage by saving maximum speed for the toughest motoring conditions.

Minimal Prop Wash and Obstruction Quick Reverse

A trolling motor quietly maneuvers the boat while I’m fishing. To prevent spooking the fish, Garmin’s Force Kraken combines an optimized propeller and silent operation. The propeller creates minimal bubbles and no cavitation and the shaft turns smoothly. When the boat is in anchor lock mode, the propeller spins forward and reverse instead of the shaft constantly spinning to keep the boat in one place.

Pivot Style Mount

Most saltwater boats don’t have a wide open deck in the bow like a bass boat. Garmin’s Force Kraken uses a small pivot style mount to secure the motor with a minimal footprint.

When I arrive to the fishing grounds, I rotate the shaft to unlock the release and then slide and pivot the motor head into the water. The pivot mount is easy to remove from the boat and requires less space in the bow, so it fits more saltwater boats.

Composite Shaft

A long shaft on a large saltwater boat takes a lot of abuse. In rough seas, the powerful motor wants to bend and break the shaft. Saltwater trolling motors have an indestructible and corrosion resistant composite shaft. The best saltwater trolling motors, like Garmin’s Force Kraken, have a shaft that includes a conduit to route a fish finder transducer cable.

The final choice is choosing the shaft length. The trolling motor’s composite shaft reaches from the bow to below the water. Measure the distance and choose a shaft length that will keep the motor below the water in rough seas. An easy-to-use online tutorial makes it easy to build a total boat system.

Garmin’s Force Kraken is available in four sizes, from 48 inches to 90 inches, to cover boats from 18 feet to 35 feet long. The price at Bass Pro Shops depends on the shaft length, with a 48-inch model going for $3799.99 to $4299.99 for the 90-inch motor.

Alternatives to the Garmin Force Kraken

It’s a good time to be in the market for a trolling motor. The most advanced technology is now available for saltwater trolling motors with up to 115-pounds of thrust and a 100-inch shaft. And the latest motors are finally winning the battle against corrosion with space-age materials and design. The race is on to create the most advanced trolling motor that is easiest to use. All this is great news for saltwater anglers looking to add a trolling motor to their boat.

Elevate Your Fishing With Advanced Trolling Motor Features

Trolling motors for saltwater are more powerful and durable than ever before. I use my trolling motor to troll, power drift, fish structure and silently search for fish. Trolling motors may be new to saltwater fishing, but the advanced boat-control features make me wonder how I ever lived without a trolling motor on my saltwater boat.

What is the difference between a trolling motor and an outboard motor?

A trolling motor is a small electric motor used to maneuver the boat while fishing. A gas-powered outboard quickly propels the boat to and from the fishing grounds. The trolling motor is less powerful and slower, but the motor spins 360 degrees so I can turn the boat quickly and accurately without the noise and commotion of a gas engine. I use my gas motor to travel to my fishing spot, then I turn off the outboard and drop the trolling motor into the water. With the small electric motor, I precisely position the boat to cast or jig more accurately.

How do I know what size trolling motor I need?

Each trolling motor manufacturer has online tutorials and guides for choosing and fitting a trolling motor to any boat. The rule of thumb is a longer and heavier boat requires more thrust and a longer shaft.

How fast can a troll motor go?

A trolling motor isn’t designed for speed. However, a trolling motor must have enough power and torque to control the boat in adverse weather and water conditions. Garmin’s Force Kraken has a special Turbo Mode that boosts power when the going gets rough. It also uses a silent and responsive steering unit and a unique reverse gear to improve boat control and save battery power.

The Smallest Motor Boats for Fishing: A Guide to Choosing the Right One

When it comes to fishing boats, size isn’t always everything. In fact, sometimes the smallest boats can be the best option for a variety of reasons. Whether you’re looking for a boat that’s easy to transport, store, and maintain, or you simply prefer the simplicity and maneuverability of a smaller craft, there are plenty of great options out there for small motor boats for fishing.

Table of Contents

Understanding Motor Boats

Motor boats are a popular choice for fishing enthusiasts who want to get out on the water and catch some fish. These boats are powered by engines, which provide a reliable and efficient way to travel across the water. There are many different types of motor boats available, ranging from small, lightweight models to larger, more powerful vessels.

