Charter : New base in Greece

Andreas Fritsch

 ·  06.10.2014

Charter: New base in Greece

The Austrian charter company Marina & Yachting Development has taken over parts of the Ecker fleet previously based there for the new base, but is supplementing it with a whole range of new yachts. The staff from the old base have also returned. A fleet of three Beneteaus (43 to 50 feet) and three Lagoon cats (38 to 43 feet) are available on site.

Achilleion is a great starting harbour for cruises to the Sporades islands of Skiathos, Skopleos or Alonnisos. They offer a very varied and attractive sailing area that is not yet overcrowded. The distances between the islets are short, and the Meltemi winds are somewhat weaker here in the high season than further south in the Cyclades.

  The base in Achilleion

With the opening of the new base, crews can once again take off from the mainland, which has the advantage of good flight connections to Volos. Air Berlin flies to the small airport and offers attractive feeder flights from many German airports. As the Sunsail base on the Gulf of Volos in Milina was closed in 2014, the new base should be the ideal starting point on the mainland. The transfer from the airport takes just under 40 minutes, significantly less than the two hours and more to Milina.

The base also offers yacht services, which should be of interest to owners travelling in the region.

Bookings can be made via Alexandra Hofinger Yachtcharter, whose owner was also involved with Ecker Yachting for many years and has now successfully launched her own company. Here to go to the agency's website.

Challenge & Context

Today more than 85% of the  marinas and tourist ports  around the globe are characterized by a low level of technology and a poor or limited range/quality of digital services to their customers. According to the  ICOMIA  statistics book,  6 million boats  (length > 8m.) are kept in European waters (more than 25 million boats globally), while  4.500 marinas  manage 1.75 million berths both inland and in coastal areas in Europe (more than 25.000 marinas, 440.000 open mooring areas and more than 10 million berths globally).

Although the sector is growing and newly built marinas emerge,  several challenges  continue to persist, including:

  • absence of integrated management systems;
  • lack of real-time monitoring and communication mechanisms;
  • offline and unsecure transactions;
  • absence guidance and notification tools ;
  • overbooked or inappropriate mooring;
  • lack of business intelligence and data-driven decision making;
  • pollution and environmental impact;
  • remote operations.

At the same time, the  Millennials  and  Gen Z  are an increasing population within the boating community with higher demands and expectations for digital services, a fact that is acting as a catalyst for the acceleration of the adoption of new technological services and tools in the yachting and marinas market.

The worldwide  COVID-19 pandemic  revealed another hidden need for offering remote management and contactless services to the boaters at the time they check-in, stay or check-out in a marina or a tourist port.

In order to respond to the aforementioned challenges, it is critical to offer an integrated technical solutionfor assisting the marinas or tourist ports to  manage their amenities and their human capital in an optimal way , to  attract more yachts and optimize the revenue streams , to  advance their daily management, to create sustainable jobs and to protect the environment and the underwater habitat.

The main innovation target is to provide solutions with  extended use of smart connected devices  and  enhance their operation through newly designed systems , this way, creating new business opportunities (e.g. provision of advanced trip scheduling services, production of marina-related data sets, aggregation of data from different systems and data resources) in the growing yachting industry market.

SaMMY , a successful company based in Greece, has been designing systems to fulfil yachting and marina needs and combining different technologies, devices, algorithms and communication protocols towards this scope.

In 2015, SaMMY launched a cloud-based platform ( www.sammyacht.com ) that connects the world of yachters and sea travelers with the marinas’ and tourist ports’ ecosystem that simplifies the marinas’ operational processes and offer mobile assistance to the yachters and crew members.

