Electric boat, envgo launches flagship nv1 electric hydrofoiling boat with 80 miles of range and dc charging.

Avatar for Scooter Doll

A new company called ENVGO is putting its unique spin on the maritime industry, beginning with a new all-electric hydrofoiling boat called the NV1. The vessel features a massive battery pack with DC charging capabilities, and its hydrofoil design enables impressive range on the water.

ENVGO is a new electric boat manufacturer led by a team of executives with backgrounds in robotics and tech. To begin, ENVGO secured investments from a group of investors who recognized the potential of a fully electric maritime industry and not only provided the young company with financial backing but offered “valuable industry connections and business acumen.”

ENVGO also partnered with superyacht designer David Weiss of Designova Creative to aid in its initial design and engineering process. According to its website, the company is “on a mission to empower boating enthusiasts and the watersports industry with high-performance, zero-emissions boats, offering an effortless, exhilarating, and sustainable experience on the water.”

That journey begins with ENVGO’s flagship vessel, the NV1, an electric hydrofoil boat. Check it out.

 • Shipping accounts for around 3% of global emissions, but the industry is exploring decarbonization technologies, including biofuels, renewable energy and hybrid systems.
 • An electric ferry is being trialled in Stockholm, Sweden, which uses 80% less energy than a traditional boat.
 • The World Economic Forum's First Movers Coalition is an initiative to help decarbonize “hard-to-abate” industrial sectors, including shipping.

A ferry described as the world’s first high-speed electric passenger vessel is being trialled in Sweden.

As shipping attempts to decarbonize, could this be an indicator of the industry’s future?

The birth of the electric ferry

In October, a new electric ferry called the Candela P-12 will start running a trial service from the Swedish capital, Stockholm, to the island suburb of Ekerö.

Swedish electric boat maker Candela, which has developed the ferry, says it uses 80% less energy than conventional ships and " cuts lifetime emissions by 97.5% compared to diesel vessels ", according to Forbes.

With a top speed of 30 knots, the P-12 is "the world’s first high-speed and long-range electric shuttle ship”, Candela says, and is apparently faster for commuters than subway trains, buses and cars driving in rush hour.

The ferry flies above the water , reports France24 , using three carbon fibre wings that extend out of the hull. This means there's less wake, allowing the vessel to go faster than a conventional ferry would be allowed to.

Candela plans to expand internationally if the trial in Sweden is a success. The sector has "a lot of potential, because most of the big cities around the world are built around water", Andrea Meschini, head of R&D testing for the Candela P-12 ferry, told AFP.

Indeed, the electric vessels market is expected to be worth $14.2 billion in 2030 , according to Markets and Markets.

The P-12 Shuttle is one small but essential step towards decarbonization of the shipping industry.

Are there benefits for wider shipping?

Electric boats that run on batteries are an option for short sea journeys in smaller vessels like passenger ferries. But longer routes with bigger boats – like those typically needed for cargo shipping – are not yet possible.

Electrification is "really not an option for deep-sea vessels, due to the size of batteries that would be required", says Johannah Christensen of the Global Maritime Forum .

But thankfully, it is not the only green option being explored.

Emissions from mobility will increase through 2050, jeopardising our chances to combat climate change. By electrifying urban fleets, we can mitigate more than 70% of mobility CO2 urban emissions, remove 50% of city air pollution, and electrify rides to everyone - making the electrification transition more effective and equitable.

wia electric yacht

Understanding that coordination is needed to create tangible progress, this February the World Economic Forum launched a collaborative umbrella network that will help sync and synergize related global initiatives: the Zero Emissions Urban Fleets (ZEUF) network.

ZEUF is a network of stakeholders for accelerating urban fleets electrification, targeting 100% by 2030. Initiated by the World Economic Forum’s Global New Mobility Coalition in partnership with Uber, T&E, EuroCities, Free Now, LeasePlan, Door2Door, Lime, Blot, Voi, AEDIVE, Polis, The Climate Group, Race to Zero, and others, ZEUF is an open network that convenes periodically to facilitate informal know-how exchange and efforts coordination.

