Pacquiao wins three-year legal battle against Paradigm

manny pacquiao japan

MANNY Pacquiao just scored a victory not on the ring, but on the court.

The three-year legal battle of the only eight-time world division champion against Paradigm Sports Management (PSM) finally came to a final decision in favor of the Filipino boxing legend.

Superior Court of the State of California County of Orange Central Justice Center Judge Walter Schwarm issued his final statement of decision last August 12, 2024, declaring the contract void owing to illegality.

According to the final statement signed by judge Schwarm, “The court finds for Mr. Pacquiao on the declaratory relief cause of action and declares the contract void due to illegality.”

PSM is headed by CEO Audie Attar.

The decision was a huge victory for the Pacquiao camp as it meant the ring great could fight again on US soil should he decide to unretire and seek a potential fight against reigning WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios later this year or early in 2025.

Manny Pacquiao’s US lawyer Atty. Jason Aniel said the former senator was glad to hear the court’s final decision and thanked everyone who prayed for the resolution of the legal issue.

“We are pleased that the court made its final decision on the legal issues in Mr. Pacquiao’s favor,” Aniel said. “After hearing Paradigm Sports Management’s objections to the tentative decision, the court decided the contract that Paradigm sought to enforce Mr Pacquiao was illegal as Paradigm was not properly licensed.

Aniel added: “This decision negates the jury’s findings back in May of 2023. We thank the court’s time and effort in this matter. Mr. Pacquiao thanks his fans for their patience while the court fully resolved all the legal issues.”

Manny Pacquiao’s MP Promotions president Sean Gibbons confirmed the latest documents from Orange County, saying the former senator did nothing wrong and that the Paradigm Sports Management contract was illegal.

“Manny Pacquiao was finally proven innocent. He did nothing wrong as the Superior Court of California has already announced its final statement of decision declaring that the contract offered by Paradigm was void due to illegality,” Gibbons said, referring to the judge’s final decision.

“God bless Manny Pacquiao,” Gibbons added.

The Filipino boxing legend was completely vindicated after winning the final battle on court despite the US jury’s May 2023 ruling ordering him to pay $5.1 million to Paradigm broken as follows -$3.3 million for breach of contract and $1.8 million for breach of implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing.

But Pacquiao’s legal camp waited for the whole process to be completed, before the same judge found out that Paradigm was not licensed as a manager under the California law and nullified the jury’s earlier verdict and not reverse it as earlier reported.

Celebrities and their multi-million peso yachts

manny pacquiao 500 million yacht

When luxury cars and motorcycles aren't enough, a few celebrities buy themselves a luxury yacht.

Some use it for island hopping; others use it as the venue of their parties.

Here are celebrity-owned yachts that made headlines.

SARANGANI'S PRIDE

Boxing champion/politician Manny Pacquiao bought it for PHP25 million as a Christmas gift to his family in 2011.

On the heels of his fight with Juan Manuel Marquez, Manny told ABS-CBN News in an interview, "Regalo ko sa pamilya ko at sa mga kids ko, wife ko after ng fight."

For her part, Jinkee said, "Andaming blessing na dumating 'tsaka yung yate, iniisip lang namin dati na kelan kaya kami magkakaroon ng ganyan? 'Tapos ngayon, eto na."

According to the report, the vessel was considered the "Ferrari" of yachts. It could also carry three jet skis.

In May 2017, Jinkee gave a sneak peek of what's inside their yacht during a summer bonding session with her family.

WOW CRUISER

Wowowin host Willie Revillame owns two private yachts, which are docked at the Subic Yacht Club.

The first one is the M/V Wow Cruiser I, a 94-footer yacht which he bought in 2008 during the heyday of his now-defunct Kapamilya noontime show Wowowee .

According to GMA News, Willie's yacht then cost around PHP80 million .

The second one, smaller in size, is called M/V Wow Cruiser II.

Talent manager Annabelle Rama celebrated her 56th birthday in these vessels in 2008.

Willie usually boards his yachts each time he's taking a short break on Boracay Island.

One of Gretchen Barretto's favorite settings for her Instagram photos are their yachts.

She and her long-time partner, business tycoon Tonyboy Cojuangco, own two yachts.

One was named after their daughter Dominique.

The 47-year-old actress fondly calls it "The Bapor," which means boat.

An Instagram follower with the handle name @ mckaysalesa commented, "Yacht over yacht...yours must be the mega yacht @gretchenbarretto?"

Gretchen replied, "@mckaysales both belong to us"

THE ESCALERA AND M/Y HAPPY LIFE

Chavit Singson, former governor of Ilocos Sur and present chairman of the LCS Group of Companies, also owns two luxury yachts.

