Some kamainas and a visitor did the 1.5 hr sunset cruise. Great experience! There's 6 viewing tubes (each are maybe 2' x 3') that you can gather around to see underneath the boat. The clarity was remarkable. Fun to see fish, and the color of the water was beautiful. Austin and Jim were great. Austin gave history of some of the Waikiki hotels and parts of the bay. He stopped the boat a few times and Jim threw out food to attract fish. Wonderful view of the city and Diamond Head. Jim took photos for anyone who requested. The view of sunset from the boat was beautiful. Austin said the daytime cruises see more wildlife so plan your trip according to what you want. I loved the breeze on the boat but some people may get chilly and want a sweater. You can bring food, drinks, alcohol. Small water containers are provided but bring your own to avoid disposable plastic. There's a small bathroom on the boat. Loved the whole thing. I'm gonna do daytime trip next time. Thanks Austin and Jim!

We had a great ride. The captain jason and Kalama were awesome and made every effort to find sea critters for us to see. We saw 2 schools of fish, 4 turtles, and many many many jumping dolphins off the side of the boat. The boat ride was also lovely to see the coastline and beaches It should be noted that the glass bottom is limited to 4 floor port holes that are about 4x4 ft and not the whole bottom of the boat. Would be more accurately named "glass port boat"

Cliff offered a beautiful boad ride, him and his staff are very friendly. They provided water and took photos of our family with the amazing backdrops of Diamond Head and shared history. The water is so clear, it was easy to see coral and many different sealife. The glass bottom boat allows you to bring on your own beverages to enjoy on the ride. We had a great time enjoying the views and booked the Friday night fireworks boat ride. Thank you, Cliff & staff!

The glass boat ride was a perfect way to soak up the beautiful waters & sights on our last day in Hawaii . Until we meet again...

Captain and co-captain were some of the friendliest people I've met in Hawaii thus far! While it was a slow day on the ocean and not much of the aquatic life was present, they managed to get us close enough to 2 turtles, a monk seal and some trigger fish! Crew did a few rounds asking people if they like to take family photos. It's refreshing not to have to ask staff members to take photos! While it was a hot day, the ocean breeze was so refreshing! Weather and crew attitudes made this little mini tour worth it! I would love to go out on their boat again!

The tour is about 1 hour and you get chance to see fishes, dolphins and turtles. We are lucky enough to see all three. Worth the $40.

Photo of Matt R.

Jim and K were awesome! So knowledgeable about the landscape and inserted funny stuff at the appropriate intervals. No groaners here! Had so much fun on this little excursion.

Photo of Anne M.

Quick 1 hour glass bottom boat tour was only $40 per person. We went on a super windy day but still got to see many turtles and fish!! Very friendly staff and informative about the local history and gave great recommendations for activities Would recommend (:

Photo of Melanie O.

Awesome - Jason and Kalama are the perfect team. Jason would say, it would be great to see a turtle and bam! just like that Kalama would point one out. That happened with this cool looking needle nose fish, whales, and other turtles - we saw so much! Random facts I learned from Jason - humpback whales summer in Hawaii and Baja, Diamondhead was a vent for a much larger volcano, male turtles have longer tails, good places to eat lunch nearby... just a wealth of info. We went at the end of March and saw a mama whale with her calf - whale tail and all. Was debating between going whale watching and the glass bottom - did the latter because I wanted something shorter... and I got two for the price of one! Oh and I left my bag on the boat and Kalama ran out to bring it to me. A+ experience!

Photo of Sophia E.

The view was beautiful, the staff were great and my family and i loved it! It's such a nice ride with good music, cool facts about what we're seeing and I'd recommend it if you're in town! The staff was the best. Jim, Camille and Stokes were 10/10

Photo of Antonio M.

Absolute magical experience. Both Brandon and Jason were terrific hosts/ captains. Extremely knowledgeable, these guys work hard to provide every passenger with an unforgettable session. They provide water, as it's essential to hydrate before going out to sea. Immediately upon leaving the harbor we were greeted by tons of fish. We saw a couple sea turtles. They both spotted whale activity and immediately rushed over to get a more intimate view of a Humpback mother and calf. I emphasize RUSHED, as these guys prioritize the passengers' viewing experience. It was awesome and in no way did it feel tourist-trappish. Just a great opportunity to catch a glimpse of the local ocean wildlife and have a whale of a time! Little reference to the god tier dad jokes shared onboard by our captain lol.

Change policy, what if i am prone to seasickness.

Consider taking an over the counter motion sickness preventative before your cruise if you are worried about sea sickness. Just in case, motion sickness tablets and bracelets are available on-board for a fee.

We recommend booking at least 3-4 days in advance. If you have very specific schedule requirements and are not flexible, please book sooner. Last-minute bookings are often possible, but availability is limited.

Passenger Vessel News Roundup | January 3 – Russian ferries and tour boats plus Chinese-built large Ro-Paxes for Western European owners

A French operator welcomes a new ferry to its fleet as two new electric commuter vessels commence operational trials in the Russian capital. A Chinese yard launches the second vehicle ferry in a series ordered by a Finnish shipowner. Finally, a Russian tour operator will expand its fleet with the acquisition of four catamaran newbuildings within the next two years.

Brittany Ferries welcomes third LNG-fuelled Ro-Pax in series

Photo: Stena RoRo

Brittany Ferries recently took delivery of the third LNG-fuelled Ro-Pax vessel in a series built for the company by China Merchants Jinling Shipyard Weihai.