When choosing a motor boat for fishing, it’s important to consider a few key factors. These include the size and weight of the boat, the type of engine it has, and the features and amenities that are included. Some of the most important things to think about when choosing a motor boat for fishing include:

  • Size and weight: Smaller boats are generally easier to maneuver and handle, but they may not be as stable in rough water. Larger boats, on the other hand, can handle bigger waves and provide more space for equipment and passengers, but they may be more difficult to transport and store.
  • Engine type: There are two main types of engines used in motor boats: inboard and outboard. Inboard engines are typically more powerful and efficient, but they can be more expensive to maintain. Outboard engines are generally less expensive and easier to maintain, but they may not be as powerful or efficient.
  • Features and amenities: Some motor boats come equipped with a variety of features and amenities, such as fish finders, livewells, and rod holders. These can be very helpful for fishing, but they may also add to the cost of the boat.

Factors to Consider When Choosing a Motor Boat

When choosing a motor boat for fishing, there are several factors to consider. Here are some of the most important ones:

The size of the boat is an important factor to consider when choosing a motor boat for fishing. A larger boat will provide more space for gear and passengers, while a smaller boat will be easier to maneuver and transport. It’s important to choose a size that fits your needs and budget.

Type of Fishing

The type of fishing you plan to do will also play a role in the type of motor boat you choose. If you plan to do a lot of offshore fishing, you’ll need a boat that is designed for rough waters and can handle big waves. If you plan to fish in calm waters, a smaller boat may be more suitable.

Your budget is another important factor to consider when choosing a motor boat for fishing. Boats can range in price from a few thousand dollars to tens of thousands of dollars or more. It’s important to choose a boat that fits your budget and provides the features and capabilities you need.

When considering these factors, it’s important to keep in mind that safety should always be a top priority. Make sure the boat you choose is designed for the type of fishing you plan to do and is equipped with all the necessary safety features, such as life jackets, fire extinguishers, and navigation lights.

Top Smallest Motor Boats for Fishing

When it comes to fishing boats, smaller is often better. Smaller boats are easier to maneuver and transport, and they can often access fishing spots that larger boats can’t. Here are some of the top smallest motor boats for fishing:

Maintenance and Care of Small Motor Boats

Maintaining a small motor boat is crucial to ensure its longevity and safety. Neglecting regular maintenance can lead to costly repairs or even accidents. Here are some basic tips to keep your small motor boat in good condition:

1. Check the Engine

The engine is the heart of the boat, and regular checks are necessary to ensure it is running smoothly. Check the oil levels and change the oil at least once a year, or as recommended by the manufacturer. Inspect the fuel lines and replace them if they are cracked or worn. Check the spark plugs and replace them if they are fouled or worn out.

2. Clean the Hull

The hull of the boat is exposed to water, salt, and other elements, which can cause damage over time. Regular cleaning can prevent corrosion and keep the boat looking good. Use a mild detergent and water to clean the hull, and rinse it thoroughly with fresh water. Wax the hull at least once a year to protect it from UV rays and other environmental factors.

3. Maintain the Electrical System

The electrical system of a small motor boat is essential for navigation, communication, and safety. Check the battery regularly and replace it if it is weak or damaged. Inspect the wiring and connections for signs of wear or corrosion. Keep the electrical system dry and clean to prevent short circuits and other issues.

4. Store the Boat Properly

Proper storage is essential to keep the boat in good condition. Store the boat in a dry, covered area to protect it from the elements. If you store the boat outdoors, cover it with a tarp to prevent rain, snow, and other debris from accumulating on it. Remove the battery and store it in a dry place during the off-season.

5. Follow the Manufacturer’s Recommendations

Always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for maintenance and care. The owner’s manual provides valuable information on how to maintain the boat and keep it in good condition. If you are unsure about any aspect of maintenance or care, consult a professional for advice.

Pros and Cons of Small Motor Boats

Small motor boats have become increasingly popular among fishing enthusiasts due to their numerous advantages. Some of these advantages include:

  • Lower cost to operate: Small boats generally require a small engine, which uses less fuel than a bigger boat. This makes them more cost-effective to operate in the long run.
  • Easier to tow: Most small boats weigh less than 5,000 pounds on a trailer and can be towed with a mid-size SUV, van, or compact truck. This eliminates the need to invest in a large truck to tow the boat.
  • Increased maneuverability: Small boats are easier to maneuver in tight spaces, making them ideal for fishing in small lakes and rivers.
  • Better access to shallow waters: Small boats can navigate shallow waters more easily than larger boats, allowing anglers to reach areas where bigger boats cannot go.
  • Faster acceleration: Small boats generally have a better power-to-weight ratio, which means they can achieve faster acceleration and higher speeds.

