A gulet is a classic wooden, motorized, and sailing boat that is perfect for long sea voyages and close-to-land cruises.

Traditional Turkish gulets are made-to-order boats that skilled artisans construct from wood. Because they provide a very comfortable cruising experience, gulets, often referred to as motor sailboats, are perfect for coastal excursions and lengthy sea cruises.

We are aware that the first gulet construction began in Turkey’s Bodrum region. However, production is also taking place in Bozburun, Marmaris, Fethiye, and Istanbul as a result of the expanding market and demand.

Types of Gulets

They do not construct them on particularly lengthy decks, often between 15 and 25 meters, like other kinds. The same standards apply to their cabins. If you like sailing, this is the best option.

Accommodation on Gulets

Reconnecting as a family.

We really couldn’t fault it and had a very relaxing time reconnecting as a family.  We discussed possible routes with Captain Gurol and he definitely chose the right one for us being the Gulf of Gokova, lots of wonderful coves, clear water, able to find quiet spots, and not too much long distance motoring. Once we have noted your preferences, we will compile a shortlist of possibilities comprising 5 to 10 yachts of varying specifications (size, interior style, type of crew, etc); following which, we will narrow it down to 2 or 3 options, all of which would make excellent choices.

This process can be repeated with multiple permutations in order to arrive at the most suitable selection for you.

What is the cost of a yacht charter?

We specialize in crewed vessels, where prices can range anywhere from € 5,000 per week up to more than € 1 million per week. Most of our charters fall into three price levels:   

• From € 10,000 to € 30,000 per week: This price range has the largest variety of yachts, and includes smaller vessels - motor and sail, gulets, and classic yachts. When booking, it is important to ensure proper maintenance inspections have been carried out, and the crews are professionally trained, speak fluent English, and can provide excellent service. Around 30% of our customers book vessels in this range. 
• From € 30,000 to € 100,000 per week: This price level is becoming more popular every season. It includes a wide range of yachts, traditional and modern. These are high-specification vessels offering every imaginable comfort. Around 50% of our clients book yachts in this price range. 
• From € 100,000 per week: This price level includes ultra-luxury vessels such as mega yachts. These are the most highly sought-after charter yachts in the world, with a wide range of high-end water toys onboard - including jet skis, a helipad, and even a submarine. These charters are very bespoke and every detail is managed to cater to exacting requirements.  A small percentage of our clients book these superyachts.

How do you help me plan the itinerary?

For each destination, we provide all the most popular itineraries/routes that are being followed.

The first step is to go through the itinerary and determine your starting point. This usually covers check-in and check-out locations, and some of the highlights (islands, towns, nature parks, bays, locations), that you would prefer to visit.

Second, the tailor-made route is refined to maximize each port of call. You can elect to stay longer in some places and omit others.

Third, we customize your itinerary according to your group structure and preferences. If you have small children or teenagers, or if you are an active group of older people traveling without children, or if you are in your 30s traveling with friends who like to party, you can all follow the same route. You can all arrive at the same island, for example, yet experience it in a completely different way:

• Families with young children: we will find the best and safest beaches where you can swim and relax 
• Teenagers might enjoy activities such as water sports
• Older groups may wish to visit historic places, enjoy a leisurely lunch at a local restaurant, or visit a wine cellar
• Those who like to party might wish to sleep during the day and stay up til the wee hours.

How can we make your yacht charter personalized?

To ensure a unique and tailor-made charter experience, we will send you a detailed questionnaire eight (8) weeks before you embark on your yacht. You can tell us your group's preferences and special requirements, such as dietary or medical needs, any particular wishes regarding exercise, entertainment, or if you are celebrating a special occasion.

What is the reservation process?

Your first point of contact at Goolets will be with a Concierge Assistant /Yacht charter planner. This involves a full review and confirmation of all of your wishes. This information is collated, and then we confirm availability with the yacht owner. We then prepare the necessary paperwork including the charter contract which is signed three ways - by you (the charterer), by us (the broker), and by the yacht owner. Upon payment of a 50% deposit, the yacht booking is secured.

Your wishlist is compiled and the planning for your trip commences - usually one or two months prior to departure. You will be sent a questionnaire where you will confirm the passenger names, your menu preferences, any food allergies, whether you need airport transfers booked, and so on. We communicate with the yacht’s crew and create a day-by-day itinerary.

Final payments are made 4 weeks prior to departure, and all relevant travel documents and destination advice are issued. The crew is briefed on any last-minute requests.

At check-in, our destination experts will arrange everything on the ground to ensure easy embarkation.

We stay in contact throughout your holiday to ensure everything is going as planned.

How does the charter agreement work?

Once your chosen yacht has been confirmed, we will send you a standard MYBA or Goolets charter agreement that needs to be signed. If your chosen cruise route requires a different embarking or disembarking place other than the yacht's central harbor, delivery/redelivery fees may apply.

What are the payment terms?