Based on cutting-edge technologies, SaMMY has been developed together with advanced services that include new wave technologies like Big Data Analytics, IoT, Artificial Intelligence and specific FIWARE components. The result is a fully sensing and automation infrastructure for marinas and tourist ports is  the technological breakthrough and business disruption  that SaMMY offers to the market. It provides a wide set of functionalities to monitor and guide the yachts to the marinas and at the same time controls the conditions inside a marine environment.

marina & yachting development gmbh

When arriving at the marina, the SAMMY services are used to guide the captain to the booked space, using GPS-enabled technologies and ultrasonic sensors to assist him/her to avoid unnecessary maneuvers and cause traffic congestion or collisions. In addition, SaMMY equips the marina admins with a monitoring mechanism for important activities of the yachts (e.g. arriving/departing from marina, littering or waste dumping, motor noise). When yachts are anchored, the SaMMY platform can collect data from meteorological sensors, water quality and sea-level measurement sensors with which they can monitor in real-time the conditions within the marina environment. The conditions inside the marina, along with the berth spaces status are visualized in a map providing useful information for the efficient management of the marinas’ resources and facilities.

SaMMY has been well known for it past and ongoing innovation projects and experiments that aim at the validation of different technologies shaping the marinas and tourist ports of the future:

  • RIS3 — SaMMY+ : Intelligent Vision Systems and Machine Learning algorithms are used for optimized boat tracking and object recognition in marine environments;
  • H2020 SMARTEES-Fetching : Novel lighting, OLED screens and flexible photovoltaics are used for the digital signage of the marinas and tourist ports, for changing the picture of the docking spots during the day or night and for delivering fully-automated floating moorings;
  • EASME EMFF- Blue Roses : Robotics and remote-controlled vehicles are used for sea-bed mapping, detection of anchoring problems and hull incidents or littering alerts;
  • H2020 — VICINITY:  Data Sharing with 3rd party cross domain applications or other members of the Vicinity ecosystem;
  • H2020 — SymbIoTe:  L1 compliance with the SymbIoTe IoT collaborative platform. Interoperability and data sharing of IoT data with SymbIOTe ecosystem.

The origins of SaMMY’s solutions date back to a financing programme launched by the European Commission together with FIWARE Accelerator Programme frontierCities and “ frontierCities2 ”. That time, SaMMY targeted to become the ultimate fellow traveler yachters, skipper and marina administrators and support with its solutions services like e-booking, navigational and parking assistance and mobile guidance to the nearby coastal areas.

Throughout the years, SaMMY have accomplished various achievements in global events and competitions:

  • The FIWARE Accelerate programme has distinguished SaMMY as a  High Potential Impact (HPI) project  among more than  1,000  FIWARE solutions from inside and outside Europe;
  • Libelium , a leading IoT company, selected SaMMY and its IoT extensions as a  Case Study for Smart Marinas;
  • Startup Grind (supported by Google) selected SaMMY as one of the 70 companies (out of 1600 applicants) at  Startup Grind Europe 2017 , London (UK);
  • Union for Mediterranean Intergovernmental Institution hosted SaMMY at its annual  Blue Economy Conference 2017  to present the ‘Next Generation Marinas concept’
  • Accenture nominated SAMMY as one of the Global Innovators at  Blue Tulips Awards competition 2018;
  • ICOMIA (World Marinas Association) invited SaMMY to analyze the topic “Intelligent Systems for the Next Generation Marinas” at the  World Marinas Conference 2018;
  • European Commission Selected SAMMYas one of the  TOP 20 EU innovators in the Annual Blue Invest 2020  event .

How it works

SaMMY combines different technologies and tools into one integrated system, especially designed for the adverse conditions of the maritime environment and addressing the efficiency of marinas and yachters.

It is an application for mobile devices (smartphones, tablets, integrated yachting devices etc.) to serve yachters, skippers and crew members providing a simple environment for on-line berth booking and payment, navigational and mooring assistance services and instant communication with the preferred marinas. SaMMY App offers a variety of high-level services:

  • Real-time information about the weather and sea conditions;
  • Notifications of extreme weather events or maritime incidents;
  • Full guidance to the nearby marina areas and points of interest.

marina & yachting development gmbh

Connecting Marina Management System (MMS) to SaMMY App.

The marina administrators can easily use SaMMY for the daily management of bookings, for handling weather alerts and for providing  guidance and  personalized notifications to the yachters  through an  interactive map -based interface . SaMMY also provides information about marina regulations and the pricing and cancelling policies. In turn, it  connects the yachters with the local economies .  The MMS infrastructure is  hosted on the “Cloud” and there is no extra need for investments in hardware or software for the marinas.

marina & yachting development gmbh

SaMMY’s advanced technologies transform a regular Marina into a ‘Smart’ one.