Disadvantages

While small motor boats have many advantages, they also have some disadvantages to consider. Some of these include:

  • Limited space: Small boats have limited space for equipment, storage, and passengers. This can make it challenging to accommodate larger groups or haul larger fish.
  • Reduced stability: Small boats are generally less stable than larger boats, which can make them more difficult to handle in choppy water or heavy wind.
  • Limited range: Small boats have limited fuel capacity, which can limit their range and the amount of time anglers can spend on the water.
  • Limited comfort: Small boats generally have fewer amenities and less comfort than larger boats, which can make long fishing trips less enjoyable.

When it comes to choosing a small motor boat for fishing, there are many factors to consider. It’s important to think about the type of water you’ll be fishing in, the size of the boat, and your budget.

2) The Supra Comp TS6M

motorboat fishing

The Supra Comp TS6 was made from 1986-1992. While that might seem like it’s a bit dated, it definitely stands the test of time.

Not only is it a great versatile inboard boat that works well as a runaround as well as a fishing boat, they normally come with a few extra amenities because they have been improved upon by their previous owners.

The TS6M is a great 19-foot fiberglass boat They come with the standard sound system, ski towers, and vinyl upholstery. Often, you will see them for sale with the upholstery updated as well as new paint-jobs. If not, the money you save on buying a used boat can go toward a custom paint job.

Just make sure you consult with a marine specialist when buying a used boat.

Rib Boats with Inboard Motors

Ridged inflatable boats (or Rib boats) are great for fun day trips in freshwater.

Some of the best options for RIB boats are from AB Inflatable.

3) Zodiac MilPro

The Zodiac Milpro line of Rigid Inflatable Boats (or RIB boats) is one of the only RIB boats that offer a single or a double inboard diesel (with water jet) engine. They also offer a sterndrive or surface drive. They are used mostly by the coast guard as well as other professionals who work on the water.

Because they are so well-regarded as tough and hearty, they are often seen as indestructible.

Their tubes are foam filled and D shaped in order to fit their hulls, which are made of aluminum, carbon-reinforced plastic, or glass-reinforced plastic. Their inflatable collars are made of heavy-duty CSM/neoprene, polyurethane-coated fabrics which can withstand so much.

The foam they use is from Zodiac’s own Durarib system.

Aluminum Boats with Inboard Motors

Aluminum boats are great for tooling around, fishing, or just spending some time out on the lake or river.

4) Weldcraft Renegade

motorboat fishing

If you’re looking for a great aluminum boat with an inboard motor, try the Weldcraft Renegade on for size. This also has an inboard jet, so you can get to your favorite fishing spot quickly.

The Renegade is powered by either a catalyzed 5.7L MEFI-5 with an American Turbine SD-309 inboard pump or a 200HP Optimax Sportjet.

Both of those options will allow for some great fishing, crabbing, cruising, or for some water skiing. It comes in two different models: the Renegade 18 and the Renegade 20.

They both offer a heavy-duty fold down top with:

  • Curtains along the side and a backdrop,
  • two folding seats on adjustable pedestals,

Center Console Boats with Inboard Motors

Boats with center consoles are usually used as workboats. The steering consoles are mounted in the center of the boat. These engines are powerful and can get to places quickly.

6) Dusky 233

This classic center console inboard has been around for a while and you can find them on a few used boat sites. Of course, you can find both inboard and outboard options on boat trader sites. It has an easy-going engine made for the tinkerer.

If you’re the type that likes working on your own boat, the Dusky engine 350 parts are easily found in most part stores (even West Marine). With all the weight riding forward, the ride is smooth and soft. It’s also spacious and has plenty of room off the transom.

The 23′ Dusky 233 inboard has a hull made of fiberglass and is made for skiing and fishing. It comes with:

  • The standard rod holders,
  • beverage holders,
  • bench seats,
  • and anchor locker.

They are also available with GPS and plotters, VHF, and compass.

What are the best inboard gasoline engines?

If you have a bit of money to burn and you’re looking to upgrade the inboard engine on your boat, here are some of the best boating engines on the market today.

