Vida led quite the active life

The motor yacht Vida, a large clipper-bowed diesel yacht,
considered Newport Harbor her home port from 1939 to 1942. Vida was
234-feet long, with a beam of 34 feet and a draft of 12 feet. She was powered by two Winton diesel engines, each had 422-brake horsepower.
With this power, she could cruise at 16 knots.
Originally named Cambrioas, she was designed by Cox and Stevens of
New York and built by Pussy and Jones of Wilmington, Del., in 1930.
When Erle P. Halliburton, a member of the Newport Harbor Yacht Club,
acquired the yacht, he changed her name to Vida, after his daughter.
Vida was registered in Honduras, where Halliburton had extensive oil
and cattle holdings.
Vida was usually moored at the old county dock near the Arches.
Many times she anchored in the Lido Turning Basin. The yacht’s boats
were lowered, and a shore boat service was established at Newport
Harbor Yacht Club.
Vida was a very active yacht. Cruises were made to Alaska, Mexico
and Honduras, as were weekend trips to Catalina. She was fitted with
a gyrostabilizer system that, when turned on, provided a smooth ride
for the guests.
In early 1942, the U.S. Navy requisitioned Vida. Before turning
the yacht over to the Navy, Halliburton had the ship’s saluting
cannon removed. This was donated to the Newport Harbor Yacht Club,
where it stands today, adjacent to the flagpole, and is used on
ceremonial occasions.
After an extensive conversion to a warship, Vida was commissioned
as the USS Crystal (PY-25) on Feb. 21, 1942. After a training and
shakedown period in the San Pedro area, Crystal, as she had been
re-christened, reported for duty with the Hawaiian Sea Frontier in
May of 1942.
From May 1942 to Nov. 8, 1945, Crystal led a very active naval
life. She was based at Midway Island, where she operated with
destroyers on anti-submarine patrol. Crystal was also sent to the
western Pacific as a weather station ship. On Nov. 17, 1945, she was
sent back to San Francisco.
The USS Crystal was decommissioned on March 6, 1946, and offered
to Halliburton, who decided against accepting his yacht because the
cost of putting her back into “yacht condition.” Crystal was acquired
by other people who used her as a freighter and passenger vessel in
Central and South America.

Customised features
As with all Heesen series yachts, Vida includes several highly customised features designed to meet the specific requirements of her highly experienced owner. As she will serve as a mothership for a fleet of sportfish boats, Vida’s original design for a forward tender garage was reworked to create a larger owner’s suite, with the foredeck itself now catering to two tenders. Her sundeck hardtop has also been raised six inches to allow for more headroom – a feature that will be carried forward to future models – with the resulting design carefully considered so as not to upset the perfect balance of her profile.
First impressions
Muscular, elegant, angular yet svelte, Vida’s exterior lines come from the board of Omega Architects’ Frank Laupman. Like other yachts in the 55m Steel series, Vida’s profile is clean and crisp, with characteristic floor-to-ceiling windows providing uninterrupted views while flooding the interior with natural light.
Step aboard
Stunning both in layout and in style, Vida’s interior impresses from the very first moment you step on board. Based on architecture developed by Francesco Paszkowski and Margherita Casprini, her finish and décor comes from Be Design in Boca Raton, Florida – the studio’s first yacht interior project.

Motor Yacht
Vida is the third in the successful 55m FDHF Steel class, which features muscular exterior lines by Frank Laupman of Omega Architects.
To create the interior décor of Vida, the Owner appointed Be Design Associates from Florida with whom he had previously worked on several residential projects. The Be Design team worked on an interior architectural structure penned by Francesco Paszkowski and Margerita Casprini. Twelve guests are accommodated in five suites located on the lower deck and a magnificent 80-square-meter owner’s stateroom set forward on the main deck. Further, a stunning backlit onyx arch in the main saloon will guarantee a wow effect when boarding Vida. At 55m and 740GT, Vida offers a maximum speed of 16 knots and frugal fuel consumption that gives a remarkable range of 4,500nm at 13 knots, thanks to the progressive hull design devised by van Oossanen Naval Architects. Combining magnificent comfort with optimised efficiency throughout the speed spectrum, Heesen’s 55m FDHF steel class sets a new standard in superyacht performance.