A multi-purpose sensor grid consisting of waterproof wireless sensors is enrolled in order to feed a central system and provide booking, meteorological and environmental information. These services are facilitated through the installation of different types of sensors (ultrasound, meteorological, water quality, wave measurement etc.) which collect data and monitor the conditions within the marina in real-time.

marina & yachting development gmbh

Within the Cloud Storage infrastructure, a  FIWARE Context Broker (Orion)  is configured so as to manage Context Information for the mobile (Yachter’s Mobile App) and the Marina Management System (Web App) services. The overall development is based on open web, mobile app technologies and scripting languages. The mobile app interacts with the Context Broker through AJAX requests in order to publish the IoT sensor datasets. Additionally, a  Complex Event FIWARE GE  is also configured for handling specific complex events (e.g. berth space availability).

The Marina Management System consists of the  Wire-Cloud GE widgets  (Widget Dashboard) and two external web application modules (Berth Space Management Module and POI Management Module). These modules provide the working space for the marina officers and the system administrators, integrating the data, applying business logic and creating the necessary UI components.

Marina developments: six trends, six headliners

Although we are still operating in uncertain times, new projects are being discussed, marina redevelopments being planned and approved, and marina managers shaping up facilities. We are living in unprecedented times but could well be on the brink of an unprecedented interest in boating, with a great demand for berths and with marinas as an increasingly valued property asset class.

What are marina owners, managers and marina developers focusing on for 2021 and beyond? Carol Fulford, editor of Marina World, offers up six thoughts and some interesting new marina projects and major redevelopments in each region.

Trends in the marina industry

  • Think destination: more emphasis than ever is being placed on the marina in its local context, with the marina as the ‘anchor’ of a regional destination experience. Marinas continue to be the focal point of new waterfront resorts and communities.
  • Think sharing economy: focus is sharpening on the berths required for boat share and charter at all levels. The Boat Club concept is rolling out beyond the USA, and big boat charter – including superyacht – is attracting more interest for wealthier customers.
  • Think value added : it’s a good time to shape up a marina if you’d like to sell. Marina groups and networks are expanding like never before, creating large portfolios. Marinas are increasingly being seen as sound investments and have secured an individual niche in the property retail sector.
  • Think environment: water quality, coastline protection schemes, alternative energy, efficient pump-out, e-charging, recycled water systems, water clean-up devices, flora and fauna regeneration projects, landscaping with indigenous planting, and more.
  • Think big: there is continued focus on creating more superyacht berths, better captain and crew facilities and repair/maintenance yards especially in Australia, the Mediterranean and the USA.
  • Think smart: Smart technology is being embraced in forward-thinking marina management systems. Better connectivity is being offered to boaters via reservation sites and apps that facilitate management tasks and give the customer better access to marina services. Automated drystack systems incorporate smart technology to maximise return for operators and minimise waiting time for boaters.

New marinas and major redevelopments

Every year brings a flurry of new marinas and major redevelopments. Here’s one headliner for each of six regions.

NORTH AMERICA: Dana Point

The California Coastal Commission (CCC) granted a permit in May 2021 for the long-awaited US$330 million redevelopment of Dana Point Harbor in Dana Point, California, USA. The revitalisation plan is the result of more than 20 years of community collaboration.

Joe Ueberroth, founder and president of Bellwether Financial Group - developer of the new Dana Point Harbor - and chairman and CEO of the marina builder Bellingham Marine and marina operator Bellport, described the revitalisation as a “once in a lifetime opportunity.”

“Our plan includes protection of marine life, commitment to water quality and expanding public access. The dock system innovation by Bellingham Marine will eliminate all treated wood and includes technology that removes all ferrous metals, ensuring longer dock life, while ridding the environment of those toxic materials,” he said.

Plans for the marina include positioning the parking and retail space on the waterfront, giving the public access to the docks and implementing an educational, sailing and water sport programme for underserved youth in Orange County.

Construction is due to start at the end of this year and should complete in 2026.