  • The Mercury Mercruiser 3.0 TKS: This is great at powering small pontoons, runabouts, and small commercial fishing boats. It’s good for everything because it is both reliable, has excellent fuel economy, and has a great reputation for being a terrific performer. It has a patented turnkey start (TKS) and has 135 hp.
  • The Crusader 6.0: The Crusader is a direct fuel injection inboard motor. Powered by gasoline, it has 375 hp, which is a hefty engine for a mid to small boat.
  • The Ilmore MV8 5.7L: The MV8 is a durable, efficient, and reliable recreational inboard engine. The 324.9 hp engine has been certified for tournament use (for and by the American Water Ski Association).

6 types of marine engines

When it comes to picking out boats and engines, there are an array of choices for boaters to choose from. The principle is the same as any other internal combustion engine (like the one found in your truck or car).

Except that, instead of setting wheels in motion, a boat motor turns the propeller, via the drive shaft.

There are six different types of motors including:

Inboard drives.

Otherwise known as an inboard motor, these are engines enclosed in your boat. The rudder, props, and driveshaft are all located under your boat. These are powered by diesel or gasoline and are available in single or twin engines.

The most common type are 4- or 6- cylinder engines. Another option is to have a marine V-drive engine, which is located closer to the stern. Inboard engines are the types of engines we will be focusing on, so I’ll delve deeper into this a little later.

Outboard motors.

This is a motor located on the outside of the boat. It is the most common type among freshwater boats: whether fishing or pleasure craft. They are self-contained and are mounted to the transom (or the rear wall) of the boat.

The mounted unit will contain an engine, steering control, and a propeller. Some even have cables which help pivot the entire motor, to help with steering.

The 2- and 3- cylinder versions are the most common outboard motor but there are some beefy V-6 and V-8 options out there.

Sterndrives (AKA Inboard/Outboard).

Like the outboard motor, these are located outside the boat but is mounted inboard, in front of the transom. Some people say this is the best of both worlds.

It can be pivoted to move up out of the water (like other outboard motors) but it gives the boater more control (like inboard motors). They are also commonly bigger than outboard motors with the most common sizes being 4-cylinder and V-6 engines.

Surface Drives.

These are used by boats that have to perform a lot: speedboats, boats used for racing, etc. They’re also used in large boats due to the fact that the propellers are replaced with jet drives to push the boat through the water. The water is drawn in through a jet under the hull, then flows through impellers, which are hooked up to a nozzle. The nozzle is what steers the boat.

Jet drives accelerate quickly but aren’t the best option when it comes to fuel efficiency, so watch out for that.

Pod Drives.

A pod drive uses a propeller under the engine, which helps pull the boat through the water, instead of being pushed through the water (like with the other engine types). They normally come in pairs, in order to help with maneuvering through the water. This is extremely helpful when it comes to docking the boat or squeezing it through some tight spaces.

How do inboard marine engines work?

motorboat fishing

An inboard engine is somewhat similar to a car engine. It creates power in the same way and drives the boat the same way a motor powers a car. After all, they are both combustible engines which have cylinders which use fuel. Sparks ignite the fuel (mixed with air) creating an explosion, pushing the pistons into place.

These pistons are connected to crankshafts (otherwise called drive shafts). As the pistons are pushed down, the drive shaft spins, which moves the vehicle.

As far as boats are concerned, the propellers, are connected to the drive shaft. So when the drive shaft spins, so do the propellers.

One main difference between a car engine and an inboard engine is how the inboard engine cools itself.

While cars use radiators, inboard engines use the surrounding water. The water is pumped into the inboard, cools the engine, then is pushed back out with the engine exhaust. This is why you’ll see water coming from the back of a boat with an inboard engine.

Now while they work somewhat similarly, they are not interchangeable. Don’t let anyone convince you to use a car engine for an inboard motor. For one, the inboard motor works a lot harder than a car engine. For example, getting a four-ton boat to power through the water at a decent speed is the same as towing a 24-foot trailer up six percent grade incline for ten miles, using a V-6 engine.

In addition, car engines don’t heat up as much as marine engines do, because they don’t have to work as hard.

How to take care of an inboard marine engine

There are a few ways to take care of your inboard engine:

  • Flush your engine regularly
  • Prepare for the spring
  • Winterize your engine

How do you flush an inboard engine correctly?

