Lady Michelle Yacht: Behind The Scenes

The Lady Michelle yacht became famous on the show Below Deck: Mediterranean season 6 where it was featured prominently. It’s worth noting that the Lady Michelle has since been renamed and is actually called the Next Chapter now. However, most people still know her as the Lady Michelle because of her time on the TV show. 

The yacht features naval architecture and was built by Italian yacht maker Benetti with design work done by Stefano Natucci and delivered back in 2003. She features a steel hull over an aluminum superstructure. It was refitted in 2022 and that was when the name was changed as well. 

Who Owns The Lady Michelle Yacht?

 In 2003 the Lady Michelle was purchased by entrepreneur Mike Fernandez.  He maintained ownership of the yacht even during its time on the show Below Deck. However, in 2022 the yacht was sold to a company called 1 Ocean Yachts. They are a yacht brokerage firm that also does yacht charter management and the Lady Michelle was renamed to the Next Chapter and added to their charter fleet.

How Big is the Lady Michelle/Next Chapter Yacht?

The Lady Michelle is by no means the biggest yacht in the world but it’s still a good sized vessel at 180.5 feet in length. According to the yacht specifications she features a 34 foot beam and her gross tonnage is 909 GT.

How Much Did the Lady Michelle Yacht Cost?

It’s believed that when the Lady Michelle sold in 2022 and was renamed the Next Chapter she sold for $18,950,000. That was the last published asking price for the yacht . Some sources claim that her initial price in 2003 was about $25 million. The annual cost to keep the yacht running is around $2 million. 

Can You Charter the Lady Michelle Yacht?

The Next Chapter/Lady Michelle is available for charter. The current price for a Lady Michelle yacht charter is about $325,000 per week. This number can change based on time of year and demand, however. Because the yacht is one of the more well known in the world thanks to its appearance on the show, it does tend to be popular.

How Fast is the Lady Michelle Yacht and What Engines Does She Have?

The Next Chapter uses a set of Caterpillar 3512 Diesel engines. Her cruising speed is about 14 knots with a top speed of 16 knots. She has a range of about 3,000 nautical miles at cruising speed.

What’s the Interior of the Motor Yacht Lady Michelle Like?

While the yacht was featured on Below Deck as we said and there was plenty of time for people to get a look at the interior and exterior, not all of that is applicable anymore. The refit of 2022 and subsequent sale to make it a charter yacht included a lot of changes to the overall look of the yacht. So if you think you know the Lady Michelle you may not, and the fact it’s called the Next Chapter now is symbolic of that. But, fortunately, the fact it is a charter now means the company wants you to know all of the features and amenities it has to offer, so we have a pretty good idea of the interior and how everything looks. 

As we said before, the interior and exterior were managed by Italian designer Stefano Natucci. As a charter vessel she has six cabins that can offer room for up to 12 guests. This includes 1 Master suite, 1 VIP cabin, 2 Double cabins, and 2 Twin cabins. There are also 14 crew on board to help make everyone’s time more enjoyable. 

The owner’s suite is also a split level to offer more space and views of the ocean. It features his and hers ensuite washroom facilities and offers a panoramic view of the ocean from the observation lounge. There’s also a private study 

When it comes to sleeping, guests enjoy a range of accommodations from the most luxurious with a king sized bed in the Master suite, to 3 queen sized in the VIP and doubles and then 4 singles and 1 pullman for those who are more inclined to rough it a little on a luxury yacht.

The interior was given traditional styling. This includes a lot of glossy wood finishes for a clean, shiny appearance. The color scheme is old school nautical blue and white for all the soft finishes like upholstery and pillows and so on. This, of course, matches the exterior paint on the hull.

Being a charter, the company in charge has packed the Next Chapter to the brim with all kinds of great features. Let’s take a look at some of the standouts.

Features and Amenities

Like any good luxury yacht, the Next Chapter has a wide range of activities, comforts and indulgences available for those who charter her. She also features a range of water toys that is a little more extensive than you may find on similar yachts. These include:

• A full gym with the latest equipment that is enclosed on the sundeck
• Deck Jacuzzi
• An open air cinema on deck for movie nights
• A saloon for socializing and enjoying drinks
• An elevator to move between the yacht’s four decks
• Two SeaDoo Spark Trixx WaveRunners
• The deck has an al fresco dining area
• Two seabobs
• Two Kayaks, 
• Fishing equipment
• Snorkeling gear
• Waterslides
• Two stand-up paddle boards
• Three tenders including a 45 foot Yamaha Seahunter Tournament Tender
• There’s an exterior bar on deck as well as a BBQ for drinks and entertaining under the sun or stars
• A swim platform

What Happened with the Lady Michelle Yacht Drug Bust? 