Why does shipping need to cut emissions?

International shipping is one of the toughest – and biggest – sectors to decarbonize. Around 11 billion tonnes of goods are transported by ship each year, between at least 150 countries.

Shipping transports approximately 80% of world trade and accounts for around 3% of global emissions. The world can’t achieve carbon neutrality and tackle the climate crisis without removing these emissions, experts say.

Air pollution from shipping is thought to cause around 60,000 premature deaths a year , especially around coastal and port areas.

How is shipping decarbonization progressing?

In 2023, the International Maritime Organization pledged to reach net-zero emissions from shipping by, or around, 2050 and committed to ensuring zero and near-zero fuels are in use by 2030.

It's a goal backed by more than 200 maritime industry leaders through the Call to Action for Shipping Decarbonization , a partnership managed by between the Global Maritime Forum (GMF), and initially founded together with the World Economic Forum and Friends of Ocean Action .

The Forum is also a partner in the First Movers Coalition – an initiative to help decarbonize “hard-to-abate” industrial sectors, including shipping, aviation and trucking.

Chart showing carbon dioxide emissions by main vessel types, tons, January 2012-March 2023.

What decarbonization solutions are there for shipping?

The GMF's latest Mapping of Zero-Emission Pilots and Demonstration Projects features 340 registered projects, with ammonia and hydrogen technologies dominating.

The shipping industry is trialling alternative fuels, like biogas – a renewable fuel typically derived from organic waste – as well as ammonia, methanol and hydrogen.

For example, Danish ship owner and operator Maersk is launching eight large ocean-going container vessels that can be run on carbon-neutral methanol .

Wind, sun and other forms of renewable energy can be harnessed on ships to help propel them. Swedish shipbuilder Wallenius Marine and its partners are developing the “ Oceanbird ,” a ship powered by six wing sails.

Meanwhile, US company Cargill has successfully tested "Pyxis Ocean", the world's first wind-powered ship . Retrofitted with two large wind sails, the vessel has achieved fuel savings – and therefore emissions savings – of 11 tonnes per day, says Cargill.

In Norway, cruise company Hurtigruten is tackling the significant emissions of the cruise ship industry with its plans for a solar-powered, zero-emissions cruise ship .

Hybrid systems that combine batteries and other fuels are also being developed that will help in decarbonization of the shipping industry.

In France, Brittany Ferries is launching its first hybrid ferry. The Saint-Malo has a 1,400-passenger capacity and is the first of two new hybrid ferries that will run between England and France from 2025.

The ferries can run on liquefied natural gas (LNG), battery power or a combination of the two. LNG is a fossil fuel, but is considered cleaner and safer than oil-based fuels.

Stena RoRo, the Swedish company building the ferries, says hybrid vessels are a stepping stone to future technology developments , including “green fuels, fuel cells, bigger batteries, and solar- or wind-supported propulsion”.

These river boats could be running on Moscow’s waterways by 2022 (PICS)

wia electric yacht

The 2050.LAB National Industrial Design Center in Moscow has developed an electric river tram transport scheme for the Moskva River. Photographs of the concept have been published on the center’s website.

The bureau presented three types of river boats, all with panoramic views giving passengers a detailed view of the shoreline. All boats are equipped with ramps, wheelchairs and baby buggies, as well as compartments for bicycles and other large luggage.

wia electric yacht

Each boat will automatically count the number of passengers to keep track of available places. The seats will be ergonomic, assures 2050.LAB Chief Designer Alexei Sharshakov.

“The pitch between them [the seats] has been calculated so that a person of any build will be comfortable,” Sharshakov told the Moskva news agency.