As with earlier sisters Galicia and Salamanca , Santona was ordered by Sweden's Stena RoRo on behalf of Brittany Ferries. The newbuild has a length of 215 metres, a displacement of approximately 42,200 tonnes, and 3,000 lane metres of space for cars and lorries.

Santona will begin serving Brittany Ferries' UK-Spain routes alongside Salamanca later this year.

Electric ferries undergo trials on Russia's Moskva River

Photo: Moscow Department of Transport and Road Infrastructure Development

Two new electric commuter ferries have begun undergoing operational trials on the Moskva River in the Russian capital Moscow.

Sinichka and Filka have already sailed a total of 7,000 kilometres on the river as part of the trials, the Moscow Department of Transport and Road Infrastructure Development (Moscow Deptrans) confirmed via social media.

The trials also include navigation under winter conditions with broken surface ice.

Russian owner orders four catamaran tour boats

Photo: United Shipbuilding Corporation

Russian shipowner State Transport Leasing Company, operator Neva Travel, and Sredne-Nevsky Shipbuilding Plant have entered into an agreement on the construction and delivery of four catamaran sightseeing vessels.

The vessels will each have capacity for 150 passengers across two decks and a speed of 11 knots. All interior spaces will also include areas for travellers with limited mobility.

The first two catamarans will enter service in 2024 while the remaining pair will follow in 2025.

Finnlines' newest ferry floated out in China

Photo: Finnlines

Finnlines' newest Ro-Pax ferry was floated out at the facilities of China Merchants Jinling Shipyard Weihai on Friday, December 30.

Finncanopus is the second ferry in a series ordered by Finnlines from the same builder. Once completed, it will measure 235 metres long and will have space for 1,100 passengers and up to 5,100 lane metres of freight.

Finncanopus will join sister vessel Finnsirius in operating between Finland and Sweden beginning later this year.

Moscow Mule

Liquor.com has been serving drinks enthusiasts and industry professionals since 2009. Our writers are some of the most respected in the industry, and our recipes are contributed by bartenders who form a veritable "Who's Who" of the cocktail world.

The Moscow Mule is a classic combination of vodka, ginger beer, and lime. Known for it's iconic copper mug, the drink's enduring popularity has left it as a mainstay in bars since the mid-20th century. Despite its name, the Moscow Mule was actually invented in Los Angeles as part of an early stateside marketing push for vodka, and the drink itself is considered an example of the Buck family of drinks—those that include a spirit with citrus and ginger beer.

The History of the Moscow Mule

The Moscow Mule is a mid-century classic that was born in 1941 and helped contribute to vodka’s rise in America. As the legend goes , it was concocted by two men. John Martin needed to sell Smirnoff vodka, a new and generally unknown spirit during the middle of the 20th century that his distribution company had recently purchased. Another man, bar owner Jack Morgan, wanted to deplete the stash of ginger beer taking up space at his Cock ‘n’ Bull pub. They decided to combine the two ingredients with a little lime, and the rest is history. (Though there is a conflicting origin story that says that a bartender by the name of Wes Price was the true originator of the cocktail’s recipe.)

The origin of the Moscow Mule mug is slightly less clear, though evidence points to the connection originating with a Russian woman named Sophie Berezinski, who's father owned copper factory called Moscow Copper Co. Allegedly, poor sales in their home country left the younger Berezinski to travel to the U.S. to find new buyers.

As historian David Wondrich observes, the copper mugs reached Cock 'n' Bull and were used to create a visually distinct presentation for the new cocktail, helped along by Martin who took Polaroid instant photos (then a recent invention) of Los Angeles bartenders and guests holding the copper mugs alongside bottles of Smirnoff. The photos were displayed throughout the bar and given to patrons to share, almost in the same vein as modern social media influencers. As the photos proliferated throughout the Los Angeles cocktail community, it helped to spur demand for the novel drink.

Regardless of how the drink was invented, the easygoing combination of vodka, spicy ginger and tart lime—all packaged neatly in an eye-catching mug—was a hit. More than a quarter century later, the Moscow Mule remains a star. It has even spawned variations, like the Mezcal Mule with mezcal and the Kentucky Mule with bourbon.

Why the Moscow Mule Works

The simple cocktail combines vodka with ginger beer and fresh lime juice. It’s a no-tools-required drink that is built right in that shiny copper mug. Of course, while said mug is always preferred for serving, it’s not essential and shouldn’t deter you from making a Moscow Mule. The drink tastes great no matter the receptacle. So if a highball glass or rocks glass is all you have on hand, don’t fret.

Any preferred vodka will work nicely in the mule, but high-quality ginger beer is a must. You want a top-notch option that and offers enough of a spicy bite to complement the liquor and lime. And keep that bottle cold before you employ it your Moscow Mule. Cold keeps the bubbles brisk and helps stall dilution when you mix all the drink’s ingredients.

This recipe brings the legendary drink up to date while remaining true to its refreshing roots. At its core, the Moscow Mule is deceptively simple and incredibly easy to mix, perfect for any season.

Ingredients

2 ounces vodka

1/2 ounce lime juice , freshly squeezed

3 ounces ginger beer , chilled

Garnish: lime wheel

Fill a Moscow Mule mug (or highball glass) with ice, then add the vodka and lime juice.

Top with the ginger beer.

Garnish with a lime wheel.

What If I Don’t Have a Copper Mug?

No doubt about it: The textured copper mug is a gorgeous part of a classic Moscow Mule. Truth is, it’s less the copper that matters than the conductivity of copper as a type of metal. So, blasphemous as it may appear, a Julep cup—or any other metal container—is a delightful substitute. Because you’ll still get that frosty, deeply cold result.