Being on the show Below Deck was not the Lady Michelle’s only brush with fame. Back in 2017 a boat of the same name also made international headlines after it was involved in a sizable drug deal. The boat, flagged as a fishing vessel , was discovered off the coast of South America with a remarkable 4.2 tonnes of cocaine on board. The street value at the time was pegged at about $125 million. 

While this boat was seized by both the US and the National Crime Agency, it was an unfortunate mix up with names that got the Lady Michelle yacht involved. This may also be part of the reason the newest owners changed the name, so as to distance themselves from what was, at the time, the largest drug seizure since 1999. You can imagine people who own the boat not wanting anyone to Google a potential charter and discover it was used as a boat to smuggle drugs, even though it was just a case of mistaken identity because they had the same name.

The Lady Michelle that had possession of the drugs was a 70 foot fishing vessel based out of St. Vincent and Grenadines. 

The Bottom Line

The Lady Michelle was built in the year 2003 for entrepreneur and philanthropist Mike Fernandez. It was featured on the sixth season of the show Below Deck: Mediterranean which gave the vessel some international attention. However, after it was sold in 2022 for about $18, 950,000 the vessel was retrofitted and also renamed the Next Chapter.

The Next Chapter is just about 180 feet in length and has a top speed of 16 knots. It’s available for charter at a cost of around $325,000 per week and has accommodations for a total of 12 guests. It features a number of luxury amenities and a lot of toys for those on board.

Below Deck motor yacht Lady Michelle sold

The 55 metre Benetti motor yacht Lady Michelle has been sold by Rob Newton at IYC and Jose Arana Jr at 1 Ocean Yachts, with Caleb Semtner of Semtner Brother Maritime Group, Inc assisting in the sale. 

The star of Below Deck Mediterranean season six, Lady Michelle was built in steel and aluminium by Italian yard Benetti and delivered in 2003. Lloyds classed and MCA compliant, she offers a sleek profile, extensive deck areas and well-conceived, spacious interiors.

Accommodation is provided for up to 14 guests in six cabins. The vast split-level owner’s suite has his and hers white marble bathrooms, a separate study and a private raised observation lounge with spectacular views forward. Clever design provides for a VIP cabin on the upper deck, affording wonderful views rarely enjoyed in guest accommodation. Further accommodation is provided in two double and two twin cabins, each with a Pullman berth, on the lower deck and all cabins on this yacht for sale have en suite facilities.

Lady Michelle has a spacious, generous layout with wide appeal, featuring warm cherry and burr walnut woods throughout. She has three spacious aft decks which offer a host of opportunities for al fresco living with open seating, lounging and dining areas located across the decks.

She completed a $2 million refit in Florida in March 2015 which has brought her up to a very high standard throughout. Recent interior décor upgrades include re-upholstered soft furnishings, new loose furniture, dining table and carpets. A complete review of all technical systems has also taken place along with cosmetic detailing in all technical areas, while in 2017 she received a full refit and now sports a fresh blue hull.

Twin 1,850hp Caterpillar engines give a cruising speed of 14 knots with a range of 7,000 nautical miles at 12 knots and she is fitted with zero speed stabilisers.

Lady Michelle was asking $18,500,000.

Set to premiere on 28 June, the successful Bravo franchise is back and bigger than ever promising compelling viewing as we follow the latest antics of charter guests and crew onboard the 180-foot Benetti  motor yacht LADY MICHELLE ; from a major storm, heated hot tub blow-up and a fire in the galley to a wedding, several drunken hookups and some serious twerking; sit back and enjoy the fireworks.  

Below Deck Mediterranean Season 6 marks the return of Captain Sandy and newly single Bosun Malia to the stunning location of Croatia, along with a brand new crew, including chief stewardess Katie Flood and Chef Mathew Shea.  

Bravo recently granted viewers with their first teaser trailer of the new series, which showcases high drama and wild crew shenanigans, including a novel use for the crew mess’s Lazy Susan, as well as plenty of tears and tantrums. 

Bravo has also promised “a shocking franchise first” before the opening charter, plus a return of guest Roy Orbison Jr, all taking place onboard the elegant charter yacht LADY MICHELLE. This Benetti motor yacht can accommodate 12 guests in her 6 luxuriously appointed suites, and is capable of carrying up to 12 crew members, making her the ideal size vessel for all the usual Below Deck antics on a yacht charter !

In an exclusive chat with E! News, Below Deck Mediterranean 's Captain Sandy Yawn dished all about her season six yacht, named Lady Michelle. Fans of the Below Deck franchise got a taste of the luxury vessel during season two of Below Deck Sailing Yacht . Yet, in the new season of Below Deck Med , viewers will get a front row seat to what the yacht has to offer.

And, from what Captain Sandy told us, Lady Michelle is one impressive yacht. "My favorite boat ever," she shared. "It was like so solid, I didn't even know we were at sea."