Flushing your inboard engine can be a fairly simple process.

There are two main reasons why you would want to flush a marine engine. Both of those reasons are due to avoid future issues with your boat:

  • In order to reduce the corrosion from the saltwater.
  • As a part of the winterization process, in order to keep the engine block from freezing and cracking.

Running your boat in saltwater means that you’re basically running your boat through a sea of corrosive liquid. However, flushing your inboard engine regularly can keep your important engine parts free of rust and deterioration.

Luckily, most new engines let you hook up a hose into the intake, which means that you can just flush your engine right there. It’s as easy as watering a flower garden.

  • Cover the air intake to prevent debris from getting in while you flush it
  • Hook up a hose to the water intake, let the water start flowing, then let the engine idle. You’ll know it’s clean when the water running through it, comes out clean.
  • Make sure you check the prop shaft (it should turn without any stiffness), stuffing box (no leakage, wear, or tear), water pump impeller (check for rust, cracking, or dry spots), and engine hoses (replace them if they look like they’re starting to crack).
  • Open the engine compartment to check for scents. If it’s starting to smell, look around. If you smell fuel, look for a leak in the fuel line, fuel filter, or the tank fitting.

These easy steps ensure that your engine will run smoothly and will prevent bigger problems down the road. It might seem as though you can push these tasks for later. However, waiting too long can lead to engine room flooding, rust, overheating issues, or misalignment.

How do you prepare your inboard engine for spring?

You’ll need to prepare your boat when you take it out for its first excursion during the spring or summer. If you didn’t do this when winterizing your boat, make sure to:

  • Change the engine oil
  • Replace the oil filters
  • Purchase a spare filter to keep with you on the boat

Make sure there isn’t any creamy oil in the lower unit of your engine. Creamy oil means water. Then, hook up your battery and your engine should be good to go.

How do you winterize an inboard motor?

When boat season is over, you’re going to need to winterize your inboard motor. You can do this by checking the antifreeze. You can do this in for steps:

  • Gas it up!

Make sure the tank is full of gas. This decreases the chance that, in the winter, air will get into the tank.

Add a bit of stabilizer in with the fuel. Your owner’s manual should suggest the proper amount. Stabilizer ensures that there isn’t buildup in your fuel tank when it sits for a long period of time. Not just the tank, but also your fuel lines, injectors, and carbonators.

Warm the engine by running it in the water or by running it with an adapter.

  • Add some antifreeze.

In addition to adding antifreeze, make sure you also spray some fogging oil into the engine. Antifreeze prevents any water and condensation in your engine from freezing. Fogging oil protects the internal surfaces of your engine from corrosion. It also lubricates the cylinder walls and can prevent it from scuffing the next time you start the engine in the spring or summer.

  • Change the oil and the oil filter

Yes, you can leave this for the spring. However, since your engine is already warm, why not drain and change the oil now? If the transmission and engine are contaminated with dirt, you don’t want it doing any harm in the winter.

  • Do a final check.

While you’re at it, feel free to do a routine check for each of these systems and parts:

  • Exhaust system: look for corrosion
  • Hoses and clamps: look for damage
  • Seal off any cracks to avoid build-up
  • Remove the battery and keep it on a trickle charger
  • Keep bug repellant on board
  • Acquire a good winter boat cover
  • Stay vigilant and make sure it is insured for theft and damage

The Takeaway:

There are plenty of engine options to choose from: between inboard to outboard to surface drives. Inboard motors are great for waterskiing, wakeboarding, and other leisure and sports activities because of its amazing wake control.

They can also tow well and clear transom for tow ropes.

Take proper care of your engine.

No matter which inboard engine you decide to purchase, make sure you are taking proper care of it. Taking good care of an inboard motor will prevent any bigger issues down the road.

Flush the engine as often as you can. While you’re waiting for the water to run clear through the engine, check any hoses, connectors, pumps, stuffing box, and make sure to look for the smell of fuel in the engine compartment.

You should also winterize your engine properly and make sure the oil and filters are changed before you start it back up in the spring. You can change them in the spring before you start it up for the season, but it will be much easier to do that maintenance when you’re winterizing your boat .

Needing a change?