EUROPE: Luštica Bay

Luštica Bay, one of the most scenic locations in Montenegro, is being transformed by Orascom Development with two new marinas.

The goal of the project, to create a luxury town that reflects and enhances the surrounding natural beauty and local culture, follows the lead of architect François Spoerry in France with the perfectly integrated Port Grimaud in the Gulf of Saint Tropez.

The first marina and the marina village opened in 2018, along with five-star hotel Chedi Luštica Bay, which swiftly launched the project as a top level destination.

“The main marina currently has an 85 berth capacity. Of the two planned, this will have 176 berths and the other – in a secondary mooring area – will have 56,” confirmed Orascom Marine Management director Philip Jones. A fuelling station, dry docking and port entry have been scheduled for this year.

The marina is protected by a durable breakwater made of solid rock and 6.5m (21ft) high antifers. The antifer cubes have a rock and rubble core. All floating elements have been designed and built by Italian company Ingemar in a modular layout that can be swiftly reconfigured according to season and special requirements. Pontoons are manufactured in concrete and galvanised steel with environmentally friendly decking.

SOUTH AMERICA: Porto Belo

When the municipality of Porto Belo in Santa Catarina on the south coast of Brazil issued a tender for a public marina in 2014 it was seeking a modern nautical facility to complement its excellent sailing waters.

Brazilian company, Squalo Marinas, a specialist with 35 years of marina and waterfront project development in the Americas, won the tender to develop a project for a 500-slip marina for boats up to 180ft (55m). The brief was to integrate the vision with the local landscape and make best use of site.

Safety, comfort, service, and environmental and social sustainability, were high priorities and main goals for the project explained Squalo principal Ronaldo Souza CMM, a port and civil engineer who is also principal of Westrec Marinas Latin America.

Porto Belo Public Marina will have a floating dock infrastructure with finger piers. A 16ft (5m) wide concrete floating wave attenuator will be positioned as the farthest dock, covering and protecting the marina from wake action generated by its 500 boats. Docks will be of umbrella and fishbone shape to provide additional protection and aesthetic appeal.

SOUTH EAST ASIA: Lantau Yacht Club

Following an announcement made in August 2019, Hong Kong Resort Company has now completely redeveloped Discovery Bay Marina Club and re-branded it as Lantau Yacht Club (LYC). It is the first ‘new’ marina to open in Hong Kong in a decade.

Featuring 148 wet berths ranging from 10 to 60m in length, the marina is custom-built and typhoon-proof with a well-built breakwater that has proven itself over several decades.

UK-based marina consultant Marina Projects was appointed to advise on the master plan design, berth mix and technical provisions of the marina, and the structural design of the concrete pontoon system was provided by Atkins.

“The marina at Lantau Yacht Club is designed to meet the needs of the growing yachting community and the increasing number of superyachts - a first in Hong Kong,” explained Victor Cha, deputy chairman and managing director of HKR International – a shareholder of the developer and operator. Our world-class marina aims to offer the ideal berthing space for local yacht owners and will attract luxury and superyachts from around the world…making our city a preferred yachting destination in the region,” he added. LYC marina has berths up to 100m (328ft), which is unprecedented in Hong Kong.

AUSTRALASIA: Moreton Bay

By 2030, the North Harbour Marina Precinct in Moreton Bay near Brisbane will be transformed into a world-class waterfront destination, boasting a 400-berth marina in Australia’s fast-growing region of south-east Queensland.

Moreton Bay is a diverse paradise protected by soaring sand dunes, renowned wetlands and waters teeming with life. It is also a stunning backdrop for the experienced Australian developer Port Binnli Group to build a waterfront precinct with 500 dry storage docks, around 562 private pontoons, fuel facilities, yacht and jet ski hire, fishing and diving charters, and much more to complement its core marina.

The larger precinct will transform 570ha (1,410 acres) of prime waterfront land into a retail and entertainment village, a 319ha (788-acre) open space recreation area and a residential community.

North Harbour Marina was first envisioned almost 20 years ago and has been one of south-east Queensland’s most rigorously planned and assessed projects. Plans received official approval in 2009.

Some parts of North Harbour have been delivered since 2009 and it is already home to more than 640 households. The marina will be built in stages, allowing opportunities for the community to begin enjoying the many recreational facilities within the coming years.