While the layout of Lady Michelle is certainly breathtaking, boasting six guest cabins and over 180 feet in length, the captain revealed that she loved the way it handles. "For me, how it responds in the sea," she explained. "You know, the layout was great, it's for charter...The volume for the size was incredible."

This is certainly high praise coming from Captain Sandy, who has previously captained mega-yachts Sirocco, Talisman Maiton and The Wellington. However, after learning of Lady Michelle's $310,000 winter rate/per week, we can't say we're shocked that the yacht is so spectacular.

Although Lady Michelle typically sails the Caribbean and Bahamas, Captain Sandy led her through the waters of Croatia this season. On returning to the European country's coast, she relayed, "It was absolutely beautiful. The people were great. You know, remember, it was very quiet 'cause of what was going on around the world."

Per the captain, she was "just grateful" that they "got to go there."

Speaking of the coronavirus pandemic, Captain Sandy assured us that season six will be just as entertaining and fabulous as its predecessors. "We made it incredible, right?" she said. "So, that's the beauty of being on a boat is you can quarantine off-shore and have this epic time and see these beautiful places while the rest of the world is shut down."

The captain highlighted how the charter business also helped the economy. She concluded, "At the same time, you're employing people, you're provisioning, you're buying goods. You know, so you're helping the community at the same time."

Below Deck Mediterranean  premieres tonight, June 28 at 9 p.m. on Bravo . All new episodes will be available on Peacock one week early, starting June 21.

The New Below Deck Mediterranean Yacht Is One Of The Most Expensive Yet

It sleeps 13 guests in six cabins and contains a beach club, sun deck, gym, and jacuzzi.

Below Deck Mediterranean is heading back to familiar waters. After sailing off the coast of Croatia in Season 2, the show is returning to the country for Season 6. Croatia was also recently featured in the second season of Below Deck Sailing Yacht , which is why viewers might recognize the yacht now being used in Mediterranean Season 6, the Lady Michelle.

At the end of Below Deck Sailing Yacht’ s most recent season, the crew had to make a last-minute change to their charter when their original guests tested positive for COVID-19. Since the Lady Michelle was already in the area, its crew became the Sailing Yacht ’s new charter guests. There was a lot of panic from the Sailing Yacht crew about what it was going to be like to work for fellow yachties, though the Lady Michelle crew at the time isn’t the same one on Below Deck Med Season 6.

Nevertheless, the new crew will be taking its guests out on one of the show’s most expensive yachts ever. According to the Burgess Yachts chartering site, chartering the Lady Michelle costs $275,000 per week during the summer and up to $310,000 per week during the peak winter season.

By comparison, the ships used in the first two Mediterranean seasons (including the Sirocco that sailed Croatia last time) cost around $167,000 and $213,000 per week, respectively, while last season’s impressive Wellington ship reportedly cost around $243,000 per week .

There’s a reason the Lady Michelle is so pricey, though. According to The International Yacht Company, the massive ship can sleep 13 guests in six cabins and contains a beach club, sun deck, gym, and jacuzzi. It also comes with variety of water toys like wave runners, waterskis, and a waterslide, per Burgess. If someone wanted to buy the whole ship and sail it all year round, IYC has it listed for $19.5 million. And you might need to buy the ship to get it back to Croatia, because that’s not its usual charter route.

On Below Deck , the ship sailed up to scenic Šibenik in Croatia , but the Lady Michelle typically isn’t a Mediterranean vessel. According to Burgess Yachts, it sails the Caribbean and Bahamas in the summer and just the Bahamas in the winter. So don’t get too attached to the Croatian setting if you’re planning to charter Lady Michelle with all of your spare hundreds of thousands of dollars.

A General Description of Motor Yacht LADY MICHELLE

From the Trinity Yachts ship building company in the United States the LADY MICHELLE is 49 metre 162 (ft) in length. Launched to celebration in 2007 the recent interior design exhibits the progressive thinking which are originating from Dee Robinson and the owner who commissioned the yacht. Superyacht LADY MICHELLE can accommodate up to 10 passengers with 9 crew members. The yacht is a recent tri deck yacht. She will reach a top speed of 19 knots.

Build & Designing of Luxury Yacht LADY MICHELLE

Trinity Yachts was the naval architecture company involved in the formal superyacht design work for LADY MICHELLE. Also the company Trinity Yachts successfully worked on this undertaking. Interior designer Dee Robinson was charged with the creative internal styling. the United States is the country that Trinity Yachts built their new build motor yacht in. After formal launch in 2007 in Gulfport Ms she was released to the happy owner after sea trials. The core hull was constructed with aluminium. The motor yacht main superstructure is fabricated extensively from aluminium. With a width of 8.5 m / 28 ft LADY MICHELLE has fairly large size. She has a fairly shallow draught of 2.43m (8ft). She had refit improvement and alteration work completed in 2007.