The idea of changing out an old inboard engine for a new one, know that there are a lot more things to consider than just the price tag of the new engine. There are a few things you should do if you do find that this option is the best for you:

  • Make a list of the yards and mechanics around you who have done similar repowering jobs.
  • Look at yelp reviews and ask around to see if customers are happy with their service.
  • Consider changes you’ll have to make if the horsepower will increase or if the motor itself will be lighter. For example, if you’re swapping from an old diesel engine to a newer, lighter model. If you’ll be making changes like this, contact the boat manufacturer to see if you’ll need to make any structural alterations.
  • Consider the changes necessary if you convert from gas to diesel.
  • Also, consider the size of the engine. Will there be room for access?
  • Will the electrical gauges work with the new engine?

Lastly, don’t let anyone tell you that you can swap an inboard motor with an automotive crate engine because (while they are similar in theory), there are enough differences to cause problems.

Jonathan Dickinson State Park was named after a shipwrecked Quaker: 5 notable facts

Portrait of Kimberly Miller

Hugging the western reach of the Indian River Lagoon, Jonathan Dickinson State Park is a diverse ecosystem that includes ancient sand dunes, habitat for threatened species, magnificent bird watching, Trapper Nelson's old cabin and multiple amenities for humans, such as biking, hiking kayaking and camping.

What it doesn't include is golfing, but environmentalists fear the Florida Department of Environmental Protection is considering the addition of two 18-hole golf courses and one nine-hole golf course to the 10,500-acre park.

Opposition is mounting to the golf course plan. As the proposal is debated, here are five things to know about Jonathan Dickinson State Park.

When was Jonathan Dickinson State Park founded and where is it?

Jonathan Dickinson State Park is in Martin County on land used during World War II for a secret radar training school called Camp Murphy. The camp was named after Col. William Herbert Murphy, who was a pioneer in adding radio equipment to military aircraft. It accommodated about 6,000 men and had nearly 1,000 buildings.

The camp was decommissioned in 1944 and the property was transferred from the U.S. government to the State of Florida. It became a park in 1950 .

Who was Jonathan Dickinson?

Jonathan Dickinson was a Quaker merchant from Jamaica who was shipwrecked on Jupiter Island with his family and other passengers in 1696. Dickinson kept a diary of his journey from the shipwreck site to St. Augustine, which included multiple challenges including hostile encounters with local indigenous tribes.

Dickinson and his family eventually reached Philadelphia, which was their original destination. Dickinson served twice as Philadelphia's mayor in in the early 1700s.

Who is Trapper Nelson and how did he die?

Trapper Nelson is a legendary character in South Florida whose life story is a little murky . Born and baptized Vincent Natulkiewicz, he had a homestead far up the Loxahatchee River where he was self-sufficient, living with no electricity or municipal water supply. After World War II, he converted his homestead into a tourist attraction and became known as the "Wildman of the Loxahatchee."

He used his profits to amass about 1,000 acres of riverfront land. His death in 1968 at the age of 59 is surrounded by myth. He was found dead by a friend at his homestead. That part is not disputed. But a relative once wrote to The Palm Beach Post that no one in the family believed that he had committed suicide, which was what the coroner said.

A 2018 article in The Post attempted to clarify parts of the story by asking for more information from Josh Liller, who at the time was the historian and collections manager for the Loxahatchee River Historical Society. Part of what Liller said was that there was no evidence that Trapper Nelson was murdered, and that he had been dead for at least five days when he was found. It is sometimes reported that he was dead two to three days before being found, Liller said.

Bucket list: 55 best must-try things to do, tourist attractions in Palm Beach County

The 90-page transcript of the coroner's jury "makes a very compelling case for suicide as a reasonable ruling. Some people who knew him and some of the longtime park rangers at JDSP (Jonathan Dickinson State Park) were of the opinion the death was an accident (which is what I subscribe to as the most likely explanation)," Liller wrote to The Post at the time.

What is there to do at Jonathan Dickinson State Park?

Jonathan Dickinson is the largest state park in southeast Florida. The park includes multiple habitats, such as coastal sand hills, upland lakes, scrub forests and the Loxahatchee River, one of only two federally designated wild and scenic rivers in Florida. It also has the largest amount of protected scrub jay habitat in southeast Florida.

It has 90 campsites, paved and off-road biking trails and opportunities for boating, fishing, hiking, horseback riding and swimming. There are deluxe safari tents available for a more upscale camping experience. The safari tents include a coffee maker, a mini-refrigerator, rugs, lamps, electrical outlets and air conditioning.