After signing the MYBA or Goolets charter agreement, a deposit of 50% of the total charter cost is required. You can pay the fee via bank transfer or credit card (only Visa or MasterCard). The other 50%, an Advance Provisioning Allowance (if applicable), taxes, positioning fees and any previously agreed charges are payable via bank transfer eight (8) weeks before departure.

Any previously agreed charges need to be settled via bank transfer six (6) weeks before departure.

How are the charter rates calculated?

Charter rates are estimated weekly. If a charter exceeds seven days, they are calculated pro-rata against the weekly rate divided by seven and multiplied by the number of charter days. Keep in mind that some yachts are only chartered on a weekly (Saturday-Saturday or Sunday-Sunday) basis, especially during the high season.

High and low season rates vary depending on charter locations and types of yachts. The high rates apply to the most popular charter periods (July/August and Christmas/New Year), and to all major events. Low season rates apply to all other periods.

The charter rates on our website are up to date but may be subject to change.

What are the actual operating expenses?

Once you made the final payment of the charter, you pay the Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA). Under MYBA terms, this fee is usually between 30% - 40% of the total charter cost.

This covers the operating expenses of a charter (explained under Charter Terms), such as fuel, food, drinks, port fees, and ad hoc incidentals. The APA is given to the captain before the start of your charter. Some yachts and gulets also offer food/drinks packages which are normally paid in cash during embarkation, while the port taxes are paid during embarkation according to the costs presented by the captain. The Captain ensures that the yacht is fully fuelled and stocked when you step on board.

While an up-to-date summary of accounts can be requested at any time during your charter, a full set of accounts will normally be submitted by your captain at the end of the cruise.

In case of surpassing the amount of money already paid during your yacht charter (with the APA), additional funds (in cash) will be required at once. If there is an outstanding balance from the yacht charter, it should be settled in cash or by bank transfer before you disembark. In case of a remaining credit at the end of your charter, you will be fully reimbursed.

If a transfer by car to and from the yacht is required, it can be arranged either by the charter company or by the yacht’s captain, payment for which will be deducted from your APA.

Should I get any insurance?

In case of unforeseen circumstances that might prevent the charter, we highly recommend taking out the Cancellation and Curtailment Insurance to protect the investment. Besides that, the guests should be covered by Personal Accident and Medical Insurance, and their belongings are insured against theft, loss, or damage. Charterers’ Liability insurance is also highly recommended. Contact your broker for further assistance and additional advice regarding the insurance.

Do any other taxes apply?

For charters in European waters, Value Added Tax and delivery costs may be charged on the gross Charter Fee, due to the European Union tax legislation. In other countries, local taxes may also apply. Depending on your chosen charter destination, our brokers will provide any prevalent rates.

Are the tips for the crew mandatory?

Even though tips are not mandatory, the guests normally extend a gratuity to the devoted crew. The amount depends on the guest's satisfaction, but it is approximately 10% of the charter fee. The tips are equally distributed among all crew members by the captain.

The traditional Turkish Gulet is a handmade vessel crafted from wood by highly skilled master craftsmen. Also known as motor sailors, Gulets are extremely comfortable and ideal for long sea voyages as well as inshore coastal trips.

The origin of Gulets can be traced back to the Bodrum area in Turkey but the growth of a demanding market led to their construction being started in Bozburun, Marmaris, Fethiye and Istanbul. High quality and durable wood such as teak, maun and iroko are chiefly used to construct beautiful and sturdy Gulets.

GULET TYPES

Gulet: The most popular type of traditional yacht for the "Blue Cruise" is the gulet. It is a cruising yacht with large, rounded stern area which is well-suited for comfortable eating and lounging. Gulets usually have ketch (marconi) or schooner-rigging, with one, two or three foresails. Their lenghts change between 15 to 55 meters and they accommodate 6 to 24 persons in 3 to 12 cabins with private shower and WC.

Aynakic (Ketch): It has a raised, squared-off stern that allows space for additional cabins below compared to a gulet. There may be a large master cabin at the stern. They accommodate 6 to 24 persons in 3 to 12 double bedded cabins with private shower and WC. They are generally ketch (marconi)-rigging and measure 15 to 55 meters.

Tirhandil: It is the oldest type of local wooden boat with a pointed stern which is suited best for sailing in Aegean waters. Originally most had lateen sails; now the rigging varies from sloop to cutter to gaff. They normally measure between 11 to 24 meters in lenght and accommodate 6 to 10 persons in 3 to 5 double bedded cabins with private shower and WC.

FACILITIES ON GULET

The design of traditional Turkish Gulets has indeed evolved along the ages and a modern day Gulet is a plush and comfortable blue cruising boat varying from 11 to 55 meters (36-180 feet) in length. The length of the Gulet is proportional to its passenger capacity. Gulets are furnished with great taste and style to offer maximum comfort and facilities to the passengers on board. Each standard cabin in a Gulet has portholes, wardrobe, mirror, air conditioning system, en-suite shower and WC. Master cabins are furnished beautifully with sofa sets, dresser, work desk and Jacuzzi or hydro massage shower to pamper the guests on board. There are separate cabins for the crew.