Main Engines And The Speed/Range That M/Y LADY MICHELLE :

The 3512B engine installed in the motor yacht is built by CATERPILLAR. For propulsion LADY MICHELLE has twin screw propellers. The main engine of the yacht gives 2250 horse power (or 1678 kilowatts). She is fitted with 2 engines. The total thrust for the yacht is accordingly 4500 HP / 3356 KW. As for stabalisers she utilises Quantum Zero Speed.

Former First Lady Michelle Obama ruffled a few feathers after she discussed her and Barack Obama 's wealth at the Democratic National Convention in August 2024.

After Michelle shared how her parents "didn't aspire to be wealthy," some social media users called her a hypocrite due to her and Barack's lavish homes.

How many homes do the Obamas own?

The Obamas own three homes: one in Kalorama, Wash., one in the historic Oak Bluffs in Martha's Vineyard, Mass., and one in Chicago's Kenwood suburbs. According to Celebrity Net Worth , they bought the Kalorama home for $8.1 million in 2019, followed by their $11.75 million Martha's Vineyard home in 2019. Their Kenwood, Ill. home , which the Obamas purchased before Barack's presidency, is worth $1.6 million.

Podcaster Joe Rogan accused TV personality Oprah Winfrey and former first lady Michelle Obama of brazen hypocrisy in their DNC speeches Thursday.

Oprah slammed former President Trump at the convention while saying the work of maintaining a democracy “requires standing up to life’s bullies” and describing how she has seen and sometimes been on the receiving end of “racism and sexism and income inequality and division.” 

Shortly after, the Trump campaign posted a thank-you letter Winfrey wrote in 2000 suggesting that he would be a good president. “Too bad we’re not running for office,” Winfrey wrote. “What a team!”

Likewise, the former first lady spoke about how her mother showed her “the meaning of hard work and humility and decency,” and added, “She and my father didn’t aspire to be wealthy. In fact, they were suspicious of folks who took more than they needed. They understood that it wasn’t enough for their kids to thrive if everyone else around us was drowning.”

But on Thursday, amid a conversation recalling how prominent public figures turned against Trump in recent years, Rogan mocked how both of these women have become fabulously wealthy in their own right. 

“How about Oprah?” Rogan said. “Oprah was talking about her and Trump running together, and now she’s speaking to the DNC that he’s a threat to democracy and she’s up there talking about income inequality, like, ‘Hey lady… you’re rich as f—.’ I’m like, ‘How is that equal?’”

The podcaster then added, “And also when Michelle Obama was saying, you know, I think she was saying her mother or grandmother was always suspicious of people who took more than they needed, like, you are worth so much money. That’s so crazy. You did it on a civil servant’s salary which is insane.”

Rogan was not the only public figure to call out Oprah’s hypocrisy. The major media mogul’s denunciation of income inequality rang hollow to people who pointed out her current enormous net worth, which Forbes estimated is $3 billion. 

Conservative radio host Dana Loesch wrote, “Kinda weird for Oprah, with her Hawaiian estate and multiple homes, expensive wardrobes, frequent luxury vacations, etc., to talk about income inequality.”

Meanwhile, Trump War Room, the official account of former President Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign, shared a clip of Michelle Obama’s speech and commented, “Michelle Obama says her parents ‘were suspicious of folks who took more than they needed.’ She has a net worth of $70 million and lives in a mansion in Martha’s Vineyard.”

No, Michelle Obama Isn't Trans — But Here's Why Her Critics Repeat the False Claim

After former first lady Michelle Obama's speech at the 2024 Democratic National Convention, social media posts across platforms like X , Facebook and TikTok surfaced criticizing her appearance and referring to her as "Big Mike" — a nod to a long-held conspiracy theory that she is secretly a transgender woman.

The claim isn't new. Roughly six years had passed since Barack Obama left the U.S. presidency when, in June 2023, podcaster Jason Whitlock released a 124-minute podcast episode largely dedicated to baseless conspiracy theories surrounding the former president and his family. In particular, Whitlock asked listeners to question whether Michelle Obama was in reality a trans woman attempting to keep her gender identity a secret from the public.

Additionally, Whitlock raised the possibility of Barack Obama being gay, a question that often coincides with conspiratorial thinking about Michelle Obama's gender identity. The podcast episode, part of Whitlock's show produced by the conservative media outlet TheBlaze, had 331,000 views on Whitlock's YouTube account, as of this writing.

"First of all, I don't know if Michelle is packing a sack or not," Royce White, a former NBA player and guest on the episode podcast, said to Whitlock. "I can't be sure. I've never seen her sack. I'd have to get up close to really know. Never been anywhere near the Obamas." (When we reached out to Whitlock to ask about the episode — namely, why these theories were covered on the show when there's no real evidence to support them — he said the explanation was found within the episode.)