How much does it cost to go to Jonathan Dickinson State Park?

It costs $6 per vehicle with two to eight people. A single-occupant vehicle or a motorcycle costs $4. Pedestrians and bicyclists pay $2.

There is a shop with souvenirs and snacks at the park as well as a food and beverage provider. Palmetto on the Loxahatchee features beer, wine and food in an outdoor setting overlooking the Loxahatchee River.

At the concession, you can rent canoes, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, motor boats and single-speed cruiser bicycles.

10 Cheap, Affordable Boats for 2024

motorboat fishing

Table of Contents

Last Updated on May 22, 2024 by Boatsetter Team

Say ‘cheap boats’ and many people get the wrong impression, because they often think that ‘cheap’ equates to poor quality. That’s too bad because in reality, the most affordable boats on the water today are usually quite well built.

Modern standards are high and although these boats may be very simple and utilitarian, their owners tend to love them. Plus, simple, inexpensive boats are easy to maintain, easy to operate, and have very low operational expenses . On top of all that you can defray what expenses there are—and potentially even make a profit—by allowing other people to rent your boat . But, what constitutes a cheap boat in the first place?

While $10,000 isn’t exactly chump change it’s a tiny sum in the world of boat-buying. So for the purposes of this post, we’ll use that as our price ceiling and stick with looking at boats under 10K ( listed alphabetically from A to Z ).

Already Own a Boat? Earn an Average of $20K by Renting it Out on Boatsetter

1. Bass Pro Shops Pond Prowler 8

Bass Pro Shops Pond Prowler 8

With a list cost of $619.99 this is just about the cheapest boat you’re likely to run across. True, you’ll want to spend $300 or so to get an electric trolling motor and a battery, but for anglers who fish alone on small bodies of water the Bass Pro Shops Pond Prowler 8 will get the job done.

It has a swivel seat, recessed beverage and tackle holders, bow and stern motor mounts, and is pre-wired for electric motors. The polyethylene hull and deck material is virtually indestructible, and with a footprint just eight feet long and four feet wide, you can slide this 100-pound fishing machine right into the back of a pickup truck.

  • MSRP: $629.99

Visit Bass Pro Shops to learn more.

2. Gheenoe 16 Super

Gheenoe 16 Super

The Gheenoe 16 Super is sort of like a boat crossed with a canoe, with a canoe-like entry that widens aft to a 4’7” beam . That gives it plenty of room for a pair of people, and since these boats are most commonly used for fishing, the 16 Super comes with swiveling pedestal seats, rod holders, and an aerated livewell.

MSRP is $6,100 and a trailer adds another $2,525 so there’s some cash left in the budget for an outboard, and the 16 Super can take up to 40 HP. Note that this is also one of the few boats in this roundup which can also be rigged with a console (an additional $625) and can be steered with a wheel as opposed to a tiller arm.

  • MSRP:  $6,100 (without a motor or trailer)

Visit Gheenoe Boats to learn more.

3. Hobie Mirage Compass Duo

Hobie Mirage Compass Duo

The Hobie Mirage Compass Duo may be svelte with a beam of just under three feet, but its 13’6” length is capable of handling bigger waters than one might imagine. It’s propelled by human power via Hobie’s Mirage Drive pedal-and-fins system and with two people pedaling, can move along at jogging speeds. Plus, since you don’t need to buy a motor this tandem kayak’s list cost of $3,999 is all you’ll need to spend.

The Mirage Compass Duo also comes with four tracks installed so you can add items like fishing rod holders or cupholders to customize the boat as you please.

  • MSRP: $3,999

Visit Hobie to learn more.

4. Lowe 1032 Jon

Lowe 1032 Jon

The Lowe 1032 Jon is one of the most affordable aluminum boats you’ll ever find. True, it’s very small with a length of just 10’3” and a beam of four feet. Capacity is limited to 180 pounds, and maximum power is a mere 3.5 HP. But price is off-the-charts affordable with an MSRP of $1,089.

Spend a few hundred dollars for an electric motor or closer to $1,000 for a miniature gas motor, and you can afford to buy an entire fleet without breaking our price ceiling. Wait a sec—what about a trailer? Why bother with one? At 80 pounds it’s easy enough to shove the 1032 into the back of a pick-up, or even on top of a car’s roof rack.