One is called The Escalera, which came with a massive US$4 million (around PHP180 million) price tag at the time it was purchased.

It was also used by Annabelle as one of venues for her 56th birthday in October 2008.

In 2017, Chavit's new luxury yacht called M/Y Happy Life got featured on Kapuso Mo Jessica Soho .

At the time, it had a staggering price tag of US$12 million or around PHP600 million.

Currently docked at the Manila Yacht Club, it ferried some of the Miss Universe 2016 candidates between Manila and Batangas province during one of the pre-pageant events.

M/Y Happy Life has five floors, 16 bedrooms, and six jacuzzis.

Businessman Joel Cruz used Chavit's yacht after the Miss Universe event for his birthday party.

Every Boxing Record Manny Pacquiao Has Broken Ahead Of Potential Comeback

Every Boxing Record Manny Pacquiao Has Broken Ahead Of Potential Comeback

Manny Pacquiao knows records.

The internationally popular Filipino, born into poverty 45 years ago, has been throwing hands for an astonishing 28 years.

During his long career…

  • Pacquiao has captured titles in a record eight weight divisions (out of 17).
  • He’s the only fighter in history to capture the lineal championship in five divisions.
  • Pacquiao has held championships for an astonishing four decades.
  • He became the oldest welterweight champion in the division’s history with a win over Keith Thurman in 2019 at 40-years-old.
  • He is the first professional boxer to secure titles in four of the original eight weight divisions, namely flyweight, featherweight, lightweight, and welterweight.
  • He is one half of the best-selling pay-per-view in the sport’s history, his fight against Floyd Mayweather doing a reported 4.6 million buys.

His championship run started back in 1998. Pacquiao, then 19, won the WBC flyweight title with a victory over Chatchai Sasakul in Thailand.

Outboxed for seven rounds, Pacquiao cornered Sasakul in round eight and uncorked a wicked left that knocked the champion out. Pacquiao lost his title but moved up to super bantamweight, where he was victorious in his next nine fights.

Pacquiao made his American fighting debut when challenged favored IBF super bantamweight champion Lehlo Ledwaba in 2001 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, NV. Pacquiao was a late replacement for injured Enrique Sanchez. Time was of the essence. His camp was a short one. Two weeks.

Ledwaba, the winner of 33 of 34 fights, was expected to defeat the little-known Pacquaio. Didn’t happen. Pacquiao stopped Ledwaba in six rounds.

Two years later, he met Marco Antonio Barrera in Texas. The Ring featherweight title belt was at stake. Barrera was on an eight-fight winning streak after a controversial loss to Erik Morales. He avenged that loss and defeated, showboating Naseem Hamed.

Many experts considered Barrera the best fighter in the featherweight division. The oddsmakers agreed, installing him as a 3-1 favorite.

Pacquiao made them look like fools, dominating Barrera for 10 rounds and stopping him in the 11th. “He punches hard, and he’s a great fighter,” Barrera said. “I couldn’t see a lot of things.”

In 2008, Pacquiao fought rival Juan Manuel Marquez for the second time in Sin City. Their first encounter, four years earlier, had ended in a draw, though Pacquiao floored Marquez three times in the second round.

Pacquiao was wobbled early in the rematch but knocked Marquez down in round three. The Mexican great rallied late, but Pacquiao got the nod and picked up the WBC super featherweight title.

The decision was controversial.

Pacquiao said, “I was not convinced by my performance, and I wasn’t able to deliver what the people expected of me. That’s boxing. There are instances where you don’t win a one-sided fight. You can’t always beat your opponent in a lopsided way. They also have fists. It so happened that my fight was close.”

Three months later, he was back in Vegas, easily defeating David Diaz to claim the WBC lightweight title.

Less than a year later, he decimated IBO super lightweight champion Ricky Hatton in two rounds.

“That punch would’ve knocked out a donkey,” said Hatton a few years after the fight.

Pacquiao ended 2009 by moving to the welterweight division and facing the talented Miguel Coto. He pocketed the WBO belt after stopping Cotto in 12 one-sided rounds.

The Ring Magazine chose Pacquiao as their Fighter of the Year for 2008 and 2009.

Back in Texas, Pacquiao faced the much bigger Antonio Margarito. The vacant WBC super welterweight belt was up for grabs. Pacquiao punished Margarito’s face and body for 12 grueling rounds.

Margarito sustained a fractured orbital bone in his right eye. He admitted feeling that his substantial size advantage would be too much for Pacquiao.