Despite numerous fact-checking efforts to debunk these conspiracy theories involving the Obamas, Snopes has seen them repeated on popular platforms since the early days of their careers in politics. For example, questions over Michelle Obama's gender identity have surfaced due to digitally altered photos to exaggerate her physical features , as well as social media posts that speculate whether she is the real mother of her children , Malia and Sasha. As of 2023, people consistently searched Snopes' site for facts on the matter, using phrases like "michelle obama is really a man."

"These claims will likely not go away," Newly Paul, an associate professor of print/digital media at the University of North Texas, wrote via email. "They seem rooted in spite, sexism, and racism, which fact-checks cannot cure."

Gender and sexuality scholars say the conspiracy theory about Michelle Obama being a trans woman has thrived for more than a decade because it's rooted in racism, transphobia, and misogyny, as well as how some Americans believe a first lady should embody certain race, class, and gender norms. According to the Smithsonian, Americans expect the first lady to be a symbol of "home, family, and womanhood."

"By questioning her sexuality and her physical appearance, the memes attempt to paint her as completely opposite to the traditional notions of a first lady as feminine," Paul wrote.

In this story, we'll break down the phenomenon, as well as how the baseless rumor gained momentum over the years. We reached out to the office of Barack and Michelle Obama for interviews and will update this story if we get a response back. She's at least aware of the smear campaign, commenting publicly in her 2018 memoir "Becoming"(bolded emphasis ours):

I've smiled for photos with people who call my husband horrible names on national television, but still want a framed keepsake for their mantel. I've heard about the swampy parts of the internet that question everything about me, right down to whether I'm a woman or a man . A sitting U.S. congressman has made fun of my butt. I've been hurt. I've been furious. But mostly, I've tried to laugh this stuff off.

Catalysts That Made the Conspiracy Theory Mainstream

The claim that Michelle Obama is a trans woman has permeated corners of the internet and pop culture since at least 2008 — that's when we first received reader emails asking us to confirm or deny it.

The claim truly picked up steam in July 2014, when the late comedian Joan Rivers was recorded on the streets of New York City calling Barack Obama gay and using a slur against transgender people in reference to Michelle Obama. "We all know," Rivers said, supposedly in reference to Michelle Obama's alleged secret of being trans.

The video clip of Rivers quickly went viral, despite the fact that she provided no proof to substantiate the allegations. Shortly after Rivers made the remarks, a representative released the following statement to CNN on behalf of Rivers:

I think it's a compliment. She's [Michelle Obama] so attractive, tall, with a beautiful body, great face, does great makeup. Take a look and go back to La Cage Au Follies (sic). The most gorgeous women are transgender. Stop it already … and if you want to talk about 'politically correct,' I think this is a 'politically incorrect' attack on me because I'm old, Jewish, a woman and a 'hetty' – a heteosexual … and I plan to sue the reporter who, when he turned off his camera, tried to touch me inappropriately on the a** - luckily he hit my ankle. Read the book … if you think that's silly, wait to (sic) you see what I say about FDR and Eleanor!

Rivers died two months after the video surfaced online, in September 2014. As the video swept the web, Infowars founder Alex Jones chimed in to support Rivers' theories. He described Michelle Obama using a slur against trans people and said she had "shoulders that are wider than a man's, which physiologically doesn't happen." Those comments from Jones — a prolific conspiracy theorist whose false claims about the 2012 Sandy Hook shooting, in particular, resulted in him being ordered to pay $1.5 billion to victims' families — helped power the rumor about Michelle Obama for years.

In addition to celebrities and media provocateurs, some conservative politicians helped push the theory to mainstream audiences in the 2010s. For example, in 2016, McClatchy DC reported that a Republican state representative in Kentucky, Tim Couch , promoted the notion of Michelle Obama being trans with posts on his Facebook page, including one with a link that cited Rivers' viral comments. ( He did not return that news publication's requests for comment. The posts were later taken down, and the Facebook account's profile name was changed to that of Couch's wife.)

Social media posts trumpeting the conspiracy theory continued circulating in 2023, particularly in September 2023, after former Fox News host Tucker Carlson interviewed Larry Sinclair — a man who, for years, has claimed without verifiable evidence that he took drugs and had sex with Barack Obama when he was a young politician. (There's no evidence corroborating that that ever happened.) Also, Jones continues to promote the theory to fans; for example, in a September 2023 segment of "The Alex Jones Show," he called Michelle Obama "Big Mike" numerous times.

Specific Rumors That Fit Within the Phenomena

A variety of claims exist within the broader conspiracy theory of Michelle Obama being trans, such as:

• The Obamas are supposedly not the real parents of their two daughters (a claim heavily discussed during the above-mentioned episode of Whitlock's podcast);
• Rivers was purportedly killed for "revealing the truth" about Barack being gay and Michelle being trans;
• Michelle Obama 's birth name is "Michael Lavaughn Robinson";
• Photos supposedly exist depicting Michelle Obama "as a man" in her younger days married to Barack Obama.