MIDDLE EAST: Al Qana

Al Qana – the latest in a long line of impressive waterfront developments in the United Arab Emirates – is located in the heart of Abu Dhabi. The boulevard-style facility extends across 2.4km (1.5mi) of waterfront that is connected by four eye-catching bridges. World-class dining, entertainment, retail and adventure are offered in an all-year-round warm climate.

The 107-berth marina, developed by Al Barakah International Investment and completed early in 2021, aims to appeal to both local residents and visitors. Those without vessels will have the option of chartering boats to experience the yachting lifestyle and, with its Riviera-style berthing arrangements and services, the marina is set to attract luxury yacht owners.

The lifestyle development will boast a large-scale supermarket, restaurants and cafés, convenience stores and a variety of essential retail shops for the neighbouring community, along with cinemas, theatres, activity centres, indoor theme parks, a virtual reality gaming centre, an aquarium and more.

“With destinations ever evolving over the past decade, people are now seeking places that offer adventure and rejuvenation – mainly open air spaces with lavish landscapes and water features. For this reason, Al Qana aims to transform Abu Dhabi into the most liveable city in the world, to meet the needs of new lifestyle trends,” said waterway and marina manager Andy Savill.

Startups, marinas & architects look to the future development of smart infrastructures to help build a sustainable yachting sector

2 nd monaco smart & sustainable marina rendezvous.

Key to the economy and the planet’s lungs, oceans cover around 72% of the earth’s surface, that’s 363 million square kilometres. Data underline the urgent need to protect it and strive for the sustainability of infrastructures such as marinas. Protecting coastal areas is therefore essential, notably for the economy as it generates nearly 50% of global tourism.

These are facts that have become areas to work on in the Principality of Monaco under the leadership of its Sovereign HSH Prince Albert II , through the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and Yacht Club de Monaco for the yachting sector, with a battery of actions being carried out under the collective Monaco, Capital of Advanced Yachting umbrella brand. “If Monaco wants to position itself at the forefront of yachting, the Principality must support its transition. The climate emergency that we are witnessing more and more each day concerns the whole yachting ecosystem which has to evolve, both the yachts as well as port infrastructure and facilities. We must be agents of change and contribute to this transformation. The purpose is to present innovative solutions and encourage their application towards development of virtuous marinas,” said HSH Prince Albert II.

Ensuring the durability and viability of marinas in the long-term is essential to the yachting industry’s prosperity. The ultimate goal is two-fold: mitigate the environmental impact of these infrastructures and establish them as benchmark destinations.

To this end, on 25-26 September 2022 Yacht Club de Monaco hosts the 2nd Monaco Smart & Sustainable Marina , organised by M3 (Monaco Marina Management), the Monaco-based consulting company specialised in the development, management and promotion of marinas & yacht clubs, with support from the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation , the Government’s digital transition programme, Extended Monaco , Credit Suisse, Al-Rushaid Group, Bombardier, MB92 and Xerjoff.

2022 edition extended to marinas and architects to further boost interactions with startups

For this edition, virtuous marina specialists M3 (Monaco Marina Management) again called on Blumorpho , ‘Open Innovation’ ecosystem for positive impact experts with its international network focused on new concepts and business models. The International Smart & Sustainable Marina Awards , which last year were for startups only, have been extended to marinas and architects to promote innovation and green technologies by encouraging discussion in the design and management of these living spaces.

This networking event stands out for bringing an ecosystem of 250 people representing key players in the sector (entrepreneurs and startups to meet industrialists, investors, promoters, marina developers, architects and all those involved in yachting). This is Smart technology at the service of safeguarding the environment by better management of usages and resources. A deluge of innovations is set to transform future marinas.

“We’ve been working on the virtuous marina concept for several years now. It is our deep conviction that has enabled us to develop expertise in this field, particularly regarding water management. Smart Marinas are living spaces that respect the environment and actively encourage the emergence of new activities and services just like Smart Cities do from which they take inspiration,” says José Marco Casellini , CEO of M3.