“In that fight, I said that there would be no problems; I said that I did not mind him hitting me six times at a time, because when I caught him, I was going to put him away because of this weight limit,” Margarita said in an interview on boxingscene.com. “But I was wrong because Pacquiao, apart from being accurate, was very fast, had a good shot, and hit very hard.”

Following defeats against Timothy Bradley (I had Pacquiao winning) and Marquez (emphatic), Pacquiao regained his championship status by defeating WBO champ Bradley in a rematch in 2014. He lost the title to Floyd Mayweather but recaptured it when he defeated Jessie Vargas two years later.

Five years ago, Pacquiao became the oldest welterweight champion ever when he edged Keith Thurman over 12 intense rounds. Thurman’s pre-fight blather got under Pacquiao’s skin.

“I’m just so motivated for this fight,” he told boxinginsider.com a few days before facing Thurman. “He talks too much, but when he gets in the ring with me, it will be a different story. He’s even gotten my mom upset, so yeah, I’m always motivated for every contest, but this is a little extra.”

It’s never a good idea to make a mom upset.

Trainer Freddie Roach could also see a different Pacquiao. “Manny is a little angry, Roach said. “That makes him more aggressive, and I like it when he comes forward.”

Pacquiao came after Thurman and floored him in the opening stanza. Thurman worked his back into the fight until a Pacquiao body shot slowed him down. With the victory, Pacquiao became the first four-time welterweight champion. He lost the title to cagey Yordenis Ugás two years later.

Pacquiao could be gunning for his fifth title in a decade if his team can agree with WBC titleholder Mario Barrios.

Can a 45-year-old Pacquiao defeat an opponent 16 years his junior? Barrios put a beating on Ugas, the fighter who sent Pacquiao into retirement.

Former welterweight champion Shawn Porter gives Pacquiao the edge over Barrios. “I think Pac will come back,” Porter said last week. “And I think he will win that fight against Barrios.”

Nobody beats Father Time, but Pacquiao, though not as dynamic as he once was, has kept the bad boy at bay for several years – and set some incredible records.

Manny Pacquiao is set to make a significant return to boxing this weekend in Tokyo with the Japanese MMA promotion Rizin.

The 45-year-old Filipino legend will fight Rukiya Anpo , 28, a former K-1 Kickboxing champion, in a boxing-only match.

manny pacquiao 500 million yacht

This fight includes a substantial financial penalty for any rule violations. If Anpo breaks the boxing rules by using illegal strikes such as a kick, he will face a five-million-dollar penalty. This clause mirrors the one used in Floyd Mayweather 's exhibitions with Rizin.

What was Mayweather's experience with Rizin like?

Floyd Mayweather, 47, had two exhibition bouts with Rizin against martial artists, winning both by knockout.

In 2018, he defeated kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa, 25, with a contract that included a penalty for illegal moves.

Confirmed penalties by Rizin president

Rizin president Nobuyuki Sakakibara confirmed the penalty clause in the Pacquiao-Anpo deal.

"Any violation will be punishable by a fine," Sakakibara declared.

There is also the need to factor in the weakness of the Yen in comparison to the dollar and pound at this moment, and the fine in Yen would equate to 750 million Yen.

Pacquiao's return and future prospects

Pacquiao retired in 2021 after losing to Yordenis Ugas but has since participated in an exhibition match, hinting at a potential comeback.

He has been linked to fights with UFC star Conor McGregor , 36, and undefeated British boxer Conor Benn , 27. Recently, the WBC expressed willingness to sanction a fight between Pacquiao and world champion Mario Barrios , 29. Pacquiao's upcoming exhibition in the Far East is seen as preparation for this possible welterweight title shot.

However, there are those who feel this isn't appropriate practice for a return to competitive boxing and that Pacquiao's time at the top of the sport is very much in the past.

Manny Pacquiao's most important fights of career

manny pacquiao 500 million yacht

Manny Pacquiao, one of boxing's all-time greats, faces Lucas Matthysse for the WBA "regular" world welterweight title at the Axiata Arena, Kuala Lumpur on Saturday live on ESPN+ streaming service. Here are some of the key moments in Pacquiao's career.

Dec. 4, 1998 vs. Chatchai Sasakul

Twenty years ago, 18-year-old Pacquiao won his first world title with a left hand to the jaw to knock out local hero Sasakul in Thailand.

The incessant pressure fighting we have become so accustomed to from Pacquiao was evident in the eight rounds of the WBC world flyweight title bout.

In his third year as a professional, Pacquiao lacked a lot of the skills and movement he later showed but still dominated a more experienced opponent in a pivotal moment of his young career.