Reputable fact-checking organizations like Snopes , PolitiFact , USA Today , Agence France-Presse (AFP) and Reuters have debunked all such prongs of the overarching conspiracy theory, concluding that the alleged "evidence" for each claim was illegitimate.

One of the most popular claims, at the time of this writing, was the false notion mentioned above targeting Malia and Sasha Obama, now 25 and 22, respectively. According to the claim, the two were conceived by surrogate parents, and Barack and Michelle Obama supposedly tried to conceal that fact since public knowledge of it would expose their alleged secrets around Barack's sexuality and Michelle's gender identity.

That particular claim has existed since at least 2013, PolitiFact reported . We found examples of it on multiple social media platforms , including a June 2023 Instagram post that featured footage of the podcast episode from Whitlock.

Denouncing Barack and Michelle Obama as " frauds " or as "two gay pedophiles , " believers in this theory often cast Dr. Anita Blanchard and Martin Nesbitt, real longtime friends of the Obamas, as the alleged surrogates. Working as the former first lady's doctor, Blanchard delivered both Sasha and Malia Obama — but Blanchard's involvement in their births ended there.

Promoters of the conspiracy theory say the lack of available public photos showing Michelle Obama pregnant is suspicious, and that they're not publicly available because they don't exist, and they don't exist due to the alleged surrogacy. Our research efforts so far, using open-source tools, have not uncovered any such pictures. But there are a range of perfectly logical reasons for that to be the case, including the possibility that the Obamas simply decided to keep such photos private.

Furthermore, Michelle and Barack Obama have discussed the births of their daughters publicly with no mention of surrogacy, though in her 2018 biography, Michelle revealed both Sasha and Malia Obama were conceived through in vitro fertilization.

Another popular claim that believers of the "Michelle Obama is trans" theory circulate is that Rivers' death in 2014 was supposedly connected to her viral comments about the Obamas. Such posts imply that someone, or some group, working on behalf of the Obamas orchestrated Rivers' death because she shared "the truth" about them.

"FLASHBACK: Joan Rivers leveled some serious accusations about Michelle Obama," one post on X (formerly known as Twitter) said in September 2023. "Joan Rivers DIED a few weeks later." Attached to the post was footage of Rivers making her comments about the Obamas. We found numerous similar posts on other social media platforms , including on TikTok.

In reality, Rivers died days after she stopped breathing during a routine endoscopy, according to The Hollywood Reporter . There's no evidence whatsoever that the Obamas had anything to do with her death, and its timing appeared coincidental.

Among posts focusing specifically on Michelle Obama's gender identity, some have claimed, without real evidence, that her birth name was "Michael Lavaughn Robinson." We found several posts across multiple platforms that referred to her as "Big Mike."

For "proof" to supposedly substantiate the claim, some posts pointed to a purported voting record or mother's will that supposedly identified her as male using the "Michael" name. AFP and The Associated Press , respectively, reported that neither piece of "evidence" was real. Other versions of the claim have also been debunked by PolitiFact, including the false assertion that Amazon's Alexa called Michelle Obama "Michael Lavaughn Robinson" when prompted.

Furthermore, some social media posts have alleged that Barack Obama once "slipped up" and called Michelle Obama "Michael" in a public speech. As USA Today reported, the in-question remark was taken out of context. Videos of the moment in the speech were authentic — in other words, they weren't the product of digital manipulation. But the former president was quoting a letter from a Pennsylvania woman writing about her husband, Michael, and not talking about his own marriage.

As far as photos that supposedly show Michelle Obama as a man in her younger years — such images have been digitally altered to make her forehead, eyes, and hair appear more traditionally masculine. Those photos have spread on multiple social media platforms.

Beliefs Underpinning the Conspiracy Theory

Michelle Obama is not the only target of this type of internet trope. Snopes often debunks baseless claims about high-profile women who supposedly transitioned without telling the public — claims that have targeted U.S. swimmer Katie Ledecky and actor Daniel Radcliffe's girlfriend, Erin Darke , for instance.

"Not looking 'feminine' enough has been a rod used to beat successful women throughout history and is still employed today (Michelle Obama, Lady Gaga, Simone Biles, Caster Semenya) which quickly bleeds into homophobic rhetoric, where cis women are attacked for looking 'manly' or 'like lesbians'," wrote freelance journalist Kate Demolder for the Irish public broadcaster RTE in April 2023 .

Speaking on Michelle Obama's case, specifically, Aria Halliday, an associate professor of gender and women's studies at the University of Kentucky, said the former first lady's visibility as a popular, high-profile Black woman allowed for people to subscribe to the idea that trans people are secretly hiding in plain sight everywhere.