The deck area is exceptionally spacious and complemented by the finest sailing equipment, sun mattresses and cushions so that passengers can enjoy a pleasurable vacation at sea! It was a four night, five-day sailing holiday along the Mediterranean coast from Fethiye to Olympus. Choosing to partly detox from an Internet addiction, and relax at the same time, the experience was ten times better than any spa retreat offers. However, speaking to friends after the event, it seemed that the biggest misconception people have about gulet sailing holidays in Turkey, is that you’ll spend all day, every day on the boat being bored, but it is about much more than that. Firstly, if you are a novice to gulet cruising, it helps to understand the unique background, concept and what makes them different from others sailing vessels. What is a Gulet in Turkey? When you book gulet sailing holidays in Turkey, you are venturing into an age-old nautical tradition. Gulets are traditional, handcrafted wooden boats with two or three masts. Although other countries such as Italy, Montenegro, and Croatia, use gulets, Turkey has an esteemed and long-established reputation for making gulet boats, especially in Bodrum and Bozburun, two coastal hubs on the west and southwest coast. Their original use was for sponge diving and fishing, but over the years, the concept has evolved to become overnight floating hotels. Bodrum: The town, a favoured holiday destination for British people as well as Turks, has spearheaded Turkey’s tourism drive ever since the 1980s. As well as selling budget holidays, it also offers luxurious experiences leading it to become a favourite destination for rich and wealthy celebrities. Marmaris: Another destination particularly favoured by the Brits, the harbour and marina area is a hive of everything nautical. Within the town itself, there is not much to do the area, however, is exceptionally scenic, explaining why it is a major sailing hub. Things to Do on Gulet Sailing Holidays in Turkey As mentioned before, although the term “sailing holidays” imply, it is all about being at sea, gulet cruising is about a lot more than that, namely the diversity of things to do. 1: Explore the small coastal towns The Turkish Riviera has many small, coastal towns, each with their characteristics. Gulets dock in either overnight or for the day, giving you time to wander and explore. Kas on the Mediterranean coast is a perfect example because despite embracing modern living, it has kept its authentic atmosphere, making it one of the quaintest places in Turkey. 2: Get to places only accessible by boat Many uninhabited islands surround Turkey, and some of them such as Gemiler just outside Fethiye are worth exploring. Ruined Christian churches and a fantastic view make it a preferred place at night for boats to drop anchor. Kekova sunken ruins is another area ideally explored by boat for the best view. 3: Sleep on deck During my blue cruise, I never slept in my cabin. Instead preferring the deck at the front of the boat, I thoroughly enjoyed going to sleep under the stars. There is something peaceful about just listening to the sounds of nature as you drop off and as much as my cabin was comfortable and quiet, I choose to sleep on deck every time. 4: See Caretta Caretta turtles It is a guaranteed certainty you will see the endangered Caretta turtles if you cruise the Mediterranean coast but in particular, the Simena area. One morning, a small group came swimming around the boat for food and seeing their size, I realised their stamina was strong despite their docile appearance. 5: Gorgeous sunsets Watching a Turkish sunset dip over the horizon is a favourite evening activity of mine because I am not talking about average sunsets here. The Mediterranean and Aegean coasts, boast of vibrant orange sunsets that are big attractions for tourists, who cannot resist getting their camera out to snap the view. 6: Catch your dinner Of course, if you do not like fish or seafood, the cook will whip up many alternative dishes, but for fish lovers, part of the thrill is catching your dinner and BBQing it. From sea to plate within 20 minutes. You cannot get any fresher than that! 7: Snorkelling and diving Most gulet boats have snorkelling equipment on board, which you are welcome to use when they stop for swimming breaks. Alternatively, Turkey is a scuba diving paradise with many underwater wrecks and various sea life. If you spend half a day in any scuba diving town, your boat captain can pre-book lessons for you, whether you are a novice or experienced. 8: Ice-cream deliveries! In many spots around the coastline where boats dock in for swimming or overnight breaks, floating ice-cream boats offer the perfect refreshment. Pulling alongside the gulet and coming on board with many choices, it is a quirky concept of waiter service. 9: Jet-skis and parasailing Likewise, anywhere boats gather, jet skis are for hire and passengers can parasail behind a speed boat. Jet skiing attracts adrenaline junkies while paragliding is an alternative bird’s eye view of the gorgeous landscape. 10: Visit historical ruins of ancient civilizations Many Blue Cruise routes on the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts, stop by coastal historical ruins of which Turkey has hundreds. The Med coast was home to the Lycians, who left behind glorious cities such as Patara and Olympus, set in an overgrown forest. Their ancient cities have also sparked an official trekking route, one of the longest in the world taking as much as three months to complete. 11: See the Greek Dodecanese Islands Although, the most popular routes of gulet sailing holidays in Turkey focus on the Turkish Riviera, mix your holiday with Greek destinations of which, the Dodecanese islands are perfect. 150 of them sit in the south Aegean Sea, just a short distance from Turkey. The two most famous are Kos, and Rhodes, however smaller islands like Simi, are ideal for getting off the beaten track.