All three boats differ slightly in terms of design, he explained.

wia electric yacht

“The first has a rather calm exterior design: it’s a modern ship that makes the passenger feel cozy and comfortable. The second is striking for the negative slope of the glass and separate captain’s cabin, which seems to hover over the water in front of the passenger compartment. This increases visibility and gives the vessel a futuristic look. Such trams will stand out at night, due to their characteristic front lights,” Sharshakov said.

wia electric yacht

In the third boat, the captain’s cabin will be located on the second floor, making the passenger view even wider, explained the designer.

wia electric yacht

For an extra charge, passengers can enjoy breakfast on board. As per the concept, the boats will stop at river stations equipped with sheltered seats, as well as parking and car sharing facilities. In addition, shuttle buses will run to and from the nearest subway station. This requires synchronized boat and bus timetables, which passengers will be able to monitor in a special mobile app, as well as buy tickets.

wia electric yacht

Regular electric river boat services are due to be launched in Moscow in 2022-23, Moscow Deputy Mayor for Transport Maxim Liksutov said in a radio interview.

wia electric yacht

“Currently, only tourist and leisure boats sail in the capital. <...> We plan to make regular commuter services just as successful. <...> The vessels will be in the best traditions of the city: environmentally friendly, no harmful emissions into the air or water, fully electric-powered. No other country has anything like it yet,” Liksutov explained.

VESSEL REVIEW | Sinichka – Electric commuter boats designed for Russia’s Moskva River

Baird Maritime

A series of three new electric monohull commuter ferries have already begun operational sailings on the Moskva River in the Russian capital Moscow.

Built by Russian shipyard Emperium, sister vessels Sinichka , Filka , and Presnya – all named after rivers in Moscow – are being operated by the Moscow Department of Transport and Road Infrastructure Development (Moscow Deptrans). They are the first units of a planned fleet of 20 vessels that will serve the capital city and other nearby communities. The new ferry system will be the water transport system to be operated on the Moskva River in 16 years.

Each vessel has a welded aluminium hull, an LOA of 21 metres, a beam of 6.2 metres, a draught of only 1.4 metres, a displacement of 40 tonnes, and capacity for 80 passengers plus two crewmembers. Seating is available for 42 passengers on each ferry, and the main cabins are also fitted with USB charging ports, wifi connectivity, tables, toilets, and space for bicycles and scooters. The cabin layout can be rearranged to allow the operator to adjust the distances between the seats and to install armrests of varying widths.

Photo: Moscow City Government

An open upper deck is also accessible to passengers and is the only area on each ferry where smoking is allowed.

The ferries are all of modular construction with each ferry's wheelhouse, main cabin, and other structural elements being built as complete, separate components. This enables the ferries to be easily dismantled for transport to anywhere in Russia by rail and then quickly re-assembled within seven days.

The ferries are also ice-capable. Recently completed operational trials on the Moskva showed that the vessels can also easily navigate under mild winter conditions with broken surface ice, though year-round operations are planned for the entire fleet.

The ferries are each fitted with 500kWh lithium iron phosphate battery packs that supply power to two 134kW motors. This configuration can deliver a maximum speed of 11.8 knots, a cruising speed of just under 10 knots, and a range of 150 kilometres.

Emperium said the transfer of rotation of electric motors to the propeller is carried out by direct drive. As a propulsion installation, a pulling rotary propeller-steering column with double screws is used. The installation of double pulling screws, with similar power, allows an operator to increase the efficiency of the propulsion system to deliver a slightly higher speed or to reduce energy consumption. This arrangement also provides the ferries with enhanced manoeuvrability necessary for navigating in close quarters.

The batteries themselves have projected service lives of 10 to 12 years and are fitted with safety features such as built-in fire extinguishers and gas vents. Quick-disconnect features allow the batteries to be easily removed for replacement or maintenance.

Some of our readers have expressed disquiet at our publication of reviews and articles describing new vessels from Russia. We at Baird Maritime can understand and sympathise with those views. However, despite the behaviour of the country's leaders, we believe that the maritime world needs to learn of the latest developments in vessel design and construction there.