A believer may say to someone else, Halliday said: "'You don't even really understand how to see and understand what trans people are doing. [...] 'They're pulling the wool over everyone's eyes. Let me show you how.' Michelle is the perfect example. 'And if we can identify her, we can identify all of them and get rid of them."

According to Halliday, misgendering Michelle Obama as an un-admitted trans woman and snidely referring to her as "Michael" gives some indication of how adherents to this conspiracy theory feel about Black, trans women in general. "They are able to tie all of their feelings about trans women; all of their feelings about Michelle Obama; all of their feelings about white people [...] being replaced in the world — they get to do all of that stuff in one place," she said. "And Michelle Obama, because of her position as first lady, kind of sits at the crux of all of those conversations at the same time."

While most people seemingly do not believe the conspiracy theory, "a really small majority" with political and financial influence is dedicated to making sure that the "Michelle and Barack experience" — that is, a Black presidency — never happens again, according to Halliday. "It [the false claim that Michelle Obama is trans] lives and breathes in those spaces and will continue to, I'm sure, because it fits a particular narrative about 'Make America Great Again' [...] 'All are created equal,' but this doesn't include Black people."

Halliday connected the claims surrounding Michelle Obama to ongoing "culture wars" in which the "truth" is defined differently by opposing parties, such as fights in U.S. education over what is written in history textbooks . "They are connected in this kind of larger scheme about who controls the narrative of what is an American, and [to] these people being very scared of being pushed out," she said.

Both Paul at the University of North Texas and Halliday agreed: The baseless claims about Michelle Obama won't disappear anytime soon.

"We're at a point where either you're willing to move on — you're the 80% who are like, 'Look, this is stupid, and I don't have time for this.' Or, you're the 20% who wants to live and breathe these kind of conspiracy theories and narratives," Halliday said.

Fact check: What the Obamas and other Democratic speakers got right, wrong on Day 2 of the DNC

CHICAGO —  Two decades after exploding onto the political scene at a different Democratic convention, former President Barack Obama, along with former first lady Michelle Obama, energized convention attendees here. The Obamas bestowed their support on nominee Kamala Harris, who aims to follow Obama as the nation’s second Black president.

Barack Obama began his address by praising outgoing President Joe Biden. “I am proud to call him my president, but I am even prouder to call him my friend,” Obama said of Biden, his former vice president.

Obama attacked Harris’ opponent, former President Donald Trump with zingers, once needling Trump for a “ weird obsession with crowd sizes ” (which also involved a suggestive hand gesture).

Barack Obama offered a few notes that rhymed with his career-making 2004 keynote address at the Democratic convention in Boston, in which he argued against the idea that there is a blue America and a red America.

Michelle Obama’s speech also offered some optimistic notes, including the notion that “hope is making a comeback” with Harris’ late entry into the presidential race as Biden’s would-be successor. But the former first lady’s remarks were sometimes even more acerbic than her husband’s.

She said, for example, that Trump had benefited from the “affirmative action of generational wealth” yet still managed to get “a second, third or fourth chance” while regularly “whining” or “cheating.” She also criticized Trump — an early spreader of the “birther” conspiracy theory that doubted that Obama was born in the U.S. — for having made Americans “fear us” as an educated, high-achieving couple who “happen to be Black.”

Here are some fact-checks of claims made during the convention’s second night.

Barack Obama: Under Joe Biden, the U.S. produced “15 million jobs, higher wages, lower health care costs.” 

He’s right about jobs: The U.S. has  added 15.8 million jobs  since January 2021, when Biden was sworn in, though some of those represented the workforce return of workers the pandemic had sidelined.

Wages are up under Biden without factoring in inflation. But for his full tenure, wages have  trailed inflation , which hit a four-decade high under Biden. Nevertheless, wages have outpaced inflation over the past two years, the past year and compared with before the pandemic.

Whether health care costs were lower overall is a trickier question, because there’s great variation from family to family and person to person. However, U.S. health care expenditures as a percentage of gross domestic product peaked during the pandemic in 2020 and have  since fallen  roughly to prepandemic levels. This represented the biggest sustained decline in decades.

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt.: “Unemployment was soaring” when Biden and Harris took office in January 2021.

Mostly False.

Sanders overstated the unemployment situation when Biden and Harris were inaugurated.

In April 2020, at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the unemployment rate surged to 14.8% as millions of Americans lost their jobs.

But by the time Biden took office in January 2021, the rate had fallen to 6.4%, and it continued to fall that year.

So it wasn’t “soaring” any longer, though the rate was still high by historical standards. It was lower than 6.4% for about six years prepandemic.

July’s unemployment rate is 4.3%.

Project 2025

Pennsylvania state Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta, D-Philadelphia: “And on Page 587, Project 2025 would cut overtime pay for hardworking Americans.”

