Nice place to stop for a resupply on the ICW. Plenty of marine businesses and Uber is available

Great experience with top notch facilities. Boat ramp was a little crowded and took 45 minutes to get the boat launched. Otherwise problem free. We were able to get ice/snack/bait/fuel all in one place. Had a great trip on the water and caught yellowfin until my arms wouldn't move. I'm not kidding, the fish boxes were all full and we had to start just throwing them on the deck of the boat!

Bad boat ramp, no parking closer than a mile. Have to park at a lot 4 blocks down and be charged for using it.

Amazing People! Open to the public for launching. Educated staff. Friendly boaters. They always have live bait!!

First of all they are extremely rude the place is filthy and the bathrooms are disgusting- worse than any portapody I've ever been in - do not use them under any circumstances

Do not, I mean, do not rent a pontoon boat from this marina. At first they accommodated us and seemed friendly. We set up an afternoon pontoon rental to go explore and fish. Upon arrival they put us in a room to watch a safety video, which was a JOKE in itself. The safety video was about North Carolina boat laws (ummmmm last I checked, we live Texas.) The lady said North Carolina boat laws are the same, but in my opinion, spend a couple of bucks and purchase a texas safety video. On top of that, there were huge dead roaches on the ground in the little room where we were placed to watch the video (I stood outside the room.) Once we completed the video we walked outside to the boat. All seemed ok until we arrived to our boat. The boat was filthy and I mean disgustingly dirty. There was dirt all over the seats and floor. I looked at the lady and asked her why the boy was so dirty. She stated, "I'm the only person working here and I wasn't able to clean it!" Are you kidding me?! We're paying over $400 to rent a filthy boat?! I mean it was so dirty we couldn't even sit on the seats. I asked her for wet clothes so we could personally clean the boat. She literally searched for one cloth, brought it back, and handed it to me. She refused to clean the boat. We had to personally clean all the seats ourselves. I've never in my whole time of ever renting boats have ever experienced something so unprofessional and dirty. The only reason I didn't cancel: we had family in town from midland, Texas and we drove an hour and half to rent the boat. There's no way we drove that distance not to get on the water. Once we finally were able to leave the marina the boat barely ran. I worked so hard to turn the steering wheel to the left and right throughout the rental. Plain and simple....they should not be able to rent unsafe boats to potential renters. Be aware....the boats are old and unkept. Save your money and headaches and take your business somewhere else. This company deserves a Zero!

Been in this marina for a few years. It's old and been hoping that the new owners would invest in improving the property. The only thing that is good is the dry stack. For covered boat slips, the roof is rusting and you have to constantly keep the rust off your boat. The only good benefit is that it is the closest marina near open gulf waters. I'm hoping that the management becomes more customer friendly and makes some much needed capital improvements. The customer service is poor, so most tenants don't even bother to complain.

Photo of Andy M.

Its difficult what to make of this place. I called them to arrange a boat slip with lift. First don't send them a contact me e-mail or leave phone messages because they do not respond. I spoke twice with a lady there. The first time she thought they might have a slip but needed to check with maintenance. A couple of days went by with no response so I called and left a voice message with no response. I called a third time and got the same lady who told me she had not heard back from maintenance. At which point I asked what did maintenance have to do with it, do they have to confirm the boat lift works? I asked, she said yes. I left her my number again and a week later I still have not heard off them. At which point I contacted Surfside Marina and their response and service to enquiries has been outstanding. I guess the Yacht Basin does not need paying customers!.

Photo of Troy L.

This marina is a DUMP! GYB seems to continue to go downhill, there is a reason the marina is half-empty and they are offering six months free rent. The bathrooms are filthy, the docks are covered with bird poop, and the covered slips rain rust down on your boat. Management does not care or have any customer service. They will promise you anything to get you to sign a lease then change the rules. Recently when my current year lease expired, I explained to management that my boat was up for sale and I did not expect to have it for another year. They offered me a month-to-month or a year lease while selling my boat. The year lease was $90 a month cheaper with the option to break the lease at any time and pay the month-to-month rate for the months I occupied the slip. After three months I sold my boat, they decided to keep my $540 deposit and say they forgot to mention that my deposit was forfeited. Even though this was all documented in email I was told they made a mistake but too bad. I also was told the pump out and boat ramp was included then later they change the rules. The pump out is now $20 per use and the boat ramp is $1500 per year. How considerate to tack on $1500 per year fee to the $460 per month slip fee. The fuel dock might be open or it might not, depending on the day, don't bother expecting them to be open during the posted hours. Same thing applies to the bait camp, no real hours, just open when they want. Read the online reviews and talk to people who have spent time at this marina before signing a lease.