'Vida' embarks on maiden journey
The 55m steel motor yacht left dutch waters for her maiden voyage to the mediterranean….
Formerly known as Project Antares , the 55m steel motor yacht left Dutch waters for her maiden voyage to the Mediterranean where she will be met by her new owners.
She underwent her sea trials in March during which she managed to reach a top speed of 16.4 knots. Vida is also the first yacht in Heesen’s fleet to comply with the latest emissions regulations, featuring a selective catalytic reduction system that reduces NOx in exhaust emissions.
The owner, an experienced American yachtsman and sport fisherman, worked closely with the shipyard’s engineers to customise his new yacht, giving it the capacity to refuel and recharge his Bayliss 60 and Bayliss 68 sportfish yachts, allowing him to be at sea autonomously for several days. This bespoke addition to Vida is an adroit illustration of how superyachts can be used to explore owners’ passions, beyond yachting itself, increasingly this is becoming an important string to the superyacht market’s bow.
On the lower deck are five staterooms that can accommodate up to 12 guests, while the owner has an 80m2 apartment forward on the main deck.
Vida’s outside areas have been designed to offer her guest’s plenty of entertainment space. Her 100m2 sundeck, for example, offers a place to lounge during the day, which, according to Heesen is “ invitingly enhanced by the pool that features a mesmerising waterfall”. During the evening the starred ceiling and pool’s LED lights allows the sundeck to become a party area.
Vida is set to debut at the Monaco Yacht Show in September this year.
According to the fleet analysis from The Superyacht New Build Report , published earlier this year, Heesen is one the industry’s “consistent builders,” meaning that they have delivered at least one superyacht per annum for the last ten years. Over the past decade, they have delivered 40 superyachts in total.
Heesen is set to have a busy few years, having delivered two superyachts this year already, with two more in the pipeline for 2019. They have four in build for 2020 and three due for 2021.

VIDA Yacht – Precious Superyacht
It was built by Heesen Yacht Builders in 2019 with naval architecture by Omega Architects. She acts as a mothership to the owner’s sports fishing fleet.
The interior design was a collaborative effort from three major design houses; Francesco Paszkowski, Margherita Casprini, and BE Design Associates.
VIDA is a luxury home on the water for the owner and his family to enjoy during fishing tournaments and expeditions.

Francesco Paszkowski worked on the interior design for the VIDA yacht in collaboration with Margherita Casprini. BE Design Associates also contributed to the VIDA’s interior at a later date.
There is accommodation for 12 guests in 6 cabins, in one master suite, two VIP suites, one double, and two twins. The VIDA has a capacity of 13 crew members on board for a luxury experience for guests.
The VIDA yacht features a contemporary yet sophisticated style with the best quality materials like travertine, Calacatta marbles, and Alpilignum teak. The colors of the decor are earthy and bring a sense of livable luxury.
This was important to the owner, as he wanted a floating home for him and his family to enjoy while on fishing expeditions.
Indoor/outdoor seating is abundant throughout the 55m yacht, which offers plenty of space for guests to enjoy fine dining and socialize together.
She also features a large beach club that makes sunbathing and lounging by the water easy for guests.
The beach club also features a gym. She has a pool with LED lights that match the ambiance created by lights on the hardtop roof of the VIDA.
VIDA yacht exterior
The exterior of the VIDA yacht was designed by Omega Architects , boasting a sharp and masculine exterior that makes her stand out on the water.
Heesen Yachts built her in their Netherlands-based shipyard and delivered her to the owner in 2019.
Her imposing exterior features a white steel hull and aluminum superstructure. VIDA was designed to be a fishing boat that wasn’t cramped so that everyone on board could enjoy fishing expeditions and tournaments.
VIDA yacht specifications
The VIDA yacht is a 55m superyacht with a 9.6m beam and a 3.15m draft. The yacht has a displacement of 740 gross tons and is powered by twin MTU engines.
With a range of 4500 nautical miles, she has a cruising speed of 13 knots and a maximum speed of 16 knots.
She has a Lloyd’s Register classification. VIDA acts as a mothership to a fleet of fishing boats. She had to be large enough to serve as a filling station for the other sportfishing boats in the owner’s fleet to accommodate this feature.