Yachting community on board

In response to climate issues and to encourage responsible innovation towards the design and management of virtuous marinas, all those involved in the luxury yacht industry are behind it like Jean-Marc Bolinger , CEO of MB92 Group, with shipyards based in La Ciotat and Barcelona. “We are proud to sponsor the Monaco Smart & Sustainable Marina Rendezvous event to support innovative solutions and progress at pace towards a sustainable future in line with our duty and commitment”.

Paris Baloumis , Marketing Director of Dutch shipyard Oceanco which specialises in design and build of large custom superyachts, echoes this view: “For the yachting industry, we want to move away from our dependence on fossil fuels. If we’re genuinely serious about sustainability, we have to look at the whole process including the marinas so they accommodate visiting yachts in a sustainable environment”.

Bernard d’Alessandri , President of Cluster Yachting Monaco and General Secretary of Yacht Club de Monaco, explains: “Monaco has always been a yachting hub. The Monaco Smart & Sustainable Marina Rendezvous is part of the Monaco, Capital of Advanced Yachting approach. We have a responsibility to encourage all initiatives that take us towards more eco-responsible yachting for our planet, for the oceans and for future generations. A marina is a key link in the yachting chain, a living space to accommodate yachts, their owners and crews; a future-oriented micro-city where there are strong interactions between the land and marine environments”.

E-Catalogue promotes innovative solutions

Keen to bring to the fore new still little known solutions, the organisers have published an online catalogue available to consult on the event’s official website (https://sustainablesmartmarina.com/e-catalogue). The E-Catalogue references 50 startups and around 15 marinas and architects from 25 countries , selected by the experts at Blumorpho and M3.

“The Monaco Smart & Sustainable Marina Rendezvous’ goal is to put innovation at the service of developing low carbon impact virtuous marinas that will generate new values in economic terms. These marinas will be models for future town developments. The pioneering aspect of this initiative explains the enthusiasm of innovators active across a range of fields from water, energy and waste management to mobility, security, construction, port equipment or infrastructure not forgetting protection and regeneration of biodiversity,” explains Géraldine A. Gustin , CEO of Blumorpho.

For project managers, the listing of new advances in the E-Catalogue is a godsend as Ra’anan Ben-Zur , promotor of Habacoa Yacht Club in South Abaco (Bahamas) says: “ Thanks to this E-Catalogue, our team is eager to find out more about the innovations proposed by these startups which aim to maximise green energy. The solutions they are working on encourage marina developers like us to design projects more respectful of the environment”.

Words confirmed by French architecture firm, the world-renowned Ateliers Jean Nouvel , entrusted by a Chinese owner to imagine and design a yachting destination in the Zhoushan islands near Shanghai: “Marinas, as lively living spaces, are an integral part of our overall architectural design. They are an open door to explore the world and encourage adventure. Monegasque yachting and the Yacht Club de Monaco’s success is a source of inspiration. We have been exchanging with this prestigious Club for many years now”.

An original selection process

Startups, marinas and architects referenced in the E-Catalogue to present their projects to reduce their impact on the environment are also in the running for the International Smart & Sustainable Marina Awards . The awards are in three categories and will be announced at the end of the event on Monday 26th September.

The original networking selection process to short-list names for the International Smart & Sustainable Marina Awards comprises different stages, the first being launch of the E-Catalogue followed by the:

  • Grand Oral : one to one interviews during the summer with an international Jury of industrialists, yachting professionals and investors.
  • Consensus Meeting : all members of the Jury then determine the Startups winner of the International Smart & Sustainable Marina Awards , presented on Monday 26th September 2022 as well as the Top 3 in the Marinas & Architects categories. This final stage takes place on 12th September for startups and 13th September for marinas and architects. Note the public vote will also count for these two categories.

A networking rendezvous attended by the whole ecosystem

Two days of meetings are on the agenda for this year, including two conferences on Monday 26th September entitled ‘Commercial value of positive impact and sustainability’ and ‘Financing the Blue Economy’.

Among new elements are workshops on the following topics: water optimisation energy optimisation, protection and regeneration of biodiversity, new building materials and eco-design, port management, security and finance. Another opportunity is the chance for marinas, architects and startups to present their projects in the exhibition area on Sunday 25th September (from 3.00pm) and Monday 26th September .