Topside Marinas | Marina Acquisitions and Operation

A Texas-based, family owned company that acquires and operates high quality marinas around the country.

TopSide Marinas Acquires Premier Waterfront Assets Galveston Yacht Basin and Beavers Bend Marina

Nov 16, 2021 | Blog

Beavers Bend Marina, Broken Bow Oklahoma

DALLAS, TX (September 20, 2021)

Texas-based TopSide Marinas opened its doors in January of 2020. Backed by Miramar Equity Partners and TRT Holdings, the family-owned firm acquires, owns, and operates high-quality marinas throughout the United States. Started by two friends with a passion for the outdoors and a love of the water, co-founders and boating enthusiasts Stephen Lehn and Jacob Boan put a strong emphasis on customer service–and fun.

“Everything we do comes back to hospitality. We want to foster environments where families and friends feel welcome to come and enjoy their time on the water. I grew up boating inland Texas lakes and along the Gulf Coast and those are some of my favorite childhood memories. We want to be the destinations where future generations come to connect and have fun together,” said Stephen Lehn, co-founder of TopSide.

TopSide approaches every transaction with a high level of integrity and puts a strong emphasis on understanding the history of the marinas it acquires.

“We partner with marina owners who have spent an immense amount of time, effort and energy building impressive businesses. We take that to heart and believe it’s our job to first understand that legacy, then continue it,” said Jacob Boan, co-founder of TopSide.

TopSide’s first acquisition in early 2021 was Beavers Bend Marina located on Broken Bow Lake in Broken Bow, Oklahoma–a top vacation destination for residents of North Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana. Ahead of the summer boating season, TopSide constructed 20 new wet slips (bringing the total to 350) and made a significant investment in purchasing new rental boats (bringing the fleet to 60 total). The marina wrapped up a successful 2021 season serving an unprecedented 200,000+ visitors. TopSide is partnering with Oklahoma State Parks and the Army Corps of Engineers to expand the marina’s storage capacity and further enhance its existing services to meet the strong demand. Michelle and George Ash of Simply Marinas brokered the deal.

In August TopSide acquired its second marina, Galveston Yacht Marina , from sellers Greg Pappas and Rocky Sullivan, managing members of GYB Investors LLC. For four decades this marina has offered the best access to open water for the 7.2 million Galvestonians and tourists who visit Galveston Island every year. Located minutes from the Gulf of Mexico and right off the Galveston Ship Channel, Galveston Yacht Marina serves boating enthusiasts and avid anglers visiting to explore the endless gulf coast inshore and offshore fishing. The marina offers ample boat storage (500 wet slips and 260 dry stack racks), transient storage, fishing boat charters, service, fuel, and a retail and bait store.

When they acquired the property 2011, Greg and Rocky immediately kicked off a multi-year capital improvement program to resolve damage from Hurricane Ike. Construction of a 57,000-square-foot dry-stack storage facility, re-roofing and painting the covered wet slips, overhauling all structures on the premises, and building and opening the Marina Bar & Grill restaurant all happened during their tenure.

“We were very impressed with Stephen and Jacob, the principals of TopSide. They acted with integrity and did everything they said they would. It was clear to Greg and me that they had the industry experience, operational plan, and necessary capital to close on the transaction,” said Rocky Sullivan, manager of GYB Investors LLC.

TopSide aims to amplify that impressive track record by investing in the property–improvements to existing wet slips and facilities are underway.

TopSide plans to continue acquiring marinas and will consider all opportunities within the United States, including properties located on lakes, rivers, and along the coast.

“We are incredibly proud to be carrying on the legacies of these two marinas. Our focus moving forward is to serve the Broken Bow and Galveston communities impeccably,” said Stephen Lehn, co-founder of TopSide. “We’re also continuing to grow our family of marinas, meeting marina owners, and expanding throughout the U.S.,” said Jacob Boan, co-founder of TopSide.

The NOAA Marine Debris Program Recommends 13 New Projects for Funding to Remove Marine Debris Under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law

After a highly competitive review process, the NOAA Marine Debris Program is proud to announce 13 new projects recommended for funding under our NOAA Marine Debris Removal and Interception Technologies grant awards for Fiscal Year 2024. These projects represent an investment in over $23 million in federal funding for marine debris removal. The recommended projects under the two separate nationwide competitive funding opportunities continue the NOAA Marine Debris Program’s commitment to make tangible, beneficial impacts to coastal and marine habitats and communities across the nation.

Funding for these opportunities was provided through the  Bipartisan Infrastructure Law . The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law is a transformational opportunity to make an impact against the climate crisis across the country. This initiative includes the prevention, mitigation, and removal of marine debris from coastal communities and marine ecosystems.