5. Lund 1648 Jon Boat

Lund 1648 Jon Boat

Boatbuilder Lund is known for making aluminum boats of all shapes and sizes, and while they have smaller, even more affordable boats, their 1648 Jon goes for a hair over $4,000 and has a lot of capabilities for the price. Add in a trailer and a 20 horse outboard, and you’ll still be well under the 10K mark while enjoying a roomy 15’9” Jon boat with two bench seats and enough power to cruise at over 20 MPH even with a couple of people aboard.

This boat has a flat bottom design so it’s stable (though it could be a bit bumpy in open waters when the waves kick up), and its light 275-pound weight means that you could also power it with an electric motor for use on small bodies of water.

  • MSRP: $4,076

6. Sea Eagle 14 SR

sea eagle 14 sr

Sea Eagle builds inflatable kayaks, fishing boats, and tenders, and their 14 SR can be had on the cheap. Plus, no trailer is necessary because when your day of boating is done you can simply deflate the boat, roll it up, and stuff it in the trunk of your car. Features include five air chambers, an aluminum bench seat, oars, a carry bag, a patch kit, and a foot pump. The 14 SR has an unusual perk, too, in that it has a patented inflatable drop-stitch keel that assists in tracking and handling. Sea Eagle sells their boats in different packages so in this case you could go stripped and pay the bare minimum, or choose a complete package (which includes a 9.9 HP Honda outboard and additional seating) for $5,999 and still go home with money in your pocket.

  • MSRP: $3,149

7. Sea-Doo Spark

seadoo spark

Personal watercrafts count as boats, too, and the Sea-Doo Spark is an eminently affordable PWC . Starting at a $6,999 MSRP, the Spark was improved for the 2024 model year with a new look and styling, an 4.5-inch LCD gauge display, and padded reboarding points to make climbing on more comfortable. The base version blasts across the water’s surface with up to two people aboard thanks to a 60 HP Rotax 900 ACE engine. The Spark’s Polytec hull is rugged and light and has an integrated 0.71-gallon glove box.

Pony up another $1,300 and you can get the “3 Up” version, which has seating for three people and boasts a larger 900 HP Rotax engine. Both models also have a tow hook so you can pull the kids around the lake on tow-toys.

8. Princecraft Starfish 156 WT

While the Princecraft Starfish 156 WT is a simple, straightforward, modified-V aluminum boat, it also is a cut above the norm for boats of this nature. It has unusual seating with two benches aft, a split center bench, and one bench seat in the bow, plus an integrated stowage compartment, a deployable reboarding ladder, and a fish ruler. It’s also built from 5052 H36 marine grade aluminum that’s .072” thick in the bottom, .061” thick in the sides, and features double plating at the chines. True, you’ll need to spend a couple thousand more to power the boat, but 15 horses will be plenty of juice so you can put together the package and still come in under the $10,000 budget ceiling.

  • MSRP: est. $6,672

9. Sun Dolphin Pro 120

Sun Dolphin Pro 120

Boats made of rotomolded polyethylene have an advantage over aluminum or fiberglass in that they’re nearly indestructible and essentially maintenance-free. One such utility craft that can take heavy-duty abuse, be put away wet, and will still look and work great is the Sun Dolphin American 12 Jon. This 110-pound, 12’ long poly Jon boat comes with a limited lifetime warranty and has several molded-in features like bench seats, drink holders, oarlock sockets, and fishing rod holders. You can power it with an electric motor and a battery or drop on a gasoline outboard up to six HP then add in a trailer, and the entire package shouldn’t get much north of $5,000.

  • MSRP: est. $699

Visit Sun Dolphin to learn more.

10. Tracker Grizzly 1648 Jon

Tracker Grizzly 1754 Jon

The all-welded Tracker Grizzly 1648 Jon costs just a hair under $7,000 with a trailer and you can complete the package by adding a 15-hp outboard (which generally costs under $3,000). While the boat won’t exactly be a speed demon you’ll be able to get on plane with a couple of people aboard and head for the fishing grounds.

This model has a lockable bowdeck compartment, 0.10” thick aluminum plating in the hull and a 0.190” thick aluminum deck, a seven-degree modified-V hull, and the interior is coated in textured Sure Tread nonskid liner. This is one of the few options within our price range to include a lockable stowage compartment, and the 1648 Jon also has fore and aft pedestal seat bases.