Labor law experts have told PolitiFact  that the Project 2025 plan would not eliminate overtime pay, but some workers could lose overtime protections if the plan’s proposals are enacted. It’s hard to say how many; it would depend on what’s enacted.

The document proposes that the Labor Department maintain an overtime threshold “that does not punish businesses in lower-cost regions (e.g., the southeast United States).” This threshold is the amount of money executive, administrative or professional employees need to make for an employer to exempt them from overtime pay under the Fair Labor Standards Act.

In 2019, the Trump administration  finalized a rule  that expanded overtime pay eligibility to most salaried workers earning less than about $35,568. The Biden administration  raised that threshold  to $43,888 beginning July 1, and that will rise to $58,656 on Jan. 1, 2025.

Project 2025’s proposal would return to the Trump-era threshold in some parts of the country. It’s unclear how many workers that would affect, but experts said some would presumably lose the right to overtime wages.

Other proposals in the plan include allowing some workers to choose to accumulate paid time off instead of overtime pay, to work more hours in one week and fewer in the next rather than receive overtime,,and require employers to pay overtime for working on the Sabbath.

Former first lady Michelle Obama: One of Trump’s proposals is “shutting down the Department of Education.”

Trump has said he would  abolish the Education Department , a proposal  he shares with Project 2025 , an agenda independently produced by some Trump allies.

It’s also something conservative groups have pushed for decades. The idea is to save a few essential functions and hand them to other agencies.

Trump’s education agenda also includes universal school choice, not spending federal dollars on schools that have vaccine mandates, allowing prayer in school, making principals directly elected by voters, subsidizing homeschooling and abolishing tenure for K-12 teachers.

Health Care

Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.: “Democrats lowered prescription drug prices.”

Mostly True.

The Democrats did take historic steps to lower prices for Medicare recipients, but that’s a limited group of people and for many drugs that will take time.

In August 2022,  Biden signed the Inflation Reduction Act,  which allows the federal government to negotiate prices with drugmakers for Medicare. It passed without Republican support. The same law  capped  the monthly price of insulin at $35 for Medicare enrollees starting in 2023.

The Biden-Harris administration  announced  Aug. 15 that the federal government had reached agreements with all participating manufacturers on new negotiated drug prices for the first 10 drugs selected under the new law.

That will define the prices to be paid for prescriptions starting in 2026. For 2027 and 2028, 15 more drugs per year will be chosen for price negotiations. Starting in 2029, 20 more will be chosen a year.

New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham: Donald Trump and J.D. Vance want to “repeal the Affordable Care Act.”

Half True .

Trump’s new position doesn’t match his old one, but more details are needed.

In 2016, Trump campaigned on a promise to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act. As president, Trump supported a failed effort to do just that. In the years since, he has repeatedly stated his intent to dismantle the health care law, including in campaign stops and social media posts throughout 2023.

In March, however, Trump walked back this stance. He wrote on Truth Social that he “isn’t running to terminate” the ACA but to make it “better” and “less expensive.”

Trump hasn’t said how he would do this, and health care policy experts said it’s difficult to know where he stands without a detailed plan. Experts identified an array of possible changes that could be executed under another Trump administration but said a sweeping repeal likely isn’t in the cards given a lack of political support.

Childhood Poverty

Sanders: “We cut childhood poverty by over 40% through an expanded child tax credit.”

Biden’s American Rescue Plan increased the child tax credit from $2,000 to $3,600 for children younger than 6 and to $3,000 for children 6 to 17.

We  previously reported  that supplemental poverty numbers showed poverty among all U.S. children dropped from 9.7% in 2020 to 5.2% in 2021, the Census Bureau said — a decline of 46%. About 5.3 million people were lifted out of poverty, including 2.9 million children.

The provision lapsed after December 2021, facing opposition from Republicans and Sen. Joe Manchin, now an independent, who argued that expanding the credit would worsen inflation.

When the expanded tax credit expired, supplemental child poverty  spiked , rising from 12.1% in December 2021 to 17% in January 2022 — a 41% change.

Kamala Harris in a DNC video: Trump “wants to impose what is in effect a national sales tax on everyday products and basic necessities that we import from other countries. … (it) would cost a typical family $3,900 a year.”

Trump has said that  he would propose a 10% tariff on all nondomestic goods sold  in the U.S. Although tariffs are levied separately from taxes, economists say that much of their impact would be passed along to consumers, making them analogous to a tax.

The video’s figure about how much it will cost families is higher than current estimates.

The American Action Forum, a center-right think tank, has  projected  additional costs per household of $1,700 to $2,350 annually.

The Peterson Institute of International Economics, another Washington, D.C.-based think tank,  projected  that such tariffs would cost a middle-income household about $1,700 extra each year.