Nov. 15, 2003 vs. Marco Antonio Barrera I

Now with American trainer Freddie Roach in his corner, Pacquiao won a unanimous decision over Mexican great Barrera for his biggest victory to that point at the Alamodome in San Antonio.

Pacquiao recovered from a first-round knockdown and was well in front on the judges' scorecards before stopping Barrera in the 11th round of a non-title featherweight bout. Pacquiao floored Barrera in the third and 11th rounds before the Mexican's corner stopped the fight.

Barrera, widely considered the world's best featherweight at the time, could not cope with Pacquiao's speed and the end came after he was put under siege against the ropes.

According to CompuBox, Pacquiao landed 257 power punches in his second fight at featherweight, compared to 101 for Barrera.

Jan. 21 and Nov. 19, 2006 vs. Erik Morales II & III

Pacquiao handed Morales two beatings in 2006 to announce himself as a force at junior lightweight.

After losing on points to Morales on his 130-pound debut 10 months previously, Pacquiao became the first man to stop the Mexican idol in a 10th-round TKO win at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.

Pacquiao never stopped punching and overwhelmed Morales, a three-weight world champion.

Later in the year, Pacquiao did an even quicker job on Morales, flooring him three times in a third-round knockout at the same venue.

"For the first time in my career, I actually felt the power of an opponent like I've never felt it before," said Morales, who was never the same again.

June 28, 2008 vs. David Diaz

Pacquiao claimed a fourth world title in as many weight divisions by stopping WBC lightweight champion Diaz in the ninth round at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.

American Diaz could not cope with Pacquiao's speed and his face was left dripping with blood before being knocked out.

"I feel much, much stronger and more powerful at 135 pounds," said Pacquiao, who threw 788 punches to Diaz's 463 in his lightweight debut.

Pacquiao became the first Asian fighter to win world championships in four weight classes.

Nov. 14, 2009 vs. Miguel Cotto

Pacquiao captured a seventh title in a seventh weight class by breaking Cotto's resistance in the last round for the WBO welterweight belt.

As well as another world title, the Filipino phenomenon claimed an impressive win with many now seeing him as boxing's No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter.

Cotto, a naturally bigger man who had been campaigning as a welterweight for three years, was overwhelmed in the second half of the fight at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

In his first fight at welterweight, six months after he had separated Ricky Hatton from his senses at junior welterweight, Pacquiao was too quick and showed he could take a punch at 147 pounds.

Pacquiao, 30 at the time, floored Cotto in the third and fourth rounds before forcing the stoppage in the last round.

"I didn't know where the punches were coming from," Cotto said.

Dec. 8, 2012 vs. Juan Manuel Marquez IV

Pacquaio's air of invincibility was shattered when Marquez knocked him out in their fourth meeting.

After crushing Cotto, Pacquiao went from strength to strength, and impressed in wins over Joshua Clottey, Antonio Margarito (for his eighth title in as many weight classes) and Shane Mosley.

Pacquiao edged a close 2011 fight with Marquez by a majority decision and even when his seven-year winning streak was broken by a split-points defeat to Tim Bradley in June 2012, the points decision was met with heavy criticism.

But Marquez, 39, ensured there were no doubts as to the winner of their thrilling fourth encounter.

Pacquiao was down twice in the third round and Mexican Marquez touched down in the fifth before the sensational finish. Marquez landed a seismic overhand right following a missed jab that sent Pacquiao crashing face first to the canvas.

"I was careless. He's not an easy opponent," Pacquiao said.

Marquez's stunning moment made the series 2-1 to Pacquiao, with one draw.

May 2, 2015 vs. Floyd Mayweather

This really was the one we had all been waiting for -- but the clash to decide boxing's pound-for-pound No. 1 never came close to living up to the hype.

Pacquiao was hampered by a right shoulder injury, sustained before the fight, during the richest bout of all time that took over five years to make.

Pacquiao was already assured of boxing immortality but what was less certain going into the fight was his fitness. It showed and Mayweather ran away with a unanimous decision for the WBC, WBA and WBO world welterweight titles at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

The fight made a record $500 million and gave Mayweather the right to call himself the undisputed pound-for-pound king of his -- and Pacquiao's -- era.

July 2, 2017 vs. Jeff Horn

OK, so this was not Pacman's most sparkling performance, but it is relevant for showing the eight-weight world champion's dwindling powers.

The unanimous points decision (117-111, 115-113 and 115-113) in favor of Australian Horn was criticized, but Pacquiao looked a shadow of his brilliant best. He lacked the speed and sharpness of previous years at Brisbane's Lang Park in Australia.

Horn captured the WBO world welterweight title from Pacquiao, who paid for a slow start and has not fought since.