Faced with the climate emergency, the Principality of Monaco under the leadership of its Sovereign is consolidating its role as a catalyst for innovations to build a responsible yachting sector that meets the challenges facing the planet. A duty that has now become an obligation.

Fabulous Marina For Superyachts Surrounded By A Luxurious Community Set To Be Built In Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia is back to blowing our minds with another mind-boggling and ambitious project. Announced by Neom, the latest creation is a brand new marina for superyachts, a massive space with a sophisticated and luxurious community placed around it. Named Jaumur, this project will be focusing on the marina, enabling billionaires to park their expensive superyachts underneath an impressive “aerofoil” shelter. The shelter resembles an arrow pointed towards the desert from above, offering protection from the sun throughout the year. The Jaumur marina will be able to hold 300 superyachts measuring 492 feet in length. A few yachts may not be able to fit, but most of the big ones should be able to.

Designer: Liam Roberts and Terry Mcquillan

“The aerofoil incorporates a gravity-defying cantilever to form a stunning entrance to the marina, welcoming the world’s largest superyachts,” stated Neom’s press release. “The sculptural structure is a landmark that serves as the perfect base for all the marina attractions, for committed yachting enthusiasts and adventurers seeking personalized experiences. The marina promenade will be a place alive with entertainment, leisure, and cultural experiences, hosting year-round arts events and performance programs, complemented by signature retail stores and world-class dining options.”

Although the main attraction is the marina, Jaumur will also serve as a home for around 6000 residents. It will accommodate around 500 apartments, and 700 luxury villas amped with waterfront access, and a private mooring for small boats and yachts. The space will be interspersed with green in multiple spots, providing a natural respite from the concrete architecture. An international boarding school for the children of the rich and fabulous will also be included, as well as two luxury hotels with 350 rooms and suites. A deep-sea research center facilitating expeditions to conduct studies on the coastline will also be integrated into the project.

Jaumur will be constructed in Saudi’s Gulf of Aqaba region, where most of Neom’s development is situated. The fabulous marina will be designed by the architects Liam Roberts and Terry Mcquillan.

Yacht Club de Monaco: 4th Monaco Smart & Sustainable Marina Rendezvous: Monaco fosters synergies

TURIN, Italy, Sept. 13, 2024. The E-catalogue features a selection of startups and scaleups, a dozen architecture firms, nearly 30 students working in the sector, as well as a dozen marinas.

Delegates can discover and test the latest innovations from startups and scaleups in the exhibition area and attend round tables at three conferences, which will explore how technology, the banking sector and architecture can transform marinas. The two networking days are open to all professionals. This year, a call for proposals invites architects and students to design an innovative floating marina for ecologically sensitive areas. The jury is chaired by Zaha Hadid Architects, with the valuable and consistent participation of architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte and yacht designer Dan Lenard. The implementation of a floating marina project embodies a strategic response to contemporary environmental and infrastructural challenges while leveraging innovation for sustainable coastal development. At the end of two intense days of exchanges and networking, the International Smart & Sustainable Marina Awards will be presented on Monday 23rd September at 4.00pm to winners in three categories: Startups & Scaleups, Marinas and Architects (Professional & Student).

Following on from the Monaco Smart Yacht Rendezvous earlier this year and convinced of the need for a 360° sustainable approach, the organizers continue to develop the Monaco Smart & Sustainable Marina Rendezvous. "As in the automobile industry, where infrastructure has to adapt to new generation vehicles, yachting must integrate technological innovations to meet the needs of tomorrow's yachts," stresses Bernard d'Alessandri, President of Cluster Yachting Monaco and YCM's General Secretary. "Without suitable infrastructure and facilities, it will be difficult for us to move the sector forward together. It is essential to mobilize all stakeholders, from yacht designers to marina managers, to ensure a transition to smarter, more sustainable yachting". As part of the collective approach of 'Monaco, Capital of Advanced Yachting' this meeting is supported by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and the Principality's Digital Transition Programme, Extended Monaco implemented by the Monaco Government, along with UBS, MB92 Group and Bombardier.