These competitions focused on two priority areas. The first funding opportunity focused on the removal of large-scale marine debris, such as abandoned and derelict vessels and derelict fishing gear. The second funding opportunity focused on marine debris removal through the deployment and management of proven debris interception technologies.

The Fiscal Year 2024 recommended projects are:

American Samoa Department of Port Administration (American Samoa, $3,049,396) will assess and remove abandoned vessels from the waters surrounding Tutuila Island, American Samoa. The project will also collaborate with the American Samoa Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Marine and Wildlife Resources to monitor removal sites. Learn more about this project.

City of Benton Harbor (Michigan, $1,032,500) will remove large marine debris in Ox Creek, which feeds into Lake Michigan, and contribute to ongoing revitalization efforts identified by adjacent communities facing environmental/climate and socioeconomic burdens. The City will also engage the community to develop creative solutions to prevent littering and illegal dumping. Learn more about this project.

City of Oakland (California, $3,164,649) will remove abandoned and derelict vessels and other large debris items including appliances, furniture, and a large debris pile from the Oakland Alameda Estuary. The project will also institute a boat buy-back program and lead shoreline cleanups and outreach efforts involving estuary stakeholders, marinas, local aquatic teams and clubs, businesses, neighborhood groups, and the extended estuary community to raise awareness and collaborate on solutions to prevent marine debris. Learn more about this project.

Gulf of Alaska Keeper (Alaska, $3,799,493) will work with community-based partners to conduct a high-impact removal effort using helicopters and professional crews on over 70 miles of Montague Island’s shoreline in the northern Gulf of Alaska. The project will also collect data during annual cleanups and retrieve chemically treated wood stockpiled at Gore Point on the Kenai Peninsula. Learn more about this project.

Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (Washington, DC and Maryland, $963,132) will conduct removals of abandoned and derelict vessels and other large debris along the tidal Anacostia River in Washington, DC and Maryland. Outreach programs will engage recreational users, local marinas, and upstream communities to prevent the reaccumulation of debris. Learn more about this project.

Ocean Conservancy (National, $5,218,000) will administer a national competitive grant program for the removal of large marine debris, including derelict fishing gear. The project will also provide funding to Tribal organizations to remove debris in southwest Alaska, remove marine debris in Florida’s Lower Keys, work with California fishers on solutions to ghost gear challenges, create tools to better understand the issue of derelict fishing gear, and identify solutions to prevent future gear loss. Learn more about this project.

The Ocean Foundation  (Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands, $847,881) will collaborate with local fishers to remove derelict fishing gear from the waters of Puerto Rico and St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The project will engage the community to develop education and prevention initiatives, including a trap trade-in program that aims to incentivize the use of legal traps and reduce the reaccumulation of derelict fishing gear. Learn more about this project.

Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (Rhode Island, $1,500,512) will remove a derelict, sunken crane-topped barge from the working waterfront in Providence, Rhode Island. This project will partner with The Steel Yard to engage community groups and local high school students to transform materials recovered from the barge into community-informed art and amenities for a public waterfront access point. Learn more about this project.

Washington State Department of Natural Resources (Washington, $1,029,285) in collaboration with the Squaxin Island Tribe, will remove abandoned and derelict vessels from the South Puget Sound on tidelands owned by the Squaxin Island Tribe to address pollution in a critically important cultural, recreation, and subsistence location. The project will also hold six vessel turn-in events throughout Western Washington to intercept vessels before they become derelict or abandoned. Learn more about this project.

Interception Technologies:

Florida State University (Florida, $677,554) will prevent the introduction of marine debris into the St. Andrew Bay watershed by deploying catch basin interception devices in storm drains. An outreach campaign will be paired with interception efforts to reduce the amount of marine debris entering waterways and the challenges to local municipalities, particularly after flood events. Learn more about this project.

Galveston Bay Foundation. (Texas, $505,592) will utilize boom-style interception devices in several Houston waterways to reduce urban pollution into Galveston Bay, the largest estuary in Texas. Citizen science and cleanup programs will build on the understanding of local debris issues, encourage behavior change, and inform prevention and education programs throughout the watershed. Learn more about this project.

Rochester Institute of Technology (New York, $912,829) will stem the flow of marine debris into Lake Ontario by installing storm drain catchment devices throughout the city of Rochester, New York. The project will develop and share best practices through a collaborative workshop and the development of a data-driven model to inform optimal device placement at the neighborhood scale in other cities. Learn more about this project.

Savannah Riverkeeper Inc (Georgia, $560,965) will utilize litter intercepting booms to reduce marine debris within the Ogeechee and Savannah River watersheds. This project will engage businesses, civic organizations, local schools, and subsistence fishermen in outreach to prevent debris reaccumulation. Learn more about this project.
